YOUR WAY AROUND

By Emma Prior The north east Victorian region has some of the best walking and cycling tracks in Australia for those who love to spend their time in the great outdoors. Whether you like to take an easy stroll or you are more of a runner or if you like the cruisey road rides or mountain biking is more your style, there is something for everyone in this region.

Continued on page 10-11.

GOOD TIMES WINTER 2021 • 9

Cycle your way around our picturesque regions link between the culinary villages of Beechworth, Rutherglen, Bright & Wangaratta. More recently the shared trail network has been extended from Wangaratta to Milawa, Bright and Wandiligong.

Popular Rail Trail Rides Porepunkah to Bright - 6km Myrtleford to Bright - 30km Beechworth to Bright - 41km Wangaratta to Bright - 83km Bright to Wandiligong - 10km return Bright to Germantown - 5km Harrietville to Stony Creek - 5km

Bright and surrounds Bright and Surrounds offer some of the most challenging and stunning road riding as well as mountain biking in Australia. And if you’re a keen walk/runner you can try to conquer some of the beautiful trails. Riders more primarily than walkers, come to conquer some of the biggest, longest and steepest mountain climbs in the country. Cyclists have several mountain summits to aim for including Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham, which are generally tackled starting from Bright. For those who love a challenge take on the Mystic MTB Park which is renowned for its technically challenging trails through predominantly radiata pine plantation environment. There is also the Tombstone Loop which is 5.3km long or the hero loop which will take you 8.04km. Falls Creek is another challenge with Mount Beauty at the base as a popular departure point. For a longer challenge why not try the Big Hill

Mountain Bike Park which has over 40kms of topquality cross country and downhill trails suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. You can also take on the yellow loop, blue loop or red loop all around 10km long with a range of styles. The Omeo side of Falls Creek is ranked one of the hardest rides in the country. Omeo is also the starting point for the scenic ride up the back of Mount Hotham via Dinner Plain.

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is the perfect way to discover the diverse countryside with its natural bushland, hidden valleys and some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Australia. Not to mention the endless wine, beer, food and fresh produce you will find along the way. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, for cyclists and walkers, and for all budgets, the trail provides over 100 kilometres of sealed trails and the perfect

Albury Wodonga Albury Wodonga are also no stranger to beautiful cycle or walking trails with one of the most popular trails being the Wagirra Trail. This trail incorporates Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, which extends from the Union Bridge in South Albury through to the picturesque Horseshoe Lagoon in West Albury. This trail also links with Wodonga’s network of pathways. The more adventurous can head to Nail Can Hill, to find many trails ideal for mountain biking and hiking. State and National mountain bike championship events are often held there, and riders rate the challenging courses as among the best in Australia.

Venture off the beaten track and discover a world of towering red gums that protect the banks of the mighty Murray. Many tracks meander their way alongside the river. The Yarrawonga Regional Park has some great tracks which link up to Yarrawonga and the world heritage listed Barmah Forest also has some interesting trails. SILO ART AND FARM GATE TRAIL

Discover large scale art and great produce Take a road of discovery on the North East Victoria Silo Art Trail and Sun Country Farm Gate Trail, where you will experience art in a large scale and not in a gallery while also discovering some great produce along the way. The art works have been completed by renowned street artists with important themes depicting the local environment and history. Pictured is Goorambat Uniting Church’s artwork of ‘Sophia’. ‘Sophia’, who by nature is wise, nurturing, comforting, inspirational and ever present, is a stunning mural to depict the female aspect of the Holy Spirit.

The great Murray River golf courses

Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort The 523 metre Par 5 hole on the Murray Course requires a solid drive and, with forest on both sides of the fairway and a water hazard on the right, a careful second shot, before an elevated green where the ball will run back towards you if you’re not well on, and there’s a deepish bunker in front on the right hand side in front of the wide green.

Silverwoods, Yarrawonga Black Bull Golf Club The Black Bull Golf Course’s sixth hole, a Par 4, is 390 metres long and the third hole in the Bull Ring’s trio of tough holes. The tee shot is played to a narrow landing with bunkers left and right of the fairway. The second shot is challenging, over a ridge to an elevated green which has two deep bunkers on the left. Reach the green’s centre as there is a swale at the green’s front.

Corowa Golf Club The 17th hole Par 4, 376m hole dogleg left is the signature hole on the back nine with a tee shot starting through a tunnel of trees that guard the fairway. Drive to the centre or right-hand-side of the fairway or negotiate a 600-yearold Murray River Gum forming a narrow entrance to the green which has bunkers either side.

Tocumwal Golf Club The 18th hole, Par 5 is rated number one on the card and plays 378 metres off the blue tees for the men and it is rated number 7 for the ladies. It plays as a slight dogleg to the right from the tee, over the mound that runs across the fairway and then a mid iron to the green in front of the large club house.

CRUISE THE MIGHTY MURRAY

Howlong Golf Club The Par 5, 14th hole measuring 404 metres from the ladies tees is a genuine two-stage dogleg. Heavily wooded either side of the fairway, there are four greenside pot bunkers to negotiate. It is a lengthy journey with the emphasis on risk and reward once the green is in sight. Some tricky pin placements will also keep golfers testing their ability. Rated number one on the Ladies course index.

Come on-board Cobba and experience the natural beauty of the Murray River and surrounding bushlands. Situated at Thompsons Beach “Australia’s biggest inland beach”. Our world class wine regions at your doorstep

King Valley

Alpine Valleys

Located at the foothills of the Alpine National Park, the picturesque King Valley wine region is home of many exceptional Italian wine varietals, including Prosecco, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio, influenced by Italian immigrants living in the area.

With the breathtaking Victorian Alps and colourful food culture, the Alpine Valleys region is one of the most visited destinations in Victoria by outdoor adventurers and wine enthusiasts alike.

The vineyards, perched on the fertile slopes that rise above the King River, are home to great wines and their makers. First, second and third generation Italian migrant families continue a tradition, today treating the Australian palate with their Mediterranean-inspired wines. The famous ‘Prosecco Road’ is a sensational food and wine trail celebrating the best of the rustic Italian dining experience. Visitors can drive or cycle the trail and enjoy intimate tastings with the winemakers and savour the flavours of the fine combination of Australian and Italian cuisine. The area also includes the Milawa Gourmet Region, home of unique delicatessens, providores, restaurants, food stores and markets.

The region includes the four valleys surrounding the Ovens, Buffalo, Buckland and Kiewa rivers with the unique sub-alpine conditions producing premium cool climate wines. The region is renowned for its elegant, velvety red wines and crisp white wines. Nestled in the Alpine Valleys are many charming towns like Bright, Porepunkah and Myrtleford which are home to rail trails and boutique cellar doors

scattered through the hills of this relatively new wine making region. Beechworth is renowned for its chardonnay, shiraz and pinot noir. A selection of Cellar Doors can be found throughout the rolling hills. While some Cellar Doors are open to the public, many are by appointment only. After indulging in some fabulous wine tasting, take a wander through the beautiful elms and oaks and discover great food, heritage, and boutique shopping.

Rutherglen Situated on the banks of the Murray River, the Rutherglen region is internationally famous for its fortified wines. After emerging from the gold rush in the mid-nineteenth century, the region is now referred to as the ‘liquid’ gold capital. The beautiful old winemaking houses which sprang up in the gold rush days are still owned and managed by fourth, fifth and sixth generation descendants.

Rutherglen’s ‘big wine bottle’, is the perfect place to take a bottle and watch the sunset with loved ones. Visitors can also join the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail and discover the magnificence of the mighty Murray River with cellar doors and wonderful country hospitality along the way. Further up the road is Lake Moodemere which is surrounded by extensive wetlands and river red gums, with incredible birdlife and an ideal spot for fishing.

‘Shear’ DELIGHT

Visit the replica shearing shed from “Shearing the Rams” near the original site, situated on the nearby Redlands Hill Reserve.

Experience the area of one of Australia’s most iconic artworks with a unique Shearing of the Rams experience. A unique drive just North of the Murray is the Shearing of the Rams experience Wool production was a major ingredient in Australia’s early wealth, and the flat pastoral land in our region suited this booming industry. Pioneering Australian oil painter Tom Roberts specialised in painting landscapes (capturing Australian landscapes in a uniquely Australian way) and was also skilled at painting portraits and people in everyday situations. As is still the case, Tom Roberts was drawn to Brocklesby Station, about 20 minutes north-west of Corowa, where he spent time in 1888 making sketches in and around the shearing sheds. “Shearing the Rams” is one of the paintings that resulted from Roberts’ stay. Completed in 1890, the large canvas is his most well-known painting, and numbers amongst Australia’s most iconic artworks. It was quickly purchased and is on proud display at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne to date. 26 • GOOD TIMES WINTER 2021

Pioneering Australian oil painter Tom Roberts was drawn to Brocklesby Station in 1888 where he created the “Shearing the Rams” oil painting above.

Start your journey on the Shearing the Rams Trail at the Corowa Visitor Information Centre. Here, the knowledgeable staff will give you information and advice on the history and key points of interest surrounding Roberts’ visit.

The mural In 2020, to celebrate the 130th anniversary of “Shearing the Rams”, a large mural of the iconic painting reproduced by Tracy Hancock was unveiled at Corowa’s Federation Museum. The mural was funded by a bequest from the late Tim Fischer AC, local identity and former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, and the grand opening was attended by one of the descendants of Jim Coffey, the main shearer featured in the painting.

The shearing shed While the actual shearing shed from “Shearing the Rams” is long-gone due to a fire in 1960, there still stands a replica near the original site, situated on the nearby Redlands Hill Reserve. Despite the lack of first-hand evidence, the landscape of Redlands Hill Reserve is still a marvellous place to visit.

Local sculptor Andrew Whitehead created a lifesize replica of a shearer using blade shears inspired by the famous Tom Roberts painting. This reserve boasts four walking trails, with all the tracks rated easy and no bushwalking experience required. The shortest track is just 700 metres and the longest is 1.7 kilometres. Signs give visitors insights into the reserve’s environment, plants and animals. The reserve also hosts information on Tommy McRae and Tom Roberts; one of Roberts’ other famous paintings – “A Break Away!”, painted in 1891 – is also based on sketches he did in this landscape.

The sculpture

In 2020 a large mural of the iconic painting was reproduced at the federation Museum in Corowa.

In 2018, sculptor Andrew Whitehead created a lifesize replica of a shearer using blade shears to shear a curly horned ram, inspired by the famous Tom Roberts painting. Continue travelling north on the “Tom Roberts’ Road. Head north towards Williamson Road where you turn left to stay on Tom Roberts Road, (a true replica of the roadways from yesteryear) until you meet the Riverina Highway. Here you will find the Shearing the Rams Sculpture
