IT’S PRIME

Cod time By local fishing guru Tony Bennett Cod fishing is a fine art and in Autumn “the home of the Murray Cod” - Lake Mulwala provides a prime time to catch one. Options are plenty for those fishing in Lake Mulwala, upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers above Bundalong and downstream in the Murray below Yarrawonga Mulwala. At the moment there is plenty of weed to work through and Tony provides some advice into fishing these conditions with various style lures and bait.

It’s prime Cod time

By local fishing guru Tony Bennett

With conditions nearing perfect as the summer sun eases, the next few months, March, April and May is the prime time to be hitting the home of the Murray Cod, Lake Mulwala.

Retrieve your SB too fast and it will rise to the top of the water column quickly and out of the strike zone. Going the other way, too slow will see your SB have no action and floundering around on the bottom. Casting along the face of visible weed beds or tight into timber structure will see you in with a good chance. Winding a SB slightly quicker across the top of weed beds is another good option.

Hard Bodied Lures – The use of hard bodies is always popular but in and around weed they tend to foul up on a regular basis. With half a dozen hook points exposed, this is a common occurrence. Instantly your lure will lose all action and become nothing more than a painted stick trailing through the water with weed hanging off the back of it. Do not discount them if you have clear pockets or faces of weed to fish but there do tend to be better options when in and around weed.

Weedless Lures – Now these things make sense! With the boom in plastics fishing, along with it has come the progress in lure design to suit various fishing situations and this situation being weed.

Donny Blackie 112cm Surface Cod. Marty Smith 112cm Cod.

The word on everybody’s lips at the moment - “weed”. Vast amounts have flourished in recent times and with this has came a concentration of cod, some big ones at that. The most successful anglers have been fishing either the faces of weed beds, over the top of the weed or in small pockets around timber. The following will delve a bit deeper into fishing these conditions with various style lures/bait and look at what else is hot in fishing tackle at the moment.

Weedless lures tend to be made of a durable soft type rubber with hooks embedded in them in various ways. Upon being hit by a fish they tend to collapse/crush and allow for the hook point to be exposed and thus the fish being hooked. Cast tight into the weed allows anglers to search for that elusive Murray Cod whilst not being fouled up every cast; a very effective way to fish in and around the weed.

Swimbaits – Swimbaits have been the most popular trend in lure bars nothing over the last couple of years and with them have come many great captures.

Spinnerbaits - The majority of fishos that lure fish in Mulwala on a regular basis will have a plethora of spinnerbaits at their disposal. The two most popular types of spinnerbait are suited with either Colorado or Willow blades. The Colorado blades (spoon shaped) give you more vibration whilst the Willow blades (Willow leaf shape) offer you more flash and also tend to run slightly deeper as they catch less water. Water clarity greatly effects the style you use. Clearer water = Willow blades, dirtier water = Colorado blades. Weighs of spinnerbait vary from 1/4oz up to 3oz but if you are fishing around weed, it tends to be in the shallower margins ranging from 1 – 3 meters and a heavier offering is not needed. A nice gentle retrieve with the odd pause will see you in with a good chance.

The most successful anglers have been fishing either the faces of weed beds, over the top of the weed or in small pockets around timber.

With the majority of swimbaits being either slow sinking or neutrally buoyant, they lend themselves perfectly to being slowly worked across the tops or along the front of weed beds. Swimbaits come in varying sizes and the ability to cast them is only limited by the weight of the rod you have. Sure, you can cast them off your standard rod but the use of a longer and more specific swimbait rod makes things much easier. Undoubtedly the Jackal range that includes the Chibitareal, Gantarel and Gigantarel have been the most popular by far. We here at Lake Mulwala Fish Camp and Ski are lucky enough to have our own two exclusive colours – the Baby Cod and Mulwala Magic that cover these three styles. The Baby Cod has proved to be a must have and vanishes as quick as it hits the shelves. Call instore to secure your own piece of fishing necessity.

Surface Lures – Prior to the swimbait boom, surface lures were all the rage and continue to catch more than their share of fish. For those who haven’t “surface fished” before, this is done when water conditions are preferably flat. A lure with a paddling bib is cast and gently retrieved resembling anything that tends to be found on the water’s surface, be it birds, ducks, moths, cicadas, mice, rats or even snakes and lizards. The anticipation of a booming surface hit is second to none and can quickly bring a grown man to his knees after receiving his first hit.

discussion. Personally, if I was to fish in and around weed beds, I would be using a Paternoster rig that has the sinker on the bottom and either one or two hook droppers up the line around 300mm apart. This allows the bait to be suspended off the bottom and more visible to fish. Again, this is personal preference and the next person may prefer to use a running sinker rig of float some bait over the weed under a float.

There you go, a basic breakdown and overview on various lure styles and how to fish them whilst fishing in and around weed, an ever-increasing problem here at Mulwala presently. Call in and see us at one of our two Fish Camp Ski locations, either opposite the post office in Mulwala, the shop with the big green fish out the front or between One Zach and Rivers in the main street of Yarrawonga. We are your local fishing specialists and specialise in all things Green! For upto-date reports feel free to call us on 03 5744 3133. Until next edition, happy fishing.

Experience Lake Mulwala and the Mighty Murray with

Fished over weed beds is an ideal way to fish these lures as they tend to be snag proof. They will sometimes pick-up floating weed and lose their action quickly. Wakebaits are another similar lure that have a very shallow diving bib that imparts a wobbling action compared to a surface lures paddling action. Fish these the same way as your surface lure. Bait Fishing – There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to bait fishing, it’s more about where you put it. The traditional baits of bardi grubs, yabbies and worms seemed to have been replaced by cheese and chicken over the last few years. It’s more important to have the correct rig set up and again that’s open to

Paddle destination country Paddling with Tim Roadley The Murray River and high-country regions are renowned internationally for great canoeing experiences. So much so that Good Times Magazine decided to interview local well-known paddler Tim Roadley to feature some of his favourite paddling experiences. Tim is a “mad” (his words) paddler, instructor and coach that has been paddling on the Murray River and other local waterways for over 20 years. After moving to the area Tim fell in love with the river and local waterways and getting out in his canoe was the best way of experiencing them.

down the river where, you will encounter incredible wildlife including kangaroos, koalas, turtles, and an array of bird life, not to mention the great fishing and amazing inland beaches. At 2508km the Murray River is Australia’s longest river, often referred to as the Mighty Murray as it is an important source of water for over 1.5 million households for their domestic use and farmers for the purpose of irrigation for stock and plant growth. The Yarrawonga weir diverts water via two major channels with the Mulwala Canal the largest irrigation canal in the southern hemisphere. From the weir the water flows majestically downstream

Over time he has not only found some awesome paddling experiences but has been instrumental in encouraging other people of all ages to enjoy the unique experiences of paddling in the region. “As a competitor, coach and instructor of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Amateur Canoe Club I have been able to experience many locations which also has had me involved in setting up several events and paddling tours in the area,” Tim said. “The best way to experience our waterways in this region is without doubt in a canoe. “With a canoe you can access many waterways and hidden attractions which are just not accessible by motorised craft and impossible to get to by road,” Tim explains. “With the emergence of better touring kayaks, sit on tops and paddle boarding along with fishing kayaks paddling is a growing market and the Murray and high-country areas are quickly becoming a major paddle destination in Australia.” Although there are many great paddling experiences in our region Tim summarises below his top 10 for the novice paddler.

Echo Point and Hanglider Ramp Lookout You can expect from Echo Point what your imagination veers to upon hearing the name, a place where you can call out and hear your echo return after it bounces off the North Wall of the Gorge.

29 minutes from Wodonga and is located between Bellbridge and Bethanga along the Kurrajong Gap Road. The Kurrajong Gap Road is a hairpin drive which quickly climbs from the base of Lake Hume to the scenic lookout at the gap.

If you take a little walk further along from Echo Point you will arrive at the Hanglider Ramp Lookout where, you can gawk at the courage of pilots as they leap off the ramp into the air to soar like birds.

From up here you can experience the beautiful views of Lake Hume, the Lake Hume Dam Wall and the cities of Albury and Wodonga from a viewing platform.

available around the base of the rock for people to spend a portion of their day in the area.

Morgan’s Lookout Morgan’s Lookout on the Culcairn to Walbundrie Road is a beautiful white granite outcrop which was used as a vantage point for bushrangers in the 19th century. From a new viewing platform, visitors can enjoy 360degree views of the region with many picnic spots also

Named after bushranger Dan Morgan, the massive rock is in low undulating country with Mr Morgan using it to watch for approaching police before being used as a district lookout for bushfires during the 20th century. Visitors are able to attend from 8am to 7pm during daylight savings time and 8am to 5pm on non-daylightsaving times.
