Welcome
FROM THE EDITOR Welcome back!
Let’s enjoy the Good Times again
As temperatures become warmer and our wonderful region comes to life again after COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and border closures, it is a great time to further open our doors and welcome back our many visitors. During the last several months our dedicated team decided to revamp our What’s On from the Murray to the Mountains magazine. The objective was to make it bigger, bolder, more informative and interesting and that is was we have done with this fantastic summer edition, rebranded as Good Times. Good Times on the Murray and the Mountains is a guide for visitors to help them get the most out of their stay and we encourage you all to take the time to read what is on offer and support the businesses,
towns and locations featured here. Apart from plentiful water in lakes and rivers for all to enjoy, the array of dining experiences, accommodation options, golf courses, wineries, hiking and biking trails, art exhibits and tourist stops guarantees an enjoyable stay no matter what the age or interest. Hopefully, you can take your time to enjoy the many attractions in this region and, like so many, feel the need to return again and again. Our next, autumn edition of Good Times on the Murray and the Mountains will be published at the end of February. Most importantly, enjoy reading the summer edition and start planning your next day trip, weekend break or holiday. We look forward to seeing you soon and remember practise social distancing and be COVID safe!. Jared Loughnan Managing Editor

OF THE MURRAY COD By local fishing guru Tony Bennett
Cod fishing in and around “the home of the Murray Cod” Lake Mulwala is entering its prime time. With Murray Cod season opening in December it’s time to get your gear organised and get out on the lake amongst them. The Murray Cod have been given a fair spell this year off the back of very few fishing the lake during “Corona” time so they should be up and about. Along with the mighty Murray Cod, anglers are also in with a chance of crossing paths with Golden Perch, Yellowbelly or European Carp. Red Fin in this area are only a welcome bycatch at best.

Home of the Murray Cod
By local fishing guru Tony Bennett to be brilliant for surface fishing for those who like to get up extra early or stay out into the dark. Any surface lure or wake bait that has the ability to make some sort of surface commotion is in with a chance of being smashed. If you haven’t done this style of fishing before, make sure you take a new pair of duds with you for when you get your first hit because I can guarantee you will have a slight moment and it may end with trouble! Kuttafurra Joe the Rat or Barambah Bidgeewongs are a personal favourite and have accounted for many Cod off the top.
Hogan’s Rd and Woodlands Bundalong and upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers produces some great cod.
Options are plenty for those fishing in Lake Mulwala, upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers above Bundalong and downstream in the Murray below Yarrawonga Mulwala. To look at this closer I will break the lake and surrounding area into five different regions looking at tips, tricks and techniques for each area.
quality Cod. Casting 1/2oz spinnerbaits, Mumblers or TN70 Jackall’s or the like are a great option. These backwaters tend to hold numbers of Golden Perch also.
Bundalong and upstream in the Ovens and Murray Rivers
The Majors Creek ramp and surrounds have just been upgraded and are a magnificent starting point for anybody wishing to explore the lake. The top end of the lake in the general vicinity of Majors Creek tends to be a lot shallower than the town end and averages between 3-6ft / 1-2mtrs.
This area produces some great Cod this time of year but for those fishing in the Murray itself, the plethora of oversized ski boats can be a pain in the backside. Getting out on daybreak or the last hour of daylight will see you in with your best chance. Soaking a bait under one of the many willows along the edge of the Murray is a great option. For those who choose to troll the deeper waters of the river, larger lures in the 90mm+ size with the ability to reach depths of 20ft / 6mtrs+ are preferred. Kuttafurra Mud Honeys, AC Invaders, the old faithful Stumpjumper in size No1 or a Gidgee Barcoo are good starting points. Searching some of the backwaters that come off both rivers upstream of Bundalong can be very rewarding this time of year. They tend to be much quieter with zero speed boat traffic and hold some
Majors Creek Area
As you venture down the lake getting closer to the twin towns of Yarrawonga Mulwala, Hogan’s Road has a large three lane boat ramp and is a great place start your adventure from. The water depth around the general vicinity of Hogan’s Rd / Woodlands averages around the 6ft - 10ft or 2 to 3.5meters. Again, there is plenty of structure to cast at and trolling off the edge of the river is quite often very productive. The general area around Hogan’s Rd around to Woodlands, down to Ski Land and across to Kyffin’s Reserve gives anglers the best chance of getting away from the speed boats this time of year. Lure selection again is fairly simple - use something that will suit the depth of water you are
Once you get out of the Murray River that runs through the lake itself be careful as you are into heavily timbered areas where seeing what you are about to hit is nearly impossible. The shallower margins are a favourite for those who chose to cast lures to the plethora of fallen timber that sits on the lake’s floor. From slightly upstream in the everglades, back down to Drain Lane and the Taramia area and across to the south side of the lake, any snag that has a bit of water covering it has the potential to hold a Cod or two. Again spinnerbaits, Mumblers and shallow running hard bodied lures as proven fish catchers in these areas. These areas that are slightly shallower also prove
The shallower areas in the upper areas of Lake Mulwala are a favourite for those who choose to cast lures.

Likewise, spinnerbaits that can be worked slowly without dragging on the bottom or rising to quickly are preferred. Surface fishing is another option you should put high on your agenda if fishing this area.

Discover the silo art trail
5
Take a road of discovery on the North East Victoria Silo Art Trail, where you will experience art in a large scale and not in a gallery. Art works have been completed by renowned street artists with important themes depicting the local environment and history. The trail can be completed in approximately two hours, however it may be longer if you really want to take in the landscape in all its glory. The North East Victoria Silo Art Trail, links together the small towns of Goorambat, Devenish, Tungamah and St James and the significant Winton Wetlands. Picola and Katamatite will also be added in 2021 to the local art trail when planned art works are completed.

GOORAMBAT SILO Artist Jimmy Dvate’s artwork on the Goorambat silos depicts a passion of Jimmy’s, the conservation and plight of endangered species. The barking owl is the most threatened owl in Victoria with Northeast Victoria a remaining stronghold for wild populations.
GOORAMBAT UNITING CHURCH ‘SOPHIA’ ‘Sophia’, who by nature is wise, nurturing, comforting, inspirational and ever present, is a stunning mural to depict the female aspect of the Holy Spirit. She came into life during the 2017 Wall to Wall Festival by artist Adnate. Due to being within the Church, the mural is open for viewing from 9am – 5pm daily.
DEVENISH SILO This artwork is a beautiful tribute to the men and women of the Devenish community who have enlisted in military service. Officially ‘unveiled’ on ANZAC Day, the Devenish silos have long been a symbol of the prosperity of local grain production.
ST JAMES SILO In the small quaint town of St James, the 1943 silo bunkers depict a mural of Sir George Coles, the founder of Coles supermarkets who was a local to the St James township. Painted by artist Tim Bowtell, the silos also depict further traits of the St James township, bushels of wheat originally delivered to the site via horse and cart.
TUNGAMAH SILO The privately owned Tungamah Silos, which were the first silos to be painted in north-east Victoria, beginning the Silo Art Trail, were painted by Western Australian street artist Sobrane Simcock in 2018. The art depicts native birds to Tungamah and the region with stage two completed in October 2019.
WINTON WETLAND’S WATER TANK During the 2016 Wall to Wall Festival, renowned street artist Guide Van Helten incorporated portraits of three local volunteers, Colin Hooke from Chesney Vale Fire Brigade, Rovert Green of Taminick Fire Brigade and Danielle Spokes of Winton Fire Brigade. The depictions are so life-like you need to see these ones with your own eyes.

GOOD TIMES SUMMER 2020 - 2021 • 25
Life’s a beach on the Murray The areas around Tocumwal and Cobram Barooga feature some of the best beaches and are extremely popular with visitors year in year out. The river twists and turns around these beaches snaking its way through the thick Murray region’s state forests. There are numerous walking trails at many of the beaches weaving their way through the unique native bushland and wetlands. You will find access points to over 100 river beaches on both the NSW and Victorian side of the Murray River. Bush tracks (some are rougher than others) lead from the Murray Valley Highway, Goulburn Valley Highway and TocumwalBarooga-Mulwala Roads. Remember to check the current road and weather conditions, as some beaches may become inaccessible due to high water levels or rain.
Here are some of the more popular beaches in the Central Murray region. Thompson’s Beach A few minutes’ drive from the centre of town, Thompson’s Beach is located in an idyllic setting and is a lovely spot to soak up the tranquillity of the Murray River and is close to Cobram and Barooga. The locals claim that Thompson’s
Beach is the largest inland beach in the Southern Hemisphere and when you visit it you will see why. Shaded by the magnificent, towering river red gums and floodlit in the evenings, it is the perfect spot to relax or for a family get-together. Enjoy a free electric BBQ’s, a playground area for children, swimming, walking, beach cricket, volleyball, canoeing and fishing. Spoil yourself and enjoy a close look of the river surrounds with a cruise on the unique Cobba Paddle Boat (see advert below).
Dead River Beach Dead River Beach has an extended beach backed by a green grassed level bank shaded by stands of immature River Red Gums. It continues around into an old horseshoe bend, which the river now bypasses (the land to the west, on the new south bank of the Murray, is in NSW). Surrounded by River Red Gum flood plain forest prolific bird life and some cattle grazing. Dead River Beach is just to the north-west of town along a track off Racecourse Road. Non flush toilets are provided. There are picnic areas to the north at Big Tom’s and Little Tom’s Beaches (access via Wondah Street).
Scott’s Beach Just a few kilometres to the south-east of Cobram is Scott’s Beach, which has a large and popular camping and day visitor’s area. On the way to Scott’s Beach down River Rd, stop off at the Quinn Island wetlands, a nesting area for waterbirds that’s accessed by a footbridge.

Tocumwal Town Beach Tocumwal Town Beach is located within walking distance to Tocumwal. Town Beach is another large beach and is popular with families and visitors with recreational boats. There is a campground adjacent the beach with camping available to caravans, motorhomes and tents.
Big Toms Beach Big Toms Beach has an expansive 300m beach and plenty of flat, grassed areas. The low entry into the water here makes launching a rubber dingy or canoe really easy. The campground is an easy 15-¬20-minute walk into town. Access for Big Toms and neighbouring Little Toms Beach is via Wondah Street. Follow the track further west along the river to reach Dead End Beach campground.
Forges Beach No 1 and 2 Closer to Yarrawonga you will find the access to Forges No.1. This beach is one of the most popular sandy beaches on the Murray. Grassy banks make this an enjoyable place to visit. Forges Bend gets busy over summer and public holidays. At other times of the year you can have the entire beach to yourself. Forges No. 2 beach is popular with motorhome owners and those who fish. Two-wheel drive access is possible to Forges No. 1 beach. However, the access can become slippery after rain and has limited access during the wetter months. Forges No. 2 beach has good access most of the year but is closed regularly during periods of high water over winter. Non-flush toilets and shared picnic tables are provided at this basic bush campground.
You can enjoy access to many of the beautiful river beaches from the Victorian side of the Murray River. Many beaches are featured on free camping websites and apps. www.visitthemurray.com.au have compiled a list of the popular beaches reached from road around Cobram, Barooga and Tocumwal. A LOT TO LIKE ON YOUR
Welcome to the state’s premier cycling destination – The High Country. Forget about the snow, cycling has become one of the main attractions to Victoria’s high country offering enthusiastic amateurs on cross-bikes, family groups with kids on trainer wheels, mountain biking adventurers and serious road warriors a variety of experiences. The High Country’s surrounding towns and villages, mountains and valleys offer every imaginable terrain, knockout scenery and challenge large and small to suit anyone and everyone on two wheels.

Launch yourself out of ISO with a weekend or even a day trip of bike riding in the high country By Jared Loughnan
bikes).
With amazing National Parks at our doorstep in the region, options for a short break or even a day trip are endless, but remember to bring your bike.
Many of the trails are mostly hand-built and have been developed and improved over many years.
When COVID-19 restrictions were initially relaxed for regional Victorians in October my wife and I quickly grabbed the opportunity to escape and say goodbye to weeks of isolation (ISO), packing up the kids and heading to Bright. Usually a great day trip for us from Yarrawonga we decided this time to bring the bikes and stay for a few days. Luckily for us we met up with some friends from Benalla who were more seasoned bike riders to the region. Over the course of the weekend I discovered why the high country is regarded as Australia’s premier cycling destination. Even for the novice! Bright is a town that’s mad about cycling with great support services and offers a unique mix of riding trails for all skill levels. From enthusiastic amateurs on cross-bikes, family groups with kids on trainer wheels, mountain biking adventurers and serious road warriors the area offers every imaginable terrain. Bright’s a great base with a variety of accommodation and you can bike from your doorstep or do short trips to other destinations. If you don’t have a bike there’s are also bike hire options in town (mountain, hybrid and electric

We initially started on the great Rail Trail network riding out to Porpunkah and then took an easy and pleasant ride to Wandiligong (fondly known as Wandi by the locals), for a delicious lunch at the pub and a well-earned pint of local pale ale. The Rail Trail network in Victoria’s High Country is the longest and most spectacular in the Southern Hemisphere. If you love to ride and also love gourmet stops, historic villages, stunning scenery and comfortable accommodation, you’ll love these rail trails. As the kids became bored, our leisurely weekend bike riding turned a lot more serious when we took a detour to Mystic Park. The park has 80km of MTB trails off an elevation of 800m through the pines near the centre of Bright, Victoria. It’s one of the most diverse mountain bike parks in Australia created by the hard-working volunteers of the Alpine Cycling Club in collaboration with the community, the land owners HVP Plantations and land managers ACP. Mystic is also the home of one of Australia’s best paragliding launch sites managed by the North East Victoria Hang Gliding Club. So onwards an upwards we went up Mystic to pedal, jump, x-country, pump, down-hill, flow… you name it we did it. It was hard work getting up
Mystic (I recommend paying for a mountain car pass and drive up) but it was worth it. But there is more to mountain biking than throwing yourself down the biggest hill, in fact two thirds of High Country MTB trails are intermediate level. I was pleased to find out there are in fact five ride categories and difficulty levels which help you navigate your way around the dozens of MTB rides in the High Country. So, if you are a first timer, beginner, intermediate, advanced or an expert you will find a trail to suit your preferred level. With over 300km of dedicated alpine, bike park and river valley trails, there’s plenty to get your cogs ticking.
