THE GREAT MURRAY RIVER GOLF COURSES

Wonderful golf courses exist throughout the width and breadth of our region. The Murray River provides a golfer’s paradise boasting perfectly manicured greens, sweeping fairways and elegant golf courses set within the delightful backdrop of Australia’s greatest river and picturesque bushland.

In this edition of the Good Times, we feature some golf courses with specific holes which pose the biggest challenge to golfers.

The Black Bull Golf Course’s sixth hole, a Par 4, is 390 metres long and the third hole in the Bull Ring’s trio of tough holes. The tee shot is played to a narrow landing with bunkers left and right of the fairway. The second shot is challenging, over a ridge to an elevated green which has two deep bunkers on the left. Reach the green’s centre as there is a swale at the green’s front.

Corowa Golf Club

The 17th hole Par 4, 376m hole dogleg left is the signature hole on the back nine with a tee shot starting through a tunnel of trees that guard the fairway. Drive to the centre or right-hand-side of the fairway or negotiate a 600-year-old Murray River Gum forming a narrow entrance to the green which has bunkers either side.

Howlong Golf Club

The Par 5, 14th hole measuring 404 metres from the ladies tees is a genuine two-stage dogleg. Heavily wooded either side of the fairway, there are four greenside pot bunkers to negotiate. It is a lengthy journey with the emphasis on risk and reward once the green is in sight. Some tricky pin placements will also keep golfers testing their ability. Rated number one on the Ladies course index.

Tunzafun is a community project run by volunteers with all proceeds going to improving the facilities for locals and visitors. This track snakes its way along Spring Drive and features a 200-metre boardwalk over Lake Mulwala near Drain Lane approximately 15km east of Mulwala

This is a must experience adventure with the 43 kilometre walking/riding trail taking in the Murray River and the picturesque Lake Mulwala. This trail builds awareness and appreciation of the region’s natural resources while improving tourism opportunities and also showcases the Indigenous connection to the region, involving Traditional Owners.

Wangaratta

Wangaratta is also a great cycling area with 80 cycle routes to explore.

The most popular is the North East Victorian Grand Tour which is 311km but takes in a large part of the local region before looping back and ending in Wangaratta.

Learn more about Wangaratta’s history by taking on the Eldorado Shared Path and Dredge Loop, Reid’s Walk which will wind through the former gold mining area or the 2.4km Bullawah Cultural Trail and Ovens Riverside Path which displays Aboriginal stories, culture and spirituality.

Moira Shire Murray River Trails

The Murray River and its surrounding river tracks provide some great biking trails. Make the most of the Murray region’s flat terrain by getting around on your bike.

The Yarrawonga Regional Park has some great tracks which link up to Yarrawonga and the world heritage listed Barmah Forest.

Cobram boasts a fantastic cycle track from Thompson’s Beach around Quinn Island and

Horseshoe Lagoon. The 3.5km ride to Quick’s Beach Campground from Barooga is also a good one.

Yarrawonga – Burramine Cycle and Walking Trail

This cycle and walking trail from Yarrawonga to Burramine loops for around 40km in and out of the Murray River regional parks from the Murray Valley Highway.

The trail features a sealed track along the Murray Valley Highway, which is just a 13.4km trek to Burramine.

Lookouts are a great way to see a large amount of our local scenic areas, with Mount Buffalo in particular, a terrific place to visit especially for photography lovers. With many mountainous terranes in our region and untouched land for miles, you will not be disappointed in spending time visiting beautiful lookouts.

Here are just a few of the lookouts in the region we suggest exploring but do some research into the viewpoints in our greater region before your next daytrip adventure and you are sure to find a plenty.

Powers Lookout

Three kilometres off the beaten track from the Mansfield – Whitfield Road in the King Valley, you will find yourself at the picturesque Powers Lookout.

There are two lookouts for you to take in with one lookout providing

wheelchair access.

The second has a 400m walk with a series of ladders which will take you to a viewing platform at the northern most point.

After viewing the lookout, you can also take a short stroll through the bush to a waterhole amongst rocky ledges.

This rocky cliff above the beautiful King Valley was a hideout for who was known as a ‘gentlemanly’ but notorious bushranger, Harry Power in the 1860s.

Paradise Falls

This stunning lookout is nestled deep in the King Valley, located in the Alpine National Park.

The walk to the viewing platform is a steeped, but safe, track which is perfect for all ability levels and is the perfect distance for a leisurely walk, about 500m.

The Gorge and Mount Buffalo Chalet

The Gorge is the place to visit for stunning views at Mount Buffalo. Located within the Mount Buffalo National Park, thousands of visitors attend the area every year to see the dramatic rock formations, sheer cliff faces, imposing granite tors and tumbling waterfalls for which the park is famous.

More than $1.8 million has recently been spent on the area which includes a new all-abilities observation deck and glass floor. This beautiful area is also home to the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet and

is perched on 200m sheer cliffs and commands fantastic views over the picturesque landscapes galore. Enjoy the stunning Alpine panoramas, the chalet and a range of walks.

The Horn

Located at the highest point in the Mount Buffalo National Park (1723m) and with the beautiful mountains of the Great Dividing Range stretching into the distance, the Horn is the perfect place to enjoy a sunset or sunrise.

This lookout is a unique landscape, perched on top of granite cliffs at the edge of the Mount Buffalo plateau with boulders galore and nestled by snow gums.

The Gorge has many walking trails that lead to more stunning lookouts such as the Crystal Brook Falls Lookout.

A stone lookout shelter perched precariously atop the cliff overlooks all of this as well as the surrounding mountains far below.

Enjoy the seclusion of this beautiful peak far above the valley below and a short drive from Bright.

Paradise Falls is teamed with great walking tracks at the base.

Echo Point and Hanglider Ramp Lookout

You can expect from Echo Point what your imagination veers to upon hearing the name, a place where you can call out and hear your echo return after it bounces off the North Wall of the Gorge.

If you take a little walk further along from Echo Point you will arrive at the Hanglider Ramp Lookout where, you can gawk at the courage of pilots as they leap off the ramp into the air to soar like birds.

Kurrajong Gap Lookout –Lake Hume Bethanga

Kurrajong Gap Lookout is a

29 minutes from Wodonga and is located between Bellbridge and Bethanga along the Kurrajong Gap Road.

The Kurrajong Gap Road is a hairpin drive which quickly climbs from the base of Lake Hume to the scenic lookout at the gap.

From up here you can experience the beautiful views of Lake Hume, the Lake Hume Dam Wall and the cities of Albury and Wodonga from a viewing platform.

From the lookout you can find out more about the area with information boards or sit and have a bite to eat with several picnic tables and chairs with the option of an Take in the beautiful views before taking a drive into the valley of Bethanga.

Morgan’s Lookout

Morgan’s Lookout on the Culcairn to Walbundrie Road is a beautiful white granite outcrop which was used as a vantage point for bushrangers in the 19th century.

From a new viewing platform, visitors can enjoy 360degree views of the region with many picnic spots also available around the base of the rock

for people to spend a portion of their day in the area.

Named after bushranger Dan Morgan, the massive rock is in low undulating country with Mr Morgan using it to watch for approaching police before being used as a district lookout for bushfires during the 20th century.

Visitors are able to attend from 8am to 7pm during daylight savings time and 8am to 5pm on non-daylightsaving times.

Echuca has the gold spirit

Echuca Distillery, a multi-award winning Distillery and Café, is celebrating yet another award after claiming two gold medals at the 2023 World Spirits Competition in San Francisco.

The business, which is the first Australian distillery to win two gold medals, collected first prize with its Chilli Lime Agave Spirit and Smoked Agave Spirit at what is the world’s largest and most prestigious spirits competition.

In addition to the several first-place standings on the podium, Echuca Distillery also won silver for its Silver Agave Spirit and Gold Agave Spirit.

Twin brothers Peter (Head Distiller) and David De Vries (Operations Manager) are the owneroperators of this delectable business with a wide range of technical expertise from years playing with flavours, perfumes and essential oil distillation, which has culminated in the creation of quality artisan spirits.

Head distiller Peter said the accolades were a reward for the Echuca Distillery team’s effort in recent years.

“It is exceptional news,” Peter said.

“It’s a real vindication of the attention to detail that the distillery puts into the production process.

“The previous two years’ work mastering our fermentation, distillation, and flavouring concepts of our agave spirits has paid off.”

Agave Spirit production (including Tequila, Mezcal

globally with the twins on a mission to be at the forefront of this industry from both an innovation and quality perspective.

The brothers’ backgrounds in the manufacturing of flavours and fragrances – which is something they believe is in their DNA – has enabled them to research and develop the perfect mix of ingredients which includes 100% Blue Weber Agave Nectar which they import from Mexico.

“Distilling Agave Spirit from the nectar is a little like distilling Rum from molasses,” Peter said.

“The Agave Nectar has a rich, slightly smoky flavour and aroma which we ferment in-house, then twice distill with particular care put into maintaining the flavour and aroma of the Agave Spirit.

“Our process involves taking the Mexican-produced syrup and fermenting the product via our distillery where we convert the sugars into alcohol.

“We produce about 100 litres of the spirit per week and are looking to other sites where greater volumes can be produced.

“The intention would be to retain this distillery as a showcase for patrons of the restaurant and a cellar door to increase awareness and sales.”

The beautifully designed interior at “front of house” has the distillery separated by large glass screens, allowing patrons to enjoy the process of alcohol production on-site.

The twins father David started the business when he moved to Echuca in 2019 after retiring from managing his own business Muskvale.

“Dad (David) started the business in 2019 and we’ve rapidly expanded with Peter joining the business in September 2021 and myself joining in September 2022,” David said.

David said the personal touch has been important in their success and the men are proud of what they have been able to do with the product.

“We’d like to think our product has been made with more love and attention,” he said.

“We are really proud of what we have achieved at Echuca Distillery in a relatively short space of time.

“Peter and I are keen to celebrate and share our passion for what we do with as many people as possible.

“Although we have a small list of stockists, Bar Lee is Echuca Distillery’s exclusive cellar door and is a great place to enjoy some of the awarding winning spirits in a cocktail and on their own.”

Echuca Distillery and Café spirits, who is in partnership with Bar Lee, at 555 High St, Echuca, produce pure alcoholic delights and encourage visitors to drink less and enjoy more.

Crafted and bottled in the legendary river port town of Echuca Moama, their craft spirits are 100% pure thanks to a combination of naturally derived botanicals, the best ingredients they can source and the ancient craft of distilling.

The world has fallen in love with gin and the De Vries twins have created the Distillery to share this love with locals and the thousands of people who visit the Murray River region each year.

The small-scale craft distillery has a big heart, showcasing and demonstrating the distillation craft of spirits including gin, flavoured vodka and liqueurs. So why not visit them today!

“People love coming here to chill out by the river and we aim to play a significant part in this experience – what better way to enjoy your favourite gin, than on the banks of the mighty Murray River!”

PICOLA

Interesting fact

Jimmy has painted a wayward fishing hook into this picture as a reference back to the past. Picola was nicknamed ‘The Hook’ in the early days of the railways coming to town because it was ‘on the end of the line’. See if you can find it.

Interesting fact

It was decided early in the piece to go for a Military theme, telling a story about our service men and women who left the district to head off to WWI.
