FROM THE EDITOR Let’s enjoy the Good Times this winter As we head into the winter months our wonderful region opens up to a number of different experiences. Apart from the many dining experiences, accommodation options, golf courses, wineries, hiking and biking trails our region’s snow resorts come alive. This is a great opportunity to once again cut up the slopes on skis, snowboards and toboggans, wind your way along spectacular cross-country trails, and gear up for snow-mobile rides, sunset tours and family fun. Our wonderful museums, art exhibits and tourist stops

along the way also guarantee an interesting stay no matter what the age or interest. Hopefully, you can take your time to explore and enjoy the many attractions in this region and, like so many, feel the need to return again and again. Our next, Spring edition of Good Times on the Murray and the Mountains will be published in September. Most importantly, enjoy reading this Winter edition and start planning your next day trip, weekend break or holiday. We look forward to seeing you soon. Jared Loughnan Managing Editor

paradise A GOLFER’S

THE GREAT MURRAY RIVER GOLF COURSES

By Robert “Moose” Muir Wonderful golf courses exist throughout the width and breadth of our region. The Murray River provides a golfer’s paradise boasting perfectly manicured greens, sweeping fairways and elegant golf courses set within the delightful backdrop of Australia’s greatest river and picturesque bushland. In this edition of the Good Times, we feature some golf courses with specific holes which pose the biggest challenge to golfers.

Continued on page 8-9.

GOOD TIMES WINTER 2023 • 7

The great Murray River golf courses

Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort The 523 metre Par 5 hole on the Murray Course requires a solid drive and, with forest on both sides of the fairway and a water hazard on the right, a careful second shot, before an elevated green where the ball will run back towards you if you’re not well on, and there’s a deepish bunker in front on the right hand side in front of the wide green.

Come into Yarrawonga News and Gifts & say hello to our friendly team.

We are here to help you with scanning, emailing, photocopying & photo printing. We also stock a fantastic range of giftware, arts & craft, along with all your newspaper, magazine, fiction/non-fiction & stationery needs.

8 • GOOD TIMES WINTER 2023

The Black Bull Golf Course’s sixth hole, a Par 4, is 390 metres long and the third hole in the Bull Ring’s trio of tough holes. The tee shot is played to a narrow landing with bunkers left and right of the fairway. The second shot is challenging, over a ridge to an elevated green which has two deep bunkers on the left. Reach the green’s centre as there is a swale at the green’s front.

Tocumwal Golf Club The 18th hole, Par 5 is rated number one on the card and plays 378 metres off the blue tees for the men and it is rated number 7 for the ladies. It plays as a slight dogleg to the right from the tee, over the mound that runs across the fairway and then a mid iron to the green in front of the large club house.

Corowa Golf Club The 17th hole Par 4, 376m hole dogleg left is the signature hole on the back nine with a tee shot starting through a tunnel of trees that guard the fairway. Drive to the centre or right-hand-side of the fairway or negotiate a 600-year-old Murray River Gum forming a narrow entrance to the green which has bunkers either side.

Howlong Golf Club The Par 5, 14th hole measuring 404 metres from the ladies tees is a genuine two-stage dogleg. Heavily wooded either side of the fairway, there are four greenside pot bunkers to negotiate. It is a lengthy journey with the emphasis on risk and reward once the green is in sight. Some tricky pin placements will also keep golfers testing their ability. Rated number one on the Ladies course index.

Come along to the

Tunzafun Community Amusement Park

Tunzafun is a community project run by volunteers with all proceeds going to improving the facilities for locals and visitors. It features a great 18 hole Mini Golf Course, Mini Train, Tea Cup Ride, Krazy Kars, Dodgem Cars, Carousel, Kiosk, Picnic and BBQ area. Ample parking for both cars and buses. Open Sat & Sun 10.00am to 4.00pm, selected public holidays & Victorian school holidays at Melbourne Street Mulwala (Opposite Mulwala Waterski Club) Subject to weather and attendance The park is also available for group and party bookings by request. GET ON YOUR

Bike

IN NORTH EAST VICTORIA

By Emma Prior The north east Victorian/ southern NSW region has some of the best cycling tracks in Australia for those who love to spend their time in the great outdoors. Whether you like to cruise along the road rides or mountain biking is more your style, there is something for everyone in this region.

Continued on page 14-15.

GOOD TIMES WINTER 2023 • 13

Get on your bike in North east Victoria For the skilled riders amongst us, the Omeo side of Falls Creek is ranked one of the hardest rides in the country.

The High Country Trail Stretching over 80 kilometres from Wodonga, through Old Tallangatta and out to Shelley, the High Country Rail Trail hugs the shoreline of the majestic Lake Hume.

Rutherglen, Bright and Wangaratta. More recently the shared trail network has been extended from Wangaratta to Milawa, Bright and Wandiligong.

Bright and surrounds

Ride back in time to the 1950s when the town of Tallangatta was relocated, and the old town flooded by Lake Hume.

Albury/Wodonga

Bright and surrounds offer some of the most challenging and stunning road riding as well as mountain biking in Australia.

Cross the sparkling lake over the bright red 600 metre Sandy Creek Bridge to visit the new and old town sites.

The twin towns of Albury/Wodonga are also no stranger to beautiful cycle or walking trails with one of the most popular trails being the Wagirra Trail.

Cyclists have several mountain summits to aim for including Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham, which are generally tackled starting from Bright.

There is also a 7.5 kilometre section that everyone can enjoy in beautiful Corryong.

This trail incorporates the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, which extends from the Union Bridge in South Albury through to the picturesque Horseshoe Lagoon in West Albury.

For those who love a challenge, take on the Mystic MTB Park which is renowned for its technically challenging trails through predominantly radiata pine plantation environment.

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail

Falls Creek is another challenge with Mount Beauty at the base as a popular departure point.

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is the perfect way to discover the diverse countryside with its natural bushland, hidden valleys and some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Australia. Not to mention the endless wine, beer, food and fresh produce you will find along the way.

For a longer challenge why not try the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park which has over 40kms of topquality cross country and downhill trails suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, cyclists and walkers, and for all budgets, this trajectory provides over 100 kilometres of sealed trails and the perfect link between the culinary villages of Beechworth,

The more adventurous rider or walker can head to Nail Can Hill to find many trails ideal for mountain biking and hiking. State and National mountain bike championship events are often held here, and riders rate the challenging courses as amongst the best in Australia. To develop into a more confident rider why not challenge yourself on the Hunchback Hill Mountain

Bike Park. This park has over 20 blue trails with a constant 4km uphill ride which is then followed by an adrenaline pumping 4km downhill ride.

North of the Murray

This is a must experience adventure with the 43 kilometre walking/riding trail taking in the Murray River and the picturesque Lake Mulwala.

Corowa Wetlands and Rail Trail is one of the popular trails to take on North of the Murray. Using some of the existing network of trails and roads, this is a fantastic trail for all the family. Take in part of Australia’s Federation History while also enjoying the array of native life and flora while travelling through the Corowa Wetlands. For further history including that of our first nations people, take on the Nulla Nulla Swamp and Redlands Hill Trail. This 19km trail connects the Murray with swamps, hills and the vast expanse of plains and was the site that inspired Tom Roberts famous painting “Shearing of the Rams”. Lake Moodemere trail is also popular with a delightful river red gum forest trail which is shaded in Summer. Experience the splendour of Lake Moodemere and why not stop and enjoy a picnic on its banks on the way.

Corowa-Mulwala Cycle Trail The Corowa-Mulwala Cycle Trail is a scenic link between the two Murray River towns.

This track snakes its way along Spring Drive and features a 200-metre boardwalk over Lake Mulwala near Drain Lane approximately 15km east of Mulwala

This trail builds awareness and appreciation of the region’s natural resources while improving tourism opportunities and also showcases the Indigenous connection to the region, involving Traditional Owners.

Wangaratta Wangaratta is also a great cycling area with 80 cycle routes to explore. The most popular is the North East Victorian Grand Tour which is 311km but takes in a large part of the local region before looping back and ending in Wangaratta.

Horseshoe Lagoon. The 3.5km ride to Quick’s Beach Campground from Barooga is also a good one.

Yarrawonga – Burramine Cycle and Walking Trail This cycle and walking trail from Yarrawonga to Burramine loops for around 40km in and out of the Murray River regional parks from the Murray Valley Highway. The trail features a sealed track along the Murray Valley Highway, which is just a 13.4km trek to Burramine. Campers who are staying along the river will love the track to access Yarrawonga. Those that are riding out to Burramine can reward themselves with something to eat and a nice cold beverage with a visit to the Byramine Homestead and Brewery.

Learn more about Wangaratta’s history by taking on the Eldorado Shared Path and Dredge Loop, Reid’s Walk which will wind through the former gold mining area or the 2.4km Bullawah Cultural Trail and Ovens Riverside Path which displays Aboriginal stories, culture and spirituality.

Moira Shire Murray River Trails The Murray River and its surrounding river tracks provide some great biking trails. Make the most of the Murray region’s flat terrain by getting around on your bike. The Yarrawonga Regional Park has some great tracks which link up to Yarrawonga and the world heritage listed Barmah Forest. The famous ‘Prosecco Road’ is a sensational food and wine trail celebrating the best of the rustic Italian dining experience. Visitors can drive or cycle the trail and enjoy intimate tastings with the winemakers and savour the flavours of the fine combination of Australian and Italian cuisine. Echuca has the gold spirit Echuca Distillery, a multi-award winning Distillery and Café, is celebrating yet another award after claiming two gold medals at the 2023 World Spirits Competition in San Francisco. The business, which is the first Australian distillery to win two gold medals, collected first prize with its Chilli Lime Agave Spirit and Smoked Agave Spirit at what is the world’s largest and most prestigious spirits competition. In addition to the several first-place standings on the podium, Echuca Distillery also won silver for its Silver Agave Spirit and Gold Agave Spirit. Twin brothers Peter (Head Distiller) and David De Vries (Operations Manager) are the owneroperators of this delectable business with a wide range of technical expertise from years playing with flavours, perfumes and essential oil distillation, which has culminated in the creation of quality artisan spirits. Head distiller Peter said the accolades were a reward for the Echuca Distillery team’s effort in recent years. “It is exceptional news,” Peter said. “It’s a real vindication of the attention to detail that the distillery puts into the production process. “The previous two years’ work mastering our fermentation, distillation, and flavouring concepts of our agave spirits has paid off.” Agave Spirit production (including Tequila, Mezcal and Agave Spirit) is seeing unprecedented growth

globally with the twins on a mission to be at the forefront of this industry from both an innovation and quality perspective. The brothers’ backgrounds in the manufacturing of flavours and fragrances – which is something they believe is in their DNA – has enabled them to research and develop the perfect mix of ingredients which includes 100% Blue Weber Agave Nectar which they import from Mexico. “Distilling Agave Spirit from the nectar is a little like distilling Rum from molasses,” Peter said. “The Agave Nectar has a rich, slightly smoky flavour and aroma which we ferment in-house, then twice distill with particular care put into maintaining the flavour and aroma of the Agave Spirit. “Our process involves taking the Mexican-produced syrup and fermenting the product via our distillery where we convert the sugars into alcohol. “We produce about 100 litres of the spirit per week and are looking to other sites where greater volumes can be produced. “The intention would be to retain this distillery as a showcase for patrons of the restaurant and a cellar door to increase awareness and sales.” The beautifully designed interior at “front of house” has the distillery separated by large glass screens, allowing patrons to enjoy the process of alcohol production on-site. The twins father David started the business when he moved to Echuca in 2019 after retiring from managing his own business Muskvale. “Dad (David) started the business in 2019 and we’ve rapidly expanded with Peter joining the business in September 2021 and myself joining in September 2022,” David said. David said the personal touch has been important in their success and the men are proud of what they have been able to do with the product. “We’d like to think our product has been made with more love and attention,” he said.

“We are really proud of what we have achieved at Echuca Distillery in a relatively short space of time.

Echuca Distillery operations manager David de Vries and head distiller Peter de Vries with their distilling production in the background are ecstatic with their double gold medal wins at the 2023 World Spirits Competition earlier this year. Photo: Steve Huntley. “Peter and I are keen to celebrate and share our passion for what we do with as many people as possible. “Although we have a small list of stockists, Bar Lee is Echuca Distillery’s exclusive cellar door and is a great place to enjoy some of the awarding winning spirits in a cocktail and on their own.” Echuca Distillery and Café spirits, who is in partnership with Bar Lee, at 555 High St, Echuca, produce pure alcoholic delights and encourage visitors to drink less and enjoy more. Crafted and bottled in the legendary river port town of Echuca Moama, their craft spirits are 100% pure thanks to a combination of naturally derived botanicals, the best ingredients they can source and the ancient craft of distilling. The world has fallen in love with gin and the De Vries twins have created the Distillery to share this love with locals and the thousands of people who visit the Murray River region each year. The small-scale craft distillery has a big heart, showcasing and demonstrating the distillation craft of spirits including gin, flavoured vodka and liqueurs. So why not visit them today! “People love coming here to chill out by the river and we aim to play a significant part in this experience – what better way to enjoy your favourite gin, than on the banks of the mighty Murray River!”

Interesting fact

Jimmy has painted a wayward fishing hook into this picture as a reference back to the past. Picola was nicknamed ‘The Hook’ in the early days of the railways coming to town because it was ‘on the end of the line’. See if you can find it.

This was the first silo to be painted in North East Victoria. Sobrane, who is the first Australian female silo artist, used 60lts of paint and 142 spray cans. The entire project took just 8 days.

Look hard on the first silo and you will find the face of artist Tim Bowtell driving the horses beside the load of wheat.

The Barking Owl is Milli (Millibar) from Healesville Sanctuary. The Clydesdales are Clem, Sam and Banjo, bred in Goorambat by the Trewin family.

Things to do

• If you’re travelling in a self-contained recreational vehicle (RV), you should stay at the creek side RV overnight parking site

It was decided early in the piece to go for a Military theme, telling a story about our service men and women who left the district to head off to WWI. With two days to go before opening (Anzac Day) we decided we wanted poppies painted on the silos, racing over to Shepparton to get paint. They were possibly still wet during the service.

Things to do • Visit the silos and read the story boards

Things to do

• Learn about the history at the Picola Heritage Park • Enjoy a meal and a drink at the Picola Hotel/Café

• Enjoy a meal and a drink at the St James Pub • Discover the remnants of the old Coles Shop, where there is more information.

• Don’t miss the Sophia painting in the church, by Matt Adnate • Goorambat Railway Hotel • Diggers Wife Café.

Things to do • Check out the honour board

• Visit the historic Tungamah Hotel and explore the Tungamah Heritage Trail

• Learn more about the Barmah National Park (part of the world’s largest stand of River Red Gum) at the Barmah Forest Heritage and Education Centre in Nathalia and, subject to accessibility, venture out into the park and experience the flora and fauna depicted on the silo firsthand.

Things to do

• Visit the memorial to Sally the explosive detection dog

• Explore the murals around town and on the wall of the Visitor Information Point in town.

• Enjoy a meal and drink at the Pub.
