welcome
Whether you have a large formal wedding ceremony, or an intimate informal occasion, your celebrations more than likely will uphold traditions that are centuries, if not thousands of years old. Some traditions are widely known, such as the groom not seeing his bride before the wedding ceremony, and others are more subtle or culturally specific. Many traditions have stemmed from age-old superstitions and have endured the test of time despite their origin not always making sense in this modern age.

For example, at some time in history bridesmaids were dressed as decoys so evil spirits would not know who the bride was. It is standard for the groom to stand to the right of his bride during the ceremony. This tradition originates from an era when the groom would apparently steal his bride and hold her with his left arm while using his right hand to swing his sword and fight off other men. The wearing of the engagement and wedding rings on the fourth finger of the left hand is another enduring tradition. This custom originated in an era when it was thought the vein on that finger led directly to the heart. Traditions weave their way through the beautiful

weddings featured in this issue, including a tapestry of cultural rituals during Michelle Damianopoulos and Peter Demaio’s Macedonian-Italian wedding (page 11). We also feature weddings with personalised flair and share Rachel Williams and Steve Bonham’s quirky twist on tradition (page 70). We were moved by Jessica Bovell’s father’s determination to track down her grandfather’s old Rambler – her dream wedding vehicle. Its discovery in a paddock and restoration was a sentimental surprise on the wedding day for many family members. In another sentimental gesture, Jessica used her late grandmother’s brooch in her bouquet as her ‘something old’. This issue is brimming with beautiful brides and their grooms from the Goulburn and Murray valleys and offers a myriad of ideas and advice for your special day. We had many small but special moments throughout the day and night. But the one that stands out the most is when we were enjoying ourselves at the reception and sat back and watched both our families and friends enjoying themselves all together. We had a number of our guests come up to us and say it was the best wedding they had ever been to. And we were proud and happy that we had put together a night that not only we would never forget, but our friends and family also.

Looking towards the future was a key theme for Michelle Damianopoulos and Peter Demaio’s special day. Their wedding was inspired by Michelle’s Macedonian heritage and Peter’s Italian heritage, with the tradition of not looking backwards an important one in both cultures.

ichelle and Peter were married on November 24, 2012, at St Brendan’s Catholic Church, Shepparton, followed by a reception at the city’s GV Hotel.
behind me and then the kids came and picked it up.”
Michelle said one of the highlights of the wedding was seeing the two different nationalities come together to celebrate the wedding with traditional dancing, celebrations and customs.
Macedonians believe it’s unlucky to look backwards on your wedding day, so as Michelle faced outwards from the house, guests with well wishes approached carefully to ensure she didn’t look backwards towards the house to greet any of them.
The night before the wedding, guests helped bake traditional bread which would be eaten the next morning. “For the (bride) leaving the house, it’s a good luck thing,” Michelle said. The next day, Michelle followed several cultural traditions before making her way to the church. “Once I took my first step out of the house, I kicked over a glass of water and I had a bowl of lollies, like sugared almonds, and money,” she said. “As I walked, I threw (the lollies and money) in front of me and

Tradition also meant Michelle could only see the guests on the morning of the wedding just before she left.
“It’s because you’re going forwards in life, you’re not going backwards,” she said. Then Michelle was showered with wedding gifts, which were placed across her shoulders and then taken off by her bridesmaids. The ceremony was traditional Catholic, in reference to husband Peter’s Italian heritage. Michelle said one of the most memorable moments from her wedding was when Peter turned around and first saw her as she was walking towards the altar.

Make your wedding or engagement memorable through Say Cheese Mobile Photo Booth. From customised invitations and thankyou cards to a unique bonbonniere. “The expression on his face, when he saw me for the first time and hearing him say how beautiful I looked was such a special moment between the two of us,” she said.
A beautiful, leather bound album for use as a guest book where each guest can leave a copy of their photo with their own special message.
The reception was a blend of Italian and Macedonian music and dancing, with Italian guests trying traditional Macedonian dancing and vice-versa.
We can package a deal to suit your special occasion.
Michelle said most of the guests got the hang of the traditional Macedonian dances fairly quickly.
A copy of all photos on CD is yours to keep.
From the biggest event to the smallest occasion, remember to say cheese!
“It doesn’t matter if you muck up the steps, it’s just fun,” she said. As a surprise, Michelle’s and Peter’s parents organised Michelle’s former ballroom dancing teachers for a floorshow demonstration at the reception. Michelle said while instructor Amanda left for a costume change, the second instructor Sebastian pulled her to the dance floor for an impromptu salsa. “I was so shocked, it was unbelievable,” Michelle said. “It was a highlight of the day.” n

Wedding car wish becomes reality
There was just one thing Jessica Bovell wanted at her wedding – her grandfather Jack Still’s car.
U
nfortunately, the family had sold it more than a decade earlier, but with some determination from Jessica’s dad Warren Bovell, they managed to get it back for her special day. Jessica married Luke Pacquola on December 1, 2012 at Murchison’s picturesque Longleat Estate winery in Murchison.
“
Jessica shared with Bride and Groom the story of her father’s determination to find her dream car in time for her to walk down the aisle. Grandpa owned a 1973 Rambler Hornet for most of his life and always had the personalised plates JS-996, which Mum now has on her car. Mum and I have each kept one of the original number plates, which were put back on the Rambler for the wedding. The Rambler always had a lot of significance in our lives growing up, especially the familiar sound of the horn and Grandpa’s heavy foot on the accelerator.

shed for about 12 months before regretfully selling it to a man in Elmore, who ran it into the ground. It was virtually written off when Dad went to his house to try and track it down. Dad decided to track it down because I’d told him about two years ago I wouldn’t get married in Australia if I couldn’t have Grandpa’s Rambler drive me to my wedding. All I wanted was for Adam to drive me to my wedding in Grandpa’s car with Mum and Dad in the car with me, and Grandma in spirit as I had her brooch attached to my bouquet. When Dad arrived in Elmore, he was shocked to hear the man had sold the Rambler. Dad managed to track down the new owner, Bruce Allen, who lives in California Gully.
I always remember him picking up me, my sister Melissa, brother Adam and cousin Rodney from school in this car.
Bruce was happy to listen to Dad’s story about Grandpa and his Rambler and me wanting it in my wedding, but was sad to say the car was in his garage in no working order and it could take years to get parts and have it working again.
When Grandpa passed away, Mum and Dad kept the car in their
After about a week, Dad got a wonderful phone call from Bruce,

saying he had discussed the circumstances with his son, Jeremy, and decided my wedding was the motivation they needed to get the Rambler up and running. To our surprise it was ready in time, and in immaculate condition just as Grandpa had kept it. Dad decided he couldn’t keep it secret from me – I’m glad he didn’t, as it made my wedding planning so much more exciting. Bruce and Jeremy have become very special friends to our family and were wonderful guests at our wedding. All my uncles, aunts and cousins were shocked to see us drive down the vineyard in the Rambler and they’re all thanking us for bringing the Rambler back.

Marry me?
will you
Tracey Peachey and Peter Reginald A romantic island cruise in Thailand on Valentine’s Day turned into something extraordinary for Tracey after Peter surprised her with a ring on a picturesque tropical beach. The couple married in Moama in November.
“
Tracey We were in Thailand and since it was Valentine’s Day and we don’t normally celebrate it that much, we thought we would do something nice. We went on an island tour, and the last island we stopped at was called Phi Phi Island. I went to put the waterproof camera back in our bag and Peter followed me back up to the shore, which I thought was weird. He said, ‘I’ll do it, I’ll do it,’ because the ring was in the bag. Then I turned around, and he was down on one knee. What he had meant to say didn’t come out; all he could manage was ‘Will you marry me?’ I said `Yes’ and then we spoke in the water for a couple of minutes, then I decided I had to call everyone. We’d met a couple on the boat as well, and they’d known about it. Peter must have been trying to protect the bag we had all the camera gear and the ring in. I had no idea he would propose. We’d been together for four years; it wasn’t like I didn’t think it would happen – but I was still shocked. It was one of those most perfect days with the sun and the beach and everything, and I kept saying to him, ‘This day couldn’t get any better, it’s so beautiful.’ It wasn’t until after that he said ‘Did you know I was going to do this?’ So, it did get better! When we got back on the boat, it was really, really surreal. It was really weird to look at each other. We got back into Phuket and went out for dinner and had a nice night out.

“
Peter The day was perfectly done, because I don’t really plan anything, and I had a picture in my mind of how it would turn out. I left it to Tracey – somehow she had organised this Phi Phi Island boat trip on Valentine’s Day – and I knew that’s where I would be doing it, on one of the islands because I’d heard so much about how beautiful they were. When we were travelling, I bought this little leather bum bag to put my money in, and so I thought, yep, I’m going to put the ring in it. We jumped on the boat, and the mood was really good – nice and romantic being Valentine’s Day. Tracey was unusually excited and I think at one stage on the way to one of the islands, Tracey said ‘This day can’t get any better’ and I thought, `Oh, she knows.’ All I could think about on the boat was how it was going to happen, and every time I thought about how it would happen I kept mentally jarring up. I kept almost physically freezing, it was definitely nerves. I wasn’t myself, put it that way. We were in the water for a while and Tracey had a waterproof camera, and she said she was going to put it in the bag. She started to walk back to where I’d hung the bag up on a branch and I started following her and when she got to the bag, she was putting the camera away and she was fiddling around and I thought, `Oh no, she’s going to find it,’ but she didn’t. She said, ‘Oh, you’ve come out of the water,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I’ve got to get something from the bag,’ and then I grabbed the ring. Everything I planned on saying didn’t really happen, but I just knew I had to get down on one knee. I said ‘Tracey Peachey, will you marry me’ – I kept it short and sweet in the end. Tracey kept saying ‘I can’t believe this is happening’ – it felt like she was saying that for ages. She took the ring and didn’t say yes, just put it on her finger. Then she said, ‘Oh, yes!’ Then she was on the phone telling people and we had a few congratulations from people on the boat. We went back on the boat and it felt surreal – something felt different between us.

Mother of the bride choosing an outfit for the mother of the bride While the bride should take centre stage, the mother of the bride certainly deserves to be the second-best dressed woman on her daughter’s special day.
Her outfit should not take the attention away from the bride or bridesmaids, but allow her to feel confident and beautiful too. So amid all the attention on the bridal and bridesmaids’ dresses, it’s important for the bride to set aside a day or two early in her preparations to help her mother choose an outfit that makes her look and feel elegant. Her outfit should complement the colour scheme of the wedding as well as suit her body shape and skin tone.
Dresses available from: Shop 221, Shepparton
Wedding photos look stunning if the mother of the bride wears a similar shade (but not an exact match) to the bridesmaids. She may also choose a colour in the same family or colour palette as the bridesmaids. A colour that is directly opposite on the colour wheel to the bridesmaids’ dresses also works well in photos. Or consider a patterned outfit which ties in with the bridal party’s colour scheme, or a neutral colour which is guaranteed to blend well. Mothers and female guests should avoid white or ivory as this may appear to rival the bride. It’s old-school tradition for the mother of the bride to give the groom’s mother the heads up on what she is wearing well in advance of the wedding day. This courtesy helps avoid a clash of colours or over/ underdressing. The mother of the bride may mention her outfit choice during a get-together or friendly phone call, or more subtly through her daughter or future son-in-law.

pink over kitchen tea
Whether traditional or with an alternative theme, a kitchen tea is a special occasion. It is a relaxed gathering involving the female guests attending a wedding, from young nieces, sisters and close friends to mothers and grandmothers. The afternoon or evening is full of fun, laughter and happy tears as the bride-to-be fondly takes a walk down memory lane. Kerrie Dimit was spoilt with a gorgeous pink-themed kitchen tea organised by her maid of honour Stephanie Dimit and bridesmaid Kristina Marko. The girls planned a high tea, drawing upon spring and pretty girly things as their inspiration. Kristina had a vision of pink, so that’s what they created. “It was one of those special moments in Kerrie’s life and we wanted to get it right for her,” Kristina said. The clever teapot invitations were a fitting touch, and the guests weren’t required to bring anything – but they did. An abundance of delicious sweets made by Kerrie’s mum and aunties reflected their love for the bride-to-be. A lot of the organising was done by Kristina on the internet because she was based in Melbourne. “Although there was a lot of planning and running around, it was good fun,” Kristina said.

“My little car was exploding with things as I travelled from Melbourne the day before the kitchen tea.” Decorations ranged from pink and white helium balloons and tablecloths to glass cake domes, floral china plate stands, little tea cups and small posies of vintage bouquets made by Kristina. Decadent sweets including pink rum balls, pink donuts, almond bread, yo-yos with pink icing, cream-filled pastries, jelly slice, pink cream lamingtons, platters and fruit punch tempted the guests. A novelty lolly bar had been set up, displaying a huge martini-style glass filled with pink and white marshmallows and jars of lollies to fill little boxes decorated with pale pink organza ribbon and diamante wooden pegs. “A lot of people had travelled so we thought people could help themselves before they left – lollies for the road,” Kristina said. Kristina said holding the kitchen tea at Kerrie’s mum’s home at Shepparton East had been of sentimental importance. And Kerrie had a great time. n

Many brides already have plenty of kitchenware when they get married. Here are some alternative suggestions for maids of honour and bridesmaids when looking to organise a kitchen tea: •
A garden tea where guests each bring a potted plant, herb pot, garden feature or tool.
•
A library tea where guests each bring a favourite book, DVD or CD.
•
A wine cellar tea where guests each bring a bottle of their favourite wine or liqueur.
•
A cosmetic tea where guests bring toiletries and pamper products for the bride.
•
A colour-themed tea where guests all bring gifts of a certain colour.
•
Hollywood A-List tea: send out film ticket invitations, glam-up for the event and roll out the red carpet.
more to role than a pretty dress Accepting the role of bridesmaid in a wedding isn’t just about wearing a pretty dress – it’s about ensuring the bride has a perfect, fun and memorable day. The main role of a bridesmaid/maid of honour is to support the bride – from choosing the perfect dress through to ensuring the big day runs smoothly. Pre-wedding, bridesmaids should attend as many wedding parties as possible and ensure they attend dress fittings and accessories shopping as necessary. Planning and hosting the kitchen tea and hen’s night are also some of the more enjoyable bridesmaid duties (make sure you discuss who is paying for what), while many DIY brides may also ask for help putting together invitations, bonbonniere, running
last-minute errands and other planning tasks. On the wedding day, bridesmaids/maid of honour should arrange to meet the bride to help her get ready, and ensure they have transport to the church on time. At the reception, bridesmaids generally help welcome guests, dance with the groomsmen and ensure guests know where to go and are having a good time. Keep an eye on the bride – ensure she has eaten something and is having a great time. Organise for gifts to be stored, and ensure you have a ‘survival’ pack of tissues, bandaids, pins and other things to cater for any on-the-day emergencies. Organise a wedding present for the bride – it’s often a good idea to chip in with other bridesmaids.

be your guide let your dress style
T
he perfect bridal jewellery will highlight all the right areas and complement the style of your dress. Ultimately, the decision about which style of jewellery to choose will rest solely on what you feel comfortable in or what suits the style of your wedding gown. However, if you’re looking for inspiration, looking at different styles of wedding jewellery could help determine the perfect jewellery for your special day. While the lines between traditional, modern and vintage styled wedding jewellery are increasingly blurred, each style still has distinct features. Pearls and diamonds are the most popular features across the three jewellery styles, although how they are set and worn can be completely different. Three Shepparton jewellers who sell and custom-make a wide range of designs to suit all gowns, were presented with one theme – traditional, vintage or modern – to showcase some bridal inspiration.
Jewellery: Blizzards Fine Jewellers
Modern-style jewellery Your bridal jewellery should represent your personal style and the style of your wedding. Most brides know what suits them when it comes to accessorising their bridal dress, with pearls still the most popular modern item of jewellery worn on the wedding day. Modern pearl earrings are worn usually as a single drop, or are combined with small diamonds or crystals. Depending on budget and taste, a double or triple strand, or layered pearl bracelet can also be worn to finish the look. Large tear-drop and chandelier-style crystal earrings are also very popular with the modern bride and are usually worn with wide matching bracelets. When the bride chooses smaller earrings, I usually suggest to match a modern necklet and single-strand bracelet to complement each other. The neckline of the dress usually determines the amount of jewellery worn. A lot of modern brides are also choosing to complement their gown and hairstyle by adding a beautiful side comb in crystal and pearls, or just crystal. The bride will usually then choose smaller drop earrings and a modern crystal/pearl bracelet, to keep the emphasis on the gown rather than the jewellery. – Lyn Blizzard, Blizzards Fine Jewellers 42

To create an elegant, timeless style, look for classic jewellery pieces such as strands of pearls and diamond earrings. Pearls are often worn as an elegant stud, with a matching simple drop pearl necklace. Quite often, traditional wedding jewellery is delicate and sweet – think of a dainty white gold or silver necklace with single pearls or diamonds. Brides looking for traditional jewellery also look towards elegant single strands of pearls, or any style of jewellery which has a classic, feminine or romantic feel.

Vintage-inspired jewellery is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and tends to work well as feature pieces with a simple, elegant dress.
Heavily detailed floral and circular shapes are popular for bracelets, earrings and necklaces, while chunky drop and chandelier-style earrings are also fashionable.
Vintage bridal jewellery can also perfectly complement dresses featuring lace details.
Vintage pearls are often worn in multiple strands and sometimes feature a diamond rosette or other embellishments.
Reminiscent of decadent eras from the 1920s and 1950s, vintage jewellery mainly features diamonds and pearls set in intricately detailed and elaborate settings.
Elegant diamond hair slides are a key piece in vintage jewellery, often featuring a delicate, short, netted veil in place of a traditional veil.
Bridal vintage jewellery tends to be a little more solid compared to the often-delicate traditional jewellery, with thick-set rings, brooches and

Walking down the aisle to meet my husband and sharing in the special ceremony in the Greek church would have to be the most memorable part of my day. Mostly because of all the different rituals they have and also because I could hardly understand what the priest was saying! It was special and fun at the same time.

your shape should guide your
Dress choice P
icking the perfect wedding dress can be one of the most daunting tasks for any bride – the sheer number of different cuts, styles, fabrics, beading and lengths can be overwhelming.
a-line
Finding the perfect dress shape to suit your body can make the process easier and give you a starting point for your search. It’s important to keep an open mind when looking at dresses; although it’s wise to have an idea of the style you would like, try on other styles and cuts to be sure which is the best fit for you. Wedding Boutique owner and former wedding dress designer Keira Tracey said the perfect dress would highlight the best parts of a woman’s figure and downplay those that might not be so good. “The shape of the dress is very important, because it makes you feel like a million dollars if your dress is right,” she said. “The job of the dress is to hide anything you don’t like or to even the parts out – say you have a really big bust, you need to find something that evens out your shape by creating bigger hips.” Keira said there were four main body shapes that dresses were designed for: the pear, hourglass, inverted triangle and the rectangle. Pear-shaped brides – those with smaller bust and shoulders and larger hips – look great in A-line, empress/empire and strapless styles. “A-line is perfect for pear-shaped bodies, it creates a good line,” Keira said. However, she said pear shapes should avoid mermaid dresses with a flared skirt and high-necked or halter-neck styles. 46

Keira said people with rectangular shapes should look for styles that accentuated and created a waistline. “Ball gowns are good because they’re fitted at the waist and have a full skirt, which gives the illusion of a waist,” she said. Rectangular-shaped people should avoid unflattering styles such as straight cut dresses. For curvy and hourglass-shaped brides, Keira suggested looking at A-line and mermaid-style gowns or off-the-shoulder or strapless styles. “If you’re an hourglass, don’t look for bias (body hugging) cut because it will accentuate all the wrong areas,” she said. For girls who have an inverted triangle shape, or a bigger bust, dresses which have a bias cut will be more flattering. “Don’t wear wide necklines, such as boat necklines, because it makes the shoulder area look bigger,” Keira said. The opinion of a trusted friend or family member can be invaluable when choosing a dress, and can give you feedback on the different dress styles. However, she said the most important factor in choosing a dress was how it made you feel: the perfect dress should make you feel beautiful. Keira said while the cut of the dress was important, individual personality should also form part of your choice, and you should not dismiss a dress you’ve wanted to wear your whole life just because the cut was not designed for your body shape. “At the end of the day, it comes down to what you feel comfortable in,” she said. n

A park with big gum trees near the Murray River was the perfect setting for Rachel Withycombe and Nathan Whipp’s October wedding ceremony.
outdoor setting adds relaxed feel to big day T
he wedding had a relaxed, country feel, which Rachel said captured their lifestyle – Nathan is a dairy farmer at Nanneella.
They booked the Aquatic Reserve Centre in Echuca with the Shire of Campaspe Council. “It was a beautiful setting. I wanted to be married near water,” Rachel said. Seating was set up for about half of the 95 guests and the rest were able to stand and rest drinks on barrels. The couple was keen to have an outdoor wedding. Rachel admitted she started checking the weather forecast about a month before the event. They had a back-up plan if clouds brewed – they would have put up a marquee over the platform. Fortunately, the skies were clear and the sun was shining.
The relaxed and joyous atmosphere was heightened by the bride’s uncle Peter Sharp singing and playing acoustic guitar. He played Elton John’s Love Song when Rachel walked down the aisle. Rachel said it meant a lot to have her uncle perform, and asking him to do so was one of the first things she did when planning the event. The secondary school teacher thought Peter was going to play Stand By Me for the recession, but he and her brothers played a joke – they had handed out the words to Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life from Monty Python’s Life of Brian and when the bridal party walked back down the aisle the guests started singing the comedy song. “I was surprised but it was a great way to start the celebration,” Rachel said. The country theme continued at the reception at Oscar W’s Wharfside, Echuca.

“Oscar W’s has a wonderful, rustic look and is by the Murray River, as well as having excellent food and wine.” Even the placecards/bonbonnieres celebrated the couple’s life on the farm. Rachel made marmalade from their garden’s orange trees and put it into jars that were labelled with the guests’ names. The band played Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’s Islands In The Stream for the first dance and Rachel said the dance floor was full the whole night. The couple found most of the suppliers for their wedding in Echuca. Rachel had looked in magazines and decided the dress style she wanted – a tulle princess-style dress. With the help of the Bridal Classics Echuca staff, she bought the first dress she tried on. The suits were from Carters of Echuca, the flowers from Lynn’s Florist Echuca and the girls’ hair was done by Sublime Hairdressers in Echuca. “Everyone was so great to work with. I was very relaxed on the day,” Rachel said. “I was having so much fun that I didn’t want to leave.” n

with these words, I thee wed Wedding vows are some of the most important words you will say in a relationship and there’s a growing trend to personalise them for a more special ceremony.
V
ows can reflect your personalities, your life as a couple, the future – the options are endless as long as the words are from the heart. Marriage celebrant Jennifer Broadbent said personalised wedding vows were becoming increasingly popular, with about 50 per cent of couples choosing to write their own. Jennifer said all couples must include a specific sentence from the marriage act, and were legally required to say two of their names, whether it be two given names or a first and a last name. Legally, couples must say: I call upon the persons here present to witness that I (name) take you (name) to be my lawfully wedded (husband/wife). Jennifer said while many people preferred variants on traditional vows, she was finding more couples wanted to write their own. “Marriage is a huge commitment in front of family and friends and it’s often one of the only times you’ll share your feelings in front of people,” she said. Jennifer said for the most part, people tended to keep their vows simple and romantic, although many people chose to introduce humour. “I’ve had people who have promised to kill spiders or vow to keep a supply of chocolate in the house,” she said. “I had one guy promise he would cook bacon and eggs every Sunday morning for the rest of their lives.” Hayley Dunn and Marcus Lancaster made the decision to write their own vows to create a memorable moment in their wedding. The couple married on the banks of the Goulburn River on November 10, 2012, with a reception held at the McIntosh Centre.

The couple also discussed their personalised vows with their celebrant, Kate Worsfold, to ensure everything went smoothly on the day. The personalised vows gave guests a snapshot of the couple’s history: attending school together in Kyabram and reconnecting years later after further studies and travel. Marcus said the personalised vows offered guests some insight about him and Hayley, especially for guests from either side of the family who might not have known the bride or groom well. “I think everyone appreciated the (personalised) side of it,” Hayley said. She said personal vows meant the couple had a chance to reaffirm their relationship and why they loved each other. “I think it’s not often you’re standing in front of each other and say those kind of things,” she said. n

Tips for personalising your vows •
• • • •
Check with your celebrant on the level of personalisation you can have (some church ceremonies allow less personalisation of vows). Use the internet to research – there are many vow options published online to give you ideas. Consult with your partner whether there’s anything you should both cover, and the length the vows should be. Decide if you’re going to surprise your partner at the ceremony or share your vows beforehand. Read them to a trusted friend who knows your relationship well, as practice.

he first decision is whether to have live or pre-recorded music, or both. DJs tend to be cheaper than bands, but singers and bands bring a different quality to an event. Music providers – as opposed to MP3 playlists – can interpret and adjust to the guests’ mood during the event, so the bridal party does not have to worry about people enjoying themselves. A good way of choosing musicians is seeing them at other weddings. If a singer, band or DJ hits the right notes, get their name and/or business card. If you have a friend or family member who is musical, approach them early about performing at your wedding. Song selection There are many moments of the ceremony and reception that may require music. Tatura’s Matty Hooper, who plays with Ryan Black and Michelle Black in band The Manners, said some couples chose specific songs for different moments, and the band was open to song suggestions. Mr Hooper said couples were being more creative with song choice and themes. The number of mellow, acoustic sets during afternoon weddings has increased. At the ceremony, many couples keep the music selection classical and subdued. At receptions, The Manners tend to do three sets that become more interactive and upbeat. He said The Manners put “a bit more colour” into a set by playing songs people knew but that had not been overplayed. Weddings are a chance to celebrate with your family and friends. Keep your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles in mind when picking songs for the reception. You could consider playing some jazz, swing, big band and rock ‘n’ roll numbers, including crowdpleasers such as Frank Sinatra, Etta James, Elvis Presley and The Beatles. We are lucky to have people of many different cultural backgrounds living in the Goulburn and Murray valleys, and weddings can also be an opportunity to enjoy traditional cultural music. Seeing family members dance, especially long-married couples or parents and children, is heartwarming. Mr Hooper said the band enjoyed spending time with people and seeing them dancing and smiling. He said it was fun to interact with the guests. “Music helps people relax and have fun.”

take control of wedding costs A
dream wedding should not become a financial nightmare. According to business information analyst IBISWorld, couples still want the fairytale whatever the prevailing economic climate. IBISWorld Australia general manager Karen Dobie said following the global financial crisis, people tended to save rather than splurge – but weddings may be one of the key exceptions to this trend. “Many couples (are) willing to make sacrifices in other areas to stash enough cash to pay for their dream day,” Ms Dobie said. She said the average cost of an Australian wedding in 2012 was $36 700. According to IBISWorld Australia, food services account for 31 per cent of total wedding expenses. Flowers, stationery and related expenses account for 25.6 per cent; venue hire 20.6 per cent; wedding dresses, clothing and accessories 11.8 per cent; and photography and film production 11 per cent.
Budgets The analysts found about 60 per cent of people spend more than their budget on their weddings. To avoid being part of that statistic, couples can research different providers and then sit down with a pen and paper and write how much they will realistically spend on each item. Plan the whole thing and before spending any money, see where any savings can be made. See page 73 for a budget planner.

Cut down the number of guests. This can save money both in terms of per person catering fees and smaller venue hire. Consider having your wedding during an off-peak hour, week, day or month. Call in favours. Simplify your invitations. Have fewer but well-placed decorations. Consider lanterns and candles as well as in-season flowers. Consider using the wedding cake as the dessert.

8.
If providing alcohol, consider buying in bulk or buying a limited amount and offering a cash bar. Hire instead of buy – for example tablecloths, decorations, dresses and suits.
Who pays for what? Traditionally, the bride’s family paid for most of the wedding, but these days couples and families have different situations and expectations. For example, IBISWorld found Australian couples were tending to marry older and often saved more money to contribute to the event by the time they tied the knot. If the couple’s families wish to contribute, sharing the expenses can be done by splitting the total bill in half, each family having allocated expenses or each family paying what they can afford.

don’t let wedding preparation details stress you is key to looking fabulous Once wedding plans begin in earnest, it is important for brides-to-be to keep their stress levels in check. A relaxed bride will be a radiant bride, so look after yourself during the lead-up to the big day.
Make your to-do lists achievable Be realistic with your expectations of what you and those helping you can achieve in a day.
Switch off to wedding plans It’s important to not become all-consumed by planning. It’s not healthy to be consumed by the same issue 24-7, so remember to “switch off” and enjoy other interests too.
Don’t bore the groom with the finer details Chances are he won’t be as fussed as you are about what font to use in your order of service booklets, so don’t take it personally if his eyes glaze over.
Remember the romance Break up the time you spend organising your wedding with doing the things you’ve always loved doing together. Catch a movie, enjoy a romantic dinner, go camping, take a day trip to a winery, and simply revel in each other’s company.
Keep a sense of humour if things don’t run smoothly There is no need to become a Bridezilla! The way you react will have a snowball effect on those around you. If you react positively to unexpected situations, it should help everyone remain calm.
Delegate jobs Your bridal party and family will be happy to be asked to help ease your load. Trust in
their abilities and don’t be tempted to micro-manage their every move.
Book a facial or spa treatment If you have never had a facial before, book your first appointment two to three months before your wedding to trial how your skin reacts.
Get a massage This is a great way to relieve tension. Toxins are released during a massage so drink lots of water on the day of your treatment to help flush them out of your system.
Exercise Not only will you burn calories, exercise is a wonderful way to clear your mind. Choose regular exercise such as jogging, or a group fitness class. A simple walk in the fresh air will do you the world of good.
Join a yoga class Even beginners will feel centred after learning breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and yoga postures.
Eat well, sleep well A balanced diet and good sleeping habits will nourish mind, body and emotional wellbeing.
Stay hydrated It’s easy to feel tempted by a caffeine fix from coffee, soft drink or energy drinks when you feel fatigued or overwhelmed. But these drinks dehydrate you and can leave you feeling even flatter once the initial energy hit wears off. Drinking plenty of water is best for hydration and will give your skin a healthy glow.
You’ve set the date… Here are a few tips to have you feeling and looking your best for your special day! FACE Monthly facial treatments will do wonders for your skin by removing build-up and allowing fresh clean skin to shine through. For more congested skins, a course of microdermabrasion or peel treatments will reduce breakouts and congested pores for a smooth complexion. Courses are recommended at least four months out from the wedding to allow your skin to properly detox. No facial treatments should be performed less than 10 days out from the wedding so as to reduce the risk of any further detox breakouts occurring.
BODY Especially when spray tans are required, conditioned skin on the body shows off our best Aussie ‘bods’. We suggest exfoliating with a glove and body wash every second or third day, and moisturising daily. If you have breakouts on your back or ingrown hairs on your legs, a salon body exfoliation treatment will get to all those hard-to-reach places while you simply relax. These can be performed weekly in severe cases, otherwise once a month.
NAILS Monthly manicure treatments will condition your nails and hands to allow them to look their best. For those whose work or lifestyle does not permit any length or polish, there are artificial alternatives. OPI GEL Colour or Shellac systems will give non-chip nail colour for two to three weeks on your natural nail with minimal damage.
If you require length, however, acrylic or gel systems will be required. These can damage your natural nail and are recommended to be soaked off to remove the application – but will give immediate length and non-chip colour.
FEET Pedicure treatments are best performed every six weeks to keep the heels smooth and toenails tidy. Polish application on the toes is always more long-lasting, so your last pedicure can be booked a week out from the wedding to still have tidy toes for the honeymoon.
TANNING Spray or rub-on tans are the safest ways to achieve a natural bronzed body, however if this is a new experience for you, we recommend trial applications so that you can feel comfortable with the colour achieved and learn how to let it develop. Have a trial tan three to four weeks before the wedding so that your natural skin tone has returned before the final application, which should be applied one or two days before the wedding.
MAKE-UP Book in your bridal party for the wedding day make-up as soon as you can! It’s best to trial different technicians to ensure you will have the look created that best suits your own style. Make-up artists can also travel on location instead of just in-salon, so have a look at what would work best for you on your wedding day. – Tracey Pearson Nu Beauty Therapy

ess and Levi flew into Fiji a week before the wedding, and spent a couple of days on Denarau Island before arriving on Mana Island, the location of their wedding. The couple then spent several days on romantic Matamanoa Island for the honeymoon phase of the holiday. The wedding was an intimate gathering for 25 people on Mana Island’s secluded Sunset Beach.

Jess said the couple had decided they weren’t keen on the spotlight or the fuss of a big wedding and preferred a relaxed destination wedding to share with close family and friends. “We always had in mind that we would go somewhere,” Jess said. “We decided on Fiji as we loved the idea of the Fijian way of life: the relaxed atmosphere, friendly locals and of course the beautiful beaches. “It was a place we had talked about visiting one day, and what better reason to visit than our own wedding?” The combination of wedding and honeymoon in the same country meant Jess and Levi didn’t have to travel far after the wedding, and spent several days relaxing in each other’s company. “We knew (Fiji) was just a really relaxing place ... it suited us perfectly,” Jess said.
Bring your WEDDING MEMORIES
to life
For the honeymoon phase of the wedding, the couple visited the island where the movie Cast Away was filmed, relaxed on day trips to the Secret Islands and snorkelled. The couple also finished second in a crab race with their crab, named Schumacher for the German race car driver. Jess and Levi had a close call after kayaking around the back of an island where the sea was really rough with large waves. “It was such a disaster. We capsized and I thought I was going to die,” Jess said. Thankfully, they managed to get back to shore and the incident is now one of the memorable moments of their trip. “Fiji was everything we hoped for and so much more,” Jess said.

Beach location gives relaxed air to celebration A pristine white sandy beach was the perfect setting for Jess and Levi’s relaxed tropical wedding. The couple was married on November 10, 2012, exactly one year, one month and one day after Levi proposed on October 9, 2011. In a tribute to Fijian wedding traditions, Jess and her father were escorted down the beach ‘aisle’ by two Fijian warriors. “We also had a traditional Fijian choir sing at the end of the ceremony while we danced and celebrated on the beach, they sang songs of good luck and wishing us well for the future,” Jess said. She said the day was a relaxed affair, with the groom’s party enjoying a pre-wedding swim and the wedding party and guests relaxing on the beach after the ceremony. She said sharing personally-written vows and creating a familyoriented sand ceremony were highlights of the day. “We loved that we were able to involve our families in the ceremony to symbolise the joining of our families and our lives – we each contributed a different colour sand to a central heartshaped unity vase,” she said. Goulburn Valley photographer Liz Arcus was invited to Fiji to capture the couple’s special day and a pre-wedding photography shoot, while close friend and musician Sam Ludeman performed on the day. Jess’ brother surprised the couple and guests with a fireworks display on the beach to end the night.
Capturing your very special day... I’m a pretty chilled out guy and that is reflected in the way I shoot weddings. I aim to get real, natural moments, not awkward fake smiles. I also aim to ensure that you enjoy your special day, and I capture that enjoyment in my natural and relaxed style. Celeste and Shane O’Brien
man and woman’s
best friend
Story: Laura Griffin
Celeste and Shane O’Brien could not have imagined their wedding day without their three-year-old golden retriever Ocea.
Their “baby” Ocea went to the wedding ceremony on a jetty on Lake Nagambie.
The Shepparton couple had been dating for about six months when they got Ocea (pronounced Ocean without the ‘n’) and they credit their canine friend with helping them through Celeste’s leukaemia diagnosis and treatment.
She sat for all the photos and then danced with people at the reception, which was held at Comfort Inn and Suites, Nagambie.
“Ocea took care of both of us,” Celeste said. Celeste lost so much muscle tone through her treatment that one day she knelt down to get ice-cream from the freezer and could not get up. Ocea sat down beside Celeste and gave her something to lean on to get up. Celeste was not able to touch Ocea for periods of six months and more during her treatment. “She’s all over me when she can be, but when I was receiving treatment, I could only see her through the glass because she has germs,” she said. The couple said Ocea had remarkable emotional intelligence. “She knows when you’re upset,” Shane said. “If we were having trouble dealing with it, Ocea would go up to Shane and then come and check up on me,” Celeste said. Celeste and Shane said their wedding would have been incomplete without Ocea, who was dressed up in a tutu and a garter!
68
Some couples recognise the special place their pets have in the family by including them in their wedding celebrations. Bride and Groom spoke to Goulburn Valley couples who included their dogs in their wedding celebrations in different ways. It’s really a case of every dog having its day!
The couple said Ocea could be included in the bridal party because she was well behaved. Despite her good temperament, the couple kept her on a lead. “The only time she growled was when our three-year-old nephew pulled her ears and lips,” Celeste said. They said like any other golden-haired three-year-old, Ocea stole the limelight. “She got in front of the camera and she’s gorgeous,” Celeste said. Kyabram couple Jemma and Blaire Edward said their wedding would not have been complete without their two King Charles cavaliers, Puppy, 4, and Stack, 2, looking on as guests. “Our dogs are like our children. They are spoilt – they come in as soon as we get home,” Jemma said. “They are a big part of our lives and we wanted them there on our special day.” She said organisation was the key to successfully having pets at a wedding.
The bride’s mum Helen Hommes owned Michele’s Bridal and Formal Wear in Shepparton at the time and was able to get all of the dresses, including Ocea’s outfit.
One of the couple’s friends brought the dogs over for the ceremony and photos and then took them home. The dogs were bathed and trimmed before the big day and wore red bow ties that Jemma bought on eBay.
Celeste joked that her family had most of the wedding covered.
“Less is more with dogs and they were so cute.
“My sister Stacy d’Alessandro has a business based in Melbourne called Cake it from Me, and she made us a beautiful cake.”
“And they have such good personalities. They were really well behaved.”

Are you thinking of including an animal in your bridal party? Here are some things to keep in mind to help make the wedding day enjoyable for you, your guests and your pet. Questions Is your pet well trained? If it barks, jumps or is not properly toilet trained then it might cause problems. Is your pet good with all people, including excited kids? What obedience training will your pet need before the big day? For example, you should practise having the pet sit quietly for the duration of the ceremony. Is there someone who could be responsible for the pet on the big day? This person should be familiar with the animal or you could consider hiring a professional pet handler for the day. This person will usually get your pet to and from the event and arrange toilet breaks, food and water. Will you dress up your pet? Make sure the outfit is comfortable and is not going to cause them harm from getting caught or tangled. It is a good idea to get your pet used to wearing the outfit. You could try positive reinforcement, for example giving them pats or treats, when they have it on. Does the venue allow pets? Things to avoid Do not choose floral arrangements for dogs. Wedding bouquets are often constructed with wire that could injure the pet. Also, some flowers are poisonous to animals. For example lily-of-the-valley, hydrangea and hyacinth are toxic to dogs. Do not let your dog run loose, especially around children it’s not used to. Do not leave your dog with the wedding cake. This piece of advice comes from Bride and Groom journalist Laura Griffin’s mum whose brother’s dog somehow got into the spare room where her cake was being stored. It ate the top tier of her three-tier wedding cake. Some nifty marzipan sculpting by a family friend meant they had a fine-looking cake to cut into for photos.

groom talk
role reversal brings desired result When Rachel Williams realised there was no proposal on the horizon from partner Steve Bonham, she took matters into her own hands.
I
n a modern twist on the Irish Leap Day tradition where women propose to men, Rachel decided she wasn’t going to wait any longer. She booked her dream venue and began organising the wedding – and told her husband-to-be he had 12 months to be ready.
Steve and Rachel said although close friends and the celebrant knew about their unusual wedding plans, most of the guests were in the dark. “It was a bit of a surprise for everyone,” Steve said.
“We’d always talked about marriage but I just got sick of waiting,” Rachel said.
Rachel was also completely surprised when Steve finally proposed – the night before the wedding at the rehearsal.
The Tallygaroopna couple was married on November 3, 2012, in the gardens of Trawool Valley Resort.
“I had to propose some time and I wanted to do it when no-one was expecting,” Steve said.
The couple’s children Bailey, 3, and Tanner, 2, were pageboys and Steve’s children Dillon, 20, and Wade, 16, were ushers.
Steve said he had always planned to propose after Rachel started organising the wedding, but time slipped away.
Rachel’s friends joked that since she was the one who had ‘proposed’, she should be the one waiting at the altar – and so she was.
“I did growl at you for ruining my story that there was no proposal,” Rachel told Steve.
“We essentially reversed the roles – we were the boys and they were the girls.”
The only planning decision Steve was allowed to make was the song he would walk down the aisle to – he chose Here I Go Again by Whitesnake – after several other options were vetoed by Rachel.
Although the roles were reversed, Rachel still got the chance to walk down a garden path ‘aisle’ to the altar.
The day also featured Steve’s 1972 Holden HQ One Tonner ute as the wedding car.
Steve and the groomsmen arrived at the gardens and watched from outside the cars as Rachel and the bridesmaids walked to the altar.
Steve, a mechanic by trade, completely restored the ute with the help of a friend, working on it every night and weekend for more than seven months.
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Rachel said.
The groom’s party then walked down the aisle to meet Rachel at the altar. “Walking down the aisle was a bit weird, with everyone looking at you,” Steve said. The groom’s party even followed the bridal party tradition of staying somewhere overnight – Steve went to the rehearsal dinner at Trawool, went back for last-minute touch-ups on the cars and then stayed at Yea 70
before the wedding.
GOULBURN AND MURRAY VALLEYS BRIDE & GROOM | MAY 2013
“I just wanted something different – it had been like that for 14 or 15 years,” he said. “It was a big part of the wedding. One of my mates had helped out for so long, there was no way it wasn’t going to be in the wedding.” The wedding also featured a restored 1974 HJ Holden as the best man’s car. n

How to tie a Windsor knot The Windsor knot is a great knot for the groom’s and groomsmen’s ties because it makes a perfect triangle, Talisman Menswear’s Paul Jerome said. “It is even on each side, and sits balanced under the collar of the shirt,” Paul said. The tighter the knot is tied, the smaller it will be. The tie’s ideal length is draping just above the belt buckle. Paul said mastering a perfect Windsor knot required practice. He’s produced a slide show to help men tie the knot! http://talismanmenswear.wordpress.com/2011/07/
Steps to tie a Windsor knot Start with the wide end of the tie on the right and about 30cm longer than the narrow end.
Cross the wide end over the narrow end.
Bring the wide end back under and through the neck loop.
Bring the wide end back down.
Pull the wide end under the narrow end and to the right. The wide end’s back side will be visible.
Bring the wide end across the front from right to left.
Pull the wide end up through the neck loop again.
Bring the wide end down through the knot in front, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.

The ProPosal The Proposal Ring, Will You Marry Me!
Blizzards introduces this new Proposal Ring engraved “Will You Marry Me?” A proposal ring that guards you against perhaps purchasing not the exact design, or wrong colour gold, or wrong shaped diamond. These rings allow you to propose with the intention of announcing your engagement and then together select/design the ultimate choice of an engagement ring together. This can keep the element of surprise and eliminate the disappointment of not producing the ring design she has been dreaming of for years, or even since she was a young girl! Research shows that this Proposal Ring with the words engraved across the top, “Will you marry me?” will be kept as a keepsake forever.
Propose with a Diamond Proposing with a loose diamond has become quite popular with a lot of men at Blizzards Jewellers as they want to get the special event just right! Most girls give hints about the rings they like and don’t like, but it still can be a daunting task to choose an engagement ring on their own. What colour gold, a solitaire or a cluster design, high-set ring or low, claws or bezel setting, what style did she like? However, most girls mention they like a certain cut of diamond, e.g. Round (Brilliant cut) Square (Princess), Emerald, Marquise, Oval etc, some mention occasionally, some very often! Problem solved!! Blizzards can supply or import your special diamond that will suit your budget in the shape of her dreams, presented in a clear-front ring box, then together the couple can come into Blizzards, choose a style they like, or design their own ring to suit her diamond. The diamond her fiancé had the thoughtfulness to choose for his wife-to-be, who will always love her diamond and her engagement ring from this day forth!
You will not find Blizzards’ designs in a neighbouring store, because Blizzards are as individual as you!
