Tips for making lucerne hay igh quality lucerne H hay is green, leafy, soft to feel, sweetsmelling, and free from mould, dust, weeds and other foreign material. The quality of hay is reduced by any of the following factors: ➤ Presence of weeds. ➤ Cutting the lucerne at too late a stage of growth. ➤ Overdrying in the windrows, causing leaf shattering, brittle stems and loss of green colour. ➤ Weather damage, leading to loss of colour and
leaching out of nutrients due to rain or heavy dews. ➤ Baling uncured or damp hay, causing heating. ➤ Baling or raking at the wrong time of the day, causing leaf and stem shatter. The operations of cutting, conditioning, raking, and baling should be done with care to minimise these losses.
Height of cutting Lucerne is best cut at a height of about 50 mm above ground level.
Cutting and conditioning Leaves dry out more rapidly than stems. Using a conditioner to fracture the stem will make the stem dry out more rapidly. Thus, conditioning has the advantage of: ➤ Reducing leaf loss caused by over-drying of the leaves while waiting for the stems to dry. ➤ Reducing the drying time and therefore the risk of weather damage. — DEPI Victoria

Machinery has broadened its range of hay-making machinery by taking on the Taarup dealership. Sales manager Christian Barnett said the Taarup brand was well established in the region and the Taarup range, together with Vicon machinery, would considerably broaden the hay-making range available to farmers and contractors. PFG Australia national sales manager Scott Briggs said the Taarup range, proven in the Shepparton area for more than 40 years, was produced in the modern and specialised factories of Kverneland Group. ‘‘This was the first manufacturer in the world to make a disc mower and
trailing mower conditioner,’’ Mr Briggs said. ‘‘This will complement the Vicon baler/wrapper and fertiliser range offering rakes/mowers and mower conditioners, in turn offering the customer a complete range of world-leading hay and silage equipment. ‘‘It’s a one-stop shop.’’ The Taarup range is manufactured by the Kverneland Group, which has its origins in 1879 in Norway in the village of the same name. The group manufactures in nine factories in Norway, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Russia and exports to 60 countries. Bee Jay Machinery has already sold a number of the new Vicon 4116 balers,
which Mr Barnett said were ideal for farmers or small contractors. The baler has simple and intuitive controls with the easy-to-use Focus terminal monitor, and two different bale densities providing bales with a moderate core and a tight outer layer ranging in size from 0.60 m up to 1.65 m. The baler also features a 2.2 m five-bar pick-up with small diameter pick-up reel for fast and efficient throughput. The hydraulic drop floor makes the baler easy to unblock, and it features easy and simple loading of net roll with fast and efficient net wrapping to give a great-looking and tightly wrapped bale time after time.

Timing must be right atience is one of the P keys to making good lucerne hay. Timmering hay contractor Alex Peacock believes timing is crucial to baling the best hay, and sometimes that means waiting. His company, which employs nine staff, was recently acknowledged in a national competition run by the Australian Fodder Industry Association as baling the best-looking lucerne hay, grown by Kyabram farmer Frank Fanning. ‘‘There’s nothing worse than machinery sitting idle and having blokes standing around,’’ Mr Peacock said when describing what could happen while waiting for hay to cure. ‘‘But sometimes you have to wait.’’ Working with a farmer/ grower who understands the hay-making process contributes to a good outcome. ‘‘Sometimes you have to say, ‘no, it’s not ready’.’’ But when the moisture level is right and the green light is given, no matter what time of the day or night, Mr Peacock must get

Tackling the toughest crops ase IH has unveiled a C new generation of hay balers, with the Australian release of the RB5 Series round baler. Redesigned for the toughest crops and conditions, the RB5 Series features a superior bale shape and density. With modern best-in-class styling, the RB455 and RB465 offer advanced features compared to their RB-4 Series predecessors. Case IH hay and harvest product manager Geoff Rendell said the variable chamber round balers were the result of three years’ rigorous worldwide field testing. ‘‘We’re thrilled to present Australian producers with a new level of baling technology and performance,’’ Mr Rendell said. ‘‘We tested the balers worldwide in a variety of conditions, and found the RB5 Series has an increased capacity of up to 20 per cent and a bale density improvement of up to five per cent over previous RB4 series. ‘‘That’s no surprise, since the RB5 Series pick-up is made for greater capacity and durability. ‘‘It combines cutting-edge components, including a

a new dual cylinder hydraulic density system. ‘‘The two cylinders have 2000 psi, providing more force than a single cylinder at 2600 psi, increasing bale density,’’ Mr Rendell said. The enhanced five-bar
pick-up reels feature bigger, stronger components. ‘‘By boosting the number of pick-up reel bars from four to five, farmers get more consistent feeding, a more efficient movement of crop from the pick-up to the
feeder, and more tines to get all of the crop picked, especially short crops,’’ Mr Rendell said. There is also a new 2 m wide overshot rotor pick-up, for more aggressive feeding. ‘‘This eliminates crop
hesitation, resulting in a more consistent crop mat fed into the bale chamber and an even bale formation,’’ he said. ‘‘Plus, the in-line augers handle heavy thick windrows, dramatically reducing the chance of plugging.’’ Case IH has repositioned the baler augers so the crop is fed into the centre line, increasing capacity. Since the pick-up guards are the same height, there is a better transfer of the crop from the augers to the rotor. Adding to these industry leading features are: ➤ A new enhanced net wrap system, with easy tractor hook-up. ➤ New optional twine wrap system for greater accuracy. ➤ More durable endless bale chamber belts. ➤ New in-cab controlled drop floor for rotor unplugging. ➤ Rubber mounted tines for optimal performance. ➤ New endless belt with a true spliceless design. ➤ Rotor feed and rotor cut configurations to choose from.

There is a choice of 2 m or 2.2 m pick-ups feeding a high capacity in-line MaxiCut HC rotor with 13 or 25 knives. In addition to the rotor, these machines utilise a number of other components from the 900 Series variable chamber round baler, including a five-tine bar pick-up with heavy-duty bearings, and a full width dropfloor system which enables the operator to remove blockages instantly, from the tractor cab. Cab monitoring and control systems include a GreenStar Display 1800 or new Implement Display 1100. The F440M round baler is a multi-purpose machine aimed at farms of small to medium size. Designed to produce between 1000 and 3000 bales of hay, silage or straw per season, this model offers a choice of 2 m RotoFlow HC or MaxiCut HC 13-knife rotors, and is available in MultiCrop or Silage Special versions. It also features the 900 Series baler’s high performance feeding system, new driveline and rotor, stronger shielding, wider and bigger tyres and other improved components.

fixed chamber round balers, including a wrapping baler model, have been added to the hay solutions range for 2014. The European 830 centrepivot mower-conditioner is available in working widths of 3 m and 3.5 m, with a choice of impellers or adjustable rubber rollers for the conditioning process. As an exclusive feature, the modular cutter bar allows highspeed mowing, and has been engineered to duplicate the load conditions of a selfpropelled machine. The mower’s balanced design and high ground clearance also increase field performance, while a new floating suspension system allows the machine to closely follow ground contours. The 830 is equipped with six discs and 58 preloaded tines, which significantly increase capacity and crop flow under varying harvesting conditions. Even in heavy and wet crops and at high working speeds, the parallelogram design of the conditioning hood maintains the optimum distance between the impeller tines or rollers and the hood at all times. The F440R round baler and C440R wrapping baler are suitable for large livestock farms and contractors who produce more than 3000 bales per season and focus on silage production. These are premium specification balers with longlife components, and have been specially designed to operate well in wet silage conditions.

Quality lucerne recognised By Cathy Walker ith the imminent arrival of a baby, Nathalia hay growers and mixed farmers Brett and Courtney Vallender weren’t able to travel to Adelaide to accept their award for best lucerne in Victoria by feed analysis in a national hay quality competition. But they described it as a nice surprise and were pleased to be recognised for the quality of their product. Mr Vallender said last year they produced 330 tonnes of lucerne from 60 ha, part of their 258 ha property that also carries prime lambs. ‘‘Anything grown on the farm went to Feed Central and that’s how we were nominated for the award,’’ he said. ‘‘A lot of my hay went to Queensland although technically you don’t get told (where it’s going). ‘‘They (Feed Central) work on my behalf to sell the fodder and you get paid 30 days after delivery so the

The winning bale returned crude protein of 22.6 per cent and ME (energy) of 10.10 per cent.
At 30, Mr Vallender is a 14-year veteran of the hay game. Despite coming off a dairy farm he said farming was not an easy business to get into. Without the assistance of their families, he said they would have struggled to purchase their first farm — but now they had, it was full steam ahead. ‘‘Dad always said you’ve got to have a go while you’re young,’’ Mr Vallender said. ➤ Continued on page 7

This lucerne was recognised with a state award for quality. ➤ From page 6 Mr Vallender recently reconfigured the direction of the business by selling the valuable landforming equipment that he had used for eight years on irrigation renewal projects in the northern area. Importantly, he also used it to set his own farm up with a modern irrigation system. ‘‘Once the government money dries up you won’t be able to give them away, so I decided the time for me to get out of it is now,’’ Mr
Vallender said. ‘‘I’ve just sold it all and I’m going back to baling my own hay. We used to cut, rake and bale for other people but we’ll probably only be doing the baling this season. I see more money to be made in farm gear.’’ Among the ‘‘gear’’ is a Krone HDP 1290 high-speed square baler purchased from Echuca CIH, plus a Kuhn 2160 round baler and a John Deere 495 Super Conditioner. Among the other crops Mr
Vallender has in are oats and vetch, straight oats and sub and lucerne, while more lucerne will go in when the oats come off. He said he sowed ‘‘heavy’’ and expected high tonnages per hectare as a result. ‘‘It’s been an exceptional season here; I won’t have to water the oats and vetch at all,’’ he said. ‘‘We’ll put in lucerne after the oats come off.’’
Brett Vallender sees more future in agriculture than in his other business, landforming.

Hay, that looks good By Cathy Walker owan Hickson’s greatgrandparents came out from England in 1905 and worked cutting wood for the railway line to Goornong and Knowsley, camping for a couple of years at the Toolleen Recreation Reserve. Later they moved to the nearby Muskerry East property their descendants have gradually added to, forming the 810 ha that Rowan and fiancee ´ Emma now farm with Rowan’s parents Roger and Dianne. The transport theme remains, with a livestock and grain-carting business based on the Hickson property complementing the mixed farming operation that includes cereals, grain and hay, sheep and cattle. ‘‘Grandpa (Ron) had a lot of sheep and kept adding to the country, mainly in the ’50s and ’60s, and Dad started the transport in the early ’80s. He started with one truck and now we’ve got four; he drives 90 per cent of the time,’’ Rowan said. Given the choice, Rowan went into farming but he was quick to point out ‘‘in the drought years the trucks carried us through’’. The Hicksons now employ three full-time staff and two

This year they have planted 243 ha of wheat, 800 ha of barley, 80 ha of export oaten hay and 64 ha of oats and lucerne for domestic hay. Rowan said they concentrated on producing export oaten hay and looked to average five tonnes/ha. ‘‘It’s a fine line between quality and quantity — you
try and chase both,’’ he said. ‘‘Ninety per cent of it goes to Gilmac (exporters, at Goornong); we put lots on their books every year.’’ He said in the past six months Hicksons also sold through Feed Central ‘‘if they are chasing hay’’. It was a big surprise, he said, when they learned recently the farm had been
recognised for producing ‘‘best cereal — visual appearance’’ in Victoria in a national hay quality competition run by Feed Central. ‘‘You like to have big quantity if you can — every now and then you strike it lucky with a really good haymaking season and get quantity and quality.’’ There is no shortage of

War on weeds he ingredients needed to create herbicideresistant weeds are readily available and easy to use. Following this recipe will inevitably lead to losses in production and profit. To avoid disaster, do not follow this all too familiar recipe: ➤ To make the best herbicide-resistant weeds, choose world champion weeds — annual rye-grass and wild radish are perfect. They must be genetically diverse, cross-pollinating and excellent seed producers well adapted to your environment. ➤ Allow these weeds to become well-established in continuously cropped paddocks, making contributions each season to the seed bank. ➤ Add crop cultivars that do not compete well. Sow them at a low seed rate in wide rows oriented northsouth. Keep the crop rotation simple—one or two similar crops will speed up the process and allow the use of the same herbicides each season. ➤ Use only herbicides to treat these weeds and, wherever possible, use low rates on large weeds. This increases the weeds’

Win the fight against herbicide-resistant weeds. opportunities to be a permanent part of the farming system. ➤ At harvest, be sure to spread as much weed seed across the paddock as possible so you have something to spray next year. These seeds can also be used to establish new populations of herbicideresistant weeds in other paddocks, on other farms and along roadways and irrigation channels. AHRI communications leader Peter Newman said that too many Australian farmers were using the worst-case scenario recipe described here. ‘‘Integrated weed management adds another layer of complexity to the
farming system and can be a pain,’’ Mr Newman said. ‘‘But, to still be cropping in the future, it is essential to incorporate integrated weed management into everyday farming practice, and change is urgently needed across all cropping regions.’’ WeedSmart is an industry-led initiative aimed at supporting farmers as they respond to the reality of increasing herbicide resistance in weeds. To avoid becoming another statistic, use the WeedSmart 10-point plan to develop a new weed management plan for your farm.

Modified to boost throughput he new Krone BiG Pack T HighSpeed range of large square balers delivers 20 per cent more throughput. This increase has been made possible by three major modifications: the addition of a power-driven feed roller to the cam-less pick-up, an increase in throughput capacity of the Variable Fill System (VFS) packer system and an increase in plunger strokes. The Active Pick, which has been chosen as standard equipment for all Australian BiG Pack balers, is arranged closer to the packer and rotor cutter to provide a swifter crop transfer. The new design that features a chain-driven feed roller behind the usual crop roller will lead to an enormous boost in throughputs, in particular in difficult conditions like extremely dry material or brittle short straw. The BiG Pack VFS prechamber packer system now has five tine bars versus six tine bars on previous models and an increase in volume of 18 per cent to feed more crops through the machine faster. The system operates in five stages to feed the material into the pre-
Krone has launched its new range of large square balers. chamber where it is compressed before it is allowed to enter the baling chamber. When the pre-chamber is filled with material the new cam-controlled sensing rake is pushed out of the VFS chamber, a system that ensures the machine
produces uniform, dense bales, even when dealing with small and narrow swaths. Due to the higher speed of the packer and to improve durability in this area, some modifications have been done to the size
of bearings and the cam tracks of the VFS. The third major modification is to the number of plunger strokes. On the BiG Pack 1270, 1290 and 1290 HDP, plunger strokes have been increased by 18 per cent from 38 to 45 strokes/
minute. This also contributes to the 20 per cent more throughput of these balers. Further upgrades involve a larger diameter knotter shaft, which increased in size by 15 mm to 55 mm, wear plates that are bolted onto the bottom of the bale
chamber to reduce the cost of wear in this area, and the new colour touch screen monitor that gives the operator a full overview of machine functions. Due to the high bale densities achieved by Krone balers and in particular the 1290HDP High Density, Australian operators have been asking for scales to measure the weight of each bale. This feature is standard for the Australian market and is designed with four weight cells that allow the operator to view bale weights on the monitor with an accuracy of plus or minus two per cent. The twine boxes have also received some updates. They now have gas struts that allow operators to swing them up and fix them in their opened position for easy access to the baler for service and maintenance. The box is also sealed to keep dust and debris out and away from the twine. LED lights, which are activated when the panels are opened, illuminate the area where the twine is threaded into the system. ➤ For further information, phone Echuca CIH sales and service on 5482 1733.

‘Hay Making’, August, 2014—PAGE 11
hay making
Preservatives offer options ay preservatives are H products that allow the baling of hay at higher moisture contents, thereby reducing drying times. They work by limiting the growth of bacteria, yeast and moulds in the hay through different mechanisms. If used, the cost of the hay preservative must be offset by an advantage being gained in one or more broad areas: ➤ An increase in the value of the hay due to reduced leaf loss or when potential quality loss from incoming rain is avoided. ➤ Improvements in nutritional quality that arise when a less mature product can be cut and baled earlier in the season with lower lignin levels. ➤ Increasing machinery running hours across a day or a season, improving the ability of producers to get hay baled at the correct time. ➤ Managing the risk associated with spontaneous combustion, which results from high microbial counts in hay.
Most, though not all, hay preservative products require uniform distribution across the fodder being baled. This aspect is very important in some classes of products in order to avoid ‘‘pockets’’ of heating (potential for spontaneous combustion if very moist) and mould growth. Some products do not require complete coverage of all fodder entering the baler to be effective, but consistent delivery remains important to avoid ‘‘hot bales’’. To gain maximum benefit and effectiveness of hay preservatives it is crucial that the instructions on each product label are followed. This is due to the broad range of preservative types and variation within types due to different concentration levels of active ingredients or bacterial types. Benefits of using hay preservatives are that they: ➤ allow the safe baling of hay from slightly abovetarget moisture levels up to 25 per cent (or 30 per cent)
moisture depending on preservative type; ➤ allow baling after a shorter curing period which reduces risk of rain damage and sun bleaching. It may also allow baling earlier in a season in certain areas, when fodder is less mature and nutritive value higher; ➤ reduce dry matter and nutrient loss caused by leaf loss and shatter, microbial activity and moulds; ➤ enable baling over a longer period each day, resulting in more effective machinery and efficiency of labour usage; ➤ maintain hay colour (due to increased leaf retention) and often smells better; ➤ prevent dry matter and quality loss in storage due to bacterial, yeast and mould activity; ➤ reduce risk of spontaneous combustion; ➤ may increase animal intake; and ➤ ensure animal and human health is not affected, due to lack of mould spores. — DEPI Victoria

push the boundaries at the 2014 National Fodder Conference. About 250 hay makers from all over Australia and New Zealand attended the annual event at the Adelaide Convention Centre from August 4 to 6. Australia Fodder Industry Association executive Darren Keating described the conference as the best networking opportunity for all hay makers and a chance to discuss the future of haymaking. ‘‘We had a great line-up of international speakers who talked about pushing boundaries, new ideas and technology such as mobile apps,’’ Mr Keating said. ‘‘They asked the delegates: what can we do? Not only now, but further down the track. ‘‘They can do so much
more these days from haymaking to marketing their business.’’ Mr Keating said a highlight of the conference was key speaker Paul Higgins, the ‘futurist’ from Emergent Futures. ‘‘He calls himself a futurist. It might sound odd but everyone really enjoyed what he had to say,’’ Mr Keating said. ‘‘Another favourite speaker was David Staheli from Staheli West in the United States which manufactures hay steamers.’’ Feed Central also announced the winners of its National Hay Quality Competition. The Best National Lucerne Feed Analysis was awarded to Brett Smith from Monterey Pastoral Co Pty Ltd at Coolah in NSW for a grower and Tony Kurtz, also from Coolah, for baling. The Best National

Growing needs are covered Contracting is a LKF family affair, with Luke
Felmingham and his father Ken sharing the machinery work while Luke’s mother Faye keeps the bookwork on track in the office. This spring they will harvest a variety of their own crops at Invergordon as well as taking care of hay and silage baling and drainage works for outside clients. ‘‘We have 162 ha of export oaten hay for Japan and 162 ha of domestic (oaten) for dairy farms, then there’s 73 ha of canola, which we use in rotation for weed management — and it’s looking the best of the lot at the moment,’’ Luke said last week. ‘‘It’s going to be a fair hay season — it’s been a little bit wet for our liking. ‘‘We haven’t been able to get on the paddocks to spray, in some cases.’’ He said yellowing of the crops was a sign of waterlogged stems and potentially some cereals would lodge (flatten or bend over). ‘‘There will be plenty of hay around but excessive growth may affect quality —

it depends how the season pans out.’’ With a full-time trainee farmer, 19-year-old Mitchell Fuzzard, and laser grader driver Mark Hilbrich now on staff for irrigation/ earthmoving projects, the business is growing, and with that comes the need to upgrade and purchase more equipment. Recently the Felminghams took delivery of a new 6115R John Deere IVT tractor that they’ll use in

conjunction with their new John Deere 469 Premium round baler. Haeusler’s Shepparton sales manager Phil Hickey said the equipment together enabled tractor baler automation and would be the first of its kind to be used around the Shepparton area. He said with tractor baler automation there were two levels of added speed and production. He said in level one, the baler gate

automatically opened and closed when it was time to release a bale — operator involvement was no longer required. He saId level two (IVT transmission required) not only worked the gate operator-free, but the baler told the tractor when to stop on its own. Luke said one of several appealing aspects of the new equipment was less operator fatigue — always an issue during the busy hay season.

Young farmers talk fodder By Geoff Adams airy farmers, hay contractors and feed companies were represented at a fodder in dairy workshop held at Rochester and Elmore recently. The day had a particularly strong representation from young dairy farmers and hay producers, who heard farmer Tom Acocks discuss his approach to feed and nutrition, heard a presentation from a ruminant nutritionist and

checked out the large haymaking operation, Jenharwill Baling, near Elmore. Organised by the Australian Fodder Industry Association with the support of Murray Dairy, it was aimed at attracting younger farmers and producers. Industry development manager Caitlin Scholfield said she was thrilled with the number of young farmers representing the fodder and dairy industries. ➤ Continued on page 15

➤ From page 14 ‘‘We had about 80 per cent young farmers from both fodder and dairy industry in the 40 attending,’’ Ms Scholfield said. ‘‘I think that’s exciting for both industries and an important step for farmers wanting to collaborate early in their careers. ‘‘It was a great opportunity to create networks and talk in the same language about hay, silage and nutrition.’’ She said AFIA and the dairy industry would be looking at similar events in the future following the success of last week. The Jenharwill Baling business grows about 8000 tonne of hay on about 3000 ha near Elmore. It exports about 40 per cent of its production. Director Charlie Williams told farmers and growers one of the keys to making good hay was cutting when the crop was ready. ‘‘There’s an optimum time to cut. After that, the nutritional value drops away,’’ Mr Williams said. ‘‘Even if you think it might rain tomorrow, cut it when it’s best and just deal with the weather when it comes.’’
Turning hay into chaff Why cut chaff?
Hay is cut into chaff for the following reasons:
➤ Chaff, because of its small size, mixes well with other feeds to balance a ration. ➤ When hay is chaffed, grains and heads are mixed with leaf and stalk, so livestock are encouraged to eat more, with less chance of selecting particular parts of their ration, and so there can be less wastage. ➤ Chaff is easy to handle in bags or bulk. There are usually 24 to 28 bags of chaff to the tonne but the number can vary, so chaff should be bought and sold by weight. Its bulk density is about 150-170 kg/m3 depending on species, moisture content, cut length and settlement. For comparison, hammer milled hay and chopped hay are less dense at 100-150 kg/m3. Chaff is usually cut into 6 mm to 10 mm long pieces. Cereal chaff can be up to 20 mm for sheep and horses, or even slightly longer for cows. Oaten cereal chaff is preferred for horses, fed
Tom Acocks with a silage stack.
either mixed with or before grain or other feeds. Any straw or well-cured hay can be cut into chaff but the quality will depend on the crop, its stage of maturity when harvested, and how the hay was cured and stored. Nutritional value is not changed by the cutting from hay to chaff but utilisation by the animal may be better. An unevenly cut chaff lacks appeal to the eye and so may be downgraded in value. An excess of fines or dust particles is detrimental to animal health. If the hay has been well cured and is undamaged by weather or storage, chaff from cereals is generally low in crude protein (less then 10 per cent dry basis) while from lucerne it is high (15 to 25 per cent). Chaff cut from pastures varies in protein content between 10 and 25 per cent, depending on species. — DEPI Victoria
