KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2019–2020
If your calendar is looking a bit empty, it won’t stay that way for long There’s so much to see and do in Kyabram. If the thought of feeding a kangaroo or cuddling a koala makes your heart melt a little, head down to the Kyabram Fauna Park. With the second-largest collection of Australian fauna in Victoria, it’s tough to walk two metres without encountering wombats, kangaroos, koalas, emus and bird varieties — plus the occasional snake (in an enclosure, of course). And if all that cuddling tires you out, relax with a cup of coffee and a delicious meal in the park’s café. For those with artistic tastes, the Kyabram Town Hall is not to be missed. Built in the 1890s, the freshly refurbished hall is not only a beautiful historical site — it’s also home to brilliant exhibitions from Australia’s premium artists. To delve into the region’s goldmining history, visit the Whroo Historic Reserve — just 7 km south of Rushworth. A thriving mining town in the 1850s, Whroo is now a ghost town. An extensive network of tracks through the forest allows you to explore the key mining sites that were active during the original rush, while wildflowers and wattles provide spectacular displays during spring. Declared a Legendairy Capital in 2015, Stanhope has a dairy farming history that is woven indelibly into the fabric of the town. This is reflected in a 48 m x 5 m photo mural composed of more than 11 000 photographs contributed by Stanhope residents, located on the northern wall of the Stanhope Fonterra cheese plant. Themed “Legendairy Stanhope — Proud People, Proud Community”, the mural celebrates Stanhope’s cheese-making history dating back to the 1920s, along with a rural community known for its dairy farms and agricultural abundance. Have a free Sunday morning?
A wide range of local markets offer the ideal weekend distraction. Featuring local produce, live music, clothing, jewellery, plants and more, the Girgarre Farmers’ Produce and Craft Market and the Stanhope Monster Garage Sale are held on the second Sunday of each month. The Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival Market is also on the third Saturday of each month. And watch out for the Girgarre chook auction — where you may just find a new feathered friend. Not only is Girgarre a local market hub. It’s the home of music. On the fourth Saturday of each month from February to November, musicians swarm from across the district for Jigarre Jammin’ — a musical phenomenon where more than 70 musos gather for a jam. Plus the Girgarre Moosic Muster in January and the Kyabram Country Music Festival in November will keep your toes tapping. And those aren’t the only annual events on offer in Kyabram and surrounds throughout the year. If you’re a revhead, gear up for the Kyabram Vintage Machinery Rally in March — which includes the Mack Truck Muster and White Truck Muster alternating each year — and the Stanhope Ute Show in September. Annual shows, markets and expos include a bridal expo, a travel expo, the A H and P Society Annual Kyabram Show, the Kyabram Salami Muster, the Tongala Community Garage Sale, the Kyabram Bush Market, the Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival, the Car, Bike and Tatts Show and the Gift Monster Garage Sale and Purple Weekends (both supporting families with cancer). And the fun doesn’t stop once Christmas hits, with Santa’s Cave at the town hall and the Kyabram Chamber of Commerce Gala Night and Fireworks both in the lead up to Christmas. KYABRAM FAUNA PARK Find some scaled or furry friends at the Kyabram Fauna Park More than 600 native Australian animals including koalas, dingoes, wombats, echidna, flying-foxes and quolls call this Park home. Wander the 55 hectares of open woodland, wetland and lakes accompanied by free range kangaroos, emus and wallabies. Or if something cold-blooded tickles your fancy, dive into a reptilian world at the Park’s reptile house, home to native snakes, crocodiles, lizards and turtles — including the world’s most venomous snake, an Inland Taipan. For those with an eye for detail, an insect display provides a fascinating insight into the Park’s smallest beasts, and several aviaries are a bird-lovers paradise where visitors can get up close to cockatoos, parrots, brush turkeys, satin bower-birds, owls and endangered bush stone-curlew. And if you’re brave, there’s plenty of chances to meet and greet the animals and keepers. Every day of the week you can feed the kangaroos, meet a koala and interact with some of the Park’s slithering residents at the reptile house. And once you’ve exhausted yourself in the sunshine, why not kick back
with a coffee and some lunch at the Park’s café, overlooking the wetlands. There are also a number of picnic shelters, a playground and free barbecues. The Park is open from 10 am to 5 pm every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Another dump point has been installed at the showgrounds where the festival is being held. The event has quickly made a name for itself as a regular fixture on the festival circuit, with many RV travellers planning well in advance to make Kyabram a destination stopover during their travels. Acts have included award winning singers/ songwriters Ged and Trudy Hintz, Sharron 12 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2019–2020

In its 92nd year, this beloved community event features a big horse show, and a dairy cattle section that is now one of the largest in the Goulburn Valley outside of dairy week. It’s family friendly and interactive, with boar goats, dogs and poultry among the other major attractions. Then, of course, there are competitions with the traditional favourites, including pavilion exhibits, cookery, sewing, craft, knitting, crochet, photography and a plants and flowers section. IS THAT ONE HUMP OR TWO WITH YOUR MILK?
Drive along Webb Road in Kyabram and you may just see something extraordinary. Camels. Lots of them. Based in Kyabram, the Camel Milk Co is Victoria’s first and only licensed camel milk dairy farm. In addition to supplying delicious, fresh camel milk to Kyabram and around the world, the company produces lip balms, hand washes, soaps and body butters available at numerous outlets around town. It’s been a labor of love for owners Megan and Chris Williams. After meeting in Alice Springs, the pair worked together at Andado station and often spent hours watching camels roam in the wild. It was during this time that the dream of starting their own camel milk dairy was born. In 2014 the time was right. With just three camels — Jess, Marilyn and Katana — Megan and Chris dived headfirst into the business. Their love for camels has led to one of the most unique aspects of the Camel Milk Co story.
The camels roam free and enjoy the beautiful pastures of the farm, and mothers aren’t separated from their babies. And kindness has paid off. As demand for fresh camel milk grew, so has the farm, which is now home to some 150 camels. Find out more at camelmilkco.com.au

It’s like a Ky-leidoscope Dull is not a word in the Kyabram vocabulary Go for a wander down the main street and you’ll see that It’s true — across shopfronts and on the sides of building, a whole world of colour awaits. Murals, detailed and bright, are hidden in plain sight right across the district. On the side wall of Hinchliffe and Greed Real Estate on Allan street, artist James Ellis has reimagined life in the country with a big, bold mural. And just across the road at Anne Dillion Flowers and Gifts, the shopfront resembles a bouquet of greenery. Around Ky, you can also spy a combi van in the parking lot of Woolworths and an entire building transformed to look like a rainforest at childcare centre The Loop. And Kyabram and District Garden Supplies lives up to its name with a gorgeous flora and fauna mural. Just 15 minutes down the road, Tongala is fast becoming the brightest and most artistic town in the region. All thanks to the Tongala Lions Club and volunteer artists who are trying to keep the town sustainable. Throughout a five month period, artists spent almost every day painting about 30 murals which have appeared around the town, including the old laundry and garage, the bakery, pharmacy and the 24 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2019–2020
side of the IGA building. Organised by the Lions Club, the street art complements the 10 murals around the town painted by artist and club president Murray Ross in 2001 as part of a centenary of federation project and 14 murals placed outside the Nestle dairy plant in 2004, all of which tell the history and character of the town. And in Stanhope, a piece of art known as the ‘Legendairy Mural’ has become a much-loved landmark.
On the northern wall of Fonterra’s cheese plant, the photo mural is composed of more than 11,000 photographs contributed by Stanhope residents. Each image has been captured as a tiny mosaic tile that contributes to the entire mural, measuring a stunning 48 m x 5 m. Themed “Legendairy Stanhope — Proud People, Proud Community”, the mural celebrates Stanhope’s cheese-making history dating back to the 1920s, along with a rural community known for its dairy farms and agricultural abundance. KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2019–2020 65
A SNAPSHOT OF AN AMAZING STORY Kyabram was formerly part of the Wyuna Estate of which M F Scobie was recorded as the first squatter in 1840. From 1869 to 1872 the area was in the name of James McBain and was used as a sheep run. Settlement began in 1873 when land became open for selection under the 1869 Lands Settlement Act. The district was thickly forested, the land was harsh and dry and the nearest source of water was the squatter’s tank to the south of the town, with the Goulburn the closest river. Kyabram was only one of a few small settlements at that time, with Henley three miles South, Pine Grove one mile North-West, Taripta three miles North-East, and Lancaster to the East. In the early 1880s Henley appeared to be the focal area of the district where most activities of the time were centred. Henley was described as having the “Gatehouse Hotel”, a general store and post office, saleyards, hall, blacksmith, butcher’s shop, dressmaker, police station and lock-up and two churches — Catholic and Church of England. The first business house in Kyabram was a 66 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2019–2020
grocery and produce store opened by Mr. Grouse of Rushworth in 1876. A few years later it became the Albion Hotel. The following businesses gradually appeared: Mr Trevaskis — butcher’s shop; Mr O’Bryan — hotel; Mr David Mellis — bootmaker’s shop and post office; Mr Stolkosky — boots and soft-goods; Johnson & Forge — drapers and general merchants; Mr Fields — blacksmith; Hugh Ryan — butchery, store and drapery (later the Commercial Hotel) and W Faragher — saddle and harness maker. Then followed in Albion St: Mr Padley’s Grain Store; the police station and Crothers & Parkinson’s Blacksmith shop. In October 1884, the Post Master General notified the township of Kyabram that the name of

the district on a regular basis. Horse parades and hare shoots were held. Rifle clubs were formed and competitions resulted. There were the occasional cricket and football matches. Quoit matches were first mentioned in 1883 and in 1888 a skating rink was operating in Miller & Miller’s coach factory. Entertainment consisted of concerts and balls, church and school picnics and church tea meetings. There were many small schools established in the area in the early years of settlement. Kyabram Railway School No 2902 in Unitt St was completed in 1891. Classes were held from 1888–1891 in the wooden Presbyterian Church in Church St. The new school at Haslem St was opened in 1915. The Closer Settlement Scheme for farming was introduced into the district prior to WWI and the Soldier Settlement Scheme after WWI and WWII.
their new post office would be named ‘SHERIDAN’ after an American General who was visiting Victoria at the time. The townsfolk were quite upset by this, as very few had ever heard of this man before, so many protests were put forward. Finally, 18 months later in April 1886, the post office was re-christened by the government to the name of ‘KYABRAM’. The early settlers were eager to have the railway extended through the area, which caused debates as to where the line and station should go — the options at the time being Henley, Taripta, Kyabram or Pine Grove. It was not until 1886 that the battle was won by Kyabram and tenders were called on April 14, 1886 for the construction of the line between Toolamba and Echuca. The official opening of the railway took place in Kyabram on August 18, 1887. From this time onwards Kyabram continued to develop as the central area. The main activities at the time were “ploughing matches”. These were held at various properties in
The Reform Movement One of the major contributions to put Kyabram on the map was the formation of the “Kyabram Reform Movement”. Mr G H Bishop called a public meeting in the Kyabram Mechanics’ Institute on November 13, 1901, for the purpose of initiating an agitation to bring about parliamentary reform and state retrenchment, and to also bring about a reduction of the extravagant expenditure of public funds that had been going on in the past. His intention was to agitate this matter throughout every shire and public body in the colony, and that is exactly what happened. The “Kyabram Reform Movement” formed a committee at that first meeting and then called a public meeting in Melbourne to be held in the Athenaeum Hall on April 17, 1902. Three-hundred delegates from around the state attended and completely supported the resolutions of the Kyabram committee. Consequently, Kyabram members were elected to central positions in the new executive committee. It was termed by the Premier of Victoria as “that remarkable and almost unparalleled movement which had originated in Kyabram”. Testament to the publicity Kyabram received through this reform movement include numerous articles, poems and cartoons, (mostly full page) which appeared continually for two years in the PUNCH magazine in 1902 and 1903.
