Fall in love
WITH KYABRAM There is so much to do and love in Kyabram, whether you are a long-time resident or visiting for a while. Visit the fauna park with its unique collection of Australian wildlife living across 55 hectares, including 33ha of local wetlands. Home to more than 400 iconic native animals including Tasmanian devils, shortbeaked echidnas, alpine dingoes, as well as a mob of mischievous meerkats. Get up close and personal with a koala with their cute nose, little fluffy ears and incredible climbing claws, take a behind-the-scene tour with the reptile keepers to have a meetand-greet with some of the snakes, frog and lizards that call the park home or help feed the cassowary morning tea with the zookeepers. Kyabram is a mecca for art lovers with the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery hosting multiple exhibitions of local, national and travelling collections throughout the year, across its four gallery spaces. Most of the year, you will find a focus in at least one room at the gallery, its textiles with work produced by artists more akin to art than traditional sowing. Exhibitions can range through all mediums and are not limited to painting, craft, pottery, mix medium and photography. The Kyabram Town Hall gallery also includes an information centre. 6
Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
You can start exploring the region’s Silo Art Trail, from Kyabram with a visit to the Kyabram Water Tank with its mural inspired by the endangered animals that live at the fauna park. Use Kyabram as your base while you explore the region’s Silo Art Trail with the massive silo artworks only a short drive away in Colbinabbin and Rochester, street art in Tongala, community murals in Stanhope, multiple galleries and art spaces in Echuca and the mural park in Rochester. Girgarrre comes alive with music with its sound walk park, annual Moosic Muster and 10 months of the year, Jigarre Jammin’ sessions. Like many country towns, Kyabram is a hub for community sport with everything that can be played with or without a bat or ball enjoyed. If the season permits pop along to a local football, netball or cricket match to cheer along the teams. Have a hit at the lawn tennis club, bowl a set or two with state players at the lawn bowls club or play a round at the 18-hole par three golf course. Kyabram is not without its share of free community events that welcome locals and visitors alike to the community. In the lead-up to Christmas the main shopping precinct comes alive with the Kyabram Bush Market, and the shop local 12 Days of Christmas.
For large events that bring people to town, Kyabram hosts the Kyabram Taste and Tunes in February, Kyabram Rodeo in March, Kyabram Agricutural Show in October and the RV Country music festival in November. The surrounding communities also know how to put on family friendly events with the Rushworth Heritage Festival on Easter Saturday and Tongala Eats and Beats in October. If a stroll through markets searching for what your heart desires is your thing, each month the Stanhope Monster garage sale is on the second Sunday, Rushworth market is on the third Saturday and the Girgarre produce and craft market the second Sunday. While you are in Girgarre, visit the world class Gargarro Botanical Gardens. One of the most unique experiences you can ever have, happens just west of Kyabram and only in the month of February, the Sunflowers of Timmering. Surround yourself with sunflowers for the ideal selfie and take in the beauty of the region. If you are looking for a place to fall in love with, Kyabram is the perfect destination. Nurture curiosity FOR THE NATURAL WORLD
Kyabram Fauna Park is a wildlife haven set to spark a sense of wonder. The park is home to more than 400 iconic native animals, including koalas, Tasmanian devils, short-beaked echidnas, and alpine dingoes, as well as a mob of mischievous meerkats. Roll up to the recently refurbished café and enjoy a delicious brew while watching the Meerkats’ playful antics, before setting out to explore the 55 hectares, which includes 33 ha of wetlands. Kyabram Fauna Park director Lachlan Gordon said the Meerkat mob was not the only new attraction for firsttimers or returning animal enthusiasts. “Since 2022, we have introduced several new experiences and animal habitats,” Mr Gordon said. “In particular, we’re excited to introduce our visitors to some of Australia’s most remarkable scaly and shelled creatures who reside in our new purpose-built Reptile Habitat.” 8
Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
The Kyabram Fauna Park Reptile Habitat features 14 reptile species and beautiful green tree frogs. Notable residents include Australia’s inland taipan and south-east Asia’s reticulated python — the world’s most venomous and longest snake species. “Our resident animals are fascinating, however, the most magical part of the park is by far the natural landscape,” Mr Gordon said. “We work hard to showcase the surrounds and the wild animals who choose to visit or make their home here.” Novice bird watchers and avid twitchers can hide among the trees and spot dozens of unique bird species in the newly refurbished birdhide. Thousands of migrating and native bird species are visible from the hide, which offers a 360-degree view of the thriving wetlands ecosystem. At least 36 species of migratory birds visit Australian wetlands each year, with
many travelling more than 20,000 km to the northern hemisphere and back. Among them are great egrets, nankeen night herons, brolgas and royal spoonbills — all visible at Kyabram Fauna Park. Take your adventure to the next level with one of the unique animal experiences on offer. These include a close-up with everyone’s favourite dozey marsupial — the koala, a hosted tour of the Reptile Habitat, or an opportunity to meet Australia’s most dangerous bird — the cassowary. Each experience is delivered by a dedicated zoo keeper, who will share insights into how they care for the park’s animals. There’s also a healthy dose of history to explore within the historic Hazelman family home — a four-room cottage that was transported to the park. The cottage contains an interesting collection of memorabilia, photographs and period furniture. The surrounding Transport Through Time >> Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024

SHOW TURNS ON COUNTRY TRADITION The Kyabram Agricultural Show will be back next year with all the family fun and agricultural events you will find at a traditional country show. Kyabram AH&P Society Inc secretary Janelle McDonald can think of nothing nicer than the smile on a child’s face when they win a ribbon in any class at the show. “There is nothing nicer than the face on a little kid if they have won a ribbon or prize money, their little faces just glow, it is all worth it,” Janelle said. The show will have all the usual classes; cattle, horses, dogs, poultry, boer goats, arts and craft, and cooking, along with sideshows and free entertainment for the kids. The 2023 show was expanded to include a twilight youth dairy show, for young people from eight to 21 years old to show off their calf rearing and handling skills, on the Friday night. Outside of the twilight youth dairy show, the dairy cattle judging is on Saturday as per usual, with the all breeds at noon. “The annual horse show will start at 8.30 am and I think the horses go most of the day, it is quite a big horse show,” Janelle said. “They are having a kids class where the kids can go and they get dressed up, for the young ones that are too little or not experienced enough to be judged in the general classes.” This class is for non-regular show goers, starting at noon in the rodeo area of the arena, with no riding jackets allowed and all competitors receiving a ribbon and taking part in a grand parade. Kyabram Agricultural Show, is on the third Saturday in October each year, which in
2024 is Saturday, October 19, at the Kyabram Showgrounds, Anderson St, Kyabram. For information on the competition schedule contact Janelle McDonald on 0499 656 075 or email kyabram.show.rodeo@gmail.com Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024 17

ARE BACK Cowboys and cowgirls gather around for the 78th Kyabram Rodeo as the cowboy nods out of the chute, next Labour Day long weekend. Kyabram Rodeo secretary Janelle McDonald is already taking bookings for sites, as the event is growing more and more in popularity. “The rodeo doesn’t change a lot, it is just getting bigger and better and more amazing every year. “The animals are getting bigger, stronger and more dangerous and the cowboys more 18 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
fearless, because they keep getting in there and keep going. “It is such entertainment because of what it is. “Rodeos are becoming very popular. “We had a massive crowd last year and it is getting bigger every year.” The rodeo is going to have the same band as in 2023, the Iain Archibald band, to perform at the after party. “The band afterwards, Iain Archibald, he was absolutely amazing,” Janelle said. “He played the national anthem this year and he did the second verse, nobody does the second verse, so that sort of shocked everyone.
“The rodeos are making such a comeback and the animals are such amazing animals. The Kyabram Rodeo is put on by McPhee Rodeo Company and is part of the long weekend tri-series with rodeos in Merrijig on Saturday and Chiltern on Sunday. Kyabram Rodeo is at the Kyabram Showgrounds on Friday, March 8 2024, with gates opening at 5 pm, for a 7 pm start. Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024 19

The Colbinabbin art silos show different parts of life in Colbinabbin over the years. >>
The Campaspe Art Trail stretches from Kyabram through to Gunbower taking in part of the Australian Silo Art Trail. Using Kyabram as your base, the journey around the Campaspe art trail starts with the Kyabram Water Tank mural by artist Jimmy Dvate. The mural highlights the animals, birds and wetlands of the Kyabram Fauna Park. The eastern long neck turtle, a golden whistler bird, a red-capped robin, yellow crimson rosetta, a Major-Mitchell cockatoo, a plains-wanderer, a spotted quoll, a blue skimmer dragonfly, a brolga and a bush stonecurlew all come to life on the water tank. The best place to view the Kyabram Water Tank mural is at the viewing platform on the old Kyabram train station platform, which can be found on the corner of Union and Drum Sts. 22 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
To give you time to make the most of this beautiful piece of art, there is a picnic area, and plenty of parking, including room for caravans. This makes it the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy lunch while admiring the artwork. Kyabram Town Hall Gallery is a hub of history and art, with four gallery spaces changing displays every two months, except for the space maintained by the Splinters Contemporary Artists, which updates their exhibitions after three months. Focusing on all artistic mediums, a favourite of the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery is textile art, with many national travelling shows passing through the doors each year. Out from Kyabram you will find Tongala, the home of street art, with more than 50
amazing artworks lining the streets that tell the story of the town. The Girgarre sound walk is where you can take a stroll while creating unique sounds and songs with public music instruments made out of recycled things. Stanhope has a range of murals with a focus on the town’s people with a mural on the Fonterra factory featuring 11,000 photos of the community. For those interested in military history, in the centre of Stanhope is a depiction of Australia’s largest maritime disaster, the losing of the Montevideo Maru with all souls on board on July 1, 1942.

Travel to Colbinabbin to see one of the most wonderful pieces of silo art imaginable with five privately owned silos painted by artist Tim Bowtell. >> Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024 23
>> The silos depict significant events in the history of Colbinabbin including paintings of the early farmers picnics, transporting grain to and from the Colbinabbin silos, the role of the CFA and channel building to the town, and the massive tractor pull from the 1980s. Rochester has silos painted by Jimmy Dvate, the same artist that painted the Kyabram Water tank. The GrainCorp silos at Rochester are an impressive dedication to local flora and fauna with murals of threatened the azure kingfisher, the squirrel glider and the large duck-billed platypus.
24 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
Public art in Rochester is not limited to the GrainCorp silos, as there are more than 50 pieces of public art spread throughout the town including a mural park in Moore St and a mural featuring former Rochester local and homicide detective Ron Iddles. A highlight of all of Rochester’s public art is the annual mural festival held in February each year. If you want to be immersed in art, Kyabram is the ideal place to base your journey through the Campaspe Art Trail.

A TASTE OF ALL KY HAS TO OFFER Kyabram Taste and Tunes is all about supporting local food, businesses and the community. “Our motivation behind it was one, to support local businesses and community, and two, to have a fantastic event in Kyabram,” Kyabram Taste and Tunes committee member Carmen Nicholson said. “Last year, we attracted around 4000 people and are hoping to get as many, if not more in 2024,” Carmen said. “It is all about supporting locals and showcasing the amazing things that Kyabram has as a community for visitors to town. “Even for people to see and taste the amazing food options that are available in Kyabram, we have some absolute rippers and last year they diversified their offerings.” 26 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
Food vendors for the event are only from a 20 km radius around Kyabram, to encourage businesses to get involved and everyone to support local eateries. This means that many local cafes, restaurants and hotels set up on Allan St with their offerings. Music for the night will be the Baker Boys Band and Stumbling North, who will
guarantee to get visitors’ toes tapping and up dancing. For the kids there will be plenty to do and be entertained with free children’s activities. Entry is free to Kyabram Taste and Tunes, Allan St, Kyabram, Saturday, February 3 from 5 pm to 10.30 pm. SEA OF SUNFLOWERS IN FEBRUARY The Sunflowers of Timmering stretch as far as you can see, but only for the month of February. Farmers Adam and Claira Whipp grow sunflowers each year, then open up the gates of the family farm and share the bright yellow blooms. “We sow 35,000 seeds to the hectare, over 12ha, so 420,000 plants,” Adam said. “Last time we did it we grew 16 ha of sunflowers, which is one million sunflowers. “We do them every year, except for last year because of the floods, we couldn’t get them sown. “We do it every year just to bring some joy to family, friends, everybody really, and let

them come out, take some photos and play in the sunflowers for an hour or so.” The Whipps open the farm up to everyone, but only on weekends. “Sunflowers are hard to plant, hard to grow, hard to harvest and hard to keep the weeds out of,” Adam said. “You can come and pay an entry fee and spend as long as you want in the sunflowers. “Take photos, there are sunflowers you can pick to take home as a single stem or a bunch. “People come and have picnics in there. “It happens in February, but due to the very nature of farming, the expected date is unknown.
Adam and Claira Whipp’s sunflower farm at Timmering. Photo: Cath Grey
“We had hundreds and hundreds of people from all over Victoria come and have a look, people from Melbourne, Gippsland, Ballarat, everywhere.” As part of the Sunflowers of Timmering experience, Claira uses her skills as a photographer to hold sunset photoshoots when the sunflowers are
looking the best for families, couples, children and friends. Sunflowers of Timmering are expected to be open on weekends only in February, when the flowers are looking their best. Keep an eye on the Sunflowers of Timmering Facebook and Instagram pages for opening dates and the cost to pick your own sunflowers.

DISCOVER A range of art The Kyabram Town Hall Gallery is a community focus for locals and visitors alike. The historic building contains four gallery spaces, a visitors information centre and a secondhand bookshop. One of the gallery spaces is used by Splinters Contemporary Artists, a group of artists from the Goulburn Valley region, with exhibitions from the group changing every three months. The remaining gallery spaces change every two months, with a diverse range of exhibitions from local and national artists, as well as touring shows. “If we have any major focus it is textiles,” Kyabram Town Hall Gallery chairperson Vicki Neele said. 32 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
“In the past that used to be clothing, but now it is more textile art, quilting and that kind of thing. “We usually have at least one of the gallery spaces displaying textile art, not all the time, but often. “For example, at the moment, we have a really great embroidery collection. “It is embroidery, but it is art, they are all hand sewn.” The exhibition’s you might find at the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery may include, but will not be limited to collage, oil and acrylic painting, photography, ceramic and basket weaving, on top of any textile art. “We have a big basketry exhibition coming up in the new year,” Vicki said.
“A group of basket makers from the region, they have exhibited here before and they are very popular, they are not just baskets, they are artworks. “We have a couple of quilt and textile artists coming up as well. “Just to give you an idea of the different types of things.” Starting life as the Kyabram Mechanics’ Hall before being renamed the Kyabram Town Hall in 1954, the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery has been operating in the space since 2014. “The building has some architectural merit and you will actually be surprised by the number of people who come to look at it,” Vicki said. “Part of our attraction is that we are in an old building with a number of different spaces, with different feels. “There are some architectural elements of the building that are very attractive.” Located in the middle of the main street at 199–209 Allan St, Kyabram, the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment (Vietnam) gathers in Tongala for the annual Remembrance Day on October 24 each year.
REMEMBERING THE FALLEN The Light Horse Memorial is a commanding tribute, on the corner of Henderson Rd and Mangan St, Tongala. Follow the sand coloured pathway to the War Memorial for Cavalry (Vietnam). The footprints on the pathway represent a Light Horseman, symbolising the journey over the years from the former Light Horse, leaving the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East to arrive in the modern day of mechanised Cavalry. 3rd Cavalry Regiment honorary life member Michael Thompson built the Australian Light Horse Memorial in Tongala. “The Light Horse Memorial was built in 2003 and then the national avenue of honour to the armoured corps, Vietnam, which is a national memorial that cannot be built anywhere else in Australia,” Michael said. “That is our link, because the light horseman, the horse, the equipment used in battle, we ride into battle. “With the Centurion Tank or the APC in the park, that is our modern day horse.” Each year on October 24, the community gathers to honour the fallen, for the annual Remembrance Day for 3rd Cavalry Regiment (Vietnam). 36 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
At the 2023 Remembrance Day, a mural was unveiled acknowledging the 3rd Cavalry Regiment (Vietnam), reflecting the humid conditions servicemen fought in, with a rain feature down one side of the painting. In 2024 the memorial will be expanded to include a cenotaph. “It is all about remembering the ones we lost and not just in the Vietnam war, but we go through all the conflicts right back to the Light Horse,” Michael said. “It is a proud transition that if you belong to a regiment, that you always remember the fallen.”

DIG INTO DELICIOUS FOOD With so much choice on the menu, Kyabram has something for everyone’s dining tastes. Many Australian classics are celebrated around town with a parma with chips and salad or if you prefer chips and vegies available at a multitude of family friendly all age venues. If a parma isn’t your thing, menus serve everything from kiddies and seniors specials to melt in your mouth, cooked anyway you like it steaks. If coffee is your drink of choice, along the main drag, as well as hidden on the backstreets and when you visit the fauna, you will find numerous cafés that serve the best cup of Joe in town, many with a handmade tasty treat to nibble on alongside. The range of handmade in-house baked cakes, sponges, torts, muffins, biscuits and pastry on offer is second to none, matching any hall committee bake-off, by a country mile.
Many of the cafés and food stores do takehome meals for you to pick up and have a home-cooked meal, at home, that you didn’t cook yourself. If a trip around the world for a feast is what you are after, then there is Thai, sushi, pizza and pasta, fish and chips and a memory from high school fancy nights out, Chinese cuisine. Allan St closes for Tastes and Tunes Festival celebration of food and music has been enormous. Carmen Nicholson, a Kyabram Committee’s Development organising committee member, said the goal of the festival was to put “Kyabram on show’’ and every component of the event had a “local flavour’’.
The licensed festival, which is a free community event, will run from 5.30pm until 10.30pm, with a live music stage located at the eastern end of the street outside Hurley’s Hotel. There will be 500 seats and 50 picnic tables scattered along the street, with food and drink
vendors intermittently scattered from Church St to Albion St. There is also children’s entertainment on offer at the festival. Organisers are hopeful that Kyabram businesses in Allan St will decide to extend their opening hours to take advantage of what they believe will be
a resounding response to the event. On pages five and nine of today’s Free Press are full details of what is happening when, along with the faces behind the event, a which organisers plan to make regular component of Kyabram’s entertainment calendar.

JUST DOWN THE ROAD:
Girgarre
Girgarre is a must-do-stop for community music lovers that puts artistic practice at the centre of the community’s life. The town is literally creating an audible and lasting identity for the community and the people who live there. Flourishing with the annual Moosic Muster, Jigarre Jammin’, the monthly produce and craft market, as well as the Gargarro Botanic Gardens. 62 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
More than 20 years ago, the Girgarre Development Group Inc started a produce and craft market growing it from six stalls to upwards of 150 stalls on the second Sunday of each month. Girgarre Development Group Inc secretary Jan Smith wanted music at the market from the start, which in turn grew into the Moosic Muster and Jigarre Jammin’. “It was just one little idea that a person I had known over the years had,” Jan said.
“I got him to get some music for the first market and that is how the Moosic Muster grew. “I asked them all back 12 months later, just for them to see what they helped to create as the market had blossomed. “Then that night they said ‘we ought to have a music festival here’.” So began Moosic Muster. “It is an interactive experience for people who want to listen, want to learn, want to play, want to join in, want to sing, want to tap their foot,” Jan said. “People come in, they can camp or they can stay off site. “The Saturday of the muster is taken over by workshops all across the town, from ukulele to jazz experiences from Australasian experiences to clogging in the hall. >> Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024 63

Stanhope Monster Garage Sale Market and Car Boot Sale Snag a bargain or say goodbye to some wellloved household items at this monster sale held on the second Sunday of the month. “We are adding to the variety of stalls with a car boot sale where people can sell from their car boot and minimise handling of the goods and books involved,” Stanhope & District Development Committee member Christine Dicketts said. “We started it years ago to promote Stanhope, and I think we have. We do get quite a crowd coming through each month,” Christine said. Excess funds generated from the market go to the emergency fund set up to support members of the community who have undergone trauma and need help. The emergency fund has been running for as long as the market, and according to
Christine, has helped quite a few families in that time. There is live music each month at the market, a barbecue and the local cafe is open for takeaway, roast meals and coffee, along with a town favourite, the op shop and the local supermarket. Shaque-A-Taque in the main street has unique handcrafted woodwork and Australian décor, featuring some good old Aussie humour and locally hand-made gifts and novelties.
Montevideo Maru Mural In the centre of town adjacent to McEwen Place and the war memorial is a stunning mural painted by Tim Bowtell in 2022. It is a tribute to honour those who made the brave and patriotic decision in 1940 to voluntarily enlist, serving in the 2/22 Battalion of the Australian Army, known as Lark Force. On July 1, 1942, 853 Australian POWs and 200 civilian POWs were lost when the Japanese merchant ship was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine, the USS Sturgeon. All perished, including three servicemen who enlisted from Stanhope. This tragedy remains the largest maritime disaster in Australian history. JUST DOWN THE ROAD:
Rushworth Retaining much of its history and original buildings, from the early 1850s, Rushworth is the ideal place to learn about the gold rush era. Wander the wide high street, reading the ‘Walk through time’ plaques on many of the buildings, to learn about what once was. Stop for a coffee or a spot of lunch at one of the many eateries, visit the Rushworth Museum or take a wander through the Ironbark forests on the edge of town.
Take part in the event by making an Easter bonnet, or dress up your dog to show off their cuteness at the dog show. The street parade of vintage and historical vehicles are from all eras and include steam, petrol, people or horse powered machines. All through the day many of the parade participants will be demonstrating heritage skills and the way life once was. The Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival is on Easter Saturday, March 30.
Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival
Rushworth Community Market
Being one of the most impressive main streets in rural Victoria, Rushworth has retained its original charm, which is why it is the ideal place to host a heritage festival. Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival hosts over 75 market stalls on the main street’s historic median strip.
Head down to the historic high street to enjoy a market with a mix of plants, fresh produce, crafts, giftware, food and wine each month. The market is held every third Saturday of the month from 8am to 1pm on the Rushworth Village Green, 25 High St, Rushworth.

Whroo Forest and Balaclava Mines You can find the former gold mining town, Whroo, in the heart of the hilly Rushworth State Forest. Laying 7 km south of Rushworth, this once thriving and vibrant mining town grew up around Balaclava Hill, after gold was discovered there.
Now a deserted ghost town, with all the buildings having been removed, you can still explore the open cut shaft of the Balaclava Mines. Wander through the surrounding forest of red ironbark, grey box and yellow gum, which come alive in the spring and autumn, after the rains, with a dazzling display of wild flowers.

Tongala has been painted by the whole community, to become one of the best townships of street art in the country. Winner of the best street art trail at the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards, Tongala is lined with murals that tell the history and past culture of the town. “The street art in Tongala is a Lions Club project that has been going for something like, 20 years now,” artist and long-time Lions Club member Murray Ross said. “Originally, we got some money from the Bicentennial to paint, probably eight murals. “About three years ago we started street art with students that I had taught and since then, it has all been voluntary, we have painted another 30 murals around town. “So in town there are about 50 murals.” With the street art scattered around town, not just on the main street, you will need a full day to see it all. “It would probably take you at least a couple of hours to go right around all the murals,” Murray said. “You would need to drive to some, because they are around the town, not all down the main street. “One of the murals is about the Dunny festival we had years ago, so dunnies are a bit of a tradition and in all the paintings there is a little dunny, it’s like a signature thing, something for the children and adults alike to look for in each picture.” Murray and other volunteer artists recently completed work on a town square project to 74 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
turn a vacant block into something special for children and adults alike, as well as mark the 50th anniversary of the Tongala Lions Club. Street art is not the only reason to go to Tongala. Situated on the corner of Henderson Rd and Mangan St, as you enter the town, you will find the Tongala Light Horse Memorial. Follow the sand coloured path way, painted with footprints to represent a Light Horseman’s journey over the years from the former Light Horse leaving the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, to arrive at the modern day era of the mechanised cavalry. The path leads to the War Memorial for Cavalry (Vietnam) where you can pay your respect to the Armoured Corp servicemen who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. A mural was added to the Tongala RSL, to reflect the humidity and conditions the soldiers fought under. Other highlights in Tongala throughout the year include the annual town wide garage sale, that brings people in from far and wide for a bargain, and the annual Eats and Beats family festival. During the Christmas and summer months the town has a hay bale trail, where 20 different hay bale installations are displayed throughout the town, which has been expanded to include a town wide Christmas lights display. KYABRAM BOMBERS
season review It was a year of significant progress made by the Kyabram Football Netball Club. The Bombers’ seniors enjoyed an impressive season under coach Paul Newman, reaching the GVL grand final. Kyabram finished third at the end of the home-and-away season with an impressive 78 Kyabram and District Tourist Guide 2023–2024
15-3 win-loss record, behind only Echuca (17-1) and Seymour (16-2). But the Bombers elevated to another level in September to charge into the decider. Kyabram defeated Mansfield by 16 points in the elimination final at Mooroopna on September 2. That set up a date with Echuca in week two of the finals.
Kyabram’s Kaine Herbert had an outstanding year for the Bombers finishing runner-up in Morrison Medal.
The Bombers had 28 scoring shots to 24, but it was Echuca winning the second semifinal 15.9 (99) to 11.17 (83). Kyabram faced Euroa in a tight, tense preliminary final, overcoming a half-time deficit in a 13.12 (90) to 10.17 (77) success. A second crack at the all-conquering Echuca in the grand final was the prize for that success.
On a glorious day for football at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve, Kyabram led at the main break by eight points. But as legendary Kyabram sports journalist Gus Underwood described it — “It took only 11 minutes for Echuca to shatter Kyabram’s hopes of another Goulburn Valley League premiership at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton on Sunday.” In the end, Echuca 15.13 (103) defeated Kyabram 9.13 (67). On the individual front, star midfielder Kaine Herbert finished runner-up in the Morrison Medal to Seymour’s Jack O’Sullivan. Kyle Mueller (51 goals) finished third in the league goalkicking charts behind Jackson Trengove (Mooroopna) and Jett Trotter (Euroa). Newman, who will step down at the helm of the Bombers, called on the club’s talented list to regroup and dust themselves off for another tilt at silverware in 2024. Although the multiple premiershipwinning coach won’t be there to see his charges chase glory next season, he hoped the youngsters would stick fat and go again. “This is an important part of growth in young footballers,” he said. “They have got to understand what it’s like to lose in order to know what it takes to get back there and win.” Kyabram’s reserves finished the regular season in second spot (16-2), but bowed out of the premiership race with a 15-point preliminary final loss to Shepparton United. The Bombers’ thirds ended the homeand-away point of the season in fourth (13-5), although its season came to an end in week two of the finals. Over at the courts, Kyabram’s A-grade netballers placed 10th with three wins for the season. The B-Reserve, Under-17 and Under-15 sides all qualified for the finals series. B-Reserve and the Under-15s lost their respective elimination finals. The Under-17 team won their elimination final against Echuca (49–35) before a 51–44 defeat to Mooroopna in the first semi-final.
