ROSS & HEATHER GANGE

When we decided to develop part of our property (The Lemon Tree Stud), where we have lived for 43 years, we quickly realised undertaking a residential development was going to be daunting and certainly overwhelming. Due to those negatives, we came to the conclusion we were out of our depth and needed assistance, so we approached Development Edge’s Peter Mintern and Michael Lewis to undertake the subdivision totally themselves.

They were in the process of developing Seven Creeks Estate which adjoined our property. With their extensive expertise, networks, knowledge and experience we were able to structure a contract of

sale that resulted in the development of our land.

From our first meeting with Peter and Michael we both felt instantly comfortable with them undertaking this project. We were impressed with their open communication, attention to detail and professionalism.

When Development Edge became involved, the project was expedited and all the blocks sold extremely quickly. They took care of everything.

We couldn’t be happier as we would not have achieved the final positive outcome ourselves. We are extremely proud of the finished product, Sevens View in the Seven Creek Estate.

SEBASTIAN AND CONNIE MANGIAMELI HAVE CREATED A TOTALLY STUNNING HOME WITH BEAUTIFUL FEATURES INSIDE AND OUT –RIGHT IN THE HEART OF SHEPPARTON.

Our Home Autumn 2023 12

FROM THE ASHES, A PHOENIX ROSE.

It’s feathers preened, the remnants of a smoky demise long forgotten, as standing in its place lies a true gem.

Polishing a restored diamond following a fire which occurred long before their tenancy, Sebastian and Connie Mangiameli’s Corio St renovation has come in inspired notions of innovation.

The Mangiamelis moved into their property eight and a half years ago, and bit by bit, piece by piece, have stamped their own brand on the property by going minimal in the demolition department, but major in the style category.

Inside, a neutral grey/white colour palette paired with lashings of warmth allowed by natural and artificial light has created the ultimate homely aura.

The spacious four-bedroom residence has several attractive assets, one of which being the music room which features gorgeous chandeliers hanging over the room’s centrepiece, an Alex Steinbach baby grand piano.

Outside, the front garden provides a pop of colour created by an array of perennials, while the back garden’s perfectly manicured hedges and pool area makes it the perfect summer playground.

Our Home Autumn 2023 13

In essence, Sebastian and Connie have created the ‘unassuming neighbour’ of the street.

Modest from the outside but magnificent at it’s heart, it’s precisely the character of home Sebastian envisioned after ditching the hustle and bustle of his former Maude St digs.

“It’s probably a bit of a hidden gem really, because a lot of people say to us they didn’t realise what was beyond the gate after driving past a million times, and you wouldn’t know,” he said.

“I suppose that was probably part of the appeal for me, because we always had such busy lives and were always in the midst of the public.

“We grew up in the (dining) industry, and so we either lived on premises or close by. Having such a low-key presence as you’re walking past actually

suited me right down to the ground — I really like that.

“Everything was already here really, it was just about putting our personal take on things.”

However, while the couple didn’t emulate Van Gogh and lose limbs over a blank canvas, there were a couple of non-negotiables when it came to renovation.

“When we were looking, I said there are only two things I need — a pantry and a guest bedroom just to have that extra space,” Connie said.

“I’ve just put a butler’s pantry in and done all the outside of it to help it flow better.

“It was fun making that flow from there, because I didn’t want to make it look like a hole in the wall.”

Connie’s Italian roots means catering for big

Our Home Autumn 2023 14

numbers when family is about, so there’s no surprises when hearing her favourite aspect of the home is where she’s most in her element.

And while Sebastian cherishes the music room the most, he admits he’s spent more time exercising his green thumb than his piano keys.

“The garden is probably where I spend a million hours, and lots of time and effort,” Sebastian said.

“When we got here the garden had a lot of natives and things, whereas I wanted to give it more of a tailored, English sort of look with the hedges – make it much more of a formal garden.

“I think we both enjoy being out there, it’s beautiful when the weather is nice to be sitting out back and enjoying it all.”

Moving into their Corio St home has served as the next chapter of the Mangiameli’s journey.

The couple have described the renovation as a labour of love, and it just so happens the love affair — the final footnotes of the chapter — has a few twists left yet.

“We’ve got to add a library in the music room, put in an outdoor kitchen, and there will be a pergola going in,“ Sebastian said.

“I said to Connie that I’ve got four more years to retire, so anything that’s left has to be done by then otherwise that’s it.”

Colours create earthy vibe

EARTHY TONES AND WARM NEUTRALS HAVE BEEN PREDICTED FOR THE COOLER SEASONS.

WE ARE AT THAT time of year once again where we tend to gravitate indoors as the days get shorter and the evenings turn crisp, and we want our homes to feel cosy and inviting.

Painting a room in your home can really change the perception of not only the size but the overall feel, and Dulux has predicted a colour forecast of warm neutrals and muted yellow-greens for the cooler seasons this year.

Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucene-Orr said this year’s Dulux Connect palette is filled with beautiful earth-based neutrals that are so easy to live in and decorate with.

“They speak to our growing passion for craftsmanship, sustainability and living more simply, and create the relaxed and cocooning feeling we crave from our home in the autumn months,” Andrea said.

“They are also extremely versatile and work with a variety of architectural styles, adding warmth and colour to contemporary interiors or enhancing the character of period homes.”

The cooler months offer an opportunity to relax with the ones we love and take a front row seat to the beauty of the changing seasons outside.

Also a fabulous opportunity to get the paint brush out and create a calm earthy vibe that’s perfect for laid-back entertaining.

UNAFRAID TO WRITE THEIR OWN DESIGN RULES, BRUCE AND DEB LYNCH BUILT AN ENVIRONMENTAL OASIS IN THE RURAL TOWN OF MOOROOPNA.

Our Home Autumn 2023 19
STORY: TAYLAH BAKER PHOTOGRAPHY: MEGAN FISHER
Our Home Autumn 2023 20

THERE ARE VERY few residences that possess the innate ability to transport one from house to home.

Bruce and Deb Lynch have done just that in the most unlikely of places.

In an ordinary street, an atypical abode stands, setting nostalgia alight with salvaged materials and op-shop finds.

Its outside steeped with bricks made from sawdust and cement, while inside lies streamlined walls that light leads its dance across and warmth follows.

Our Home Autumn 2023 21

Four years ago when building ceased, the couple moved into their small but spacious two-bedroom, one-bathroom home.

From entrance — a recycled timber table-turneddoor from Envisage Furniture, to exit — a backyard of native blooms and crunchy recycled gravel, each design piece is alive with character and stories of the past.

Recycled timbers and red gum accents on the kitchen bench and bathroom vanity are now not only a part of the home, but were once a part of the community.

“The window frame was made from timber that was in one of the original coolstores in Ardmona Fruitworks,” Bruce said.

“And I made the dining table — that was from floorboards from the Katandra West Hall.”

Whimsy is not lost on these two, confirmed by a slew of Wonka-like inventions.

For example, a contraption of cot-framing masking as a clothesline can descend from the ceiling.

“Building our home worked brilliantly between the two of us because I’m the creative and visual, and Bruce is technical,” Deb said.

Every inch of their home has been subconsciously but meticulously crafted to show it’s them.

Bruce steered the ship in regard to the practicalities of it all, while Deb managed to incorporate a piece of themselves into every room, evident in her hand-woven ‘rags-to-riches rug’ a burst of colour at the centre of the living area.

But no doubt it’s the alfresco area where they have enjoyed their best work.

A string of lights above an op-shopped table with direct access through to the kitchen — it’s an entertainer’s dream.

When not hosting visitors, Bruce and Deb enjoy breakfast outside overlooking the native flora.

Our Home Autumn 2023 22
Our Home Autumn 2023 23

With no lawn to mow, the only watering needed is refilling water dishes, providing ammunition for the firing flight of honeyeater birds.

From inside to out, the space feels effortless, albeit it was anything but.

The Lynch’s dedicated 18 months of non-stop research to check off two essentials — energy efficient and manageable.

“We bought all the magazines we could find, googled things, got lots and lots of information about building materials and technologies,” Deb said.

Studying thermal mass and the sun’s pathway, Bruce and Deb used each principle to their advantage featured throughout via the concrete floors, large north-facing windows, fanlights over door frames, and good ceiling and wall insulation.

“It’s really paid off – our power bills for the whole year are between $100-$200.”

The water tanks burrowed out of sight from the entertaining area has been a proud cherry on top to the couple’s environmental efforts.

“We collect water that we use on our washing machine and for flushing toilets.

“All summer, it’s watered our vegie garden just from what we’ve collected on our roof.”

Combining sustainability with personality, Bruce and Deb have created a home that is methodical, beautiful and unusual.

“You can fix things to make them more sustainable and more energy efficient, but really, if you’ve got the opportunity to build that gives you a whole open slather to do whatever you want,” Deb said.

“We had to buy a lot of new stuff to build this house, but we tried to avoid it to a point to keep it really sustainable.

“And remember, you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. Do what you want and build the house that suits you.”

Creative pedal to the metal

NESTLED AMONG A HILLY LANDSCAPE IN LONGWOOD EAST, AT THE TOP OF A VERY LARGE HILL, IS THE CREATIVE WORKSPACE OF A HUMBLE MASTERMIND.

NO PIECE CREATED in this innovative space is identical to another, showcasing raw authenticity over a broad range of spectrums.

Rowan Craven from Craven Made is proving that imagination and creativity can become reality with his unique approach to creative metal fabrication.

“I don’t think I am that arty, but if someone gives me an idea, I invest my time into it, and run with it,” Rowan said.

“Sometimes when I start something I get so involved, I find it hard to stop.”

With a total package approach to custom fabrication which includes consultancy, design liaison, manufacture and quality finishes, Rowan doesn’t just chase the big jobs.

“I hunt for smaller and creative projects too, and I’m constantly inspired by local artists,” he said.

“Steve Tobin from Heavy Metal Art, Tank from Tank Art and Pete King are my biggest influences.

“These guys are doing amazing things in our community.

“I don’t feel like I can put myself in the same category as them, their art needs to be celebrated.

“However, I feel extremely lucky to have worked alongside them, and even luckier to call them mates.”

Rowan, who was born and raised in the hills and often commutes to Shepparton and surrounding areas, said he had watched the engineering industry evolve over the past 35 years within the region.

Our Home Autumn 2023 27
Our Home Autumn 2023 28

“I owe a lot of my knowledge to the previous owners of Mooroopna Mobile Engineering, Peter and Dianne Dow, what they taught me was invaluable,” Rowan said.

“I was always doing a bit of everything, mastering a few trades really.

“I find these days more businesses just specialise in the one area.

“I get too bored if I do the same thing over and over every day.”

Some of Rowan’s work around the Shepparton region is admired daily by families who live within the Development Edge estates.

His creative mark has been left upon the many entrances into these areas.

The shipping container café that permanently resides out the front of the Lemon Tree Café, that was one of Rowan’s projects too.

From raised rustic garden beds to garden art and structural backyard sheds with a difference, to creative property signage and show stopping property entry gates, there is not too much Rowan doesn’t do.

It’s the job that doesn’t have plans, It’s the job that no-one else is interested in, it’s the job that takes him out of his comfort zone and sometimes it’s the job that is created on the run.

They’re the jobs that get him out of bed every day. From the weird and the wonderful to the stock standard. Do yourself a favour and look him up.

Shedding light on indoor style

ILLUMINATING YOUR HOME WITH INDOOR LAMPS IS A BRILLIANT WAY TO CREATE ATMOSPHERE.

AS THE SUN sets and darkness begins to fall, the right indoor lighting can transform your living space into a cosy haven.

Whether you prefer the warm glow of a table lamp or the subtle ambiance of a floor lamp, indoor lighting can create a unique atmosphere in every room of your home.

Here are some current lighting ideas provided by Lights Plus, Shepparton from the sought-after Eglo Lighting range.

Embrace cosy times

ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY INDOORS IN WINTER IS IT ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION, AND BRINGS TOGETHERNESS.

Our Home Autumn 2023 32
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY

WITH COLD TEMPERATURES and less daylight, winter can be a challenging time of the year.

However, it can be a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones indoors, and take some personal time to unwind and relax.

When the weather is cold and dreary, it can be easy to fall into a routine of watching TV or scrolling through social media, but by getting creative and doing activities together as a family, you can inspire each other and create something unique and special.

Puzzles are a perfect example of how a family or individual can spend hours and hours on end trying to complete the challenge that makes a puzzle, a puzzle.

Piece by piece you are creating something that could potentially be framed and hung in your home, but more importantly, you are creating conversations around a table that become memories.

There are so many ways to interact with your family in your home.

Try out some new recipes and cook together, gather some board games, and have a game night.

If you have little ones, building forts is very popular, arts and craft are usually a hit or try getting active with some indoor exercise.

If you’re wanting to do something creative for yourself, a photo album can be an enjoyable experience while you re-live and preserve beautiful memories.

Hitting the cupboards for a de clutter may not sound like fun, but could bring benefits to your mind and soul.

Spending time indoors in winter can relieve the pressures of the world.

It’s important to take time, relax and unwind and enjoy your own company and the company of the people you love.

Wallpaper power

WHILE WALLPAPER NEVER TRULY WENT OUT OF STYLE, THERE HAS BEEN A RESURGENCE IN ITS POPULARITY IN RECENT YEARS DUE TO HOMEOWNERS LOOKING FOR FRESH WAYS TO ADD PERSONALITY TO THEIR HOMES.

FOR CENTURIES IT has been used as a way to add colour, texture, and pattern to interior spaces, so it’s no wonder still to this day that it continues to make a statement.

Our Home spoke with Paula Dohrman from Walls and Windows in Shepparton, who confirmed the product is undeniably back.

“Wallpaper is very much at the forefront of homes and a regular feature in design decisions,” Paula said.

“Painted feature walls are still popular, but wallpaper is being seen a lot within current wall trends.

“It’s never really gone away, but it’s again definitely big, and is being installed in all areas of a home.”

Installing wallpaper can be a DIY project, but it’s

important to prepare the walls properly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

“Generally, the walls should be clean, smooth, and dry before applying wallpaper paste or adhesive,” Paula said.

“It’s also important to measure and cut the wallpaper accurately, taking into account any pattern repeats or matching.

“Murals and textured wallpapers can be a little more complex, so it may be best to hire a professional.”

From one wall to an entire room, that’s a lot of blank canvas, so why not elevate the space with wallpaper.

Coffee table books expand horizons

COFFEE TABLE BOOKS ARE PIECES OF LITERARY ART THAT CAN TRANSPORT US THROUGH HISTORY, CULTURE, WHIMSICAL DESTINATIONS AND BEYOND.

WITH THE THEME of a book being anything intriguing enough to be published.

When it comes to what’s best for your coffee table ,that decision is entirely up to you.

It’s about celebrating your favourite form of art through illustrations, sketches, photographs, paintings and etchings.

However, coffee table books can also tell your family stories and can create time capsules of what matters most.

The first thing a successful coffee table book needs is to be eye-catching.

It’s a book after all, it is meant to be on display.

Whether to inspire you of an evening as you lay down on the couch and flick over things you’re interested in, or is placed purely for presentation and other eyes, either way, even the most minimalistic of living rooms will feel incomplete without one stunning coffee table book.

Books are more than décor, they inspire conversation, creativity and help pass the time. Grow your collection, decorate and make your coffee table shine.

Windows to impress

FOR A COUPLE THAT NEVER HAD AN INTEREST IN INTERIOR DESIGN, ROBERT AND MINHEE KANI REALISED PRETTY EARLY THAT CURTAINS WERE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS ARTWORK AND COULD ADD A UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENT TO THEIR HOME.

Our Home Autumn 2023 41

“THEY CAN COMPLETELY change a room,” Robert said.

“Minhee was always thinking white for everything, white walls, white kitchen, and white curtains.

“I was always searching for unique and bold ways to be different.”

Their charming space that is both open with flow and stunning natural light, provided them the opportunity to really make a statement.

Growing in view, from the open windows which overlook a relaxing and warm entertaining area, are a row of privacy trees. Before too long they would be tall enough to block their neighbours out of sight.

“We love looking outside, it’s another part of our home we enjoy being in, so we didn’t want to block it out with blinds,” Minhee said.

“That’s the reason why we went with sheer blinds.

“Robert convinced me to go bright rather than white, and we are both so glad we did.”

Robert and Minhee went to Wyndham Décor in Kialla with a clear vision in mind. Sheer curtains to match their kitchen feature splash back, with a

matte metal track to complement the other design elements that were growing in their home around them.

The curtain track was made to fit and bends around the windows for a more natural flow.

The colour was matched, and the sheer material was made with a wave fold which creates an instant sense of luxury.

The couple, who moved to Shepparton in 2020 to be closer to family while raising their son Kyden, have implemented some stunning finishes in their home.

Smart technology is something Robert is passionate about, so not only do they have statement curtains, Siri can also open and close them.

Bringing fashion to your windows can come in a number of different ways. There will always be different designs and fabrics that showcase a mixture of textured linen to bold and beautiful prints.

Trends are forever changing, be bold and make a statement in your home, and dress those windows to impress.

Teens keen to change it up

GEMMA LINDSAY DID WORK EXPERIENCE WITH THE OUR HOME FEATURES TEAM RECENTLY AND WROTE THIS LOVELY PIECE ON TEEN BEDROOM STYLES.

TEENAGE BEDROOM styles are always changing.

It seems as if no time has passed when hot pink walls, zebra print, and posters of famous boy bands were replaced with fake vines, vinyl records stuck onto the wall, and tapestries.

These changes have happened in the blink of an eye, and I feel that this era of teen bedrooms has changed for the better.

There is a broader range when it comes to bedroom aesthetics now and you can put a name to a specific style, making it a lot easier for teens to find what suits them best.

Even though some design choices can be vastly different, the two main trends I have noticed are decorative lights and plant décor.

Both can complement each other and work beautifully in an overall space.

This warm, earthy and cosy look contains pot plants that can be perfect on a shelf or windowsill, along with warm-toned fairy lights hung on the wall or window.

Being a teenager, I know very well how often we try to avoid using the ceiling light as it can ruin the look of the space, so fairy lights are perfect.

An individual’s personality is as unique as the person itself.

Teen bedrooms are becoming more stylish than ever before, find your creative soul and express it within your walls.

Tank’s mark

A QUARTER OF A CENTURY ON, THE SIGNATURE STYLE THAT IS TANK FROM TANK ART, CONTINUES TO MOVE THE MINDS OF MANY.

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY
Our Home Autumn 2023 47

IMAGINE WALKING into your home after a long day at work, to be greeted by a painting that fills you with joy, and wonder.

The vibrant colours and intricate details transport you to another place, the idea of what’s happening evokes emotions you never knew you had, and the secret message you find hidden within the piece, inspires you to see the world in a different light.

Imagine no further, meet multi-talented Shepparton artist Tank, who creates art for homes that does just that.

His unique techniques, combined elements of composition and individual brush stroke styles are the equivalent to that of a signature.

“It’s like a musician finding their own voice, it becomes their signature,” Tank said.

“It’s kind of similar, I have my own style and I can’t get away from it.

“It’s within me, and a part of me, and it’s now obvious in my work.”

Our Home Autumn 2023 48

Tank’s signature is truly awe-inspiring and nothing short of spectacular.

The light within the studio he paints feels warm, your eyes are instantly drawn to the colour and imagination that lays upon canvas after canvas, and his genuine down-to-earth personality is calming.

Inspired by his artistic mother and love of storytelling that is portrayed in music, Tank said the realisation he wanted to paint and create art, came at a young age.

“My mother was always creative and painting, and entering local art shows,” he said.

“Without a doubt she was my youngest source of inspiration.

“I am inspired by music and all forms of art though, especially if they carry a message.

“Allowing people to come up with their own ideas of what’s being portrayed is important, it ignites feelings and emotions, and for that reason alone, my descriptions and titles can be ambiguous.”

His love of animals can be found portraying human emotion and his intriguing and quirky mind met with a drive to produce something that cannot be seen with the naked eye, or snapped up by the latest model camera, are evident within his work.

His eye-catching murals can be found on buildings and walls all over Shepparton, along with the life-size art cows that he has been painting his whole career.

Tank certainly has stamped his mark around the region, but it’s with brush and paint in the comfort of his own wondrous space, that his love for canvas, creativity and soul reaching, mind moving art is born.

Tank’s pieces are available for purchase through his website www.tankart.com.au or at McKellars Picture Framing in Shepparton.

Canvas prints come in two sizes, large (800 x 600 mm) for $425 and medium (300 x 400 mm) for $275, they’re made in Melbourne and are ready to hang.

EVERYBODY LOVES TO CUDDLE UP IN THE COOL WEATHER, AND SOME RETAILERS HAVE JUST THE RIGHT PRODUCTS TO CREATE A WARM FEELING IN YOUR HOME. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FROM THE TEAM AT OUR HOME, TO YOUR HOME.

PILLOW TALK

There is no feeling better than walking through the pillow section of a home décor shop and finding the perfect cushion for your living room. Not only do they provide comfort and warmth, they add style to your room.

Which is why it’s a tough decision, as you must find a good one; soft, fluffy, cuddly and most importantly, comfortable.

The decision may be hard but the pay off is more than worth it, there is no bond stronger than a homebody and their favourite pillow.

EVERYBODY LOVES A THROW

When you want to cosy up on the couch, what’s the first thing you reach for? Your favourite blanket, of course.

Winter is the best time of year for snuggling down with a blanket and a good book or TV show, or sharing a blanket with a loved one for added warmth. We recommend finding blankets or throws you love the feel of — are you a fluffy, fleecy or knitted kind of person?

IT’S COMMON SCENTS

Candles are a winter staple, and for good reason. They smell nice, they warm up your space and they look gorgeous, especially when paired with a candle holder.

They’re for everyone, coming in a range of colours, scents, sizes and burn times. so explore what’s out there and love what you find, or you’ll never know what scents make sense.

Choosing a candle will be the hardest decision, as once you have one, you can light it up for any occasion. Dinner with guests? Date night? No power? The uses are innumerable.

FRESH AS A DAISY

The cold weather can make rooms feel empty and unwelcoming, which is why we recommend plants and vases to keep your room feeling full and inviting.

Natives, such as wattle, waratah flowers and gum leaves are always a hit with guests, as they connect us to the land we live on and the beauty around us.

Once you’ve found your flower, vases will be at the front of your mind. The possibilities are endless, tall, wide, intricate, simple, glass, clay, ceramic, which vase style will you fall in love with?

1. Protea mix brown glass vase and flowers, $500, Walls and Windows. 2 Elume 40-hour sandalwood candle $15.30, and Wood candle holder $24, Sabac on High. 3. Alpine 130cm x 150cm handmade mustard throw $90, Walls and Windows. 4. Ivory patterned austin cushion $70, Walls and Windows.

5. Decorative wattle $15.50, and White ceramic vase $55, Sabac on High.

THE SILVER LINING!

There’s no doubt that the current economic outlook is a little gloomy, but there is a silver lining. Building costs in the past few years have skyrocketed to all-time new levels across the Goulburn Valley. The high costs are driven by an overwhelming backlog of building contracts throughout the region, with most builders having 12 months of work ahead of them to catch up. Notwithstanding this, the future for block investment and residential building looks bright. The COVID-19 block boom is now largely over, the boom that was driven by the high cost of living, that saw seeing inflation and interest rates rise rapidly, and resulted in spiking block prices. Block prices are beginning to stabilise, with many re-sale lots coming back on the market – giving buyers

greater choice and the opportunity to negotiate a fair price, helping to offset the rise in building costs. The next 12 months should give those wanting to build more opportunity to negotiate price with builders.

Those looking to build in the next couple of years should take the opportunity to secure a block now as there will be a lack of new development estates and land available over the next few years. It’s also important to keep in mind that developers have paid today’s market price for Englobo (undeveloped) land to develop, and the high cost of developing estates will make it difficult to sell blocks in the future for less than an average of $300,000, depending on size and location.

Wood heaters warrant

WHETHER IT’S returning an old house to its former glory or recreating every aspect of a home other than its shell, the process can be incredibly rewarding.

Dylan and Sally Burls put their work boots into action two years ago when they purchased their forever home on 0.8 hectares in Tatura.

FOR SOME PEOPLE, RENOVATING CAN BE A WONDROUS OPPORTUNITY TO DREAM BIG AND AWAKEN THE CREATIVE SOUL.
Our Home Autumn 2023 61

A renovating challenge that has had its ups and downs, but together and from the help of some talented trades, Dylan and Sally are creating their dream home to raise their young family.

After spending their first summer in the home it was time to talk heating.

The pair agreed that to suit what was becoming a ranch-styled homestead and to re-create some of their own fond childhood memories, the decision was easy, they needed a wood heater.

“As a child some of my favourite memories were by the indoor fire, drying off after a shower and warming up right before bed.” Sally said.

Dylan, who is also a builder, said they knew what they were looking for and wanted to support a local business.

“I’m a massive supporter of shopping local,” Dylan said.

“Our whole renovation to date has been done with local trades and local businesses.

“Through word of mouth, I heard about the range at Barbecues Galore and once we saw their showroom which consisted of nearly 40 working and static displays, we knew we were in the right place.”

Dylan and Sally chose a Eureka Amber – Radiant wood heater, which is a durable Australian construction.

This radiant-style heater was perfect for their open plan home design, enabling them to heat a large area without the need of a fan.

Wood fires seem to be making a small comeback due to the concerns over gas running costs and Dylan said having family and friends who live on farms, was definitely an advantage when collecting wood.

But Dylan also had another advantage up his sleeve. A talented friend who is crafted in the time honoured tradition of stone masonry.

Before the heater could be installed, they needed to consider the feature wall which fell directly behind it.

Keeping in mind their eager objective of creating a warm space, this is where friend Jason Webb from Webb Stone Work, sprang into action and created

them a stone feature wall that pops just as much a piece of wood burning on a fire.

“Watching Jason do this piece for us, I was in awe,” Dylan said.

“There is just something about watching a good tradesman perfecting their work, this was art.

“Once the wall was finished, Barbecues Galore installed the wood heater and now I stare at it like it’s a TV.

“It’s a talking point within our home and we even look at it in summer.”

From modern to rustic, to in-built or free-standing, from wood fired to gas log heaters — there is a perfect indoor heater just waiting to become a part of your home.

Embrace the comfort and style and all the warm welcomes it may bring.

Warm couture for cooler days

STEPPING OUTSIDE should be an easy task.

But when you’re met with a breeze as strong as it is chilling, your body welcoming the cold with a tensing of muscles and seizing of bones, it’s easy to run straight back inside.

Nothing wrong with that. After all, ’tis the season.

Yes, get ready for a low-hanging Game of Thrones reference, because, “Winter is coming”.

The time has come to bid adieu to the uncomfortable confines of regular clothing and welcome the cosiest, comfiest threads.

From your head to your toes, here are the essentials that will warm your body and your soul:

THAWED, THERMAL AND THRIVING

It’s the basic building blocks of a cold day. Trapping what body heat it can, thermals are your number one provider of warmth without all the bulkiness.

From the bottoms to the tops, choose from wool or thermal tights, cotton bodysuits or camis, and prepare to feel the equivalent of a warm hug.

SOCK ‘N’ SOLE

Like bread and butter, the yin to one’s yang, socks

and slippers make the perfect pair (pun unintended).

This one’s a no-brainer, but a fashionable dilemma with the amount of styles and materials out there — spots or stripes, ankle or crew, cotton or wool. Cut footloose in footwear that makes a statement with every step you take.

FALLING A-SLEEPWEAR

The teeth-chattering turnover has us reaching for sleepwear with a few extra centimetres of length. Two-piece sets are cult classics and mix-and-match separates don’t shy away from popularity either.

Whatever your choosing, the market has both chic and practical PJs, so it’s not so mortifying to be caught out the front yard on a Sunday morning with your chatty-parrot neighbours.

DRESS TO IMPRESS?

Often overlooked, the dressing gown has been a wardrobe staple and a token of luxury since the 18th century.

Assimilating Hugh Hefner, you’ll be warmer than cold, hard cash while feeling like a million bucks swaggering around the house in one of these bad boys. Pipe optional.

YOUR SUMMER WARDROBE BETTER WATCH ITS BACK BECAUSE THESE TEMPERATURE-TURNING TAILORINGS HAVE YOU COVERED. LITERALLY.

Add one tablespoon of lemon juice and two tablespoons of honey to a cup of hot water. Stir until combined and add an ice cube to cool it down.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the soothing nature of this tea.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon, along with being tasty, is said to help with body temperature and metabolism, so utilise its power this winter.

Similar to ginger, it can be used in cooking, baking and drinks.

Enjoy a cinnamon garnish to a warm cup of coffee, add it to your morning smoothie or sprinkle it on one of your desserts.

Our Home Autumn 2023 65

MULLED WINE

Keeping warm and drinking wine, what more could you ask for? Mulled wine is a winter tradition that’s been around since the Roman Empire and it’s so easy you can make it at home.

Ingredients:

1 750ml bottle red wine

1 orange, sliced into rounds

6 whole cloves

3 cinnamon sticks

3 star anise

¼ cup of honey

½ cup of brandy (optional)

Method:

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine all ingredients. Bring to a simmer not a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer gently over low heat for 10 minutes.

Serve warm and garnish with more citrus slices and cinnamon sticks.

LAVENDER

Sleeping through the cold nights of winter can be a struggle, but the smell of lavender is rumoured to help.

Lavender scent can come from a wide variety of sources such as oils, candles, incense and diffusers

The scent is calming, pleasant and common, making it the perfect remedy to achieving a good sleep.

Our Home Autumn 2023 70

AT THE BACK of a long and inviting house block near the winding Goulburn River, lays what once was a barn filled with horses.

The sheets of original iron now weathered still stand strong.

As you slide the faded wooden entrance door open you enter an oasis, a man cave watering hole filled with almost everything you need other than a bed, however, there is a couch if you need a nap.

The warmth from the fireplace is felt upon entry, a much needed feeling in cooler months.

The ambience it provides, just as important.

Propped closely to the fireplace is a long, comfy and very inviting couch that directly looks towards one extremely huge TV.

The footy is on and the atmosphere is set. Friends gather for drinks; kids gather for games. The fun has begun.

The timber bar is both beautiful and bold, a standout feature for sure.

Quirky stools meet its edge.

After taking a seat your eyes are instantly drawn to the walls, which are filled with memorabilia and pre-loved signs, no matter which way you look.

Kids are laughing and adults are cheering, everyone is getting loud, then you see a pool table a dart board and a table tennis set up, and now you understand.

Outside there is an enclosed toilet, beside an incredible view.

Vacant land for as far as your eye can see, and where the sun sets too.

A wonderful space used by all, not just for the man.

A family oasis cave, but I am not sure that was the plan.

A source of inspiration, to create a space away from the home.

One that ignites creativity and togetherness, in a place you’ll never feel alone.

Time to tune-up finances

WINTER IS A SEASON OF CHANGE AND ALSO A GREAT TIME TO REASSESS OUR FINANCES AND MAKE SURE WE’RE ON TRACK FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR.

HERE ARE SOME tips on how to take advantage of the winter months to streamline your bills and expenses.

ANALYSE YOUR MONTHLY EXPENSES

Take a look at your bank statements and see where your money is going each month. Are there any services you’re paying for that you’re not using? Do you really need that extra data plan?

Winter is the perfect time to cut back on unnecessary expenses and redirect that money toward savings or other financial goals.

RE-EVALUATE YOUR MORTGAGE

With interest rates fluctuating, it’s worth considering whether refinancing your mortgage could save you money in the long run.

Talk to a financial advisor or mortgage broker to see if you’re eligible for a lower rate, and weigh the costs and benefits of refinancing.

CONSIDER SWITCHING TO A STREAMING SERVICE

Cable TV can be expensive, and with so many streaming services now available, it’s easier than ever to cut the cord and still enjoy your favourite shows and movies.

Take some time this winter to research the different streaming options and find one that fits your budget and viewing preferences.

MAKE A BUDGET

A budget is a great way to keep track of your expenses and make sure you’re staying on track with your financial goals.

LOOK FOR WAYS TO SAVE

Winter can be an expensive time of year, with heating bills alone. Look for ways to save money wherever you can, whether that means cooking at home more often, shopping sales, or cutting back on non-essential purchases.

Every little bit helps when it comes to staying on top of your finances.

By taking the time to reassess your bills and mortgages, streaming services, and other expenses this winter, you can set yourself up for financial success in the year ahead.

With a little bit of effort and some smart planning, you can make sure you’re on track to achieve your goals and live the life you want to live.

Secure your legacy, it’s easy

ESTATE PLANNING AND CONVEYANCING WITH LUSH LEGAL.

CONVEYANCING

Buying or selling a property can be a huge decision for anyone with lots of things to consider and even organise.

It’s completely natural to feel a bit apprehensive about the legal process especially when it seems like there is so much to consider.

But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Sure, there are some legal requirements to meet and paperwork to fill out, but that’s all part of the process.

And the good news is, there are professionals who are trained to handle all of it for you.

By working with a trusted solicitor or conveyancer, you can relax and know that everything will be taken care of. They’ll ensure that your interests are protected, that all the necessary checks are completed, and the transaction is completed smoothly.

So, don’t let the idea of conveyancing intimidate you. It’s just another step in achieving your property goals, and with the right support, it can be a breeze.

ESTATE PLANNING

Have you been thinking about updating your estate plan, but feeling a little apprehensive about the process?

That’s completely understandable — after all, it’s not something we tend to think about on a day-to-day basis.

It is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your loved ones though.

It gives you peace of mind knowing that your affairs are in order. And the good news is, it doesn’t have to be a scary or complicated process.

When you work with an experienced solicitor, they’ll guide you through the entire process step-by-step, in an easy-to-understand way.

They’ll recommend what should be included in your estate plan for example, making a will, updating your existing will, making a power of attorney, appointing a medical treatment decision maker — by providing you with tailored advice based on your personal circumstances.

In fact, many people find that updating their estate plan is actually a comforting and empowering experience.

It’s an opportunity to take control of your affairs and to make sure that your loved ones are taken care.

So if you’re considering updating your estate plan, don’t be scared — be encouraged. It’s an important and worthwhile step, and with the right support, it can be a simple and straightforward process.

Consider taste buds tempted

THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN COMING HOME TO THE SMELL OF A HEARTY POT OF SOUP STEAMING AWAY ON THE STOVE-TOP AFTER A LONG AND COLD DAY. KELLY CARMODY SHARES HER MUM CARMEL’S ZUCCHINI SOUP RECIPE

THE AROMA HITS your nose like a freight train, instantly you are hungry.

For as long as I can remember, my Mum has always enjoyed cooking soups.

Whether it be her mother’s special vegetable recipe or a creamy pumpkin that leaves your taste buds wanting more, soup in our home growing up was a delicious winter dish for all our family to enjoy.

Fast forward 20 or so years, add a large vegetable garden to the mix that produces enough vegetables to feed a small village, and my Mum, Carmel, is still cooking up a soup storm.

Here is her mouth-watering zucchini soup special, that is by far one of my favourites — Enjoy!

ZUCCHINI SOUP

Ingredients:

3 medium zucchinis

2 brown onions

2 tsp crushed garlic

1 tsp mixed herbs

1 flat tsp curry powder

6 bacon rashes

1 litre chicken stock

1 packet of chicken noodle soup mix

2 tbsp of butter

500ml of water

Method:

Finely dice onions and bacon. Wash zucchinis and dice into cubes.

In a large saucepan on medium heat cook the onions, bacon and zucchini with the 2 tablespoons of butter.

Recipes to warm your heart

WITH WINTER FAST APPROACHING, DJEMBE

ARCHIBALD WANTED TO SHARE SOME OF HER SPECIAL FAMILY RECIPES.

MY FAMILY IS from Scotland and if it’s known for one thing, it’s the cold, depressing winters.

However, my granny Clare has always been able to keep us warm and content with her curried parsnip soup.

Even now, when we fly the 24-hour journey to see her, we think of her soup and get excited remembering we’ll get to eat it soon.

I present to you my Granny’s curried parsnip soup, which she adapted from an old English recipe book.

CURRIED PARSNIP SOUP

Ingredients:

30g of butter

1 onion chopped

1 tsp of ground coriander

225ml of vegetable stock

450g sour cream

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 tsp ground cumin

2 tsp curry paste

225ml milk

1 squeezed lemon

Salt and pepper

Method:

Fry onion and garlic in butter, then stir in spices and cook for 2 minutes. Add parsnips and mix well.

Add curry paste and stock, then lower to a simmer for 15 minutes. Blend the mixture.

Return to the pot and add milk. Heat through and add sour cream and lemon juice.

Season well and serve with sour cream and garnish.

‘NO KNEAD’ BREAD

MY MOTHER loved to bake. She’d bake in the morning before work, she’d bake in the afternoon after work and I’d bet that she thought about baking while at work.

During COVID-19 she learnt to bake bread and would make it all the time.

I’d come home from school to massive ceramic bowls covered in tea towels, with bread rising underneath.

We’d have it with soups, curries, stews, anything we could. I loved her bread, and I hope you do too.

Ingredients:

3 cups of flour

2 tsp instant yeast

½ tsp salt

1½ cups of warm water.

Method:

Preheat an oven-safe pot in the oven at 190℃. Mix all ingredients together using a wooden spoon handle. The dough will be ‘sloppy’ — not kneadable. Adjust consistency if needed.

Cover dough for 2-3 hours — leave in warm space. Using a spatula and a bit of flour dusting, fold the sides in about 10 times to shape.

Transfer to baking paper and then into the oven in an oven-proof pot with the lid on.

Bake for 30 minutes with lid on, then 12 minutes without the lid.

Cool on a rack for 10 minutes before slicing.

A recipe in time to treasure

KELLY CARMODY HAS FOND MEMORIES OF HER GRANDMA AND IS MORE THAN HAPPY TO SHARE ONE OF HER FAVOURITE ‘GRANDMA LORNA’ RECIPES.

THERE WAS JUST something so special about how my Grandma used to cook, almost as if every dish was filled with love and created with joy.

My childhood memories of her blissfully listening to music in her cute cat apron, while she waltzed her way around her kitchen, are warm and affectionate and are as beautiful as her food was.

While going through my bookcase at home recently, nestled in the back corner and squished between other books, I found a spiral notebook.

The cover had a space ship on it, similar to what you would see on a Star Wars movie.

At first I thought this must have been my Dad’s, but once I opened it up, I knew I had just struck gold.

I had found one of my Grandma’s hand-written recipe books.

Her writing was as delicate as her nature, and I touched the pages as if she was right there with me, touching them too.

A notebook I will treasure forever as much as I did her.

It’s time to get to the kitchen and recreate her recipes in time.

Here is one of her winter warming favourites, Pork and Apple Curry. Delicious served with rice. Enjoy!

GRANDMA LORNA’S PORK AND APPLE CURRY

Ingredients:

2 medium onions, sliced

1 tsp light olive oil

500g pork fillet diced

3 Granny Smith apples, cut into quarters

1-2 tsp curry powder

1 tsp coriander

½ tsp cinnamon

2 cups of water

2 tbsp cornflour

2 extra tbsp water

Method:

Cook onions in oil until soft. Add pork and cook for 8-10 minutes.

Add cut apples to the pork with spices and cook for a few minutes.

Add two cups of water and cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes or until tender.

Thicken with cornflour and water.

Don’t send a whiskey girl to do a wino’s job

AS THE HEADLINE SUGGESTS, THE OUR HOME TEAM IS LACKING IN WINE CONNOISSEURS. BUT, THAT CAN CHANGE. SELFPROCLAIMED WHISKEY GIRL AND JOURNALIST TAYLAH BAKER GUIDES FELLOW BEGINNER WINE-DRINKERS THROUGH THIS SEASON’S TOAST-WORTHY BEVERAGES.

I’M PUTTING MY taste buds on the line, switching out my usual golden honey bitterness for the sweet juice of the grape.

“A glass of pinot noir, please,” I said.

I explain my journalistic predicament to the friendly face behind the bar while I wait for my drink to be prepared.

“Everybody has the potential to like wine,” the bartender said.

Flashback to 10-year-old me bringing a chalice to

my mouth and letting the red syrupy sludge touch my lips. Nose and mouth can’t escape the strong stench of fermented fruit, before the priest takes the cup back from me and moves on to the next.

Not likely, I thought.

Okay, here it goes.

PINOT NOIR

The pivotal moment – the first sip. Quite a smooth, silky texture. Surprisingly a dry beverage despite the fruity flavour and aroma. Easy to drink. Could imagine it balanced with a good, hearty meal. All in all, a nice gradual start to my wine journey.

Rating: 9/10

To accompany: Dishes like chicken or duck, or even a nice ravioli with creamy sauce.

NEBBIOLO

For the avid wine-drinker. Nebbiolo has a strong, undeniable taste. Described as a full-bodied red, it boasts ripe fruity flavours along with darker notes. As a beginner, I don’t fancy the strength. Note to self: Accustom taste buds with more Pinot Noir’s before tackling again. Non-beginners will enjoy.

Rating: 7/10

To accompany: Risottos, pastas, any kid of Italian dish, really. Also for nights when company is gathered around a card game and a cheese platter.

SHIRAZ

Looks can be deceiving, but not in Shiraz’s case. The rich ruby colouring is reminiscent of its rich tasting. Strong peppering aromas. First sip thoughts: Strong, then softens to a mild tasting. Ends with a burning aftertaste. An unmissable staple for those really cold days as this wine is the equivalent of a heater.

Rating: 7/10

To accompany: Roasted or barbecued meats. Or a spicy stir fry.

MERLOT

Soft, velvety texture. Seductive and boisterous dark cherry flavours. The drink is smooth with a cheeky little sprinkle of chocolate tastes to finish. Again, easy to drink.

Rating: 8/10

To accompany: Made for winter. Anything from hearty stews to Italian-style dishes.

THE RESULT

I’m no oenophile, yet. Baby steps. I’m now less inclined (and I hope you are too) to rule out a potential wining and dining experience in the future because, well, ‘wine’ not?

For all of us, there’s a lesson here. The next time somebody challenges you to leave your comfort zone and try something new, take my advice: Put a cork in it and do it.

Winter vegies thrive in patches

A VEGIE PATCH is just the thing to get in touch with nature and reap the fresh rewards.

Just like humans and animals, plants are living things.

They grow, can reproduce, and respond to their environment just like you or me.

When spending time with nature, whether it be out in the vegie garden or delicately dusting the leaves on an indoor plant, there is a real sense of achievement that you are helping something thrive and stay alive.

A vegie patch can almost play a therapeutic role in one’s life, who would have thought getting your hands dirty could be so rewarding.

For children it can be an educational journey, where they can thrive as much as the patch, while they learn a sense of responsibility and accomplishment as they discover the wonders of our magical world.

Even when it’s cooler there is still a big role to play. Vegetables to be picked, seeds to be sown and an array of plant life both inside and out that need continuous care.

Sally Moseley from Billabong Gardens Complex, said we shouldn’t let the rain and cooler temperatures scare us away from what was still a glorious time of the year.

“Growth may slow down in the winter but there is still plenty to do in the garden and a lot to consider

inside,” Sally said.

“Autumn and early winter is the perfect time to sow broccoli, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, and every child’s favourite, brussels sprouts.

“Leafy crops such as chard, parsley and rocket should also grow over winter, with a little protection.

“If you’re a vegie garden enthusiast you may have carrots, silver beet, baby spinach and types of Asian stir fry greens ready for a kitchen cook up.”

Sally described the indoor ‘hydroponic herb gardens’ as an excitement builder for children and mentioned there is much they can help with and learn from plants indoors.

“Winter means less light, and generally speaking, less light means less water, but if you’re heating your home your plants may need a little more attention, as they could be drying out much quicker,” she said.

“I suggest everyone that has indoor plants purchase a moisture meter.

“They stop overwatering from occurring, can be a fun indoor activity to do with a child and teaches them the importance of water to live.”

Nature can generate many positive emotions and some of the most intriguing plants on earth can be found sitting in the centre of our table.

Connect with the natural world, dive into its diverse and enchanting beauty, and as a result, you may find a greater sense of peace and connection within yourself and others around you.

Pooches rock warm jackets

NOTHING WARMS OUR HEARTS FASTER THAN SEEING A PUPPY DRESSED IN A CUTE COAT, BE CAREFUL IT DOESN’T EXPLODE, HERE ARE THREE.

THIS CUTE TRIO of Pomeranians – Annie, Elsa and Pepe – are all dressed up ready to rock winter in style on their large property on the outskirts of Rushworth.

Their beloved owner, Carmel Lucas, referred to her Pomeranians as her ‘fur children’ and said she didn’t think they minded being dressed up at all.

“I think they know it helps keep them warm,” Carmel said.

“When the seasons change and the cooler temperatures arrive there are often cold winds and a lot of rain, I need a jacket outside, so I presume they need one too.

“Jackets that cover the belly area and help trap the heat in from their own body, I feel work best. I do love the knitted styles though, they are very cute.

“People have to remember that when owning a pet you also have a responsibility to protect them,

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY: KELLY CARMODY Our Home Autumn 2023 90

and keeping them warm in winter can be vital to their health.

“Dressing them up just makes it a lot more fun.”

Keeping our pets warm in winter at times can become a difficult task, especially if they don’t want to leave their coat on.

There are many things we can do to help our pets stay warm, so here are some helpful hints for pet owners to keep their fury friends comfortable during the cooler months.

IF OUTDOORS, THE KENNEL IS A MUST

If your dogs sleep outside make sure they have a cosy kennel to sleep in and make sure it’s in a well-protected area of your home.

An insulated kennel will not only ad an extra layer of warmth in the winter, but will also help shield the heat when its warm.

A raised pet bed inside the kennel with soft blankets will also help provide your pet with some added comfort.

BRING THEM INDOORS

If possible, bring your pets inside to protect them from the cold, but keep an eye on where they are positioned so that they are not to close to heating that could cause their skin to dry out or even burn.

DRESS THEM UP

If your pets have short fur or are particularly sensitive to the cold, consider dressing them in a jumper, jacket or coat.

Have a favourite football team? There is a jacket for that.

Just make sure it’s not too tight so the pet has am-

ple room to breath and there are no long cords or buttons for the pet to chew or swallow.

KEEP

THEM WELL-FED AND HYDRATED

Feeding your pets well and providing them with plenty of fresh water can help keep their bodies warm from the inside out.

During the colder months pets need more energy to keep themselves warm so you may notice them being more hungry.

We don’t want to over feed our pets in winter and have them gaining winter weight, so If you’re concerned about their diet, contact a vet for advice on what to feed your furry friend.

USE HEATED PET MATS

Consider investing in a heated pet mat or pad for your pet’s bed to keep them warm and comfortable. Make sure they are safe and suitable for your pet’s environment.

KEEP THEM ACTIVE

Regular exercise and playtime can help keep your pets warm and prevent them from spending too much time seated.

This can be a challenging task with shorter daylight hours.

A quick game of fetch in the backyard is a good way to get them running, bring them inside for some trick time or opt to share the treadmill which apparently has become a thing.

Dogs need exercise everyday, no matter the time of the year. It boosts physical and mental health, just like it does for humans.
