ECHUCA DISTILLERY BRINGS PORTELLO BACK TO ECHUCA Echuca Distillery is bringing back the taste of Portello to Echuca, launching it at this weekend’s Perricoota Pop and Pour under a different name and concept. “For its history, it has been a much-loved drink over the years in northern Victoria, in particular Echuca, where there was a bottler for 100 years,” Echuca Distillery founder David De Vries said.

portello like Fruitello Vodka and soda, two variants of gin and tonic, citrus gin and pink gin and musk rose vodka all served in 250 ml cans. “We have called it Fruitello mainly because we didn’t want it to be identifiable with the younger generation,” David said.

Echuca Distillery, launches its new drinks can.ED. The new ready-to-drink flavours include Fruitello vodka, pink gin and tonic, citrus gin and tonic and musk rose vodka.

“A lot of drinks being launched in the last 12 months have a double meaning, and are attractive to minors, so we thought, let’s give it a different name, because one of the mantras of Echuca Distillery is ‘Enjoy more, drink less’.

After Perricoota Pop and Pour, Echuca Distillery will be looking for industry partners in the region to stock the can.ED range.

“You know how it works, it happens all over and Echuca lost out, which was a pity.

“That is what we advertise on all our packaging, and it is basically, instead of buying something that is less quality, we offer good quality, good value and just have the one instead of too many.

“After Pop and Pour it will be available at our cellar door out the front, but also we are looking for partners within the tourist industry because it will be particularly of interest to keep it going for the next 100 years,” David said.

“We thought, why not bring it back, even though we are going to give it a bit of a different name.

“The musk rose vodka is something we make in a bottle and we sell in the store.

Launching under the brand can.ED for the first time, you will find the drinks at this weekend’s Perricoota Pop and Pour at Perricoota Vines.

“Our musk rose cocktail in store is hugely popular, we supply it on ice with a musk stick.

“If you are interested in stocking the can.ED range, contact us after Pop and Pour and we will send you some samples, we are only more than happy to assist.

“They were really big here (the manufacturer) and they made sauces, canned tomatoes and soft drinks. “The sauces are still available, but they are made in New South Wales. “The canning went, and the aerated waters or soft drink went to South Australia.

There are four drinks in the range including the

“They come far and wide for it and because it is so popular in this area, we thought that we

could produce a variant of it.”

“It is history coming back to town and our aim is to employ some more people so we can produce these cans for the community.

Sip and nibble your way through the beauty and unique tastes of Echuca-Moama at tomorrow’s Perricoota Pop and Pour Festival. A progressive festival, Pop and Pour takes you on a food and drink journey to up to six of the Perricoota region’s best food, drink and wine offerings. Echuca Moama Events director Jacqui Wegener knows that the festival is a happy, vibrant, colourful and energetic day for everyone. “Everyone becomes so happy to engage with each other and I think that is the real magic of the event, the fact that it is just a really positive happy vibe,” she said. “You can’t help but be in a good mood. “So many people that I speak to have made festival friendships and catch up again on an annual basis now at the festival, which is pretty cool.” On the day, each venue has at least two live music acts, showcases local wines and producers, and if they are not a winery themselves, showcase other wineries and

producers from the region. “We have got the distillery and a couple of breweries as well, showcased at each venue,” Jacqui said. “All of the venues have festival bites as well, so it might be something like pizza, tacos, cheese plates or burgers. “It is a real variety and we try to keep it so each of the venues has a different menu and you have a bit of variety all around the place. “All day, buses keep moving from venue to venue to venue, so that people can jump on and off at any venue they like. “It is a choose your own adventure festival on wheels. Starting at either the American Hotel or the Border Inn, you will travel between Echuca and Moama, tasting the delights of each venue. For this year’s Pop and Pour, the buses are going to run in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions.

“Giving our ticket holders more flexibility on how they, or which order they get around to each of the venues,” Jacqui said. Tickets include all bus transfers, a good quality KeepCup to use at each venue and all the entertainment on the day. You will need to remember to book into the bus for your morning transfer, choosing your first stop. To find out if you can still get a ticket, if not already sold out, check out Perricoota Pop and Pour’s Facebook page for up to date details at www.facebook.com/popandpourfestival
