PREPS 2021
Celebrating our youngest students Your child starting their first year of school is a milestone that needs to be celebrated. Capturing that moment in time is important, and that is why we wanted to give parents something they can cherish forever. In this feature, you will find Prep classes from all over the Campaspe and Murray River areas as well as helpful hints and advice on how to get your little one ready for a big and exciting year. We’re showcasing more than 30
schools from the district including those not only in Echuca-Moama, but Kyabram, Rushworth, Rochester, Elmore, Cohuna, Leitchville and as far north as Bunnaloo and Mathoura, plus many more. Over the past few months, we have been contacting these schools and sent a number of photographers out and about to make sure we captured every class. While some schools had two, three or even four classes full of 25 students or more, we didn’t forget the classes with
five or even one Prep. We worked with these schools, getting to know their staff and of course their little ones to ensure we gave them all a chance to shine here in this feature. Our teams have worked to double and triple check with each classroom teacher and office staff to make sure we put a name to every little face. At the same time, we’ve had journalists researching and getting the best advice to pass onto you to help get through the year. While some parents are seasoned
n Arc Captain
professionals when it comes to their little one going off to school, we know there are some who may be sending their first child off into the big world. But we want to support you and give you tips and tricks that will help your student — and you — adjust to this new world you’ve entered into. From nutrition and making friends to helping with anxiety, we have you covered. So we hope you enjoy our 2021 Prep feature.

Don’t forget their
eyesentials this school year. Every parent wants to ensure their child reaches all their developmental and educational milestones.
But for a child to perform at their best, their eyes need to as well. Did you know that children rely on their vision for 80% of their learning? In our comprehensive children’s eye test, we not only evaluate the sharpness of your child’s vision, we examine the internal and external health of the eyes and assess how well they work together as a team. If required, we provide a tailored eyecare solution that considers lifestyle and vision needs.
Good vision is crucial for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Whether they’re just starting out or well into their schooling, adding an eye test to your back to school list this year will give you peace of mind that your child won’t miss a thing. For further enquiries or to book an eye test for your child, please contact us directly.

Good friends help children grow Someone to confide in, talk to and share things with — making new friends and keeping friendships are an important part of life, particularly for children and their development. Strong friendships help children grow social skills and become well-adjusted adults, and play a different role in kids’ lives to their parents. It’s important to talk to your child about their friends. Children’s friends are more likely to influence them short term, for example, how they dress and things they do in their spare time. Friendships can often change as well, so it’s important to remember the quality of the friendship is more important than the number of friends your child has.
Don’t be concerned if your child has a small amount of friends, as long as they are happy.
understanding that everyone makes mistakes is important to learn.
Arguments and forgiveness
Helping your child make friends
Like all relationships sometimes children will argue with their friends When this happens it’s important to ask the child why their friend is important to them, how they can show their friend how much they mean to them and talk about what caused the argument. Make sure you listen and use open-ended questions, the type that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no. It’s also important to remember that not all fights mean the end of a friendship. Sometimes our friends do things that upset us and
Friendships usually form when two people share the same interests. But if your child is nervous or shy encourage them to: • Say hello. • Speak to another child who seems shy. • Ask a question to start a conversation. • Listen to other children when they are talking to find out if they have anything in common. Supporting your child’s interests in clubs or sports will mean they can make friends outside of the classroom as well.

How to keep your child SunSmart Good sun protection routines are important to establish with your children from an early age. To make sure your kids have a SunSmart start to their education, after slipping on clothing that covers the skin, follow the slap, slide, slop steps. Slap a broad-brimmed hat on your child, slide on a pair of sunglasses to reduce UV rays, slop on SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen, and encourage your children to seek shade for outdoor play. When applying sunscreen, you can make it a fun and easy part of your child’s day by following these tips: • Make it simple: choose an SPF30 or higher broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen that your child feels comfortable wearing. • Make it fun: Applying sunscreen doesn’t have to be boring. Encourage your child to put a dot of sunscreen on each cheek, nose and chin and add squiggles of sunscreen to parts of arms and legs not covered by clothes. • Practise early: Let kids apply sunscreen
themselves from about three, so they’re ready come kindergarten or primary school. • Make it easy to find: Set up a sunscreen station in front of the mirror in the home. • Make it easy to reapply: 2020 Prep bags will have six colourful SunSmart stickers to remind students to ‘slip, slop, slap, seek and slide’ before they play outdoors. Stick them around the house to start the conversation with your child about sun protection, or try a clipon sunscreen that can hang from your child’s bag as a visual reminder. • On hot days, put sunscreen in the cooler section of your child’s lunchbox, so it’s cold and refreshing to apply. With Victoria’s high UV rays, sun protection is usually needed from midAugust until the end of April. For more information, Visit the SunSmart website or download the free SunSmart app to check when protection is needed each day.

Popular books for school starters Finding the right books for your child to prepare for their first day of kindergarten or school can be daunting. But reading to your child helps them develop language and literary skills, and data shows children starting school with greater literacy skills perform better in the classroom. To get a head start, The Riv has compiled some books that you can read to your little one to calm their jitters and give them an idea of what to expect on their first day. • Starting School by Jane Godwin and Anna Walker • Miffy at School by Dick Bruna • Old Friends, New Friends by Andrew Daddo and Jonathan Bentley • This Is Our House by Michael Rosen and Bob Graham • First Day by Andrew Daddo • Wombat goes to school by Jackie French • All the ways to be smart by Davina Bell • I am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child • Maddie’s First Day by Penny Matthews and Liz Anelli • Just Jack by Jane Tanner • The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn • My first day at school by Meredith Costain • Kindness makes us strong by Sophie Beer • The Berenstain Bears go back to school by Stan and Jan Berenstain • Hammie Goes to School by Cathie Whitmore (illustrated by Cathy McCulloch) • Tom Goes to Kindergarten by Margaret Wild • First Day by Margaret Wild (illustrated by Kim Gamble) • You be you by Linda Kranz • Invisible String by Patrice Karst
• Whoever you are by Mem Fox (illustrated by Leslie Staub) Many of these books can be found at Campaspe Regional Library Services or your school library. For more suggestions for age-appropriate books,

Paddy’s Playgroup Children from birth to 4 years of age are immersed in song, play, cooking, craft and story in a structured play environment. Paddy’s Playgroup is held every Friday from 9am-11am at St Patrick’s School. We welcome families from the district to come and be part of this wonderful morning of play, learning and discovery.

Healthy meals for healthy learners Nutritious and healthy food is key to helping children thrive while in the classroom. To help with your child’s concentration and learning, plan healthy meals and snacks ahead of time, and always start the day with a healthy breakfast. Breakfast gives students the energy they need to play, learn and concentrate throughout their busy day. A nutritious breakfast is low in sugar and contains healthy wholegrain foods such as cereal and toast, as well as some protein and healthy fats such as eggs or cheese to keep tummies full all morning long. If your child is one to skip brekkie, try these tips to make it tasty and easy.
Pick and mix to make a healthy lunchbox Making lunch together is a fun and easy way for your child to learn healthy eating habits. Always stick to fresh, unprocessed foods as much as possible, and swap out the sweet treats for a piece of fruit or a
tub of yogurt. The Better Health Pick and Mix table is included in the 2021 prep bags. It has practical ideas to create healthy school lunches.
Drink plenty of water Ditch the fruit juice or the soft drink — kids don’t need sweet drinks to get them the energy they require for the day. Instead, encourage healthy habits by packing water or unflavoured milk in your child’s lunchbox. Adding a splash of lemon or filling a colourful, reusable water bottle can help encourage the little ones to opt for water in place of a can of soft drink. And in summer, pack an ice block to keep food and drinks cold.
Remember to be a positive role model Your kids look to you as a role model — especially for nutrition. Show them that healthy eating is delicious and fun.
