PREPS 2022

Welcome

Cohuna Consolidated School

Every year a fresh batch of five- and six-yearold children from the Campaspe and Murray shires begin their education. Playgrounds in the region are filled again with bright-eyed students scrambling over the play equipment, running around on nervous energy, or moving with trepidation while exploring this place called school — a new place that will soon become as comfortable as home. For every child that walks through the school gate, life will now be different — they’re at ‘big school’. To record this momentous time in the lives of the students, The RIV visited the 33 schools in the district to create a family keepsake – The Preps of 2022. A keepsake to be enjoyed by the students, parents and grandparents alike. To all the new Preps, we wish you all the best as you begin your formal learning.

Don’t forget their

eyesentials this school year. Every parent wants to ensure their child reaches all their developmental and educational milestones.

But for a child to perform at their best, their eyes need to as well. Did you know that children rely on their vision for 80% of their learning? In our comprehensive children’s eye test, we not only evaluate the sharpness of your child’s vision, we examine the internal and external health of the eyes and assess how well they work together as a team. If required, we provide a tailored eyecare solution that considers lifestyle and vision needs.

Good vision is crucial for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Whether they’re just starting out or well into their schooling, adding an eye test to your back to school list this year will give you peace of mind that your child won’t miss a thing. For further enquiries or to book an eye test for your child, please contact us directly.

PREPS 2022 Girgarre Primary School

You’re not alone With the start of school life comes some challenges for students and families. From settling into the daily routine of school, to making friends and avoiding playground illnesses. The Victorian Government website has a plethora of practical information for parents. If children haven’t been around large groups of people recently, they may get sick a lot. Some of the common childhood illnesses include school sores, headlice, slapped cheek disease, gastroenteritis, flu and hand, foot and mouth disease. The government’s step-by-step guide gives direct links to the Better Health Channel, which

gives concise information on the common illnesses and can advise parents on what to look out for, how to prevent illness and when to visit the GP. There are also suggestions for children who have issues settling in, making friends and getting used to school life. Suggestions like staying in touch with your student’s teachers and principal if there are any concerns, or what help is available if a child is being bullied. For practical advice and step-by-step information, visit the Starting Primary School guide at: www.vic.gov.au

Families who read together, learn together A key motivation for children to read comes from parents and carers, says Primary English Teaching Association Australia. PETAA is a national, not-for-profit professional association that has supported primary school educators in teaching and learning English and literacies for the past 50 years. Providing a comfortable, safe and secure place for parents and children to share a book makes the child feel special. It fosters the idea that reading is pleasurable, which is transferred to other reading encounters. There are many benefits from reading for 10 minutes a day with children. These include: • Relationship building: At the core of reading is a relationship and its bond between child and parent or carer. • Children’s reading improves: PETAA reports the research is conclusive. When parents/carers support children’s literacy learning from an early age, everyone benefits. Outcomes for children improve when parents/carers and teachers work together. • Children’s self-esteem improves: When a child is shown undivided attention around a book it makes a significance difference to how students identify themselves as learners and readers. Children respond positively when parents show an interest in their learning. • Reading unites families through shared stories: Stories can form a common ground for communicating when a family reads together. Stories help students make sense of where they fit in the world and bind families. Find out more about PETAA at: www.petaa.edu.au/

ST PATRICK'S TONGALA 2022 St Patrick’s Primary Everyone matters at St Patrick’s. Our small school is committed to welcoming all and embracing diversity. The learning environment at St Patrick’s supports the academic and social emotional growth of all our students. Our school offers many specialist areas, including The Arts, Languages, Science, Technologies and Health & Physical Education. Our school grounds are spacious and allow the children to play freely.

Little Paddy’s Our Little Paddy’s Transition Program is designed to allow students a flying start to primary school. Little Paddy’s is held once a week from 9am-11am, during Term 4 and is for all children who are planning to attend school at St Patrick’s the following year. Children are prepared for a smooth transition to school by sharing in a variety of learning experiences facilitated by the Foundation teacher.

The Resilience Project St Patrick’s Tongala is a partnership school of The Resilience Program. The Resilience Project delivers an emotionally engaging program, providing practical, evidence-based mental health strategies to build resilience and happiness. The program focuses on three key pillars that have been proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). We aim to teach positive mental health strategies to help our young people become more happy and more resilient.

Learning for our

FUTURE Undera Primary School provides an aesthetically attractive setting for students to learn and play. We have an amazing new playground and expansive areas for students to be active learners. All students are offered a high quality education with a focus on developing both academic and social/emotional skills. Through the explicit teaching of the Respectful Relationships curriculum students develop a sense of self and others. Teaching staff support students to learn with high expectations for success in a safe and friendly environment.

The Schools Plus grant enables us to provide free education for the next 4 years for all students including all stationery, iPads and laptops, camps and excursions, school uniforms and our annual swimming program. Our school works closely with Undera Kindergarten to offer students a smooth transition from preschool to school.

For a tour of Undera Primary School and enrolment information, please contact Acting Principal, Ms. Robyn Bell, on (03) 5826 0211 or undera.ps@education.vic.gov.au
