Always something new to entice expo-goers Seymour Alternative Farming Expo organisers have promised an exciting experience for an expected 40 000 visitors to its 23rd show from February 14 to 16. While renowned as Australia’s premier alternaƟve farming showcase, the three-day event boasts plenty to interest and entertain people from farming and non-farming backgrounds. Expo director Colin Stray said organisers were commiƩed to presenƟng a “fresh and exciƟng” event each year. “We are passionate about geƫng the right mix of exhibitors, quality food and entertainment and providing a huge range of informaƟon on a broad range of agricultural topics,” Mr Stray said. About 550 exhibitors from Victoria and interstate will Įll Seymour’s Kings Park RecreaƟon Reserve to provide advice and oīer specialised products to suit small farms and rural lifestyles. Many of the exhibitors will be small operators which Mr Stray said he and his team had gone to great lengths to source. He said the Seymour expo gave visitors the unique experience of meeƟng the inventors and creators of the products available and was oŌen a springboard for exhibitors to grow their business. Livestock will again be a major aƩracƟon

at the expo with alternaƟve breeds in caƩle, sheep, goats and poultry on show. The Ag Zone will provide informaƟon for people on small holdings or exisƟng farm enterprises about the latest agricultural products and services. They can also learn about courses available through TAFE and services oīered by the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries. EducaƟonal lectures and workshops will conƟnue to be an important aspect of the expo, with GOTAFE Building Lectures, Farm and Rural Lifestyle Seminars and the Agricultural Society Lectures delivering 40 sessions during the three days. Topics will include soil health and quality, selecƟng the right machine for farming needs, keeping free-range poultry and other animals, and new building techniques applicable to

home and farm. The expo will also oīer local food and wine stalls, three food courts, and the popular Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen demonstraƟons. The CraŌAlive exhibit will feature everything from needlework, patchwork and quilƟng to cupcakes, jewellery and homewares. Visitors will also be treated to the tradiƟonal favourites of chainsaw carving,

snake show, and vintage engines and an expanded “Timberland” with a display of rusƟc hand-craŌed furniture. “People thoroughly enjoy the event and there really is something for everyone,” Mr Stray said. He urged expo-goers to allow plenty of Ɵme to “absorb” the show. “It’s amazing each year how many people plan to come for one day but end up coming for three — there is just so much to absorb.”

Lesser known breeds to be among those on display

Livestock is a focus of this year’s Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo.

Livestock will be a great attraction at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, organiser Colin Stray says. Mr Stray said the event provided a focus for some of the more alternaƟve breeds of caƩle, sheep, goats and poultry. “Breeders and owners are on hand each day and more than willing to help visitors with any informaƟon they might need, parƟcularly if they’re considering starƟng up a livestock enterprise,” he said. Two breeds of caƩle will make their expo debut this year. Sure to aƩract aƩenƟon will be the Texas Longhorns exhibited by Don Constable and Julie Brown, and Nargun Den stud’s Speckle Park caƩle. Patrons will also be able to see animals brought by the Australian Miniature Horse

Society to the expo on Sunday, February 16. The spectacular “minis” will strut their stuī before the judges in a range of compeƟƟve events. Another special aƩracƟon for the 2014 expo will be the Keilor Obedience Dog Training Centre’s Ňy ball compeƟƟon. Described as “drag racing for dogs” by the Training Centre’s Max Schellekens, the compeƟƟon will take place on the main arena on Saturday, February 15. “About 20 Ňy ball teams from across Victoria will be there to compete in a series of speed relay events over obstacles. It’s a great spectacle and the events will run throughout the day,” Mr Schellekens said. The Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo will also feature working dog demonstraƟons where patrons can see these magniĮcent animals put through their paces.

Taking a look at rural lifestyle

Complementing the agricultural and educational elements, the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will also shine a spotlight on rural lifestyle. It will oīer Įne local produce and wines, an outstanding selecƟon of food from three food courts, and a fascinaƟng exhibiƟon of country craŌs.

The food theme is carried through to the Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen. Expo patrons can see top butchers at work breaking down carcases, creaƟng and advising on the best cuts of meat, and can watch local chefs prepare a smorgasbord of mouthwatering dishes. The CraŌAlive exhibit features a raŌ of hobbyists and craŌspeople who will demonstrate and display everything from

needlework, patchwork and quilƟng to cupcakes, jewellery and home wares. Buildings and building systems for home and farm will be a highlight of the expo and will include a display by Heartland Log Structures which specialises in the design and building of log homes.

There will be a spotlight on rural lifestyle at the Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo.

of the BriƟsh royal family. Just as the menu at LeƟzia’s Cafe Bar Restaurant in Shepparton showcases Asian and Italian themes, Mr LeƟzia’s cooking demonstraƟons will celebrate his mulƟcultural heritage and experience. “People are busy working on or oī farms, so I am going to share hints that will help them save Ɵme and money, such as great ways to use alternaƟve or secondary cuts of meat,” Mr LeƟzia said. “I encourage people to come along and ask quesƟons. AŌer each session people will be able to sample or purchase dishes at the LeƟzia’s stand next to the marquee.” He will demonstrate how to prepare alternaƟve cuts of meat in Ňavoursome and tender dishes, which are quick and easy to prepare ranging from home-style sushi and curry to German dishes. He’ll even do a special ValenƟne’s Day demonstraƟon, showing patrons how to make chocolates and desserts that are sure to win brownie points! Another highlight will be the master versus apprenƟce cook-oī, in which the audience can decide if Mr LeƟzia or a young chef he trained, Brendan Thorne, make the best dishes out of a box of mystery ingredients.

Si

Presenters butcher Bob Dewar and chef Mario LeƟzia will also be dishing up hours of entertainment, making the large marquee the perfect place to sit down, learn and laugh. Mr Dewar (beƩer known as Bob the Butcher) and Mr LeƟzia will team up to show patrons how to break down carcases and then how to best prepare diīerent cuts of meat, including beef, lamb, pork, chicken, rabbit and crocodile. Both are excited to share their vast knowledge and passion for preparing food. They will give hints that people can easily use at home to help them save Ɵme and money. Mr Dewar will draw from his more than 50 years’ experience in the meat and hospitality industries to demonstrate the correct procedures for breaking up carcases. His presentaƟon will show people how to get the best value for money when shopping for diīerent cuts of meat and diīerent cooking methods. With a Vietnamese mum and a Sicilian dad, both who shared a passion for food, Mr LeƟzia was desƟned to become a chef. He trained at Mosimann’s London that specialises in Japanese cuisine and cooked for clients including celebriƟes and members

Manufacturing products for a sustainable future Seymour Rural Equipment specialise in design and manufacturing of products to suit your requirements in agricultural, commercial and industrial applications

Catch and store every drop Another year has flown by with everything gearing up for another fantastic range of displays at the 2014 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo of which Heritage Tanks is a proud sponsor. Expo patrons will be able to assess Heritage Tanks products inside and out. The sales people will be there to help establish which tank would best suit people’s needs, including the amount of water they could capture, their water usage and what opƟonal tank extras would help their applicaƟon. Heritage Tanks’ range of extras includes a guƩer that enables up to 100 per cent of the water oī the tank’s own roof to be collected, minimising erosion from water run-oī. The Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo provides the ideal Ɵme for Heritage Tanks to display its product because people can now make decisions on a tank and install it before winter rains. Whether building or just adding to your exisƟng storage, a Heritage Tank is a wise choice, aŌer all, how much water storage is enough? This is the quesƟon David and Helen KenneƩ asked themselves when they visited the Heritage Tanks site at last year’s Seymour

AlternaƟve Farming Expo. The KenneƩs, who own Pinjarra alpaca stud, had already bought and Įlled two 110 000 litre Heritage Tanks. They needed to add more storage to drought-proof their property and added a third storage tank aŌer speaking with Heritage Tanks at the 2013 expo. Heritage Tanks manufactures rural, domesƟc and commercial rainwater tanks that can help with increasing your water storage for future prolonged dry spells to sustain your family and/or livelihood. Captured water can also be used to Įght Įres, reuse in manufacturing or for crop preparaƟon such as spraying. With domesƟc capaciƟes from 55ര000 litre to 375ര000 litre, why not do the sums and invesƟgate the value of catching and storing every last drop? For more informaƟon, see Heritage Tanks’ display, visit www.heritagetanks.com.au or call 1800ര115ര552.

Latest broadband technology on display Telstra will return to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo with an interactive store for customers to try out the latest technology. A range of 4G blue-Ɵck-accredited mobile handsets, T-Box and NaƟonal Broadband Network devices will be displayed, as well as a Connected Home display. Telstra area general manager Steve Tinker said the expo was a great opportunity for customers to see the equipment they will need to access NaƟonal Broadband Network Co’s Įxed wireless network. “Telstra services on NBN Co’s Įxed wireless network will put fast internet speeds, internet-delivered television shows, movies and new applicaƟons within reach of local residents and businesses,’’ Mr Tinker said. “It will also provide the bandwidth needed to get households online using a growing range of connected computers, games consoles, tablets and smartphones.” Mr Tinker said the Telstra services on NBN Co’s Įxed wireless technology was an excellent alternaƟve to using 3G mobile broadband at home, especially in areas where there are a large number of people using the mobile phone network. He said fast broadband would open doors for people to work remotely and would make distance educaƟon more pracƟcal. “Customers in a wide range of areas around Shepparton, Nagambie, Seymour and Broadford can sign up to the NBN or discuss any customer service inquiries they have or quesƟons about mobiles or Connected Home either at the expo, online or in-store,’’ Mr Tinker said.

The Telstra interacƟve store will give expo visitors a chance to try out the latest broadband technology.

How fixed wireless works

NBN Co’s Įxed wireless network provides access to communiƟes that are located on the outskirts of major towns and ciƟes. The Įxed wireless services are delivered by radio communicaƟons via a tower that transmits a signal direct to a small outdoor antenna on a home or business. Because a permanent antenna is aimed precisely at

a Įxed wireless tower, signal strength and speed are expected to be reliable. NBN Co says it is planning to install enough Įxed wireless capacity to ensure that a single area is never overloaded with customers. The ultimate solar solution Giulia and Peter O’Keefe (pictured with their good luck charm – their foster child) were delighted to win the trail prize at last year’s Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo.

Ultimate Solar is a direct from manufacturer to customer supplier of Australia’s premium range of solar hot water collection arrays and storage solutions.

On the right trail for fun and information Winning the trail prize at last year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo was the icing on the cake of a great day out filled with family fun and information for Giulia and Peter O’Keefe. The couple had been to the expo several Ɵmes and last year met with family members for a barbecue lunch, which they ate under the shade of a tree while watching dog demonstraƟons. Mrs O’Keefe said the family loved the expo, which had a great, friendly atmosphere with vendors happy to help people who wanted to get the best of both worlds by

enjoying a slower-paced lifestyle when they got home from work. “For us, aƩending the expo is like going to the show as adults but the show bags are beƩer,” she said. “Each year we have collected a free naƟve tree or shrub from the Mitchell Shire and planted it onto our property. “We make it a day out, not only because we know it

is good value but to seek out speciĮc stall-holders for products and informaƟon.” The products they buy at the expo, as well those they won last year, have been put to great use on the O’Keefes’ Arcadia hobby farm, where they have extensive gardens, an alpaca, a small Ňock of sheep and chickens. This year, there will also be a trial compeƟƟon with prize details to be conĮrmed.

It specialises in domesƟc and commercial heaƟng, including pools and spas. The business also provides services for industrial, agricultural and dairy storage and heaƟng. UlƟmate Solar owner director Bruce McGeehan said the business only imported the highest quality, highest eĸciency solar hot water collector arrays and storage tanks, direct from the factory. ”This means you no longer need to compromise on quality as we can supply the best for less than most low eĸciency panels available from our compeƟtors,” Mr McGeehan said. The business also oīers a complete design soluƟon service. Its systems are customisable, so UlƟmate Solar can cater to each customer’s speciĮc needs. Available for demonstraƟons and on-site help, contact UlƟmate Solar on 9397 3993 or email ulƟmate@virginbroadband.com.au UlƟmate Solar will have a display at the Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo at site 157.

World-class training in Seymour Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE will start training in the new Central Ranges Trade Training Centre’s Northern Hub this month. The state-of-the-art facility at Seymour College oĸcially opened in August with the aim of maximising outcomes for young people in the region. The facility has been purpose built to provide world class industry level training in automoƟve, engineering and metal fabricaƟon, which was once limited in the surrounding areas. The federally funded iniƟaƟve will be key in addressing industry skill shortages in regional Victoria and paramount in providing educaƟon and future employment opportuniƟes to local people. GOTAFE has worked closely with employers and job networks to develop a training model that best suits the region’s needs. It will open the Central Ranges Trade Training Centre’s door to postsecondary school students on February 10 with the start of the automoƟve pre- apprenƟceship and apprenƟceship courses. GOTAFE’s commercial manager of technical educaƟon centres and vocaƟonal educaƟon training in schools Jon Lee said the facility was beauƟfully constructed, modern, accessible and would be a “fantasƟc facility for us to deliver training”.

“We are beginning with the preapprenƟceship and apprenƟceship programs in automoƟve but as demand builds, we will look at oīering further training to the community in the automoƟve, engineering and metal fabricaƟon areas,” Mr Lee said. “The interest we have received so far has been extremely posiƟve and we are commiƩed to developing exciƟng new opportuniƟes, which support educaƟonal and employment outcomes for local people within the Seymour area.” For more informaƟon, phone Michael Bull on 0490ര027ര142 or Jim Baker on 0457ര502ര168. GOTAFE representaƟves will be available at the Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo (site number 355) to discuss the new facility and courses GOTAFE oīers. In addiƟon to its exhibitor site, GOTAFE will host the Building Lectures Program held throughout the expo. The GOTAFE Building Lectures feature a range of presentaƟons promoƟng sustainable alternaƟves to the convenƟonal building market.

Conquest has your pool needs covered Conquest Pools is the main Victorian manufacturer of Įbreglass pools and will display the latest in design and quality.

Conquest Pools will showcase fibreglass models and a range of swimming pool accessories to help create your dream backyard at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The latest innovaƟons in robot cleaning technology will be on display including the Maytronics Dolphin Swash with models for smaller and bigger pools. Owner Dianne Winch said the roboƟc cleaners meant cleaning the pool would become less of a household chore and would leave more Ɵme for enjoying the pool. “It’s where cleaning is going in this industry, it’s far more user-friendly – you don’t have to learn how to operate a pump and Įlter system,’’ she said. BoasƟng 31 diīerent pools including new season shapes and sizes, as well a range of spas, Conquest Pools oīer a style to suit every home. Two pool models will be on display at the

expo, including The Flinders model in the new colour crystal granite pearl. “It’s almost white, which is becoming extremely popular with the trend of coloured LED lights,’’ Mrs Winch said. A range of maintenance gear will be available for purchase at the expo including Ultraquest handover kits, brooms and hoses. “A lot of people need to replace those at this Ɵme of the year because if they are leŌ outside the sun causes them to deteriorate,’’ she said. Conquest Pools manufactures all pools onsite and is the major supplier for Victoria, in addiƟon to supplying NSW and South Australia. Staī from the family-owned and run business will be on site to answer quesƟons and a complete pool package special is on oīer for installaƟon before June 30. Visit Conquest Pools at Seymour AlternaƟve Farming Expo site 343 and 344, go to www.conquestpools.com.au or phone 5821 1270.
