Celebrating 25 years of alternative farming The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is back bigger and greener than ever, so round up the family and make your way down to Kings Park Recreation Reserve for a weekend of bright ideas and entrainment. To mark its 25th anniversary, the expo is going green. The site will be powered by Green Power Solutions, which event co-ordinator Liz Connick said provided Australia’s cleanest and most reliable generators using biodiesel. “All temporary power we’re bringing in is green power,” Ms Connick said. “We wanted to introduce services behind the scene that demonstrate our commitment to alternative.” The must-see event has rmly cemented its place on the farming calendar and this year is no exception with more than 500 exhibits and plenty of attractions set to delight an expected 25 000 visitors. From camels and rare British white cattle to pygmy goats and alpacas, there will be no shortage of animals for new and established farmers to discover. They are also a hit with children looking to pat a new farmyard friend. With more than 20 breeds in one location, Ms Connick said the event was a great opportunity to talk directly to the breeder and get advice on the latest trends and newest products. “We have a great variety,” she said. “For any small to medium practising farmers, the

tree changer or someone new to the land, Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is where they can get all the information they need to help them decide what type of animal or breed is suitable for their farm. “If they are looking to install or upgrade their fencing or stockyards, then Seymour expo is your one-stop shop. “Our exhibitors are more than happy to demonstrate and will have their latest equipment and farming needs on site.” Embracing all things alternative, Ms Connick said the event was not just for those involved in agriculture or farming but a great family day out. She urged expo-goers to explore all four corners of the event. “The Kings Park Recreation Reserve is a unique site for an expo which lends itself to a relaxed atmosphere and visitors will encounter surprise and delight as they wander through the expansive grounds,” she said. “It’s a nice weekend event to enjoy food and wine and fun for the kids.” Visitors will be spoiled for choice when it comes to local, gourmet food, drink and musical entertainment at the farmers’ market and activities for the young and young at heart in the Kids Zone. What is alternative?

Born from a need to create a platform to share new ideas, the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo and the meaning of alternative have evolved over the years. As farming has progressed, so too has the expo, keeping ahead of trends and exploring fresh options. It is now a mix of an old-fashioned agricultural show, expo and farmers’ eld day. Event co-ordinator Liz Connick said the expo had developed from an “alternative hippie” to an “alternative innovative and educational” event. “The meaning of alternative now has a broader focus as farmers, especially small acreage farmers, are always on the lookout for the latest technologies, equipment, services, breeds and environmental solutions,” Ms Connick said. “It no longer means hippy but so much more innovation and takes into consideration the climate and sustainability. “Farmers have had to reinvent themselves and are constantly looking at new ideas to introduce to their businesses.” When the expo rst opened its gates in 1992, cattle, sheep and cropping were the mainstream and the event introduced many to organic farming. Now the movement can hardly be considered alternative. From the construction of tiny houses and container homes to food, particularly different cuts of meat in the Country Kitchen, Ms Connick said the expo had expanded to include contemporary ideas. “It’s a sampling of everything that opens and shuts,” she said. “You can sample camels’ milk, see demonstrations and attend cheese making workshops. “It’s a challenge these days to source alternative, but we feel each year we’ve been able to introduce something new.”

Buy tickets online for smoother entry Visitors to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will once again have the option to pre-purchase tickets online. Event organiser Liz Connick said after buying tickets online, expo-goers could use the designated priority-entry queue by scanning either a printed ticket or bringing it up on a smartphone. “We encourage people to purchase tickets online because then it will make entry

into the event quicker and smoother,” Ms Connick said. Eventbrite is again co-ordinating the online ticket sales and purchases can be made up to and including the nal day of the expo by visiting the seymourexpo.com.au

Many changes, but mission holds true Since rst opening its doors in 1992, the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo has always strived to give alternative farming a platform to reach the masses. While Bob the Butcher and the chainsaw carvers have been with the expo since the beginning, the rest of the expo has grown into a unique experience. Event creators Colin and Bev Stray said the expo had changed since the beginning, but its mission hadn’t. “The event has grown in every way but it’s always held its theme,” Mr Stray said. “It still has the opportunity for farmers to showcase alternative farming processes, but new things have been brought in such as building, construction and design and building materials.” Mr Stray said the idea came about

following a discussion among a few friends as he and his wife were venturing into ostrich farming but were struggling to access information. “There were only half a dozen people to call Australia-wide. We were contacting zoos to get more information,” he said. “We found ourselves jumping in cars and planes to get some knowledge, and then it dawned on us to try and get people to come to see us.” The event has grown into one of the most successful alternative farming expos in the southern hemisphere. Mr Stray and his wife have seen lots of

Although no longer involved in the day-to-day running of the expo, Mr Stray said he was excited for the future of the event. “We’ve handed it over into very good hands, with the opportunity to take the expo further and to take the next step that we could never do,” he said.

Tree change better than a holiday From the bustling and cramped nature of suburbia to the vast views and greenery of Toolangi, the Ricci family has experienced quite the tree change in the past year. Edwina Ricci said she and her husband Brendan had dreamed of having more land since the early days of their marriage. Having grown up and lived in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs for much of her life, by the early 2000s Mrs Ricci was more than ready for a change. “Since we were rst married we talked about having land. We found this land in Toolangi and it had everything we wanted” Mrs Ricci said. By 2003, they had purchased an expansive property in Toolangi and across the next decade set to work to turn it into their home. All the structures on the property have been largely handmade, with Mr Ricci taking on most of the construction himself. However, due to delays in permits, the large family home is still under

construction, with the Ricci family currently living in a smaller dwelling on the property. Yet Mrs Ricci said she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love the quiet, the air, the view, the peace,” she said. “It’s that feeling you get when you get out of the car and put your feet on the ground and no one else is around.” Although the commute to work, about 50 km, can be a “bit of a bother” at times, Mrs Ricci said she couldn’t imagine going back to suburbia. “There’s no way I could live in suburbia again. We have so much freedom out here. I couldn’t go back to having people on top of you,” she said. Living on a property with its own water source was important to the Riccis, who

The Ricci family have relocated from the eastern suburbs to a large property in Toolangi. wanted to keep their options open down the road. “We wanted our own water source, just in case we needed to grow anything or wanted to set up a business,” Mrs Ricci said. While they have a vegetable garden and have consistently grown their own produce, Mrs Ricci said they’re also looking to get some chickens and a milking cow.

The Riccis aren’t the only people to have enjoyed the idyllic views, with the property hosting two weddings in the past year. From the “spectacular” stars to the quiet surrounds, Mrs Ricci said she was always pleased they committed to the tree change. “A week wouldn’t go by that I’m not grateful for the move,” she said.

The many bene ts of dorpers Farmer Graeme Collins will spruik the dorper sheep and its many unique attributes at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Mr Collins, who runs the stud Merribrook, said people often visited him to learn more about dorper sheep. “We always have good interest,” Mr Collins said. “It’s mainly people looking to get in to the business, if not now then in 12 months’ time.” The sheep, which don’t need to be sheared, are also very fertile, which

Mr Collins said was a unique quality. “They can have three lambings in two years, which is much more bene cial nancially,” he said. “You can get them lambing at 12 months old, which is just phenomenal.” Mr Collins has been working with dorper sheep since 2004, following their introduction into Australia in 1996. He began working with the sheep after reading about their popularity in South Africa. He believes they would be suitable for a number of areas in Australia. Mr Collins said the sheep were easy

to care for and overall were very low maintenance. After almost 10 years at the expo, Mr Collins said he enjoyed coming back each year and being greeted by friendly faces. “We’re often set up beside the same people. They’re really great people and we’ve been able to build a strong rapport with them,” he said. “It’s good to be able to build up a friendship and clientele relationship with the people that come back and visit each year.” Find out more at the Dorper Sheep Society of Australia exhibit at site B69.

Thinking outside the box From a blank canvas to something out of the ordinary, JMB Construction has a passion for transforming shipping containers into unique, customised homes. Used as building blocks overseas for almost 10 years, the container home movement will make its debut at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. To give expo-goers a taste of the possibilities, JMB Construction will showcase a home theatre room container complete with seven recliners. The Shepparton-based business will show videos on the big screen of the construction process of its rst container home set to be completed early this year. Starting the build 16 months ago, owner and managing director Jamie Briggs said he decided to bring the trend to the country and use his own home as the guinea pig. “It’s the rst one we’ve done,” Mr Briggs said. “I wanted to do it because I enjoy doing things that are different and I want to give my clients something different.” Ideal for those looking for something alternativve, the simple industrial containers provide a blank canvas to create a modern,

individual home inside and out. Mr Briggs said shipping containers were not only used to create “an architecture look without the architect”, but they had many bene ts. “I look at them as a cheap starting point — you already have four walls, a roof and a oor,” he said. “They’re structurally sound building blocks. The framing stage comes together very quickly. “They’re fully sealed to begin with, so it’s easy to achieve a high energy rating. “Depending on the complexity of the build, 50 per cent of it can be done off site in a workshop so you’re in a controlled environment, meaning you don’t have to worry about the weather.” Mr Briggs rst learned about container homes after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. “The same people come back every year,” he said.

Peter Hodge, owner of Peter Hodge Camel Hire, has been running camel rides since 1993.

“We have schools of children come visit us and the kids get to have two to three rides. They love it.”

He said people loved camels for their personality. “They’re quite charismatic. They love to get into your face,” Mr Hodge said. “They’re so personal, affectionate and docile. “They kiss each other to greet, so they have no concept of personal space. They’ll get right in there and give you a kiss.” After 10 years at the expo, Mr Hodge said he enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and seeing the same clientele come back each time.

The camels aren’t camera-shy and have been known to pose for sel es. Yet, while their personality is well captured on camera, Mr Hodge said the way camels walked fascinated most people. “People are amazed by the way they walk and their rocking motion,” he said. “Little kids will sit on the camels and yell that they’re very lumpy.”

Creative chainsaw carvings Chainsaw carving is a time-honoured tradition at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Combining modern technology and the ancient art of woodcarving, the niche art form will again be a crowd pleaser with about 10 carvers creating intricate pieces during the three days. With international guests expected to show off their skills, professional carver and exhibit organiser Rob Bast said the expo was a great opportunity to see the artists at work. “We take big chunks of wood and make them into beautiful things,” Mr Bast said. “Anything you can imagine, we turn our hand to it with a chainsaw. “A lot of the time the pieces that are made are sold then and there during the weekend.” From eagles and bears to cars and abstract

furniture, Mr Bast said if you could name it, it had been carved over many years at the event. “We generally don’t go in with much of a plan because the logs are supplied by McPherson Media,” he said. “We do it on the y and let the logs dictate what we carve. “We like to use them as a blank canvas, look at the size and see what you can t in and take off the bits that don’t look the way you want it to.” Not only will visitors have a chance to see the chainsaw carvers in action but they can also take home their own masterpiece. The exhibit is located at The Woods and will include a gallery displaying works for sale while carvers will be available to take orders and commission pieces.

US goats shown for rst time The pygmy goat, which is known for its small size, will be one of two breeds on show at the expo.

The Semtech Animal Breeding Service will be showing off two new imported breeds of goat from the United States at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The pygmy goat and the myotonic goat have been bred in the US for more than 100 years. Semtech Animal Breeding Service owner Paul Hamilton, who will exhibit at the expo for the rst time, said the goats were unique but made great pets. “You can keep them on less than one acre and enjoy their wonderful personalities,” Mr Hamilton said. “The pygmy goats are known to be quite mischievous.” Pygmy goats are a favourite of small landholders and are well known for their cute appearance, tiny size and appealing temperament. Mr Hamilton said they were a great goat to have if you were looking to reduce the size of your sheep, which can be achieved through breeding. The myotonic goat, which is also known as the fainting goat or the Tennessee meat goat, will also be on display at the expo.

Mr Hamilton said he hoped to expand the breeds in Australia and in some cases change the perception of the breeds. “(We’ll) hopefully legitimise the breeds by showing them, not just telling (people about) them,” he said. Mr Hamilton said he had been attending the expo as a visitor for almost 30 years, but was looking forward to exhibiting. “It’s a major opportunity,” he said. “This is where people go to see what’s new in the industry.” Semtech Animal Breeding Service is located in the Sheep and Goat Shed.

A nod to yesteryear The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo crowd will be transported back in time when the ever-popular draught horses take over the back oval. Taking expo-goers back to a time before tractors, utes and technology were commonplace, the Heritage Draught Horse Club will bring about eight horses to give insight into how farmers once worked the land. President Vicki Higgins said the Clydesdale, Clydesdale-cross and Shire horses would demonstrate what they would have done in the olden days. “It’s all about what horses did in the past and we’re trying to keep the tradition of the working draught horses alive,” Ms Higgins said.

North-East Victorian Murray Grey Beef Cattle Breed Promotion group member Stephen Koch said the Murray Greys were a â&#x20AC;&#x153;breed that meets the marketâ&#x20AC;?. He said what made the breed great for a large commercial market were the same qualities that made it perfect for lifestyle farmers in the periurban market, where rural and urban areas crossover. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They meet the market speci cations and can nish on grass or grain. They easily meet the MFA standards,â&#x20AC;? Mr Koch said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But in that peri-urban market, some of the key attributes we breed for are temperament and calving ease. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the biggest concerns of not just the commercial producer but those with a handful of cows. originally bred in the Murray River region, was the only Australian breed of cattle and was iconic to the country. With a heritage in the colder regions, Murray Greys have been shown to be highly adaptable to the cold of the high country or the heat of the red centre. Their light coat and dark pigmented skin means they are well suited to Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hot summers and they have been shown to have better feed conversion for lighter coat cattle. The native way Karen Sutherland of Edible Eden Designs will be putting on a masterclass in bush plants, including how to set up a small-scale farm to grow them. Ms Sutherland will showcase native plants that are best suited to the Victorian climate at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo in an attempt to encourage people to use them in everyday cooking. “It’s a whole different experience when you’re growing foods that are native to your country,” Ms Sutherlnad said. “There’s the emotional and mental satisfaction of knowing it came from your garden.” A number of different bush foods will be on show, including old man saltbush, strawberry gum, native thyme, coastal salt bush and edible native owers. Ms Sutherland aims to inspire people to take on their own small crop of bush plants and give them the con dence to not only grow the plants, but to con dently use them in the kitchen. Her display will demonstrate the versatility of the plants, including her experimentation with vinegars and marinades, in the hope of opening people’s eyes to the plants’ many uses. Ms Sutherland will also demonstrate how to use fresh and dried leaves and how to grind the leaves for cooking. Her display will touch on the many bene ts of growing your own food, not just on a personal level, but also on an environmental and nancial level. “It’s better for your health and environment and, if you do it right, it’s better for your wallet,” Ms Sutherland said. “When you grow your own food it becomes a real connection. It’s something you share with friends, family and neighbours.” Ms Sutherland said there was always curiosity about native plants and she hoped people would be more informed after her workshop. Surprising conservationists Field & Game Australia is Australia’s largest wetland conservation group, promoting habitat conservation and hunting traditions.

Gippsland-based artist Olivia O’Connor and her hand-carved, bespoke wooden rocking horses will return for this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. After an enjoyable rst appearance at the 2016 event, Ms O’Connor will again treat expo-goers to demonstrations of the intricate skill of using traditional carving tools. Studies in furniture design and later prop making at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts led the artisan to forge a career in prop making and as a scenic artist. But inspired by her childhood on the family farm surrounded by horses and a schoolgirl passion for woodwork, Ms O’Connor left Sydney in search of greener pastures. She set up a studio among the rolling hills of Berrys Creek and got to work carving, painting and creating hand-stitched leather saddles. Ms O’Connor spends almost a month on each of the rocking horses, which she said were handcrafted with love. “Even though I use the same pattern, they are all different,” Ms O’Connor said. “They all have their own character. “They are something people look after and cherish.” A selection of the one-of-a-kind creations will be on display at the expo and Ms O’Connor said she would be answering people’s questions and taking orders. To be run in Leongatha at the town’s Men’s Shed, Ms O’Connor said the workshops would give people the skills to create a family keepsake. “I think a rocking horse is lovely because it’s an heirloom that will be kept by the family and to make your own heirloom is something special,” she said. “Once we get started I’m hoping to take it to other Men’s Sheds.” Ms O’Conner also does restorations and if people take photos along to the expo she will happily provide an on-site quote. Formed in 1958 in response to reports that Australia’s premier game bird, the Paci c black duck, could be extinct in as few as 10 years, Field & Game Australia lobbied the government to purchase and protect wetland habitats. The result was Victoria’s unique system of State Game Reserves. In 2002, Field & Game Australia started the Wetlands Environmental Taskforce (WET), a charity dedicated to the purchase and restoration of wetland habitats. The WET has just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Heart Morass wetland, near Sale, and will shortly be opening the Connewarre Wetland Centre, near Geelong. These and other Field & Game Australia conservation projects are made possible by donors and volunteers with a vision to share their respect for wetland habitats and for future generations to enjoy the ecological, environmental, educational and

Cheeselinks proprietor and quali ed cheesemaker Janet Clayton will teach the crowd how to make cheese and yoghurt. With more than 25 years’ experience in the dairy, Mrs Clayton will talk through the cheesemaking processes and answer questions. “At this demonstration we’ll show you how easy it is to make your own beautiful cheeses and other dairy delights in your very own kitchen,” Mrs Clayton said. “We’ll take you step-by-step through the whole cheesemaking process, using

Save money in the kitchen Butcher Bob Dewar is returning for his 25th year at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, bringing together a range of skills to demonstrate how to be more economical in the kitchen. Mr Dewar will be using a range of meats, from family favourites such as beef, pork and lamb, to more unconventional meats like kangaroo, hare and quail. As meat prices rise, Mr Dewar said it was important people learned how to make the most of their budget. “It’s about getting the maximum value out of what you purchase, and not just for one meal, but two or three,” Mr Dewar said. “People read a recipe and see they need 750 g of rump steak for a curry, so they go to the supermarket and buy it. I can show you how to get better avour from a lesser cut and explain to you why.” With almost 55 years’ experience as a butcher, including smallgoods sales and abattoir work, Mr Dewar relishes the opportunity to pass his knowledge on to others. “I have a responsibility to share this knowledge with the next generation. You’ve got to take the opportunity while you can,” he said. “Even if only one or two people from an expo can learn something and have it become a part of their life and their budget, then that’s a good thing.” Mr Dewar said events such as the Seymour

Alternative Farming Expo became increasingly important as less knowledge was passed between generations. “There’s a gap in knowledge. Our grandmothers all knew this sort of thing and it was passed down. It’s not anymore and we’ve lost that,” he said. Yet as traditional recipes such as casseroles come back into vogue, Mr Dewar said there was a growing desire to learn more about meat and various cooking methods. “People are hungry for it. No-one explains anything to you in the supermarket anymore,” he said. “It’s always super popular, and there are always plenty of questions. I could stay there all day answering people’s questions.” An avid traveller, Mr Dewar also pointed to the growing knowledge of other cultures as a force in the ever-changing food world. “For each of those cultures that have come along, we’ve taken it on board,” he said. “I’m always looking to learn about other cultures and recipes and see how I can use them.” Head along to Food Court 2 to see Bob the Butcher in action.

With 17 years’ experience in the kitchen, the Secret Garden Catering chef will run four sessions each day of the expo, while Travis Duffy will man the show on Friday. The sessions will look at lamb, beef, poultry and alternative meats like camel, as well as camel milk. Mr Hensley said he always tried to throw in a dessert, too. “I like to show them something a little bit different that you can do with alternative cuts and cheaper cuts,” he said. “The main message is we try and look

Live big in a tiny house Rob Scott and his tiny houses will again inspire people to downsize and experience life. Ahead of his second appearance at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, Mr Scott said his aim was to empower people. “You don’t have to have a great big mortgage and you can build it yourself,” Mr Scott said. “I see the downsizing movement as moving from a materialistic to an experience culture. “Your life isn’t about buying things to ll your house, but more about getting into the things you love.” Mr Scott owns Studio Trucks, where he builds the miniature structures on the back of old trucks. He said the tiny houses were heavier and more substantial than caravans.

Smoke alarms have a 10 year life span. The components that monitor the air inside your smoke detector deteriorate over time and lose their sensitivity, therefore reducing its ability to alert you to a fire in your home.

EVERY year fires are started by machinery operating in dry grass and crops on elevated fire danger days. This can vary from Grain Harvesting machinery, hay bailers, slasher’s right down to the common ride-on or push mower. In a joint initiative between CFA and the Victorian Farmers Federation the Voluntary Grain Harvesting Guide was created and is now used across most parts of the state. While the name advocates that it is for grain harvesting, the guide can be applied to all agricultural work including contract slashing where there is a risk of starting a fire. VicEmergency Hotline replaces VBIL

The Victorian Bushfire Information line has now changed to the VicEmergency Hotline and has a new number 1800 226 226. The new VicEmergency Hotline has been created for warnings, preparedness and recovery information, planned burns and more. The new hotline will replace the existing Victoria Bushfire Information Line (VBIL), SES Information Line, Victorian Emergency Recovery Information Line, and others from DEDJTR and DELWP. Streamlining all numbers to one consistent number will help ensure the community have timely access to information before, during and after emergencies. All existing phones lines will still remain active for a period of time but will simply forward to the new VicEmergency Hotline.

Furry and feathery family fun Farmer Darryl and his herd of furry and feathery friends will be back at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo with some new cheeky piglets and adorable kids. Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm was a big hit at the 2016 event’s Kids Zone and visitors will once again have the chance to get up close and personal with a farmyard full of animals and birds. Sheep, calves, goats, roosters, hens, fantail pigeons and rainbow lorikeets are all a part of the interactive display, where children are invited to pet, brush and feed the friendly animals. Darryl and Denise Sheridan have owned the mobile farm for 17 years and have gradually built up a collection of creatures to the point that they are now able to bring along mothers and their babies. Mr Sheridan said it was a fun experience for young and old. “People love the cheeky piglets but everyone has a different favourite animal,” Mr Sheridan said. “They’re all hand-raised and love the attention. “I’ve found we only need two rules — not to run and to be gentle with the animals.”

Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm will both entertain and educate for the three days of the expo, with Mr Sheridan reading four of his animal-inspired books as well as leading sing-a-longs. “I’ll be doing a session of story time with Farmer Darryl,” Mr Sheridan said.

“I also bring a collection of eggs that the birds lay and I give the kids some hints as to which bird laid each egg. “I’ll be clipping some wool off one of the sheep and putting it on the spinning wheel to show the kids how it’s done.” Farmer Darryl is located in the Kids Zone at sites T34 and T35.

Become acquainted with the great unknown The Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association will display a number of British breeds at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, with breeders hoping to raise awareness of a number of less common varieties. Association member Jason O’Loghlin said the public would be able to ask the breeders questions. “We have a display for each breed, with breeders on offer to talk to people that are interested,” Mr O’Loghlin said. “(The exhibition) would largely be about awareness, but also education and touching base with any new breeders.” Among the breeds included in this year’s display are Border Leicester, English

Creative crafts corner

The Crafty Corner is returning to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, full of all things arts and crafts, with wool, soaps and accessories on display. With more than 20 stallholders from across Victoria and NSW, visitors will be spoiled for choice. Organiser Shirley Codwell said there would be plenty for everyone, with scrapbooking, soft toys, baby clothes, candles and homemade cards just some of the stalls making an appearance. “We tried to keep everything one-offs,” Ms Codwell said.

“The majority is handmade, or something you’re able to make your own products with.” Ms Codwell said the stall holders enjoyed coming back each year and had gotten to know each other well over the years. “It’s good to just put the products out there and promote our products. We have a good time,” she said. With plenty of visitors coming through the area, Ms Codwell said there was always a surprise or two. “They’re sometimes quite surprised at what they nd,” she said. “Everyone is always happy with what they see and what they buy.”

Fancy fowls The Seymour Poultry Club will pro le a number of different poultry breeds at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, each with their own unique characteristics. The club, which has been running for more than 20 years, has more than 25 breeders from across the country contributing to the expo, with breeders from Victoria, NSW and South Australia, as well as local club members. With club members on the oor at the expo, any questions about the birds or anything poultry-related can be answered. Plymouth Rock chickens will be one of many breeds on show at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

“It is a great hobby to have and you can make a lot of friends out of it too,” Mr Macdonald said. Individuals can also purchase poultry at the expo and leave it in the capable hands of club members while they browse the rest of the expo. Mr Macdonald said one of his main breeds was Plymouth Rock, a slow-growing breed that laid well. But he said it was important to take your time with them. “The trick with Plymouth Rock is to let them grow at their own pace, and give them time,” he said. Mr Macdonald said the Seymour Poultry Club was a “very good club to join”. “(There’s) lots of people that can help you. The shows and sales they run are A-class,” he said. Get up close and personal with snakes A dozen different species of reptiles, including ve of the world’s 10 most venomous snakes, will be used to educate audiences at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Reptile specialist and Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia owner Allan Burnett will hold 15-minute educational presentations every half hour during the three-day event. “I will cover characteristics and behaviour of reptiles,” Mr Burnett said. “We will go through some techniques and tips to avoid bites and I’ll do a rst-aid presentation.”

Slithery snakes: Alan Burnett from Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia will teach expo-goers what to do if they come across a snake. Mr Burnett said it was vital for Australians to be aware of snakes and how to treat their bites. “We have 40 per cent of the world’s most venomous snakes, including in Tasmania, which only has three species,” he said. “In Victoria we have 28 different varieties of snakes, and 27 of those are venomous.” Mr Burnett worked as an intensive care paramedic for 20 years, but made a career move to reptile education after

befriending a snake expert. “I decided to get off the front line and got into education,” he said. “Prevention is better than a cure. “In Australia we are taught to swim in between the ags and shut the gate of the pool, but you do not get a lot of advertising about what to do if you come across a snake. “That’s my mission impossible, to keep everybody safe.”

The 15-minute reptile presentation will begin with an introduction to pythons and lizards, and the opportunity to touch the tail of one of them. Mr Burnett said it was important to teach people, including children, not to touch these animals in the wild but allow them to get their curiosity out of the way in a controlled environment. Demand for camel milk growing You can’t nd it in the supermarket but Victoria’s rst licenced camel dairy will again showcase its milk at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Since husband and wife duo Chris and Megan Williams launched the Kyabram business in 2014, the demand for camel milk has skyrocketed. To keep up, Mrs Williams said this year Camel Milk Victoria and its 150plus camels would make the big move to a new farm, four times larger than their current property. “This is going to be our biggest year yet,” Mrs Williams said. “The demand has been so strong we’ve outgrown our current farm. “In the next few years we’ll be hoping to have over 200 milking camels.” But Camel Milk Victoria is not stopping there. This year it will release a new range of products including lip balms, body butters and liquid soaps. Mrs Williams will take a camel and her baby calf to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. She said visitors would be able to get up close and personal with the animals and invited people to stop for a chat. Camel Milk Victoria will also have a stall at the farmers’ market, where expo-goers can taste-test and purchase milk, powdered milk and the range of soaps. Cattle for the future They may not be the most well-known breed but Brahman cattle are the choice for the future. The Australian Brahman Breeders Association is back at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to showcase the unique breed best known for its conversion rate and ability to survive tough conditions. With a bull, heifer and calf on display and a wealth of knowledge and experience with the breed, Brahman Breeders Association’s Southern Branch chairperson George Mercieca said the group would be there to answer questions on anything from the breed’s history to breeding and diets. “The idea is to give the public information on the Brahman cattle,” Mr Mercieca said. “Although they’ve been breeding them in Victoria for many years, they don’t get a lot of publicity.” Mr Mercieca said the breed’s most unique characteristic was its kilogram to kilogram conversion rate. “The conversion rate is incredible. Instead of feeding them fancy oats and grains I’ve taken them through the winter just on

straw and they look as fat as they would if they were grain fed,” he said. “They adapt well to any conditions. The hot temperatures don’t bother them at all. “Throughout the drought they still looked fantastic with shining coats.” While the breed calves easily with small calf sizes, Mr Mercieca said crossbreeding created a hybrid vigour with increased carcass size. A 12-month-old grass-fed steer could weigh up to 450 kg. Brahman beef is in demand worldwide. Stockyards built to last

Violet Town Rural is now manufacturing its own line of stockyard equipment under the VTR Stockyards brand. The yards are made from Australian steel and are proudly Australian made. VTR spent 10 years selling other manufacturers’ products and was nding it dif cult to get them to listen to customer feedback. Manufacturers were creating the same old products and not moving forward with the times, so VTR decided it was time to take the next step and make its own line of products. So far the business has made a full range of semi-permanent and permanent cattle yards, four different cattle ramps, six cattle crushes, fully sheeted force tubs to remove the danger to operator, and a range of quality sheep yards, ramps and V-races. The business aims to make a premium product from premium Australian steel that has the tensile strength and quality galvanising that the imported products tend to lack, all the while striving to keep the price as low as possible. Premium products: Violet Town Rural’s own line of Australian steel stockyards will be on display at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Choice at Konigs Innovative Ferrari, BSC tractors and Solis tractors with compact Hysoon equipment sold by Konigs Shepparton will be on display at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. After striking a deal with Hysoon Australia, the Shepparton-based business extended its product range late last year and will now showcase the mini diggers and attachments at the expo for the rst time.

Solis, which trades internationally as International Tractors Limited, has tractors ranging from 20 hp to 110 hp with tractors available in cab and platform versions.

Striving to produce the best possible machines at the lowest possible price, Hysoon Australia’s sales manager Tony Serio said two products in particular were the most popular.

Constantly pioneering new technologies, the company has produced narrow track and compact tractors to meet individual agricultural needs.

“The 380 has an Italian triple pump, joystick and valves as well as a Japanese engine.” The Italian-manufactured Ferrari and BCS tractors have a low centre of gravity which offers a high level of safety when working on steep, hilly country and across slopes of 45 degrees.

Konigs Shepparton will also showcase Solis tractors, an internationally recognised brand, producing more than two million tractors a year with a presence in more the 80 countries.

The four-cylinder Solis 60 tractor is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive and is equipped with synchronised transmissions, adequate front weights and a reverse synchro shuttle feature to make loading and unloading easier. The narrow tractors in the range, which ranges from 60 hp to 90 hp, are narrow by design but powerful by nature, equipped with an improved gearbox, power steering and minimum turning radius, ideal for mulching, mowing and soil management, and orchard and vineyard application.

Lightweight homes built for you Flexibility is key for family-owned lightweight home construction specialist Swenrick Constructions. The weatherboard-style home builder operates out of Buxton but constructs its range of designs Victoria-wide. “But the beauty of it is that we built it so that all the structural stuff has been dealt with so they’re moving into a house that is secure.” The exibility doesn’t stop there, with Swenrick offering a range of styles and colours to choose from, as well as the ability to apply any changes and modi cations to achieve a client’s dream home. “We’re certainly not a kit or locked into modules, so whatever they want they can have and they usually do that,” Mr Kulman said. “We have a pretty extensive standard range which caters for entry level, mid-level and cottage-style, contemporary and even to the nth degree when a client comes in with their own architectural drawings.” As well as building new homes Swenrick offers extensions for clients who don’t want to start from scratch. Swenrick staff will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo at sites EB58 and EB 59 to assist anyone considering building a new home.
