Small changes, same great expo Round up family and friends and put on a sunhat — the 25th Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is coming up and is sure to delight an expected 25 000 visitors with more than 500 exhibits and plenty of attractions to educate and entertain the whole family. With a diverse assortment of quirky exhibits, captivating demonstrations and entertaining activities, visitors will be entertained, engaged and exposed to new ideas and enterprises. From sheep and cattle to alpacas and poultry, there will be no shortage of animals, which are always popular among farmers and young children at the expo. “There’s a great variety — it’s not all one style of animal to see,” Seymour Alternative Farming Expo exhibitor co-ordinator Fiona Smolenaars said. An impressive list of sheep and cattle breeds — including Dorper sheep and Red Poll, Red Angus and Highland cattle — will interest both established and new farmers. “People will get a chance to look at the huge variety of cattle and sheep. They will get to see in real life what people can have on their farm or their property,” Ms Smolenaars said.

A dedicated Kids’ Zone will keep children entertained with activities like a petting zoo, the snake man and jumping castle. With the temperature known to skyrocket in Seymour during February, the expo will open an hour earlier than usual, at 8 am, giving visitors the option to beat the heat and start exploring what is on offer more comfortably. Not only will the expo see a time change this year, but its site layout has been altered slightly to provide more of a “supermarket aisle shopping feel”, enhancing access for the public and exposure for the exhibitor Ms Smolenaars said. “We have made enhancements to the site based on exhibitor feedback and with an aim to build a broader visitor appeal and improve pedestrian flow past all sites,” she said. Quality and variety of food is always essential for a good day out and this year’s expo will not disappoint with a specially designed culinary precinct which includes three food courts, the informative and inspiring Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen and the fresh tastes of the Farmers’ Market all in one place. Ms Smolenaars said the expo was not just for those involved in agriculture or farming but for anyone seeking an enjoyable, family day out.

Ready to throw open gates The McPherson Media Group is ready to open the gates to this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo after a successful first year planning and managing the event in 2015. Event manager Kelvin Maude said the expo, which was established in Seymour in 1991, was a credit to previous owners Bev and Colin Stray.

The gates are ready to open on the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Fancy fowls in feathered finery The Seymour Poultry club’s sale shed is perhaps one of the coolest places to be at the Seymour Expo.

This standard white leghorn looks to be making a bid for freedom at last year’s sale.

Over the years the club has catered for summer weather by using two large fans attached to misters to keep the chooks, and any visitors, comfortable. Club secretary Ross Green said during the three-day event the club had about 1000 birds spread between 200 and 500 pens. “We have a very diverse range and most of the fowls we have there are pure-bred poultry,” Mr Green said. A single pen at the expo generally holds two hens and a rooster, however Mr Green said buyers often left the rooster behind.

PAGE 4—‘Seymour Alternative Farming Expo’, February, 2016

“That’s been a big trend over the years,” Mr Green said. “If they want the pen they take the two girls and leave the big boy behind.” Mr Green said the club was trying to promote pure-bred poultry by getting buyers to purchase a breed, rather than a colour. “What we trying to do is get people away from the Isa brown, or the black chook, or the white chook or the red chook and get them onto a breed,” he said. Mr Green suggested buying breeds

such as the Rhode Island Red, or the Plymouth Rock, a large grey and white banded chook. The club is expecting their main customers at the expo to be hobby farmers wanting to purchase chooks to lay eggs in their backyard. Mr Green said chook buyers generally focused on appearances, with most people wanting to buy a “pretty looking chook”. The Seymour Poultry Club and its many chooks can be found in the Poultry Shed.

Star of the show border collie Brodie and handler Jeff Socha demonstrate canine disc.

And they’re racing! Man’s best friend will demonstrate speed, skill and obedience during the canine disc and flyball competitions at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Australian Flyball Association Victorian representative Rodney Gooch said the Seymour flyball event was a lead-up to the Royal Canberra Show and was expected to attract up to 14 teams of six dogs. Mr Gooch said flyball was an exciting spectator event and was based on activities dogs naturally loved, including running, jumping and retrieving objects. He said flyball relay was a canine team sport that involved two teams of four dogs racing a 15.5 m course, with each dog jumping over four hurdles before triggering the flybox peddle to retrieve a ball and return to the start/finish line before their dog teammate takes off and completes the same course. “There is a run-off area behind the start/finish line and the idea is to start your dog at a certain distance so by the time they cross the start line they are running at top speed,” Mr Gooch said. As soon as the nose of one dog in a team crosses the finish line the next dog can start and Mr Gooch said these changeovers were

recorded electronically as the dogs were running so fast it was difficult to determine with the naked eye if a dog crossed the line early. He said individual dogs in highly trained teams were able to cross the start/finish line at precisely the same time and while dogs of all breeds competed, it was the working dogs, including kelpies and border collies, that excelled. The canine disc is a growing sport nationally and involves teams of a handler and dog tossing and fetching a disc over certain distances. Mr Gooch said there were also games, time trials and a freestyle component where dogs performed choreographed moves and tricks to music. Canine disc was a demonstration event at the 2015 expo and is expected to draw 15 to 20 teams in its first year as a competitive event. The events will be staged on the main oval, with flyball running for most of the day on Saturday, February 20, and canine disc on Sunday, February 21.

Tiny houses, big results Living big might be the goal for some, but for Rob Scott downsizing is the way to a happier life. “I’m promoting being empowered — the whole movement is about downsizing so you don’t have all that materialistic stuff that’s a burden,” Mr Scott said. Mr Scott’s tiny houses, known as studio trucks, are built on the back of old trucks from the 1950s and 1960s from his farm property Hollyburton at Clarkefield. For the first time at the expo, Mr Scott will team up with qualified carpenters and Dutch student, Joep Pennartz, giving advice on tiny house construction and will physically build one during the three days. After identifying depression among farmers as a common issue, Mr Pennartz embarked on his enterprise program called Shacky. By offering these studio trucks for bed and breakfast accommodation on their farms, farmers can access the means for combating the illness — income and socialisation. Mr Scott said tiny house living could bring unexpected benefits such as more community engagement. “If you can build your own house, grow your own food, entertain yourself and unplug from the commercialism, you end up taking back your life.

Mr Scott received orders for the tiny houses last year and said he had a waiting list for this year. While he appreciated the interest, he is not building for business. “It’s nice to keep it in the creative, playful, uplifting zone, than turn it into the nine-to-five zone otherwise the heart and soul part goes out of it and it becomes a business.” While the adorable abodes resemble cubby houses, they are practically liveable and, as Mr Scott reiterated, they have many uses, from home office to teenage pad. Mr Scott built his first one in 2008 out of necessity as an extra bedroom for one of his three children. “I had an old truck in the paddock (and it) gave me the idea to build something on the back of the truck.” Studio trucks are roadworthy but not for everyday travel, so Mr Scott builds smaller versions, or “doll houses”, which are more suitable for travel as they can be attached to trailers. While they are small — 2.4 m wide and around 9 m long — Mr Scott believes studio trucks are cosy, not suffocating. “I call them buildings that hug you,” he said. site selection, harvesting and marketing.

11 am: Getting to the bottom of your soil Soil is not just dirt. Understanding the characteristics of soil can help you manage it better and improve farm productivity and profitability. This downto-earth session will focus on simple, practical tests that will help you get to know the soils on your property. All you need is a bucket, a spade and a willingness to get your hands dirty. There will be soil samples to look at, information about the challenges and limitations of different soil types, and advice on how to prevent and repair eroded areas. Brad Costin is a land management extension officer at the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Noon: Bush herbs for pleasure and profit Amazing varieties of edible and fragrant native plants thrive in Victoria but most are still unknown to foodies, farmers and gardeners. Bush herbs, as they are known, include lemon and cinnamon myrtles, native pepper, and native thymes and mint. Many offer potential as niche farm enterprises. There will be samples to smell and taste, ideas about value adding to maximise crop returns, and information about growing requirements,

Karen Sutherland runs the Melbournebased business Edible Eden Design and a home-garden laboratory. 1 pm: Your own wonderful waterway We love our rivers and creeks, and there are plenty of practical steps landholders can take to look after and repair these special places. Improving water quality, encouraging native fish and frogs, and restoring aquatic habitat and streamside biodiversity to encourage birds and other helpful predators are just some of the benefits. If you are already tackling weeds, restoring native vegetation, and excluding or limiting stock access — take a bow. Landholders may be eligible for financial incentives to assist with works such as fencing, off-stream watering and purchase of native plants. Jim Castles is the riparian and river channel manager at Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority. 2 pm: Getting through the dry times Many landholders are wondering if they have sufficient feed and water to see their livestock through until the autumn break. Brad Costin and Racquel Waller will explain how to calculate the amount of feed in your paddock, how much water

is in your dam, and how to allow for evaporation. Then, based on the energy and water requirements of horses, sheep and cattle, you will be able to work out how long your feed and water will last, and how much fodder you might need to buy in. There will be case studies and handouts to take home. Brad Costin is a land management extension officer at the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Racquel Waller is a livestock extension officer at the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources.

Saturday, February 20 10 am: Restoring health and life to soils Brenton Byerlee Paul Flemming 11 am: Pigs in the pink Pigs are quirky animals so not surprisingly they have different requirements to sheep and cattle. To meet the growing interest in keeping paddock pigs Trish Holyoake will present a session on how to look after and get the best out of pigs. The session covers feeding, breeding, health care, selecting and purchasing stock, marketing, and the all-important

planning, legal and welfare requirements. Trish Holyoake is the principal of specialist pig practice Holyoake Veterinary Consulting. Noon: Fires and livestock — what’s your plan? We all know how important it is to have a bushfire plan for your family and pets, but what about your horses and livestock? Dr Lee Manning says inadequate planning for the management and welfare of animals in emergencies can result in last-minute decisions — with dangerous or fatal consequences. You may need alternative plans to accommodate the ‘stay or go’ scenarios. Dr Manning will discuss evacuation and refuges, how to help animals survive if they cannot be evacuated and how animals behave in a fire. Dr Lee Manning is a district veterinary officer with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. 2 pm: Hemp future is here Lyn Stephenson

Family friendly animal fun The number and types of animals and birds within Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm display will delight visitors to Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Calves, piglets, lambs, rabbits, goats, hens, geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, fantail pigeons and rainbow lorikeets are part of the interactive show. Owners Darryl and Denise Sheridan started their enterprise about 16 years ago and have gradually built up an extensive collection of farmyard birds and animals that number in the hundreds. Mr Sheridan said he takes his mobile animal farm all over Victoria and into southern NSW, giving children and families the opportunity to see animals closeup as well as watch sheep being hand shorn, grain crushed and wool spinning. Children are invited to pat and brush the animals as well as feed them. “Our animals are used to being handled, they are very quiet,” Mr Sheridan said.

He said the animal farm was designed to be informative with spectators able to ask questions and learn about the various animal breeds and their unique characteristics. The mobile animal farm has a range of props including trailers decorated as a log cabin hut, rusty tin shed, horse stable and an old hay wagon that form the backdrops for the show. During the three days of the Seymour expo Mr Sheridan will hand shear one of his woolly sheep and spin the wool to demonstrate its place in the production of clothing. He also holds up eggs from geese, turkeys, pigeons and hens and gives a series of clues for the audience to guess which bird they were laid by. The animal farm is a key feature of the newly created Kids’ Zone at the expo.

GOTAFE sustainability short talks FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19

Allan Burnett from Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia will teach people about the characteristics and behaviours of reptiles.

A first-aid presentation will cover how to treat a snake-bite and snakebite kits will be available to purchase.

Get up close and personal with snakes A dozen different species of reptiles, including five of the world’s top 10 most venomous snakes, will be used to educate audiences at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Reptile specialist and owner of Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia, Allan Burnett, will hold 15-minute educational presentations every half hour during the three-day event. “I will cover characteristics and behaviours of reptiles, we will go through some techniques and tips to avoid bites, and I’ll do a first-aid presentation,” he said. Mr Burnett said it was vital for Australians to be aware of snakes and how to treat their bites. “We have 40 per cent of the world’s most venomous snakes, including in Tasmania, which only has three species,” Mr Burnett said. “In Victoria we have 28 different varieties of snakes, and 27 of those are venomous.” Mr Burnett worked as an intensive care paramedic for 20 years, but made a career move to reptile education after befriending a snake expert before his death.

“I decided to get off the front line and got into education,” Mr Burnett said. “Prevention is better than cure. “In Australia we are taught to swim in between the flags and shut the gate of the pool, but you do not get a lot of advertising about what to do if you come across a snake. “That’s my mission impossible, to keep everybody safe.” The 15-minute reptile presentations will begin with an introduction to pythons and lizards, and the opportunity to touch the tail of one of them. Mr Burnett said it was important to teach people, including children, not to touch these animals in the wild but to allow them to get their curiosity out of the way in a controlled environment. The Reptile Awareness Display of Australia will be at site E47 near the new Kids’ Zone.

11 am: Powerful news — the latest on solar batteries Solar batteries and storage are a hot topic at the moment, with the technology becoming more reliable, efficient and affordable, and a number of big players moving into the solar battery market. Karl Edmonson from EnviroGroup will present an overview of the better battery systems and how they work. Sizes and power outputs, compatibility with your current solar power set-up, single and three-phase power, levels of blackout protection and capacity to go off-grid will all be covered. Karl Edmonson is the manager of solar battery design at EnviroGroup. Noon: Helping farmers to be climate smart As farmers are well aware, climate change will bring both risks and opportunities for agribusiness in the Goulburn Valley. The Goulburn Broken Greenhouse Alliance in partnership with Deakin University is running a project to map future impacts of climate change, including rainfall and temperature changes. It is producing 17 models of key regional commodities to indicate the shifts in their productive areas over time. These digital maps, in 5 km square grids, enable landholders to source relevant data. The project aims to support agribusiness and local governments to adapt and take advantage of climate change. Expo visitors will be among the first to hear the project findings. Thomas Brown is the executive officer and Marisa O’Halloran is a project officer for the Goulburn Broken Greenhouse Alliance. Dr Robert Faggian is the associate professor of climate change adaptation at Deakin University’s Centre for Regional and Rural Futures. 1 pm: A nine-star house done dirt cheap Yes, you can build an eight or nine-star house — and it definitely won’t cost the earth, according to Tim Adams of F2 Design. Knowledge, not money, is the key to passive, energy-efficient design. Tim will discuss materials, orientation, the issues of heating and cooling, thermal mass, the best ratios of glass windows to floor area, and how solar appliances can be integrated into design solutions. He will also share his experiences designing and building his own house with no bills on the Surf Coast. One of his designs won the 10 Star Challenge for the Builders and Designers Association in 2012. Tim Adams is the principal at F2 Design, BDAV past president and current chair of BDAV sustainability hub.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20 10 am: Cut household energy bills Do you know the energy hogs in your house? If you are being burned by high energy bills, Andrew Reddaway can help you to understand your household bill, your electricity plan, your meter, and your energy consumption. He will nominate some easy targets for you to start on and suggest simple retrofitting ideas to improve thermal efficiency. Information on options for hot water, heating and cooling, how to use excess solar generation and payback times for grid-connected solar will help you take practical steps to make informed decisions in the future. downsize, reduce their building and living costs, escape the rent cycle, spend more time outdoors and enjoy their lives. His beautifully crafted small buildings built on truck chassis have attracted national media attention and he runs workshops to help others build their own. Tiny houses can be used for bed and breakfast accommodation, granny flats, studios and extra bedrooms. You will be inspired by the romance and utility of these buildings, and Rob will offer lots of practical information to help you get started. Rob Scott and his family live a simple life on their organic farm Hollyburton Park. Noon: A beginners’ guide to solar Going solar has never been so affordable, but at the same time consumers are faced with choosing from a huge range of hot water and power systems and technologies. Karl Edmonson will offer down-to-earth advice and information about how to reduce power bills and enjoy long-term reliability, durability and performance. Topics will include how to choose the right system for your household or business, costs and savings, planning and compliance issues, maintenance, safety and going off grid. Karl Edmonson is the manager of solar battery design at EnviroGroup. 1 pm: A beginners’ guide to preserving Are you over-run with zucchinis? Do your apricots hit the ground before you can think what to do with them? And would you like to rescue all that fruit on the fig tree next door? Noela MacLeod will draw on more than 45 years’ experience to share her practical, tried and tested preserving tips, ideas and recipes. Jams, sauces, fruit leathers, tomato paste, bottling, sun and oven drying, and fruit bottling without a Fowlers kit will be discussed. You will also hear how excess produce can be turned into fundraisers, and how community groups are harvesting and preserving excess produce. Noela MacLeod is a member of honour, and past state and national president of the Country Women’s Association. 2 pm: Will it rain this autumn? It is the golden question on everyone’s lips, but Dale Grey stresses you can’t exactly predict these things. As well as looking into his foggy crystal ball for answers, Mr Grey will discuss the factors that influence our past, recent and future weather, including the Pacific and Indian Oceans. He will also explain climate variability, El Nino and La Nina, and what the various autumn and winter rainfall predictions from local and international sources are telling us. Dale Grey is a seasonal risk agronomist with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources and writes the farmer newsletter Fast Break.

All about alpacas Australia has one of the world’s largest alpaca herds, second only to the country of origin, Peru, and a selection of the unique animals will be showcased at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The Victorian central region of the Australian Alpaca Association will host a large marquee filled with pens of alpacas, stands from 11 individual breeders, alpaca fleeces, yarns, felted garments and toys. Display convenor Kaz Gaisford said alpacas were ideal livestock for small acreages as they required minimal care and their soft pads didn’t compact the earth. They also deterred predators and were extremely protective of other animals within their environment including lambs, goats and chickens.

“Alpacas are very easy to manage, they need to be shorn once a year, have their teeth and nails done and are very hardy to parasites.” Kaz Gaisford

The organisation exhibits at the expo each year and draws large crowds of people, from who simply wish to see an alpaca close-up to those contemplating starting a small breeding program. “We also have people come through who have a few acres and just wish to have a couple of lawnmowers to keep the grass down and the place tidy,” Ms Gaisford said. Alpacas were also popular as pets. Ms Gaisford said the first of the present wave of alpacas came into Australia about 25 years ago and were now highly sought-after by breeders from China, United Kingdom and Europe to improve the bloodlines of their herds. Visitors to the alpaca marquee will have the opportunity to speak with experienced alpaca breeders, learn about care requirements and admire the animals. Visit the Australian Alpaca Association at sites B16 to B19.

‘Seymour Alternative Farming Expo’, February, 2016—PAGE 11

Milking a growing demand Camel milk is not an item found in the refrigerator section at large supermarkets but at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo there will be plenty of it to go around. Megan and Chris Williams milk camels on their farm in Kyabram and will be back for their second time at Seymour to educate visitors about the product.

Mrs Williams said they were currently the biggest camel milking operation in Australia and, as far as they knew, the only suppliers of camel milk in Victoria.

Camel milk is high in vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and iron, and contains 30 per cent less fat and 40 per cent less lactose than cow’s milk.

Both dairy farmers by trade, Megan and Chris met in Alice Springs, started working on a cattle station together and discovered a mutual fascination for camels.

The Williamses currently have 10 stockists in Victoria and said that number was growing rapidly. “The demand is definitely there — a lot of smaller shops, like speciality grocers, market the product for us,” Mrs Williams said. She said camel milk was easier to digest and may also aid health issues, such as diabetes and stomach ulcers, by strengthening immunity. Mrs Williams said those with lactose intolerance or other allergies made up a large part of the consumer market. Their farm is home to more than 50 camels and some will be accompanying the Williamses at the expo, including camel calves — a sure-fire way to keep children amused.

“We both wanted to start farming our own niche product,” Mr Williams said. “Megan did a lot of research and found camel milk had a lot of benefits and there was a huge global demand.” They produce around 450 litres of milk a week (sometimes up to 6 litres/camel/day). The couple has also used camel’s milk to make soap, lip balm and other body care products and has plans to expand into the cheese market. Visitors can watch how camel’s milk is used in a cooking demonstration in the Farmgate and Food Garden Food Court. To find out more, visit www. camelmilkvictoria.com.au and visit the Williamses (and their camels) in the Cattle Yards at site one.

A different kind of wool Long-time exhibitor at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, the Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association is back for another year. Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association has exhibited at the expo since its inception and one of its members, Jason O’Loghlin, said visitors have always been inquisitive about the different breeds. “It’s amazing the questions that we get from people,” Mr O’Loghlin said. “On Saturday and Sunday you get a huge scope of people and some of the comments are really interesting. “Most people think of Merino wool when they think of a sheep because they don’t know other breeds.” Among the breeds included at this year’s display will be Border Leicester, English Leicester, Lincoln, Perendale, Polwarth, Bond and Wiltshire Horn sheep. “Most breeds involved are older British breeds … the breeds are all very different, unique in their own way.” Strong wool breeds are commonly used for the creation of carpets and various harsher fabrics. Mr O’Loghlin said the expo was an

opportunity for people to see the sheep in their pure bred form, and after significant changes in trends in the commercial industry, it gave people the chance to consider alternative options for breeding livestock. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to promote studs and breeds … it’s such a highly visited expo.” While the internet provides extensive information, talking one-on-one with sheep breeders and seeing the animals was a much more valuable experience, Mr O’Loghlin said. “To talk to breeders and see live sheep in a display is incomparable. “The breeders are willing to talk and discuss things about sheep and their individual characteristics and why people should have them or keep them … they have a lot of knowledge and expertise.” Visit the Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association in the Strong Wool Sheep Shed at the Seymour expo.

Harnessing up some heavy horse power Before there were tractors, utes and technology to rely on, draught horses helped farmers work the land. Heritage Draught Horses treasurer Brian Pinches and members of the club will have about 12 draught horses at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The club will be on the back oval during the three-day event demonstrating above-ground work with Clydesdale and Clydesdale-cross horses. “We’re going to be doing above-ground work like super spreading, raking of hay, using sleds — like a farm ute type of thing so you can carry your hay around — things people can do on their farm,” Mr Pinches said. The club has about 35 members and 40 horses, and members will be available to answer questions about the horses and their heritage during the presentations. “The main reason we do it is to keep the heritage alive,” Mr Pinches said. “You’ve got a museum where you can see a plough, but you don’t know how it works. “Our main thing is to show people how to use their horses and how to use them on a farm.” Mr Pinches said when raising draught

horses, they had to be handled from the day they were born. Although they do not actually start heavy work until they are four years old. He said the horses don’t mature until they are at least six years old and he said he was still working on his 22-year-old horse. “The more you use them, the better they become,” Mr Pinches said.

Brian Pinches using a drop spreader in the paddock.

“If you don’t use them a lot then they don’t respond as well.” Mr Pinches said people liked to come up and have contact with the horses at events like Seymour expo. “They’re a lot more docile, they’re bigger — they weight between 800 and 1000 kilos,” he said. Mr Pinches, who began training draught horses 16 years ago, currently uses three draught horses on his farm. “I got into it through a friend,” Mr Pinches said. “Once you get the bug you go from one to two to three, it’s sort of addictive. “We actually use them for what they’re bred for.”

Australian Country Lifestyle Celebrated As the Member for Northern Victoria Region based in Seymour, I encourage everyone to attend the 2016 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo and celebrate the proud lifestyle that is country Australia. Our country lifestyle is among the top reasons people enjoy living in areas surrounding towns such as Seymour, Bendigo, Wangaratta and Shepparton. We understand the importance of connecting with the natural environment and closeknit communities. I think it is important we work together to preserve our heritage and educate others on the importance of maintaining robust rural and regional ways of living. Since starting in 1991, the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo has kept pace

with the growing interest in hobby and medium-scale farming, to showcase the latest innovative and best practices. The interest in small to medium farming practices continues to grow in our state, as Victorians and others recognise the benefits to living in the country and being more self-sustaining than our city cousins.

Traditional craft on show Artisan Olivia O’Connor will demonstrate the intricate skill of using traditional tools to create bespoke wooden rocking horses at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. This is the first time Ms O’Connor has attended the event and she will be on-site for the three days to take orders for new rocking horses, discuss restorations and sell her small wooden toys. She enjoys attending events and showing visitors the traditional hand tools that she uses as well as demonstrating the carving process.

“It is really nice to let people realise that there are still many people out there practising and making a living from traditional crafts.” Olivia O’Connor The Gippsland-based artist developed her love for natural materials such as leather and timber from her formative years growing up

on a Mornington Peninsula farm. Studies in furniture design and construction and later prop making at the National Institute of Dramatic Art led Ms O’Connor to a career in prop making and as a scenic artist for a wide variety of shows and films in Sydney and London. A highlight was crafting the saddle for London’s Royal National Theatre production of War Horse. In search of a sea change Ms O’Connor returned to regional Victoria in 2013, to the countryside and natural materials that had inspired her as a child. From her workshop and studio on a picturesque farm in the rolling hills of Berrys Creek Ms O’Connor creates her unique rocking horses, one of which will be available to view at Seymour. See Olivia O’Connor’s work at site E35.

It’s very hard to get a free lunch in the beef industry, which is why smart producers are taking notice of the benefits that come from crossbreeding with Brahmans. Recent research has shown that crossbreeding with Brahmans can boost production by between 20 and 40 per cent, depending on nutritional and stress levels. The adaptable and high performing breed can also improve lowly-heritable traits such as fertility, milking ability and longevity, putting more profits into producers’ pockets. While Brahmans are well known for their drought tolerance, exceptional foraging ability and good feed conversion, the breed can also demonstrate meat yield and eating quality attributes. Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association southern branch chairman George Merceica said Brahmans had continued to perform well in taste test competitions in 2015. After taking out the Clermont Cattlemen’s Taste Test in 2014, the breed followed up in 2015 by winning the Brisbane Royal Show 70-day grain-fed taste test competition. The association is embracing the latest

advances in genetic mapping — or genomics — to give Australian producers a jump start in selecting for profitable beef traits. The ongoing Beef Information Nucleus Project is improving the scope and accuracy of Breedplan EBVs through advances in genomics and more comprehensive collection and analysis of phenotypic data. The project is evaluating the performance of 70 Brahman sires, including six Beef CRC sires, and their expected progeny of 833 steers and 949 heifers over three years of breeding. Association general manager John Croaker said the association’s stud breeders were quick to embrace the opportunity to record financially significant traits for growth, fertility and carcase qualities. “Of the 2014 calves recorded to date, 57 per cent have at least one weight trait recorded,” Mr Croaker said. “There is also an increasing trend to record other performance traits. “Of these 2014 calves, 26 per cent have scrotal circumference records and 16 per cent of males and 13 per cent of females have carcase scan data.” Visit the Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association at Cattle Yards - 5.

‘Seymour Alternative Farming Expo’, February, 2016—PAGE 21

Local flavours on show After a successful debut at the 2015 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, chef Adrian Hensley is returning this year to whip up some delicious dishes using fresh Victorian ingredients. He will cook up a storm in the Country Kitchen with meat cuts provided by butcher Bob Dewar, who will be demonstrating how to break down carcases and prepare traditional and alternative meat cuts.

He said he always tried to incorporate Victorian produce into his cooking.

Mr Hensley said he was happy to come back to this year’s expo and said last year was a really good experience.

Mr Hensley, who has worked with alternative meats including kangaroo and rabbit, said he was eager to cook with different meat this year.

“Last year was something I hadn’t done before, he said. “It was really enjoyable to get among the crowd. “The highlight for me was doing the cook-off, which was an absolute blast, and working with Bob was really good to milk his knowledge.

Mr Hensley oversees operations at The Exchange restaurant and adjoining cafe the Bean Counter in Bendigo.

“I certainly like the challenge to be able to highlight something of local produce and put it into something contemporary.

“I’m definitely hoping to try something new this year and hopefully the suppliers can get some meat for us. “I’m also hoping to do something special with the camel milk from Kyabram, he said. Cooking classes and demonstrations will begin from 9 am each day, running through to 5 pm in the Country Kitchen in Food Court Two.

Karen Sutherland will discuss the uses of many different Australian plants, including native pepper.

Karen Sutherland from Edible Eden Design hopes to educate people about the many uses of native Australian plants.

Growing native plants to eat An educational display run by Karen Sutherland of Edible Eden Design will detail the uses and benefits of Australian bush foods and herbs. Ms Sutherland will also teach people how to grow their own edible gardens and home farms incorporating native plants. “We live in this country so it just seems strange to ignore the plants that grow here naturally, it seems ignorant,” Ms Sutherland said. “They’re an addition to food and

can be used medicinally too; they have fragrance and flavours that you absolutely cannot get from other plants.” Ms Sutherland compared the knowledge surrounding these native plants to the introduction of tomatoes to Australia, when they were sold as fruit and consumed with sugar.

“Every person in Australia would know how to use a tomato now,” she said. Ms Sutherland said the knowledge about the use of native plants was limited, so it was her goal to open people’s eyes about the plants’ many uses. “Native plants in terms of food are just not known about. “I’m trying to give people inspiration to think ‘I could grow that as a little crop’,” she said.

During talks and workshops throughout the day, Ms Sutherland will cover different topics surrounding the native plants, providing a point of difference for people who want to come to more than one session. Her topics will include the use of plants such as old man saltbush, lemon myrtle, cinnamon myrtle and native pepper in medicine, tea and cooking. She will also provide examples

of the plants at different stages of preparation, including fresh, dried and browned leaves, and will have a range of plants in pots for audiences to get an idea about how they grow. In between each session, Ms Sutherland said she was available to talk to about these plants and the potential for them. Visit Edible Eden Design in Food Court Two, Farm Gate to Food Garden.

Bob the butcher is back Not only does he have 53 years’ experience as a butcher, Bob Dewar has been head of the Butcher Shop exhibit at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo for the past 24 years and he is back this year. Mr Dewar, also known as ‘Bob the Butcher’, has experience in smallgoods sales right through to abattoir work. “I’ve gathered a lot of knowledge from a number of years — it’s nice to pass it on to others,” Mr Dewar said. Sausage making will be a special feature of Mr Dewar’s demonstrations and he

will explore preparing family favourites such as lamb, beef, pork, chicken and fish sausages as well as using unconventional meats like rabbit. While he described the demonstration as an “opportunity for an education on meat”, vegetarians can still acquire useful tips because Mr Dewar will also be demonstrating creative ways to cook with mushrooms. He will also explain how to break down carcases. Economic cooking will be the main message of his demonstration and Mr Dewar said he wanted to teach people how to get the most out of their meat,

what to look for when purchasing and the “That’s what I get out of the expos — the best substitutes. fact that we are able to teach these things.” “Meat is dear now and we can’t be as choosy as we used to be. We can’t have Trends are constant in the food world but steak every night so we have to get more at the moment, Mr Dewar is most excited innovative. about the resurgence of traditional methods such as cooking with boutique “We should be cooking more meat sauces beers. and lesser cuts of meat like lamb shanks and osso buco. “Our cooking methods have come full circle so while it seems to be the new “Bones should be boiled up to make a vogue thing to do for the younger standard stock to make our own soups,” generations, it’s only what their he said. grandmothers and great grandmothers Mr Dewar said the biggest flaw in the industry was the lack of education on how did.” Find Bob in his Butcher Shop located in to cook cheaper cuts of meat properly and how to use excess bits and trimmings. Harnessing solar energy in a battery Recent developments in solar battery technology are changing the way homes and businesses use their energy. With solar power a popular investment, homeowners and businesses can now take their investment one step further by utilising the latest in battery technology and other efficiency upgrades. “Traditionally through a solar panel system, power generation peaks around midday and what is not used at this time is automatically sold back to the grid at a low cost, whilst power usage often peaks at night where you are purchasing power from the grid at maximum cost,” EnviroShop founder and director Mick Harris said. “Through the use of battery technology and off-grid solutions you can harness the

power generated at peak times in a battery for use whenever you choose. “By taking control of your energy, you can increase your independence from energy suppliers, become immune to power outages and have ultimate control over your own power bill.

This 355kW solar power system engineered by EnviroShop for Burder Industries, Wangaratta was awarded the 2015 Clean Energy Council’s Solar Design and Installation Award.

“Solar and solar battery storage is a smart investment but it is also a big one,” Mr Harris said. “We strongly advise people looking to do their research and seek out advice from reputable companies who have proven experience in the industry.” Seymour Alternative Farming Expo visitors can add to their research through participating

in a free seminar program where EnviroShop will be presenting two seminar topics: ‘Solar for Beginners’ and ‘A Guide to Battery Storage’. The latter will include overviews of the highly anticipated Tesla Powerwall home battery system and the Enphase AC Battery.

engineering solar and battery storage solutions for both residential and commercial customers since 2004 and was recently awarded the 2015 Clean Energy Council Solar Design and Installation Award for a 355 kW solar system and transformer upgrade in Wangaratta.

EnviroShop has been

Today, the company has

evolved into more than just a solar company, also offering detailed home energy advice and assessments to make sure homes and businesses are as energy efficient as possible. Visit the EnviroShop team at sites EB81 and EB82 at the Seymour expo for all your solar needs.

Crepe rubber is shock absorbent and supportive, while leather provides a strong boot that allows feet to breathe.

The use of natural materials also means that the shoe is ‘foot formed’, meaning the shoe will mould to the shape of your foot.

Danish manufacturers design shoes with the end product in mind; the process starts with drawing around the foot. The result is a naturally wider fit that

Farm gates and gardens look complete with a piece of Gavin and Naona Stewart’s exquisite metal art. Located in the Blue Mountains the pair works together designing and constructing custom-made metal artwork. Mr Stewart has a life-long connection with metal, working in various forms from industrial applications through to the creative arts and Mrs Stewart relishes creating distinctive original designs that are both personal and resonant for her customers. “We love working in metal because it’s a natural element which is strong and durable and we enjoy creating distinctive styles which enhance our customers’ living spaces — always with an eye for detail and a quality finish,” Mr Stewart said. Customers aren’t limited in choice at Metalscape, with Mr and Mrs Stewart able to produce commercial signs and decorative elements, internal and external signs, company logos, signs incorporated into gates and fences, reflective backing

for night visibility, classic and traditional styles and contemporary designs. “In addition, we offer a choice of finishes, powder coated, rust, corten or stainless steel, and these are available in a variety of material thicknesses to suit your specific requirements,” Mr Stewart said. As part of its range of artwork, Metalscape manufactures garden metal art and custom property signs. Metal designs of pet animals, birds and plants can be purchased to adorn gardens, while custom-designed property signs can be hung on gates and fencing. “Our Gardenscape range, incorporating animal, floral, tree and custom designs, works superbly in such settings as flower and nature beds, grassed areas, garden pathways, and as unique design enhancements for water features, gazebos and swimming pool areas,” Mr Stewart said. Metalscape will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo with a range of designs on display at site numbers T40 and T43.

Looking after solar needs This year will be the year solar plus battery storage becomes truly viable, according to a 20-year veteran of the solar power industry. Sunergy Solar managing director Tony Smith said more and more people were turning to batteries to store their solar power, rather than see it exported for “next to nothing”. “For people in regional areas, battery storage can also provide back-up power in the event the grid fails, and some solutions provide a road map to full offgrid living,” Mr Smith said. “Tree changers are flocking to regional Victoria — buying weekenders or bush retreats and setting up agricultural enterprises. “Many rural properties don’t have access to mains power, leaving them reliant on generators or without electricity altogether,” he said. “For these properties, Sunergy can design and install an efficient and reliable stand-alone power system. These systems deliver clean green power for free from the sun and wind.

“If you’ve purchased a property with an existing off-grid system, we also offer upgrade services.” Sunergy Solar is attending the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to provide the latest information on everything solar, including solar plus batteries. “Whether it’s grid-connected solar, off-grid solar, solar plus batteries, solar pumps or solar gates — there are endless opportunities to run a property using renewable energy,” Mr Smith said. “We even offer an award winning reverse osmosis water desalination system, which can run direct from solar, or be hooked up to the mains. “At Sunergy we tailor our renewable energy solutions to suit individual needs. “We don’t believe in a one-sizefits-all approach because so many variables determine the needs of each business, farm or residence.” To find out more, call 1300 463 347, email info@sunergysolar.com.au or visit Sunergy at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo at site T31 for show specials on solar, storage, hot water and off-grid solutions.

Wood fires expected to be popular Fill your house with the ambience of crackling wood and glowing embers this winter with Jetmaster Heat and Glo’s range of wood fires. The company, which has been operating in Australia for about 35 years, offers a wide variety of gas and wood heaters to suit the needs of any household. Sales director Ashley Stride said he expected the company’s wood fires to be most popular among regional consumers at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. “If they’re off-the-grid, no availability of gas they (wood fires) are certainly the cheaper way to heat the home,” he said. During its fourth year visiting the expo, Jetmaster Heat and Glo will have staff on hand to assist consumers with their search for the perfect wood

heater to suit their needs. Mr Stride said the business would have about 15 models of wood fires from its three wood fire brands on display during the expo. “Being the most efficient fireplace on the market means you burn less wood and heat more area,” he said. “If you live on a farm and you’re chopping wood, it means you’re attending to the fire less. “It’s good for your hip-pocket but it is good for the environment because there’s less smoke and you’re burning less fuel.” Mr Stride said the business strived to achieve the best warranty and the most efficient

Create a classic entrance Create a rustic timber-look entrance to your property without the maintenance issues by installing a concrete fence manufactured by Post ‘N’ Rail. The decade-old business is based near Echuca and will have a selection of its products on display at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Owners Steve and Melinda Jones originally constructed retaining walls with replica-timber concrete sleepers and turned their focus to fences following requests from clients. Post ‘N’ Rail builds single, double and triple rail fences in seven different timber colours, including ironbark, red gum, ash, walnut, cedar, willow and snow gum.

“Our fences give the timber look without the timber problems,” Steve Jones. He said the fences so closely

resembled timber structures many people were surprised to learn they were concrete. The dark coloured wood grain finishes are protected with a sealer to retain the colour, while the lighter coloured fences tended to age naturally to give an authentic weathered appearance. Mr Jones said the fences wouldn’t split or rot, were termite resistant and were suitable for use in fireprone areas. Post ‘N’ Rail offers an installation service but also supplies the durable reinforced concrete fencing materials to property and home owners wishing to undertake do-it-yourself projects. Visitors to the expo will be able to see a selection of fences in all colour options, obtain information and quotes and speak to the business representatives. Post ‘N’ Rail will be at site T49.

Lightweight homes built for you Flexibility is the key for familyowned lightweight home construction specialist Swenrick Constructions. The weatherboard-style home builder operates out of Buxton but constructs its range of designs Australia-wide. Sales manager Rick Kulman said the business offered different levels of construction completion to fit with the needs of individual clients. “We can build to lock-up, we can go to advanced lock-up or we can go right through until the certificate of occupancy,” Mr Kulman said. He said he was noticing a rising trend of people electing to work with the business until the lock-up stage. “Lock-up is where the house is made weatherproof and all the structural issues are dealt with,” he said. “Then the client comes in from there either using family members who have a trade qualification or project manager and sub-contract those people themselves,” Mr Kulman said.

“But the beauty of it is that we build it so that all the structural stuff has been dealt with so they’re moving into a house that is secure.” The flexibility doesn’t stop there, with Swenrick offering a range of styles and colours to choose from, as well as the ability to apply any changes and modifications to achieve a client’s dream home. “We’re certainly not a kit or locked into modules, so whatever they want they can have and they usually do that,” Mr Kulman said. “We have a pretty extensive standard range which caters for entry level, mid level and cottage style, contemporary and even to the nth degree when a client comes in with their own architectural drawings.” As well as building new homes, Swenrick offers extensions for clients who don’t want to start from scratch. Swenrick staff will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo at sites EB64 and EB65 to assist anyone considering building their new home.

Shepparton branch manager Bryan Cummins said the team at William Adams Ag enjoyed the 2015 expo and were looking forward to returning. “From our perspective, it’s our most enjoyable field day to be honest,” Mr Cummins said. “It’s more diverse — people come from such diverse backgrounds.” The display will include around 12 pieces of gear including tractors, implements and ride-on mowers, however Mr Cummins said there would be a larger range of items for hobby farmers on display this year, such as the 25–80 hp tractors. “We found that anything with 80 hp down had the bulk of interest last year.” William Adams Ag sells tractors, ride-on mowers and implements for small and large scale farmers and provides servicing in-house and on-site. “On-site servicing is good for the smaller guys who don’t have the tractors or equipment to come out to us. “We go wherever we need to — we cover Victoria with our network.” Visit the William Adams Ag team at the Seymour expo at sites B65 and B66.

Experience and advice

Above Right: Swagman Tours takes you all over the world to see machinery and farming practices used in other countries.

Being able to discuss your stock handling needs with like-minded farmers who know their stuff is an advantage when it comes to researching sheep and cattle handling equipment. Wayne and Lynley Coffey of Combi Clamp each have 25 years farming experience on large sheep and beef properties and 15 years of promoting their own designed sheep handler, the ‘Combi Clamp’, to farmers throughout New Zealand, Australia and the UK. With this experience they can teach techniques that make each job seem easier, get sheep to co-operate, and suggest where to set up the sheep handler for maximum flow. The newly introduced ground lowering Combi Trailer has proven to be a big success with farmers Australia wide. The ease of moving and setting up

the Combi Clamp sheep handler at any site is important to the modern day farmer or contractor who has large properties or multiple blocks. The shelter from the roof protects the operator from the elements and is a big hit with existing clients. One property owner said his staff refused to work with sheep without the Combi Clamp, hence a second ground lowering trailer has been ordered. Combi Clamp’s reputation for good reliable gear extends to cattle handling as well, with the Combi Clamp auto headbail. This headbail catches the animal by itself, and also resets automatically, ready to catch the next one as it follows through — this makes it perfect for one person operation as the animal does all the work. For more information see Wayne and Lynley at site B15 at the Seymour Expo or phone 0488 619 747.

See the world with Swagman Swagman Tours has been offering rural Australians a trip of a lifetime for the past 25 years with farming tours to a variety of interesting destinations worldwide, as well as throughout Australia. The purpose of these tours is to see iconic sights the destinations have to offer as well as getting off the beaten track. Usually in remote-rural areas, travellers will observe, meet with and learn how the locals undertake their agricultural pursuits, which are often very different to what we are used to in Australia. These tours contain a wellbalanced mix of sightseeing and farming, ensuring all passengers enjoy their experience. The itineraries also include technical visits to machinery and farm implement

manufacturers to see and learn about production of their equipment. Some of the big names include John Deere, Case IH, JCB, Massey Ferguson and New Holland. Other technical visits include wineries, field days, stock auctions, research institutions and agricultural shows. Visits to local farms, often family owned and operated, are also incorporated into the itinerary including dairy farms, indigenous sheep and cattle, large scale cropping enterprises and commercial beef feedlots. For 2016, Swagman has

scheduled farming tours to China, South Africa, Northern USA and Canada including the Calgary Stampede, the United Kingdom, Kimberley and Top End, the US coast to coast from San Francisco to New York, New Zealand’s north and south Islands, and due to its popularity in 2015, the West Australian Wheatfields and Wildflowers tour along the Nullarbor Plain is returning. Back by demand this year is Swagman’s camping tours to the Kimberley, Kakadu, the Red Centre and the Birdsville Races, the perfect opportunity for Australians to explore the sights in their own backyard. Swagman Tours encourages those who are interested to drop in and say hello at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo at site T19.

Powering up off grid Home battery storage specialists Off-Grid Energy are keeping the world green and clean with their niche products. Off-Grid Energy is one of the only companies in Australia specialising in battery storage for homes, which they customise to the need of each client. “A lot of solar companies who do normal grid-connected solar will sometimes say that they do battery storage on the side, but we’re one of the only companies that specialise in battery storage because it’s a lot more complex,” customer service and marketing officer

Emily McMahon said. “Every one of our systems is tailored for the specific usage of the customer — every single system is different.” Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, which the business has been attending for the past five years, is one of the most successful and productive events it attends.

Off-Grid Energy will be at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to answer questions about their niche product range.

Systems for wastewater Fuji Clean, manufacturers of domestic wastewater treatment systems, will be at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The Fuji Clean wastewater treatment system is a simple, highly developed single tank system designed to treat all household wastewater from the kitchen, bathroom, toilet and laundry areas of homes in non-sewered areas. The Fuji Clean wastewater treatment system was introduced for use in nonsewered areas in Australia in April 2010 and approved for sale in Victoria in November 2011. Fuji Clean said its aerated wastewater treatment system is the most advanced on the Australian market, delivering reliable and robust performance at

an affordable price. In its 50-year history, a large team of development scientists have refined the original Fuji Clean system to produce the compact system now available in Australia. The system uses both naturally occurring digestive processes with highly developed bacterial media and efficient sludge return that doesn’t rely on multiple components or less proven methods of treatment. More than two million systems are installed on several continents around the world. See Fuji Clean at expo site C4.

Easy livestock handling with VTR Violet Town Rural has the solution to all livestock handling needs.

Violet Town Rural will display the Racewell sheep handler at Seymour.

From Racewell sheep handlers and auto drafters to make sheep handling a low-stress operation through to cattle crushes, ramps and horse yards, VTR can assist. Owner Jarrod Doidge said in the past few years the business had introduced sheep farmers in northern and eastern Victoria to a more stream lined management process with access to world leading stock handling technology. This technology has the capacity to manage and market sheep on their individual worth with complete ease and accuracy allowing farmers to make more informed breeding and selection decisions whilst monitoring individual management growth, nutrition, health and product quality.

VTR is the exclusive distributor of the Racewell sheep handler manufactured in New Zealand by Te Pari products. “This machine makes the job so much easier and more efficient for everything from weighing, drafting, crutching, drenching, administering vaccines and tagging stock,” Mr Doidge said. “The machine is easy to use and also easy on the sheep and we have found them to be incredibly reliable.” This high quality livestock handler can easily integrate with an EID reader, allowing fully automatic drafting by weight or EID, with data easily recorded, downloaded, and managed. The Racewell handler can even talk wirelessly to the Te Pari auto drench gun and deliver the exact dose every time to every sheep based on the individual animal’s weight.

The handler has adjustable sensors that catch the stock in the preferred position depending on animal size and task. VTR will showcase its new and exclusive range of sheep and cattle yards at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, including sheep yards, V-drafts, curved races and sheep loading ramps along with cattle yards including three new models of cattle crush and a new force tub, panels and gates as well as a new ramp with the option of an added side walk. All these products are Australian made using Australian steel to provide consistency of quality and strength, which Mr Doidge said made them superior to some imported products. See the Violet Town Rural team at site B55–58 and B61–64 and keep an eye out for the new web site vtr.net.au

Automatic gates for all needs Australian-made Sun-Power auto gates are supporting Australian jobs. Martin Ryan of Sun-Power auto gates said the products were strong, tough and reliable, making them the right product for properties Australia-wide including rural properties, transport depots, private homes, horse, cattle and alpaca studs, dairy farms, vineyards and warehouses. Sun-Power Australian Made XP and XP-R auto-gate operators are available in solar or 240 volt kits. The gates have powerful 12

volt motors with 100 per cent duty cycle and feature zinc plated steel chassis and gears. The Sun-Power auto gate DIY kits include a gate operator, an inbuilt logic controller, arm assembly and gate bracket, battery, radio, receiver and antenna, three remote controls, a 12 watt solar panel and bracket or 240 volt transformer. A free bonus offer for every kit valued at $400 or more includes two extra remote controls, bringing the total up to five, two wireless key pads or one wireless push button, steel mounting plates — one with the single kit and two with the double kit.

Mr Ryan said buying an auto-gate opener was similar to buying a car; you should compare the various models in reasonable detail to make an informed decision. Some of the factors buyers should consider include whether the product is Australian made, the quality of equipment, performance and reliability, competitive price, technical support, spare parts availability, detailed manual, and after-sales service. Visit Sun-Power auto gates at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo at sites B44 and B45.

Help for hobby farmers Family-owned business FarmTech will cater for hobby farmers at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

FarmTech’s Brad Modra said the display would cater for smaller hobby farms.

FarmTech has attended the Seymour expo for the past 10 years and Mr Modra said while the event was aimed at smaller hobby farmers, he was noticing a rise in the number of full-time and professional farmers attending.

FarmTech sales and finance manager Brad Modra said the company, which had manufactured its “Real farmers are starting to go, it definitely works products in Wodonga since 1975, specialised in out well for us,” he said. gear for the livestock industry including tillage, Despite this growing trend, Mr Modra said feeding, feed-mixing and spreading equipment, FarmTech would still focus on showing its smaller forage harvesters and bale-wrapping equipment. machinery for hobby farmers who attend the expo. “We cover a wide-range of gear, everything from sowing to feed out,” Mr Modra said. “It’s very important to our business to get our equipment out at these events and meet with “At Seymour, we will be focusing more on our tillage and feeding and small spreading equipment. people,” he said. Easy to use machine

Energy efficient solutions

A machine made by Metalform Tow and Farm has the ability to reduce a farmer’s urea usage by up to 45 per cent. Tow and Farm’s Australian sales manager Neil Parker said the Tow and Fert machine came in three sizes, from 1000 litres up to 4000 litres and reduced the amount of urea used by administering it as a liquid. “It also has the ability to put out fine products like lime,” Mr Parker said. “A typical farmer would put it out as dry and the wind would get a hold of it and fertilise the neighbour’s property, but with our machine they can put it out as liquid.” So far Mr Parker said he had only received positive reception from farmer’s using the business’ machines, especially in terms of fertiliser savings and reduction of nitrogen reaching the waterways. “The biggest thing about these machines is that they’re easy to use but that it saves the farmer time,” he said. Mr Parker will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo where he said he expected a lot of the company’s lifestyle machines, including the

tow behind mower and new manure collectors, to be popular. “These (manure collectors) are a sweeper, so they hook up behind the quad bike and they travel from walking pace to as fast as they want to go, and it cleans an acre paddock in 15 (minutes) where doing it with a wheel barrow and shovel could take four hours,” Mr Parker said. He encouraged farmers to take their property details to the Seymour expo where he would be able to discuss which machine would suit their farm size and type to make the best cost savings. Metalform Tow and Farm also offers finance and on-farm demonstrations for its range of machinery. Save time on the farm by visiting Metalform Tow and Farm’s display at the Seymour expo at site number B68.

Glynncorp Electrical will be at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo to advise on sustainable energy management and energy efficient solutions for farm, home and business. Off-grid solar power systems are not connected to the electricity supply grid and individual systems are formulated to meet the demands of the property. This is achieved by designing the system to cover all conceivable uses of power for homes, sheds and pumping with a battery back-up system in place to store the renewable energy and a generator on automatic standby for extreme loads, dull days and if power is required at night. Another option is hydrogen fuel cell technology which is considered a clean alternative. Hydrogen is produced on site and can be stored long or short term and converted to electricity when required with zero pollution. Fuel cells have almost no

moving parts and generate power via an electrochemical process; therefore they are inherently reliable and quiet. Hydrogen technology offers ease of use and on-site clean power generation, creating a low-carbon environment for a sustainable future. Solar pumping is increasing in popularity and suits irrigation reticulation, centre pivot irrigation, lateral irrigators including three-phase flood/surface irrigation pumping, subsurface irrigation and sprinklers. The installation of solar power photovoltaic (PV) modules to supply motors/pumps can be designed for new or retro fitted to existing installations. See Glynncorp Electrical at site T23 to T25.

ARE YOU FIRE READY? Planning to survive a bushfire We’ve seen fires across the country this summer. They’ve destroyed homes and buildings, burnt out thousands of hectares of farmland and crown land, killed thousands of animals demolished hundreds of kilometres of fencing, disrupted communities and put huge demands on volunteer and paid firefighters and their families. And the greatest price of all. They’ve also claimed the lives of several Australians. Fire is part of the Australian story but fires don’t have to result in death. We can plan to live. Victorian Fire agencies have run education programs for at least 30 years. Community Fireguard, FireReady Victoria, Bushfire Workshops etc are targeted at being safe from bushfires and many Victorians have taken advantage of these programs to develop plans that will minimise the impact of fires on their property and protect the lives of their families. CFA has a wealth of information which can be downloaded from the CFA website cfa. vic.gov.au There are also social media app’s and the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (1800 240 667) which can provide information on planning and preparing to be safe this summer. Preparing your house is only half the story. The important half is protecting your family’s lives and that means understanding your personal risks. Fire Danger Ratings tell us how bad a fire would be if one started. An important part of your survival plan should be to determine when it’s safe to stay and actively defend your property and when you should leave. CFA recommends that you should leave early, the night before or early morning on all Code Red days and that you should consider leaving on the morning of Extreme or Severe days. Take a few minutes to read the Fire Danger Rating descriptors. Understand what they mean and what you should do and develop a plan to keep your family safe.

Home ďŹ res can occur at any time of the year ‌ and home ďŹ res too often result in lives lost! A horriďŹ c and often overlooked statistic is that we lose more lives in home ďŹ res than we do in bush ďŹ res yet we often fail to take the most basic steps to reduce the risk of dying in a house ďŹ re. Every house must have a working smoke alarm because working smoke alarms save lives. A working smoke alarm is like having a super sensitive nose snifďŹ ng the air, searching for the slightest trace of smoke and ever ready to noisily wake you and inform you of the smoke’s presence. In waking us up and warning of a ďŹ re in the house the smoke alarm gives us precious seconds to get the family out

Help for organic farming manufacture a product to suit the individual client.” The business manufactures a standard range, which goes into viticulture and orchards, but Mr Stray said he had recognised an enormous need for purpose-built equipment, which the business now prides itself on. At the Seymour Expo, Mr Stray said he planned to have a range of products on display with staff readily available to discuss any requirements for any potential farmers or clients attending that may have a specific requirement for a machine to do something extra. “We’ve been there (Seymour expo) a very long time and we’ve supplied equipment into every source of agriculture and now we’re entering into commercial areas where we’re looking after a lot of other applications,” Mr Stray said. Seymour Rural Equipment is recognised Australia wide and supplies machines all over the country including Perth, Cairns, and the Northern Territory. Visit Seymour Rural Equipment at sites B74 and B75 at the Seymour expo for a chat about the endless possibilities in designing a machine to suit your needs.

Colin and Bev Stray are no strangers to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, the event founders will return this year not as organisers but as exhibitors with their business Seymour Rural Equipment.

Seymour Rural Equipment’s K-Form Spreader is just one of the many machines the business manufactures.

The agricultural machinery manufacturing business builds a range of products to suit individual clients’ needs, including conveyors, grain shifters, truck mounted and trailing spreaders, bulk conveyor trailers and potato handling equipment. Mr Stray said the expo would allow the business to focus on the hobby-farmer market and demonstrate any niche machines they require for the application of organic, manure and compost products including mulches. “Over the years, traditionally our business has been manufacturing machines to handle the chemical type fertiliser, and we’ve seen the need for developing equipment to suit the latest trend, which I guess is organic and compost, adding mulches to various crops and horticulture,” Mr Stray said. “Consequently we now work one-on-one with every client and have the ability to design and

The business has been operating for 18 years from depots in Lilydale and Healesville and focuses on services and repairs to all outdoor power equipment, and has a pick-up and delivery service. New owners Peter and Suzanne Sommers have been running the business since August last year with many years of machinery expertise. Mr Sommers has been in the machinery business all his life and has experience ranging from large machinery to small.

Mr Sommers said Ride on Mower Sales’ clients had the business’ complete support following any purchases.

The couple ran a heavy and large machinery service business for 25 years before they took over Ride on Mower Sales from a friend in 2015. “We have come into the business to develop a premium outdoor power equipment business within our area, servicing reasonably local clients,” Mr Sommers said. Focusing on the individual needs of clients at a local and personal level is important to Mr Sommers who said it was a waste of money for a customer to buy something that does not suit their needs.

“We focus to maintain their property safely and easily in the most practical way,” he said. “(They) have total support from us as the dealer and the same support from the manufacturer.”

The business’ new owners and staff will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo showcasing its large range of products including chainsaws, brush cutters and log splitters.

Mr Sommers said interaction and customer satisfaction was paramount to his business, which strived to satisfy customer needs. The pair also runs a houseboat hire business in Howqua. Contact Peter and Suzanne on 0408 714 052 for further information or visit them at sites T63 and T64 at the Seymour expo.

Decade of support for expo Heritage Tanks is celebrating 10 years as a major sponsor of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The Australian-based family-owned manufacturer of rural, domestic and commercial rainwater tanks is a long-time supporter of the expo and is excited to return to Seymour once again. The event is a fantastic opportunity to see new developments, innovations and implements firsthand.

This gutter enables up to 100 per cent of the rainfall from the tank roof to be collected, minimising erosion from water run-off. In basic terms, in a 500 mm rainfall area you can save about a quarter of the capacity from the 2.3 m-high range of tanks. This equates to at least one truckload of water saved to get property owners through the drier months.

You won’t be limited for choice with Heritage Tanks’ wide range of 100 per cent Australian-made products on display at the expo.

Added benefits of choosing a Heritage Tank is the peace of mind in its longevity — with 1 mm Bluescope steel walls and a 0.75 mm extruded solid film liner — along with a range of sizes offered from 55 000 litres to 375 000 litres in the domestic market.

Heritage Tanks’ staff will be on hand to take visitors through the display and discuss which tank best suits their needs.

The hard-wearing tanks are designed to withstand the harsh Australian landscape and its elements without their durability being compromised.

A range of optional extras are also available for purchase with a new Heritage Tank, including the only True Gutter for its tanks.

Visit the Heritage Tanks display at sites B90 to B92, B99 and B100 at the Seymour expo to chat to one of its experienced staff members.

Ferrari at expo Innovative Ferrari tractors, sold by Konigs Shepparton, will be on display at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Manufactured in Italy and distributed by Mirco Brothers Machinery in Minto, NSW, the tractors have a low centre of gravity, which offers a high level of safety when working on steep, hilly country and across slopes of up to 45 degrees. Mirco Brothers Machinery sales manager Peter Murray said the four-wheel drive models were designed for horticulture and viticulture and, despite being a low profile tractor, retained good ground clearance. “Their traction comes from a true fourwheel drive system, which is distinct from wheel assist — hence giving them better

Other features include dual-steer models that allow for a tighter turning radius and the option of low profile cabins, which are airconditioned and pressurised, and have been designed for working under trellises in vineyards and hot-houses. The low-profile cabin heights start from 1.69 m from the ground and offer excellent visibility. A conventional cabin is also available. Three models are available in the Vega range, the Vega 75 (70 hp), Vega 85 (84 hp) and the Vega 95 (92 hp) and all Ferrari models are powered by DaimlerBenz VM diesel engines, which meet the new European emission regulations. 10 year warranty gives peace of mind Neil Beer Seymour is offering a 10-year extended warranty on all new vehicles sold by the prominent car dealership at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Dealer principal Greg Beer said the addition of Subaru and Nissan franchises in June 2015 had expanded the options for new and existing customers of the long-established Holden and Mitsubishi dealership, which has been operating in Seymour since 1980. He said an extensive range of sports utility vehicles and dual cabs including the popular Holden Colorado, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara will be on display at the expo.

Visitors to the site will have the opportunity to inspect the vehicles, talk to the experienced sales staff, discuss finance options and collect brochures to take home. Mr Beer said the business has had a good response to its presence at the expo and last year sold 10 new vehicles during the event. And with the number of visitors coming through the gates Mr Beer said the expo provided a great opportunity to engage with new clients who might be considering a new or used car purchase in the near future.

“We meet people at the expo who come in three or six months later and buy a new car.” Neil Beer A special offer exclusive to the expo is an extended 10-year warranty, in addition to the new car factory warranty, backed by Neil Beer Seymour on all new vehicles sold at the event. “The extended warranty gives customers peace of mind,” Mr Beer said. Neil Beer Seymour has a staff complement of 50 comprising administration, sales, service and spare parts personnel with two well-appointed workshops that provide important back-up service.
