Small changes, same great expo Round up family and friends and put on a sunhat — the 25th Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is coming up and is sure to delight an expected 25 000 visitors with more than 500 exhibits and plenty of attractions to educate and entertain the whole family. With a diverse assortment of quirky exhibits, captivating demonstrations and entertaining activities, visitors will be entertained, engaged and exposed to new ideas and enterprises. From sheep and cattle to alpacas and poultry, there will be no shortage of animals, which are always popular among farmers and young children at the expo. “There’s a great variety — it’s not all one style of animal to see,” Seymour Alternative Farming Expo exhibitor co-ordinator Fiona Smolenaars said. An impressive list of sheep and cattle breeds — including Dorper sheep and Red Poll, Red Angus and Highland cattle — will interest both established and new farmers. “People will get a chance to look at the huge variety of cattle and sheep. They will get to see in real life what people can have on their farm or their property,” Ms Smolenaars said.

A dedicated Kids’ Zone will keep children entertained with activities like a petting zoo, the snake man and jumping castle. With the temperature known to skyrocket in Seymour during February, the expo will open an hour earlier than usual, at 8 am, giving visitors the option to beat the heat and start exploring what is on offer more comfortably. Not only will the expo see a time change this year, but its site layout has been altered slightly to provide more of a “supermarket aisle shopping feel”, enhancing access for the public and exposure for the exhibitor Ms Smolenaars said. “We have made enhancements to the site based on exhibitor feedback and with an aim to build a broader visitor appeal and improve pedestrian flow past all sites,” she said. Quality and variety of food is always essential for a good day out and this year’s expo will not disappoint with a specially designed culinary precinct which includes three food courts, the informative and inspiring Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen and the fresh tastes of the Farmers’ Market all in one place. Ms Smolenaars said the expo was not just for those involved in agriculture or farming but for anyone seeking an enjoyable, family day out.

Fancy fowls in feathered finery The Seymour Poultry club’s sale shed is perhaps one of the coolest places to be at the Seymour Expo.

Over the years the club has catered for summer weather by using two large fans attached to misters to keep the chooks, and any visitors, comfortable. Club secretary Ross Green said during the three-day event the club had about 1000 birds spread between 200 and 500 pens. “We have a very diverse range and most of the fowls we have there are pure-bred poultry,” Mr Green said. A single pen at the expo generally holds two hens and a rooster, however Mr Green said buyers often left the rooster behind.

“That’s been a big trend over the years,” Mr Green said. “If they want the pen they take the two girls and leave the big boy behind.” Mr Green said the club was trying to promote pure-bred poultry by getting buyers to purchase a breed, rather than a colour. “What we trying to do is get people away from the Isa brown, or the black chook, or the white chook or the red chook and get them onto a breed,” he said. Mr Green suggested buying breeds

such as the Rhode Island Red, or the Plymouth Rock, a large grey and white banded chook. The club is expecting their main customers at the expo to be hobby farmers wanting to purchase chooks to lay eggs in their backyard. Mr Green said chook buyers generally focused on appearances, with most people wanting to buy a “pretty looking chook”. The Seymour Poultry Club and its many chooks can be found in the Poultry Shed.

And they’re racing! Man’s best friend will demonstrate speed, skill and obedience during the canine disc and flyball competitions at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Australian Flyball Association Victorian representative Rodney Gooch said the Seymour flyball event was a lead-up to the Royal Canberra Show and was expected to attract up to 14 teams of six dogs. Mr Gooch said flyball was an exciting spectator event and was based on activities dogs naturally loved, including running, jumping and retrieving objects. He said flyball relay was a canine team sport that involved two teams of four dogs racing a 15.5 m course, with each dog jumping over four hurdles before triggering the flybox peddle to retrieve a ball and return to the start/finish line before their dog teammate takes off and completes the same course. “There is a run-off area behind the start/finish line and the idea is to start your dog at a certain distance so by the time they cross the start line they are running at top speed,” Mr Gooch said. As soon as the nose of one dog in a team crosses the finish line the next dog can start and Mr Gooch said these changeovers were

recorded electronically as the dogs were running so fast it was difficult to determine with the naked eye if a dog crossed the line early. He said individual dogs in highly trained teams were able to cross the start/finish line at precisely the same time and while dogs of all breeds competed, it was the working dogs, including kelpies and border collies, that excelled. The canine disc is a growing sport nationally and involves teams of a handler and dog tossing and fetching a disc over certain distances. Mr Gooch said there were also games, time trials and a freestyle component where dogs performed choreographed moves and tricks to music. Canine disc was a demonstration event at the 2015 expo and is expected to draw 15 to 20 teams in its first year as a competitive event. The events will be staged on the main oval, with flyball running for most of the day on Saturday, February 20, and canine disc on Sunday, February 21.

Tiny houses, big results Living big might be the goal for some, but for Rob Scott downsizing is the way to a happier life. “I’m promoting being empowered — the whole movement is about downsizing so you don’t have all that materialistic stuff that’s a burden,” Mr Scott said. Mr Scott’s tiny houses, known as studio trucks, are built on the back of old trucks from the 1950s and 1960s from his farm property Hollyburton at Clarkefield. For the first time at the expo, Mr Scott will team up with qualified carpenters and Dutch student, Joep Pennartz, giving advice on tiny house construction and will physically build one during the three days. After identifying depression among farmers as a common issue, Mr Pennartz embarked on his enterprise program called Shacky. By offering these studio trucks for bed and breakfast accommodation on their farms, farmers can access the means for combating the illness — income and socialisation. Mr Scott said tiny house living could bring unexpected benefits such as more community engagement. “If you can build your own house, grow your own food, entertain yourself and unplug from the commercialism, you end up taking back your life.

Mr Scott received orders for the tiny houses last year and said he had a waiting list for this year. While he appreciated the interest, he is not building for business. “It’s nice to keep it in the creative, playful, uplifting zone, than turn it into the nine-to-five zone otherwise the heart and soul part goes out of it and it becomes a business.” While the adorable abodes resemble cubby houses, they are practically liveable and, as Mr Scott reiterated, they have many uses, from home office to teenage pad. Mr Scott built his first one in 2008 out of necessity as an extra bedroom for one of his three children. “I had an old truck in the paddock (and it) gave me the idea to build something on the back of the truck.” Studio trucks are roadworthy but not for everyday travel, so Mr Scott builds smaller versions, or “doll houses”, which are more suitable for travel as they can be attached to trailers. While they are small — 2.4 m wide and around 9 m long — Mr Scott believes studio trucks are cosy, not suffocating. “I call them buildings that hug you,” he said. This downto-earth session will focus on simple, practical tests that will help you get to know the soils on your property. All you need is a bucket, a spade and a willingness to get your hands dirty. There will be soil samples to look at, information about the challenges and limitations of different soil types, and advice on how to prevent and repair eroded areas. Noon: Bush herbs for pleasure and profit Amazing varieties of edible and fragrant native plants thrive in Victoria but most are still unknown to foodies, farmers and gardeners. Bush herbs, as they are known, include lemon and cinnamon myrtles, native pepper, and native thymes and mint. Many offer potential as niche farm enterprises. There will be samples to smell and taste, ideas about value adding to maximise crop returns, and information about growing requirements,

Improving water quality, encouraging native fish and frogs, and restoring aquatic habitat and streamside biodiversity to encourage birds and other helpful predators are just some of the benefits. If you are already tackling weeds, restoring native vegetation, and excluding or limiting stock access — take a bow. Landholders may be eligible for financial incentives to assist with works such as fencing, off-stream watering and purchase of native plants. Jim Castles is the riparian and river channel manager at Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority. 2 pm: Getting through the dry times Many landholders are wondering if they have sufficient feed and water to see their livestock through until the autumn break. Brad Costin and Racquel Waller will explain how to calculate the amount of feed in your paddock, how much water

is in your dam, and how to allow for evaporation. Then, based on the energy and water requirements of horses, sheep and cattle, you will be able to work out how long your feed and water will last, and how much fodder you might need to buy in. We all know how important it is to have a bushfire plan for your family and pets, but what about your horses and livestock? Dr Lee Manning says inadequate planning for the management and welfare of animals in emergencies can result in last-minute decisions — with dangerous or fatal consequences. You may need alternative plans to accommodate the ‘stay or go’ scenarios. Dr Manning will discuss evacuation and refuges, how to help animals survive if they cannot be evacuated and how animals behave in a fire. Family friendly animal fun The number and types of animals and birds within Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm display will delight visitors to Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Calves, piglets, lambs, rabbits, goats, hens, geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, fantail pigeons and rainbow lorikeets are part of the interactive show. Owners Darryl and Denise Sheridan started their enterprise about 16 years ago and have gradually built up an extensive collection of farmyard birds and animals that number in the hundreds. Mr Sheridan said he takes his mobile animal farm all over Victoria and into southern NSW, giving children and families the opportunity to see animals closeup as well as watch sheep being hand shorn, grain crushed and wool spinning. Children are invited to pat and brush the animals as well as feed them. “Our animals are used to being handled, they are very quiet,” Mr Sheridan said.

He said the animal farm was designed to be informative with spectators able to ask questions and learn about the various animal breeds and their unique characteristics. The mobile animal farm has a range of props including trailers decorated as a log cabin hut, rusty tin shed, horse stable and an old hay wagon that form the backdrops for the show. During the three days of the Seymour expo Mr Sheridan will hand shear one of his woolly sheep and spin the wool to demonstrate its place in the production of clothing. He also holds up eggs from geese, turkeys, pigeons and hens and gives a series of clues for the audience to guess which bird they were laid by. The animal farm is a key feature of the newly created Kids’ Zone at the expo.

Allan Burnett from Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia will teach people about the characteristics and behaviours of reptiles.

A first-aid presentation will cover how to treat a snake-bite and snakebite kits will be available to purchase.

Get up close and personal with snakes A dozen different species of reptiles, including five of the world’s top 10 most venomous snakes, will be used to educate audiences at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Reptile specialist and owner of Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia, Allan Burnett, will hold 15-minute educational presentations every half hour during the three-day event. “I will cover characteristics and behaviours of reptiles, we will go through some techniques and tips to avoid bites, and I’ll do a first-aid presentation,” he said. Mr Burnett said it was vital for Australians to be aware of snakes and how to treat their bites. “We have 40 per cent of the world’s most venomous snakes, including in Tasmania, which only has three species,” Mr Burnett said. “In Victoria we have 28 different varieties of snakes, and 27 of those are venomous.” Mr Burnett worked as an intensive care paramedic for 20 years, but made a career move to reptile education after befriending a snake expert before his death.

“I decided to get off the front line and got into education,” Mr Burnett said. “Prevention is better than cure. “In Australia we are taught to swim in between the flags and shut the gate of the pool, but you do not get a lot of advertising about what to do if you come across a snake. “That’s my mission impossible, to keep everybody safe.” The 15-minute reptile presentations will begin with an introduction to pythons and lizards, and the opportunity to touch the tail of one of them. Mr Burnett said it was important to teach people, including children, not to touch these animals in the wild but to allow them to get their curiosity out of the way in a controlled environment. The Reptile Awareness Display of Australia will be at site E47 near the new Kids’ Zone.

11 am: Powerful news — the latest on solar batteries Solar batteries and storage are a hot topic at the moment, with the technology becoming more reliable, efficient and affordable, and a number of big players moving into the solar battery market. Karl Edmonson from EnviroGroup will present an overview of the better battery systems and how they work. Sizes and power outputs, compatibility with your current solar power set-up, single and three-phase power, levels of blackout protection and capacity to go off-grid will all be covered. Karl Edmonson is the manager of solar battery design at EnviroGroup. Noon: Helping farmers to be climate smart As farmers are well aware, climate change will bring both risks and opportunities for agribusiness in the Goulburn Valley. The Goulburn Broken Greenhouse Alliance in partnership with Deakin University is running a project to map future impacts of climate change, including rainfall and temperature changes. It is producing 17 models of key regional commodities to indicate the shifts in their productive areas over time. These digital maps, in 5 km square grids, enable landholders to source relevant data. The project aims to support agribusiness and local governments to adapt and take advantage of climate change. Expo visitors will be among the first to hear the project findings. Thomas Brown is the executive officer and Marisa O’Halloran is a project officer for the Goulburn Broken Greenhouse Alliance. Dr Robert Faggian is the associate professor of climate change adaptation at Deakin University’s Centre for Regional and Rural Futures. 1 pm: A nine-star house done dirt cheap Yes, you can build an eight or nine-star house — and it definitely won’t cost the earth, according to Tim Adams of F2 Design. Knowledge, not money, is the key to passive, energy-efficient design. Tim will discuss materials, orientation, the issues of heating and cooling, thermal mass, the best ratios of glass windows to floor area, and how solar appliances can be integrated into design solutions. He will also share his experiences designing and building his own house with no bills on the Surf Coast. One of his designs won the 10 Star Challenge for the Builders and Designers Association in 2012. Tim Adams is the principal at F2 Design, BDAV past president and current chair of BDAV sustainability hub.

Jams, sauces, fruit leathers, tomato paste, bottling, sun and oven drying, and fruit bottling without a Fowlers kit will be discussed. You will also hear how excess produce can be turned into fundraisers, and how community groups are harvesting and preserving excess produce. Noela MacLeod is a member of honour, and past state and national president of the Country Women’s Association. 2 pm: Will it rain this autumn? It is the golden question on everyone’s lips, but Dale Grey stresses you can’t exactly predict these things. As well as looking into his foggy crystal ball for answers, Mr Grey will discuss the factors that influence our past, recent and future weather, including the Pacific and Indian Oceans. He will also explain climate variability, El Nino and La Nina, and what the various autumn and winter rainfall predictions from local and international sources are telling us. Dale Grey is a seasonal risk agronomist with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources and writes the farmer newsletter Fast Break.

All about alpacas Australia has one of the world’s largest alpaca herds, second only to the country of origin, Peru, and a selection of the unique animals will be showcased at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The Victorian central region of the Australian Alpaca Association will host a large marquee filled with pens of alpacas, stands from 11 individual breeders, alpaca fleeces, yarns, felted garments and toys. Display convenor Kaz Gaisford said alpacas were ideal livestock for small acreages as they required minimal care and their soft pads didn’t compact the earth. They also deterred predators and were extremely protective of other animals within their environment including lambs, goats and chickens.

The organisation exhibits at the expo each year and draws large crowds of people, from who simply wish to see an alpaca close-up to those contemplating starting a small breeding program. “We also have people come through who have a few acres and just wish to have a couple of lawnmowers to keep the grass down and the place tidy,” Ms Gaisford said. Alpacas were also popular as pets. Ms Gaisford said the first of the present wave of alpacas came into Australia about 25 years ago and were now highly sought-after by breeders from China, United Kingdom and Europe to improve the bloodlines of their herds. Visitors to the alpaca marquee will have the opportunity to speak with experienced alpaca breeders, learn about care requirements and admire the animals. Milking a growing demand Camel milk is not an item found in the refrigerator section at large supermarkets but at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo there will be plenty of it to go around. Megan and Chris Williams milk camels on their farm in Kyabram and will be back for their second time at Seymour to educate visitors about the product.

Mrs Williams said they were currently the biggest camel milking operation in Australia and, as far as they knew, the only suppliers of camel milk in Victoria.

Camel milk is high in vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and iron, and contains 30 per cent less fat and 40 per cent less lactose than cow’s milk.

Both dairy farmers by trade, Megan and Chris met in Alice Springs, started working on a cattle station together and discovered a mutual fascination for camels.

The Williamses currently have 10 stockists in Victoria and said that number was growing rapidly. “The demand is definitely there — a lot of smaller shops, like speciality grocers, market the product for us,” Mrs Williams said. She said camel milk was easier to digest and may also aid health issues, such as diabetes and stomach ulcers, by strengthening immunity. Mrs Williams said those with lactose intolerance or other allergies made up a large part of the consumer market. Their farm is home to more than 50 camels and some will be accompanying the Williamses at the expo, including camel calves — a sure-fire way to keep children amused.

“We both wanted to start farming our own niche product,” Mr Williams said. “Megan did a lot of research and found camel milk had a lot of benefits and there was a huge global demand.” They produce around 450 litres of milk a week (sometimes up to 6 litres/camel/day). The couple has also used camel’s milk to make soap, lip balm and other body care products and has plans to expand into the cheese market. Visitors can watch how camel’s milk is used in a cooking demonstration in the Farmgate and Food Garden Food Court. A different kind of wool Long-time exhibitor at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, the Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association is back for another year. Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association has exhibited at the expo since its inception and one of its members, Jason O’Loghlin, said visitors have always been inquisitive about the different breeds. “It’s amazing the questions that we get from people,” Mr O’Loghlin said. “On Saturday and Sunday you get a huge scope of people and some of the comments are really interesting. “Most people think of Merino wool when they think of a sheep because they don’t know other breeds.” Among the breeds included at this year’s display will be Border Leicester, English Leicester, Lincoln, Perendale, Polwarth, Bond and Wiltshire Horn sheep. “Most breeds involved are older British breeds … the breeds are all very different, unique in their own way.” Strong wool breeds are commonly used for the creation of carpets and various harsher fabrics. Mr O’Loghlin said the expo was an

opportunity for people to see the sheep in their pure bred form, and after significant changes in trends in the commercial industry, it gave people the chance to consider alternative options for breeding livestock. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to promote studs and breeds … it’s such a highly visited expo.” While the internet provides extensive information, talking one-on-one with sheep breeders and seeing the animals was a much more valuable experience, Mr O’Loghlin said. “To talk to breeders and see live sheep in a display is incomparable. “The breeders are willing to talk and discuss things about sheep and their individual characteristics and why people should have them or keep them … they have a lot of knowledge and expertise.” Visit the Strong Wool Sheep Breeders Association in the Strong Wool Sheep Shed at the Seymour expo.

Harnessing up some heavy horse power Before there were tractors, utes and technology to rely on, draught horses helped farmers work the land. Heritage Draught Horses treasurer Brian Pinches and members of the club will have about 12 draught horses at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The club will be on the back oval during the three-day event demonstrating above-ground work with Clydesdale and Clydesdale-cross horses. “We’re going to be doing above-ground work like super spreading, raking of hay, using sleds — like a farm ute type of thing so you can carry your hay around — things people can do on their farm,” Mr Pinches said. The club has about 35 members and 40 horses, and members will be available to answer questions about the horses and their heritage during the presentations. “The main reason we do it is to keep the heritage alive,” Mr Pinches said. “You’ve got a museum where you can see a plough, but you don’t know how it works. “Our main thing is to show people how to use their horses and how to use them on a farm.” Mr Pinches said when raising draught

horses, they had to be handled from the day they were born. Although they do not actually start heavy work until they are four years old. He said the horses don’t mature until they are at least six years old and he said he was still working on his 22-year-old horse. “The more you use them, the better they become,” Mr Pinches said.

“If you don’t use them a lot then they don’t respond as well.” Mr Pinches said people liked to come up and have contact with the horses at events like Seymour expo. “They’re a lot more docile, they’re bigger — they weight between 800 and 1000 kilos,” he said. Mr Pinches, who began training draught horses 16 years ago, currently uses three draught horses on his farm. “I got into it through a friend,” Mr Pinches said. “Once you get the bug you go from one to two to three, it’s sort of addictive. “We actually use them for what they’re bred for.”

Traditional craft on show Artisan Olivia O’Connor will demonstrate the intricate skill of using traditional tools to create bespoke wooden rocking horses at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. This is the first time Ms O’Connor has attended the event and she will be on-site for the three days to take orders for new rocking horses, discuss restorations and sell her small wooden toys. She enjoys attending events and showing visitors the traditional hand tools that she uses as well as demonstrating the carving process.

“It is really nice to let people realise that there are still many people out there practising and making a living from traditional crafts.” Olivia O’Connor The Gippsland-based artist developed her love for natural materials such as leather and timber from her formative years growing up

on a Mornington Peninsula farm. Studies in furniture design and construction and later prop making at the National Institute of Dramatic Art led Ms O’Connor to a career in prop making and as a scenic artist for a wide variety of shows and films in Sydney and London. A highlight was crafting the saddle for London’s Royal National Theatre production of War Horse. In search of a sea change Ms O’Connor returned to regional Victoria in 2013, to the countryside and natural materials that had inspired her as a child. From her workshop and studio on a picturesque farm in the rolling hills of Berrys Creek Ms O’Connor creates her unique rocking horses, one of which will be available to view at Seymour. It’s very hard to get a free lunch in the beef industry, which is why smart producers are taking notice of the benefits that come from crossbreeding with Brahmans. Recent research has shown that crossbreeding with Brahmans can boost production by between 20 and 40 per cent, depending on nutritional and stress levels. The adaptable and high performing breed can also improve lowly-heritable traits such as fertility, milking ability and longevity, putting more profits into producers’ pockets. While Brahmans are well known for their drought tolerance, exceptional foraging ability and good feed conversion, the breed can also demonstrate meat yield and eating quality attributes. Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association southern branch chairman George Merceica said Brahmans had continued to perform well in taste test competitions in 2015. After taking out the Clermont Cattlemen’s Taste Test in 2014, the breed followed up in 2015 by winning the Brisbane Royal Show 70-day grain-fed taste test competition. The association is embracing the latest

advances in genetic mapping — or genomics — to give Australian producers a jump start in selecting for profitable beef traits. The ongoing Beef Information Nucleus Project is improving the scope and accuracy of Breedplan EBVs through advances in genomics and more comprehensive collection and analysis of phenotypic data. The project is evaluating the performance of 70 Brahman sires, including six Beef CRC sires, and their expected progeny of 833 steers and 949 heifers over three years of breeding. Association general manager John Croaker said the association’s stud breeders were quick to embrace the opportunity to record financially significant traits for growth, fertility and carcase qualities. “Of the 2014 calves recorded to date, 57 per cent have at least one weight trait recorded,” Mr Croaker said. “There is also an increasing trend to record other performance traits. “Of these 2014 calves, 26 per cent have scrotal circumference records and 16 per cent of males and 13 per cent of females have carcase scan data.” Visit the Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association at Cattle Yards - 5.

Local flavours on show After a successful debut at the 2015 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, chef Adrian Hensley is returning this year to whip up some delicious dishes using fresh Victorian ingredients. He will cook up a storm in the Country Kitchen with meat cuts provided by butcher Bob Dewar, who will be demonstrating how to break down carcases and prepare traditional and alternative meat cuts.

He said he always tried to incorporate Victorian produce into his cooking.

Mr Hensley said he was happy to come back to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expo and said last year was a really good experience.

Mr Hensley, who has worked with alternative meats including kangaroo and rabbit, said he was eager to cook with different meat this year.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year was something I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t done before,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really enjoyable to get among the crowd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The highlight for me was doing the cook-off, which was an absolute blast, and working with Bob was really good to milk his knowledge.â&#x20AC;?

Karen Sutherland from Edible Eden Design hopes to educate people about the many uses of native Australian plants.

Growing native plants to eat An educational display run by Karen Sutherland of Edible Eden Design will detail the uses and benefits of Australian bush foods and herbs. Ms Sutherland will also teach people how to grow their own edible gardens and home farms incorporating native plants. “We live in this country so it just seems strange to ignore the plants that grow here naturally, it seems ignorant,” Ms Sutherland said. “They’re an addition to food and

can be used medicinally too; they have fragrance and flavours that you absolutely cannot get from other plants.” Ms Sutherland compared the knowledge surrounding these native plants to the introduction of tomatoes to Australia, when they were sold as fruit and consumed with sugar.

“Every person in Australia would know how to use a tomato now,” she said. Ms Sutherland said the knowledge about the use of native plants was limited, so it was her goal to open people’s eyes about the plants’ many uses. “Native plants in terms of food are just not known about. “I’m trying to give people inspiration to think ‘I could grow that as a little crop’,” she said.

During talks and workshops throughout the day, Ms Sutherland will cover different topics surrounding the native plants, providing a point of difference for people who want to come to more than one session. Her topics will include the use of plants such as old man saltbush, lemon myrtle, cinnamon myrtle and native pepper in medicine, tea and cooking. She will also provide examples

of the plants at different stages of preparation, including fresh, dried and browned leaves, and will have a range of plants in pots for audiences to get an idea about how they grow. Bob the butcher is back Not only does he have 53 years’ experience as a butcher, Bob Dewar has been head of the Butcher Shop exhibit at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo for the past 24 years and he is back this year. Mr Dewar, also known as ‘Bob the Butcher’, has experience in smallgoods sales right through to abattoir work. “I’ve gathered a lot of knowledge from a number of years — it’s nice to pass it on to others,” Mr Dewar said. Sausage making will be a special feature of Mr Dewar’s demonstrations and he

will explore preparing family favourites such as lamb, beef, pork, chicken and fish sausages as well as using unconventional meats like rabbit. While he described the demonstration as an “opportunity for an education on meat”, vegetarians can still acquire useful tips because Mr Dewar will also be demonstrating creative ways to cook with mushrooms. He will also explain how to break down carcases. Economic cooking will be the main message of his demonstration and Mr Dewar said he wanted to teach people how to get the most out of their meat,

Back again After a good experience last year, William Adams Ag is back for its second Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. A machine made by Metalform Tow and Farm has the ability to reduce a farmer’s urea usage by up to 45 per cent. Tow and Farm’s Australian sales manager Neil Parker said the Tow and Fert machine came in three sizes, from 1000 litres up to 4000 litres and reduced the amount of urea used by administering it as a liquid. “It also has the ability to put out fine products like lime,” Mr Parker said. “A typical farmer would put it out as dry and the wind would get a hold of it and fertilise the neighbour’s property, but with our machine they can put it out as liquid.” So far Mr Parker said he had only received positive reception from farmer’s using the business’ machines, especially in terms of fertiliser savings and reduction of nitrogen reaching the waterways. “The biggest thing about these machines is that they’re easy to use but that it saves the farmer time,” he said. Mr Parker will be at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo where he said he expected a lot of the company’s lifestyle machines, including the

tow behind mower and new manure collectors, to be popular. “These (manure collectors) are a sweeper, so they hook up behind the quad bike and they travel from walking pace to as fast as they want to go, and it cleans an acre paddock in 15 (minutes) where doing it with a wheel barrow and shovel could take four hours,” Mr Parker said. We can plan to live. Victorian Fire agencies have run education programs for at least 30 years. Community Fireguard, FireReady Victoria, Bushfire Workshops etc are targeted at being safe from bushfires and many Victorians have taken advantage of these programs to develop plans that will minimise the impact of fires on their property and protect the lives of their families. Decade of support for expo Heritage Tanks is celebrating 10 years as a major sponsor of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The Australian-based family-owned manufacturer of rural, domestic and commercial rainwater tanks is a long-time supporter of the expo and is excited to return to Seymour once again. Manufactured in Italy and distributed by Mirco Brothers Machinery in Minto, NSW, the tractors have a low centre of gravity, which offers a high level of safety when working on steep, hilly country and across slopes of up to 45 degrees. 10 year warranty gives peace of mind Neil Beer Seymour is offering a 10-year extended warranty on all new vehicles sold by the prominent car dealership at Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Dealer principal Greg Beer said the addition of Subaru and Nissan franchises in June 2015 had expanded the options for new and existing customers of the long-established Holden and Mitsubishi dealership, which has been operating in Seymour since 1980. He said an extensive range of sports utility vehicles and dual cabs including the popular Holden Colorado, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara will be on display at the expo.

Visitors to the site will have the opportunity to inspect the vehicles, talk to the experienced sales staff, discuss finance options and collect brochures to take home. Mr Beer said the business has had a good response to its presence at the expo and last year sold 10 new vehicles during the event. And with the number of visitors coming through the gates Mr Beer said the expo provided a great opportunity to engage with new clients who might be considering a new or used car purchase in the near future.
