Help fill club’s time capsule A time capsule to celebrate the centenary of Shepparton Golf Club will be buried during 2022, containing up to 200 envelopes to be opened in 2047. The capsule will be buried on the course close to the clubhouse and will be marked with a plaque depicting the reopening year. Club members and the general public can purchase one of the envelopes online and fill in the necessary information so the club can find you or your descendants in 2047.

Club celebrates 100th birthday

The envelopes will cost $25 each, will be A4 size and can be filled to 20mm with letters, photographs, USB sticks, CDs and any other relevant family information. There are certain items not allowed in the capsule to protect everyone’s valuable information. Plastic cling-wrap is the worst offender, because as it deteriorates it produces acid. Others items not allowed in the capsule are rubber and wooden products, batteries and any liquids.

It is an extreme honour to be president of Shepparton Golf Club in what will be a fantastic year in the club’s history.

Envelopes can be ordered online in April and picked up and paid for at the golf club after all your information is printed, so you can then start collecting your contents.

On April 5, 1922, Shepparton Golf Club was officially formed at the current site, and this date will mark the start of our centenary celebrations.

The club plans to finalise collection of the envelopes by June 15, and arrange for the capsule to be buried in July.

Before April 1922, the records show golf was played on land on the northern boundary of St Augustine’s Church in Knight St, which was prior to World War I, but the formation of Shepparton Golf Club was on April 5, 1922. Two years ago, a Centenary Committee was formed under the stewardship of Neville Lavis, and these dedicated members have volunteered many hours to make this year a special year for the club. Celebrations kick-off with an official invitation-only lunch on the centenary birthday, with the raising of our Centenary Flag. On Saturday, April 9 is our Gala Dinner, which will be open to members and guests who want to share this special moment in history with members of the club. Throughout the year we have many other activities planned. We have commissioned an official Centenary Book, which has been compiled by Geoff Allemand and Peter Matthews, and these will be available to purchase shortly. We would like to thank those many people who have contributed to this publication with copious photos and documents relating to the early years of the club and its members. The development of our club over the past 100 years should not be taken lightly and our current and future members should acknowledge all the hard work by previous members and office bearers without whom we would not be here today. The club has continued to develop under the guidance of successive committees and the invaluable work of countless volunteers. We have one of the best courses in regional Victoria, with rolling hills on a sand base. Looking out across the greens from the clubhouse is one of the best views in Shepparton. Other features of the club include a 12-room motel, bar and restaurant, and function and events spaces, along with a fully equipped Pro Shop with cart and equipment hire, a short course practice area and golf tuition available from our PGA professional. I look forward to seeing you all at the club and here’s to the next 100 years. David Collier Shepparton Golf Club president

Golf prodigy set for big things BY ZAC STANDISH

For most Year 10 students, after school hours mainly consist of homework, Facebook and Call of Duty. But Bailey Goodall isn’t your regular Year 10 student. After completing a day’s school, the 16-year-old makes his way straight to Shepparton Golf Club where he spends the next three hours before the sun sets either ironing out his swing on the driving range, perfecting his short game on the putting greens or working his way through a few holes on the course. This routine has delivered incredible success for the young golf prodigy in the early stages of his budding career, having already twice represented Australia at the World Junior Championships in San Diego and Las Vegas, and become the youngest winner of the Victorian Country Region Championship and Shepparton Golf Club Championship. With his eyes set on a career on the US PGA Tour, Bailey recently enjoyed a taste of life as a professional golfer, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Hannah Green while playing in the recent TPS Murray River tournament at Cobram Barooga Golf Club. While he didn’t come away with the result he would have hoped for, Bailey said the experience of being involved in the tournament would be invaluable for his development moving forward. “It was fantastic to play with the pros and a fantastic experience for me; I played the one in Rosebud and it has given me great insight into how good they actually are,” he said. “For me, I just take it as a massive learning experience — I see what I need to work on and it makes me realise the level that I’m at. “I didn’t play that well, but I did learn a lot of stuff and by being able to talk to the pros, they taught me about how to handle playing in those big tournaments, which will definitely help me.” Having been part of such a large-scale tournament, Bailey said it only made him more excited for what his future could potentially hold as a professional golfer. “It made me a bit more comfortable around the crowds. When I first started playing big tournaments I was a bit uncomfortable, but now having experienced it a bit I have gotten used to it.

“For me, I just take it as a massive learning experience — I see what I need

to work on and it makes me realise the level that I’m at.”

“It was a bit strange hearing from people that I know that they saw me on TV — it kind of added to the pressure a bit, but I really enjoyed that aspect of it. “My goal is to get on the US PGA Tour and, playing with a couple of guys who are at the level on the weekend, it made me realise just how good that lifestyle would be and really motivated me to get to that level.”

“I have learnt how to play a little better and score better in tournaments rather than just have a hit on the range — learning how to compete has been massive for me this summer and I feel my game has just improved all round.

With the TPS Murray River tournament serving as the crescendo of Bailey’s busy summer, he has been hard at work playing in a host of different tournaments such as the Victorian Masters of Amateurs.

“There are still some bad rounds, but the average is getting better.”

He said this period of consistent tournament play had done wonders for the development of his game.

“It is a bit strange, but it doesn’t feel that weird to me, for me personally it is just normal,” he said.

“Along with the Masters of the Amateurs and the pro stuff, I have also competed a lot more in the junior stuff and been towards the lead, so it has been a good indication that I am slowly getting better.

Carrying the reputation as a prodigy around Shepparton Golf Club, Bailey said it was something he takes in his stride.

“It feels pretty good that people see me in that way, it gives me a lot of positive reinforcement that I’m on the right track and one day I will get where I want.”

Book brings history to life

Duo wins golf Australia award

A book celebrating Shepparton Golf Club’s centenary has been commissioned and will be available soon. Following is the foreword from the new book: This book commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Shepparton Golf Club. To understand the significance of this event it is necessary to understand the history of golf in the Shepparton area, for there is no doubt that golf has been played in Shepparton for over 100 years. The earliest records suggest that a golf course was certainly laid out on a property on the Northern boundary of St Augustine’s Church in Knight Street, Shepparton prior to World War I. The Golden Jubilee history records that the “course had sand scrapes fenced with sheep proof fences, as were common to this area ... the first tee (was) adjacent to Mr James O’Connell’s home in Knight street ... A full set of clubs consisted of 4 — a lofter, a cleek, mashie and putter. The course probably consisted of nine holes in numerous paddocks, which frequently held cattle and sheep, with stiles provided over the fences”. A stoic lot, our forefathers! But introduce the game of golf to Shepparton they did, and in the process started the journey that we celebrate this year ... the 100th anniversary of the Shepparton Golf Club at its current site. The Shepparton Golf Club as we know it was formed in 1922 on a site which our first President, Mr T. N. Muntz recorded “occupie(d) a picturesque position on the right bank of the river about two and a half miles from Town”. Current members owe a significant debt to those who 100 years ago had the foresight to re-establish golf in Shepparton at what is a beautiful site. Rolling hills on river sand provides one of the best layouts and courses in country Victoria, if not Australia. The development of our club is recorded in great detail in this book, but it is appropriate to acknowledge the debt owed by all of our current (and future) members to the members and office holders of earlier years. This club has continued to develop under the guidance of successive committees and the invaluable contribution of countless volunteers. Their work, enthusiasm, vision, and commitment to the game of golf and its development and growth in the Goulburn Valley must be acknowledged. This book provides that opportunity.

Kim Morris and Lynley Eadie weren’t expecting to win one of Golf Australia’s most prestigious awards during their ritual round of golf on Wednesday (December 1, 2021). The pair, finalists for the Visionary of the Year award, had teed off early to tune in for the 10 am announcement. But when a champion of women’s golf appeared on the Zoom call, that’s when it dawned on the Shepparton Golf Club duo. Legendary Australian golfer Karrie Webb informed Kim and Lynley that they had won the 2021 Visionary of the Year award. “It was very exciting; especially to have Karrie Webb present the award,” Kim said. “We didn’t really think that we would win but once we saw Karrie pop up on the Zoom call screen that was when we thought ‘oh, we might have won’. “It was great to see her support the award, support women’s golf, and it was great to see a woman golfer recognised by presenting the award.” Kim and Lynley were among four finalists for the Visionary of the Year gong. The two women received the monthly award — which celebrates work to promote gender equality in golf — in June (2021) for their outstanding work on planning and implementing pathways to help women get into golf and become members at Shepparton Golf Club. Once they were announced as finalists, voting opened to the public to decide who should take out the 2021 edition. After months of Kim and Lynley helping out the community, it was time for the public to give back. “Thank you to everyone who voted, we couldn’t have done it without you,” Kim said. “This (award) is not only great for women’s golf but golf in Shepparton in general. It will help get the news out about our club, which is fantastic.” The award comes with $10,000 worth of Callaway REVA products — designed specifically for women. Kim said they would put the equipment they had won back into the program. She expressed her gratitude to everyone who played a role in getting their names on the Visionary of the Year award. “We could not have done this without the help and support from the club’s lady members, general manager Russell Powell and the entire committee. “Although Lynley and myself have our name on the award, it was a team effort.”

Further, as Peter Ross-Edwards wrote in the foreword to Ron Michael’s excellent history “More Birds than Birdies” (1985) ... along with excellent facilities, “there has developed a spirit of goodwill and friendship which ... is unsurpassed” and indeed continues to this day.

1942

1956

1962

The golf course was reserved for military training every Sunday afternoon — for as long as was required. This included exercises, rifle and machine-gun practice.

A Special Meeting approved a new layout to incorporate grass greens (“to a Melbourne standard“). The length of the new course was to be 6500 yards (5943m) with a par of 73. Members endorsed a plan to build a new clubhouse at a cost of £18,000 ($36,000) on the site known as Nicker’s.

Lights were installed around the bowling green. Mr Len Juniper was appointed as the first golf club manager. Three acres (1.2ha) at the entrance to the club were subdivided, with plans to build a caretaker’s house on one block.

1958

Initial planning began for a 20-unit motel at the back of the 18th green.

1945 The road between Shepparton Park and the club property closed and was made available to the club.

1950 The club acquired its first tractor.

1951

The new clubhouse building works began in April. The committee investigated the “possibility of reserving an area adjacent to the clubhouse for a bowling green, and possibly tennis courts, swimming pool and a caravan park”.

Water was reticulated to the course for the first time, with a 2-inch pump and a 4-inch main. The pump was belt-driven by a tractor.

1957

1959

The State Electricity Commission connected power to the course. The first grass green was sown on the 17th hole. Prior to this all play had been on sand-scrapes. Within a year it was deemed fit to be used. Twentyeight acres (11ha) of Mr Eugene Nicker’s adjoining property was purchased for £4500.

1955 The club secured a 21-year lease over the Crown land it occupied. Course architect Sam Berriman visited to discuss a new layout, including the recently-acquired 28 acres (11ha).

1983 The new Shepparton Golf Bowls Clubhouse officially opened in November.

1993

1978

Norman Von Nida visited the course for an ‘instructional clinic’.

1954

1977

Contracts were signed for what would now be a 12unit motel, construction began and the work was completed by the end of August. The remainder of the Nicker property — including the house — was purchased for $45,000. A new practice fairway was installed between the house and the cemetery. As a result, the old practice fairway became redundant.

The new clubhouse was completed at a cost of £25,000 — in time for Opening Day on March 22 — and all of the new course was available. The club acquired 10 acres (4ha) on the northern side of the course, and then an additional 5 acres (2ha) for a practice area. The Licensing Court granted the club’s application for a liquor licence.

1960 The new clubhouse was officially opened on April 6 by Victorian Governor Sir Dallas Brooks, who played that day. The Shepparton Golf bowling green was approved for construction, with Mr Bert Leffers to supervise.

1999

Young’s land — 60 acres (24ha) — was purchased for $150,000.

1998 Crown land was purchased for $125,000 and an exchange made of Young’s land. Clubhouse entrance and bar refurbished. Loan of $225,000 for Crown land purchase, sewerage installation and refurbishment.

Completion of grass green replacement program of 19 greens over 10 years.

2014 The clubhouse was partially destroyed after fire ripped though the roof on Saturday, January 18. The Club’s memorabilia and records were salvaged. The clubhouse reopened in October 2014.

2022 The Shepparton Golf Club celebrates 100 years.

Wine, dine and spend some time The restaurant at Shepparton Golf Club has been trading in various forms for many years, however, recent times have seen a departure from the offerings of the past. In 2020 during COVID-19 restrictions management decided the club should offer a takeaway menu four nights a week, to assist those in the community who were in lockdown. Menus were sensitively structured from a price point and were changed weekly to maintain interest. This period was very successful for the club and has formed a strong base from which the restaurant has been able to trade since these shutdowns.

The restaurant opens on Wednesday night for pizza and pasta, and on Friday and Saturday for a limited à la carte menu. It has been trading very well and has built a strong following from the community. There are a number of function areas at Shepparton Golf Club, including a 200-seat room for weddings and other large gatherings. The spaces have been well designed to cater for a number of smaller functions with the inclusion of retractable partitions. There is also an intimate conference or function space that caters for about 40 guests. The balcony space seats about 70 guests, which is used frequently over the warmer months. All rooms overlook the picturesque golf course,

and the function space and restaurant are probably one of Shepparton’s best kept secrets. There is a 12-room motel on the property, which includes a two-bedroom apartment. The motel is a late 1970s design and is clean and functional. It is beautifully located adjacent to the 18th green and most guests return because of the tranquillity of the property. The ‘play and stay’ packages offered by Shepparton Golf Club are very well supported by players who return year after year and bookings are solid all year round. Shepparton Golf Club is principally in the golf business. However, the motel, restaurant and function centre offer locals and visitors alike the opportunity to experience some of the best aspects of Shepparton’s hospitality and scenery.

Our home-grown golf pro BY GIANNI FRANCIS

Kyle Michel has had a golf club in his hand since he could walk, sinking birdies from three years old and becoming a junior member of Shepparton Golf Club at age 11 — the youngest possible joining age at the time. The golf prodigy who turned professional in 2019 is a three‐time winner of the Shepparton Golf Club Junior Open, and three‐time Greater Shepparton Junior Master Champion.

International Junior Championships. Kyle then hit the United States, winning the Cotton States Invitational Strokeplay in Louisiana in 2018. He made the Sweet 16 at the 2018 Western Amateur Championship at Sunset Ridge Country Club in Chicago.

He carried the mantle of champion on into adulthood as the three‐time Shepparton Golf Club Open Men’s Champion, and two‐time Goulburn Valley District Open Men’s Champion. Unsurprisingly, Kyle was playing off scratch by the age of 15, where he shot the amateur course record of 66; still holding four course records at Shepparton, Kialla, Mooroopna and Kyabram Parkland to this day.

And if that wasn’t enough, Kyle represented Australia at the 2019 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship at She Shan Golf Club in Shanghai, China.

Taking the talent national, he represented Victoria at the Schools Sports Golf Championships in 2012 and 2013.

At 16, the home-grown golf pro began playing Division One Melbourne Metropolitan Pennant for Kingswood. From there it was all over for the competition, with Kyle knocking off the Victorian Country Men’s Champion title twice in a row in 2015 and 2016.

And because Australia couldn’t contain him, we exported him to China in 2014 where he represented Australia at the Aaron Baddeley

Kyle represented Victoria four times at the Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches, winning the Interstate series in 2017, 2018 and

2019. In the 2019 series, Kyle went through the week undefeated. He was runner-up in the Victorian Men’s Amateur Championship in 2018 and then a quarter finalist in the same competition in 2019. Kyle is now setting his sights on Europe or Asia, and will continue to ply his trade in Australia on the highly competitive golf scene — honing his skills and establishing himself to secure a card for an overseas pro tour.

Jarrod’s legacy lives on Anyone who has any interest in golf knows how good Shepparton’s Jarrod Lyle was, but those closest to him say he was an even better person. Jarrod, who started his career at Shepparton Golf Club, died in 2018 from acute myeloid leukemia. But despite his repeat battles with cancer, which ultimately ended his life at the age of 36, Jarrod made a huge impact on people who knew him and the sport of golf. Because of this, he was nominated for Greater Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame. Fellow Shepparton Golf Club member and family friend Ian Bull sat down to discuss the impact Jarrod had during his short life. “I first met Jarrod in 1992-93 when I joined the Shepparton Golf Club after I transferred from Melbourne to Shepparton for work,” Ian said. “I was pretty quick to join up to the golf club and the very first round of golf I ever played was with Jarrod and his father John. “I think Jarrod at the time was about 12, maybe 13, and, so, I have known Jarrod since that time.” Ian said Jarrod’s love for the game was clear from that first meeting. “As a pre-teenager, back in 1992-93, he was a young fellow who clearly loved the game and he tried to hit the ball very, very hard,” he said. “Under the careful guidance of his father John and others around the golf club he certainly refined his skills and became one of the best players in the world.” Ian said Jarrod’s diagnosis halted his progress

“Jarrod, from his teenage years, was clearly a person that was going to give it his all,” he said.

“That’s a tough question as there were so many (highlights),” Ian said.

“But for his initial diagnosis of leukemia as a 17-year-old, that really put a halt to his progress within the sport and it also affected his schooling.

“But the one focus he had, when he was undergoing an extensive period of hospitalisation and chemotherapy and all the other things associated with his leukemia diagnosis, was he was certainly committed and very passionate about getting out of the hospital and getting back out on the golf course.” While his initial diagnosis was a shock to Jarrod and his family, it put things into perspective for Shepparton’s first and only golfer to appear on the world stage. “He was clearly devastated, as was his family, with the diagnosis and it was probably fair to say that for a time there it was very uncertain as to whether or not he would pull through with the initial diagnosis as a 17-year-old,” Ian said. “For Jarrod, I think it put things into perspective. “He’d been through a life-threatening situation with his diagnosis and he lived every day of his life in such a way that he’d appreciated what he’s been through and he was thankful for the support that he had from his friends, family and also the medical staff.” Ian said it was hard to summarise Jarrod’s career achievements because of the amount

“Turning professional and making a career as a US PGA Tour player was an enormous achievement and certainly a highlight of his golfing career. “But for me it was all about what he was able to achieve in his own backyard, within Australia. “I was lucky enough to go to countless tournaments and follow and support Jarrod throughout his career in Australia and he had a strong following, not just with his mates and family here in Shepparton, but also right across the country. “As we were to later find out, his popularity in the US was absolutely unbelievable and a lot of people in Australia actually don’t realise how popular he was in America.” Ian explained why Jarrod was such a popular player on the pro tour. “Jarrod was popular for a number of reasons. “Not just the fact that he had survived the diagnosis of leukemia on two occasions, but it was the manner in which he conducted himself on the golf course. “He was extremely popular with caddies, fellow tour players, officials, everyone involved in golf because Jarrod had the attitude and personality to say ‘I’m here for a good time, I’m going to enjoy myself and I’m going to do right

by people’ and that’s what Jarrod always did.” Despite going through his own battles, Jarrod always had time for others. “I was with Jarrod at the Shriners (Hospital for) Children (Open) tournament in Las Vegas back a few years ago and he just finished his first round of golf, played an extremely good round, and there was a fellow standing outside the media tent wanting to speak to Jarrod,” Ian said. “I had a chat with this particular fellow and he was saying his father was going through acute myeloid leukemia, the same disease that Jarrod had beaten twice, and he wanted to let Jarrod know that he was an inspiration to his family and also his father, who was gravely ill. “Jarrod gave freely of his time and spoke to the family for 20 minutes, half-an-hour. “When Jarrod walked away to complete his media commitments, the father took me aside and said ‘I can’t believe Jarrod Lyle would talk to me and share his experiences’, but that was the sort of guy Jarrod was. “He loved to be there to support other people and he was an inspiration for people going through not just leukemia-related diseases, but anybody who was suffering from potentially

fatal diseases. “He was that sort of guy.” It was that support that made Jarrod want to give back to Challenge, the charity for kids with cancer, that helped him when he was first diagnosed. “It was the Challenge organisation for the kids with cancer, that supported Jarrod through his fight initially,” Ian said. “For Jarrod, this was about giving back. “So, Jarrod became an ambassador for Challenge and he wore his heart on his sleeve and proudly supported the organisation as best he could and that continues to this day. “Jarrod had enormous support right across the globe. “People freely come forward to help support, to sponsor, to donate in any way they could to help the Challenge foundation because of the work that was being undertaken. “Jarrod realised that it was through the help from that particular organisation that he was able to get through a most horrific time in his life and they supported him right through until his ultimate passing.”

Shepparton Golf Club. | CELEBRATING 100 YEARS 13

Even though Graeme didn’t compete in the PGA Tour, he still achieved a lot in golf. He was a seven times Shepparton Golf Club Champion between 1961 and 1970, as well as the Goulburn Valley Champion for the last three years and Champion of Champions for the last two years of his playing career. So, at 29 and realising his professional status opportunity was gone, Graeme decided to still make golf his career and opened the Pro Shop. In the early years of the shop, all golf drivers were wooden and there was nothing like motorised carts or golf driving simulators.

Keeping it professional

The Shepparton Golf Club Committee quickly realised having a professional golfer on-site selling equipment and giving lessons to members was a valuable inclusion for the club. Graeme was the club’s golf professional until 1995. He was followed by other professionals: Steve Whyte, Gary Dixon, David Trower, Andrew Walkley (teaching Pro), Mitchell McComas, Darren Rodgers and Russell Kelly.

In 1971, Graeme Wright (affectionally known as Sam) opened the Pro Shop on the north side of Shepparton Golf Club’s clubrooms. At the time Sam was 29 years old and dreamt of becoming a professional golfer. However, the PGA Tour only took touring professionals who were under 28 years of age and who had achieved three years of partnership.

On January 1, 1976 Graeme was admitted as a professional with the PGA. Currently the Shepparton Golf Club Pro Shop is managed by Russell Kelly. The shop now looks completely different from the original 1971 store. However, the same professionalism in golfing lessons, ranges of golf clubs, equipment and golfing attire is still available.

A great night to play a round BY NEVILLE LAVIS

Nifty’s Nocturnal Classic started 27 years ago and has been on the Shepparton Golf Club syllabus ever since, enjoyed by many. Its origin was one night in 1995 when a group of Shepparton Golf Club members snuck out to the club one evening only to find the general committee was meeting, people were everywhere and — as we hadn’t arranged night-time access — we all went down to the fourth tee and hit off there. The night was a success and plans were then put into place to get permission to run a competition in the dark. The original plan of doing three holes by day, having dinner, then six holes by night has continued. Being an Ambrose event, the first two teams hit off at 6 pm, then dinner and finish off the remaining six holes with a shot gun start just before 9 pm. As the night balls have a light stick inside them, they can be seen for a considerable distance and look spectacular in flight.

At presentations later in the night every player takes home a special prize. It could even be a bucket and spade, as we believed they weren’t ever going to get on the American golf circuit. As the night is a fun competition, we have over the years arranged challenges for the golfers, which include hitting off a half-inflated car tube with a board over it, putting with one hand on the first three holes by day, and using a special club made of steel. The best challenge is the ‘Happy Gilmore’ for the first hit of the night, with the player moving forward while hitting the ball. As this is the first drive of the day everyone is watching — and even some of the best golfers have difficulty connecting with the ball when moving. The best-ever Happy Gilmore was Leighton Lyle last year who hit a monster shot on the 10th tee down to the corner, a staggering 265 metres. I don’t think it will ever be beaten. In 2014, after fire had destroyed our club house, we used a temporary marquee at the back of the 18th green — but this wasn’t going to deter our spirits. The only problem was we had a team of

indoor cricketers staying at the motel and their involvement was to play up on the first night of their trip by hitting tennis balls around the marquee while presentations were being arranged and in progress. It added a new dimension. On the 25th year we celebrated the night by having our dinner on the sixth tee. The night was barmy and the setting was sensational and everyone had a memorable time dining with nature. As the Nifty’s Nocturnal Classic is a fun night, it has created a lot of fond memories over the time and will hopefully continue being well patronised.

‘We’ve got Jack’s scorecard from

that day and he shot 69 - 34 on the front and 35 on the back.”

The year is 1962. Robert Menzies is Australia’s prime minister. Nobody has heard of dollars and cents because for an honest day’s work you are paid with pounds and shillings. The first EJ Holden comes off the production line and it is the year Jack Nicklaus played a round of golf in Shepparton. That is not a misprint. Jack Nicklaus, aka The Golden Bear, the man regarded as the greatest ever professional golfer. The date was November 4, 1962 and Nicklaus, then aged 22 and just months after winning the first of his 18 majors, found himself in the Goulburn Valley. Former Shepparton Golf Club general manager Stephen Segrave takes up the story. ‘‘Jack had won the US Open (at Oakmont) and in those days he was signed up by (sporting goods brand) Slazenger,’’ Stephen said. ‘‘They were a global company at that time and brought him out to Australia for a tour. ‘‘I know they played a number of different courses, including Ballarat, and at that time the Australian Open and Australian PGA was a world-class event.’’ Nicklaus was joined for his round at Shepparton by good friend and emerging Australian professional Bruce Devlin. Devlin, who turned professional in 1961, posted five top 10 finishes in majors and won eight times on the US PGA Tour during a successful golf career.

16 Shepparton Golf Club. | CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

It was a typically sunny Sunday afternoon in Shepparton as Nicklaus and Devlin treated a large crowd of locals to their brilliant talents. These days Shepparton Golf Club is a par 72, but the course was a par 71 more than 50 years ago. ‘‘We’ve got Jack’s scorecard from that day and he shot 69 - 34 on the front and 35 on the back,’’ Stephen said. ‘‘Bruce also shot 69 on the day, so nothing split them.’’ Stephen said the memory of Nicklaus’ visit to Shepparton was revived late last year (2014). ‘‘Prue Dobson was looking through some memorabilia which belonged to her parents Bruce and Norma Cameron when she came across the photos of Jack,’’ he said. ‘‘Bruce was captain of the club in 1962 when Jack was here. ‘‘The Cameron family has a long history with the club — Bruce was a former captain and president, and his father Frank was club president during the 1930s. ‘‘So Prue got in contact with us and presented the photos to the golf club on behalf of her mum and dad.’’ Stephen said the tale of the photos did not end there, with the day Jack played in Shepparton stretching wider than the Goulburn Valley. ‘‘Ian Bugg from Shepparton Camera House is one of our club members and he said he could blow up prints of the photos for nothing,’’ he said. ‘‘So we got them blown up and there was an

Back in the day of Jack idea to see whether we could get Jack to sign them. ‘‘Jarrod Lyle and his wife Briony thought it could be a possibility. ‘‘So we gave them a copy of the club history and a letter for Jack, explaining the signed photos would form a great part of the club’s memorabilia display.’’ Jarrod’s decision to take a break from tour golf in the United States resulted in Shepparton Golf Club receiving some good news earlier than Stephen expected. ‘‘Jarrod and Briony walked into the clubhouse on a Monday recently with a package,’’ he said. ‘‘I couldn’t believe it that they had got Jack to do it.’’ The two photos of that November day in 1962 are framed and will take pride of place in the Shepparton clubhouse. Stephen said both boasted special inscriptions. ‘‘The first photo reads — ‘To Shepparton Golf Club, good golfing, signed Jack Nicklaus, 1962’ and the other photo has — ‘All the best and good golfing to the guys at the Shepparton Golf Club, 1962’. ‘‘I don’t think too many clubs around Australia would have two signed, personalised photos of Jack Nicklaus playing at their course. ‘‘He was in Shepparton when he was 22, before he became ‘The Golden Bear’ and went on to become such a revered figure in golf. ‘‘Those photos are priceless.’’

Building a champion dynasty There is a Dixon dynasty at Shepparton Golf Club. Between three members of the family, a Dixon has been named club champion 16 times. Bob Dixon has held up the trophy 11 times, eldest son Dean has four to his name and Luke was the most recent champion in 2013. The trio also have their names on golf club champion boards throughout the state.

All in the family: Bob Dixon and son Luke regularly go for a hit together, with both being exceptional golfers.

In his first full year of golf, Bob took home the club championship aged just 28. ‘‘I was surprised, I didn’t expect it,’’ he said. ‘‘The two guys I had to play with were extremely good players and I just went out there to play. ‘‘I remember I had an FE Holden two-tone and I was sitting on the bumper bar taking my shoes off — this is 1968 — and it dawned on me that I was club champion of my home town.’’ Being named his club’s best player was not even something Bob had considered. But he received encouragement from Joe Murphy, known as the ‘‘ice man’’, who used to deliver ice to ice boxes before the days of refrigeration.

Dean, 42, has won three titles at the prestigious Victorian Golf Club, while Luke has four at the Eastern Golf Club.

‘‘He said to me one day, ‘You’re good enough to be club champion’ and it never dawned on me (previously),’’ Bob said.

Bob, 75, achieved his first taste of being crowned a club’s greatest player in his home town of Yarrawonga.

‘‘That sort of got my brain ticking over and noone ever said to me other than him that you could be club champion.

‘‘He was my first sort of inspiration.’’ A lot happened between Bob’s first win at Yarrawonga and his subsequent titles in Shepparton. He combined golf with football in his youth, which was what brought him to Shepparton. ‘‘I used to play football and tennis and cricket and squash, but this game seemed to suit me and my temperament,’’ he said of golf. The first of Bob’s 11 titles at Shepparton Golf Club came in 1973. It would be the start of dominant era for the golfing talent as he notched up eight in a row. The final three wins would come in 1984-85 and 1988. Holding the most titles at the club, he said he had seen a few players who had the potential to win more. But with that much talent, Bob saw them move on to bigger and better things. ‘‘This is why I won more than anybody else,’’ he said. ‘‘I was married and working here and playing golf here and I had no aspirations to do anything else. ‘‘But when you get somebody as good as Jarrod Lyle or Leighton Lyle, then they move on and they turn pro.

‘‘I did very well for a battler, but I was a bloke that just worked at the cannery and played golf on the weekend.’’

Bob and his sons are the only father-son combination to win club championships at Shepparton Golf Club.

The Dixon family is often seen at the golf club each weekend.

And the Dixons take their versatility into tennis.

Bob’s wife Paula won the C-grade championship eight years ago in her first year in the sport. She frantically followed Luke and Bob around the greens on club championship day in 2013, tracking Luke who took home the A-grade title as Bob won the B-grade on the same day. Bob tried to convince his three boys to appreciate the sport from a young age, taking Luke, Dean and Scott out to the greens each year. While Scott played baseball and never picked up golf, Luke and Dean also did not initially develop a passion for the sport. ‘‘When they were young about twice a year I would bring them up and get them to hit 10 balls and get them to check their grips,’’ Bob said. ‘‘After 10 balls they didn’t want to hit any more. They wanted to go play in the sand.’’ Bob said it was a shock when, at age 16, Dean decided to take up golf, becoming C-grade club champion in his first year and taking out the top title not long after.

Both Luke and Dean are superb talents in the sport, with Luke a well-known tennis coach in the region. Bob said Luke did not need any lessons, playing golf to a high standard by teaching himself. ‘‘I taught Dean to play, but I didn’t teach Luke,’’ he said. ‘‘Luke’s just a natural, just do it yourself. He’s a magnificent golfer. Any chance we get (we play together). ‘‘But he’s too good for me. He’ll give me a 15, 16, 17-shot start and still beat me. He’s too good.’’ Bob has ticked off a hole-in-one, but says beating his age is something he would love to achieve. ‘‘I’d love to. This year that is my wish,’’ Bob said. While Scott and Dean are based in Melbourne, Luke still has aims of being crowned A-grade club champion again at Shepparton Golf Club. Now it’s just a question of whether he can secure 10 more to break even with his dad.
