Clubhouse reopening
Clubhouse rises from the ashes September 2014 represents a new beginning for Shepparton Golf Club as we open our new clubhouse with expansive views of the course and surrounds. Our renovation includes a modern and beautifully furnished function room perfect for seating up to 180 people, a renovated Spike Bar for relaxing after golf and a new lounge area for enjoying the company of family and friends. Shepparton Golf Club is a family-friendly venue and the renovations will enable us to realise our goal of providing the community with a facility that has a bit of something for everyone. The rebuilding works could not have happened without the hard work and generosity of a number of people and organisations. Club is looking forward to a bright future Building a strong future for Shepparton Golf Club has been at the heart of the clubhouse reconstruction, after Àre ravaged the venue earlier this year. The January 18 blaze was believed to have started in a rubbish bin, but quickly spread to the clubhouse, destroying nearly 90 per cent of the roof. Shepparton Golf Club general manager Stephen Segrave said the cost of the rebuild was about $1.8 million. Mr Segrave said the club had taken many steps to cleanse itself of the ½re, including hosting a ‘Fire-up Friday ’ event, eight weeks after the incident. “A couple of months after the ½re it was still on everyone ’s minds, so the club had the event to play on the fact that, ‘Yes there was a ½re, but let ’s move on, ’ ” he said. “From here we want to focus on the positives such as having an improved clubhouse; it is all about the way forward. ” While the ½re may have forced the club ’s hand, a modernised look is a result of the rebuild, which has breathed new life into the venue. “We will host more weddings now than
we ever have, we already have ½ve booked in before May next year, and we haven ’t even advertised, ” Mr Segrave said. “We will pick up a lot more; the new furniture and tables will certainly help that as well. ” He said the club had taken the opportunity to improve the facility, with a focus on opening the space up so it is more functional. “We had these vinyl partition doors that separated the end of the clubhouse room before the ½re, ” Mr Segrave said.
From here we want to focus on the positives such as having an improved clubhouse; it is all about the way forward. – Stephen Segrave “If we had a function and they were using the whole space, the doors wouldn ’t fully go back to the wall and the view for the guests in that area
was obstructed. Now the space is completely open, everyone will be able to see. ” A new bulkhead acoustic ceiling will provide better sound throughout the venue, and new carpet has given the room an updated look. Mr Segrave joked the club could now host ice-skating championships at the venue, with an industrial cooling (and heating) system also part of the upgrade. The new system is tipped to be more economical, and will provide better ventilation throughout the building. Mr Segrave said it was the north end of the clubhouse where a majority of the signi½cant changes were evident. “When I look back on the building, I can see the change straightaway, but it will be interesting to see how the members react, ” he said. The sport ’s bar has been pushed back about 2 m to make the space inside the bar better for the staff to work in. “The layout has changed slightly as well; the bar is now bigger and will operate better as well. ” What was formerly the Pro Shop is now the members ’ lounge, with a ½replace and open-plan design. The buggy storage area will become the new Pro Shop.
“There are now ladies ’ and disabled toilets located in the north end of the building, and the men ’s bathroom has been redone as well, ” Mr Segrave said.

The outside of the building was relatively untouched. Mr Segrave said corporate and Christmas functions would also be a focus for the venue, but the club ’s biggest social event from October to March would be ‘Balcony Beers ’ on Fridays. “We utilise the whole balcony area and members of the club, the public, guests and people that live in the neighbourhood are all invited to come, ” he said. ‘Balcony Beers ’ are held on Fridays from 4.30 pm until about 8.30 pm.
Generosity earns naming rights Walter Lee has been playing golf for more than half a century, but it is his decade at the Shepparton Golf Club that stands out as the most memorable for him. “It has been the most memorable because of the people I play golf with, the course itself and the general management, ” Mr Lee, 86, said. He said the club members had remained in good spirits following the ½re which damaged the clubhouse, and he was looking forward to seeing the ½nished product of the rebuild. “The club has been very positive; it ’s surprising the amount of volunteers that have helped, particularly since we didn ’t have a professional at the time. ” Mr Lee said he was surprised and honoured when he was told the members ’ lounge, which he contributed money towards, would be named after him. He also helped the club build a new shed several years ago, and recently purchased a de½brillator to keep on-site.
“A lot of clubs have de½brillators these days, but the Shepparton Golf Club wasn ’t in the position to purchase it, ” he said. “I offered to purchase it, as I was fortunate enough to be able to help — when I was younger I was on committees, but now I am older I am happy to help ½nancially. ” Mr Lee still manages to get to the golf course twice a week. He said his highlight in a decade of membership in Shepparton was winning the Monthly Medal at 83 years old. “I think I was the oldest person to do so at the time, ” he said. “I ’ll continue to play as long as I can. ” Walter Lee said he is proud of Shepparton Golf Club ’s positive spirit during the clubhouse rebuild.

GMR Engineering Services ’ principal engineer Glen Ryan says the rebuilt Shepparton Golf Club is as good as new. Photos: GMR Engineering Services
Rebuild had its difÀculties While the rebuild of the Shepparton Golf Club has been cumbersome, GMR Engineering Services ’ principal engineer Glen Ryan said the Ànished product was well worth the wait. Mr Ryan said the work on the clubhouse, following the January 18 ½re, meant the crew had to undertake a number of upgrades to comply with the current building code. “The original building was developed from an old house, which was added to, extended, and modi½ed over many years, ” Mr Ryan said. “The club has taken the opportunity to do some modi½cations in the building as well, to improve its operation. “This work has really allowed us to refurbish that structure as a whole, instead of in its parts — the end product is a substantially better asset than what they started with. ” A new central climate control system is one of the key features and will provide better ventilation throughout the facility.
“Previously they had a series of modular units, with multiple controls being adjusted to different temperatures, ” Mr Ryan said. “Now there is one system, it will provide all kinds of energy savings and better management. ” A bulkhead ceiling was also part of the rebuild, which will serve both an aesthetic and practical purpose. “The bulkhead ceiling means it drops down around the wall and steps up into the centre part of the ceiling, ” Mr Ryan said. “One of the reasons for it was it allowed us to incorporate a tiled ceiling system, which enables easy access to change light ½ttings. It is also more visually appealing. ” A central ½re alarm system was also part of the upgrade. Mr Ryan said most of the damage from the ½re was con½ned to the roof space, and luckily the major elements of the structure were steel, so they were able to be recovered. However, secondary elements such

as timber in the roof were either burnt completely through or severely charred. “Some parts of the roof were at risk of collapse, but certainly all of the roof space was impacted in one way or another, ” Mr Ryan said. “The challenge with a restoration is you don ’t want the smoke (smell) to re-enter the building, because what happens is sometimes you might have timber which is clearly stained by smoke, that has what we call a carbon web — it ’s like a spider web only it is carbon. ” He said if the smoke-damaged material was left in place, ventilation in the roof space would allow wind to dislodge the carbon and soot, causing the clubhouse to smell. “You could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars restoring a building, and have it structurally sound, but everyone entering the building will notice this pungent smell of soot. ” Mr Ryan said the approach was to completely remove all the ½re-impacted roof space, including some of the unburned elements, to get rid of the smoke odour.

“It is a complex process removing all the ½re-impacted material and still protecting the building from the weather, ” he said. “That is where the time has gone, because we had to replace all the iron and cladding and put new iron on; in doing that you expose the building to weather damage, so we had to do that in a staged process, and that is time-consuming. “We had a ¾oor that was undamaged and we had to try and protect that as well; you can imagine when you are demolishing a roof and bringing down elements, you don ’t want it to collapse and damage the ¾oor. ” After ½ve months of work, Mr Ryan said the rebuild had been a great success despite the challenges. “We are really pleased with the ½nished product; it worked out well despite the intensity of the ½re, ” he said. “It really has come together nicely; it ’s like a new building. ”

Members dig deep to bolster funds Shepparton Golf Club treasurer Mike Hall was impressed by the positive spirit and generosity members had shown in the aftermath of the January Àre that ripped through the clubhouse. Mr Hall, 64, said a fundraising drive had gathered more than $70 000 for extra expenses that were not covered by insurance. “That is a huge portion of the members that dug deep into their pockets — there is a great sense of camaraderie at the club, ” he said. He said a modernised look and a new members ’ lounge would be stand-out features of the rebuilt clubhouse. “Anytime there were functions at the club in the past, to a degree the members got squeezed out, ” he said. “This was particularly noticeable on a Saturday, when people were coming in and out, and the partitions were closed. “Now we have set up the separate members ’ area, we will be able to hold functions that will be truly independent of members. ” Although he has played at the Shepparton golf course since the 1980s, Mr
Hall said the impressive course meant he never became bored. “The course is built on sand hills, which are the only hills in Shepparton, ” he said. “Because it is built on sand, the water drains away quickly, so it is literally a 12-months-a-year course. “In the middle of winter, while other courses are feeling a bit waterlogged, the Shepparton golf course is always playable. ” He said new carpet and furnishings would give the clubhouse a revamped look, which he hoped would lead to increased catering opportunities. “It will have a modern feel, whilst still retaining the tradition of the golf club with honour boards and history. ” In the ½ve months prior to the ½re, Mr Hall said there was a noticeable increase of about 20 per cent turnover. He hoped that as the surrounding real estate continued to thrive, more locals would call the club their own and it would continue to grow, in addition to its 800-strong membership.

Generous support appreciated The Shepparton Golf Club was founded in 1922 and is a premier golÀng facility in the Goulburn Valley. The club has been fortunate during the years to have been graced by some fantastic committee personnel and members. I have been club captain since 2012, and have witnessed members volunteering their time to the club in many different areas. The ½re in January gutted the clubhouse, but not the spirit of our members. We were fortunate enough to save the memorabilia and tangible history of the club on the day, but more importantly no-one was injured. September will see the works completed and the long awaited reopening of the clubhouse. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has assisted in the rebuilding process. In conjunction with the committee, general manager Stephen Segrave has done a fabulous job co-ordinating the works. The temporary Pro Shop relocated beside the ½rst tee has been staffed by numerous volunteers, who have contributed countless hours in the past ½ve months. In order to complete the works to a high standard,
Club captain Mark Washington thanks members and the community for their ongoing support during the rebuild at the Shepparton Golf Club. the club has relied upon the donation of not only time, but money. Many of the members have committed to a monetary donation to assist with incidentals, which will complement the major works component. I would like to thank each and every one of our donors, including local trades and business people. Our golf club is a wonderful place to play golf and
socialise with friends. We have a loyal and committed membership that has been extremely generous during the rebuilding and refurbishment of the clubhouse. Thankyou to everyone who has contributed to the process, and there is no doubt that there are some fantastic times ahead for this great club. – Mark Washinton, captain

Club holds many good memories My love for the Shepparton Golf Club began back in the late 1980s. From the age of seven, I spent most of my spare time out there with Dad, caddying and enjoying the ‘‘after-the-round’’ atmosphere in the clubhouse with the boys. There are so many memories within those walls for me, and for everybody attached to the golf club. I have seen so many changes over my 25-odd years of being a member of the golf club. I remember when ex-professional Graeme Wright’’s Pro Shop was just a small shed, and the Spike Bar provided cold beers for golfers in the locker room while changing their shoes.
There are so many memories within those walls for me The clubhouse grew in size a few years ago with the addition of the outdoor deck area which gave everyone a great place to sit and look over the course.
More recently, after the ½re, the bar was moved to a hotel room and the clubhouse was a big white tent. Throughout all these changes, there was one thing that never changed —— members were still out there supporting the club. There has always been a great feeling of pride among members at the club, and not even a ½re could dampen their spirits or love of the game. The club has played a huge role in me becoming the golfer I am today, and also the person I am. I have so many friends at the club, young and old, and some who have passed that will always be a part of those walls. They are the people that have shaped the Shepparton Golf Club, and they are people that I am proud to call friends. I think all the members will be thrilled and relieved when the new and improved clubhouse opens. I for one am very proud of the members and committee for joining together to get the rebuild done, and I can’’t wait to get back there at the end of the year to see the changes. Club an integral part of Margot’’s life Margot Seymour was a stalwart at the Shepparton Golf Club for more than four decades. ““I worked at the club for nearly 30 years. I started out originally as a casual worker, typing letters while my children were in kindergarten,” Mrs Seymour, 82, said. As her children grew older, she worked her way up the ladder and eventually became manager. ““The part I loved most about the work was the people. I was very lucky through my job to interact with people who were out playing sport, and enjoying themselves at the beautiful course,” she said. ““I loved every moment.” Her late husband, Norman Seymour, was also heavily involved in the club and was president and club captain. ““Norman and I were both named honorary life members on the same day in 1990; that was a special memory,” Mrs Seymour said. ““I hope to get out there for the reopening of the clubhouse; I will be very pleased to see what they have done, because it is a beautiful golf course. ““I’’ve already heard they’’ve done a
great job with it, so I hope to be there in full žight on the night to help them celebrate.”â€? Mrs Seymour has retired from the sport, but recalled a stand-out memory was representing the club at The Doris Chambers Cup in Melbourne in the 1980s. Each club that participated in the event held a quali½er, and then the winning pair proceeded to the state ½nal. ““Betty Lorains and I went to Melbourne for the competition, and we brought the cup back to Shepparton,”â€? Mrs Seymour said. ““It was most unexpected, that I can tell you —— it was the highlight of my golf career. ““The cup hadn’’t been back to the Goulburn Valley until recently; our record stood there for a long time.”â€? During her time at the club Mrs Seymour also introduced ““Margot’’s Day”â€?, an event held each Sunday to boost player numbers. ““For some reason it was dif½cult to get Sunday players, so we had the day to get more players out there for a mixed event,”â€? she said. ““It always felt like a big family at the Shepparton Golf Club, it was wonderful.”â€?
Margot Seymour said she had spent so much time at the Shepparton Golf Club throughout the years, it felt like a second home.

Catering for a range of options
Catering manager Gary Goodman oversees everyday lunches to stand-up or sit-down functions.
Shepparton Golf Club catering manager Gary Goodman hopes its rebuilt clubhouse will attract more functions to the venue. ““We do a lot of functions and weddings here and it is nice to look after them,”â€? Mr Goodman said. ““In the past with the old room we catered for up to 180 people at a sit-down function. ““I think we will be able to cater for larger numbers now, and we have better facilities to accommodate for stand-up cocktail parties.”â€? Mr Goodman said prior to the ½re, the club was reaching out to the new estates in the surrounding area and promoting everyday lunches. ““We were in the middle of that when the ½re put a stop to it, but we’’ll get back to it now,”â€? he said. Although the kitchen was not damaged in the ½re, the gas, water and electricity services were cut off.
However, Mr Goodman said the catering services continued throughout the duration of the ½ve-month rebuild of the clubhouse. ““We had the services reinstated about two months ago, but before that we were able to use the bowls club facilities, which was very kind of them,”â€? he said. ““We kept going all the time and that’’s mainly catering for the golf players on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for lunches, and Thursday’’s cooked meal.”â€? Mr Goodman said throughout the years the club had always tried to stay updated with fundraising and ongoing projects to renew the facility. He said the members had been generous in making donations to the club to meet costs that were outside what the insurance covered. ““It’’s the members that make it a great club, and the golf course is impressive —— it is a great place with a good view.”â€?
No stopping tradition Erane Goodman said the Shepparton Golf Club Motel offers visitors a convenient place to stay at the heart of the golf course.
Motel could not be more convenient The Shepparton Golf Club Motel offers guests an expansive view of the impressive 18th green, as well as an extensive vista of the fairway. Motel caretaker and resident Erane Goodman said there were 11 rooms; six upstairs with their own balcony, plus ½ve ground-level rooms with private seating areas and outdoor access. The rooms are 30 m away from the ½rst and 10th tees, as well as the bar and dining room. ““It is really convenient and very handy for visitors to the Goulburn Valley who are attending functions or weddings here at the Shepparton Golf Club,”â€? Mrs Goodman said. ““All of the rooms have žoor-to-ceiling windows and it is a great spot, being right on the golf course.”â€?
Although the motel is located next door to the clubhouse, it was not directly affected by the ½re. ““The motel wasn’’t impacted, but we had a motel room set aside as a space for the ½re½ghters while they were ½ghting the blaze,”â€? she said. ““Throughout the rebuild of the clubhouse, a room was also used as an of½ce, and another room was used as a temporary bar.”â€? Mrs Goodman said people had still gathered at the club for social occasions with a positive demeanour, despite the temporary set-up throughout the reconstruction of the clubhouse. ““The club spirit was still strong,”â€? she said. Plans to renovate two of the motel rooms had been under way prior to the ½re, and are now back on track.
In Hospitality and Shepparton Golf Club – Two locals working together Over the years, In Hospitality and Shepparton Golf Club have grown together to form a solid and respected business relationship.
Every week before the Thursday competition, a number of gentlemen meet to have lunch at the Shepparton Golf Club. It is a tradition that long-standing member and former club president Russell Shellie, 76, said even a ½re could not bring to a halt. ““The ½re at the clubhouse happened on a Saturday, but the following Thursday we were still out there for lunch,”â€? he said. Mr Shellie said his whole family had been members at the Shepparton Golf Club at some stage throughout the years, including his three sons and daughter. ““My son Nigel continues on now; he has been the captain of the club and chairman of a number of committees, he’’s had more involvement than I have,”â€? Mr Shellie said. Mr Shellie’’s wife, Ruth, also played golf for many years and was involved in a number of committees. ““The club has really been an integral part of our recreational and family life,”â€? he said. Mr Shellie believes the rebuild of the club will give an enormous lift to the way members can enjoy the clubhouse and the surroundings. ““It will be nice when the clubhouse is rebuilt, but the spirit of getting together and enjoying one another’’s company is the main thing.”â€?

In his professional opinion, this club ’s the best It was April 1 in 1971 that the Àrst Pro Shop at the Shepparton Golf Club opened, a day Graeme Wright remembers well. Mr Wright was the ½rst golf professional appointed at the club, a position he held until June 30, 1995 — 24 years later. “I think the teaching side was the most rewarding part, ” he said. “If you could see someone improve, it was a bit like painting your house; when you can see the ½nished product, you ’re proud of what you have done. ” Mr Wright, 73, joined the club as a junior at the tender of age of 12 in 1953, with encouragement from his older brother, Llyod Wright. “I wanted to play football, but Llyod would drag me out to the golf course, ” Mr Wright said. “As my golf game improved, that was the end of the football for me. ” Llyod was 20 years Graeme ’s senior, and took up golf after he returned home following World War II. “That was back when the club was in its sand scrape days, ” Mr Wright said. “Llyod was a club president and was well and truly involved in development of the new course and greens in the 1950s, as well as the clubhouse. “There were 40 members of the club who put in 120 guineas each in the 1950s, which gave them membership for life, and enabled the club to purchase extra land to put more holes in. ” Mr Wright was a child at the time, and his brother
loaned him the money so he could become a life subscriber. Mr Wright went on to become club champion seven times, and to win three consecutive Goulburn Valley Championships — in 1968, 1969 and 1970. He said the most memorable moment from more than half a century of involvement in the sport was the day he turned professional.
The Shepparton Golf Club is great, it ’s viewed as the leading club in the district, and everyone is excited to see the Ànished product once the repairs are all done. Mr Wright still plays golf once a week, and said he was looking forward to checking out the new bar in the rebuilt clubhouse. “The Shepparton Golf Club is great, it ’s viewed as the leading club in the district, and everyone is excited to see the ½nished product once the repairs are all done. ” Graeme Wright was the longest-standing golf professional at the Shepparton Golf Club Pro Shop.

Family involvement shows no sign of stopping For more than half a century the Brain family has been creating memories at the Shepparton Golf Club.
Generations of the Brain family have been members at the Shepparton Golf Club since the 1940s.
From birdies to bogeys, four generations of the family have been playing golf at the club, with a new addition set to make it ½ve generations. Tom Brain Snr, 83, said his father, Aaron Robert Brain, was the ½rst of the family to join the club in the 1940s, when he arrived in Shepparton. “He was a member for 30 years, ” Tom Snr said. In the 1950s Tom Snr was a keen tennis player, but when he retired from the sport at the age of 22, he exchanged his racquet for a set of golf clubs.
“The Shepparton golf course is magni½cent, it is one of the best in Victoria, ” he said. Tom Snr played in three A-grade ½nals, but was beaten each time by champions, including Graeme Wright. His sons Tom Brain Jnr, 59, and John Brain, 57, are also keen golfers. “We are all mad golfers, you make all your mates out here at the course, it ’s a great place, ” Tom Jnr said. “The rebuilt clubhouse will be great for the club itself and also in terms of functions, pro½tability and the future. ” John has been a member of the Shepparton Golf Club for 35 years, and his wife Heather Brain is also a keen player, and the handicap manager for the ladies ’ division.
“It is handy because we live just around the corner, ” John said. He said the best thing about golf was the camaraderie of the club. Tom Jnr ’s son Aaron Brain created history last month, when he achieved the lowest handicap out of anyone in the Brain family. Aaron ’s handicap is six, while his father Tom Jnr ’s is seven. “He just got me by a point — he ’s counting the points! ” Tom Jnr said. The youngest addition to the family, nine-month-old Alexander Brain, has the family ’s hopes of a professional pegged on his small shoulders. “He ’s going to be the one, our chances are all dashed, so we are all resting our hopes on the next generation, ” Tom Jnr said.
Keeping with long-held tradition The Lincoln family has extensive history in the Shepparton Golf Club, dating back several generations to the club ’s infancy. It is a tradition that Peter Lincoln, 72, has proudly carried on. His grandmother, Margaret Lincoln, was club champion in 1929 and 1932. “Her name is on the honour board under HB, which was the initials of her husband — that is how it was in those days, ” he said. “The whole family played golf; my parents Max and Marion Lincoln were members of the club for nearly 30 years. ” Mr Lincoln became a member at Shepparton Golf Club as a junior in 1956, and he continues to play to this day.
“I get out there a couple of times a week now that I ’m retired; I was a pharmacist here in Shepparton, ” he said. His wife, Del Lincoln, has also been heavily involved in the sport, and they have both held roles on the club ’s committee throughout the years. “We have both been president and captain of the Shepparton Golf Club in separate divisions, ” Mr Lincoln said. “That was about 25 years ago and at one time our captaincies crossed over. “There were a lot of arguments about rules and regulations that year! ” Mr Lincoln said his wife organised a group for beginners during her nearly 10 years of committee involvement, with the hope of expanding the women ’s membership

of the club. “She has done her bit, and she has received the Doyle Family Award for distinguished sportsmanship and service at the golf club, ” Mr Lincoln said. He said the friendly golf club had kept its positive spirit, despite having been dealt a rough hand in the past months. “There has been a lot to deal with following the ½re, with the temporary situations and Pro Shop, but the club has gotten through it, ” Mr Lincoln said. “There is a lot of good times out there and I hope to continue playing golf as long as I can stand. “You don ’t always play well; it ’s the social side that keeps you coming back. ”
Golf has proven a popular pastime in Peter Lincoln ’s family.

Game and its devotees prove supportive in challenging times It was the luck of the draw that sparked Greta Keenan ’s interest in golf in 1976, and almost 40 years later she is still enjoying the sport. Mrs Keenan, 74, said unbeknown to her at the time, her father-in-law, Jack Keenan, entered her name in a raf¾e at Portarlington, and she won a golf buggy. “In those days I was much younger and I enjoyed playing tennis, but I thought, ‘I ’m not going to be able to play tennis forever, ” she said. “I ½gured, ‘I ’ve got the golf buggy, I may as well buy some clubs ’, and that is exactly the reason I started playing golf. ” Her husband, Kevin Keenan, was also a keen golfer. While the pair travelled throughout
TIMELINE 1924 The role of the ½rst club captain was appointed to Mr John Stubbs.
Australia and to the United States for business, Mrs Keenan said they played golf wherever they went. “For about ½ve years we became gypsies; I started playing golf here at the Shepparton Golf Club and then we moved to Sydney, then to Philadelphia in the United States for a year, ” she said. “Golf was my salvation; it was a social sport and a great way to meet people, especially when we were in America. ” On returning to country Victoria, the couple purchased the Tudor House Motor Inn on Wyndham St, and began playing golf at the Shepparton course once again. “It is a wonderful club, ” Mrs Keenan said. “In 2000, Kevin suffered a brain aneurism, and I became his carer. The club itself was such a support. It was a pretty horri½c time, but
1925 The ½rst ladies ’ committee was formed; Mesdames Morrison,V. Stubbs, Grutzner and Miss Kendall were appointed. This same year the ½rst Club Championship was played, and it was won by bank manager George L. Swan.
1922 The current site of the Shepparton Golf Club was established in April, 1922. Mr T. N. Muntz was elected as the ½rst president. In June that year, a mixed foursome event was held, with Fairleys donating two balls for trophies. The course consisted of nine sand scrape holes.
I couldn ’t speak higher of the members at the club — it was like a family, really. ” Mrs Keenan said the rebuild of the clubhouse would be fantastic for all members. “The temporary marquee has been good and we have all used it, but there comes a time where you are longing to sit in beautiful clubhouse in the stunning surrounds, ” she said. “The rebuilt clubhouse will have new ¾oor coverings, furniture and airconditioning, which will be wonderful. “There will also be new heating but they have kept the beautiful open ½replace, which was part of the original building — it is nice to retain that history. ”
Greta Keenan says golf has been her salvation throughout the years.

1950s
With the acquisition of 8 ha of land owned by Mr W. Rudd for £700, the Shepparton Golf Club extended the course to 18 holes. President F.O. Cameron commenced a tree planting and course beauti½cation program at the same time.
A water scheme was proposed and an 8.5 cm main pipe from the Goulburn River to the course was completed.
Sam Berriman, a golf course architect, was engaged to develop and design an 18-hole grass green championship course. Work progressed during 1957 and the committee borrowed £2000 for the course construction. Late in 1956 a motion to build a clubhouse was passed.

The course was extended to 14 holes.
The effects of the war were felt in Shepparton. During these years, voluntary labour enabled nine holes to remain playable. According to Ron Michael ’s More Birds Than Birdies, one veteran golfer said there was a human silhouette nailed to a tree below the 16th fairway, as target practice was conducted in that area during wartime.
Electricity became available and was connected to the club. About 11 ha of land adjoining the club, owned by Mr Nicker, was purchased.
The new clubhouse was opened and the Shepparton Golf bowling green was developed.
The Pro Shop opened at the Shepparton Golf Club and Graeme Wright was appointed as the ½rst golf professional.
