Driving force behind new business In a word, the gleaming white courier van parked out the front of Jamie McKenna’s house spells opportunity. By LIAM NASH Spotting the astounding growth in Tatura was enough for him and his family to take the leap into business ownership, launching Tatura Small Freight on February 1. “I thought with the way Tatura was going, I thought it was a good time to start a business,” Jamie said. “The experience has been good so far; we have had plenty of help from the other businesses here in Tatura. “It has been a very positive start.” Adopting the slogan ‘Servicing Shepparton, Bendigo and in between’, Tatura Small Freight is exactly what it sounds like. “We are a courier business that operates between Shepparton and Bendigo,” Jamie said. “The business services all the towns in between — Mooroopna, Tatura, Rushworth, Stanhope, Elmore, Rochester. “I alternate two different routes between Shepparton and Bendigo.

“One day via Mooroopna, Tatura, Murchison, Rushworth, Colbinabbin and Axedale; the other route via Mooroopna, Tatura, Rochester, Elmore and Epsom. “We leave Shepparton every morning at 9 am, arrive in Bendigo 12 pm and are back in Shepparton at 3 pm.” Running Monday to Friday, Tatura Small Freight is a bona fide family operation, and is just about as local as it gets. Jamie, having lived and breathed Tatura for a large portion of his life, felt obliged to jump aboard the hypetrain surrounding the town. And as for the future of the business, he’s willing to take it one day — or drive — at a time. “I worked in mining when I was younger, and then mainly factory work — I was at Tatura Milk for 22 years,” he said. “I’m from Shepparton and have been here about 24 years, and thought it was time to start a business. “We’re happy with seeing where things end up.”

Library on a new page as upgrades completed Libraries are changing and the refurbishments to Tatura’s facility bring something new to the community. By JAMES BENNETT After a 12-month closure in 2020, the $2 million upgrades and renovations increased the overall size of the library.

The Tatura Library is double the space of its former self.

The upgrades cost about $2 million.

There's more room for children to explore.

Check out the Tatura Library and what it has on offer.

The meeting room.

The Tatura Library reopened to the public recently.

There’s now double the amount of space, which includes a dedicated children’s area and multipurpose meeting room. The upgrades also include quiet reading areas and an IT zone featuring new public computers. On the exterior of the library, the access has improved and provides more space for families, carers and prams. “It allows us to offer more in ways of events and program,” Tatura librarian Kerrie Douglas said. “There a lot more public computers, TVs and you don’t have to come into the library just to borrow a book; you can come to sit and relax. “Libraries are so much more than a place to borrow books; while the Tatura library still offers that service, they also serve as a great place to make social connections.” Kerrie said while the meeting room had a capacity of about 10, there would be opportunities to increase that number in the future. The Tatura Library is located at 12–16 Casey St. For more information phone 1300 374 765. The Tatura Library is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 5 pm; and Saturday from 10 am to noon. It is closed Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.

The Tatura Library was closed throughout most of 2020.

Car care needs catered for Envisage the ultimate head-turner; sun bouncing off an immaculately groomed vehicle, creating a rousing reflection to all passers-by. By LIAM NASH This the end product being offered at Hussln Auto Detailing. Owner Cam Scorey runs the show at 51 Hogan St, Tatura, and is ready to roll with an array of services to revamp rides to their former glory. As regional Victoria’s exclusive Modesta paint and coating installation centre — one of only 12 in the country — Hussln Auto Detailing is more than equipped to meet the car detailing needs of Tatura.

He goes the extra mile — and he’s not laying it on thick when he says bodywork is only half the Hussln experience. “Aside from our premium products, we offer old-fashioned customer service with pick-up and drop-offs. “I will have a full retail shop set up in the next six months, with all your car-care products as there is currently nowhere in Tatura to get them.”

Specialists: Hussln Auto Detailing stocks Modesta paint protection products.

“We offer premium detail — interiors, exteriors, paint polishing and paint protection,” Cam said. Relocating from Merrigum in early January, Cam is bringing his passion for perfection to Tatura — and it’s safe to say the public are picking up what he’s putting down. “It’s coming up 11 years when I first started the business in Perth, and I moved to the Goulburn Valley around six years ago,” he said. “I decided it was time for a bigger facility to be able to showcase more. “Tatura have responded really well; we are booked out for the first six weeks.” Business is roaring, equating to two things — Tatura has plenty of beaming smiles on owners’ faces to accompany their sparkling rides. “The most satisfying part would have to be the end result, as well as the customer’s face when they walk in,” Cam said. “People will say, ‘my three-year-old car didn’t even look this good brand new’.” It’s clear to see why Cam pulls in work from Seymour through to Wangaratta, as well as from Echuca and beyond.

One to trust: Cam Scorey is the go-to-guy for car detailing in Tatura.

New mural brings history to life Tatura’s wartime camps have been captured in a vivid mural in the centre of town. By CHARMAYNE ALLISON Painted on a wall of the Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum, the artwork was created by artist Jimmy from Juddy Roller over seven days. It depicts the region’s three prisoner of war camps and four camps for internees. The rows of army huts were constructed from galvanized iron and included recreation huts, kitchen and mess huts, as well as ablution blocks. One side is painted in black and white, but it gradually transitions to colour. This aims to represent how POWs and internees turned their bleak existence behind barbed wire into more livable conditions. This included planting lawns and productive gardens and pursuing craft, education, sport, music and theatre — and even the invention of a Kegel (skittle) alley.

Museum president George Ferguson hoped the mural would increase residents’ awareness of their local history. And maybe even pique their interest to learn more. “We’d love people to come have a look, and they’re free to come into the museum if they’d like to know more,” he said. The Tatura group of seven internment camps were established in this area because of the distance from a sea port and availability of adequate food and water. Holding between four and 8000 people at any one time, they were located at Tatura, Rushworth, Dhurringile Mansion, Murchison and Graytown. Built during World War II, the camps were used to hold anyone who was considered a threat — including German, Italian and Japanese families and POWs. “It’s a dark side of history that people were interned there, but a necessary part,” Mr Ferguson said. “In hindsight, you might say a lot of aspects of the war were unnecessary, but when the threat of invasion

Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum president George Ferguson with the new mural.

was so imminent, people were understandably terrified.” None of the camps are now accessible, as they are on private property, meanwhile Dhurringile Mansion is now a part of HM Prison Dhurringile. But collections of letters, documents and reports from the camps are on

display at Tatura Museum — plus the new mural — now brings that history to life. Mr Ferguson was thrilled by the artwork. “Ever since our building was extended in 2018, we’ve been wanting to put a mural on the new wall,” he said. “We’re very happy with it.”

A new mural on the wall of Tatura Museum brings the history of the region's wartime camps to life.

Tatura Park upgrades welcomed From the hustle and bustle of International Dairy Week to monster Saturdays in Goulburn Valley League Football, Tatura Park gets put through the mill week-in, week-out. By LIAM NASH Now the town’s central sporting complex is even more ready for whatever is thrown its way. Greater Shepparton City Council’s $53,523 recent funding injection into Tatura Park has brought on a multitude of structural upgrades. It’s a thriving agricultural mecca at times, and the latest rap sheet of improvements are sure to please its user groups. Flooring sub-bases have been added to the stable block, skillion and chicken sheds to allow livestock secure footing along the runs, while safety measures have been furthered with the addition of new rails and gates to the cattle loading ramp. Tatura Dressage — the equestrian branch of Tatura Football Club — was

quick to applaud council’s latest commitment to the ground. “To bring the venue back to life when we’ve needed it shows the dedication from council,” Tatura Dressage events director Sue Terry said. “It just shows what a tenant of a ground can do — and the improvements prove the operators are doing an exceptional job. “It certainly is a feel-good situation.” Happy animals, and even happier owners, will appreciate the abundance of tender love and care shown to keep Tatura Park in shape.

Tatura Scouts has plenty to offer If you’re looking to get your child into something that can help their development, why not consider signing them up for Scouts? By JAMES BENNETT The 1st Tatura Scout group meets every Monday night at the Scout Hall on Martin St. Group leader Mark Sargent said the Joey section started from age five and offered a wide range of opportunities for all children. “We focus on small group leadership and it can range from leading an activity or to grow by assisting,” he said. “There’s a lot of support we provide for the community and that plays into the leadership we develop in the children.

be something small such as arranging a weekend bushwalk for fellow members,” Mark said. “There’s also the social aspect. You make many friends when you join the Scouts.” Mark said Tatura Scouts was growing but there was always room for more. He said the group was also looking for parents to help out, and they did not need to have any prior experience with Scouts. For more information, visit: https://scoutsvictoria.com.au/

Life skills including how to make fire are just some of the things the Tatura Scouts teach members.

“We’re not just limited to the hall, we do get out into the Tatura environment, teaching the Joeys, Cubs and Scouts about what’s around them and how they can care for it. “As they move through the different ranks of Scouts, there are plenty of different opportunities and it could

Clean up with Tat Wash

“It will have a LaserWash 360 which is the premium brand of touch-free carwash,” he said.

Don’t get caught driving dirty in Tatura, with Tat Wash!—!the town’s newest car care hub!—!just around the corner from opening.

“We’ll also be set up with three manual bays, three vacuum bays and a dog wash.”

By LIAM NASH Smack bang in the centre of town at 104 Hogan St, Tat Wash is a venture belonging to Goulburn Valley locals Jamie Fawcett and his father-in-law Kevin Barzen. Jamie revealed he was drawn into business ownership after seeing others strike pay dirt through the enterprise.

“I’m an electrician by trade and I work with some of these guys, and noticed they do well out of the (carwash business),” he said.

Adjacent to the soap and suds, something big is on the way with locals sure to be licking their lips at Jamie’s proposition for the business’ future.

“The opportunity to purchase a block of land came up so I took it. Taking the risk as they say.”

“There’s a vacant block of land at the front of the property with enough space to put a small café/sit down area,” Jamie said.

Eager to flip the switch on Tat Wash, Jamie ran through its list of features.

“We are going to get the carwash started first, but that is stage two of the plan.”

For the pair, becoming immersed in the community is just as important as providing a top-notch service. “Tatura isn’t a commercialised town yet. It’s not like you have a big company in the town taking the money out, the money seems to stay in the town, and I think that’s what they pride themselves on,” Jamie said. “We’ll employ locals, sponsor local clubs … that is being a part of the community. “That was our grand plan; whatever you give Tat, the town gives back to you.”

Great community spirit in Tatura!

The $2 million redevelopment of the Tatura Library is complete and now open. What a wonderful facility this will be for the whole community. The Mural at Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps has been completed by Jimmy Dvate. It depicts prisoner of war camps that used to be in the region.

Tatura Community House has been busy collecting excess fruit and vegetables to preserve and give back to the community. There has been a lot of uncertainty created with the global COVID-19 pandemic and by the lockdowns here in Victoria. Let’s get behind and continue to support our local businesses and buy local. Keep checking in on neighbours, family and friends as we move into the next stage with vaccinations becoming available this year.

Making men feel welcome Uniting men has been the name of the game at Tatura Community House lately. By LIAM NASH As a primarily female-driven enterprise, the not-for-profit organisation has begun rolling out programs — namely IT skills training and fishing trips — for males to engage in. “If you look at the Tatura Community House demographic, it’s about 90 per cent female,” staff member Tom Boocock said. “It’s very rare to have men in the building.

“Anyone is welcome; those on the trip can expect to meet some new people as well as learn some fishing skills along the way. “It’s about making new experiences — as it is generally a combination of young and old people.” Learning the ins and outs of a different kind of net has served as another way of engaging males at Tatura Community House.

“The idea is to get more men involved in the community house as they tend to be more reluctant.”

“The tech training was funded under a supporting mental health scheme through Australia Post,” Tom said.

The days out at Lake Nagambie for some old-fashioned angling have proved a success in the past.

“It was only a couple of thousand dollars, but we’ve managed to stretch it out quite well.

And according to Tom, casting a wide net is the key to encouraging more men to jump in with both feet.

“The training is for anyone with devices or phones, we’re just trying to help them communicate more.

“The fishing trip is always fun, everyone has had a great time at the ones we’ve hosted,” he said.

“There should be about three people helping out for anyone who wants to come along.

Soaking up retail success Adapting to overcome the turbulence of 2020 has left SOAK Beauty owner Sandy Potter with the “good kind of headache”. By LIAM NASH COVID-19 raged, the beauty therapy industry was in the dark, and money had to be made. So, Sandy branched out into women’s clothing in tandem with the introduction of various homewares. Now, thanks to demand, she needs more space. In order to march on with the business’ new avenues, Sandy is solving the problem by expanding the shopfront to cater for the amplified interest from Tatura’s public. “Currently we are expanding our retail space at the front of the shop to stock more of our women’s clothing,” she said.

“The idea behind the expansion was to become more diverse during COVID-19. “It just gave us the option of selling online, and it has been supported really well by the community.” Sandy has operated SOAK Beauty since 2010. Carving a reputation as a premium salon for more than a decade has kept the customers streaming through the doors at 137 Hogan St.

SOAK owner Sandy Potter has seen a great return on her range of women's clothing.

“We sell all sorts of homeware, as well as ladies’ clothing from pants, tops and pyjamas.

She hasn’t compromised her existing practices through the business’ latest offshoots, but rather has enhanced SOAK Beauty’s profile by diversifying.

“As well as those, we still offer our usual cosmetic services.

“So far, the response has been amazing — I’ve ordered clothing up

to winter already. I’ve also sold most of what I had initially ordered in,” she said. “I like to challenge myself, and every time I have offered something different, Tatura has got behind

it — we have got such an amazing community here. “As for the future, I will just have to see, but for now, I’m just going to keep on what I’m doing, and doing it well.”

Education for all ages Tatura Community House is delivering the essential skills to help power all ages through life. By LIAM NASH Following a heavily interrupted school year due to COVID-19, the organisation has placed an onus on bridging the learning gap for children with its Letters and Numbers sessions. “We have got the skills on the committee — our volunteers are equipped and ready to help kids out,” house manager Leanne Button said. “It’s more about bring them confidence so they feel more confident to have a go. “Often just by delivering a concept in a different way, kids can really click on to that.” Letters and Numbers ran during February and will continue throughout March. Aimed at students in Years 5 to 10, the one-on-one approach is a strategy which gets results, according to Leanne.

“Sometimes teachers in a classroom can’t adapt to everyone’s individual needs, but when you can work more one-on-one you can achieve quicker results,” she said. “It can be a game-changer for kids, to click them over from just getting by to actually understanding concepts, and that goes for literacy and numeracy as well.” Children aren’t the only ones getting ahead at Tatura Community House. It is also rolling out pre-accredited courses in learning English as a second language throughout term two. Additionally, literacy and numeracy lessons are being offered under the umbrella of adult education. Leanne said the sessions were great confidence-boosters for those looking to touch up on the basics of language and mathematics.

The first Letters and Numbers sessions have kicked off at Tatura Library.

“We’re funded to provide adult education from the community house,” she said. “This term we’ve got … English as a second language as well as providing literacy and numeracy for adults.

By LIAM NASH The Tatura Games Club answers all of the above questions.

“It is going to be a word-of-mouth thing — we are looking to match up people who might want to play chess, cards, or a specific game,” she said.

be some keen players out there who just need people to have fun with and test themselves, and we’d love to get them in.” Keeping the mind active through practising cognitive skills is a massive part of Tatura Games Club’s conception. And while a bit of healthy competition never goes astray, Leeane said the social aspect, paired with the mental health advantages, was the club’s main aim. “It is for the social aspect, but it’s also important as people of all ages need to exercise the brain and that helps

to better mental health outcomes,” she said. “From both a social and an academic point of view, we can see those activities benefit people.” Existing board game buffs will know of the many benefits provided through the club. And for beginners, there are no prerequisites, apart from an appetite for fun. Tatura Games Club runs from 10 am to noon at Tatura Community House on Mondays during the school term. Entry fee is $2.

Shop floor means more on offer from Oakridge Designs Bespoke furniture painting business Oakridge Designs is stepping into the limelight in Tatura. By LIAM NASH What began as painting workshops soon burgeoned, and after years with brush in hand, owner Meghann Talarico has put pen to paper on an opportune expansion at 129 Hogan St. “I felt there was a niche market to be filled, and so I started out running the workshops out of our farm property in Tatura,” she said. “The opportunity came up to move into a shopfront, and I felt like it was a great way to be involved in the community, to have that presence in the middle of town.” Helping people breathe life into family heirlooms and fulfilling restoration hobbyists’ dreams has been the driving force behind Oakridge Designs.

“I have had plenty of lovely ladies come in who I’ve taught to repaint and refinish their furniture for a fraction of the price of buying new,” Meghann said. “Not only locals, but also people coming in from all over the state as well as inquiry from interstate now too.” But setting up shop is a whole new ball game. Managing the business while practising as a registered nurse, it’s safe to say Meghann will have plenty on her plate with Oakridge Designs’ latest foray. It’s far from uncharted territory for the mother of two, however. “Even through home schooling last year I still managed to grow the business,” Meghann said.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the community.” Now that Oakridge Designs boasts a sparkling shopfront, Meghann has kept her promise to complement the business’ original model by providing a line of elegant Australian-made goods. “There will be a studio at the back half of the shop where I’ll continue to run workshops, and the front of the shop will have homeware, décor and gifts,” she said ahead of the store’s opening. “As part of my business model supporting Australian-made from the start, I’ve now felt even more of an importance to support the small boutique businesses — particularly after a COVID pandemic.”

Going for broke: Meghann Talarico is taking her business, Oakridge Designs, into Tatura’s main street.

Matters - Tatura

March 2021

A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY Dear Tatura community, As we bid farewell to the whirlwind that was 2020, we cautiously welcome 2021 and all the promises it holds – hopefully! With visitor restrictions, mask wearing and strict hand hygiene regulations still ongoing, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the entire community’s ongoing understanding, compliance and compassion as we navigate towards a ‘COVID normal’ day-to-day routine in an attempt to keep our staff and residents as safe as possible. Although we are now almost three whole months into 2021, on behalf of all of us here at Parkvilla I would like to express our thanks the Tatura Lions Club as well as the Ladies Auxiliary for their lovely Christmas gifts that were very welcomed as we rounded out last year with much-needed festive celebrations. We have recently recommenced our Community Reference Committee meetings this month and have enjoyed face-to-face gatherings once again after a long period of collaborating virtually. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated committee that represents the Tatura community and I am very much looking forward to what we can achieve this year. We held our first fundraising event for 2021, with the annual 100 Lap Challenge successfully going ahead on February 20th.

We collectively appreciate all the work that goes into organising this event with generous donations to the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. I’m very much looking forward to what this year holds, and hopefully we can see a lot of the friendly faces we missed in 2020 again this year – maybe even mask free at some stage! Thank you again to you all for your ongoing support and please feel free to offer any suggestions or feedback that can assist us in improving the services that we provide – we’re always here to talk. Take care,

Lisa Waite GV Health’s Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Director of Nursing

Thank you to Generations Op Shop in Tatura for their recent donation of $2,000. These funds will be put towards new outdoor furniture for our residents – fantastic!

Love was in the air at Parkvilla on February 14 this year. Here’s a snap of our residents preparing heart-shaped shortbreads for St Valentine’s Day, and they were delicious!

We’ve been having some lovely weather in Tatura lately, so the team at Parkvilla decided to take advantage of the sunshine and dine al fresco for lunch!

Christmas at Parkvilla was enjoyed by all last year, as you can tell by our beautifully decorated and colour-coordinated tree!
