Shepparton has all your Christmas needs covered donating gifts to be distributed by the Community Fund Goulburn Valley. Christmas carols will ring out, elves will roam the mall and craft activities are planned where children can make their own Christmas stockings. Mr Innes-Irons said the Shepparton Show Me van would be stationed in the mall and would also travel around town spreading Christmas cheer and giving away prizes with the spinning wheel. The van ’s location will be advertised daily in the local media. Craft and produce stalls will be dotted around the mall on Saturday, December 13 for the Rotary market. Soap, fruit and vegetables, cookware, furniture, collectables, baby gifts and knitted toys will be available for sale and Rotarians will be cooking their renowned barbecue lunch. Shepparton has long been considered a premier shopping destination and Mr Innes-Irons said the exceptional service and wide range of goods offered by businesses was a great incentive to shop locally. A full program of Shepparton Show Me activities and their dates, times and venues is listed on page 7.
Shepparton Show Me is fostering the Christmas spirit and encouraging people to shop locally by staging a variety of free and fun family activities during December.
Shepparton Show Me marketing co-ordinator Mat Innes-Irons says Shepparton has all your Christmas shopping needs covered.
Orders are now being taken for our yummy Christmas Puddings We also have a range of ‘Ready to go cakes’ or come in and let us create your own personalised icecream cake. Try something different this Christmas . . . Also available for birthdays.
Santa, horse and cart rides, an animal nursery, face painting, a jumping castle and music are just some of the program of events scheduled for Shepparton ’s Maude St Mall. Activities are also planned for Riverside Plaza, Shepparton Marketplace and Emerald Bank Leisure Land. Shepparton Show Me marketing co-ordinator Mat Innes-Irons said the former Jetset Travel premises in the mall would be transformed into Santa ’s workshop with decorations, a Christmas tree and the all-important Santa chair. Mr Innes-Irons said children would be able to call in, give Santa their Christmas lists and have their photo taken with the jolly man. Also located in the workshop will be the charity gift wrapping stall where, for a gold coin donation, shoppers can have their gifts wrapped with all proceeds distributed to local organisations. Individuals will have the opportunity to support the Community Giving Tree by purchasing and

Literary gifts for everyone From science kits to solar robots and signed special edition books by famed authors, Collins Booksellers Shepparton is no ordinary book store. Helen Sofra, who has owned the Maude St store for eight years with husband Joe, said they aimed to stock unique items. “We try to stock things that are a little bit different, and that you won ’t Ànd anywhere else in Shepparton, ” Mrs Sofra said. “There is such a variety that there will literally be something for everyone. ” Mrs Sofra said many customers were surprised by the huge range of products in-store. “They don ’t expect to Ànd this in Shepparton; it is something they would expect from a larger book store in Melbourne, ” she said. “There are Àction books, sport, science titles, and biographies which are probably our biggest seller, plus the children ’s range. ” Autographed copies are from book signings held this year with authors Peter FitzSimons, Roland Perry, Graeme Base
and John Howard, to name a few. Mrs Sofra said a big range of classics were available as well, including special editions with hard covers and ribbon page markers which made beautiful gifts. Also new to the store this year is Australian Geographic stock. “Science experiment kits are something we have never stocked before now, but there hasn ’t been an Australian Geographic store in Shepparton for years, so we thought it was a good idea, ” she said. Bobble art and gift lines from television favourites such as Big Bang Theory and Doctor Who are also available. The store supports Australian authors as well as many local and self-published authors, which is one way the family-owned business supports the community. Collins Booksellers Shepparton has also donated more than $20 000 in money raised from book signing events to charities.
Stuck for gift ideas? Georgia Sofra and the team at Collins Booksellers can help you Ànd something for all ages.

Advent of a new tradition booked on calendar It was a post on a social media website that gave Shepparton’s Annie Clark the idea for a Christmas book Advent calendar, a unique way to count down the days to December 25.
Siblings Olivia, Shannon and Mackenzie Clark, love the unique way their family celebrates the lead-up to Christmas and gift giving on the day.
Mrs Clarke has gift wrapped 25 books, and her children will unwrap a book a day, beginning on December 1. “I saw the idea on Facebook, and then I shared it with some friends, and everyone was saying, ‘Oh, what a great idea, ’ ” Mrs Clark said. “The kids think it is great they can ’t wait, they want to start opening them now; they actually asked if they could put more books under the tree so they could start early. ” While Mrs Clark said it may not altogether replace the chocolate Advent calendar in the household, it was a way for the family to wind down at the end of the day. “The idea is that the children pick a book to unwrap and then they can sit down and read it together, ” she said. “The books aren ’t in any order, except for The Night Before Christmas, which I wrapped in distinctive paper so we would know it was the last one to open. ” It is also a cost-effective solution, and Mrs Clark said she was able to use books the family already owned. “You can do it on the cheap without buying anything new, you could put
colouring books, chapter books, a diary ary or a cd — it could be anything really. ” At Christmas lunch with extended family, Mrs Clark said they also played ed a gift exchange game of Kris Kringle with the adults, which was always a winner. Each participant brings a wrapped gift to the value of $30. On the day, all the gifts are placed in a pile on the Áoor, and then numbered ed slips of paper are made for the number ber of participants (which is equal to the number of gifts), and each person selects a number. The person who has number one starts the game, by choosing a gift, opening it and showing it to everyone. e The person who chose number two then selects a gift, and either chooses to open that present, or can “steal ” any previously opened gift. If your gift is stolen, you then open the wrapped gift that the thief has chosen to swap for your opened present. The game continues until the last present is unwrapped. “It is a bit of fun and it is not like you have to pre-plan however many people there will be, if someone doesn ’t show up you just leave one present out, ” Mrs Clark said. “Or if an extra person decides to come and wants to participate, you just tell them to bring a gift to the value of $30. ”

Throughout several years of the game, game gifts have included electric salt and pepper shakers, wine glasses, decorative cushions, Village Cinema gift vouchers, light Àttings, cash and household items. “When you are buying a gift it is not like you are buying it for a speciÀc person, so it has to be kind of universal, ” she said. “It can be quite comical as well, and people wrap gift vouchers in things like cylinders to have a bit of fun with it. “The game can take half-an-hour to an hour, because people procrastinate about what presents are left, and what they think things could be. ” Mrs Clark ’s eldest daughter Olivia said it was fun to watch. “It is funny seeing people steal the present that they want, ” Olivia said.
Whether you are looking for a Kris Kringle for work colleagues, friends or family, these gifts available in Shepparton will keep you within your budget, with ideas in $10, $20 and $30 to $50 price limits.

Catch a big one this Christmas Find everything you need to catch a fish or enjoy the great outdoors at Trelly’s Fishing and Hunting World this Christmas. Store owner Steve Threlfall said the Corio St store carried a huge range of Àshing, hunting and camping gear, and an extensive range of Àrearms for sporting shooters or farmers ’ pest control needs. Mr Threlfall said there were items priced from $2 right through to Àshing reels for $1000. “We offer something for the beginner or price-conscious person right through to the professional, ” he said. “A lot of people don ’t realise we have a huge range of price-pointed items that will match or rival big box stores, and they come with free professional advice from experienced staff. “We always encourage the correct use of Àrearms and are happy to offer our advice and knowledge on all safety aspects and licensing. ” He said this included a vast knowledge of Àrearm regulations, and the store could help out with inquiries relating to Àrearms and compliance. clothes including Shimano and Stoney Creek is also available, plus swags for camping enthusiasts. “Fishing is a relaxing family activity and it is also therapeutic for those who lead a busy life, ” Mr Threlfall said. The store stocks locally and Australianmade products, which Mr Threlfall said were ideally suited to Àshing conditions in the Goulburn Valley. “These guys put back into the community a lot of their knowledge, as far as how to Àsh and what to use and how to use it — you get the full picture from the manufacturer right through to retailer, ” he said. “Very often these people behind the scenes who are lure-making are good advocates of Àshing and the beneÀts it brings to the wider community, which you can ’t get from overseas. ” If you are looking for a gift outside the square, then archery gear may be the perfect option. Mr Threlfall said the sport had become more popular in recent years, particularly around the Christmas period.

The Shepparton family enjoys an extended C Christmas period of celebration with family ggatherings taking up most weekends, i interspersed with mid-week functions for t children ’s various school and sporting the a associations. It is a hectic time, but one that the family looks f forward to each year. For Mrs Serra, in particular, the festive season i highly anticipated as it allows her to indulge her is p passion for creative decorating. Each year she chooses a different colour s scheme and decorates the Christmas tree a accordingly. Last year it was Tiffany blue, this y year she is undecided but is considering a more t traditional theme. Mrs Serra extends the decorating to a private c courtyard at the family home, creating an a ambient space to gather with friends for preC Christmas drinks. Traditions established years ago are followed, i including attending Christmas Eve mass. On Christmas morning cousins arrive for the o opening of presents and then it is time for lunch w Mrs Serra ’s relatives, the Purss family, with b before catching up with the Serra family for d dinner. Mrs Serra admits cooking is not her forte; she l leaves that to others and focuses instead on s styling the eating area. Each year she handm makes the bonbons for the Christmas table, and p personalises each one with thoughtful trinkets. “I love the lead-up to Christmas, it ’s such a s social and happy time, ” Mrs Serra said.

Keeping you connected this Christmas The Telstra Stores in Shepparton are celebrating Christmas with a new location in Maude St Mall and the continuing rollout of the National Broadband Network. The Telstra Store in High St moved to the Target arcade on Tuesday, November 18. Telstra Stores Shepparton managing director Scott Kelly said the central location would allow the business to display new Telstra products to more people — just in time for Christmas. “It ’s the perfect timing for our customers, ” he said. “We wanted a location that would ensure customers get face-toface contact with a local Telstra representative and the opportunity to discuss the way of the future with the NBN. ” The NBN is a new communications network replacing the old copper system to give Australian homes faster internet and phone access. Telstra is now offering a new range of home and entertainment bundles compatible with the NBN and included
data from 10GB to 500GB. New Telstra customers who sign up to a bundle with NBN before December 25 will receive a $20 credit on their account while existing customers will receive free Foxtel services. The Telstra Stores in Shepparton stock all the popular handsets such as the new iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxys, Windows phones and the HTC models that run on the popular Android system. Mr Kelly said prepaid phones were one of the hottest items during the festive season with handset brands such as Nokia, HTC, Android, Telstra and Apple available. Prices start at $79 for a touchscreen phone and $49 for a standard phone, which were great for people who just wanted the basics. Telstra Stores have three locations in Shepparton; the new store in the Target arcade, Shepparton Marketplace and Shepparton Telstra Business Centre which recently relocated to 114 –116 Wyndham St.
Shepparton Telstra representatives such as Mario Varapodio can assist you with your NBN and home bundle inquiries this Christmas.

If you are looking for a gift to entertain the family throughout the holiday season, John Deere ’s Tractor-opoly board game will provide hours of fun. The huge range on offer will be on display for the John Deere toy extravaganza sale on Saturday, December 6 from 8 am to 2 pm in the showroom at 219 Numurkah Rd, Shepparton. Haeusler ’s Shepparton spokeswoman Jenna Burden said the toy extravaganza was a success last year, and customers gave good feedback on the John Deere range. “We had a lot of feedback regarding the high quality
craftsmanship, and that the toys do last, ” Ms Burden said. She said the toys started from $5.95 and the popular XUV Gator 12V had been reduced from $1200 to $999.95. Group spare parts manager Jo Dooley said there would be a free sausage sizzle at Shepparton Haeusler ’s John Deere toy extravaganza, and Santa was expected to arrive at 11 am. Goodies make great gifts at Christmas Family and friends are the beneficiaries of Angie Seca’s generosity and love of baking every Christmas.

Angie Seca has been baking shortbread as gifts for family and friends for more than 40 years. Angie is pictured with her daughter Lynn Ahmet.
The month of December is devoted to shortbread production in Mrs Seca ’s kitchen; each year she whips up 800 pieces of the traditional, rich, yuletide treat. She has been baking the goodies for more than 40 years and knows the recipe by heart, which is just as well as her recipe book is well worn and held together with a rubber band. “I used to give gifts but as the extended family grew I decided to do my own baking to give instead, ” Mrs Seca said. Now her nieces and nephews eagerly await their shortbread bundles, usually presented on a Christmas plate with cellophane and festive ribbon wrapping. On Christmas morning Mrs Seca ’s four children — Lynn Ahmet and Dianna Spencer of Shepparton, J Joanna Seca from Queensland and Don Seca from Melbourne — and her Àve grandchildren gather at her home to open presents. Afterwards the family either stays at Mrs Seca ’s or moves to Lynn ’s or Dianna ’s home for a traditional hot Christmas lunch, staying on into the evening when they enjoy the leftovers for dinner. “Usually it ’s just immediate family but sometimes there may be a member of the extended family who is on their own, so they are welcome too, ” Mrs Seca said. “Christmas is all about family, I wouldn ’t have anyone be on their own. ” As December is dedicated to baking, Mrs Seca ensures all her Christmas shopping is done early in the year. “I start in January, ” she said.

At the top end of the range is the Family Q, retailing for $699 and ideal for cooking for a crowd. In addition to the Weber range, Jason said Barbeques Galore was the exclusive stockist of the Ziegler and Brown series, ensuring Shepparton shoppers have a wide variety of portable barbecues to choose from. The store also stocks a complete range of larger barbecues up to full outdoor kitchens, barbecue covers and every imaginable accessory. With more than 50 outdoor settings on display, a selection of shade umbrellas, cushions and tableware available, Barbeques Galore can help deck out your Christmas celebration area in style. Call in and see Jason — who has more than 20 years ’ experience selling barbecues — and Michelle and their friendly staff for your Christmas gift ideas.
