WHAT'S ON - Autumn/Winter 2015
Welcome! It’s Autumn in EchucaMoama, which means it’s time to put away the singlets and the thongs, rug up and (literally) chill out with some premier events.

Even though spring is a good half a year away there are tonnes of events around the district to keep you feeling warm and fuzzy through the grey months. The inaugural Flavours of Echuca-Moama festival will be held in the middle of May — come enjoy a glass of wine and some beautiful local food and chase the chilly blues away. Later in the month don’t miss the Echuca-Moama Weddings Expo and let the happy couples remind you why marriage is still such an important event. Machinery nerds will have lots to celebrate throughout the season as three events in April, June and September give them their fix. The Lockington Vintage Tractor and Stationary Engine Rally, the Steam Rally Echuca and the
American Iron and Australian Road Transport History Display will show off a variety of the biggest and best machines from yesteryear. The Winter Blues Festival returns in June with a new format for up-and-coming performers. If you get along you can expect to see more cuttingedge young guns on stage than ever. Newcomers Scientwists prove science can still be magical with the opening of its new permanent exhibition at the Port, which promises to dazzle young and old alike. And the usual markets will also be open, alongside centenary Anzac Day services and Echuca-Moama Theatre Company’s annual production. So don’t despair as the days get shorter and colder; there’s still lots of fun to fill them with.

visitor information
Welcome to Echuca-Moama – The Murray’s Living Legend. Autumn/winter is the perfect time to enjoy the wonderful heritage and history of the Echuca-Moama region. The new Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a great starting point to explore the history and heritage of this wonderful region. The Discovery Centre is a “must see” as it transports you back to the 1860s and explores the events and individuals which provided the foundation for what is EchucaMoama today. Of course the visit to the Discovery Centre, steam display, the sawmill and historic wharf would not be complete without a trip on one of our magnificent paddlesteamers. A historic town walking tour or a port after dark tour will give you the story behind some of our past legends as well as some of the dark secrets of the past. One of the new family products opening in autumn is the Scientwists – Science at Play Centre, a hands-on must see science experience in the Port Precinct.
Wonderful day trips on the Backroads Trail, the Gold and Iron Bark Trail or parts of the Long Paddock Touring Route will connect you with many off the smaller towns and communities in our region. Check out the Kingfisher Cruises (Barham) or the Kyabram Fauna Park for a special, nature-based experience. And don’t forget the region’s newest event – Flavours of Echuca Moama to be held at Morrisons Winery on May 16 and 17. Contact the Echuca-Moama Visitor Information Centre on 1800 804 446 or go to www.echucamoama.com for more details.

Weddings Expo Brides and grooms to be can come and plan for the future and learn about the past at the EchucaMoama Weddings Expo on May 24. Alongside the usual stalls featuring photographers, celebrants, reception centres, cake decorators, event planners, makeup artists and entertainment will be a selection of historical wedding dresses to give brides some ideas. ‘‘We’ll be showcasing wedding dresses from past years, and it’s something we’ve never had before,’’ Wedding Expo president Tracy Luscombe said. The expo will be as full as ever with a predicted 80 exhibitors — many new — crowding into the

Keeping the focus on local businesses means couples will never be short of expert recommendations and may be able to plan their whole wedding in one day. ‘‘There will be a variety of local suppliers, and the great thing is everyone works together and knows each other. It makes it very easy for couples,’’ Ms Luscombe said. They won’t just be competing for sales this year; for the first time the expo will have a prize for the best presented stall. Steam Rally
Take the scenic route to the past as this year’s Echuca Steam Rally promises an education on machinery dating nearly to Federation.
‘‘We’ll have first-time exhibitors making an appearance, and we’ll have a couple of new attractions for kids,’’ coordinator Julie Lomas said.
Marvel as nearly century-old farm machinery, portable steam and steam traction engines and wagons parade across Rotary Park on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.
With 2015 being the centenary of the Anzacs, this year’s steam rally will have a marginally military bent.
Vintage and classic cars and motorcycles will also be on display for the more pedestrian gearhead, and with more than 700 exhibits there will be something for everyone.
‘‘We’ll be fundraising for Legacy this year, and we’ll have an extra special exhibition from the Australian Military Museum,’’ Ms Lomas said. The Museum of HMAS Cerberus will bring up a 90-plus year old relic — a 1920s era steam truck. ‘‘We’re hoping they’ll drive it

repeating a mistake from previous years.
Ms Lomas said old favourites such as the country ovens and market stalls will return, as well as the burning of the dunny.
‘‘One year they pulled the cart by hand instead of by horse and that was the closest the dunny came to burning down,’’ she said.
‘‘Alongside all the scones and damper and stews we’ll have the burning of the dunny again,’’ she said.
The Echuca Steam Rally will be held June 6 and 7 at Rotary Park on Campaspe Esplanade, Echuca with gates open 9am to 4.30pm both days.
The historic re-enactment pits firefighters armed with replica equipment and a horse-drawn fire engine against a burning wooden dunny.

Flavours of Echuca-Moama Residents and visitors will get a crash course in all the region has to offer with the first Flavours of Echuca-Moama Festival this May at Morrison’s Winery. Take in the autumn air, some delicious food and some fantastic home-grown wines on Sunday, May 17 in what event organiser Trent Eacott says is a much-needed parade of local talent.
18
Food and wine will be available on the paddlesteamer to whet appetites. On arrival, learn more than where to buy your next mixed dozen bottles as local chefs and musicians turn it on. ‘‘There’ll be activities to keep the kids busy as adults graze on tasting platters and sample wine by the glass,’’ Mr Eacott said.
‘‘There’s no real focus on food and wine on the Echuca-Moama calendar, and we saw an opening to show that off,” Trent said.
For something different, Aboriginal students will teach camp oven cooking and demonstrate how to prepare bush food.
‘‘We want to introduce some new producers and reacquaint people with some old ones they might not have seen in a while,’’ he said.
The night before, get in the mood with a luxurious dinner at three of Echuca-Moama’s premier restaurants.
Festival goers will be able to travel to Morrison’s in style aboard the PS Pevensey, which will be shuttling people down the river from the Port of Echuca.
At 7pm Junction, The American Hotel and Ceres will host dinners composed entirely of local produce served with wine. ‘‘It’s a local degustation, I’m not sure

what exactly the chefs are cooking up but there may be as many as five courses at some locations,’’ Mr Eacott said. Junction will be hosting a craft beer tasting at 3pm on Saturday, May 16. Tickets are available from stickytickets.com.au or from St Anne’s winery cellar door,
Morrison’s Winery, Merool on the Murray or Shady River Holiday Park. Tickets include a wine glass and festival program and are $15 for early birds or $20 at the gate. PS Pevensey tickets are $10 for one way.

Also on offer is a new event, the stockman challenge which will test riders’ horse skills as they guide their mounts through an obstacle course.
Organised by the Barmah Forest Cattleman’s Association, good times, beautiful sights and a bundle of cash are all on the table over the weekend at the Barmah muster yards.
The Victorian Axemen Association will hold a competition at the muster with a special red-gum chop which will test even their might.
Come for a five-hour scenic trail ride through Red Gum Forest with barbecue lunch included on the Saturday. Or relax by the fire on Friday and Saturday nights with a mixture of up and coming and established artists playing across the two nights, including Tamworth Academy of Country Music graduate Laura Byrnes.

The Barmah Muster will ride again in 2015, promising three days of good old fashioned fun between April 24 and 26.
With a number of novice and open events this year, cattleman’s association president Brad Caldwell said there’s ample opportunity for participants to win costs back. ‘‘We’ve got a team penning competition — that’s a team of three on horseback trying to cut out and pen a certain colour of cattle, a twohanded snafflebit cutting event and a $1000 winner-takes-all top cutout,’’ he said.

‘‘If I had to give one reason to come, it’s the atmosphere. There’ll be a couple thousand people at Redgum Forest and it’ll be great,’’ Mr Caldwell said. Also on Saturday night will be an Anzac Day service and a goods and services auction raising money for local charities. Tickets are $50 for adults, $100 for families and $10 for 17 and under on Friday, and $40 for adults, $80 for families, and $10 for 17 and under on Saturday. $20 for adults and $10 for 17 and under for just Saturday’s concert. LOCKINGTON VINTAGE TRACTOR & STATIONARY ENGINE RALLY The Lockington Vintage Tractor and Stationary Engine Rally is going Pommie this year, promising all things British at the annual display of vintage machinery. In its 18th year, attendees can look forward to a plethora of British, international and local vintage tractors, stationary engines, trucks, cars, motorcycles and farm equipment. ‘‘We’ll hopefully see lots of World War I vehicles and motorcycles and some great memorabilia,’’ rally
spokesman Fenton Phillips said. A grand parade of vehicles will be held both days, showcasing every moving machine at the rally. ‘‘It’s getting to be a big event, last year the parade had more than 100 classic cars alone, and more than 200 vehicles in total,’’ Mr Phillips said.
The rally will start at 11am on Saturday, April 25 to avoid clashing with Lockington’s Anzac service and 9am on Sunday, April 26 and will be held in the park opposite the Lockington Living and Heritage Centre.
‘‘Our first few rallies we had about five engines, two cars and a couple of trucks.’’

There is no doubt cutting hair is in their blood. Three generations of Echuca barbers reflected on several decades in business and the trends which had come full circle. Gordon ‘Doey’ Elliott, 87, opened a barber store in 1958 in Moama and later shifted to Echuca in the 1960s. Before he became a barber, Mr Elliott served in the navy for 13 years and cut the hair of fellow crew members on the Quiberon ship while he was a teenager. ‘‘They called him Curly Elliott. He cut hair on the ships for extra money.’’ In 1978, Maree was awarded the ‘Best Barber in Victoria’ by Sir Henry Winneke Governor General of Victoria.

“Better to be a has been than never been” she joked. Her son Rick Wilcock, who trained in New Zealand, closely resembles his grandfather and has followed in his footsteps. Antique barber chairs remain in the Echuca shop, which have been carefully restored by Ms Wilcock, who is in her 39th year of barbering. ‘‘I’ve seen things come full circle,’’ Ms Wilcock said. ‘‘Men’s barbering has come back into fashion and we have brought it back to Echuca-Moama.’’ Gordon first brought lady barbers to town and now Maree is bringing the men barbers back into fashion.

The company is hoping to open at the end of March.
‘‘Kathy started it because she knew there was no time to fit the fun, hands-on part of science into teaching it,’’ Scientwists business development manager Laura Snow said. ‘‘Science is part of our everyday life and it involves a lot of creativity, we wanted to bring that out.’’ The pair are busy putting the finishing touches on a new, permanent home for Scientwists right near the Port of Echuca. The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria ,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish & chips.
Fish in a Flash uses only premium Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

Festival to banish the winter blues 4-26 JULY 2UCA ECH
For the 16th year, and for three days, blues and roots musicians from across the country will make Echuca-Moama that little bit more soulful. The Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival is on again in 2015, and between July 24 and 26 more than 40 performers will play to crowds of nearly 20,000. Winter Blues Festival committee chairman Peter Williams said one of the reasons his festival was so popular was because it put the town first. ‘‘It’s all free for the audience — any event we put on in the street we pay for, and anything going on inside a venue they pay for,’’ he said. ‘‘This way, all the money stays in Echuca-Moama.’’ Mr Williams said the festival won’t just be cheap, audiences are bound to see something new this year. ‘‘We turn over around 40 per cent of the performers each year, so we guarantee you’ll see at least a few fresh artists,’’ he said.
That’s a significant number considering it’s the state’s largest blues festival and one of the largest in the country. In 2015 the talent will be focused on High St, with many performances taking place on the main drag in Echuca. The Winter Blues Festival also gives audience members the chance to say, five years from now, that they saw an artist when they were breaking out. ‘‘We get a lot of young people who are just beginning with few opportunities to play before to try out at the festival,’’ Mr Williams said. This used to be done at a single stage but newcomers will get a choice of venues. Mr Williams hopes the festival can put on blues singing and blues dancing workshops. The Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival runs from July 24 to 26 and takes place at venues across EchucaMoama.

Just down the road
Your journey doesn’t have to end at the town limits. You’ll find plenty to see and do in Echuca-Moama’s surrounding towns.

 36mins from Echuca
 44mins from Echuca
Cohuna
Mathoura
Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life
Leitchville is in the heart of wetlands, home to vast numbers of waterfowl and native animals and site of palaeontological finds of global importance. Kow Swamp, a few kilometres away, is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. A picnic area is on the east side of the lake is complete with swimming area, toilets and barbecue facilities. More barbecue facilities are available at the north end of the swamp, an area commonly used for fishing.
Cohuna is a peaceful town with the main street overlooking Gunbower Creek, a branch of the Murray River. Cohuna is the Gateway to Gunbower Island's many attractions, including fishing, boating, canoeing, birdwatching, four-wheel driving and walking tracks. The red gum forests and surrounds are home to 180 varieties of birds. The Gateway Information Centre in the middle of town is an ideal spot to gather further information.
Mathoura offers visitors the chance to see forest and waterways, as well as the chance to discover the district’s fascinating natural and cultural heritage. Check out the bird observatory, Picnic Point recreation area and the pioneer cemetery. Gunbower
29mins from Echuca Gunbower is a gateway to possibly Australia’s largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds.
