Bringing History to Life Deniliquin is NOW Home to one of the biggest historic vehicle and memorabilia collections in the region. The Depot allows you to immerse yourself in to the past, amongst the family-friendly and interactive displays. The unique collection of vehicles and memorabilia tell stories of life at home and on the road, with touches of Hollywood, Australian motoring, trucking, transport, emergency vehicles of the past and vehicles from all around the world dating back to 1908.

of the display, including the 1948 Bedford bus famously known as ‘Rosie’.

Toys, furniture and white goods are among the displays.

The collection of fuel bowsers adds some intrigue, and there is a retail shop where you can buy memorabilia and giftware.

The displays build on the historic vehicles and memorabilia collected by Neville and Debbie Purtill and the Purtill family over many years. The Purtill family has been involved in the transport industry since the 1950s, when Keith and Pat Purtill started a bus service. Tribute is paid to the pioneers of the business which has continued under the guidance of their sons and grandchildren with a number of their retired buses part

Other crowd favourites include the DeLorean, a replica of the one used in the Back to the Future movies, and the pink 1959 Cadillac sedan de ville which is the inspiration for the second storey function room.

Join the Fast Lane Club to take advantage of exclusive benefits for regular visitors, including unlimited admission for 12 months, invitations to signature events, discounts in the retail store and more. The membership is $48

The items on display will be ever evolving, so with every visit there will be a new part of history to be explored and enjoyed. The Depot is located in Hardinge Street, Deniliquin, and is open 10am to 4pm weekdays and 10am to 3pm on weekends. Thrills and spills under the stars

DeNi easter RODEO Some of the best cowboys and cowgirls in Australia will have you on the edge of your seat when they take to the Deniliquin Rodeo Arena on Easter Saturday. The annual Deniliquin Twilight Rodeo event is an official round of the Australian Pro Rodeo Association circuit, and will offer a 12 event program which includes some of the best take on bucking bulls and broncs. Gates open at 3pm with live music from The Smoking Gun, and will continue until late under lights. The feature event will be $1300 Lionel Sweeney Memorial Saddle Bronc Ride, named for renowned ‘pick

up’ rider Lionel Sweeney from nearby Jerilderie. A crowd pleaser is the bull rides, known as the most dangerous sport in the world and described as “like riding a big dipper, a dodgem car in traffic and a speeding merrygo-round all at once”. On a sightly smaller scale is the Pub Steer Ride, in which young local riders represent local hotels in an eight second quest to come out on top. Other popular events on the Deniliquin Rodeo program

is the bareback bronc ride, break-away roping, rope and tie and the junior and senior barrel racing events. No expense has been spared by the committee in obtaining the best possible bucking stock through the legendary Gary McPhee.

Bring your own chairs, picnic rugs and sun protection. Full catering and a licensed bar will be provided by local clubs. The event is strictly no BYO.

A sideshow alley will provide extra entertainment, which this year includes a mechanical bull.

Admission is $30 for adults, $15 for an aged pensioner, $10 for children aged 5 to 17 and $60 for a family (two adults and two children). Children under five get in free with a paying adult.

Make sure to arrive early to take up a prime spot on the elevated viewing mounds.

A courtesy bus will be available, and will pick up and drop off at local hotels.

Music Performances this Autumn

Rotary Easter Art Exhibition The historic Multi Arts Centre in Deniliquin’s central business district will become a vibrant art gallery for five days of Easter.

Hundreds of paintings, drawings, sculptures and other artworks will be on display as part of the 28th annual Rotary Easter Art Show. Regional and interstate artists are invited to enter art works in 10 competition sections, each boasting a $600 prize. There’s also a best local artist prize category, with three prizes totalling $1000. Sections include portraits and people; abstracts, symbolic imagery any medium; waterscapes, seas, rivers, lakes and more; landscapes, including country and city; still life, structured and unstructured; fauna, both fur and feather; miniature and small paintings; sculpture, 3D works any medium; colour photography and black and white photography. After the three major acquisitive prizes, all remaining artworks can be purchased by the viewing public. Judging this year will be long-time Rotary Easter Art Show entrant Carol Stewart. Deniliquin artist and paramedic Bob Johnson will be the guest artist, showcasing his bonsai skills for the crowds. Mr Johnson has been honing his bonsai art for the last 32 years, and intends to share his skills with interactive demonstrations during the art show.

A new live music experience is offered in the district each month throughout autumn. The South West Music live music program runs throughout most of the year, with autumn’s concerts offering a chance to enjoy jazz, blues and folk music, as well as children’s entertainment, in some of the region’s most beautiful locations. The popular annual Swing on the Grass concert on Saturday, March 14 will this year feature The Date Brothers with Jake Barden. Guests can enjoy the world renowned jazz grooves set amongst the beautiful Deniliquin Golf Club’s course, which is surrounded by the Murray Valley Regional Park forest. The Date Brothers live shows are always thoroughly entertaining, due to the infectious good humour and winning presence of the band members. They draw inspiration from varied musical stylings, including the lowdown bluesy sounds of New Orleans, South American street parties and Gypsy campfire songs. April’s live music performance coincides with Easter and Deni Fest, with free children’s entertainment in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens kicking off the extra long weekend. The Kazoos will present the Professor Silly show, developed specifically for primary school aged children, from 1pm on Thursday, April 9. Following the performance, children will have the chance to learn from the performers in a special musical workshop. In May there are two chances to see Small Town Folk featuring The Maes. The multi-award-winning contemporary folk outfit from Melbourne will perform in Blighty on Friday, May 1 and in Wanganella on Saturday, May 2. The Maes are sisters Maggie and Elsie Rigby who grew up in the folk festival scene. Looking ahead to winter, South West Music is pleased to be hosting classical cellist and violinist Charlotte Ryssenbeek and pianist Matthew Garvie for an afternoon performance on July 3. For more information about the live music series, or to book tickets for any of the autumn of winter performances, phone South West Music on (03) 5881 4736 or visit swmusic.org.au.

The five day event begins with the gala opening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday, April 9. Entry $15 adults. Exhibition hours are: Good Friday, April 10 – 12 noon to 4pm. Easter Saturday, April 11 – 10am to 5pm. Easter Sunday, April 12 – 10am to 5pm. Easter Monday, April 13 – 10am to 12 noon. The Rotary Easter Art Show is a joint initiative of Deniliquin Rotary Club and Edward River Art Society, and a portion of entry prices and sale commissions go back in to community service projects. Admission $5, children under 16 are free.

Easter Fair in Mathoura

Autumn is a great month for walking at The Rock – one of the best times to visit. Yerong walking track offers a moderately challenging hike up the slopes of The Rock to a spectacular lookout over bush and surrounding farmland. Leaving directly from the carpark near the information point, this pleasant and accessible walk takes visitors to the top of the dramatic The Rock formation. It begins gently, crossing small gravelled slopes between graceful red gums. As you climb higher, the path begins to wind around recessed cliffs hiding cool woolly ragwort plants – a threatened species native to the area that blooms with yellow flowers. Wallabies scatter through the undergrowth, lizards bask in the warm sun, and you may see glossy black cockatoos or wedge-tailed eagles circling overhead. Birdwatching only gets better the further you climb. This hike becomes steep towards the end, so make sure you bring some sturdy shoes and plenty of water. The payoff is notable, though, with a spectacular scenic vista across bush and rolling farmland from the top of The Rock, providing an excellent opportunity for photography. Just a short trip from Wagga Wagga, this is one of the best lookouts in the region. Galore Hills is often visible to the west, and on clear winter days the snow-capped peak of Mount Kosciuszko rises in the distance. The nearby The Rock picnic area offers a great place to stretch your legs afterwards, too. The Towers is a 100m stretch of the north-east face of The Rock, open to rock sports and also popular with photographers and birdwatchers who want to view peregrine falcons. The Towers are closed for rock sports from July – December due to peregrine falcon nesting season. This makes Autumn the ideal time to visit. The Towers, right near The Rock picnic area, offer a thrilling conquest for rock climbers, abseilers, orienteering groups and photographers alike. Located in The Rock Nature Reserve, the north-east cliff face of The Rock, is a challenge to anybody with experience and the necessary equipment. Peregrine falcons use The Towers as a nesting sight, offering birdwatchers close-up views of these magnificent creatures. Keep an eye out for peregrines on the cliff and observe their telltale whitewash streaks below their perches. To reach The Towers, follow a 670m narrow walking trail opposite the picnic shelter and look for the register book. The best time to climb is between January and the end of June. Photographers will love the remarkable view over the surrounding countryside. For directions, safety and practical information, see visitor info at www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do.

There will be a big line-up of entertainment for locals and visitors in Mathoura during the Easter period. Start your Easter Saturday with the traditional Mathoura Easter Fair in the Soldiers’ Memorial Gardens from 9am. The gardens will be packed full of fun activities for children and the whole family, including a petting zoo, Miss and Master Easter Fair competitions and the egg and spoon races. Market stalls will also be scattered through the gardens and typically offer fresh produce, pickles and jams, cakes, face painting, crafts, gifts and back by popular demand The Mathoura Tug-O-War. Not to mention the new additions of the petting zoo, sumo wrestling and chair-o-plane ride. There will be a barbecue and other great food stalls to tempt the tastebuds, and there may even be a special appearance from the Easter Bunny. The fun will be from 9am to 1pm on Easter Saturday, April 11. .

CRUISE

The Murray River is ever-changing, and each season ‘the narrows’ near Barmah takes on a completely new look. ‘The narrows’ have been 25,000 years in the making, and Kingfisher Cruises owner/operator Benita Cox enjoys sharing her ‘office’ with those who have never experienced it before. “It’s a place of peacefulness and remoteness where I get to see others relax from everyday troubles and witness families making memories,” she said. “The river is a place where I continue to learn and see new things every day. I get to see history being made. “It’s a place where I can connect with the environment by experiencing its past, present and future all at the one time because it’s simply just magic.” You too can experience the world-acclaimed Barmah wetlands as those who chartered the waters before river regulation did, with Kingfisher Cruises. Hear fascinating commentary from your certified eco guide about the hundreds of species of water birds, animals and native fish that have made the Barmah Wetlands and forest their home, and about the myths and legends of this special area. Greens Gunyah

Museum

Forming part of a new wing of the popular Greens Gunyah Museum, the recently opened Tim Fischer Gallery is a welcome addition to Lockhart’s visitor experience. The Gallery provides a unique insight into the fascinating life and times of one of regional Australia’s greatest political characters, locally born Tim Fischer AC. Tim has retained a strong connection with the town and community, and in early 2019 generously donated many items from his personal collection to the museum. His period gramophone is just the tip of the display, with the exhibition containing information and images of his long political career, his love of trains, his complete collection of mobile phones and of course his trademark Akubra hat. The Tim Fischer room is complemented by a static display of the museum’s machinery and vehicles including the fully restored first and only tractor ever owned by the former Deputy Prime Minister, a fully restored 1922 Garfield fire truck and a Huber tractor. While at Greens Gunyah Museum, there is so much more to experience. A glimpse into the past tells of times of the traditional Wiradjuri owners, the great sheep stations of pastoral kings and thriving settlements during the Federation years. Another highlight of the Museum is the acclaimed Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery, showcasing phenomenal artwork and one of the Riverina’s most historical and important resources. The incredible portraits and landscapes, which at first glance appear to be high quality sepia drawings, are actually created using layer upon layer of washed, combed and undyed natural coloured wool. Having hung in Parliament and toured NSW and Victoria over a number of years, the collection of 22 pictures is now on permanent display in Lockhart. Greens Gunyah Museum is open seven days a week and is also home to the Lockhart Visitor Information Centre, with a wide selection of local and regional brochures and maps available. Pick up a copy of the Lockhart Sculpture and Heritage Trail brochure and discover historic sites and the fabulous farm art sculptures, crafted and created from rusted metals. Many are award winning pieces for the popular Spirit of the Land Festival, held on the second weekend in October each year. For more information go to www.visitlockhartshire.com.au

Altina’s Zoo-fari YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS AMAZING ZOO-FARI IS ONLY A COUPLE OF HOURS AWAY.

See a rhino on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, or a meerkat dancing in the backdrop of the Riverina’s bushland. Altina Wildlife Park provides its visitors with a unique experience under the guidance of passionate zookeepers. The park is set on a 207-hectare bush property on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River at Darlington Point. Altina Wildlife Park houses a diverse range of animals and has been operating horse-drawn cart tours since 2004, including personalised animal talks with your own tour guide. Altina’s guides take all visitors around the park to meet the animals during their daily feed times to see these magnificent animals closer than you ever thought possible. The guided tour around the park goes for 2.5 hours and is the only way to see Altina’s animals, spots fill up fast so be sure to book for your experience of a lifetime. The idea for the park originally sprung to mind when owners Gloria and her late husband Gino were ‘courting’. Gloria worked on a fruit farm with her family and used well trained horses and carts to pull them from tree to tree, collecting the fruit. Gino started to join her in this work and they soon began to see other practical uses for horse and cart. The final spark of inspiration came after a jeep safari in Africa. “We decided it was an exciting and different way to tour this zoo; it was comfortable and relaxing. It’s a nice way to get around and the elderly seem to like it that way too, not having to move around exhibitions with walkers and wheelies.” Get up close and enjoy a personal experience that will involve nature and majestic animals from all over the world and learn about the environment, conservation, fauna and flora from the enthusiastic zoo keepers and guides. There are behind the scenes tours and ‘wild encounters’ with radical rhinos, predator experiences, meerkat mayhem and monkey madness. Zoo-fari cart tours are $38 for adults, $18 for children (2 to 16 years), and free for children under two. Altina Wildlife Park is located on the Sturt Highway near Darlington Point, about a 40 minutes drive from Griffith or two hour drive from Deniliquin. Entry and tours by appointment only. For more information go to www.altinawildlife.com or phone 0412 060 342.

DENILIQUIN GOLF CLUB Deniliquin is one of the most picturesque of the famous golf courses that stretch along the mighty Murray River and tributaries. You are invited to enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature.

What’s On Autumn 2020 31

With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses. It is also in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. By modern standards the course is not long – 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered. Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition. A feature of the Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you are not a golfer, call in and enjoy the club’s facilities. Friday nights are a speciality, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you feel welcome. For more information contact the club on (03) 5881 1325, or go to www.denigolfclub.com.au.
