Autumn is my favourite time of year. Changing colours, falling leaves and lovely mild temperatures. And what place to experience all that but in Echuca-Moama. As well as being the ideal spot to soak up the charm and character of this historic region, there are also countless events and activities planned over the three months. Starting with a day at the races. Echuca Racing Club’s Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup has something for everyone – punters, fashionistas and families. Five days later, the Rich River Rod Run will feature three days of hi-octane fun and entertainment for car enthusiasts. Those who are after some culture will be treated to a range of exhibitions, concerts, markets and performances by Echuca-Moama Artists, Echuca Historical Society, The Foundry Artspace, Murray River Strings, Victorian Welsh Male Choir,

Njernda Aboriginal Corporation and Echuca-Moama Theatre Company from March to June. And let’s not forget about Easter. Families will be kept entertained with everything from an Easter egg hunt, market and Easter fair, to a duck race and fireworks spectacular. Weddings are big business in the twin towns and this year’s Tie the Knot Festival in May is sure to attract a lot of couples looking to get married in the area. May is also a big month for Crossenvale Community House, which will hold a drag show and family inclusion festival as part of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Something not to be missed. While you’re exploring this picturesque and historic part of Australia, don’t forget to visit our smaller surrounding towns and enjoy their country hospitality. –Ivy Jensen What’s On editor

AND for the first time it is offering $100,000 in prize money. This year’s cup will be held on Sunday, March 8, and is shaping up as a big success for the club and a great event for the public to attend. Echuca Racing Club manager Garry Armstrong said the club was looking forward to providing racegoers with an action-filled weekend of top-class thoroughbred racing, live 10 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
music and great country atmosphere. The highly anticipated Echuca Cup will be run at about 4pm and is part of $350,000 in total prize money. With thousands of punters expected to flock to the racecourse, Garry said the event was becoming more popular each year and looked forward to another successful day. A family-oriented event, the Cup will include children’s activities, marquees, umbrella packages and a shuttle bus service. Shuttle buses will operate to the course picking up from various locations around town. The buses will start at 10.30am and will begin

Safe boating on NSW waterways When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets are the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. An approved lifejacket must be carried for each person on board most vessels. It must be the correct size for the wearer, in good condition and worn in a range of situations. For example:
WE A R A LIFEJACK ET
• Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel less than 8m that is underway • On vessels less than 4.8m, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone • On canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket at most times, including at night or when boating alone. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways. If using inflatable lifejackets, these must be serviced at least every 12 months or at longer intervals in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. For more information visit roads-maritime.transport.nsw.gov.au.
For more information contact Transport for NSW 13 12 36
roads-maritime.transport.nsw.gov.au
Alcohol and drug offences Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows: • 0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years • Less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators over 18 years • Less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.
Safety on houseboats When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel. If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize. Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.
When towing or wake surfing You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals. Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact. For more rules relating to towing activities, visit the Transport for NSW website.

IT’S ALL TO BE FOUND AT THE FOUNDRY ARTS SPACE The Foundry Arts Space is bubbling over with a calendar packed full of exciting exhibitions and events for autumn 2020. IT all starts with a dance theme with its High Kicks and Hard Shoes exhibition from March 16–22. It brings the rousing and captivating dance moves of Irish dancers trained by the legendary Geraldine Ryan. For 37 years, Geraldine has been travelling throughout regional Victoria on public transport to teach young and old the art of Irish dancing and The Foundry is thrilled to present this commemorative exhibition in Geraldine’s 90th year. As we hang up the dance shoes, The Foundry welcomes the Two Birds exhibition from March 27 to April 13. The mother and daughter collaboration of local artist Tarli Bird and her mum showcase 16 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
their individual style. The following month, The Foundry will open the inspiring exhibition We Are Vivid, a collective of artworks from more than 30 artists in the Vivid arts program for people in the region with intellectual and physical disabilities. The exhibition will run from April 17 to May 10. Rounding out the first half of the year in June is a combined exhibition of two local artists – Kaylene Creighton and Pete Conroy. The individual artists have very different styles and will showcase their works under one roof from May 15 to June 21. Information and updates on each exhibition will be available through the website at emai.org.au, Facebook, Instagram and the Riverine Herald.

COLONIAL WELSH CHOIR
AS GOOD AS THE REAL DEAL Music lovers will be treated to a concert by the Victorian Welsh Choir in Echuca on March 22. HOSTED by Echuca-Moama Uniting Church, the choir sings in the distinctive sparkling four-part harmony of the traditional Welsh male choir, and are renowned for the quality of their singing, and the relaxed, informal style, and good humour of their concerts. Their diverse repertoire includes Welsh, Celtic and popular songs, opera choruses, Broadway melodies and Afro-American spirituals. The choir has toured the UK five times, regularly receiving standing ovations — and is also a regular tour throughout regional Victoria and interstate. Musical director Faleiry Koczkar is an awardwinning conductor who has been honoured by Wales and her adopted homeland, Australia. She guarantees you will leave the concert with ‘a smile on your face and a glow in your heart’. Her formal musical training took place at Nottingham University and in 2012 was honoured by the National Eisteddfod of Wales by being appointed its President of Wales and the World for that year.
18
WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
This recognition of her contribution to the propagation and maintenance, in Australia, of the Welsh musical heritage was reinforced in 2014 when she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for her services to choral music in Australia. The choir has been entertaining audiences for more than four decades, presenting about 25 concerts a year in Tasmania, NSW, the ACT, Western Australia and South Australia. Internationally, the choir has visited the UK on five occasions and has the distinction of being the only ‘foreign’ choir since the early 1900s to successfully compete (twice) against the finest Welsh choirs at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, where it won third prize in 2004. In 2012, the choir toured Wales and England and helped represent Australasia in a 520-voices pre-Olympics London Welsh Choir of the World concert at the Royal Festival Hall with Bryn Terfel. The choir will perform at the Paramount on March 22. Tickets are available at the theatre.
Mid March – May 31
GWEN IS THERE TO GUIDE YOUR WAY A guided heritage walking tour shedding new light on Echuca-Moama’s earliest days is the perfect activity for the pleasant autumn weather. THE walks open in mid-March and close for the winter on May 31, 2020. Echuca Historical Society tour guide Gwen Potter can offer you a wealth of facts and insights about how and why the twin towns were founded. Moama was established as a river crossing nearly a decade before Echuca came into existence. The market for food and goods generated by the Victorian goldrushes could not be met using slow bullock drays — enter the paddlesteamers. Gwen takes visitors to stand on the spot at key sites and learn about the driving forces behind town settlement and the renowned 1800s riverboat era. Visitors follow in the footsteps of Echuca founder Henry Hopwood, an ex-convict turned ruthless business tycoon, to his punt and bridge locations and other sites unique in Australian history. Gwen’s vivid commentary will cover stories of power and ambition, wool, timber and cattle dealing, illicit drinkers and their escape tunnel, scarlet ladies, colonial law-breakers, devastating floods and lots more during the hour-long tour. Historical society president Dot Hammond said the walk “explained clearly where, why and how
Echuca was established”. “Not only is it a perfect introduction for visitors, it also really opens the eyes of locals,” Dot said. “People get to hear about the background of the earliest characters in town and stories about the heritage buildings we still have — these are certainly not obvious just by walking around. “We often hear locals say they have never known what they were looking at until they did the tour. “If you’re hosting friends or family, our walk is an ideal activity. “It’s really popular too with both local clubs and groups such as Probus from outside our region.” The tour begins and ends at Echuca Historical Museum, corner Dickson and Warren streets, opposite Hopwood Gardens near the port. The cost is $15 per person, $30 for a family. The group price for at least 10 people reduces to only $12. Gwen is also able to board visiting coaches and deliver a commentary that takes in the important Moama historical precinct as well as sites in Echuca. Walks require a minimum of six adult walkers to proceed and you can choose your own date and time. Tours need to be arranged with Gwen on 0456 223 184 by 4.30 pm the day before. IT’S ART – AND THEN THERE’S MORE ART It’s all happening at Alton Gallery this autumn. ECHUCA-MOAMA Artists have been busy creating their works of art which they will showcase at two exhibitions. The first one is called Tree. Trees have been revered in ancient and modern cultures as symbols of birth, death and renewal; of balance and harmony and enlightenment. What image is evoked for the 21st-century artist by tree? This exhibition explores the concepts. 20 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
It is showing in Alton Gallery until March 27 so don’t miss out. The second exhibition is titled In My Backyard. The Easter exhibition is an eclectic collection of the life and times of backyards, from inner city to the outback — and beyond. It is on display from April 8 to June 27. Gallery hours are Fridays from 10 am to 2.30 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm, or by appointment. Entry is free. Phone 0439 460 690.

PUTTING PADDLE POWER TO THE TEST About 150 paddlers will tackle the tightly winding Gunbower Creek on March 28 as part of the Black Swan Creek Marathon. THE second annual event is a 46 km paddling race starting at Creekside Park in Gunbower and finishing at Cohuna’s Apex Park. The race promises to be a lot of fun and to win, you will need to have a lot of turning skills and strategy in very narrow conditions. The creek has very little flow, but there are several obstacles; a short ‘white water’ fish weir, three bridges, depending on the creek height, will see you go under or over it and a main weir that requires a portage. There is a main channel, however the creek is full of tree stumps and low-hanging branches to make it all the more interesting. The race, organised by Sydney Harbour Kayaks, will start mid-morning and presentations will be held in Cohuna in the early evening. Stage one will involve the 12 km route from Gunbower to Thompson’s Bridge Weir, stage two is the 11 km to Hipwell Weir, including O’Reilly’s Bridge, stage three involves 8 km to 22 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
Wee Wee Rup and stage four is the remaining 15 km, including Dalton’s Bridge, to Cohuna. The race is open to individual paddlers or relay teams, including kayakers, canoeists, stand-up paddle boarders and outriggers.

Don’t be an egghead,
BE A LOCAL TOURIST INSTEAD
As a working mother of two children, school holidays either excite or scare me. TRYING to balance work with family is a tough gig on any normal week, so throw Easter school holidays into the mix and life can become a full-blown three-ring circus as you try and juggle it all. If you’re lucky enough to score the entire two weeks off, good for you and I’ll try not to imagine you soaking up the sun at some beachside resort with kids activities galore. But if you’re like me — who managed to get a few days off here and there — take the opportunity to explore your own back yard. Thousands of visitors come from far and wide to see what we have to offer so why don't you be a tourist in your own town? Your kids will love it. Now we are lucky enough to have some fantastic attractions across Echuca-Moama and you just have to search kids’ activities to find we have paddlesteamers, a discovery centre, water park, trampoline complex, science centre, mini golf, indoor pool, animal ranch, cinemas and more. All of which are great fun, but if you want to spend quality time with your little ones and not a fortune, there are so many cheap or free options to choose from. Echuca-Moama is so family friendly, it makes for the perfect day out whether you have babies, toddlers, bigger children and even teens. I always start with a trip to Echuca library because who doesn’t love reading a good book or playing a bit of scrabble while overlooking Echuca’s stunning Aquatic Reserve? Plus, it has a great collection of DVDs and magazines, as well as free Wi-Fi. Just up the road on Murray Esplanade is the Foundry Arts Space, which hosts a variety of interesting exhibitions throughout the year. A perfect way to get in a bit of culture for the day and it’s all free. 32 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
From there, stroll along the scenic walkway to the historic Port of Echuca where you will be transported back to yesteryear. Obviously, a trip on a paddlesteamer is something you should do once in your life, but if you have a big family and don’t want to spend all your money in the one place, the MV Mary Ann is free to board. All you need to do is buy an item from the allday cruising cafe menu. Once you hop off, Riverboat Dock is a great place to explore and check out the old paddlesteamers and luxury houseboats lined up along the riverbank. Bring your walking shoes and make your way to Scenic Drive or walk up to Hopwood Gardens’ new play space. Designed in line with the surrounding historical precinct and thanks to the ideas of local children, it features natural elements, a paddlesteamer, animal features and traditional play equipment including a mini water feature. With ample seating, you could grab a coffee or snack from one the countless cafes or bakeries around town while you sit and watch the kids play. Another great playground is the Moama Echuca Adventure Playpark off Perricoota Rd in Moama which has a specially designed family swing — perfect if you want to swing with your baby. The playpark sits alongside the picturesque botanic gardens which features a timber bridge and a bronze sculpture of ballet dancer Helen Choules. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic lunch, with barbecues, tables and undercover seating available. While you’re on that side of the river, Moama
Skate Park is a free venue where your youngsters can skate, scoot or cycle to their hearts’ content. Speaking of cycling, Moama also boasts Five Mile Mountain Bike Track which is worth checking out. Echuca-Moama is a haven for bushwalkers and cyclists so make the most of all our walking and bike trails. If the weather is warm enough, head down to Moama Beach for a swim or just enjoy watching the boats go by.
And if you’re in need of some retail therapy you don’t need to spend a fortune. As well as range of excellent op shops, we have the Echuca-Moama Market at Moama’s Soundshell, Echuca Farmers’ Market at Alton Reserve. And if that’s not enough, don’t forget about our smaller surrounding towns — Gunbower, Torrumbarry, Tongala and Rochester — which are worth visiting for their visually stunning murals and country hospitality. FISHING EXHIBITION HAS CROWDS
hook, line and sinker Echuca Historical Society’s exhibition ‘Fishing on the Murray’ has been so successful during its run, it has decided to extend the dates.
THIS show not only tracks the major uses of the river, it includes everything to do with its fishing history, right down to some of the earliest of fishing tackle. And, of course, those photos of the really big ‘big ones’ showing massive Murray Cod bigger than the men who caught them — in some cases even bigger than the little skiffs from which they fished. Anyone interested in getting hooked on this rich river history is encouraged to get on in before it closes at the end of March. You can see it all at EHS in its museum at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, daily between 10 am and 2 pm. Groups are welcome, email eh.soc@bigpond.com or phone 5480 1325 to arrange a suitable time for your visit. While you are there you can also check out 34 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
the many documents and memorabilia held by the museum, including river charts, records of floods and paddlesteamers that plied the Murray alongside the people fishing, swimming and boating. EHS’s Chinese Community exhibition opens on April 1 at the museum. This exhibition tells the story of some of our earliest residents, the Chinese, and why they made Echuca home. Chinese market gardeners arrived in Echuca in April 1865 and by 1892, there were 17 different Chinese paying rates on land. Others had experience as bankers, storekeepers and interpreters, general labourers and even a river boat owner/captain. There were many marriages between white women and Chinese men on the goldfields and then in towns to where the miners moved when the gold failed. You can also find out about the burning tower. The exhibition is open daily from 11 am until 3 pm. Groups welcome. For information, phone 5480 1325 or visit echucahistoricalsociety.org.au

IF YOU WANT ACTION THE TWIN TOWNS HAVE GOT PLENTY If you’re looking for your sporting fix this Easter weekend, then you won’t need to look any further than Echuca-Moama. AND there are several options to meet everyone’s taste. The action will be headlined by the Murray Football Netball League clash between Echuca United and Moama at Echuca South Recreation Reserve on Good Friday, April 10. While the traditional Three Jacks trophy will be on offer there will be a much bigger storyline at play. On the netball courts, Echuca United will unveil their premiership flag against their archrivals, who they defeated in last year’s grand final. The two sides produced several thrilling contests throughout last season, and you shouldn’t expect for this one to be any different. On the football field, we’re expecting to see yet another exciting contest. United are once again tipped to be among the

The event will form part of the Australian Professional Rodeo Association circuit with championship points on offer to competitors. Tickets are available online or at the gate. On Sunday, April 12 Echuca Harness Racing Club will complete their hat-trick of major events with the Echuca Easter Pacing Cup. A KOORI ARTS AND CRAFTS EXTRAVAGANZA Experience a taste of Aboriginal culture with a great day out for the family at the Koori Arts and Craft Market. NJERNDA Aboriginal Corporation will hold its ninth annual market in Echuca on April 11. Health promotion worker Keith Hearn said this year’s plan was to focus on a more interactive approach in introducing its culture to the broader community. “The introduction into arts and crafts will be a focus this year and community will have the opportunity to sit down with local indigenous 40 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2020
people and create their own pieces using traditional elements such as reeds, gum nuts and emu feathers,” he said. “We will also have the cultural display marquee showcasing local history, artefacts and elders telling stories. “Throughout the day we will run several traditional games for the community to take part in which adds a further element of the rich
cultural history we want to promote and share. “Among all this we will also offer traditional dance, live music performances from local artists headed by Maddi Colville, up to 20 stalls offering locally made art, artefacts and jewellery, traditional face painting, traditional food such as kangaroo stew with damper, emu Caesar salad and wattle seed panna cotta.” The market will be held at Hopwood Gardens and will showcase local artists with items for sale including paintings, lino prints, silk scarves, didgeridoos, jewellery and bags, boomerangs as well as traditional foods such as emu, kangaroo, crocodile and damper.
Mr Hearn said the event aimed to celebrate and promote local indigenous arts and culture. “It provides an opportunity for local aboriginal artists to showcase their skills in traditional arts, craft, music and dance, sell their work and create income,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity for indigenous and non-indigenous people to come together to bridge the gap and promote reconciliation. “It offers all Australians a unique opportunity to experience our indigenous culture to gain a better understanding, increase knowledge and gain respect.”

t h g i n r u o y t h lig The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre will come to life with its annual Easter Spectacular on Easter Sunday. EXHIBITS and operations manager Mesh Thomson said Easter celebrations at the port were set to impress with an exceptional line-up of activities and entertainment for the whole family. “The Easter Spectacular is a great opportunity for families to experience Echuca’s unique history, home to the largest fleet of paddlesteamers in Australia that are brought to life through the remarkable sail past,” Mrs Thomson said. Celebrations will kick off in Murray Esplanade on April 12, with free access to the Echuca Wharf available from 4 pm. Festivities are expected to include a barbecue, bar, children’s play area and live music until the iconic sailpast and fireworks display at nightfall. “The spectacular fireworks display marks the end of the festivities and is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, with incredible views from on top of the heritage listed Echuca Wharf,” Mrs Thomson said. The Easter Bunny will also be hopping around the precinct handing out chocolate Easter eggs to visitors. The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is funding the community event with local business support and while not compulsory, a gold coin donation would be appreciated to help cover costs. HELPING OUR KIDS KICKSTART THEIR CAREERS More than 400 students will have the opportunity to gain insights into their future at the Echuca-Moama Beacon Careers Expo. THE expo will be held on May 5 at Rich River Golf Club 9.45 am to 12.15 pm. The day will begin for students with a welcome and guest speakers before workshops start at 10.15 am.
Year 10 students from St Joseph’s College, Year 9’s from Echuca College and Moama Anglican Grammar, Year 9 and 10s from River City Christian College and Year 10–12’s from Echuca Specialist School will be able to choose four 20-minute workshops in their interest areas from a diverse range of 60 careers. Echuca-Moama Beacon Foundation co‑ordinator Cheryl Sweeney said she was looking forward to working with business and community members to provide local young people with the information to guide them in their future career pathways. “We aim to keep it local and we have had a great response and commitment from our local businesses and organisations,” she said. “Through a thorough evaluation process, we received very positive feedback from the students on the value of the workshops in becoming more informed of their career pathway. “We also had terrific feedback from our >> WHAT’S ON Autumn 2020 57
>> presenters on the organisation of the day, the venue and catering. Some students have been offered work experience opportunities from employers through contact on this day and others have been offered apprenticeships.” Some comments from the students last year include: The most enjoyable part of the expo was having the guest speakers talk about what they do for a job and how they got to where they are now. — Probably getting to talk to all the different people who are actively working in the career choices that we want and are thinking about. — Getting an insight of what that career is like and what it takes to get there. — I really enjoyed the beauty and spa workshop because that's the career path I am heading towards and I found it really helpful. — I enjoyed the event management as it held a lot of information and described what the job includes and all the needed information. — I enjoyed talking to the people in my workshops about what they do, to try and get a clearer idea of my future career. — Learning things about career paths. — Learning how to apply for the job and getting questions answered.

— Listening to them talk about the experience in that particular work field — I really enjoyed the day overall, I found it very helpful. I didn't think I would like it but I did and so did all my friends.

BUSINESS
The Murray Business Network’s (MBN) autumn event will be held on May 6. WITH the aim to facilitate and encourage networking to support and promote growth in the Campaspe and Murray shires, MBN has held a number of well-attended events with interesting and engaging guest speakers. And May’s event is no different, featuring Narelle Fraser. Narelle was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years, 15 of those as a detective with the Homicide, Rape, Sex Crimes, Missing Persons

and Child Exploitation squads, specialising in sex offences and child abuse. Involved in many highprofile investigations, Narelle was diagnosed with PTSD in 2012 and was never able to return to policing. However, she overcame many adversities
DISCOVER YESTERYEAR TODAY to become an ‘accidental’ mental health advocate and keynote speaker on the challenges of first responders who face trauma and grief on a daily basis. Narelle shares the signs of stress she ignored, hoping they would magically disappear. Instead of disappearing, they increased to the point she couldn’t continue in the career she loved. The stigma of mental illness is alive and well in our community and Narelle’s hope is to help normalise, rather than stigmatise, mental illness. Narelle has lectured in Investigative Techniques and Human Rights and NMIT, Criminology and Specialist Interviewer Program at Monash, is a policing and mental health commentator on television, radio, in print and social media and is a regular guest on Australian True Crime podcast series with Meshel Laurie and Emily Webb. The MBN dinner will be held at Rich River Golf Club from 5.45pm. Cost is $95 for non-members and free for members.

Frock On Frock On WITH CROSSENVALE COMMUNITY HOUSE
Crossenvale Community House will host two events in May to raise awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues while celebrating diversity. ON May 16, a dinner and three-hour drag show will be held at Moama Bowling Club, followed by its International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia Family Inclusion Festival on May 17 at Echuca’s Hopwood Gardens. Crossenvale co-ordinator Sheridan Clark said the inaugural Frock It Out events were not just about raising awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues and lack of services in our rural community; but providing a platform for the community to come together, celebrate diversity and welcome all residents to enjoy a fun-filled event on a significant day.
Echuca’s first drag cabaret show encourages you to dress up and bring out the glitter, heels and frocks for a fun filled night with your friends. Entertainment is provided by Melbourne's premier drag queen Art Simone, known internationally for her extravagant costumes, spectacular performance and fabulous persona. This includes the Piano Man, who has 15 years’ professional experience in venues and cruise ships across the world. “The entertainment is very interactive as the piano player takes requests from guests throughout the evening, singing all your favourite classics and crowd pleasers,” Ms Clark said. >> WHAT’S ON Autumn 2020 65

>> A Reconciliation Walk will be held on May 27, departing from Njernda Medical, 84 Hare St, at 10 am. The walk begins with a smoking ceremony, followed by a walk down Hare St where the crowd will gather at Echuca Aquatic Reserve for speeches, flag raising and presentations. The walk is part of Reconciliation Week which is bookended by the 1967 referendum where non-indigenous Australians overwhelmingly voted to include indigenous Australians in the Census and remove them from the ‘Flora and Fauna’ category and The Mabo Case where the land rights of the Meriam people were recognised. This provided a catalyst for wider recognition and understanding of the traditional landowners and the implementation of native title. Uncle Rick Ronan said the theme for this year’s event was In This Together. ‘‘It is a week of sharing our culture and knowledge to the non-indigenous people of this land,” he said. The walk aims to promote acceptance and understanding of all cultures, no matter the

Baroona Youth Healing Centre manager Keith Hearn said he hoped to get a good crowd this year. ‘‘Lots of schools came down to the event last year and we we’re so proud to share this with them,” he said. ‘‘We’re proud of what we’re trying to create here in Echuca and we’re going to build it in the years to come.’’

THE 57th annual Steam Rally Echuca-Moama from June 6–7 will showcase more than 300 exhibits of working yesteryear and steam engines valued at more than $500,000 each. Steam Rally secretary Julie Lomas said while preserving the historical nature of the event by showcasing steam engines, vintage cars and working horses, the committee added other initiatives that would attract a younger audience. “The introduction of the children’s precinct was extremely popular last year so it will continue, along with similar attractions,” she said. “We will again involve the primary schools with the colouring competition and also do visits to some with steam engines.” Ms Lomas said this year, trades from yesteryear would include blacksmiths, blade shearing and hay bailing. >> “Plus the introduction of three new WHAT’S ON Autumn 2020 73

Whip-cracking
TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
The history of Australia’s early farming days has become the inspiration behind a new live show at Echuca’s Billabong Ranch Adventure Park —Where the Long Paddock Meets The Murray. The show is a one-hour trip down memory lane featuring Australian humour, working horses, livestock, old farming equipment and working dogs. It is filled with whip-cracking action, Australian flags, some great Australian music and a good dose of local history. It finishes with a cup of billy tea and freshly made damper. Business owners Kerri and Richard Acquisto said the show was designed and choreographed to showcase the local history of the area, including the famous ‘Long Paddock’. ‘‘We were looking to fill a gap in the tourist market and push people up the droving trail and out into other country towns like Deniliquin and Hay,’’ Mrs Acquisto said. The idea of establishing a live show had been
simmering in the minds of the couple for quite a while. ‘‘Richard had the idea to create a live show about the same time as the Outback Spectacular started so we decided to put it on hold for a while, but it is something that has always been sitting in the back of our minds,’’ Mrs Acquisto said. She said whip-cracking, fire-turning and other elements of the show were things they already offered visitors to the park, but they had now combined them in one show. The show is currently running every Thursday at 1pm. Extra shows during school holiday periods. Go to lpmliveshow.com.au for session times. Tickets are $38 for adults, $25 children and $120 for a family (up to three children) and are available at: lpmliveshow.com.au WHAT’S ON Autumn 2020

CFA SUPERLATIVE
By Ivy Jensen ECHUCA CFA crews are arriving at all emergency fire call-outs within their target timeframe. The latest emergency response time data shows Echuca brigade responded to "hazard class two" incidents within eight minutes 100 per cent of the time between July 1 and September 30, 2019. It took 7.45 minutes for crews from any brigade area to reach 90 per cent of emergency incidents, according to the CFA figures. It's an improvement from the same time the previous year, where the brigade responded to 90 per cent of call-outs within its 10-minute target. Echuca Fire Brigade captain Rob Amos said of the 48 call-outs it received between last
year's quarter, 34 were in the Echuca area and 11 of those required an emergency response. “That can be anything from a house or structure fire or alarm at a factory,” he said. “To reach those 100 per cent of the time is fantastic. We don't always meet it so we're very pleased. “Anywhere between 90-100 per cent we believe we're serving the community to standard and this is something we work hard to do.” The other 14 call-outs were to offer support to surrounding brigades such as Tongala and Bamawm Extension. The volunteer-only organisation is also hitting its targets more than some Metropolitan Fire Brigades, which met 91.3 per cent of their response time benchmarks (of 87.5 per cent) with more staff at the station.
‘‘The traffic and distances in places like Bendigo and Melbourne are very different to Echuca though,” Mr Amos said. However, the Echuca brigade still faced challenges of its own. “It can be quite challenging due to the location of the station and getting across the traffic lights to get to a job,” he said. “The time of day is also a factor. It's easier to get across town to the station at two in the morning as opposed to five in the afternoon.” Mr Amos also said there had been no injuries during the period, which was his ultimate goal. ‘‘The worst we've had was a dehydrated firefighter earlier this year,’’ he said. “Firefighter safety is one of my highest priorities so that's very pleasing.” Although response times from October 1 to

December 31, 2019, have not been released, Mr Amos said the brigade had received 98 call-outs - almost double from the previous quarter. “We would hope to have met our targets between 90-100 per cent of the time,” he said. “We monitor them regularly so if we're not meeting them for a reason, we don't wait six months down the track. We will address it immediately.” CFA chief officer Steve Warrington said the data highlighted the hard work of members, as well as the continued danger fire posed to the community. “While a lot of focus is rightly placed on bushfire safety at this time of year, this reminds us that residential fires can be just as deadly and devastating to our community,” he said. “We encourage everyone to install smoke alarms and check the batteries regularly.”

The Riverine Herald cameras have been around town checking it out and started with our own staff having a quick lunchtime dip (top) before people more sensibly attired turned up at Moama Beach for a dip.
That included Montana and Brandon Farrell (above centre), Ethan Stuart with his dog Zara (above right) and Grace Atkinson (left).
