CONTENTS 7 THINGS TO SEE & DO Events and attractions to interest everyone.

WELCOME THE COVID-19 pandemic has turned our world upside-down. Restrictions have caused businesses to close, events to be cancelled and people to isolate at home. The way we do things has been forever changed and we have learnt to be flexible when it comes to work, enjoying family time and getting your daily exercise. Because whether you are working from home, keeping the children entertained and staying active, there are still a multitude of options available to you in the Echuca-Moama region. Now, more than ever, is the perfect opportunity to explore your own backyard. Starting with our walking and cycling tracks. With spring in the air and generally flat topography, the twin towns are ideal for all ages to get around by bike. And there are countless cycling and walking tracks to get your heart racing. There are also many beautiful parks around Echuca-Moama

where you can get your healthy dose of nature. Once day trips are allowed, take advantage of the country hospitality of our surrounding towns and visit the spectacular murals and silos in Tongala, Rochester, Colbinabbin and Gunbower. Many restaurants, clubs, pubs and cafes are still offering takeaway and delivery and are looking forward to re-opening when restrictions ease. Also check out Visit River Country website which is your one-stop place to find which artisan stores are home delivering, where the best riverside walking trails are hidden, and which attractions are still open. Don’t let the pandemic get your down. Think of it as an opportunity for a “staycation” and see what your own community has to offer. – Ivy Jensen What’s On editor

STEAKHOUSE A sizzling success

While Overseas Travel May Be Off The Cards For A While, You Don’t Have To Wait To Get Your Taste Of Texas. Instead of jumping on a plane to the US, step into 1895 The Royal’s Texan Steakhouse, right here in Echuca. Upstairs from the pub and complete with a brand-new bar and total refurbishment, the steakhouse is a unique dining experience with an interactive hot rock presented to each customer who orders a steak. The do-it-yourself aspect adds a whole new dimension to a night out, and for the customer who wants their meal just so, they get to do it themselves. Your steak will arrive seasoned and sealed, ready for you to cook to your liking on the hot rock. The steakhouse is a great match for the pub which has two consecutive beer and beef competition titles under its belt.

“We’re pretty happy with the quality of our meat, so we thought opening a steakhouse would be a perfect fit for us,” co-owner Brandon Harpley said. On top of a range of the highest standard of steaks, there’s mouthwatering entrees from southern fried wings to loaded fries to the authentic southern favourite: Texas toast. The whole experience is designed to be more intimate creating a cozy feel, and offering a completely different menu to the pub, and of course keeping in line with the Texan Steakhouse theme. The Steakhouse is open from Thursday to Saturday each week from 5 pm til late for dine-in only. Bookings are essential with tables up to 10 people, to book call 5480 7626.

Yay! Spring is here, at last! SPRING is in the air. Well, almost. Tomorrow is the first day of spring. But you could have fooled sisters Elle and Zara Swadesir, who were enjoying the sunshine in the blooming canola fields at Mathoura last week. Photographer Zowie Crump has been taking advantage of the nice weather, and canola fields, lately and hopes it is a portent what’s to come. The first day of spring for Echuca-Moama is set to be mostly sunny, with the mercury expected to reach 18C. Wednesday will be even warmer, with a top of 21C expected.

CITY BUYERS FLOOD MARKET By Ivy Jensen DEMAND for Echuca-Moama properties is so hot, people aren't waiting for private inspections, they're buying them straight off the internet. In case they miss out. This unprecedented demand is driven by buyers in the lockdown zone of Melbourne looking at the safety of the twin towns as soon as they can escape stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions. Local real estate agents say this is breaking new ground in the local market and they are struggling to keep up. Elders Residential, Charles L King First National, Century 21 Rich River Real Estate and Ray White Echuca

The buyer signed up and purchased the property without actually viewing the property.

— Troy O’Brien, Charles L King First National

have all sold or had offers put on homes without buyers personally inspecting them. Something Elders’ Alistair Lias has never heard of before. “This is highly unusual but understandable in the current conditions,” he said. Mr Lias said he had received offers for two houses in Echuca and one in Barmah without the Melbourne and

Geelong buyers inspecting the properties. “Two were from photos and measuring around the house with a measuring wheel,” he said. “The other I did a WhatsApp video inspection. I also took photos of the immediate area and special features nearby like a boat ramp. None had anyone do an inspection for them.” One successful offer was $340,000

for a three-bedroom brick home in Echuca, bought as an investment, and on the market for about 70 days. A second offer was for a fourbedroom home in Echuca, priced in the mid-$500,000 mark. It had been on the market since March and was wanted to live in. The Barmah home, priced around $200,000, had been on the market for just over three months and is wanted as a holiday home.

Mr Lias said the expected demand post restrictions being lifted and the appetite for people to fast-track a treechange had prompted the sight-unseen sales. “People are very keen to make a move to a regional area that they originally planned for the future,” he said. “It’s unknown how long this may take and some people believe regional Victoria will have a price rise due to the demand of people wanting to move post restrictions. “There is also the ability for more people to work from home due to a shift in the way people are employed.” — Continued page 2

History buffs are encouraged to attend Echuca Historical Society’s exhibition Echuca in Uniform 75 years ago —  The Untold Stories. The exhibition, at the museum at 1 Dickson St, will take you from enlistment to the end of each soldiers’ journey. It will give you an opportunity to follow the same path the soldiers travelled, to countries so different from places where they lived. It highlights the soldiers involved in heavy conflict, and others, who while not on the front line, were every bit as important. It will be an insight into each soldier’s personal journey of WWII. The day Japan accepted allied demands for unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945, one of the soldiers in the exhibition was present at the signing to end the war with the Japanese. For some, it was an adventure and for others, they believed it was their duty to defend their country.

The exhibition tells the stories of people who lived in Echuca and surrounding areas who then changed into uniform and went on to fight in the war years, serving their region and country in so many ways. It is supported by the Victorian Government and Victorian Veterans Council. Information and educational notes along with photo displays, maps, uniforms and other objects complement the exhibition. The exhibition closes in December. For information, email eh.soc@bigpond.com or echucahistoricalsociety.org.au Had enough of this year and all its problems? Echuca Historical Society has just released its 2021 calendar. At only $10, it is available at the museum, Port of Echuca Discovery Centre gift shop and Collins Books, High St, Echuca.

DISCOVER YOUR LOCAL Murray River Council is encouraging locals to consider the natural and cultural attractions they can visit right across the footprint. Despite travel being limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, there’s so much to discover in your own backyard and the exceptional hospitality across the region is ready to show off delicious local food and wine. “Our amazing natural assets, wide open spaces and accessibility to nature are a major drawcard to visitors, even outside of a pandemic, so I’d encourage our residents to think about making the most of what’s right on our doorstep,” mayor Cr Chris Bilkey said. “As we wait for the world to open up again, now is the perfect time to rediscover local offerings like our cultural and produce trails, and even the spacious riverside parks at many of our towns.” No matter where you live in the area, you don’t have to travel far to find something you’ll enjoy. Nestled along the mighty Murray River, Moama features a wide range of cycling and walking trails offering a perfect way to explore the idyllic bushland and get some fresh air. Drop in to Five Mile Reserve for a picnic or mountain bike riding, or take a stroll back in time through Old Moama to see the Old Telegraph Station and picturesque River Captain’s Cottage. In Barham, keep your eye out for one of 15 exceptionally carved red gum statues depicting the pioneer men and women of the district and iconic wildlife. Cr Bilkey said a day trip down the road will introduce residents to attractions they weren’t even aware of.

“Those interested in the historical value of the area in particular will be amazed at some of the interesting stories or artefacts they’ll uncover just taking a stroll through one of the towns an hour up the road,” he said. You needn’t look any further than the rich history of Moulamein, the oldest town in the Riverina, which also features exceptional fishing on the Edward, Wakool and Niemur rivers and Billabong Creek. Relax in beautifully maintained parks along the river in Tooleybuc or drop a line in off the side of your boat with a community boat ramp right near town. Explore a network of forest tracks or take a scenic drive in Wakool and put your feet up after a long day at the Wakool Hotel, a renowned go-to for travellers. In Mathoura, discover one of the largest red gum forests in the world, which covers an expansive 70,000 hectares and includes internationally renowned wetlands. For golf lovers, Murray Downs Golf and Country Club is widely acclaimed as one of the Murray River’s finest golf courses and also offers bowls, tennis and great dining and entertainment facilities. Each town has a special charm and with so much to see and do, there’s no better time to step out and explore beyond your front gate. TIME TO MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT WE’VE GOT

If you haven’t explored what’s in Echuca-Moama’s backyard then you’re missing out. Echuca Moama Tourism chief executive Kathryn Mackenzie believes now is the perfect opportunity for locals to make the most of what is around them. “We’re encouraging everyone to get out and see what Echuca-Moama has to offer,” she said. “Across the region there is something for everyone to get involved in. And the best part is you don’t have to look too far if you want to spend a day with the family.” But your biggest challenge might be where you should start. If you’re looking for the answer Kathryn recommends visiting the Echuca Moama Tourist Information Centre. “We’ve got a wonderful team of volunteers who are willing to help point you in the right direction,” she said. “By visiting the centre or our website you will 18

find a lot of different ideas — some you might not have known even existed. “Our information centre is the perfect starting point to help set up a wonderful day.” But according to Kathryn the best part about experiencing your own backyard is that you are continuing to support your community. “It’s more important than ever that we support each other,” she said. “Unfortunately, not as many people are visiting our towns right now and we want to make sure our businesses are open when tourists do return. “Some people might actually be surprised by what their own community has to offer. “There is a wonderful range of entertainment for all ages. “I encourage people to get out there and experience Echuca-Moama.”

GET YOUR HEALTHY DOSE OF NATURE Parks Victoria manages many beautiful parks near Echuca where visitors can get their dose of healthy nature. Growing scientific evidence and generations of traditional knowledge show that spending time in nature is good for our mind, body and soul. As the scientific evidence linking nature with positive health outcomes grows, so does the global trend for health professionals prescribing nature. In the past decade, park and social prescriptions have become recognised as a viable, low-risk way to encourage people to be more physically active and to boost their wellbeing. changes to park conditions including closures. Terrick Terrick National Park — 40 km west of Echuca. Start your day at the picnic area nestled at the base of Mt Terrick Terrick. Picnic tables, toilets and park information are provided. Behind the picnic area is an unpowered campground which offers self-sufficient visitors the opportunity to spend a quiet night under the stars and wake up to the sound of the birds. Follow the well-defined grade 3 track from the picnic area, then choose your own path up the granite rocks. Take care in wet and windy weather as the rocks may be slippery and the summit is exposed. Wear shoes or boots with a good grip. This area contains Victoria’s most significant stand of white cypress pines and is great habitat for woodland birds. A slow scenic drive through the park in spring is a good way to enjoy the woodlands, grasslands, granite outcrops and wildflowers. You could also join an experienced and licensed birdwatching guide in search of the elusive and endangered plains-wanderer. Mount Hope Nature Conservation Reserve — 65 km north-west of Echuca. A granite outcrop north of Pyramid Hill offers great hiking and walking opportunities. For anyone who makes it to the top of Mt Hope, spectacular views of the neighbouring land await. There’s a picnic area at the northern end and excellent wildflower displays in spring. Torrumbarry Weir — 35 km north-west of Echuca on the Murray Valley Hwy. Visitors will find nice spots for a picnic and impressive views of the weir and Murray River. There’s a great interpretive centre with lots of information about the area and the infrastructure. While there are no official walking tracks there are lots of short walks you can take along roads or through the bush. Gunbower National Park — 50 km north-west of Echuca. There is lots to do in nature at Gunbower. Pack a picnic and stick to the car for a half day drive through Gunbower Island’s Gunbower National Park and

Gunbower State Forest. The Gunbower Island Forest Drive is a leisurely drive through river red gum and black box forests with a number of points to stop and check out historical, cultural and ecological sites. Gunbower Island is Australia’s largest inland island, located between the Murray River and Gunbower Creek. It is also internationally recognised as a wetland of significance for its importance to birdlife, native mammals and amphibians. The island provides habitat for kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and many species of birds. To help you navigate the drive and learn the rich history of the forest, visit the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre in Cohuna for a map and explanatory notes.

A MILLION REASONS TO VISIT FAUNA PARK Kyabram Fauna Park will receive almost $2 million in state funds to help with its renovation and upgrade plans. >>

WHAT’S ON Spring 2020 23

>> The $1.94 million grant will go towards a new reptile house and visitor entry, along with upgrades to the education and conservation centre, animal exhibits, pathways and fencing. Kyabram Fauna Park general manager Lachlan Gordon said the funding was essential to pushing the attraction towards the future.

24 WHAT’S ON Spring 2020

“The park has been well supported by the local community with many individuals, community groups and businesses volunteering their time or donating goods and services,” Mr Gordon said. “However, much of the park’s infrastructure is ageing and needs upgrading to meet

current standards and visitor expectations. “This grant will help us create an even better experience for visitors with the construction of a new reptile house and new visitor entry plus upgrades to the education and conservation centre, animal exhibits, pathways and fencing.” >>

WHAT’S ON Spring 2020 25

>> The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning will work with park staff to deliver the upgrades, which will start as soon as possible. Campaspe Shire Council is also contributing $200,000 to the new reptile house and will project manage construction of the reptile house in partnership with park staff. This comes on the back of the park’s recent 26 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

announcement of a multifaceted master plan, which was designed with the goal of guiding the development of the park for the next 20 years. State Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said the new improvements would give people even more reasons to visit the park, as well as Kyabram and district itself. “This funding will help create even better visitor experiences in regional towns, which will also have positive economic and tourism benefits for the local community and wider region, he said.

The Campaspe region is full of artwork for any traveller to marvel at. Even if you missed the Rochester Mural Festival in February, there’s still plenty to see. Rochester is a dilettante’s dream with murals as far as the eye can see. After years of heartache from floods to the closure of the Murray Goulburn factory, the town came together to show they could in fact rise from the ashes. In 2018, the community unveiled its new silo art which brought new life and tourism to town. “We have been through it all — floods, bushfires, closure of MG — but we decided to do this as a community for our community,” project media manager Kate Taylor said in 2018. “This is Rochy’s doing and it wouldn’t be

possible without GrainCorp. “They have been amazing through the whole process and they are a part of something pretty special.” Ms Taylor said Rochy was now on the map. “People are coming here to see our silos, not to stop on their way to somewhere else,” she said. “And it isn’t just tourists having a look, the number of locals you see down there is great and they are all just proud to be able to say to their friends and people they meet that they live in Rochy, where the amazing silos are.” >>

>> This statement is still true, with plenty of tourists stopping to catch a glance at artist Jimmy Dvarte ‘s tribute to native wildlife. Since then, the Rochester Business Network and other local groups have added more and more murals to town. In 2019, the town immortalised Bluey, the then world’s oldest four-legged best friend. The local Australian cattle dog went down in the history books after living for an amazing 29 years and five months. His owner Les Hall took him home in 1910 where he worked with cattle and sheep for almost 20 years before being put to sleep in November 1939. RBN president Glenda Nichol said, as Echuca artist John Steven’s mural was completed, it was a great and welcome addition to the town. “We are so very excited,” she said. “Anything that is good for our town we are thrilled to be a part of.” And then came time to bring the story of Nanneella’s Ron Iddles to centre stage. Early 2020 saw Benalla artist Tim Bowtell paint the former police detective’s life just off the main street of town. Ron has been referred to as Australia’s greatest detective and after investigating more than 300 cases during his time with 34 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

the homicide squad, he retired with a staggering — and unmatched — 99 per cent conviction rate. Mr Iddles and his twin Barry were born at Rochester War Memorial Hospital in 1955. Educated at Rochester Primary School, Lockington Consolidated School and Echuca Technical School, Ron moved to Melbourne at 16 to pursue a career in the police force. The Iddles family has strong roots in Rochester. Ron’s parents lived in town until they died, and the mural also embraces the family’s story. After six months of hard work, Mrs Nichols said the final product was impressive. “Tim has been amazing to work with. I spent six months researching the Iddles family and we are still finding things out about them, but it’s been a real learning curve and it’s just amazing,” she said. “And everybody who comes to see it just can’t believe it.” And if that wasn’t enough, you could take the drive to Colbinabbin where you can see Mr Bowtell’s biggest work yet.

The town has also joined the prestigious silo art trail with six giant murals, showcasing a different time in the community’s history. The artwork took 50 days to paint over about 10 weeks, as Mr Bowtell was able to continue working despite coronavirus restrictions.

And while COVID-19 was not a problem, Mr Bowtell had to conquer the elements to get the job done. Silo project lead Sadie Vale said the designs depicting Colbinabbin’s history came from community consultation but had to blend with each other in theme. “We tried to capture all the stories, so the design was difficult — we had lots of meetings and draft designs until we came up with solutions,” she said.

MORE THAN THE NAME SUGGESTS

Housing Neil Thomas’ personal collection, which has continued to build over 44 years, the museum offers you a bright and colourful walk down memory lane. As the collection has continued to grow there has always been one continuous theme. All the items on display are Australian. “We pride ourselves on displaying a variety of different items that come from across the country and have been in circulation at different times in history,” Neil said. “When we re-open we will have even more items on display. The shutdown period has allowed me to revamp the collection. “I was able to buy some more display cases so

there is more of the collection to see. Even if you have been here before it is well worth visiting again.” When you hear the name, you might just think the collection only features beer related items. But that is far from the case. “We’ve got a car display which includes nine different models including Fords and Holdens,” Neil explained. “I’ve even managed to collect old pieces of farming equipment throughout the years. >> WHAT’S ON Spring 2020

Being a tourist

IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD REQUIRES SOME PLANNING

Visit River Country is your one-stop place to find which artisan stores are home delivering, where the best riverside walking trails are hidden, and which attractions are still open. Murray River Council tourism officer Rachel Turnbull said it was all about the ‘stay-cation’ right now. “The River Country website is a comprehensive guide to all the small towns in the Murray River Council area,” Ms Turnbull said. “We spend a lot of time updating it and providing a voice for small towns.” On the website you can search through places

40 WHAT’S ON Spring 2020

to go, things to do, and suggested drives from Mathoura to Moama, Tooleybuc to Koraleigh. Ms Turnbull said locals were turning to Visit River Country — and being surprised by what they found. “There are a lot of people in the EchucaMoama who know nothing about their own area, about Moulamein for example,” she said. Moulamein is the Riverina’s oldest town and

a popular camping spot thanks to its abundant fishing and gum trees — its biggest resident is ‘Big Tree’, the largest living red gum in Australia believed to be over 300 years old. Another handy resource is Visit River Country’s food and wine section. Filled with rundowns on all the artesian farm-gate producers and cellar doors in the area, River Country provides contact details, petfriendly advice, opening hours and online delivery information — all in one place. Examples include Barham Vines, a small family owned vineyard running an online cellar door at barhamvines.com.au and Bundarra Berkshires Free Range Pork who are selling free-range pork products at bundarraberkshiresshop.com You can grab a few bottles of premium shiraz or cabernet sauvignon grown on the banks of the Murray in Perricoota, while ordering a 10 kg box of mixed organic beef cuts from Jungle Lane Beef. Veggie lovers can also get their avocado fix from Barham Avocados which has just launched an Avo Club for those keen on eating the creamy stone fruit year-round, and Quincy Jones Jelly (qjj.com.au) has a range of jams and preserves made from natural and Australian produce. Mofro Wines, which specialises in shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, is taking online orders only. An ideal day trip is the Mathoura — Picnic Point — Moama touring route which contains various riverside and forest tracks, excellent fishing spots, a low boat ramp, bird hide and raised boardwalk. Dog walkers will also be pleased to know they can take their pooch along the 5 km long Gulpa Creek walk in the Murray Valley Regional park. Another idea is heading to Tooleybuc, a popular riverside location featuring beautiful parks and fabulous lunch stops. Tooleybuc is highly rated as a children’s playground and fisherman’s delight. It contains a nine-hole golf course, mini golf for the kids, the biggest stump in NSW, and legendary burgers courtesy of Koraleigh General Store. The third day trip idea is for the rougher sorts — Campbell’s Island State Forest welcomes dogs, motorbikes and four-wheel driving. This state forest runs along the Murray and Little Murray rivers just north of Barham. Best access is via North Barham Rd. WHAT’S ON Spring 2020

SPEAKS FOR ITSELF AT THE TIMBERCUTTER

Overlooking the junction of the Murray and Edward rivers, The Timbercutter in Mathoura is the place to be when catching up with family or friends. Lined with red gum wall panelling and featuring polished red gum floorboards, open fireplace, leather chesterfield lounges, handcrafted furniture and a 6 m long red gum bar, little extra is needed for this café, bar, restaurant and function venue. Situated on an 850-acre farm, The Timbercutter is open for lunch and dinner as well as private functions. The Timbercutter’s Kalli Crump said scattered throughout the property were vast wetland areas — home to thousands of native animals. “That’s what makes us so different to other 42 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

All-inclusive packages are available for events, with the restaurant overlooking a private ceremony site on the junction of the Murray and Edward rivers. “We have a very personalised approach and are extremely flexible,” Kalli said. “While we have suggested packages, we are happy to work people get what they want.” The restaurant holds up to 150 guests, but outside can accommodate double that. If you’re looking at holding an event there,

options include formal sit-down dining, shared platter style or a relaxed cocktail reception. The team will work with you to ensure your menu is everything you desire, while full catering and bar are included. “We felt like part of the family”, “exceptional food and service” and “absolutely perfect from beginning to end, a dream come true” are just some of the comments left by satisfied customers.

DON’T BE BORED THIS SCHOOL HOLIDAYS As a working mother of two children, school holidays either excite or scare me. Trying to balance work with family is a tough gig on any normal week, so throw school holidays into the mix and life can become a serious juggle. If you’re lucky enough to score the entire two weeks off, good for you but if you’re like me — who managed to get a few days off here and there — take the opportunity to explore your own back yard. Thousands of visitors come from far and wide to see what we have to offer so why don’t you be a tourist in your own town? Your kids will love it. Although we are lucky enough to have some fantastic attractions across Echuca-Moama, many of them are closed due to COVID-19. However, this doesn’t mean there’s 44 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

nothing to do. Echuca-Moama is so family friendly, it makes for the perfect day out whether you have babies, toddlers, bigger children and even teens. I always start with a trip to Echuca library because who doesn’t love reading a good book or playing a bit of scrabble while overlooking Echuca’s stunning Aquatic Reserve? Plus, it has a great collection of DVDs and magazines, as well as free Wi-Fi. Just up the road on Murray Esplanade is the Foundry Arts Space, which hosts a variety of interesting exhibitions throughout the year. A perfect way to get in a bit of culture for the day and it’s all free.

From there, stroll along the scenic walkway to the historic Port of Echuca where you will be transported back to yesteryear. The newly renovated Riverboat Dock is a great place to explore and check out the old paddlesteamers and luxury houseboats lined up along the riverbank. Bring your walking shoes and make your way to Scenic Drive or walk up to Hopwood Gardens’ new play space. Designed in line with the surrounding historical precinct and thanks to the ideas of local children, it features natural elements, a paddlesteamer, animal features and traditional play equipment including a mini water feature. With ample seating, you could grab a coffee or snack from one the countless cafes or bakeries around town while you sit and watch the kids play. Another great playground is the Moama Echuca Adventure Playpark off Perricoota Rd in Moama which has a specially designed family swing — perfect if you want to swing with your baby. The playpark sits alongside the picturesque botanic gardens which features a timber bridge and a bronze sculpture of ballet dancer Helen Choules.

It’s a perfect spot for a picnic lunch, with barbecues, tables and undercover seating available. While you’re on that side of the river, Moama Skate Park is a free venue where your youngsters can skate, scoot or cycle to their hearts’ content. Speaking of cycling, Moama also boasts Five Mile Mountain Bike Track which is worth checking out. Echuca-Moama is a haven for bushwalkers and cyclists so make the most of all our walking and bike trails. If the weather is warm enough, head down to Moama Beach for a swim or just enjoy watching the boats go by. And if that’s not enough, don’t forget about our smaller surrounding towns — Gunbower, Torrumbarry, Tongala and Rochester — which are worth visiting for their visually stunning murals and country hospitality. THE NEED FOR MEAD Honey is almost eternal. It has been found in the tombs of the Pharaohs, discovered in Georgian ceramics more than 5000 years old and turns up in EchucaMoama sandwiches or chicken dishes circa 2016. Honey has been used by humanity for thousands of years. Spanish cave paintings show our forebears began chasing bees for their golden nectar at least 8000 years ago. Recorded beekeeping can be traced back to Cairo in 2400BC. Although a spectacular source of nutrition it wasn’t long before honey was elevated to more venal heights — as a form of currency, a tribute or offering to the deceased or the gods. By the 11th century AD, German peasants were paying their feudal lords in honey and beeswax. But in 21st-century Womboota, the humble honey bee is today being used to create a range of the 46 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

world’s oldest alcoholic drinks — mead. At the Old School Winery, where Frits and Suzanne Massée have been producing their golden brew for about 20 years. Two decades might be barely a blip in the honey story but it does help that the meadery is now part of the century-old school and Womboota’s old school property, where the Massées and their daughters Freya and Kate live in the renovated school building. With a little bit of old fashioned do-it-yourself a deliciously rustic building rose on the site of the original school to house the meadery and tasting room, complete with cheerful pot-belly stove and nook displaying hand-made pottery. The versatile third-generation potters have their

own kiln from which to turn out their pottery. Apart from their historic indulgence with honey, the family is also slowly revealing some local lore at the same time. “We find remnants when we’re gardening,” Suzanne says. “We have found the outlines of the old tennis court and an outline of Australia in brick.” Surrounding the tasting room is a sprawling expanse of garden, the shady trees scattered with tables and chairs for visitors to escape the summer sun. “It’s a cool garden because it’s often hot here,” Suzanne explains as she leads me along the tracks. “City people like it here,” she gestures to a tranquil outdoor setting before stepping towards a chook pen. “And here are the winery chooks. People love coming to the country and seeing chooks. And the chooks welcome visitors and particularly their cars; they like picking insects off them.” The garden is a continual work in progress, as the drought-doomed

herb garden has given way to other more hardy plants to make a comeback, under the watchful eye of Freya. Beautifully bucolic — but you can drink the sight in, but not drink it. The mead you can. As one of the world’s oldest alcoholic drinks mead has a rich history. While most people associate mead with the Vikings and the Celts — and judging by their consumption it’s easy to see why this would be the case — its naissance goes back much further into the shadows of time, thousands and thousands of years to Africa, Northern Europe and even Asia. Mead is made by fermenting a honey solution with wine yeast, although pure mead has no grape or fruit juice added. The Massées buy their honey locally, usually river red gum, and yellow, black and grey box honey. They also produce banksia mead from banksia honey sourced in the Little Desert. “As a rule, red gum mead is more consistent in taste,” Frits explains. “But the honey varies with the seasons as well, giving it a different taste.” Once the mead is made it is matured in oak barrels or stainless steel vats. “Making mead is as time-consuming as >> WHAT’S ON Spring 2020 47

>> making wine,” Frits says. Mead making has been slowly growing in popularity, although there are still very few manufacturers in Australia, and most of those only doing it as a family tradition. “There are not many mead makers, but there are few home brewers,” Suzanne says. “The South Australian market is very big and in Tasmania it is a growing market.” And now the Americans have recently started to get a taste for mead. “It’s a growing business in the States, with America running big mead competitions,” Frits says. “I make it through the year, but I aim to do 48 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

the mead in spring and autumn. Making mead involves controlling the fermentation process. So if it’s more or less nice and cool, it makes it easier.” And the best part of mead making? “You’ve got to do a lot of tasting,” laughs Frits. Traditional mead is very syrupy, but the Massées produce meads ranging from dry to sweet. “The dry and medium-sweet meads we regard as a table wine so they can be drunk chilled.” They also produce two fortifieds and a Bard’s Reward sweet mead which lend themselves to being mulled (warmed) — with your personal choice of spices added. “It’s the fun one to have because people like adding their own spices, which is why we don’t put any in when we make it,” Frits says.

For many trying mead for the first time, there is a certain surprise the dominant flavour is honey and not grapes. “Because it’s made from honey, people think they can quaff it and they often say their children would love it, but we have to remind them it is alcohol,” Frits laughs. As well as their mead, Suzanne and Frits dabble in table wines, buying their grapes locally, although they do grow some Barbera vines (an ancient northern Italian grape variety) at Womboota. Their whites and reds are made the traditional way with a basket press. Suzanne says the development of the Backroads Trail in 2012 had been a great incentive for the region. “The Backroads Trail has added to the range of tourists we see here,” she says. “It’s also brought another element of traveller, those in four-wheel drives, who go further afield.

It’s been a really good addition. “To a lot of Melbourne people, who are really citified, they feel like they’re coming to the edge of the outback.” “They want to know how we survive out here,” Frits laughs. The answer is easy though — a lot of hard work and dedication. They are only closed for two and a half days a year (Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day morning), but wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s very much hands on and it’s timeconsuming, but it’s good to break it up by talking to people and we always try to get them proceed on the Backroads Trail,” Suzanne says. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, we love it,” she says. “And I certainly don’t have time to go kicking cans up the street,” Frits quips. No, not when you are as busy as the proverbial bee.

GARDEN BED CAUSING QUITE THE STIR Dozens of happy little wooden people are calling a Tongala garden bed home. Made out of wooden spoons, the community initiative has been causing quite a stir in the small town. MB Bakery and Café owner Shirley Docherty began the Spoon Town initiative after seeing a similar project in Williamstown. “I made a few spoons to get the idea going,” Ms Docherty said. 50 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

“Then I invited the local schools to be involved and it has really started to take off. “The students have been making them as part of their art classes during remote learning.” The garden bed is located outside the Mangan St bakery, in front of one of the town’s art murals. Ms Docherty said locals walked past the

garden beds regularly to see the latest additions to spoon town. “It’s really lovely to see children of all ages getting involved,” Ms Docherty said. “It’s a bit of a novelty and gives people something to look at and talk about.” From Batman, fairies, bakers to devils and a family dog, the spoon town is made up of all sorts of characters. Ms Docherty said she was looking forward to welcoming more additions to the garden bed. “Children can bring their creations into the bakery and I will number them so they can be part of a prize draw,” Ms Docherty said. “I couldn’t possibly choose the best one, so I am going to put the children’s name in a hat and draw the competition that way. “Hopefully the garden will be full by the end of September.”

Murray said they appreciated the great support from locals during the latest Stage 3 restrictions. “They’re just happy we’re open so they can come in and talk to someone out of their house,” he said. “Even though we’re all done up with a mask on, they’re pleased to see a happy face and so are Shona and I. “We’re staying open for the sanity of ourselves

and our customers.” With a wide range of pancake toppings, both sweet and savoury, as well as all their other breakfast options, there really is something for everyone. Their strawberry pancake is the most popular and it’s easy to see why — poached strawberries in strawberry syrup on two pancakes, complemented by maple syrup and a side of icecream or cream. For those with a savoury preference, there’s The Yank — featuring an American twist with bacon and eggs atop the pancakes with a side of maple syrup. With warmer weather on the way and a spacious courtyard able to seat 30–40 people, Murray is looking forward to welcoming people back in when dine-in restrictions ease. And while business has been slow due to restrictions and the NSW-Victoria border closure,

Murray has a practical approach to seeing the end of COVID-19. “We have to grind it out, it’s like a marathon; you don’t win it in the first few kilometres, you have to see out the whole 42 km,” he said. Brownz Courtyard Café is open seven days a week from 7 am to 2 pm for takeaway. When Stage 3 restrictions are eased, normal operating hours are 7 am to 3 pm.

54 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

It’s easy to lose a few hours at Chanter Estate Winery and Military Museum in Moama. If the beauty of the cellar door doesn’t get you, then surely the collection in the museum will. Owned and operated by Mary and Ian Ledwidge, the couple relocated the former Holy Trinity Church from Rochester in the late 1990s to Moama to act as their cellar door. Brick by brick the couple rebuilt the church and in 2001 they opened the cellar door and museum. The military museum is home to an extensive collection of memorabilia which includes cars, trucks, motorbikes, guns, medals and other historical objects including cameras, glasses, hats and helmets. All of the vehicles are in working order and Mary has researched each and every object over the years. “It amazes me but I am still learning new things today,” Mary said. “The bulk of the collection was purchased 30– 50 years ago, some of which travelled overseas in shipping containers to us, while other bits have been found or sourced throughout Australia. “In the early days I never used to be very proud of the collection but I am now. It is very hard to find war memorabilia these days and it really is special.” Mary said some of the vehicles have appeared in movies including My Brother Tom, Sullivans, Death of a Soldier, Mission Impossible and Rose Against the Odds. Mary knows the importance of holding together a collection such as the one they have in the twin towns. “Too often in Australia I’ve seen collections sold and when I get customers commenting it brings to home how important it is to keep and maintain it.” The couple may have scaled back their winery commitments over the years but they still

produce a good drop. Their best sellers include Verdelho — a refreshing table wine with aromas of lemon, honeysuckle and lime. The 2012 light Shiraz is a well-balanced medium bodied easy drinking wine. Chanter Estate is available for tasting, cellar door sales, Devonshire teas, cheese platters and grape eating in season. The Estate is open weekends, public and school holidays 10 am – 4.30 pm For more information contact 5480 7878 or 5480 0334 or email chanterestatewinery@bigpond.com

Tongala: ONE TOWN TO RULE THEM ALL

58 WHAT’S ON Spring 2020

Tongala might just be the number one town in regional Victoria. One supermarket. One pharmacy. One seniors footy team. One A-grade netball side. And just one pub. You get the picture, right? But Tonny is also one of those all-for-one and one-for-all places that is home to 2000 people — 99 per cent of whom would say community is what makes their little town tick. That, and the unified attitude of looking out for each other through thick and thin. Nestled in between carpets of emerald green plains home to dairy cattle, cropping and the occasional livestock enterprise — and, just beginning to make their annual appearance, golden fields of canola — this little dot on the map is fiercely proud, fiercely independent and yet retains an aura of small country charm that only history and generations of families can provide. It’s hard to find a local business that doesn’t have a local name attached — such

as McConnell Bus Operations. Owner Gary McConnell vouches for the town’s neighbourly feel — it is all he has ever known. “I was born in Tongala and have lived here ever since,” he said. “It has always been a really good community where everyone is involved, whether it is at the schools or sporting groups or otherwise. Tongala is the sort of friendly town where most people will say hello when you walk down the street.” Tongala Pharmacy’s Carol Cooke agrees: “I just think it is a lovely place to live, with lots of locals, and everyone cares about what is happening in our town and about each other,” she says. “There is certainly a lot of support amongst locals, for locals. Especially in times like now, everyone is keeping an eye out for each other.” >>>

WHAT’S ON Spring 2020 59

>>> Tonny has adopted the moniker ‘the friendly town’ for good reason. One thing is certain: you would have to clock up a lot of country miles to find a more colourful town — and this one boasts some colourful characters, too. Offering a kaleidoscope of colour, many of the town's brick buildings have been emblazoned with murals depicting Tongala new

60 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

and old — most of which is the handiwork of Tongala Street Art Group’s Murray Ross and his merry band. Described by Mr Ross as “Australiana”, the 50-plus artistic portrayals found tucked around street corners and hidden behind residences don’t paper over the past, but rather bring it to the forefront of the town’s existence. And who better to revive Tongala history than those who live there. “We use local people where we can for the murals,” Mr Ross said. “They (the murals) are all about sustainability for a town like Tongala. With the downturn of the dairy industry and the Nestlé factory’s closure, we had to come up with a survival plan.” But it’s not just the arts and culture sphere where Tongala stands out.

Not surprisingly, the town also bats well above its weight when it comes to sport. A giant-beater in its own right, Tongala has nurtured many athletes to the top and constantly performs well in footy, cricket and netball. “Tongala is a friendly and close-knit community; the town has strong and passionate sporting culture, pushing for future success. It has incredible sporting facilities for such a small town,” Tongala Cricket Club coach Daniel Coombs said. “Tongala Cricket Club has worked hard over the years to compete with the big towns in the area. “A focus on nurturing youngsters, providing the best possible facilities/ coaching and promoting a family club environment has seen the club go from strength to strength.”

IT’S THE DETAILS THAT KEEP THEM ON TOP IT’S the little things that stand out when you visit Top of the Town. The way every little detail is set to make sure your experience, and food, is as perfect as possible. It’s the only way they know how to do it — and the only way they would want it to be done. “That’s where we pride ourselves,” owner Stav said. “We want to always deliver the best food and the best service we can. We take extra care with how we do things. “The best way you can go about working with food is to put yourself in the shoes of the customers. “When we produce a meal, we ask ourselves if this is something we would be willing to take ourselves. “If we don’t think it’s perfect, we aren’t giving it to our customers. We won’t accept being anything less than the best we are capable of. “We continue to find ways to improve ourselves and make the experience as good as we can for 62 WHAT'S ON Spring 2020

our customers.” To go alongside their strong service and working through the little details, the range of products is strong and includes beautiful fresh fish which is truly top of the town. “I’m not one to reveal all my secrets,” Stav laughed. “But we are never settling for what we have. It’s the simplest of things. The way we clean, the products we have, everything is in the details about how we do it. “We have the same message to all our staff, to keep finding ways to make the experience better for everyone who comes through our doors. “We want to be the place people come to for their fish, we want them to really enjoy what we serve them and to come back to us again in the future, and we go out of our way to make sure they do by giving them the best we can offer every time.”
