78 TASTE GUIDE
Hungry? Look no further!
And 2021 might be the best year to do it. Because for the first time in a long time, events are starting to return to the region. And there’s plenty to do across the twin towns. Starting with the Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup on Sunday, March 7. The racing club is gearing up for a massive COVID-safe event building on the success of its New Year’s Eve event. And there is expected to be plenty of entertainment for the entire family. Also on March 7, the Volksclub Bendigo will roar into Echuca for its annual ice-cream run. Old and new Volkswagens will turn heads before stopping to enjoy a sweet treat. Meanwhile, music lovers are invited to enjoy the distinctive, sparkling four-part harmony of the traditional Welsh male
choir at the Echuca Paramount on Sunday, March 21. In sport, football and netball will make a comeback in April when grounds will be back in action, and players — and hopefully spectators — will be returning as well. But if history is more your thing, check out the Lockington Tractor Rally over the Anzac Day weekend for a taste of what’s to come ahead of the Steam Rally in Echuca on June 12. Organisers decided to cancel the event in January but have since decided to hold a one-day event instead. Whatever it may be — whatever the cause — there’s plenty to do across the region, and there’s never been a better time to enjoy it all. Because if COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s that events can’t be taken for granted.

‘NORMAL’ LIFE IS ON THE WAY City, country re-unite with more freedom soon
By Andrew Johnston VICTORIA is poised to take its single biggest step towards COVID normal in two weeks’ time. Changes were announced on Sunday morning, on the same day the state recorded its ninth consecutive day with no new COVID-19 cases or deaths. From 11.59pm on November 22, life will seem almost nornmal
compared to what Victorians have endured for most of 2020. Hospitality venues are the biggest winners of the final step on the state's road map with up to 100 people allowed indoors under a one person per four-square-metre rule. Outdoor areas will allow up to 200 with a two-square-metre rule. Households will also be allowed to accept more guests, with 10 visitors in each home from any household.
Gyms will be allowed 100 people in groups of 20, while indoor sports can cater to 100 people in groups of 20. Outdoor physical recreation will increase to 500 people in groups of 50, with indoor pools allowing up to 50 people. The accommodation sector will also see increases on numbers allowed, with a cap of 10 from any number of families at hotels and motels. Cinemas will also take a major step,
with up to 100 people allowed grouped in 20 with a four-square-metre density rule. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the state had earned the new changes, but needed to remain cautious for the future. “But there is a fragility to this thing. It is not gone,” he said. “If we let our guard down, it will be back. Today is a day to be optimistic. “No-one can assume that because
we want it to be over, it is over and because we have had nine days of zero, it is gone and somehow those numbers are the same as a vaccine against this deadly virus. They are not.” While these changes will likely come two weeks from now, a number of further changes came into effect this morning which has seen a oncedivided Victoria become whole again. — Continbued page 3

Windella Farm’s Sarah Mostyn at Echuca Farmers’ Market.
MARKET OFFERS freshest produce Looking for the finest produce from across the district? Then look no further than Echuca Farmers’ Market. Held on the first and third Saturday of every month at the Aquatic Reserve, behind the Echuca-Moama Visitors Centre, the market offers the chance to buy from local growers. Market manager Frank Coonerty said visitors could find a range of seasonal produce on site. “We’re accredited with the Victorian Farmers’ Markets Association,” he said. “We’re excited to offer something for everyone who wishes to visit the market. “After a difficult 2020 we are looking forward to moving forward this year. With our new location we believe we’ve got more to offer.” Mr Coonerty said there was more than just fruit and vegetables available for purchase. “The committee runs a breakfast and coffee van, so people won’t be missing out,” he said.
“Everyone is also welcome to bring their pets down for the morning as well. If the weather allows it is a perfect place to start your day with a picnic. “And the best part is, there is plenty of parking for everyone.” Mr Coonerty said it was important the market was able to get going towards the new normal. “It was a really long layoff for our stallholders (when the market was off for eight months),” he said. “Some have been lucky to be able to sell in other places and through other means, but for some this is the only way they can get their produce out there. “I really feel for them because they’ve suffered really badly due to the restrictions, and it’s going to take a long time for them to recover.” The market runs from 8 am to 12 pm. steam rally planned While the Steam Rally Echuca Moama you know and love has been cancelled for 2021, Rotary Park will still be the place to be on Queen’s Birthday weekend. Echuca Moama Rotary Club made the decision in January to cancel its usual event due to uncertainty around COVID-19 restrictions and border closures, so a oneday event on Saturday, June 12 will be held instead. “It’ll be on a much smaller scale,” Rotary president Teresa Carlson said. “There will still be some steamers but it just won’t be what it was. 12
WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
“It’s more about us being seen to be out there and what we are doing for the community. “We’re hoping it will be a no-charge entry.” Much of the details are yet to be nailed down but Ms Carlson is confident in a ‘Country Music’ theme for the event, with local talent to be featured. There will also be food vans and of course, a great community vibe. “Watch this space,” Ms Carlson said. The Steam Rally Echuca Moama is held annually on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, reaching its 56th year in 2019. It features steam engines, vintage and classic cars, old motorcycles, engines and wagons, as well as live music, gourmet food and the popular ‘burning down the dunny’. The event is subject to change due to COVID-19 restrictions.

RACING AHEAD
with cup plans
A premier day of racing and a great family event. The Echuca Cup is the biggest event on our racing calendar, but it’s far from the only one. There four other meetings before the end of the 2020–21 season, with three of them falling before winter arrives. And it’s the perfect opportunity not only to see a day of the best racing in the country, but to see why the Echuca Racing Club is rated one of the best clubs in Victoria. The Echuca Racing Club will also host meetings on April 19, May 10 and May 29 — all of which are a Monday. ERC general manager Garry Armstrong said he hoped the rest of the local season was as strong as the cup itself. “We’re really looking forward to what the rest of the season is going to have to offer,” he said. 18
WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
“We put a lot of work in over the autumn and winter period so it’s always in top notch for the racing season, and we expect it will stay that way.” Armstrong said while the events hadn’t historically been the biggest for spectator numbers, he was hoping to see that change following a year of limited live sport. “We are going to be operating on COVID safe systems, and that means we will be able to have crowds come in and enjoy a day at the races. “The quality is always strong, and when we get to this point of the year the conditions and weather really suits some of our local runners, so it’s always a good time to get out there and back a winner.” For more information, contact Echuca Racing Club on 5482 2487, follow its Facebook page or visit: countryracing.com/echuca
FOOTBALL AND NETBALL ready to return
Sport is the lifeblood of the Echuca-Moama community. Something that unites the community — even if it’s into three groups. And 2020 wasn’t right without it. Thankfully, our two biggest sports are back for 2021, with netball and football ready to return to the grounds around the Goulburn Valley, and for our three local clubs, it couldn’t come soon enough. When the 2019 season finished, Echuca United were A-grade netball premiers, Moama’s quest for an A-grade three-peat had come to an end, and Echuca’s GVL senior premiership dreams had come to an end at the hands of Kyabram. Moama’s footballers had claimed a wooden spoon, United’s footballers had suffered a straight sets elimination from the finals, while Echuca’s A-grade side fell short of a grand final berth. But that was more than 12 months ago. And quite a bit has changed in that time. The United side who won that premiership is all but gone, as is the Moama side who faced them in that decider.
Echuca United has a new coach, and has lost a number of key players, and will put a young side on the rebuild on the football field. Moama have recruited well, and with the equivalent of two pre-seasons under their belts, their young guns are expected to be one of the bolters of the Murray League’s football competition. At Victoria Park, Echuca’s netballers will have a new coach who will be hoping to return to a grand final berth. And Echuca’s senior football side has retained most of their list and have 18 months of emotion built up from their grand final loss. No-one is quite sure what football and netball will look like on the field after a year out of action, but what is clear is how badly they want to be back out there. When early April rolls around, our grounds will be back in action, and players — and hopefully spectators — will be returning as well. There is so much to play for on the line, but for most, what matters is just being back at all. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2021 19

Echuca United claimed the A-grade flag in 2019, defeating reigning premiers Moama by two goals.
RIVALS TO MEET
in cup contest
The joy of winning a netball premiership never goes away. Every time you see the medal, or a photo. Every time you pick up your dress or see the court you played on, you are reminded that you claimed a premiership. The pain of losing doesn’t easily go away either. It stings you all off-season, possibly the rest of your career. Every time you hear the opponent’s name, it eats away. Even more when it’s a local rival. These feelings — through turmoil, through team changes, through a pandemic — have festered for 18 months. Now, on Good Friday, they finally come out as Echuca United and Moama return to the court for the first time since the 2019 A-grade grand final. But it’s just one of many clashes as the two local clubs square off for the Three Jacks Cup. 22 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
Named for Echuca South’s Jack Hay, Echuca East’s Jack O’Neill and Moama’s Jack Eddy, the event is the perfect way to start the Murray League season. Moama president Matt Lake said his club couldn’t wait. “It’s been such a long time since we have had sport,” he said. “Just to get out there will be special, but playing against another local club on a day which means so much to both clubs, that’s a great opportunity and we are really excited for it.” United president Ian Johnson agreed. “It’s a day which is very important within our club community, but especially after losing a season,” he said. “We’re looking forward to having a really good crowd down to watch and to be part of a great sporting event.”
DINNER TO RAISE
vital funds Katie Devlin with one of her drawings she created as part of her healing.
Rape survivor Katie Devlin is encouraging people to attend a fundraiser for the foundation that helped her through her darkest days. The Echuca teacher’s experience with the Full Stop Foundation, which provided the young woman with free trauma counselling during her recovery, was the motivation for the fundraiser. To turn a horrendous act into something constructive. And take back a kind of control. “Having used the Full Stop Foundation’s services, I know how incredibly important it is to have counselling with trauma-trained people,” Katie said. “I feel a really strong need to turn this into something positive and to give back to the foundation that has helped me so much. “Part of my healing is to raise awareness and hopefully encourage other survivors to get counselling. By raising money for this charity in our community I can inspire others to seek help.” Katie and a few of her friends have organised a fundraising dinner and auction at Moama Bowling Club on March 20. “The club has given us the room for free and provided us with $500 worth of vouchers. We hope the ticket sales will cover the cost of the entertainment and food,” she said. 24 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
“We will have a two-course dinner, live band for entertainment and an auction which is where we hope to raise the most money. “One phone call costs $110, while $200 can help fund a trauma counselling session for a woman in a remote or regional area, so I’d love to raise at least $5000. But it really depends on how generous the community is. “The money I raise will allow survivors get the help they need.” Katie said the money would go towards the foundation that supports and resources the work of Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia; a not-for-profit organisation that provides the community with free 24/7 telephone, online and face-to-face trauma specialist counselling to people of all gender identities who have experienced violence, and their supporters. The event runs from 7 pm to midnight. Tickets cost $67 and are available at eventbrite.com.au (Full Stop Foundation Auction Night). For information or to donate items to the auction, email krdevlin1@hotmail.com or follow the Facebook page.

HOPING TO HIT
a high note
After taking a hit and cancelling the beloved Winter Blues Festival last year, organisers are hoping to give the town something new in 2021. While they may not be trying to come back “bigger and better” this time around, festival organiser Peter Williams said it’s about helping the town get back on its feet. “We’re working now to bring something to our weekend in July this year, but it may not be what everyone knows and loves,” he said. “Our team is working with venues and musicians to see what we can do to help each other and hopefully get the event off the ground again.” As COVID-19 ripped through the events calendar in 2020, for a while organisers hoped the four-day blues fest would go ahead. But after announcing their first round of artists who were ready and raring to hit the stage after a dry year, Winter Blues froze and plans crumbled in May last year. “We as an event would have lost upwards of $25,000 after we had to cancel last year and that’s after dipping into our rainy day money,” Mr Williams said. “And that’s not including the losses venues and accommodation suffered either. “We know we can’t be doing that every year and if we were to miss it again this year, we’re not sure what we can do from there.”
Despite this, Mr Williams said this was all the more reason to work hard to get the festival back up and running again. “We know how hard a year it was and we know we can’t ask too much of our venues, but we want to keep these conversations going so we can work out a way to bring Winter Blues back in one way, shape or form,” he said. “We’re also hoping to work with the government to see how we can be supported that way too, but it’s all back in the planning stages for now.” The event, which is tentatively set for the weekend of July 22 to 25, could see your favourite local artists back in Echuca-Moama. “We have had conversations with our artists here and there and although it will probably be a downsized event, we may pick our line-up back off the shelf for this time around,” Mr Williams said. The committee meets in the second week of every month and hopes to keep the community updated on the event’s plans moving forward. For more information or to keep updated, you can visit the Winter Blues website at winterblues.com.au This event is subject to COVID-19 restrictions and has the potential to be called off due to changes to these rules and regulations. The annual Echuca-Moama Wedding Expo has been revamped. Run by the Echuca-Moama Bridal and Events Festival Committee, the event has been renamed the Tie the Knot Festival and will be held on May 2 at Echuca Racecourse (if COVID-19 restrictions allow). President Shirley Tisher said the expo had been running for several years and needed a change. “We’re trying to revamp it and make it more intimate and hands-on,” she said. “The space is a lot smaller and will feel more personalised.
“We expect to have 45 to 50 exhibitors taking part and we’re hoping to have cake tasting and floral displays and food trucks doing food sampling. “We hope to use the licence from the racecourse so we can also have wine tasting. “We are also going to offer a high tea and a jumping castle for the kids. We have a lot of children who come along with their parents so it’s nice to have something for them to do.”

There will also be a small outdoor stage where vendors could hold interactive displays. Ms Tisher said Echuca-Moama continued to be a premier wedding destination for couples around Victoria and NSW. “About 50 per cent or more of couples who attend come from out of town, from places like Deniliquin, Shepparton, Swan Hill and Melbourne,” she said. “I think it’s because of the quality of our suppliers and reception places. “Obviously, the river plays a big part but the fact that we can offer such a broad scope of weddings here — from casual and DIY weddings to larger events under a marquee and the fancier fine dining options. “There are so many options as well as lots of accommodation to cater for guests.” With last year’s event cancelled due to COVID-19, Ms Tisher said she hoped for a better 2021. “We are looking forward to holding the festival this year, but it will obviously depend on the restrictions, but we’re hopeful things will be better this year,” she said. The Tie the Knot Festival will be held between 10 am and 3 pm on Sunday, May 2. For information, visit the website at echucamoamabridalevents.com.au or the Facebook page.

PAINTING THE TOWN
with colour
Wondrous technicolour will grace the northern Campaspe Shire in March as the Rochester Mural Festival charges ahead in 2021. Luckily punters weren’t denied their share of the kaleidoscopic gala during a COVID–19 interrupted 2020. And from March 13 to 20, fans of the festival will again be treated to a magnificent spectacle. The theme for 2021 has been pencilled in as ‘It Changed Our World’. Committee member Wayne Park said Mural Park was gearing up for another big week of artistic and cultural flair, and was eager to see what unfolds at Moore St this year. “(The theme) is completely up to the interpretation of the artist,” he said. “Some say transport changed the world, others say nature — you never know what they are going to come up with.”
An introductory evening will be held the night before the paint-off to meet the artists. Eight talented muralists have been unveiled ahead of the show: Jared Farrow, Kerryn Finch, Kerry Nicholson, Ellsworth Overton, Murray Ross/Jill Conway, Wendy P. Scott, Nathan Sims and Tina West. “This year we have artists from Bendigo, Melbourne — even local artist Tina West — which is great to see,” Mr Park said. “The artists will be fairly spaced out so hopefully we will be able to go out without interruption. “Overall the festival is really well supported by many local businesses, which is fantastic from our perspective.” WHAT’S ON Autumn 2021 33

some history
Echuca Historical Society Museum is in the old police station building.
There will be something for everyone at the Echuca Historical Society this year. Whether it’s books, exhibitions or even the chance to take your own bit of history home, you’ll have everything you wanted and more after COVID–19 spoilt 2020. First up, EHS is stocking a new book: A Family History of Cornelia Creek Run and the Simmies by Mike Hamblin. Although centred on the history of Cornelia Creek Run — owned by the author’s maternal great-great-granduncle George Simmie from 1870 until 1910 — the book is a romp through the history of the
European settlement of NSW and Victoria and much more. The establishment of the northern Victorian squatter runs and towns are detailed with comprehensive historical information and newspaper reports of the time. Several relevant historical confusions — often caused by family members bearing the same names and runs continually changing ownership — are corrected. You can pick this book up for just $46 at the Echuca Historical Society, Collins

Books Echuca, Echuca Moama Tourism and more. And if reading and writing lovers haven’t had enough yet, the society’s next exhibition will surely be the icing on the cake. The Written Word — Always Tells a Story exhibition will be open from March 6, and takes a look at some of the museum’s vast collection of letters, books and documents that give an insight to the lives of the early settlers in the region. From land documents, court records, shopping lists and personal letters, including letters from Henry Hopwood to his wife Charlotte during his brief but fruitful time in Echuca, the society’s records help build the story of the early days in Echuca and it’s pioneer settlers. Have you ever seen something in a museum and fallen so madly in love you wanted to take it home? Well EHS is letting you do just that at its Trash and Treasure market day on April 3.
As a way of finding new homes for some items at EHS, the team has gone digging through storage and found a whole world of wonders that could be yours. The items for sale have already been offered to other museums, but the household items for sale can usually be found in museums and are not required by them, as are the old wood working planes. As well as old objects there is a collection of books and magazines. Have a browse, buy a book or object and support the society’s funding. All of this and more can be found at 1 Dickson St, Echuca. The Echuca Historical Society is open for individuals or groups from 10 am until 3 pm daily. Grab your fishing rod, grab your bait and grab the family — the Torrumbarry Community Club Xtreme Marine Fishing Classic is back. After being cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, organisers are looking forward to hosting a great event on March 27 to 28. “Last year was supposed to be our best event yet,” Torrumbarry Community Club vicepresident Sam Colvin said. “It’s obviously disappointing that we had to cancel it, but we’re just happy to be holding one this year, depending on restrictions of course.” About 500 anglers are expected to take to the water, with fishing allowed from Torrumbarry Weir to Turner’s Bend. “We had 480 registrations last year and we’re expecting more this year,” Sam said. “We always get lots of families come along, as well as people from around Victoria. “There’s plenty of fish to be caught, including Murray cod, and everything is catch and release.” There will be prizes for longest native fish, largest cod, mystery length golden perch, carp lotto and longest carp, as well as junior prizes, raffles and lucky draw numbers on the day. “It’s a great weekend, with lots of fun to be had,” Sam said.
Fishing will be held from 7 am to 5.30 pm on Saturday, March 27, and 7 am to 11 am on Sunday, March 28. An awards presentation will follow. For information, go to Torrumbarry Community Club’s Facebook page.

Don’t miss the chance to catch the cutest flying marsupials in their natural habitats this March. Gliders will take centre stage at Campaspe River Reserve in Rochester from 7.30 pm on Saturday, March 27, courtesy of Strathallan Family Landcare. It will be a spectacle worth watching under the stars, with the shy nocturnal animals only known to come out to feed at night. Presented as part of Earth Hour — a movement supporting positive change for the environment — Strathallan Family Care’s Veronica Groat said the night was put on to give the public a rare glimpse of the endangered species. “Strathallan Family Landcare have held this event specifically on Earth Hour for the past three years,” she said. “The aim is to view the gliders in their natural habitat. Three species — the squirrel glider, sugar glider and the feathertail glider — are known to live in this part of northern Victoria.”
Strathallan Family Landcare has worked tirelessly to keep the extraordinary little creatures in the community. “Strathallan Family Landcare group have been building and installing nest boxes for the endangered gliders for almost 10 years,” Ms Groat said. “Over 300 nesting boxes have been installed along the Campaspe River from Rochester, through Echuca to Victoria Park where the river meets the Murray River. “The local community are very proud of this little species, a squirrel glider (Allan from Strathallan) has pride of place on a silo in the middle of the township of Rochester.” Ms Groat said numbers are limited to 10 people, with bookings essential. LOOK OUT! Little Shop of Horrors is back. For a second attempt. After Echuca-Moama Theatre Company had to cancel last year’s production due to COVID–19 restrictions, the show has been re-scheduled for the last two weekends of May. And director Glen McFadden couldn’t be more pleased. 42 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
“I’m very excited to get going again, and I think everyone has missed each other after last year,” he said. “We had some cast members who weren’t able to commit this year so we held auditions for those roles in late January and have come up with another great cast.
“Rehearsals started in February and it’s great to see the cast come together again. “The fact we have a small cast will mean we can do some good stuff and we will be able to abide by restrictions if we need to. “We are hopeful things can go according to plan this time and not have any surprises like last year.” Based on the 1960 black comedy film, Little Shop tells the story of insecure and put-upon florist’s clerk Seymour (played by Darcy Elliott) who pines for co-worker Audrey (Tamara Cadd). During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II (voiced by Gerard Oman and puppeteered by Jamison McFadden), which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling store. However, after Seymour feeds Audrey’s egotistical dentist boyfriend, Orin (Ethan O’Brien), to the plant after his accidental death, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant. As for the rest of the cast, street urchins are played by Lauren Douglas (Chiffon), Megan Scott (Crystal) and Harper Raverty (Ronette), while Mark Thomson plays flower shop owner Mr Mushnik. The ensemble, who have minor roles, include Honni Goulding, Brigid Dullard, Amber Halliwell and Ivy Jensen. “I really love the 60s feel of the music and the retro style of the show that takes you back to the old days of a sci-fi movie at the theatre,” Glen said. “We hope we can capture that with this show. And maybe even get you to burst into song as our cast will really knock your socks off.” Little Shop of Horrors will be staged at the Paramount Theatre on May 21 to 23 and May 28 to 29. For up-to-date information, follow EMTC-Echuca-Moama Theatre Company’s Facebook page.

Those apprehensive about entering the 2021 Women’s Victorian Bowls Carnival can breathe easy, as carnival chair Pat Schram said the committee was using the Bowls Victoria COVID-safe guidelines to ensure the event can go ahead.

Referred to as the ‘2020 plus one’ Women’s Victorian Bowls Carnival, the organisers have kept funding from the Campaspe and Moama shire councils given for last year’s event. The 2020 carnival was scrapped only three weeks beforehand, but Echuca Moama Tourism was able to refund all entries.
DISCOVER YESTERYEAR TODAY PS Pat Schram says the 2021 Women’s Victorian Bowls Carnival will follow COVID-safe protocols.
“We’ll be following Bowls Victoria’s COVID-safe guidelines this year,” Ms Schram said. “We had about 500 entries last year, so if guidelines don’t change, we could accommodate that number again.” Running from April 18 to 23, she said entries would be open for a shorter period of time this year, only one month. “It’s really encouraging to see people are still wanting this event. “Already people have booked their accommodation, so we know there are a few people coming. “And I’m sure there are some who will choose not to come, we recognise your first duty of care is to yourself.” Part of the carnival includes the welcome function, which Ms Schram said was going ahead, but would depend on the COVID guidelines at Rich River Golf Club. “It’s become an important part of the carnival,” she said. “Other than bowls, the week’s about having a good time and mixing with new people.” For more information, visit the Women’s Country Bowls Carnival Facebook page or: bowlsvic.org. au/events/womens-country-carnival/

CLASSIC CARS WILL ROLL into Tongala Nothing turns heads in a country town quite like a good old-fashioned show ‘n’ shine. That’s why Tongala Beersheba Rod, Custom and Classic Car and Bike Show organiser John Bentley is elated the event will return this year. The Tongala Soundshell-hosted show will take shape on Sunday, March 21 from noon to 6 pm. Selling the event as reinvigorating Tongala off the back of a hard year, Mr Bentley hoped to see plenty of faces out and about when the classics roll into town. “We’ve only ever had one show — we had around 80 cars, 40 to 50 bikes and a few trucks as well,” he said. “This year we are hoping to double those numbers — everything will be dependent on COVID-19, however. “We are also aiming to have entertainment in the form of a singer and the event will be fully catered. “It’s one for the town — everyone is welcome to come along.” While only the second instalment, Mr Bentley has high hopes for the event after witnessing the success of the inaugural show. “At the first show we raised $2500 for the swimming club, which they thought was pretty good,” he said. “Proceeds (from this year’s show) will be donated to the community groups in town — we haven’t made a definitive decision on which one yet.” Mr Bentley said pre-entry will be $10 for cars and $5 for bikes, while $15 and $10 will be charged for cars and bikes respectively on the day. Public admission is a gold coin donation.

ONE of Victoria’s most monumental rides will kick off in Echuca on March 27 and 28. The Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay is set to return after a COVID-19 forced hiatus last year, with the peloton embarking from Echuca to Port Fairy for the first time since 2019. It’s no mean feat — 500 km of road to tackle in fact — but the reward is always worth it. Ride strategy operator Jeff McLean cannot wait to see the riders line up along Echuca’s picturesque port area, and though he admitted some were still wary of coronavirus, it did not detract from the event’s magnitude. “We are definitely planning to go ahead with the Murray to Moyne race, but obviously it all depends on the coronavirus situation,” he said.

And for good reason. More than $20,000,000 has been raised since Murray to Moyne’s inaugural ride in 1987, with a host of charities weighing in to help support health organisations across Victoria. FOLLOW THE REGION’S
art trail
Art is fast becoming one of our region’s biggest drawcards. It’s putting small towns on the map and adding to the great culture of already popular locations. So, why not make a day out of exploring and discovering the stories behind the amazing artworks brightening up silos, streets and shops. You’ll get some pretty great photos to show for your efforts, too. ROCHESTER The first stop is Rochester, where the GrainCorp silos were painted in 2018 by well-known mural artist Jimmy D’Vate. The tribute to native wildlife depicts an azure kingfisher and squirrel glider with stunning detail and even looks terrific at night under lights. While in Rochester, check out Iddles Lane and the mural portraying the life of Australia’s greatest detective, Ron Iddles. There’s also a tribute to Bluey, the world’s longest living dog — man’s best friend to an Australian sheep and cattle farmer for an impressive 29 years and five months. The annual Rochester Mural Festival brings artists from around Australia, and the world, to town in friendly competition. 50 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
Even if you’re not in town for the festival, held in February/March, the murals are displayed for the next 12 months on the Northern Hwy opposite the train station. COLBINABBIN Next up is Colbinabbin, 25 minutes’ drive from Rochester. You can’t miss these silos — not only are they brightly coloured, they’re also huge, standing six across and towering over the small town. Painted by Tim Bowtell in 2020, the artwork features all aspects of the small farming town. There’s a look at Colbinabbin’s Farmers Picnic on the Hill in the late 1800s, the old train station and train, Lulu the fire truck, and the Colbinabbin Tractor Pull. Information boards at the viewing site offer plenty of background and a deeper look at Colbinabbin’s history. On the main street of town Mr Bowtell also left his mark on the site of the Colbinabbin Country Hotel, with his interpretation of Tom Roberts’ famous Shearing The Rams masterpiece.
TONGALA On your way from Colbinabbin to Picola, drop into Tongala — known for its street art and hay bale trail. More than 40 murals in town, most of them conveniently located on the main street, tell the story of Tongala, with landscapes, flora and fauna and historical pieces. The hay bale trail is a newer addition, started when a Tongala farming family painted television characters Bluey and Bingo in July 2020 for their children. Now the idea has taken off and cleverly painted hay bales are dotted around town, some with messages of thanks to frontline workers, but many are just for fun. See if you can find them all. PICOLA Picola’s silos are one of the more recent additions to the Australian Silo Art Trail, with the finishing touches left in December 2020. Rochester silos artist Jimmy D’Vate returned to the region to paint Picola’s artwork, choosing to represent the nearby Barmah Forest with a superb parrot and an egret perched amongst the greenery. Picola used to be known as the ‘hook’ as it was the end of the railway line. Mr D’Vate left a fun challenge by hiding a hook somewhere in the painting, so keep your eyes peeled. The silos are still functioning so public access is not permitted, however the artwork can be readily viewed from the roadside. Find the silos at 26 Moran St, Picola. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2021

LIGHTING UP THE MURRAY RIVER Horseshoe Lagoon will be transformed with a dazzling display of sound and light from May 8 to 22. Murray River Council’s Moama Lights will feature light installations and projections including theatrical fog, strobe and cutting edge moving light technology. The show will tell the story of Echuca-Moama through three different acts — Echuca-Moama indigenous culture, riverboat heritage and present-day life. Murray River Mayor Chris Bilkey encouraged residents to get along to the event. “This is the most spectacular outdoor lighting event that rural Australia’s seen,” he said. “It’s as spectacular as those in Melbourne and Bendigo but placed into a bush setting, which
makes it a wonderful visual spectacle for visitors and locals alike.” The show will start from the underside of the Echuca-Moama bridge then wind through Horseshoe Lagoon to a finale at the Murray River. Prepare to be mesmerised by a field of native flowers, ever changing display of spectacular colours, twinkling stars, floating leaves and local art. The show is free to attend and will operate daily between May 8 and 22, from 6 pm to 9 pm. Tickets are available at: echucamoama.com/ moama-lights Moama Lights is funded by the NSW Government’s Streets As Shared Spaces Program. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2021 55
A host of classic cars will roll into Echuca for the Volksclub Bendigo’s annual ice-cream run.
SWEET TREAT FOR
car lovers
Are you a Volkswagen enthusiast? Do you get a thrill from patina hues, purring motors and more? Hitting the streets on Sunday, March 7, the Volksclub Bendigo will roar into Echuca for its annual ice-cream run. And it is sure to be a sight to behold. A gleaming brigade of Volkswagens old and new, along with a myriad of other classics, will turn heads along Echuca’s esplanade before stopping to enjoy a sweet treat. Volksclub Bendigo member Rhett Nankervis said the event was a red-letter day on the club’s calendar, and eagerly awaited the opportunity to fire up the engines again. “The tradition has been going for 10 years at least,” he said. “It is always a great day and is definitely a highlight for the club — we usually have up to 40 cars attend.
“We’ll get to Echuca at around 12.30 pm, arriving at the historic wharf area.” Mr Nankervis said the run went ahead last year, and this year the club would be extending the invitation to other classic enthusiasts. “Last year we managed to get the ice-cream run in just before COVID-19 hit,” he said. “We went to the local pub, and then families went off to the park, the singles went shopping, etc. “It started out as just a Volkswagen club event, but we have opened it up to other car clubs from Bendigo to attend. “We will also have a few cars from Echuca join us this year.” Mr Nankervis said other car clubs were welcome to come along on the day. HISTORY COMES ALIVE
in Lockington
Rev your engines and dust off your pride and joy, the Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex Annual Tractor Rally is back on for 2021.
After having to cancel last year’s event, organisers are hopeful COVID-19 won’t interfere and the event will go ahead as planned. It will be tractors and engines galore over the Anzac Day weekend and the event is sure to delight enthusiasts and families alike. Over the road, the Living Heritage Complex will be open all weekend with plenty to uncover inside. “We have a few different exhibits we hope will entice people to come along,” organiser Joe Chappell said. “A 1910 tractor and a home-built tractor that’s been restored after it was burnt in a hay fire. “It’s as good as a factory-built tractor.” The rally is widely known and draws crowds from across the region.
“A lot of them travel 1000 km to come here — we’re very proud of that,” Mr Chappell said. “Some have come from Narromine in NSW (near Dubbo). “We look after them — there’s full caravan and camping facilities available, showers and toilets.” Organisers are hoping about 400 people each day will take in the attractions. Catering will be available and a movie night is planned for the Saturday. Entry to the event is $5 per person, and free for primary school-aged children when accompanied by an adult. Around town, the Lockington Scarecrow Competition will also be on display so make sure to keep an eye out. The event subject to change based on COVID-19 restrictions. WHAT’S ON Autumn 2021 59

Whether you’re a long-time local or from out of town, it’s never been a better time visit the Kyabram Fauna Park. Boasting more than 600 native animals and the largest functioning wetlands of any wildlife park or zoo in Victoria the long-standing tourist draw is continuing on the up. In 2020, the Fauna Park welcomed the world’s most dangerous bird the Southern Cassowary, Endangered Eastern Quoll and Spot-tailed Quoll to their ranks, with Tasmanian Devils, exotic reptiles and some other highly interactive and engaging species coming in 2021. The development has been guided by their recently designed masterplan — funded through Regional Development Victoria — which will set the park up for a positive future throughout the next 20 years. The masterplan is a long-term vision for the Park and is based on contemporary zoo-keeping principles, creating a more enticing visitor experience and much improved surroundings for animals. It has been designed to enable development at the Park to be undertaken in stages and as funding becomes available. Kyabram Fauna Park’s purpose is to provide meaningful and memorable visitor experiences that educate and inspire action to protect wildlife and its habitat, as well as acknowledge the Park’s strong conservation history. The exciting Plan proposes new species and exhibits as well as upgrades to existing exhibits and redevelopment of the wetlands. Scheduled upgrades set for 2021 and 2022 are a new reptile house with never before seen species for Kyabram, as well as a new visitor entry and upgraded education and conservation centre. The Park also has a schedule packed full of once-in-a-lifetime experienced designed to bring visitors up close and personal with their wildlife. (or scooter or skateboard) Barham is in for an action-packed weekend in February, with local skaters, BMXers and scooter-riders going head-to-head. On Sunday, February 28, the Australia Skate Park League series will roll into Barham Skate Park, with locals encouraged to compete for a regional place. Held in partnership with YMCA Action Sports, Skate Australia, cluBarham and Murray River Council, locals aged five and up are expected to take part in the event. The scooter, BMX and skateboard competitions are a part of a structured and
interconnected Australian Skate Park League series held across the country. YMCA Action Sports specialist Lily Smith said the competition at Barham was a chance for young locals to showcase their talent. “There are some amazing up-andcoming skaters, scooter-riders and BMXers,” she said. “These competitions give them the spotlight they deserve.”

She also said this program, as well as skateboarding being added to the Tokyo Olympic Games, was changing the face of traditional skateboarding. “The series presents a great opportunity for young skateboarders to harness their skill and progress through a structured national pathway.” There are more than 100 Skate Park League events a year, making up the Australian Skate
Park League, which is the biggest and most established grass roots skateboard, scooter and BMX series in Australia. As well as showcasing talent, the league also creates opportunities for young people to gain practical training in skate park event management. The Barham round has been brought to life through a partnership between Murray River Council, YMCA NSW, cluBarham and Skate Australia. Other major sponsors of the SA League include Bad Boy Australia, Element, Goliath, Skater Maps, Scooter Hut and Root Industries. The competition will be held on Sunday, February 28 from 11 am to 4 pm at Barham Recreation Reserve. The mini miler was a hit with the kids at the Cohuna Bridge to Bridge. 66 WHAT’S ON Autumn 2021
WITH the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 became the year of home exercise. Everyone and their dog was riding, running or hitting the home gym to beat the boredom. Now it’s time to test those fitness levels with the Cohuna Bridge to Bridge back in 2021. The event will take place on Sunday, March 14 with a range of competitions to suit participants of all ages and abilities. They include a half marathon (21.1 km) trail run, 12.5 km trail run, 6.5 km fun run/walk, mini miler for the juniors, 6.5 km junior cycle, 25 km cycle and 50 km cycle. There is also the option of competing in the events virtually. Race organiser Jess Holgate said if the need arose due to COVID-19 restrictions being tightened, all events would be moved online.
“We’re looking forward to an exciting day of racing,” Ms Holgate said. “We will be raising money for the Cohuna District Hospital theatre and recovery refurbishment. “Previously the money raised has helped to buy two specialised chairs for patients in the dialysis and infusion day clinic, and an endoscopy camera for theatre. “It’s fantastic to think the funds we are raising go on to help people in our community. “We want to make 2021 as big as possible.” Participants can register at bridgetobridge.org.au or by following the links on the Bridge to Bridge Facebook page.

Moama’s desperate plea
WE’RE OPEN FOR BUSINESS
MOAMA operators are in dire straits. Abandoned and empty after Victoria closed its border to NSW on New Year’s Eve, causing a mass exodus of holiday makers, local operators are on the brink of collapse. In fact, Murray Regional Tourism estimated that 35,000 visitors left the region within 24 hours and together with cancellations received since, $178 million has been lost to the regional economy. Operators are now calling on the government to Turn the Bubble Green before it’s too late. The Riverine Herald has joined this campaign and, over the next several editions, will be revealing the devastating impact the border closure has had on Moama businesses and what you can do to help our twin towns survive. Special report, starts page 2.

RIVER OPENS FOR BUSINESS By Andrew Johnston THE NSW Government has opened the Murray River to regional Victoria following a relentless campaign from Echuca-Moama's leaders. The government paved the way on Monday, September 28, for paddlesteamers and Victorian houseboat operators to resume operations, with regional Victorians able to board without a permit if they have not been to a COVID-19 hotspot in 14 days.
But the same cannot be said for those who operate from the NSW side of the river, who are unable to accept passengers from Victoria. Still, Murray River Paddlesteamers director Rohan Burgess, who has been at the forefront of campaigning for the river's re-opening, said the news was a game-changer. “It’s been a huge community effort,” he said. “So many people within not only the tourism industry but around our
towns have done their bit to make sure our voices were heard. It's been a hard slog, but we've been able to get there.” Mr Burgess said re-opening to the remainder of regional Victoria was essential. “About 40 per cent of our business comes from regional Victoria,” he said. “Since essentially March we’ve had nothing. Now we have close to half our customers returning and that gives us the opportunity to begin to rebuild.”
Mr Burgess said the flow-on impact would also be great for the community. “This brings more people into our town, which means they go to restaurants, cafés and shops while they are here. It’s extra money coming into the economy, which will be great for the recovery of the whole town.” Campaspe Shire Council chief executive Declan Moore said opening the river was a great outcome for Echuca businesses.
“We welcome the announcement to no longer require a border pass to use the Murray River, and acknowledge and thank the NSW Government and the two state border commissioners for their efforts in this regard,” he said. “It will be fantastic to see the local tourism industry safely coming back to life, injecting much-needed financial support into local businesses and into our community generally. — Continued page 2

FAMILY FUN AT
Easter fair The annual Mathoura Easter Fair will be back this year better than ever.
Held on Easter Saturday, April 3, at Memorial Park, the Mathoura Events Committee is hoping to bring the fair “back to its roots”. The committee’s Polly Benham said the family friendly event would have something for everyone. “We expect it to be bigger and better, bringing back some of the old fair games,” she said. “We will have tug-of-war, best dressed bikes, Easter bonnets, street parade, street stalls and lots of fun for the community. “The parade down the main street will have music, people on bikes and cars (show and shine). “Kids are invited to make their own Easter-themed hat and there will be a prize for best dressed.” Although there is something for everyone, the feature event is always the Easter egg hunt.

Chocolate eggs are scattered across the park and children of all ages are armed with bags ready to snatch up as many as they can. “Wilbert the Easter Rabbit will be walking around, so you can snap a photo with him and get some eggs from his basket,” Polly said. “We will also be drawing our annual Easter raffle, with first, second and third prizes, and have a spinning wheel with great prizes too.” If you get hungry, the local fire brigade will be firing up the barbecue. The fair runs from 9 am to 1 pm. The next day, Easter Sunday, the annual duck race will be run on the Murray River at Picnic Point.
Hundreds of bright yellow rubber ducks will take to the water, with money raised from the event going toward supporting Mathoura Football and Netball Club. For information, go to the Mathoura Events Committee Facebook page.

Stanhope and District Development Committee member Glenda Cowie (left) encouraged the public to hunt out a bargain at the Stanhope Monster Garage Sale.
CATCH A MONSTER bargain at Stanhope
They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. A sure-fire way to test this theory lies within Stanhope’s humming market scene. The Stanhope Monster Garage Sale, a monthly trade meet which keeps the town a-buzzing, is never one to miss. Now in its 11th year, the chance to swap and sell at Birdwood Ave is back on Sunday, March 14. Stanhope and District Development Committee member Glenda Cowie said the event’s organisers were thrilled to launch again after emerging from a heavily disrupted 2020. “We have had a couple already this year; people have been coming through, we just need the stall numbers to pump up a bit,” she said. 76 WHAT'S ON Autumn 2021
“Hopefully it will start to pick up over the next couple of months. Autumn is usually our busy period along with Christmas.” Running from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm, the garage sale’s protocol differs slightly from previous years due to coronavirus. But according to Mrs Cowie, one constant remains — bargains. “In order to be COVID-19 compliant we have asked all of the stallholders to have sanitiser on their stalls,” she said. “For the rest of the public, we have asked those who can’t socially distance to wear masks. “Come along and find a bargain.” Those wishing to a book a site for a stall can phone 5857 2866 between 11 am and 3 pm, or otherwise on 0427 539 110.
