WITH A HOP, SKIP AND A JUMP WE’VE LANDED IN THAT PART OF THE YEAR WHERE IT SEEMS LIKE WE’VE BEEN FLUNG FROM SUMMER TO SPRING AT 100 KM/H. Just yesterday we were spending lazy days by the river, sipping iced coffees with friends or enjoying a beer in the breeze as we listened to live music. Then we blinked — and it was cold, really cold; and wet, really wet — so we stayed indoors. Now the sun seems to be with us just a little longer each day, while people in the street and in the shops are starting to have smiles on their faces, brightening as we spend more time outside — but in fewer layers (in my case read 12) of clothing. Even with the sporadic snap lockdown here and there, 2021 was the year that flew by. Sadly, however, many industries are still reeling from the effects of the pandemic, as we all adjust to the idea of a spring in our own backyards.

Bringing art to the community VOLUNTEER-RUN GALLERY THE FOUNDRY ARTS SPACE IS THE HOME FOR ART IN THE ECHUCA-MOAMA REGION. Exhibiting everything from professional artists to community members with a good photographic eye, the space has a large rotation of artworks for visitors and locals to take a closer look at. It’s run by the Echuca Moama Arts Initiative, a committee focused on increasing the profile of art in Echuca-Moama and surrounds. Committee member Tim Smallwood said the gallery had grown significantly since it first opened, and some visitors had even been known to mistake it for a commercial gallery. “We’re volunteer-run, and I think we actually have a strong reputation,” Tim said. He said the gallery welcomed about 12,000 visitors a year, which was “pretty good for a gallery of any sort”. The Foundry rotates exhibitions every month, providing art critics and enthusiasts alike with new pieces to appraise. The Foundry also invites recognised artists regularly to display their work and run workshops for locals. “That’s part of the process of bringing art back to the community,” Tim said. 8
What’s On
To round out the end of 2021, the Foundry is displaying a range of local painting from the community and local artists. The committee also has some exciting plans up its sleeve, including talks of hosting ‘progressive gallery evenings’ in collaboration with other art spaces in the area. “Three or four galleries will be opening so people can go to one after the other,” Tim said. For more information about upcoming exhibitions and events, follow The Foundry Arts Space on social media.

Pour a drink and enjoy the music ECHUCA-MOAMA’S OWN POP AND POUR FESTIVAL IS COMING IN HOT ON NOVEMBER 27. After the cancellation of last year’s event, the progressive festival is up and ready to celebrate local musicians, award winning wineries, brewers and distillers. The line-up for the day includes seven hit venues, closed to the general public to give patrons an authentic, live experience. Shuttle services will be running from 11 am to 7 pm. Each venue will host two musical acts, and featured on the agenda is Echuca-based artist Amelia May along with Daine Runnells, and acoustic duo Gone Rogue. For a day of vibrant fun, packed full of entertainment and good people, festival director Jacqui Wegener says this year’s is one not to be missed.

troupe — with the show having to cancel performances in the past year-and-a-half thanks to COVID-19. Anthony insisted the show would go on, the COVID-safe show that is, with Anthony casting new performers after the most recent coronavirus outbreak in Sydney.
A creation of Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance former principal dancer Anthony Street, Celtic Illusion amalgamates Anthony’s love of Irish river dancing, magic and Broadway.
“Most of our cast is from Sydney,” he said. “I’m flying in performers from New Zealand, Melbourne and Tasmania to pull together a cast.”
“There’s something in there for everyone,” he said. “There’s dance, there’s magic, there’s live music.
Book now to see Celtic Illusion Reimagined on October 24 at the Paramount Theatre, Echuca.

Blooming marvelous natives on show THE ANNUAL ECHUCA-MOAMA AUSTRALIAN PLANT SOCIETY NATIVE FLOWER SHOWCASE IS BACK AGAIN, HOPING TO INSPIRE GREEN THUMBS AND NOVICE GARDENERS ALIKE TO PLANT MORE NATIVES. The flower showcase displays the array of native blooms that can be found in the gardens of Australian Plant Society members, according to society president Sue Robertson. There will also be four nurseries with plants available for purchase, and information sessions with experts about growing and caring for native plants. An in-house florist will create bouquets on the day using natives, and a bush tucker talk session is set to return for a second year. “The main purpose of the flower show is to get people interested and involved with growing native plants,” Sue said.
The society’s last showcase in 2019 attracted garden enthusiasts from across Victoria and southern NSW. “They come from everywhere,” Sue said. “Hopefully it’ll grow bigger and bigger each year.” This year will be the society’s ninth native flower showcase, and will display specimens like emu bush wattle, and bottlebrush labelled with their scientific names (eremophila acacia and callistemon, respectively). The APS Native Flower Showcase is scheduled for October 8 and 9 at Echuca Masonic Lodge. Entry is $5 and includes tea or coffee.

Race day to stop Echuca-Moama once again POLISH UP THOSE RM WILLIAMS AND DUST OFF YOUR FASCINATORS, THE MOAMA BOWLING CLUB MELBOURNE CUP DAY RACES WILL RETURN AND RUN “AS NORMAL AS POSSIBLE” THIS NOVEMBER, ACCORDING TO ECHUCA RACING CLUB GENERAL MANAGER GARRY ARMSTRONG. He said the club was hoping to hold a COVIDsafe race day that lives up to the community’s expectations, after a spectator-free event last year. “We’re certainly planning to have crowds back,” Garry said. “We’ve already been approved for the event, which is good. That’s the first tick.” Beginning 30 years ago, the cup day race has been the club’s biggest day of the year for a decade, with Echuca-Moama locals champing at the bit to take advantage of the public holiday and congregate trackside for the race that stops the nation. “It’s really a day for the locals,” Garry said. “It’s a happy, friendly country atmosphere.” Live music, fashion competitions and activities for the kids are all in the works for Tuesday, November 2. Garry promised they would find alternative ideas for the kids if the more traditional hits don’t comply with COVID-19 restrictions. “It’s a pretty important part of the day to have something there for the kids,” he said.

Food and drinks the American way THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER FLIES HIGH AT THE AMERICAN HOTEL IN ECHUCA. As the oldest hotel in Echuca (established in 1865), the pub holds prime real estate in town. “We’re the big red brick pub on the corner of Hare St,” venue manager Harry Ripon said. “You know it’s going to be a good time at the Yank,” he said. “We pride ourselves on having an amazing atmosphere as soon as you walk in the door.” The hotel’s refurbishment used timber from the original Port of Echuca to honour its 156-year history. The latest extension is making use of the space in the carpark, with container bars providing food and drinks to outdoor patrons. “We’ve got two big containers that we’ve moved into the carpark,” Harry said.
The large venue caters to a wide range of patrons, offering live music and drink deals as part of ‘rooftop sessions’ on the weekends. There are also more laid-back spaces to cater for those that prefer a more relaxed environment, Harry said. “We pride ourselves on being diverse and being able to cater for anyone’s needs.” The extensive food and drinks menu does just that. Food-wise, the hotel specialise in smoked meat and American delicacies and the bars are stocked with an array of craft beer, ciders and cocktails, along with pub classics. “Our people, our staff and our customers are the most important thing to us,” Harry said.
“We’ve got 20 taps out there and we’ve also got a kitchen.” What’s On

It’s nearly show time for Echuca-Moama BACK WITH A BANG THIS NOVEMBER, THE ECHUCA MOAMA SHOW IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A FUN FAMILY DAY OUT. Echuca Moama Show committee member Sheena Mason said after the disappointment of having to cancel the 2020 show everyone was excited for an uplift in the community and local business alike. “Many locals who have been showing animals, cooking or creating displays for the pavilion or simply attending the show as a social event have really missed out,” she said. The public can enter crafts, needlework and cookery in the pavilion display, or simply admire talented local entries. Beef and dairy cattle shows will also be going ahead, as well as the horse and dog events. If motoring’s more your speed, the ute and car show is sure to wow with elaborate and highpowered builds for work and pleasure. And make sure you don’t miss the unforgettable
fireworks display on Saturday night. An opportunity for local businesses to get involved with the community, Sheena said she was hoping for a strong return to the show. “It’s been a really hard year for everyone so it’s something to look forward to,” she said. Raise a glass to a good brew ECHUCA DISTILLERY OWNERS DAVID AND FIONA DE VRIES RETIRED TO ECHUCA FROM MELBOURNE IN 2012. “This was going to be my retirement project, but it’s gotten out of hand,” David said. “Now there’s no more retirement, but we really enjoy it.” During the pandemic, the distillery was forced to diversify, and now that diversity is one of its core strengths. “We’re really proud of the business, especially when we didn’t even reach our first birthday before COVID hit,” David said. Originally making eight types of gin — including a Navy-strength variety and stunning purple Butterfly Pea and Passionfruit variety — the Echuca Distillery has released a locally made hand sanitiser to assist with shortages local first responders experienced. “COVID brought lots of new challenges for us, and made us look at the whole business,” David said. “We made hand sanitiser for the local ambos and fireys at no charge to them, because we just wanted to contribute. “We bought 5000 litres of old wine from St Anne’s to make the hand sanitiser.” Echuca Distillery has also expanded to different types of liquor, with a range of vodkas featuring Australian native
botanicals, and even into agave spirits. Agave spirits have the same components as tequila, with the caveat that all spirits called ‘tequila’ must be made in Mexico — like ‘champagne’ for French product and ‘sparkling wine’ for everyone else. Echuca Distillery produces three types of agave: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Tequila and agave spirit aficionados may be familiar with gold and silver varieties, but Echuca Distillery’s bronze is a special concoction that is unique to this powerhouse local producer. The bronze variety is unaged, much like the silver variety, but is infused with native botanicals wattleseed, pepperberry and saltbush, producing an unmatched and unique depth of flavour. The distillery has also expanded its customer base, capitalising on the online shopping surge during the pandemic. Gin, vodka and agave ‘flights’ were available for purchase online to reflect their in-house menu of spirit ‘flights’, which includes three smaller bottles of liquor and a tonic water or light soda specifically designed pairing.

Work up a sweat and beat the steam JOIN AUSTRALIA’S ONLY RUNNING RACE AGAINST A CLASSIC PADDLE-STEAMER THIS SPRING, AS THE SWEAT VS STEAM FUNDRAISER RETURNS TO ECHUCA ON OCTOBER 3.
Open to people of all ages and abilities, the course is broken up into two distances — a 5 km and a 10 km course — boasting a brilliant view of the Murray River. Running since 1998 and after a false start last year — with the community-driven event being cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions — the Echuca Tri Club will host the race for the first time after taking over from the previous organisers. Club member Nick Lee said it was a great way to give back to the community. “It’s a great day for the athlete and great for charity as well,” he said. “It really means a lot to everyone.” The event is entirely volunteer-run and supported by local businesses and individuals, doing everything from marshalling and management to sponsorship and providing prizes.

October 3 | Echuca “All the entry fee money is donated back to the community,” Nick said. Funds raised are collected by the Sweat Vs Steam Community Foundation and distributed through a grant system. Previous grants have gone towards restoring local primary school grounds, paying school camp fees for disadvantaged children, and funding school breakfast programs. People or organisations in need can apply, with funds allocated according to necessity and availability. The race will be dependent upon COVID-19 related restrictions and a council-issued COVID-safe plan. Ticket prices are expected to be the same as the previous event, between $35 and $40 each. Take the hard work out of cycling
What began as a hobby has turned into a business for David and Suzanna Barry.
Green Pedal offers a range of e-bikes for tourists and locals alike to take for a spin, or even join David on a guided tour. “Not only are you seeing a lot more and going a lot further than you normally would if you were walking but it’s a fun activity,” David said. David’s guided tours are filled with local knowledge about the twin towns’ trails, landmarks and history. Guided tours range from 90 minutes to a full day’s ride. If you’d prefer to choose your own adventure, you can set off with just an e-bike (or a good old-fashioned push bike) and a map to explore the region yourself. For bookings, head to greenpedal.com.au or call David on 0490 048 239.

Running since 1969, the race covers 404 km over four days, with participants able to compete as soloists, duos or teams and relays of any size. Teams raise and distribute money for community causes that matter to them, with past donations going to local sport teams, mental health support, indigenous services and more. One of the organisers, Shane O’Brien, said they were grateful for any amount of money raised but recognised the coronavirus pandemic may have an impact on the public’s ability to donate. “A lot of local causes really rely on that money. We’d like to raise as much money as possible,” he said. To make the race COVID-safe some changes have been made, including minimising ground staff for the paddlers and increasing distancing and checkin requirements.
Spectators will also be reduced at each checkpoint, but there are plenty of spots to sit and cheer the competitors on. “It’s really good for people to watch and cheer on the paddlers,” Shane said. Register at massivemurraypaddle.org.au until November 10, and the race runs from November 22 to 26. Prices start at $360 for an adult single paddler and go up to $500 for multi-day single entry, with differing prices for relays, school groups and larger teams. The easiest way to donate is via individual teams’ online donation platform, which will be available via the Massive Murray Paddle website. “The ultimate goal is to get the event run with about 300 paddlers going past on the river,” Shane said. Trophy cabinet opens to the public WHEN IT COMES TO WHO HAS SCORED THE MOST TROPHIES IN THE TWIN TOWNS, THE WINNER — BY THE PROVERBIAL MILE — WOULD HAVE TO BE ECHUCA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. And in every case it has received trophies without even breaking into a sweat. Now from September 1, EHS is going the whole hog and deciding to show off its incredible array of silverware in its latest exhibition: Trophies over the Years. No-one else could come within cooee of the society’s trophy cabinet, exhibition co‑ordinator Jan Hollingsworth said.
7–11 Warren St, Echuca | Ph: 5480 2033 www.holdenmuseum.com.au Open 7 Days 9am – 5pm 100 metres from the Port of Echuca National Holden Motor Museum
But only because the society’s museum has become the repository for literally dozens of plaques, cups, medallions and all things achievement.
“Mostly it has been for a good reason, although occasionally a sad one, but as various sporting clubs and/or associations have closed, merged or changed direction, their trophies have come to rest in our storage unit,” Jan said. “As clubs have come and gone, when there was nowhere to store these trophies, the historical society was the obvious place,” she said. “A place where they could be kept and looked after so they were safe and sound for future generations to enjoy.”
THE WHITEHOUSE ACCOMMODATION
Jan said apart from the obvious sporting codes like footy, netball, cricket, tennis, shooting and racing, the EHS trophy cabinet also has a touch a refinement, with musical expertise trophies, and other shields and plaques presented to regional bands. She said it would be one of the society’s more unusual exhibitions because, even though they were often of historic significance, many trophies were only relevant to a small part of the local population. “Some are for individuals lost in the mists of time, while others are for once legendary local footy teams or lost sports. “Overall they really are worth a look, because many of them are in styles rarely seen today, some will be familiar to other people and I would love it if some of our more senior citizens could drop in while the exhibition runs and see if they can provide any information on some of our older ones.”
2–10 GUESTS 4 BEDROOMS | 4 BATHROOMS PRIVATE HEATED POOL CENTRAL LOCATION
Jan said at the same time as the trophies are dusted off and put on display there will also be a small selection of seldom-seen framed pictures of paddle-steamers and other river boats on show. You can drop into the museum at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, between 10 am and 2 pm, seven days a week. Group bookings are welcome. Further details from 5480 1325 or eh.soc@ bigpond.com

Bargains galore at giant garage sale IF YOU CAN’T SAY NO TO A GOOD DEAL, THE ANNUAL ROCHESTER TOWN GARAGE SALE IS WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. Picking up from the cancellation of last year’s event, the town-wide garage sale will take place on Saturday, October 30 from 8 am to 2 pm. The garage sale includes houses from across the Rochester district, with up to 100 houses participating in previous years. Run by Rochester Community House, co‑ordinator Amanda Logie said lockdowns had been a good opportunity to consider what’s actually needed in the home. “It’s a chance for the local community to clean up and clean out,” Amanda said. Hit items on offer in past sales have included bikes, clothing, vintage goods and even the occasional kayak.
Make sure to dive in early to catch a few bargains, as this is one event that draws a crowd. “It brings a massive amount of people into the area,” Amanda said. “The flow-on effect of that is just great, people are spending their money and supporting local businesses. “It’s a win-win for the community.” Maps will be made available at selected local Rochester stores. Keep up to date on all the latest information via the Rochester Town Garage Sale Facebook page.

General manager Vicky Lowry said the team was “absolutely gutted”. “It’s not only a blow for us, it’s a blow for the community,” she said. 68

announced, with the team working hard to keep supporting local acts. “We’re working with our artists to see who will carryover and who we will add to it,” Vicky said. Each year the festival brings an $8 million stimulus to the region, with $1.5 million going to local businesses and about $70,000 going to community groups.
To continue supporting the festival, Vicky encouraged festival-goers to keep their 2021 tickets. “We have some really loyal patrons,” she said. “If you can support us, please roll your ticket over (and) buy some merch.” Tickets to the 2022 Deniliquin Ute Muster will be announced later this year. Enjoy a great family day out A CLASSIC CELEBRATION OF COUNTRY LIFE — THE MATHOURA SPEED SHEAR — IS DEFINITELY NOT TO BE MISSED WITH ACTIVITIES, STALLS AND COMPETITIONS FOR EVERYONE. Headlining the event is the speed shearing competition, where competitors race to see who can shear a sheep the fastest. Men’s, women’s, seniors’ and intermediate divisions will be competing for a share of $12,000 in prize money. The wood choppers are also sharing the spotlight as they fight it out in teams of four, while community members can compete in a tug-of-war competition. In between these fast-paced competitions, check out stallholders and car boot sales including local candles, artisan potbelly stoves, potted plants and shearing supplies. Local food and drinks will also be available at the licensed bar run by Mathoura Football Club, as well as a coffee cart. There’s even something for the kids including
jumping castles, show bags, fairy floss and face painting. “We’re very keen to have it up and going again … it’ll be good to have some events,” organiser Anne Robertson said. The gold coin donation upon entry will go to cancer fundraising for the Mathoura Bra Fence, which supports people in the local community living with cancer. “You can donate if you want to — there’ll be a box to add extra money (at entry),” Anne said. The event is planned to run on Saturday, October 30 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Mathoura football grounds. Fundraiser to be held in Echuca-Moama for first time
By Meg Saultry Make sure to circle Sunday, September 5, in your diary — Johnno’s Run is coming home. One of Community Living and Respite Services’ biggest fundraisers, this year’s event will be the first to be run in Echuca-Moama, and CLRS chief executive Leah Taaffe couldn’t be more thrilled to see it launched in its own community. “We’re really excited to bring Johnno’s Run home to the EchucaMoama community in September,” Ms Taaffe said. “And we’re delighted to work with all our major sponsors and the Murray River Council to make it happen.” For those with a keen eye, September 5 is Father’s Day and the CLRS team is encouraging families to get out and participate, with a pre-event warm-up — Run with Dad Dash — a special feature on the day. Ms Taaffe said the goal was to get as many people registered for the run and representing Johnno’s Run out in the community as possible. “We’ve had 177 people travel down to Melbourne to do Run Melbourne as part of the Johnno’s Run team in the past, and seeing all of those people with their Johnno’s Run singlet on has been amazing,” she said. “Hopefully we get at least that many, and we are hoping to have 300 runners, all in their Johnno’s Run singlets, and running through the
New footpath has school community jumping for joy “There was just nothing here,” said Jodi Ujimoto, one of the group's cofounders. "This is a celebration of all our hard work and campaigning.” In collaboration with Campaspe Shire Council, in particular Cr Daniel Mackrell, ATEAM hoped to improve the daily school commute for the 40 per cent of Echuca East students who lived east of Bowen St. “It's the first piece of a big puzzle,” ATEAM co-founder Chelsea Dridan said. "We'd love to let our kids ride, but we aren't able to.”

ATEAM's goal is for "everyone across Echuca-Moama to be able to safely walk or cycle from their front door. Having a connecting footpath along the length of Eyre St is the first step to enable the children of Echuca East to be able to walk or ride safely to school.” The collaboration with Campaspe Shire Council and Healthy Hearts Victoria aims to connect Echuca East to the west side of town with safe pathways for walking and cycling. Runners can also set up fundraising pages. To encourage those efforts, anyone who raises $250 to $500, $501 to $1500 or more than $1500 will go into the mix to win a number of fantastic prizes. $50,000 from Johnno’s Run this year, with all fundraising going to CLRS’ Opening Doors Project. “It’s an ambitious target, but we’re hoping to get somewhere close to that $50,000, if not smash it out of the park,” she said. The Opening Doors Project was founded to build homes for people with disability in the Echuca-Moama community, with the current project overseeing the build of four units at Barry St, Echuca. “The town planning has been approved for that through Campaspe Shire Council and we’re currently out to tender with the builders, so hopefully construction will begin in August,” Ms Taaffe said. People can also get behind the project by supporting CLRS’ Mega Draw, which is currently selling tickets for its July draw. This month’s bonus prize include a $500 voucher to Morrisons Winery, a hamper from I Want I Need valued at $285 and a $150 voucher for Amcal Pharmacy. Training for Johnno’s Run has started on Mondays from 5.15pm and will continue until September. The meeting point is at the kiosk at Riverboat Dock on Watson St, Echuca. ■ To register for this year’s Johnno’s Run, head to https:/ /clrs.org.au/johnnosrun or to set up a JustGiving fundraising page, head to www.justgiving.com/campaign/ johnnosrun2021

OUR COL REACHES HIS GOAL By Andrew Johnston
IT MAY be a year later than planned, but a dream is finally a reality. Col Pearse, already Australian swimmer number P310, will soon be a Paralympian. The Bamawm local is one of the new faces in a 32-person team who will head to Tokyo in Australian colours in August for the Paralympics, looking to add to Australia's 420 medals since the first Paralympics in 1960.
She’s funny, entertaining and loves to laugh — Echuca’s Meg O’Sullivan has been announced as one of the contestants on the upcoming season of Channel Seven’s Farmer Wants a Wife. Full story on page 2.
But it came after an interesting week. With the national swimming trials in Adelaide, the Australian Paralympic team was being decided. But he was not there, he was in Melbourne. “We got advised when it looked like we might end up in lockdown to get out of Melbourne,” he said. “But I couldn't go. I'm in the middle of year 12 and have other commitments so it simply wasn't the best time for me to leave.” — Continued Page 4

Natural beauty speaks for itself at The Timbercutter OVERLOOKING THE JUNCTION OF THE MURRAY AND EDWARD RIVERS, THE TIMBERCUTTER IN MATHOURA IS THE PLACE TO BE WHEN CATCHING UP WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS. Lined with red gum wall panelling and featuring polished red gum floorboards, open fireplace, leather chesterfield lounges, handcrafted furniture and a 6 m long red gum bar, little extra is needed for this café, bar, restaurant and function venue. Situated on an 850-acre farm, The Timbercutter is open for lunch and dinner as well as private functions. The Timbercutter’s Kalli Crump said scattered throughout the property were vast wetland areas — home to thousands of native animals. “That’s what makes us so different to other venues. Our unique and secluded location, and personalised and flexible options,” she said. All-inclusive packages are available for events, with the restaurant overlooking a private ceremony site on the junction of the Murray and Edward rivers. 76

“We have a very personalised approach and are extremely flexible,” Kalli said. “While we have suggested packages, we are happy to work people get what they want.” The restaurant holds up to 150 guests, but outside can accommodate double that. The team will work with you to ensure your menu is everything you desire, while full catering and bar are included. “We felt like part of the family”, “exceptional food and service” and “absolutely perfect from beginning to end, a dream come true” are just some of the comments left by satisfied customers.
October 16 | Kyabram
Community backs show’s return THE KYABRAM SHOW IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER. Everything from livestock and poultry events, to local handicraft and food stalls, will be available on Saturday, October 16. The horse and dog show events will give local competitors the challenge they’ve been waiting for after last year’s cancelled events. And there’s even something special for the kids with the Master and Miss Showgirl pageants, as well as junior crafts and livestock competition divisions. Crowds won’t be lacking for entertainment, with many sideshows and new entertainers booking in. For the first time, stilt-walker performers Electra Android and the Stilt Police will be attending the event for two exciting performances, and the Scouts will also be running activities and displays for the first time, on top of their usual food stall. Local businesses will be sponsoring the event, with some coming on board for the first time amid the struggles the show society has faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “A lot of new sponsors have come on board,” Kyabram A, H & P Society secretary Janelle McDonald said. “The town has been so supportive and everyone’s saying we need it.” Due to COVID-19 related plans, all tickets for the show — including livestock and general admission — will need to be purchased online prior to the event and shown at entry. Youth team in training to run mad
KYABRAM BLUE LIGHT WILL ENTER A TEAM IN THE ANNUAL ZAIDEE’S MAD COW MUD RUN FOR A THIRD TIME IN 2021, AND THE YOUNG PEOPLE TRAINING HARD AHEAD OF THE BIG DAY ARE BRIMMING WITH EXCITEMENT FOR THE OCTOBER EVENT. Kyabram Blue Light president Mitchell Bull of Victoria Police says a day out on the slippery 9 km obstacle course will be a reward for the effort he has seen the young people in the community put in over the past year. “It’s an experience that’s different than what we can supply in Kyabram, and it aligns with our programs for young people,” he said. Senior Constable Bull said the Kyabram Blue Light team was hoping to beat the number of participants it had in the last run, which was 18, and excitement was “through the roof”. 80

A few specialised training sessions are on the cards to get the team match-fit for the October 2 event, including a lap of Kyabram Fauna Park and a self-devised obstacle course using public exercise equipment in local parks. Senior Constable Bull said the scale of Zaidee’s Mad Cow Mud Run pushed a lot of the youth he mentors out of their comfort zones, and that’s when they find they enjoy themselves the most — they become part of a huge crowd of people all striving to achieve the same thing. Get your groove on in Lockington FEET WILL BE TAPPING AT THE LOCKINGTON COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL, WHICH WILL FEATURE A RANGE OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL TALENT INCLUDING CRAIG GILES, JAMIE NIELSON AND RUPE ADAMS.
The three-day festival will kick off at 7 pm on Friday, October 22 at the Lockington Community Centre in Shakespeare Crescent. Big River Entertainment consultant and event organiser Roz Giles says this year’s festival will be “brilliant”. The festival forms part of Big River Entertainment’s ‘Awareness of Rural Towns’ project, where music events are brought to friendly and welcoming country towns across Victoria, NSW and South Australia to boost awareness and tourism revenue. “It pumps a lot of money into the area,” Roz said. “It’s (also) another outlet for the artists to perform at — it’s a fundraiser for the local area.” She said the presence of tourists shopping and staying in the town was a huge benefit in itself. Meals, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks will be available on-site, with a barbecue after Sunday’s 5 pm finale to wind up the event. An unpowered grassed area for self-contained campervans is available close to the hall, with bed ‘n’ breakfast and local home-style accommodation available in Lockington and surrounding towns. “It’s a musical experience with a very friendly atmosphere, so there’s something for everyone really,” Roz said.
