WELCOME Explore the ins and outs of Echuca-Moama this winter. The year of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic continues, but the good news is the lifeblood of the twin towns — sport and live music — is back. Football returned locally earlier this year when spectators flocked to watch Moama Football Netball Club take on Echuca United in the highly anticipated Three Jacks Cup on Good Friday. But if you missed it, they play again on June 12 in what is one of the most entertaining matches of the Murray Football League. You can read about it on page 30. Or if music is more your thing, the Winter Blues Festival is back to entertain locals and tourists. Our four-page feature starts on page 12. Featuring a range of live music acts at a range of local venues, the annual event is set to entertain young and old and is a fantastic way to support the community.
And after being cancelled last year as a result of COVID-19, it’s set to be bigger and better than ever. But we can’t forget the little things — the family days, the farmers’ markets and popular exhibitions the twin towns have to offer, including the Echuca Historical Society’s maritime exhibition between June 1 and August 28. The roaming Remarkable exhibition features a range of historical stories about Australians and their boats, and you can read about it on page 78. Read more about the Echuca-Moama Rotary Club hosting its annual Family Day on the Queen’s Birthday weekend on page 47. The day will be filled with so much fun for the whole family. There’s all this and more in the latest edition of the wonderful What’s On, so flick through to find something that tickles your fancy.

‘NORMAL’ LIFE IS ON THE WAY City, country re-unite with more freedom soon
By Andrew Johnston VICTORIA is poised to take its single biggest step towards COVID normal in two weeks’ time. Changes were announced on Sunday morning, on the same day the state recorded its ninth consecutive day with no new COVID-19 cases or deaths. From 11.59pm on November 22, life will seem almost nornmal
compared to what Victorians have endured for most of 2020. Hospitality venues are the biggest winners of the final step on the state's road map with up to 100 people allowed indoors under a one person per four-square-metre rule. Outdoor areas will allow up to 200 with a two-square-metre rule. Households will also be allowed to accept more guests, with 10 visitors in each home from any household.
Gyms will be allowed 100 people in groups of 20, while indoor sports can cater to 100 people in groups of 20. Outdoor physical recreation will increase to 500 people in groups of 50, with indoor pools allowing up to 50 people. The accommodation sector will also see increases on numbers allowed, with a cap of 10 from any number of families at hotels and motels. Cinemas will also take a major step,
with up to 100 people allowed grouped in 20 with a four-square-metre density rule. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the state had earned the new changes, but needed to remain cautious for the future. “But there is a fragility to this thing. It is not gone,” he said. “If we let our guard down, it will be back. Today is a day to be optimistic. “No-one can assume that because
we want it to be over, it is over and because we have had nine days of zero, it is gone and somehow those numbers are the same as a vaccine against this deadly virus. They are not.” While these changes will likely come two weeks from now, a number of further changes came into effect this morning which has seen a oncedivided Victoria become whole again. — Continbued page 3

GET YOUR GLOW ON, ECHUCA Are you ready to get your glow on? Rotary Park will become home to a glowing winter wonderland at the inaugural Festival of Lights on June 27. “Come in glowed up, or buy glow items at the Night Gear souvenir tents to take part in best dressed prizes at the end,” event manager Anna Demasi said. “We will have animated LED installations in the theme of four to five metre high African animals — from elephants to gorillas. “All will be placed around the grounds, where there will be roving performers, a fire show, light-up hula hoops, kids’ activities and jumping castles.” For the adults, food trucks, street food and retail stores will offer something for everyone. “It’s really just a fun night out — it’s winter, it gets dark early and you can enjoy an early night 8

of family fun and entertainment,” Ms Demasi said. Capitalising on winter darkness, gates will open at 4.30 pm, with the event kicking off at 5 pm and an immersive light show bringing it home at 8.30 pm. “The entertainment industry has really suffered, so it’s exciting to be able to bring this out with so many people who can benefit from it,” Ms Demasi said. Tickets must be purchased before the event online at, 123tix.com.au/events/17362/ echuca-gets-its-glow-on Tickets are $10 for adults and children over 15, $5 for children five to 15 and free for children under five years old. WINTER BLUES
back for 2021
After taking a hit and cancelling their beloved Winter Blues Festival last year, the organisers are hoping to give the town something new in 2021.
While they may not be trying to come back “bigger and better” this time around, festival organiser Peter Williams said it was about helping the town get back on its feet. “We’re working now to bring something to our weekend in July this year, but it may not be what everyone knows and loves,” he said. 12
WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
“Our team is working with venues and musicians to see what we can do to help each other and hopefully get the event off the ground again.” Now in its 22nd year, Winter Blues started as a way for pubs in the town’s hub to come together and celebrate a new sound — the blues.
And since then, the committee has brought up to 60 bands and individual artists that play their music at more than 20 venues. But as COVID-19 ripped through the events calendar in 2020, for a while organisers could only hope the usual four-day blues fest would go ahead. After announcing its first round of artists who were ready and raring to hit the stage after a dry year, Winter Blues froze and plans crumbled in May last year. “We, as an event, would have lost upwards of $25,000 after we had to cancel last year — and that’s after dipping into our ‘rainy day’ money,” Mr Williams said. “And that’s not including the losses venues and accommodation suffered either. “We know we can’t be doing that every year and if we were to miss it again this year, we’re not sure what we can do from there.”
Despite this, Mr Williams said this was all the more reason to work hard to get the festival back up and running again. “We know how hard a year it was and we know we can’t ask too much of our venues, but we want to keep these conversations going so we can work out a way to bring Winter Blues back in one way, shape or form,” he said. “We’re also hoping to work with the government to see how we can be supported that way too, but it’s all back in the planning stages for now.” The event, which is tentatively set for the weekend of July 23 to 25, could see your favourite local artists back in Echuca-Moama. “While usually we would have more than 60 bands in town for the event, we think we’ve booked in at least 38 for this year,” committee >> secretary Lynne Gillard said. WHAT’S ON Winter 2021
13
>> “Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we’re going to have to contain numbers in each venue, so from May 1, around 2000 tickets will be available. “We will have the option of a day pass, weekend pass and passes to that effect to ensure we keep everything as safe as possible.” Ms Gillard said they would have a few new venues on the list for this year, too. “We will have Capehorn Vineyard and the Gunbower Hotel joining us this year as well as Ludz and Co in Moama,” she said. For more information or to keep updated, you can visit the Winter Blues website at winterblues.com.au This event is subject to COVID-19 restrictions and has the potential to be called off due to changes to these rules and regulations.

SOOTHING SOUNDS
are on the way They say that music can soothe the soul. And after last year, it might be what we all need. Something to relax us, to calm us and bring us back to our centre. In Echuca-Moama, this will come through Sounds for the Soul. A number of outstanding artists will be in Echuca-Moama during the winter period, putting on displays of their best music to help listeners relax after some rough times in the past year. Anne Peace says the opportunity could not come at a better time. “We’ve always felt like music can be an incredible tool in looking after people,” she said. “The expression about music soothing the soul is something we absolutely believe in. It has an impact on you mentally, but it also has an impact on you physically, on how you are feeling in general.” Ms Peace said it was exciting to bring artists back to the community after 2020. “We would have loved nothing more than to have had some great acts in town last year,” she said. “With everything that was going on last year, it would have been perfect for everyone to be able
to spend a night listening to some great music and having the opportunity to spend the night relaxing and just enjoying the music around them. “What we are planning for the next few months is along the lines of what we would have liked to have done last year.” The town will see two music groups in the winter months at the Echuca Moama Uniting Church Hall. “The Savoy Singers will be in town on July 25 with their Music to Make You Smile, they are pretty amazing,” she said. “They do songs from musicals, and the last time we were able to have them in town in 2019 we had a full house for their performance. “They’re a wonderful act that has always proved to be incredibly popular and we expect that we will have a full crowd again. “On August 15 we are hoping to see Juliarna and her quartet playing some great jazz music for the crowd as well. “We have a beautiful venue at the church hall, it suits music very well and will make for a wonderful couple of nights.” WHAT’S ON Winter 2021 19

KY EVENT prepares to tee off Some of the best golfers from across the state will hit the Parkland golf course in Kyabram this winter for the club’s par three championships. It will be an opportunity to see some of the best golf the region has to offer as players from across the state and beyond make their way to Kyabram. Naomi Cartwright said it was exciting to see the event return after the layoff. “It’s great to be back on course,” she said. “We have the women’s event on June 5 and 6, the first time we have seen the event on a weekend instead of during the week as part of golf’s commitment to equality. 22 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
“We then follow it up with the men’s event on June 12 and 13. The women’s comp will see 36 holes played, while the men’s competition will last for 54 holes. “It’s also exciting this year to see the men’s competition recognised as an Ivo Whitten event, while the women’s event will be recognised as a Susie Tolhurst event. It’s huge for those playing in the tournament to know they are being recognised as taking part in a major event.”
Ms Cartwright said it was an exciting opportunity to not only see high quality golf in the region, but also to draw crowds back to the area. “This has historically been a high quality event, with a number of former winners now being recognised as pro golfers,” she said. “We’ve also seen the course record set in this event which shows you the quality of people taking part. “But as well as producing quality golf, it draws the players and their families into the region. Accommodation in not only Kyabram but surrounding areas is booked, which is a big help to the local area. “People bring their families, they go out and have meals and spend time locally. And after they play on our course, they usually come back at other times to play again outside of competition. “We’re really excited to see what this year’s event has to hold.”

CHOICE OF DINING

If you’re looking for a family-friendly dining experience, hotel 1895 The Royal in the heart of Echuca is the place to be this winter. Within walking distance of the CBD, 1895 The Royal’s downstairs bar and bistro has all your favourite classics, while upstairs its Steakhouse offers a more unique dining experience. For three-and-a-half years, 1895 The Royal has been under the ownership of Brandon Harpley and Barry Saunders, with the pair implementing plenty of changes at the venue during their tenure. “We’re not your typical pub — you can come here for a relaxed meal and drink or head upstairs to our Steakhouse,” Mr Harpley said. “We’re always trying to improve the environment for our customers. “We’ve just introduced outside dining, which has gone great this summer, so it’s been really good up to this point.” For more than a year, 1895 The Royal — like so many other venues across the twin towns — has been dealt a tough hand with multiple COVID-19 lockdowns. But as the community continues to re-engage with everyday activities, Mr Harpley said his 24 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
team was excited to welcome patrons back to the venue. “Like most others, we’ve bounced back really well,” he said. “We’re in a good location for tourism, and we can’t thank the locals enough for coming out in huge numbers and supporting us. “It seems people are trying to share their money around, and that support is all we can ask for.” And if you’re after a bit of light entertainment to get you through the winter blues, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for plenty of upcoming music events at 1895 The Royal. “We introduce music acts now and then, and hold an open mic night each fortnight on Thursday,” Mr Harpley said. “We’ll keep that going for as long as everyone wants it.” 1895 The Royal is located at 183 Hare St, Echuca. Opening hours are 11 am until late, Monday to Saturday. For bookings, call 5480 7626.

ON TRACK FOR
winter race meetings We may be heading into the colder months, but there is no doubt about it — the action continues to heat up at Echuca Harness Racing Club. After a successful summer season, an Echuca Harness Racing Club spokesperson said the club was looking forward to continuing that momentum into the winter months. “It went really well, we’re very happy; a number of local trainers were successful, and we had terrific crowds,” they said. Following on from its major events held earlier this year — including spectacular Echuca Pacing Cup and Easter Cup meetings — the club will continue to host its monthly meetings from June through to August. With its track located two kilometres outside Echuca’s CBD at Frank Ryan Raceway, the action is just a hop, skip and a jump away for all those eyeing an action-packed night of racing. Although there is less entertainment on offer for families during the winter months, spectators 26 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
can expect plenty of food and drink, along with a front row seat to all the action — because it’s on-course where many of the racing fraternity’s best and brightest have been producing at an all-time high. Track records at Echuca have continued to be broken this year, with Malcolm’s Rhythms breaking the 2560 m mobile start with a mile rate of 1.57.0 to claim the Echuca Pacing Cup, while Stress Factor took out the 2560 m standing start on the same night with a 2.02.5 mile rate to snatch the Crystal Bucket. This winter, the club will hold night meetings on: Wednesday, June 23; Thursday, July 15; and Tuesday, August 3. Frank Ryan Raceway is located in Simmie St, Echuca. CROWDS TURN OUT AS
footy and netball return It was a triumphant return to the football field and netball courts on Good Friday. For the first time in nearly two years, Moama and Echuca United returned to doing what they love more than anything as the first edition of the Three Jacks Cup was played in front of a packed house at Moama Recreation Reserve. With a huge crowd, and high-quality football and netball played at the new-look venue, both clubs were hailing the day as a major success.
On the day, it was Moama that took the chocolates in both A-grade netball and senior football, as well as taking the trophy home to the brand new trophy case. But why stop there? On June 12 the two clubs will do it all again as the second playing of the Three Jacks Cup for 2021 takes off.

Moama Football and Netball Club president Matt Lake said the first event of the year was an outstanding return of sport. “It was great to be able to see the community come back and be a part of the day,” he said. “It had been a long time waiting for the football and netball to return, so it was big not only for those who were actually playing, but also for the rest of the community to be able to come back and spend the day together at live sport. “It was also a great day for us on the field and on the court as a club. We’ve been focusing on development and growing as a side this season, so to get so many good outcomes across the day was a huge boost. “Hopefully we can see that happen again for the second event. With the June long weekend we’re hoping to get a big crowd again. We know it won’t be as big as Good Friday, but hopefully we get to see as much of the community as we can.” United president Ian Johnson said the club was hoping to see further improvement. “On-field it wasn’t our day,” he said. “But that’s the reality of being a young side. We took a lot of positives out of that day, a lot of lessons on both the court and the field were learned, and we hope to see a lot of improvement for the next game. “Both groups are starting to click together, so we’re hoping for a much improved showing.”

Get away from it all The perfect winter getaway doesn’t require hours of driving or the stress of border closures — it’s right here in Echuca-Moama. Moama on Murray’s Talo Retreat is nestled away from the main resort, in a natural bush clearing where 12 yurts await. Yurts have existed for thousands of years in Central Asia. The portable, circular dwellings traditionally used by nomads have become modernised and are part of the growing trend of glamping.
Made from Australian wool with hardwood floors and outdoor decks, the yurts at Talo Retreat offer cosy, private accommodation just a short walk from Murray River. “You don’t have to travel far but it still feels like you’ve gone a long way, you can get that sense of tranquillity,” resort manager Fiona Raverty said. “When we built the yurts we purposefully didn’t put televisions in because the whole idea is to have a break and switch off.” Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape or somewhere to relax with friends, Talo Retreat is perfect for locals and visitors alike. And the magic of glamping is only amplified in winter. Fall asleep under twinkling stars in a comfortable bed, relax by the firepit and clink glasses in your private spa. Functions co‑ordinator LeShea Westwood said the retreat was popular with couples getting away for a few nights or celebrating special occasions. “People come here because it’s peaceful, quiet and brings you back to nature,” she said. >> WHAT’S ON Winter 2021 33
>> Each yurt has a different colour theme but they all have a kitchenette, ensuite with a shower and toilet, heating and cooling, barbecue and spa. The kitchenettes have coffee machines, mini fridges and access to drinking water. Guests also have access to everything on offer at Moama on Murray resort, including the pool, and can organise complimentary bike and canoe hire. Adding to the tranquillity, Talo Retreat is adults only and cars are parked in a central spot a short walk from the yurts. Trolleys are provided to move belongings. On arrival, guests will find complimentary locally produced cheese and chocolate in their yurts, and have the option to request a grazing box, supplied by Two Tarts Catering Echuca. Prices change depending on the season; average is $220 – $245 per night over a weekend, and $180 – $200 per night midweek. Moama on Murray is located at 69A Dungula Way, Moama NSW. There is a vibe about country pubs that you can’t match in the cities. The quiet surrounds, the friendly locals having a chat and enjoying each other’s company. And when you stop in at Barmah Hotel, that’s what you’ll find, according to publican Matt Gissing. “What I’ve always loved about our pub is that it has a proper country feel to it,” he said. “It’s the vibrant atmosphere, everyone is always welcome and we love to see each other whenever someone stops in.
“We are in a great location on the edge of the river as well and that makes the energy of the hotel even better.” Mr Gissing said everyone was treated like a local at the pub. “We love our community, and we extend that love to everyone who comes through our community,” he said. “And we really love to see new faces coming through, whether they are new to our community or just stopping by for a little while in Barmah, we always want to see people come into the town and spend a bit of time with us.”

Can’t stop the music A small community of musical minds create more than just wonderful acoustic music each month, building connections and friendships along the way. Jigarre Jammin’ sessions have been running for more than a decade, with the aim of encouraging music in a welcoming, inclusive and friendly atmosphere. Organiser Irene Labbett said participants come from all over, bringing their own instruments if they can or borrowing one if they need to. “The sessions are popular and a lot of fun, many enduring friendships and spin-off bands have come out it,” she said.
“Our philosophy is to always share what we know with others … leaders are willing to give guidance on the basics to beginners. “There are many people in the wider community who learned a musical instrument in their youth but have not had the opportunity to play with others.” The music level is kept between simple and intermediate to accommodate for different levels of experience. >>

>> Before COVID-19, the sessions were held in Girgarre Memorial Hall on the fourth Saturday of each month from February to November, with a $2 donation on entry. “The COVID lockdowns of 2020 made us rethink and we ran very successful Zoom sessions from April until November last year with an average of 55 to 60 participants,” Irene said. “The Zoom sessions broadened our participant base as we had people joining in from Gippsland and at times overseas.”
Irene said they’ll continue to run the sessions one way or another, subject to COVID-19 restrictions, until they break for Christmas in November. “We are in constant touch with the relevant authorities to see when and how we can meet face to face again,” she said. RACING TOWARD
the starting gates Winter brings with it two things to Echuca Racing Club. First is a wetter track, one that a number of local trained runners thrive on. The other is a new season of racing. And both are making their way up the inside as you read this. Echuca Racing Club is getting itself ready for its final meetings of a chaotic season, before preparing for a new year to begin in August. ERC general manager Garry Armstrong said it was an exciting time for the club. “It’s always a great few months of racing,” he said.
“The last few months have been a lot better for racing, we’ve been able to welcome crowds back to the course in limited numbers which has been really exciting for us. “The atmosphere at the races when the crowd is there is spectacular, and we’ve really missed it during the COVID lockdown. “Things are going really well now so hopefully we can keep having our crowds or even see them grow further in the next few meetings.” >>

>> Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 18 will be the final meetings of the current season, and may coincide with a heavier track depending on weather. And for many local trainers and runners, that would be a big win. “Speaking to a lot of our trainers, they have some runners who really suit those conditions,” Garry said. “But they’re not alone, we have a lot of runners across the state who absolutely love the wet and really thrive in it, so when we get into winter and the tracks start to get a bit wetter and heavier those runners really start to come to prominence.

“When we get into winter, we hope to draw more runners like that who will come up, especially from the Melbourne area, and take part in our races. “It always makes a difference in terms of your crowd that you have a really high-quality field, and we have seen in the past that when we draw a strong field we produce a really strong day of racing. “And we have the local runners who can thrive, which is perfect as we all love to see a local winner.” The calendar for the 2021–22 season will be available on the Echuca Racing Club website.

After cancelling its annual steam rally back in January, Echuca-Moama Rotary Club has been working hard since then to put together an event in its place. Instead, the Queen’s Birthday weekend will be the date for Rotary’s Family Fun Day. “It’ll be on a much smaller scale,” Rotary president-elect Teresa Carlson said. “There will still be some steamers but it just won’t be what it was. “It’s more about us being seen to be out there and what we are doing for the community.” This year, Echuca-Moama Rotary Club aims to have something there for everyone. While you meander around Rotary Park on Saturday, June 12, you will have the sound of live music and bands filling your ears all day. At the same time, you can take a look at the Echuca Moama Historic Vehicle Display,

FALCON
ready to relaunch A change of ownership has signalled new life for the Falcon Hotel Motel in Kanyapella. Taking over the hotel alongside several family members at the beginning of April, co‑owner John Finn said the team at the Falcon would continue to take baby steps in its resurrection. “It’s quite new, but we’re looking at bringing everyone along with us on the journey,” Mr Finn said. “The experience has offered a massive learning curve; but we have a goal and a vision in mind.” Located 17 km east of Echuca along Murray Valley Highway, the Falcon Hotel Motel is a family-friendly establishment with a focus on “good food, cold beers and a pleasant atmosphere”. Mr Finn said there was a good variety of dishes on the menu. ”Parmigianas, the steaks are exceptional, stirfry, soup of the day, a variety of sweets — all the usual suspects,” he said of chef Peter Neilson’s menu. “It’s a nice pleasant drive out to have a good meal, a cool drink or a coffee.” With open mic nights held on the first and third Sunday of each month, Mr Finn said the hotel would continue to find ways to encourage entertainment and socialisation.
“We’re going to focus on using local talent and musicians to the area,” Mr Finn said. “There is an open fire, you can sit around and have a chat and we’ve got a pool table.” If you’re looking to make a trip out of it, the hotel has affordable accommodation on site, while a function room is also available for hire. “We have five triple rooms for $99 a night — and that includes a continental breakfast,” Mr Finn said. The team will also look to host an event in July to relaunch the hotel. Falcon Hotel Motel is open from 11.30 am to 10 pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Phone 5859 2304 for bookings.

Looking for the finest produce from across the district? Then look no further than Echuca Farmers’ Market. Held on the first and third Saturday of every month at Echuca’s Aquatic Reserve, behind the Echuca-Moama Visitor Information Centre, the market offers the chance to buy from local growers. As the seasons come and go, so do the offerings — making each visit a great opportunity to see what’s in season. Market manager Frank Coonerty said there was more than just fruit and vegetables available for purchase. “We’re excited to offer something for everyone who wishes to visit the market,” he said. “The committee runs a breakfast and coffee van, so people won’t be missing out. “Everyone is also welcome to bring their pets down for the morning as well. If the weather allows it is a perfect place to start your day with a picnic. “And the best part is, there is plenty of parking for everyone.” Sarah Crossman from Torrumbarry’s Crossies ‘Cados said winter was one of the best times to visit the market. “We have all our citrus — mandarins, oranges, limes and lemons — to complement the avocados,” she said. After a short break, Crossies ‘Cados returns to the market in June with Bacon and Rincon avocado varieties. Many stallholders’ products and produce will change depending on the season, while some will have the same goods that market-goers know and love. The market is accredited with the Victorian Farmers’ Markets Association and runs from 8 am to noon.

FROM A WEDDING TO DRINKS OR DINNER,
The Mill can do it all
Rustic and classy, The Mill is a versatile space offering a beautiful venue for a wedding or function or for a few cocktails with friends. The five-storey brick building was built in 1881 to house Echuca’s flour mill, and owners Gavin and Melissa Cole have kept much of the charm of the building in their 11 years as owners. A recent addition to The Mill is the upstairs function room — a different option to renting out the entire space — with an exclusive bar, music, projector and bathrooms. With a number of packages available, it suits corporate functions as well as special occasions such as a birthday or engagement parties. Downstairs the main restaurant, bar and lounge is spacious with an industrial feel from the exposed brick, rafter ceilings and brass light fixtures complemented by chandeliers, comfy couches and fairy lights. Ms Cole said The Mill was popular for Friday
night drinks with a cheese platter, sit-down dining and its wide range of cocktails. The menu offers gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and dairy-free options, catering for anyone’s requirements. Ms Cole said the menu ranged from Asianstyle, such as Vietnamese, through to modern Australian cuisine. Another space available is the balcony, which is available for regular dining-in but can also be booked for groups of about 30 to 40 people. Keeping an eye on The Mill’s social media pages will pay off, with live music events and theme nights popping up in the calendar. AIMING FOR MOAMA The best of the best in the art of the bullseye will descend upon Moama in August to vie for this year’s Australian Darts Championships. Though the Australian Open — featuring domestic and international talent — is unlikely to be held in Moama in 2021 due to restrictions on international travel, Darts Australia board director Judy Taylor said the Australian Championships was still able to return to Moama this year. Held at Rich River Golf Club, the championships will also utilise Moama Bowling
Club — where the Australian Open is typically held — for its presentations. With players having little opportunity to compete in the past 18 months due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ms Taylor said everyone in the darts community was eager for competitions to return. “All the states are well and truly behind us,” Ms Taylor said.

“Some of the states that have restarted have actually got back a lot of members who had given up playing, so I think it will be good — people are champing at the bit to get back out there again. “We’re working with the Moama council again, which has been a really good experience for us. “We’re happy to be coming back.” Starting on Sunday, August 1 will be the Pacific Masters, where anyone registered with Darts Australia can enter. Then on Monday, August 2, the Australian Darts Championships will get under way, with the top players from each state travelling to Moama to compete. A team competition, players will battle it out in a series of singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. With some states utilising online competitions throughout the COVID-19 lockdowns, Ms Taylor
said it had been fantastic to get back to inperson competition. “Online is quite good, but it’s not the same as mixing and enjoying the company of other friends,” she said. “There is a big camaraderie in darts.”

We even have a chook auction which really is a sight to see. “It started off being ‘Make it, Bake it, Grow it’ and it’s all just developed from that.” And while COVID-19 put the event on hold, Ms Smith said it was sorely missed. “It was like missing your birthday,” she said. “But it gave us time to evaluate and see how we could run the market better, so ultimately we came out of lockdown undamaged and ready to get things back off the ground.” And if that isn’t enticing enough, funds raised at the market go back into the community. “We’ve been able to finance a lot of different projects such as the community car, botanical gardens and other upgrades around town,” Ms Smith said. Even with all the changes, the team wants to make sure the social side of the market remains.
60 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
“We still want people to feel as though they can come and spend time out of the house and catch up with people they may not have seen in a long time,” Ms Smith said. “It’s very enjoyable and we hope the locals and people coming from other places feel the same.” The market runs in Station St, Girgarre, from 8.30 am until noon.
GREAT MUSIC
on the agenda
Rock Agenda’s gigs at Shamrock Hotel Echuca are fast becoming must-attend events on Echuca-Moama’s social calendar, with the performances attracting people young and old.
Covering all the greatest hits from the 1970s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, Rock Agenda gets the crowd on their feet, singing and dancing the night away. Hailing from all over Melbourne, the band’s members first got together in 2015 through a meeting website for musicians and debuted on stage in August 2016. Their sound started as classic rock before adding some funk into the mix and now incorporating country music, giving their repertoire depth and something for everyone. Keeping the beat going on the drums, Bruno Volpe said the band “always look forward to going to the Shamrock”. “The younger generation, older generation, they’re just fantastic,” he said. “They come up to us afterwards, introduce themselves and give us good feedback. “Even the families — the little kids get into it,” he said. After a few changes to the line-up over past years, Bruno said the six band members were a “pretty tight group”. “We’re high-energy and we like to get the crowd involved and try to celebrate any birthdays out there,” he said.
Leading from the front are singers Leesa and Richard, there’s Dennis on lead guitar, Andrew and Michael on bass and rhythm guitar respectively and Bruno on drums. Shamrock Hotel Echuca general manager Dave Walker said the band brings “the whole package”. “Having two lead singers, male and female, really provides depth and they’re surrounded by great supporting musicians,” he said. “They play with great energy and we normally get booked out for dinner on the nights they play. “We’ve made a real commitment to live music — putting new lights in and extending the stage, and I think bands have seen that commitment and are responding to it.” Rock Agenda’s first gig at the Shamrock in Echuca was in March 2020, just before Australia went into COVID-19 lockdown. “A big thankyou to Dave Walker,” Bruno said. “He does a lot for live music, especially at the Shamrock with what he’s done there with the stage, lights and smoke machines — he’s made it a place to be on a Friday and Saturday night.” Rock Agenda will take the stage at the Shamrock Hotel Echuca, 579 High St, from 8 pm on Saturday, June 19. PUB ALL ABOUT having a good time
Echuca’s Shamrock Hotel is fast establishing itself as the twin towns’ premier live music venue. With a recently renovated stage featuring smoke machines and new lights in the spacious beer garden, musicians and bands are lining up to get a gig. In February 2021, Melbourne duo Sam Sam but Different performed a sold-out show in front of 250 people at the Shamrock, which was livestreamed to more than 30,000 people. The large beer garden is great for a relaxing lunch in the sun, afternoon drinks or, as night falls, the chance to dance to great live music and entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. “We really do embrace that, from big bands like Rock Agenda and RollerToaster, to solo artists or duos,” general manager Dave Walker said. “COVID-19 really affected the musicians a lot and we’re conscious of that as well.” Creating a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere is important to the Shamrock — even accommodating your four-legged friends. “It’s an Irish pub so it’s about coming in, having a good time, a good feed and happiness,” Mr Walker said. In 2020, the Shamrock was named Echuca Moama Beer and Beef Restaurant of the Year, and 62 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
you can’t go without mentioning its 101 parmas menu — something Mr Walker said was iconic to the pub. With options from the ‘Cheesy Mite’ with vegemite and cheese; or the ‘St Pat’s’, with potato mash, bacon, butter-wilted cabbage, garden peas, cheese and gravy — there really is something for everyone. If parmas aren’t your thing, there’s also a great range of pub food and desserts for lunch and dinner. For larger special events the ‘Underground’ function space can be booked, or in the beer garden the ‘Vineyard’ makes a great spot to reserve a few tables. Accommodation is also on offer with two-person rooms upstairs from the pub, or a renovated house can be booked for groups of up to 16 people. With a goal to be the best regional Irish pub in Australia, there’s great things happening at the Shamrock Hotel Echuca, and many more to come.

PUTTING LIVE MUSIC
on the map
Named after the Echuca postcode, the public Facebook group 3564 Music has grown to be larger than ever after an increased demand for live music in 2021 — now boasting 1500 members and growing as locals and tourists alike look to support local music in the twin towns and surrounds.
Created as a place for local musicians to connect with local venues and private events and promote the live music industry, current group administrator Miriam Ramage said it was a great way to highlight the musicians and the venues after a tough year. “I became involved when Mark Peterson (the page’s previous manager) asked for help one day, and then he asked if I could take over as the group administrator and it sort of went from there,” she said. As a graphic designer and marketer by trade, Mrs Ramage said live music had always interested her. “I was in cover bands from the age of 16 until my mid 20s and came from a musical family,” she said. “I have become involved in music again in recent years due to my sons being performers.” The Facebook group 3564 Music publishes a weekly gig guide announcing all the live music performances for that weekend within an hour’s drive of Echuca-Moama, with the information supplied by either the musician or the venue. “Generally, on a Monday I put a call out for the details of the guide, which is published around 5 pm on Wednesday,” Mrs Ramage said. “Either the artists or the venues give their info for the upcoming weekend. “It’s just a way to highlight the musicians and the venues welcoming live music.” The success of the page has smaller neighbouring towns showing interest and
Mrs Ramage has even received requests all the way from Melbourne. However, she emphasised the group only allowed live music gigs into the guide, from smaller towns within one hour’s drive of Echuca Moama (not including larger towns such as Bendigo and Shepparton). “Live music is in such high demand, it’s more prominent since COVID-19,” she said. Often likened to Missy Higgins in sound, Jess began writing her own songs as soon as she could play a few chords on the guitar and is now a full-time singer, songwriter and cover artist performing at venues, festivals, weddings and events Australia-wide. Jess is known for her raw and captivating vocals, unique cover arrangements and her multi-instrumental shows including acoustic and electric guitars, ukulele and live looping. “I’m really drawn to lyrics and vocal performance in a song,” she said. “My favourite artists express so much emotion in catchy, down-to-earth ways while at the same time kind of breaking your heart, or lifting it up. “There’s such an art to that but I think it comes down to being extremely honest and true to yourself in your songwriting and performance.” Facebook @JessicaLorraineMusic Instagram @JessicaLorraineMusic Email jessicalorrainemusic@gmail.com Website jessicalorrainemusic.com

By Andrew Johnston ECHUCA-MOAMA’S tourism sector has celebrated a strong Easter weekend. Accommodation and attractions reported massive numbers of bookings, with the town on the verge of bursting. Echuca-Moama Accommodation Association co-president Paul Lavars said providers had run out of room. “There were calls being frantically made to towns like Rochester and Kyabram because there was simply nowhere to stay,” he said. “It's an ideal situation for everyone — the rooms in our town were packed, those who have been suffering in recent months are getting that business back. “But the spillover meant those in our surrounding towns, in the spokes
of the wheel, were also getting business come in. “We couldn't be happier about the impact it had on our community.” Murray River Paddlesteamers director Rohan Burgess said his business had been close to being booked solid. “Our pre-bookings were fantastic,” he said. “There was a little bit of space during the week, but Easter itself had been almost completely booked out. “We saw really good numbers of domestic tourists. People who may have gone overseas or on a different holiday and can't now were coming here instead. “It's great news for all of us. We are really excited to be welcoming people back to the town and showing them what the attractions in town have to offer.” — Continued page 2

With a (still growing) total of $83,105 raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital, the twin towns ranked third in regional Victoria, behind Wangaratta ($96,518) and Ballarat ($123,231).
It’s nearly double what was raised last year when COVID-19 restrictions dampened the day’s usual activities. It was a joint effort between Echuca Lions Club, Echuca Fire Brigade, Echuca Village and Bamawm Extension CFA, SES, Kiwanis, Moama Fire and Rescue, Moama RFS, Echuca-Moama Search and Rescue and local stores. Echuca CFA captain Rob Amos
said the brigade had five vehicles out on the day making their way through town. “It was really good to be back out; obviously we didn’t do it last year, which was disappointing for everyone,” he said. “It was fantastic and people were very generous, we felt very blessed.” Locals and tourists alike helped the cause, with the CFA going
through the holiday parks and along the river to the campers on the day. The Moama branch of Fire and Rescue NSW raised $6123, with four firefighters in their truck dropping into the holiday parks and resorts on the other side of the Murray River. “It’s as good as we’ve done and with only a small group it was a pretty good effort,” captain Toby Teasdale said. ■ Continued page 2

It marked the start of Phase 1b of Australia’s vaccine rollout, with the AstraZeneca vaccine delivered to about 1000 GP clinics across Australia. A REMARKABLE
exhibition
The Echuca Historical Society will host the maritime exhibition, Remarkable — Stories of Australians and their boats, presented by the Australian Maritime Museum Council and the Australian National Maritime Museum, from June 1 to August 28. With more than 1000 rivers and a coast that stretches for more than 36,000 kilometres, it is no surprise Australia abounds with stories of people who have lived and worked on water. Remarkable provides an opportunity for regional audiences to hear some of those national and local stories. A result of a national project assisted by the Federal Government’s Vision of Australia program, the exhibition serves to highlight the local stories of small communities that may be unknown to wider audiences, undertaken to create opportunities for community outreach and collaboration across Australian maritime cultural institutions. “After a period of drought, bushfire, COVID-19 and floods, the chance for regional 78 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
communities to enhance a national exhibition with their own content is a great opportunity for outreach and community development,” Australian National Maritime Museum director and chief executive Kevin Sumption said. Thirty-four stories were nominated by maritime museums and heritage institutions around Australia, with 12 of the most compelling selected to feature in the exhibition. The Echuca Historical Society will also feature several local items and boats of interest during the exhibition’s stay. Stop by the Echuca Historical Society at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, and check the exhibition out.

MARKET RETURNS
to Rochester Variety and local products are what Rochester town market has to offer this month. After 12 months off due to COVID-19 restrictions, the market has bounced back — giving local producers a platform to show what they can offer. Held on the fourth Saturday of each month (except December), the market sees providers from the Rochester region sell quality products from produce to crafts and upcycled goods. 80 WHAT'S ON Winter 2021
Rochester Community House co‑ordinator Amanda Logie said there were lots of reasons to visit the market. “Because it’s a Saturday morning, not only are you getting the variety of stalls at the market, you’ve got all the shops in town,” she said.
“You can go for a walk and look at the silos, go to the bakery and stop in at specialist stores in town.” Rochester Lions Club puts on a barbecue each month and you can often find local coffee vendors on site too. Ms Logie said COVID-19 restrictions last year had affected the market’s stallholders, who couldn’t sell their goods at markets for most of 2020. “A few stallholders started to sell online but there was also a huge amount who didn’t, and they’re really keen to get back out there and have people walking around,” she said. “We had a quite a big crowd at our February market throughout the day, it was quite busy, so that was really good.” The Rochester Town Market is on June 26, held in the shire hall and skate park area at 45 Mackay St. The monthly markets run from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm, except for the twilight market in December, which will be held on Friday, December 10 from 4.30 pm. The owner of the pub since the mid-2000s, Mr McGillivray said the venue was benefiting from local tourism after a slower year. “There are a lot of people coming through our community,” he said. “And that’s exciting for us because we want to be there for those people. We want to give them a great meal and have them enjoy the atmosphere around the area when they are here. “We love our community and we want to show the visitors to our town what this community has to offer.”
