History and hospitality collide
In Berrigan you’ll be treated to country hospitality at its finest.
Stop off for a coffee, lunch or a sweet treat at one of the boutique eateries in town, before taking a gentle wander along Chanter Street where you’ll find an eclectic collection of new and second-hand clothes, books, bric-a-brac, treasures, arts, crafts and photography.
While you’re there, be sure to take some time to read the interpretive plaques that reveal the heritage highlights of our town, including the old post office building, Federal Hotel and Memorial Hall.
Berrigan lays claim to the first rural fire service in Australia, and today the community continues to thrive on that same spirit of volunteering.
Learn more about it at Berrigan & District Heritage Museum, where local oral histories, Federation information, fire brigade memorabilia and material relating to the Berrigan RSL - including guns, medals and uniforms - are important features.
The service records of Berrigan men and women who served in World War II, plus some from World War I, are also housed here.
There is an extensive collection of photos and press cuttings of early farming and the coming of irrigation in 1939 via the Mulwala Canal, as well as materials relating to the Berrigan schools – some that have been closed for many years.
The museum can also provide you with a heritage town walk brochure, which will take you to main street buildings and corresponding wall plaques.
Berrigan and District Heritage Museum is managed by a committee of volunteers and can be found at 60 Jerilderie St, Berrigan. It is open on Wednesdays from 9am - 11am and at other times by appointment.
Aiming to display the rich aviation heritage of Tocumwal, the airshow will be over four hours of airborne entertainment, perfect for plane lovers, World War II enthusiasts and the whole family.
On Sunday, September 17, visitors can catch amazing stunts and aerobatics, performed by some of Australia’s most skilled champion pilots.
