WHAT'S ON - Summer-Autumn 2015
Welcome! Summer is without a doubt my favourite time of year. It’s the season for waterskiing, wine-drinking and attending some of our region’s best summer events (though obviously not all at once).
put Echuca-Moama back on the map as a foodies’ destination. For those seeking a taste of entertainment in our district towns, there’s a smorgasbord of events on offer.
As always, it will be an action-packed few months for visitors to the Echuca-Moama region.
Such as the Mathoura Fishing Classic, Elmore Summer Send Off ball, Rochester Mural Festival and Kyabram Vintage Rally to name a few.
The river is always a top spot for tourists and locals, and will again play host to the world’s largest ski race — the Southern 80 — which is always a highlight.
Easter will see another huge gathering of visitors with a range of Easter services and Easter celebrations around the district.
Not much can beat the electric atmosphere at the finish line when a boat roars past, cheered on by thousands of fans.
But without a doubt one of the biggest events this year will be the centenary of the Anzac landings at Gallipolli. Thousands of people will be involved in remembering this historic event that has shaped our country.
Details of activities in this What’s On are correct at time of printing but may be subject to change.
February gets even better when the Riverboats Music Festival lights up the Aquatic Reserve in Echuca – and this year acts including Sarah Blasko and the Ariawinning Dan Sultan will prove major drawcards.

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 12-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria ,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish & chips. Fish in a Flash uses only Australian fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The oyster bar is now a burgeoning part of the business, with oysters available, natural or Kilpatrick, as well as in fritters. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

ELMORE SUMMER SEND OFF
B&S Ball C&W AT THE B&S IS AN OK WAY TO SPEND THE WEEKEND Crack your whips, stack the esky, crank up the country music, roll up your swag and head to the Elmore Summer Send Off B&S Ball. Now in its 11th year, country music artists The Brook Chivell and The Jade Martin Band will kick off the entertainment at the Elmore Events Centre on March 7. This year will be one to remember with the ball fast becoming a must-attend on the B&S Circuit, attracting crowds from all over Australia. ‘‘It’s an event like no other — we harness country spirit for a night of fun — and it’s for a good cause,” organiser Sam Shotton said. ‘‘Where else can you have a fantastic night out like this?’’ A 1500-strong crowd attended last year, with organisers expecting similar numbers this year.
Following the 2014 Elmore B&S, donations to the local community topped $40,000 which was used for driver education training and benefitted Rochester Secondary College, sporting groups, schools and preschools in Elmore and Rochester. So it’s worth heading along — there will be plenty of music to keep the crowds entertained while the ball raises funds. Gates open at 1pm, car park entertainment from 3pm and the ball starts at 8pm. The black tie event is open to people aged 18 and older. Tickets are $120 at the gate. Tickets include Sunday breakfast, drinks and entertainment. www.elmoresummersendoff.org.au

things to see & do
Perricoota Station READY TO TURN IT ON WITH 2015 MUSIC FESTIVAL PERRICOOTA STATION IS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE. As you would expect with its second annual music festival getting closer, this year’s event is set down for Saturday March 7 – during the long weekend. And no expense has been spared in securing some class acts for the occasion. Owner Mark Evans said the headliners for the 2015 festival are the key members from four of Australia’s biggest bands in the 1980s. Scott Cameron from Kids in the Kitchen, Brian Mannix of Uncanny X-men, Ally Fowler from the Chantoozies and Sean Kelly from The Models. Mark said the main acts will come out as the sun goes down, taking centre stage in front of the 154-yearold homestead, its manicured lawns spreading out to cater for the crowds, their picnic rugs and seats. “The main acts will go on individually and perform their greatest hits but will also work together, backing each
other up, making it sort of a super jam session,” Mark said. “Our first festival last year did really well for a new event in the neighbourhood, with more than 800 turning up for the show,” he said. “This year we will be running acts on the homestead stage and also in The Packing Shed. We can comfortably cater for 1500 people on the day and still make sure there is a relaxed atmosphere and everyone has a good view. “It is a big weekend to be in town because the next day is the running of the Echuca Cup so come for the show and stay for the biggest race event of the year on the local calendar – make a real event of the long weekend.” Apart from the headline performers Mark said Perricoota Station has also booked a string of local acts and is expecting to sign the Royce Twins from the X Factor. He is hopeful some other X Factor performers will make the show.
The music will start around 2pm at both venues, letting people pick and choose who they want to see, and when.
be running every 30 minutes and will only close down when everyone is gone for the night,” he said.
There will be wake board and skiing demonstrations at the station’s beach, which nestles between the Homestead and The Packing Shed. They will be run every 40-45 minutes throughout the day.
“There will be plenty of parking and we have set it up much closer than last year so access to the venues will be much easier.
The lawn between the venues will also be home to activities for children, from a bouncy castle to face painting. “We are also planning to have a barbecue on the lawn and there will be food available in The Packing Shed,” Mark added. “There will be bars at both the Homestead and The Packing Shed as well and to make it a complete – and safe day – we will have security operating from go to whoa. “There will be a shuttle bus with pickups at High Street in Echuca and at the soundshell in Moama. The bus will
“We will also have landing space for anyone who wants to cruise out to the show in their boat. “Everyone attending should remember March in Echuca still means warm weather so people should have hats and sunscreen – we will have plenty of water and other drinks available.” So for a good day out with some of the region’s famous water sports and a spectacular music festival all rolled into one, get out to Perricoota Station for its 2015 music festival. ANZAC DAY SERVICES AROUND THE REGION WILL BE MORE POIGNANT THAN EVER ON APRIL 25 AS PEOPLE COME TOGETHER TO COMMEMORATE 100 YEARS SINCE THE ANZACS LANDED AT GALLIPOLI. Moama RSL spokesman Garry Armstrong said the centenary is extremely significant for everyone.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning…
“100 years ago on the shores of Gallipoli is where the ANZAC Spirit was formed. At Gallipoli, there was no discrimination, intolerance or prejudice; our soldiers formed a unique bond, this is now known as the spirit of the ANZAC. It’s this ANZAC Spirit that has provided the foundations of who we are and what we stand for as a nation.”

Weddings Expo THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO SAY ‘I DO’ THAN IN ECHUCA-MOAMA Echuca-Moama is one of Australia’s premier wedding destinations, set amongst towering red gums and on the banks of the magnificent Murray River.
Mrs Luscombe said with more than 300 weddings a year in the Echuca-Moama region, it was important for couples to get in early.
The Echuca-Moama Weddings Expo is a one-stop shop for any couple planning their big day.
‘‘Echuca-Moama is one of the most popular wedding destinations with some of the best suppliers you can find,” she said.
For all things wedding related — be it bridal fashion, celebrants, photography, cakes, hair, make-up, entertainment, venues, florists and more — don’t miss the Echuca-Moama Weddings Expo. ‘‘There’ll be lots to see, plenty of new ideas and you can book a supplier on the day,’’ organiser Tracy Luscombe said. ‘‘There’ll be the whole lot under one roof.’’ Last year’s expo was a sell-out success with more than 800 people flocking to the event, and this year is expected to be bigger and better.
34
“This region is also a top spot for holidays which allows people to the most of the mighty Murray River.’’ Tickets to the expo can be purchased on the day, adults $15 and children under 14 free. Contact 0417 059 949 for more information. www.echucamoamaweddingexpo.com.au

ECHUCA-MOAMA – IT HAS A FLAVOUR ALL OF ITS OWN Sample quality local fare from around the region and indulge in a tipple of wine as part of the first ever Flavours of Echuca-Moama Festival. Foodies get ready — a showcase of food and wine delights will descend on Morrison’s Winery on May 17. ‘‘We’ll be displaying a range of local wineries,’’ organiser Trent Eacott said. ‘‘We’ll also have grazing and tasting platters, takeaway wines and tastings onsite.’’ Local Indigenous students will provide a demonstration of camp oven cooking and bush food. For those wanting the full experience, they can jump aboard the PS Pevensey which will ferry festival-goers between the port and Morrisons Winery on the day. Food and wine will be available on

the boat. ‘‘Since the Jazz Food and Wine Festival took a new direction, we felt small producers in the region didn’t have a chance to display their goods,’’ Mr Eacott said. ‘‘Our focus is on everything local. We need to revitalise the image of Echuca-Moama as a food and wine destination.’’ The day before the festival, try the craft beer tastings at Moama Bowling Club’s Junction or head along to a local food and wine dinner at one of
three venues – The American Hotel, Ceres or The Pavilion Bar. Go to www.stickytickets.com.au or pick up festival tickets from St Anne’s Winery cellar door, Morrisons Winery, Merool on the Murray or Shady River Holiday Park. Early bird tickets $15 or at the gate $20 and includes a wine glass and festival program. PS Pevensey tickets are $10 each way.

It’s Run for Ryder in 2015
imagine celebrating
AFTER THIS YEAR’S HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL RUNFORWAYNE, ORGANISERS REBEKAH FRANTZ AND LINDY LEYONHJELM HAVE ANNOUNCED THE EVENT WILL CONTINUE IN 2015. Held on March 22, this year will be in support of Ryder Patrick Colless, a local three-year-old diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a rare disease leading to bone swelling and painful skin rashes.
Wayne was a long-term member at the gym and had often discussed a fun run with Ms Frantz.
This year’s run raised money and awareness for the treatment of Lindy’s partner Wayne Rickard, who has since died from oesophageal cancer.
‘‘Not only did more people turn up than we would have ever expected, the emotion on the day was amazing,’’ she wrote.
Ms Frantz explained they wanted to harness the goodwill of the people of Echuca for a new, but similar, cause.
‘‘What an amazing bunch of people we had behind us, it helps make the terrible times better knowing so many people are with us.’’
‘‘We want to encourage people to come along and support another person — a little boy — facing that same challenge,’’ she said. ‘‘The RunforWayne will be an annual event always done in Wayne’s honour.’’ The 2014 event benefited Wayne enormously, and Ms Frantz thought it a great example of a community doing its part for some of its own. ‘‘It wasn’t competitive, it was just a lot of people coming together to support Wayne,’’ she said. ‘‘The funds went to support Wayne and his family, and to pay for his cancer treatment.’’ The original idea came from Wayne’s gym workout group.
Lindy and her family were also incredibly grateful for the support shown by participants this year.

Wayne’s partner Lindy explained why she chose Ryder, the son of a friend she’d known for many years. ‘‘Ryder has so much to live for and I will do anything to help him be around his family for many years to come,’’ she wrote in a letter to the RunforWayne community. ‘‘The lives of the Colless and Ellis families have been changed forever, but my wish is Ryder lives to fulfil all of his parents’ dreams and more.”
