The carnival starts in Gunbower

THE GUNBOWER RACING CLUB HAS ITS SIGHTS SET FIRMLY ON THE 2022 MOAMA BOWLING CLUB GUNBOWER GOLD CUP AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS, KICK-STARTING THE SPRING RACING CARNIVAL ON OCTOBER 1.

Gunbower’s annual cup meeting welcomes back punters from across the country to participate in its iconic event, which is set to be bigger and better than before. The volunteer-run event will feature seven races with an additional one being anticipated. Gunbower Racing Club president Michael Farrant said the committee was looking forward to racing again and is “geared up, ready to go”. Moama Bowling Club has been announced as this year’s major sponsor as the two local organisations collaborate for the first time. “We’re absolutely ecstatic about the fact that we’ve got Moama Bowling Club coming on board as a major cup sponsor this year,” Michael said. “The Moama Bowling Club is such a driver of community events, they seem to get behind every major event in the community, big and small.” Michael said there was something for everyone at the Gunbower Cup, with fashions on the field and corporate marquees being crowd favourites. This year’s pavilion will be transformed into the Art Gallery Café, featuring a display of work from local artists Kevin Williams, Abby Smith and Rebecca Well, with a two-course meal available. Live music will feature in between races, as well as plenty of food, drinks and kids’ activities to keep everyone’s spirits high. “There’s something for everyone at cup day,” Michael said. “The money we make goes back into the community; we give as much back to the local community organisations as much as we can.” Tickets can be purchased via

TONGALA’S SECOND EVER BEERSHEBA ROD, CUSTOM AND CLASSIC CAR AND BIKE SHOW IS BACK AFTER A FOURYEAR HIATUS.

The show will bring some of the region’s best custom and classic cars to Tongala on Sunday, October 23 for a day that will not want to be missed by anyone. Because of COVID-19, the organisers had to postpone and eventually cancel their planned 2020 show, but they have focused all their energy into making this year even better than their inaugural 2018 event. “We’re very happy to have the show back,” Tongala Cruiser’s Club committee member John Bentley said. “We want to put on a great show for the entire community, and hopefully support some of the local clubs in the area.” In 2018, the show had more than 300 cars and motorbikes take part, raising more than $3500 for the community, and John hopes this year they can better it. “It’s hard to know what the turnout will be this year, but we are hopeful that we can do just as well, or maybe a bit better,” he said. The event will have catered food, live music and a raffle, as well as the car show, to ensure every visitor enjoys the day. There is a gold coin entry fee for visitors, and those wishing to show their car will be charged $10, and $5 for a bike. All the proceeds of the show will go to local clubs. The show will be held at Shire Lawns, Henderson Rd, Tongala from midday to 6 pm.

Muster mixes utes and music

FROM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 TO SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, THE DENI UTE MUSTER WILL DELIGHT VISITORS OF ALL AGES WITH TWO NIGHT-TIME CONCERTS FEATURING AUSTRALIA’S BEST COUNTRY AND ROCK MUSICIANS.

In existence since 1999, the muster attracts about 20,000 people to Deniliquin to celebrate all things Australian and the icon of the ute. Deniliquin was chosen for its agricultural and farming roots and the magnificent Riverina plains nearby as a background for this fun celebration. It wouldn’t be possible without the amazing community of volunteers the festival organisers can rely on. More than 1000 volunteers mobilise each year to help put on the muster and after each event, close to $100,000 is donated back to community groups. This year’s festival line-up is an absolute marvel for music lovers. The line-up includes: Shannon Noll, Brad Paisley, Jessica Mauboy, John Williamson, The Angels, Busby Marou, Ian Moss and Troy Cassar-Daley, Sara Storer, Felicity Urquhart and Josh Cunningham, Shane Nicholson, Round Mountain Girls, Hurricane Fall and Darlinghurst. Over the muster weekend, more than $6 million is spent within the region by the festival visitors. On-site, visitors can enjoy the reserved camping area, as well as the general camping area and can even rent a tent. Tickets are selling fast, so make sure you get one by going on the festival’s website: www.deniutemuster.com.au

ONE OF VICTORIA’S LARGEST CAR EVENTS IS BACK FOR ITS 30TH YEAR.

The Lake Mulwala Rod Run will be held from November 4 to 6, promising attendees a chance to see some of the best hot rods in Australia. It will be the eighth year the event has taken place in Yarrawonga, with it being previously held in Bright for more than two decades. “There are going to be some amazing rods for everyone to see, and there will other activities and entertainment to make sure everyone has a great time,” Northern Suburbs Street Rods member Wayne Sartori said. “We’re going to have live music, a sausage sizzle — and the rods of course.” This year, the Lake Mulwala Rod Run will be accompanied by a farmers’ market on the foreshore, with goods and treats available. Wayne said “we’re really thankful” Moira Shire Council had decided to hold a farmers’ market on the same weekend as the rod run. “It means there is going to be so much more to do for those visiting.” A gold coin on entry will be required for the rod run, with the money going to the cost of holding the event. “We really hope people come down and get involved because the atmosphere is always amazing,” Wayne said. “Sadly, there aren’t many events like these today, so we encourage people to make the most of it.”

Show up and shine at Finley

AFTER A THREE-YEAR HIATUS, THE FINLEY SHOW AND SHINE SWAP MEET RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 25.

The normally annual show, which draws up to 600 people, will be held at the Finley Showgrounds and start at 7 am. Daryl Culhane, who is one of the main organisers of the event, said people came to Finley for the show from as far away as Ballarat. “People have come from everywhere, and there were about 150 cars at our last event with all types of models on display,” he said. “They range from modern cars through to Model As, Model Ts, old Austins and 60s American cars, which are popular with the crowds.” Daryl said he expected this year’s show would be a record turnout. “We are seeing greater crowds at show and shine meets across the country as people want to get back out and show their cars.” He said it was a family friendly car rally that was focused on the cars. “There will be a local band playing, but basically we focus on the cars and the people.” Some food and coffee vans will be at the show. Money raised on the day will go to local volunteer organisations such as the CFA.

Festival of motors and music

BRING YOUR UNIQUE TRUCKS, BIKES AND CARS TO THE INAUGURAL MOTOR MUSIC FESTIVAL AT THE EXCHANGE HOTEL KERANG IN OCTOBER.

Australia’s best trucks, bikes and cars will be on display at this show and shine, combined with a music festival. People are welcome to bring any make, model or age of vehicle to join this family friendly event at the Exchange Hotel Kerang on Saturday, October 8. There will be live music from late afternoon into the night, family entertainment starting from 11 am, and coffee and food flowing from the hotel all day and night. Limited accommodation is available at the hotel, however, a shuttle will run to and from the caravan parks in Kerang to assist with getting to and from the festival.

Country music line-up locked in

YOU CAN EXPECT THE LOCKINGTON COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL TO BE ROCKING THIS OCTOBER AFTER TWO YEARS OF FORCED HIBERNATION DUE TO COVID-19.

After being cancelled in 2020 and 2021, the festival is back with a show bursting with talent over three days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 21, 22 and 23. Originally the Echuca Country Music Festival, it has been held in Lockington since 2017 and features a variety of entertainment, from country to rock’n’roll and rockabilly. “We try and vary every day, we try and make every day a little bit different,” organiser Roz Giles said. “We have the dance party on Friday, so if you want to dance then that’s the chance because that’s when you have the biggest dance floor. “On Sunday we start with a gospel hour from 10.30 to 11.30 and then continue on with a variety of music after that.” Roz’s production company, Big River Entertainment, promotes the all-indoor festival as an awareness of rural towns project. “It’s all about bringing awareness to country towns and injecting as many funds into the town as possible,” she said. The event is held at the Lockington Community Centre, a little over 30 km south-west of Echuca. The line-up includes: Craig Giles, Kinta, Wayne Horsburgh, Grant Luhrs, Kerran Keats, Jamie Nielson, Rupe Adams, Ray Macartney, The Night Owls, Colin Ovens, Mick Hocking, Graham Baird, James Moore, Glenys Mills and more. Blues Tram is back on tracks

BENDIGO’S TRAMS ARE NOISY BEASTS. THEY’LL RING THE BELL AS THEY GLIDE THROUGH THE CITY, THEY’LL RUMBLE WHEN THEY’RE GOING AND SQUEAL TO A HALT WHEN THEY HAVE TO STOP. HOWEVER, EVERY NOW AND AGAIN A DIFFERENT TYPE OF NOISE COMES OUT OF THEM WHEN MUSICIANS AND MUSIC FANS PILE ONTO THE TRAM AND HAVE A MOBILE CONCERT. THE BLUES TRAM IS COLIN THOMPSON’S BABY, AND HE SPOKE TO MAX STAINKAMPH ABOUT HOW IT CAME TO BE AND HOW EXCITED HE IS FOR THE TRAM TO RETURN AFTER A COVID-ENFORCED HIATUS.

How did the idea came about? What made you want to try and get musicians on a tram? Julius Porlai, who has worked with me as part of the core crew of Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival’s core committee since we started over a decade ago, first had the idea of staging mellow gigs on Bendigo’s Vintage Trams, for inclusion in our festival program and as an ongoing event in its own right. The idea was reinforced to me when I first rode the trams with my daughter (four years old at the time) and I got an appreciation of what an enjoyable way to enjoy our city it is, riding these beautifully restored vintage trams at a leisurely pace. To have an artist playing their songs through a small PA on board to further embellish the experience seemed like a great fit, which it has proved to be every time we’ve done it. How did you go convincing people to jump onboard (literally and metaphorically)? There was no shortage of artists wanting to give the gig a go. And, thankfully, many live music lovers seem to agree that it’s an appealing way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon — especially while enjoying a drink or two with a partner or with friends. What’s it like onboard? How do musicians find it? We’ve consistently had positive feedback from our passengers since we started running The Blues Tram in 2012. It’s always a joy to put a smile on people’s faces with musical experiences, but this is one that is uniquely satisfying to our crew and to the people who come along. Our artist plays in the middle of the tram and the seats all face the middle. We situate the PA

speakers at each end facing the middle so that, no matter where you sit, you can hear the artist’s music, without it being too loud for anyone. We strongly encourage our audience before departure to be mindful of talking during songs, as we want everyone (the artists included) to be able to enjoy the performance to its fullest potential. Everyone’s usually very understanding and co-operative — we’ve not had to kick anyone off for bad behaviour … yet. For our artists, it can be a bit of a physical challenge, as the tram itself can lurch unexpectedly from time to time, depending on traffic conditions, so we encourage the performers to play seated (on a drum stool or such) and have both feet on the floor, to ensure stability and to help avoid being struck in the mouth with their microphone mid-song. Despite the challenges, all of our artists express the desire to play the tram again, so we always have a lot of interest from return artists, in addition to those reaching out seeking potentially playing with us for the first time. Has the popularity of it surprised you? It’s been a pleasant surprise to see how much of an icon The Blues Tram has become as a tourist and arts attraction, but we understand it as our crew all love it and continue to passionately pursue staging it on a volunteer basis, as we’ve done from the start. We’ve got a good-sized crew to draw on, for running the bar, running sound, emceeing — and the list of tram drivers wanting to be rostered on for it has traditionally been long and competitive as well, so we’re told. How excited are you to be back? After an enforced hiatus of more than two years and only being able to run ‘online gigs’ in that time for The Blues Tram, we couldn’t be more excited about returning to the rails this month. We’ll be running music on the tram monthly from here on in and (except due to unforeseen circumstances) it’ll be on the second Saturday of the month, as well as the four Blues Tram events we’ll run at the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival in November. We generally take December off but have already booked a strong roster of artists through mid-2023 and hope that The Blues Tram will continue to be central Victoria’s favourite mobile music venue for many years to come.

Something for everyone

THE ELMORE FIELD DAYS PROVIDE A TON OF FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY AND IT’S WHERE FARMERS CAN COME TO GET SOME GREAT IDEAS.

The three-day event will return to the Elmore Events Centre, 45 km south of Echuca, on October 4, 5 and 6. The annual event attracts a strong attendance of around 35,000 people from across Victoria and NSW. It is a must-attend event for anyone involved in agriculture. The Elmore Field Days feature information, education, demonstration and implementation of the latest agricultural technology, research and equipment. Some of the non-agricultural things to see include the heritage horses live demonstrations, an animal farm, reptile awareness display, camel rides, live music and a vintage tractor display. All roads lead to Kyabram

FOR THOSE PEOPLE ON THEIR ‘BIG LAP’ OF AUSTRALIA, OR FOR MUSIC LOVERS IN GENERAL, KYABRAM SHOULD BE MARKED DOWN ON YOUR SCHEDULE FOR EARLY NOVEMBER.

Kyabram’s Country Music Festival is held from Wednesday, November 2 right through until Sunday, November 6 (the weekend after Melbourne Cup Day). As many other events around the country were, the festival was cancelled in the past two years, so this year’s is expected to be especially spectacular. Kyabram’s Country Music Festival has become a popular destination for RV and caravan enthusiasts, as well as country music fans. The community is an RV-friendly town located between Shepparton and Echuca in north-central Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, about 200 km north of Melbourne. Held at the Kyabram Showgrounds, the fiveday event includes the town’s hugely popular annual bush market in the main street on Friday, November 4. There’s also an open mic on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the festival between 2 pm and 6 pm. Gates open from 8 am on Monday, October 31 for those wanting to set up, and close at 6 pm on Tuesday, November 8. There is a dump point onsite for RV users. Although known as Kyabram RV Country Music Festival, all people are welcome to attend. The festival has a huge line-up booked, which is sure to entertain. For more information on the festival and its line-up, go to: www.kyrvcountry.com.au/

Small town with a big idea

TONGALA EATS AND BEATS WILL ONCE AGAIN PLAY HOST TO LIVE MUSIC, LOCAL FOOD STALLS AND PLENTY OF KIDS’ ACTIVITIES.

The event, run by the Tongala Development Group, returns on Sunday, October 9 from 12 pm to 4 pm after the success of its debut last year. It was created to help the creative arts industry recover after tough times during COVID-19, and brought in more than 500 people to the Tongala Soundshell in 2021. Amber Townsend from the Tongala Development Group said it was a free community event and visitors would be very surprised at what the town of Tongala has to offer. “There will be a different artist doing a set for 45 minutes every hour,” she said. “This year in between the set changes, we will have local performers jump on stage.” The event will open with a Welcome to Country ceremony and an Indigenous performer. Extra food vans will be on deck as organisers are expecting more people to attend this year, as it will be a restriction-free event this time.

Amber said Tongala had so much to offer and a strong arts culture. “Come out and have a great day and support the local businesses involved,” she said. “We aren’t one of the major towns but we are central to all of them.

“We want to keep our local economy going and make sure our town is thriving, not just surviving.”

Tuck into tastes and tunes

IN THE STREET PARTY TO END ALL OTHERS, THE INAUGURAL KYABRAM TASTES AND TUNES WILL TAKE OVER THE TOWN’S MAIN DRAG FOR FIVE HOURS ON OCTOBER 22.

Food stalls, street dining and activities for the kids — only the final element of some stellar live music acts could top it off, and thankfully, organisers have ticked that box. The Baker Boys Band and Bodhi Hawken will bring the tunes, along with former Kyabramite Jayne Lilford coming back for a special performance, on stage for one night only. Kyabram Development Group committee member Carmen Nicholson said the event was about bringing people together. “It was something we discussed during lockdowns, we really felt for the businesses in town who had done it tough,“ she said. “So it’s about supporting local industries that have been through it but also it’s an opportunity for people to get together, those from Kyabram and from outside to visit our great little town. “The logo itself was actually sourced from a competition across nearby schools; it was designed

by a Year 10 St Augustine’s College student.” Stalls are set to line Allan St and side streets with an array of cuisines, goods and more on off er, all provided by vendors within a 20 km radius of Kyabram. The event has also secured a liquor licence for the street so crowds can grab a drink, a bite to eat, and sit back and relax on the provided street dining set-up. “It’s going to be a fantastic family night out — kids will be entertained, live music will pump down Allan St, it’s an opportunity to meet friends and family and just relax,” she said. The free event will take place in Allan St, Kyabram on Saturday, October 22 from 5 pm to 10 pm. For updates, visit: www.facebook.com/

PROUD MOMENT

By Nicole Thomson

The Pride of the Murray has reached it’s final destination at its new home in Longreach, Queensland, after a seven-day journey.

Owner of the Outback Pioneers, the company which bought the Pride of the Murray, Richard Kinnon, has welcomed the vessel to the Thomson River after the long trip.

“The Pride of the Murray is a 100-year old grandaddy of a paddle wheeler, so we took it slow and steady,” Mr Kinnon said.

“The weight of the haulage meant we had to drive very slowly and we were only permitted to drive during daylight hours.

“In some towns we had to jack up the trailer to get over guard rails and local councils were very accommodating removing street signs and the like along the way to make the trip easier.”

“It was wonderful to see so many people come out in small towns along the route to watch the Pride Safe and sound: Richard Kinnon with the Pride of the Murray at it’s new home in Longreach, Queensland.

of the Murray go by, it’s unlikely they will ever see anything like that again.”

The Pride has not returned to the water just yet, and its maiden voyage at its new home is scheduled for June 25.

“The boat travelled with boat builders and they managed the entire task well,” Mr Kinnon said.

“The boat has arrived in perfect condition.

“The Pride of the Murray has a very proud Australian history. Although her history might not be connected to Queensland, her future certainly will be.”

The Longreach community has welcomed the Pride of the Murray to the area with open arms, including past resident of Longreach and current resident of Echuca, Sophie Taiki.

“Being past residents of Longreach before moving to Echuca, I think it’s really nice to have a piece of our current home in our previous home,” she said.

“Longreach is a beautiful community, it booms with tourists as it’s such a historical town and I believe the Pride of the Murray couldn’t have gone to a better home.

“She will be so loved there and will continue to give tourists and locals joy as she did here with us.”

Wayne Lewis, who grew up in Echuca and now lives in Longreach, has seen the boat’s journey first-hand from the day it was constructed.

MENINYA MAKEOVER

By Nicole Thomson

Murray River Council has adopted the draft concept designs for the Meninya St redevelopment at Tuesday’s meeting.

The streetscape enhancement intends to transform Meninya St into a space that will have daytime and night-time venues and facilities, such as bike paths, cafes, laneways MENINYA ST REDEVELOPMENT TO MAKE MOAMA A TOURIST HUB

and outdoor or rooftop dining venues.

Murray River Council Acting Mayor Frank Crawley said the project hoped to transform the heart of Moama into a vibrant precinct of social and economic activity.

“The concept designs showcase the future vision for Meninya St by highlighting enhancements to the streetscape and Kerrabee Soundshell Precinct,” Cr Crawley said.

“Focusing on increasing pedestrian activity and economic development within Moama, the project aims to improve safety, accessibility and visual appearance of the streetscape.”

Informed by community feedback, the designs were developed utilising input from residents and business owners on the Meninya St Advisory Committee as well as the issues and opportunities identified in the 2019 Meninya St Master Plan. “Reshaping Meninya St from a transport thoroughfare into an innovative and sustainable precinct, this project intends to position Moama
