Expo is on again The fourth annual WTC Irrigation and Energy Expo will take place on Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29 under one big roof at Shepparton Showgrounds. The WTC Expo committee extends a warm welcome to all who attend this unique irrigation-focused expo. Farmers can visit to see the latest in water technology and energy efficiency on-farm, and to learn how they can apply these new innovations to improve productivity in their dairy, beef, horticulture and grain enterprises. We really have to look at what is affecting today’s farmer, and in the last couple of years we have started to have an increasing focus on energy. With rising energy costs, we have to look at the viability of each business, and consider innovations such as automation, solar dairies and pumps. Farmers can also bring their farm plans to take advantage of specialist advice and find the right systems for their needs. The WTC 2014 Irrigation and Energy Expo facilitates a diverse program of demonstrations and industry speakers with updates

on the On-Farm Irrigation Efficiency Program and GoulburnMurray Water’s Connections Project. Farmers wanting Wendy Buck to participate in either of these programs will find the expo an invaluable tool, as it is a one-stop-shop for both. There will also be government departments, delivery partners and manufacturers, all under one roof and available to advise and answer questions. There is ample parking at Shepparton Showgrounds, and farmers and their families can enjoy the opportunity to catch up with friends at the expo and stop for lunch in the large cafeteria-style seating area. See you there! For further information please contact WTC Expo chairman Wendy Buck; email wendy@wtcexpo.com.au or visit www.wtcexpo.com.au

Guiding catchment management The Sustainable Irrigation Program Advisory Group is the consultative body guiding integrated catchment management across the Shepparton irrigation region in the agricultural floodplains of the Goulburn Broken Catchment’s north. The group is made up of community and industry members as well as representatives from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Authority, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, Goulburn-Murray Water and local government. SIPAG collaborates with the organisation to deliver the Goulburn Broken Regional Catchment Strategy on behalf of the catchment community. This includes delivery of programs that support sustainable agriculture, such as farm water and whole farm planning, as well as those that manage threats to land and water, such as groundwater

pumping and provision of new drains to minimise salinity risks. SIPAG is also guided by a longerterm 30-year land and water management plan. In the past decade this plan has supported some significant achievements in natural resource management in the Shepparton irrigation region including building 40.1 km of drains, installing 80 groundwater pumps, delivering 1583 whole farm plans, and 381 on-farm irrigation upgrade projects. The success of this plan so far has relied on a strong community and agency partnership. To continue to build on these overarching strategies and plans and make sure they are relevant as conditions change and new issues arise, SIPAG has initiated a taskforce for community to lead the action planning that creates a shared direction for the irrigated landscape to manage priority issues in an integrated way. This includes aligning the plan to strategies of the Goulburn Broken CMA, industry and other agencies with natural resource management responsibilities, creating a way of promoting the region to the

Existing SIPAG members will be joined by invited community representatives from across the irrigated areas to contribute to the taskforce, which will run between May and August this year, with a series of facilitated workshops supported by current science and knowledge.

The taskforce will look at existing strategies and identify and incorporate new and emerging issues that need to be dealt with to continue to make this area a world-leader in the sustainable production of milk, fruit, vegetables and meat. The taskforce group will create a way forward for this sustainable production that also protects and enhances our natural

resources. This way forward will be promoted to the broader community, government and industry, to attract co-investment for the future. For people interested in the taskforce or any of the Goulburn Broken CMA Programs in the Shepparton irrigation region, contact Carl Walters at the Shepparton office on 5820 1100 or visit www.gbcma.vic.gov.au

Offering state-of-the-art systems and knowledge The implementation of the Murray-Darling Basin plan of 2012 is complemented by the Federal Government Department of the Environment’s Sustainable Rural Water Use and Infrastructure Program. Grants under this $450 million, four-year program are made via delivery partners to irrigators in southern connected systems of the basin. The Water Technology Cluster Irrigation and Energy Expo will showcase technologies and expertise which can be accessed by irrigators to deliver water

savings in compliance with the program. The expo also offers state-of-the-art knowledge and systems which can be considered for adoption, no matter what the source of funds. While the aforementioned Federal Government program and associated grants are one of the drawcards for irrigators to make changes to irrigation layouts and systems, they are not the only reasons. The Victorian Government has made funds available for on-farm works and irrigators are also making changes using their own funds, to avoid reducing their water right. Experience with the early rounds of the program confirmed the need to consider energy use efficiency, as well as water use efficiency in the selection of irrigation systems.

The expo is keen to promote technologies and plans which are both energy efficient and water-use efficient. WTC members are also keen to contribute to the evaluation of alternative water resources and to identify energy needs. It must be stated that selection criteria for the Federal Government grants focuses on water savings. Accordingly, WTC members must help irrigators achieve these savings while also ensuring that farms are productive and require minimal labour and energy to run. In addition, irrigation systems must be flexible to cope with possible changes in crops and pastures. There is growing investment in rice and cotton growing in this region, as well as investment in the processing of these

commodities. Horticultural and vegetable-oriented enterprises are also springing up to meet the worldwide demand for food, and irrigation districts of the Goulburn Murray and the Riverina can be readily adapted for alternative crops. The expo will have agronomists and irrigation technicians, as well surveyors and designers, available to discuss how irrigation farms can be adapted to meet the needs of the future. While the expo focuses on meeting the needs of irrigators, it will also cater for innovative and opportunistic farmers. I urge you to attend this free expo and take advantage of the gathering of highly experienced personnel with access to brilliant technology which will underpin the future of this region.

Roger Wrigley — Roger Wrigley, Water Technology Cluster chairman

Water delivery key to farm success I would like to welcome farmers and exhibitors alike to the 2014 WTC expo. Productivity on irrigated farms heavily relies on efficient and reliable water delivery and I trust this year’s event will provide farmers with a wealth of advice and information to benefit their properties. One of the priorities of this Victorian Coalition Government is to support our farmers in increasing their productivity and profitability to meet growing

global demand for food. To achieve this, farmers need to be supported by innovative and modern irrigation Peter Walsh technology. Works to modernise our irrigation systems are happening right across Victoria, providing farmers with more reliable and secure access to water. This provides better certainty when making on-farm planning decisions and encourages economic growth in the region. Local examples are the

Page 4—‘WTC Irrigation & Energy Expo’, Tuesday May 20, 2014

$100 million Victorian Farm Modernisation Project and the $2 billion Goulburn-Murray Water Connections project, which are significantly upgrading irrigation infrastructure across the GoulburnMurray Irrigation District, both on and off farm. I also recently visited Cosgrove to announce $5.4 million for a pipeline to supply stock and domestic water to 112 properties, year-round. This 65 km pipeline will replace a channel system that is more than 120 years old and is losing water to evaporation and seepage.

Soon after, I was in the Landsborough Valley in Western Victoria to provide $1.95 million from the Victorian Coalition Government’s Regional Growth Fund for the construction of a 25.5 km water main from Stawell to Glenarka Estate Vineyard. This will provide a reliable water supply to six vineyards in the Landsborough Valley, securing about 60 jobs. One of the vignerons told me that with a secure water supply he expected to increase production tenfold. This shows just how vital these irrigation upgrades are.

Other modernisation works are also occurring in the irrigation districts of: • Sunraysia; • Werribee; • Macalister; and • Swan Hill. The Victorian Coalition Government’s commitment to providing Victorian irrigators with modern delivery technology is clear and it will continue to be a focus as we work towards the goal of doubling food and fibre production. — Peter Walsh, Victorian Water Minister

Mayor welcomes visitors to the city Welcome to all the participants, exhibitors and spectators here to experience the Water Technology Cluster Irrigation and Energy Expo 2014 at the Shepparton Showgrounds. This is a very important event. The WTC expo provides a valuable opportunity for farmers and irrigators to learn about new water technology efficiencies and new technologies in farming. As this region is the food bowl of Australia, it is important for primary producers to remain up-todate with these technologies

and changes within the industry. Greater Shepparton is pleased to be the location selected for this expo. Events like this provide us with the opportunity to showcase the many assets in our region, including one of our key event facilities, the Shepparton Showgrounds. It has undergone a major redevelopment since 2005 including refurbishment and relocation of the heritage-listed grandstand, construction of the McIntosh Centre event pavilion, the Western Promenade, the Cattleman’s Bar, a hard stand area, car parks, landscaping, lighting towers, extensive power upgrades and the multi-purpose pavilion. The facility now hosts more than 75 events and more than 70 000 visitors each year, ranging from car displays, an agricultural show and swap meets.

With a population of more than 60 000, Greater Shepparton provides a variety of restaurants, bars and cafes, leisure services, retail outlets and attractions, offering visitors a wonderful place to enjoy during the event. I hope you are able to take the time to visit some of our local attractions such as Shepparton Art Museum and Victoria Park Lake while you are here. On behalf of Greater Shepparton City Council I would like to congratulate the organising committee for putting together such a fantastic event and hope you all enjoy your time in our region. Have fun while raising g funds for charity y Following on from the huge success of last year’s inaugural event, people in the water industry can once again tee-off for charity this month. The Water Industry and Community Fund Golf and Bowls Day will be Friday, y, May 30 at Hill Top Golf Club, Tatura. The fun-filled day focused on socialising and networking opportunities attracted close to a full course last year, and plenty of bowlers as well. More than 170 keen participants from the water industry took part, enjoying the fun, mateship and after-match refreshments. “It was a great day with many of the participants getting into the spirit of the day, dressing up and buying raffle tickets …” Community Fund Goulburn Valley spokeswoman Andrea McNab said. “With the generous support of our sponsors and participants, the incredible sum of $8500 was raised.” Ms McNab gave a special thank you to the fundraiser’s major sponsors; Transcom Connect, Rubicon and RPS Group. Teams of four bowlers or golfers can compete, and there are loads of prizes to be won, including best-dressed in the bowls category.

Golfers gather at last year’s event. WTC expo committee secretary John Mapson hopes to see similar numbers again this year, and anticipated the day would attract water corporation staff, contractors, consultants, past employees and associates. “It was our first year of the event last year, so we are anticipating that the word will be out about what a great day it is, and we are hoping for a good roll-up,” Mr Mapson said. He said the money raised would be distributed back into the community through the Community Fund Goulburn Valley, to support the aged, disabled and disadvantaged in a broad area spanning Tatura through to Cobram. For entry forms and information phone Andrea McNab on 0409 323 842 or email amcnab@thecommunityfund.com.au

Increase water efficiency. Save time, money and effort. Diane and Max Newman from Sound Exhaust and David Hall from Goulburn Valley Printing Services.

Get ahead using digital world A series of free digital workshops delivered by Greater Shepparton City Council aim to inspire Goulburn Valley farmers and irrigators to step out of the paddock and into the online world. Workshop consultant Ailsa Page said with high-speed internet coming to the region, numerous opportunities were open for local businesses to get ahead using digital methods. “The series of eight workshops are about developing a digital strategy; learning what that is, what the options are and how to approach all things digital,” Ms Page said. “There will be the opportunity to privately seek one-on-one business advice and direction as well.” The federally funded workshops will touch on topics such as selling online, becoming mobile-friendly, cloud computing, social media, online business tools and Google analytics. “We will look at the (systems) successful businesses are utilising to become more competitive and to improve the way their business operates,” Ms Page said. “I think particularly for farmers and producers, a lot of them want people to know what they are producing — they are looking for people to buy their products. “People do research online to find suppliers, if you are not online it is difficult for people to know (you are there).” Ms Page said people did not have to be daunted by digital systems, and it

was simpler when you knew where to start. She said the on-going workshops provided a basic understanding of what people should be doing, and also supported them in the next step of implementation. Webinars and online tools will be incorporated into the sessions, and can be accessed from home. Linking farmers and irrigators with local web designers is part of the process, and aims to generate networking between businesses. “Part of what we are trying to do is connect people locally, because often an issue is they don’t know where to go,” Ms Page said. “Technology is such a key part of business now, and the leading businesses — the ones that are really doing well — are incorporating this into the way they operate.” The workshops will be held at the Greater Shepparton Business Centre in New Dookie Rd, and throughout the Goulburn Valley region. “If there is a group of 10 businesses, we can travel and go further afield and bring the workshops to them,” Ms Page said. “We are running the sessions on different days and times, so more people will be able to attend and you don’t have to attend all eight sessions.” A representative will be on site at the WTC Expo to discuss the workshops, how they could assist individuals with their businesses, and how to sign up for future sessions. For more information or to book into a digital workshop, visit www.shepdigienterprises.com or phone the Greater Shepparton Business Centre on 5832 1100.

Products and services showcased I attended the Water Technology Cluster Irrigation and Energy Expo held at the Shepparton Showgrounds last year and enjoyed speaking with many stall holders and visitors who were taking advantage of the terrific opportunities offered. As the modernisation of the irrigation system continues throughout this region, I encourage irrigators to visit this year’s WTC Irrigation and Energy Expo, to take full advantage of the products and services being showcased. The annual expo, now in its fifth year, is again being held at the Shepparton Showgrounds and provides an excellent opportunity for farmers seeking current information about water saving and energy efficient technologies, and programs such as the $2 billion Goulburn-Murray Water Connections project and $100 million Victorian Farm Modernisation Project. I appreciate how important our farming communities are and the contribution they make in forming the Goulburn Valley’s agricultural base. Water is our wealth and we

must ensure irrigation, cropping, dairy farming and fruit growing are encouraged, because when regional Victoria is growing, the whole state prospers. The Goulburn Valley and Shepparton electorate have a bright future; investment in projects such as irrigation modernisation will help to ensure the region remains competitive as we seek to double food and fibre production by 2030 in Victoria. Reliability and security of water are important issues irrigators have raised with me, which highlights the importance of the recent announcement by the Victorian Coalition Government that stock and domestic water will flow year-round to 112 properties in the Cosgrove area thanks to a $6 million pipeline funded by the Victorian Government and tariff from Cosgrove landholders. I was present with Water Minister Peter Walsh, Member for Shepparton Jeanette Powell and local irrigators when this announcement was made at the Tungamah Pump Station. The Cosgrove Stock and Domestic Pipeline will replace an

Keen to see new technologies A bus load of farmers and irrigators from the Macalister irrigation district will travel five hours to attend this year’s WTC expo. The two-day visit is a joint partnership between Southern Rural Water and the Macalister demonstration farm, supported by Department of Environment and Primary Industries. DEPI spokesman Gavan Lamb said in southern Victoria, exposure to the industry’s new technologies was not readily available. “The expo gives our farmers and irrigators the chance to get together and have a look at the innovations that have been developed as part of the northern modernisation,” Mr Lamb said. “The fact that everything is in the one place at the one time is great, it is a very efficient way for our farmers to meet all the different suppliers.” A tour of the Rubicon factory

Greg Barr with Jeanette Powell and Peter Ryan. outdated and inefficient system and the new pipeline will provide landholders with a reliable water supply, improved water quality, and will service about 11 000 ha of agricultural land. To enable our irrigators to improve their efficiency and productivity it is important they have opportunities to access and learn about new technologies. The WTC Irrigation and Energy Expo is providing that opportunity and I look forward to catching up with many more stallholders and visitors at this year’s expo. — Greg Barr, Nationals candidate for Shepparton

and visits to farms are also on the list of things to do while in the Goulburn Valley. “We will look at some farms with flood irrigation automation systems; it is the way of the future,” Mr Lamb said. “The aim is to visit some of the irrigative farmers up north to see these systems in person and to speak to farm managers about how they work, and the benefits.” The three major advantages of such systems include water savings, increased production and labour savings. Mr Lamb said the energy component which has become a focus of this year’s expo would be a great addition. “This is of high importance in the Macalister irrigation district because we have a large number of spray irrigators due to our light soil types, which are ideally suited,” he said. “Spray irrigation requires energy to operate, and coming up with efficient systems to ensure they are economically viable is essential.”

Balancing uncertainty around price and availability Since 2006 Bendigobased Kilter Rural Water Solutions has been providing new opportunities for southern Murray-Darling Basin irrigators to secure their water requirements. Kilter Rural has developed a range of innovative water solutions that provide flexibility for southern MDB irrigators in the way they access entitlements and manage allocation water between and within irrigation seasons. With more than 160 Gl in water solutions delivered to irrigators since 2006, Kilter Rural has developed a strong reputation for developing water solutions to service irrigators’ needs. Examples of water solutions for irrigators include: • Entitlement purchase and lease back — irrigators looking to access the capital value of their water entitlements have entered into sale and lease-back arrangements, with more than 60 Gl of transactions completed

since 2008. Benefits of leasing include no capital outlay while retaining the same management freedom as if the entitlement was owned. An option to lock in a fixed re-purchase price at the end of the lease period is possible. • Forward purchasing of water allocation — enables irrigators to lock in the volume and price of their water allocation requirements with payments made at the time of delivery throughout the irrigation season. Payment may also be deferred to the time of harvest by the provision of security such as a crop lien. • Share-farm solutions — permits irrigators to access water allocations for their cropping requirements in exchange for a fixed percentage of crop revenue. • Water carryover solutions — by carrying over water between seasons, growers can purchase and store allocation water in advance to manage availability and price risk. Kilter Rural directly operates a 14 Gl irrigated cropping program and utilises this experience to develop solutions tailored to the

Making every drop count Representatives from Water Dynamics Shepparton and Yarrawonga branches will share the best water management knowledge at this year’s irrigation expo. “It’s a good chance for farmers to catch up on the latest technology,” Yarrawonga’s branch and sales manager Paul Moat said. The Australian owned and operated company will showcase different products and services including the TL pivot solution, drip and tape irrigation and hard hose solutions. Mr Moat said the TL hydraulic centre pivot was manufactured by one of the main three pivot manufacturers in the world and would be the key product at the company’s stand. “It’s the only continuous move hydraulic pivot in the marketplace,” Mr Moat said. The model was specifically designed for low-speed, high torque applications and operates well in either direction. To provide farmers with optimal safety and eliminate the danger of electrocution, the

The TL pivot supplied by Water Dynamics. TL hydraulic system uses oil pressure to drive rather than mains power. It is also renowned for producing crop uniformity and having an eight-year warranty, which is the longest warranty in the pivot business. Mr Moat said the company’s spare parts department was an essential part of its service and the Yarrawonga branch was the major distribution centre for all TL parts. Along with the Shepparton and Yarrawonga branches, Water Dynamics has another 11 branches across Australia. National sales manager David Bell said being a national business gave the regional branches more buying power to supply a wide range of products.

“We are a whole irrigation business with a full range of irrigation equipment backed by expert staff with in-depth knowledge,” Mr Bell said. “We have more than 100 years of combined local knowledge and experience behind us.” The company’s extensive range covers irrigation systems from pivot to domestic and commercial pumping products, travelling irrigators, windmills, water storage tanks and submersible and borehole pumps. Expo visitors at the Water Dynamics stall will get the chance to win a $500 Water Dynamics’ store credit. For more information, visit Water Dynamics at site 55 at the WTC Expo or phone 1300 928 371.

Upton Engineering specialises in low pressure centre pivot irrigators. Founded in 1944, the company at Corowa has built irrigation systems in all states of Australia and overseas. Upton Engineering is the head distributor of Pierce centre pivot, linear and corner-arm mechanised irrigation systems and will offer a range of Pierce products at this year’s Irrigation Expo. Upton Engineering managing director Paul Upton said Pierce’s latest pivot control panel, the EvoTouch, would be the key demonstration at the expo. With the EvoTouch, farmers can control and monitor their irrigation machinery using their smart phone or tablet by using a simple and userfriendly operating system. The control panel has built-in wi-fi access and has been designed with the latest in high-resolution touch screens and a Nema 3X stainless enclosure. “It saves the farmer from travelling around all the time just to check up on machines,” Mr Upton said. “It saves them time and money.” Pierce Australasia sales manager Peter Hickey said the EvoTouch’s off-the-shelf SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Access) software

Tailor-made solutions W&P Pumps in Kyabram specialises in Chinese pumps and Ackmac automation for irrigation and will exhibit a number of its products at the irrigation expo. On display will be the business’ electric pump sets, centrifugal pumps, self-priming pumps and diesel engines for irrigation solutions. “We are very excited to be a part of the irrigation expo and very excited to hear the responses from the farmers about the advances in technology and water efficiency in the water industry,” W&P Pumps sales manager Shane McGlade said. The diesel engines on display will be Japan’s number one diesel engine brand, Yanmar, plus iconic British brand Lister Petter and Chinese brand Yangdong. Mr McGlade said while stocking the best diesel engines and pumps was important, being able to repair the machinery was just as vital. “With all of our engines we carry parts so that we can repair them. That way the customer doesn’t have to wait for a part to be ordered,” he said. “We have customers from NSW who can come and have lunch and then they can carry on their

way — it’s a fast turnaround.” W&P Pumps has found a common issue for farmers is chasing the best solution for their irrigation needs. “A lot of people do it to a price but W&P Pumps will go the extra mile to get the project to the farmer’s requirement,” Mr McGlade said. “What we do is tailor-make each pump to the individual set-up so each pump doesn’t just come out of the box.”

Waterpool helps solve the water puzzle Since its establishment in October 2012, Waterpool has grown from a humble start-up base of 50 people to a prominent group of 700 members. Chief executive Peter Lawford said the water trading co-operative’s success could be attributed to transparent trading, which provided market disclosure. “It is owned by the water industry, for the benefit of the water industry,” Mr Lawford said. “We operate a weekly pooled water exchange and basically it is a market-driven mechanism. “The actual traders set the price rather than us, and that is a very open and transparent method of trade which provides the market with a strong guide of price.” Mr Lawford said the integrity around that pool was supported by it being independently audited each week. At the Water Technology Cluster Irrigation and Energy Expo, irrigators can seek information on a range of topics at the Waterpool site.

Experts will be on hand to offer advice on carryover water, spillable water accounts and reserve policy; water share ownership, tax implications of selling water share, risk analysis of water share holdings, resource position, use limits and delivery share; and how to trade and the cost of trade. “People will find the most up-todate information and we certainly offer a broad spectrum of industry experience and knowledge,” Mr Lawford said. He said Waterpool were also available for free consultations with irrigators, who may need to analyse their water or entitlements. The co-operative also hosted annual road shows throughout northern Victoria to help people solve the water puzzle. Guest speakers from reputable organisations provided specialised advice on a range of topics related

to the water industry. Hundreds of people attended the road shows last year, which received excellent feedback and provided clarity around water issues, while emphasising the importance of keeping up-to-date with constant changes. Waterpool membership is a one-off $50 fee, which entitles the member to trade on the Waterpool pooled water exchange, and enables voting on matters referred to members by the board of directors. For more information on this year’s road shows or the latest information on the water scene, visit Waterpool at site six of this year’s WTC expo, phone Peter Lawford at Waterpool on 5853 2333 or email admin@waterpoolcoop. com.au

Designing irrigation for all shapes and sizes Rich River Irrigation Developments is a multidisciplinary company which works with all facets of the irrigation and farming sector. Established in 1980, RRID is actively involved in survey, design and management of irrigation projects, land surveying, environmental engineering and natural resource management. The firm was also a founding member of the Irrigation Surveyors and Designers Group and is an active member of the Irrigation Association of Australia, Institution of Surveyors and the Spatial Sciences Institute. In 2007, RRID introduced a new dimension to the

business with the addition of a dealership with Bauer, a world-leading irrigation equipment manufacturing company. RRID projects vary from small family farm concerns up to some of Australia’s largest irrigation and agriculture companies. Designing a layout that best meets client’s management objectives for their property is a key element, and RRID has completed projects for water storages ranging from 1 Ml to 10 000 Ml, and survey and designs for properties ranging from 5 ha to 100 000 ha. Sales manager Darren Kell said spray irrigation would be a focus of RRID’s site at this year’s WTC expo. He said advantages of such equipment, including pivot and lateral systems, were high irrigation efficiency and

improved crop yield — while saving water and labour. With more than 70 years of collaborative experience, RRID has in-depth knowledge of the industry and works closely with all stakeholders from initial inception through to project completion. For more information, visit RRID at the WTC expo site 53, phone 5482 2564 or visit www.rrid.com.au

Winter works to upgrade channels

A multi-million dollar pipeline replacement will ensure a reliable stock and domestic water supply to landholders in the Cosgrove region.

Cosgrove pipeline launched Stock and domestic water will flow year-round to 112 properties in the Cosgrove area thanks to a $6 million pipeline launched in April. Victorian Water Minister Peter Walsh made the announcement at the Tungamah Pump Station and said the Cosgrove Stock and Domestic Pipeline would provide landholders with a reliable water supply and improved water quality. “The 65 km pipeline will service about 11 000 ha of agricultural land, sourcing water from the Goulburn system through

an extension of the existing Tungamah piped water district,” Mr Walsh said. “It will replace the current Shepparton Stock and Domestic Community Water Supply Scheme channel system, which is more than 120 years old. The Victorian Coalition is taking action to see this outdated and inefficient system finally upgraded.” Goulburn-Murray Water has started an early works program, with the project hoped to be complete by late this year. Funding of a further $650 000 will be raised through a tariff to Cosgrove customers.

M More tthan h $ $14 14 million illi off channel h l works k will be completed across the Goulburn and Murray valleys during Goulburn-Murray Water’s winter works program. G-MW Connections project director Ian Rodgers said the major works program would include channel remediation works such as plastic lining, clay lining and outer bank remodelling and the installation of gates to automate 88 regulators. “During this year’s winter works program more than 13 km of channel will be upgraded. Of this, 5.7 km will undergo outer bank remodelling and clay lining,” Dr Rodgers said. The works are funded by the Victorian and

Commonwealth governments through their $2 billion investment in the project. The extensive works will mean more traffic, earth-moving equipment and heavy vehicles will be operating in the area. Dr Rodgers urged people to be aware of the increased traffic on local roads and drive safely. “For safety reasons, public access to the work sites will not be permitted during the construction period,” he said. For maps of the works locations go to www.gmwconnectionsproject.com.au For more information on the Connections Project, phone the team on 1300 163 006.

Connections project on track G-MW Connections director Ian Rodgers said it was on track to deliver one of the biggest irrigation renewal projects ever undertaken. “The Connections project will improve irrigation services and resize G-MW’s existing network, to support the many and varied irrigation agricultures across the region,” Dr Rodgers said. “Through the Strategic Connections Project

(SCP) process, the project will work with more than 1100 individual projects and 7390 G-MW landowners to install or rationalise nearly 20 km. “At completion, the Connections project expects to operate about 3500 km of channels, supplying water to about 12 000 irrigation outlets.”

Automated system makes life easier for farmers WiSA is an Australian-owned company leading the way in irrigation control and automation technology. For more than 18 years, WiSA has been improving farmers’ lifestyles and profits through its automated irrigation systems. WiSA’s automated control systems have helped to improve the operation and efficiency of all types of irrigation systems, including pipe-and-riser, border-check, pivot, lateral drip and micro-sprinkler systems. WiSA’s automated irrigation systems give farmers greater control and flexibility over their irrigation management. Real-time data is collected through a range of sensors and then this is integrated with any irrigation system using WiSA’s AquaLink software. The information collected can then be used to make decisions on how and when to irrigate the farm. The whole irrigation system can be remotely controlled from any smart phone or tablet. What sets WiSA apart is its flexibility and innovation. Field unit assemblies are individually tailored to each customer’s needs. The field unit that is controlling a 150 Watt DC motor is going to be different to the unit that is turning a little solenoid valve on and off. Also, all of WiSA’s electronic boards and software are designed in-house

and manufactured in Melbourne. WISA has pioneered a lot of new technology during the years and now has satellite systems available, which are vital to outlying properties that don’t have any connection to the internet. WiSA’s systems are in 97 countries and on all types of farms, including viticulture, vegetables, orchards and broadacre. WiSA is helping famers and businesses overseas with ongoing projects in the United States, the Middle East and Europe. Closer to home at Norioka, Keith and Jeanette Holland had a WiSA automated system installed on their property in 2011 and have been impressed with the results. “I now have complete control of my irrigation system, and irrigation can now be easily assessed and controlled even when off-farm,” Mr Holland said. “Cost savings have been evidenced through reduced travel time and fuel to open and close bay outlets, and reduced water usage. “Previous risks of tiredness through working at night, often alone, and the threat of encountering snakes in the dark, are now eliminated by automated scheduling.” For more information, visit WiSA Irrigation at site 43 at the WTC Expo or phone 5480 7713 or 1300 887 380.
