AMERICAN BULLY
It is a new school year. That means new lessons, new stories, and even new friends. Unfortunately, this also means new bullies which appear in every town, and every school from elementary to college. This is a nationwide issue and can have severe consequence, even death. So whose job is it to prevent bullying? The answer is simple, everyone. Every student, teacher, parent, neighbor, absolutely everyone could contribute to end bullying. A major obstacle when it comes to overcoming bullying is witnesses that do nothing but watch. Here are only a few stories out of the millions about the tragic epidemic of b u l l y i n g . Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, an 11 year old from New Leadership Charter School, committed suicide in 2009. He was being teased every day. Walker-Hoover was a boy scout and participated in football and basketball. Bullies would taunt and threaten him, make fun of his clothes and call him gay daily. This went on for awhile with no preventative action until one day Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover could no longer take the bullying and hung himself. His mother, a breast cancer survivor, stated “It was the worst experience of my life, and I’m a breast cancer survivor. Four years, it was four years ago I had breast cancer.” She had found Carl lifeless when she went to check on him. He used an extension cord to hang himself. Another true story started and ended with Eric Mohat who was being harassed constantly. The bullies would use words like “fag” and “homo” simply because Mohat participated in the Mentor High School music and theater department. He also suffered physical bullying as well, sometimes even in front of school officials. This harassment got to the point that one bully told him “Why don’t you go home and shoot yourself, no one will miss you.” Unfortunately Mohat took that statement to heart and killed himself in 2007 at the age of 17. In March 2009, Mohats’ parents had decided to file a law suit against the school. Not for money, but for action. They just wanted an anti-bullying program to be set in the school. The Mohats mentioned that bullying was the cause of 3 other children’s suicide in Eric’s class, all in 2007. Four children within the same year, from the same school, could not battle the horrifying problem of bullying alone. In recent news, Tyler Clementi committed suicide at the age of 18. He was
attending Rutgers University. On September 22nd 2010, Clementi made an alarming statement on facebook “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.” Then he was found September 29th 2010 floating down the Hudson River after jumping off the George Washington Bridge. Dharan Ravi, Clementi’s roommate, had been taping Clementi while he participated and sexual activities with another male partner. Ravi and his friend Molly Wei now face invasion of privacy and possibly bias intimidation charges. This could mean a possible 10 years in prison but that means nothing to Tyler Clementi, who just could tolerate the harassment anymore. This story is a case of cyber bullying. Bullying has many faces and this age brings it even further. This problem has become too severe that our children would take their lives before they had a chance to live it. Even though he was 18, Clementi was still too young for this. He still had a full life to live as did all the others whose stories all have one commonality – suffering from bullying. Again these are just a small portion of stories you can find online. The results of an online search on this topic are disturbingly high. Thanks to the internet however there are sites that can guide us through these issues. Please take the time to check them out, here are a few: http://www.reportbullying.com/ http://www.olweus.org/public/index.page http://www.nobully.com/ http://www.cyberbullyhelp.com/ http://www.bullies2buddies.com/ Be sure to search for more programs to help put a stop to this serious issue.

RELATIONSHIOP ON FIRE
A Sandusky woman has been charged with aggravated arson and disorderly conduct on October 8th. Late Friday night Glinda Branham set fire to her boyfriend’s apartment. The couple had been arguing earlier that day. He had enough of her, and wanted her out of the house. S h e refused to leave so he called a family member to come o v e r and help him out. T h e family member stayed for awhile to make sure everything would be alright. After awhile the family member had to leave, which they came to regret later because soon after their departure Branham set fire to the mattress. The family member who had
been there earlier came back after receiving word of the incident. Branham admitted that she had started the fire right in front of police officers. She screamed the confession over and over to the police, throwing in some fowl language as well. The police cuffed her and now she sits in the Erie county jail. No bail has been set at this time. Fortunately no one was harmed, not even the dog.

MURDER IN KANSAS
Sunday, September 19th a Toledo native, was arrested in the Sylvania Township. 26 year old William D. Holt, II was charged with aggravated burglary and first degree murder. The victim, Mitch Vose age 32, was found dead in his home early Saturday, September 18th. Vose had been shot to death around 5am. Holt had no criminal record prior and leaves behind his 8 year old son. It is believed that Holt entered the Topeka, Kansas home with the intent to shoot Vose. The relationship between Holt and Vose is currently unclear. This is the 10th homicide for Topeka this year. With the help from witnesses, the police quickly identified and located Holt as the. Topeka police issued the warrant for his arrest and worked with the Sylvania Township police for a quick arrest. Holt willingly showed up at the police station to talk to the detectives. Holt appeared in court, in front of Judge McDonald, for an extradition hearing on September 28th. He waived his right for a hearing, and agreed to be extradited to Kansas. His extradition to Topeka is presently unknown.
Online Stalkers Love Your Facebook! You think your kids are safe from online stalking? Well according to the United States Census Bureau there are more kids and teenagers online with pictures, videos of themselves being available to sex offenders and other cyber stalkers. With the use of social networking and media sites such as; Facebook, Myspace and Ustream, Sexual Predators can watch their prey and action without these kids having no idea that others are watching. Parents need to ensure the internet controls are turned on, and have conversations with their children constantly to keep them safe from online stalking. For more information about this vast and severe issue, check out www.cyberangels.com in order to be well informed on keeping your loved ones safe. MOE JOHNSON

FAST FACTS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the United States, more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. (“Violence Against Women, A Majority Staff Report,” Committee on the Judiciary, United States Senate, 102nd Congress, October 1992, p.3.) There are 1,500 shelters for battered women in the United States. There are 3,800 animal shelters. (Schneider, 1990). Three to four million women in the United States are beaten in their homes each year by their husbands, ex-husbands, or male lovers. (“Women and Violence,” Hearings before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, August 29 and December 11, 1990, Senate Hearing 101-939, pt. 1, p. 12.) Stop the Young Thuggin! We’ve had gangs before living in Toledo, Ohio, however it has become a vast issue across our communities, and people are simply tired of it! With these punks being more violent and absolutely ruthless it’s time we take a direct approach in order to silence the outbreak of crime! Even the oldest gang members have agreed that such punks aren’t following the “code” – only attack rival gangs, not neutrals! Enough is enough, we need to inform local enforcement on all suspicious activities and notify crime stoppers in order to end their local reign of terrorism! Don’t forget, that it is only a matter of time when a young, and innocent child gets hurt and hurts our future generation as a whole. MOE JOHNSON

The illegal drugs trade has arisen as a result of drug prohibition laws. In the First Opium War the Chinese authorities had banned opium but the United Kingdom forced the country to allow British merchants to trade in opium with the general population. Smoking opium had become common in the 1800s due to increasing importation via British merchants. Trading in opium was (as it is today in the heroin trade) extremely lucrative. As a result of this illegal trade an estimated two million Chinese people became addicted to the drug. The British Crown (via the treaties of Nanking and Tianjin) took vast sums of money from the Chinese government through this illegal trade which they referred to as “reparations”. -WIKIPEDIA, ILLEGAL DRUG TRADE
