Welcome to the 1st edition of Dhaka Art Summit. The recent economic and cultural boom in Asia has led to a significant growth in Asian Art. Chinese, Japanese, Korean & Indian artists have been in full bloom in the international art scene over the last 10 years. Presently, there has been a rise of the art scene in South Asian countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka & Pakistan. Now we welcome you to the 1st edition of Dhaka Art Summit. Dhaka Art Summit is organized with a target of showcasing the vibrant art scene of Bangladesh. The 1st edition of the Summit is focused on the local artists and galleries only. In the future we plan to invite international artists and galleries to exhibit their works in the Summit along with the local galleries. The uniqueness of Dhaka Art Summit is that apart from the participation of Galleries, artists are also independently participating directly instead of being represented by galleries, giving them an opportunity to promote themselves. In the 1st edition, 19 local galleries and 220 artists are participating independently in the Summit. One of the major attractions during the Summit is the Samdani Art Award. 29 selected artists are participating in this competition. The Summit is also featuring various installations, performance art, and there is a dedicated video lounge and a two day Speakers Forum led by 19 world renowned curators, historians, critics, artists and collectors at the Summit Venue. As part of the Dhaka Art Summit, 3 major public curated exhibitions and several other exhibitions of modern and contemporary art in galleries and art spaces are taking place around the city. On behalf of the Summit Steering Committee and the organizer, Samdani Art Foundation and our partners Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Bangladesh National Museum, I would like to thank all the participating galleries, artists, sponsors and partners for their support. I believe this is a new journey for the Bangladeshi art and will be an unforgettable experience for all of us. We look forward to see you again in the 2nd edition of Dhaka Art Summit.

Bengal Gallery Bengal Foundation, a private trust, began its journey in the late eighties. Abul Khair Litu, The Chairman’s personal regard for the arts coupled with his vision of projecting a culturally rich Bangladesh that will rise above the typical portraiture of a country steeped in flood and famine, led to Bengal Foundation’s initial sojourn. In the course of its work the Foundation has been abetted by an enlightened body of creative thinkers. After more than twenty years on the trail, Bengal Foundation’s work now encompasses almost all forms of visual and performing arts. Music and painting, however, remain its central concern. It is a matter of great pride that Bengal Foundation is possibly the only organization in the country that is wholly funded by the internal resources of a local business house, the Bengal Group. Whilst Bengal Group tries relentlessly to live up to its social commitment, Bengal Foundation continues to play a premium role in the cultural arena of Bangladesh. The Foundation has so far published over a hundred albums of a fine selection of Bengali music. There are monthly concerts, festivals, and workshops that keep the music circuit energized. Bengal Scholars can avail grants for higher training in art and music. The Bengal Foundation Award brings national level recognition to distinctive painters every two years. Bengal Bikash tops the list in ground-breaking work that brought many young talents to the fore in 2006. Bengal Foundation’s flagship publication Jamini, the first international arts quarterly in Bangladesh, and Kali O Kalam, a widely acclaimed Bengali literary magazine, continue to do well on their sixth year of publication and are credited with introducing new trends in the publishing domain. Each year Kali O Kalam honours new talent by issuing the coveted Tarun Sahitya Puraskar (Young Writer’s Award). Since 2001 Bengal Foundation has funded the single largest project for the development of theatre. In partnership with Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation this wide-reach project has held staged numerous plays, held festivals and workshops, provided grants and has honoured individuals. As part of its commitment towards achieving social good, Bengal Foundation carries out educational programmes in schools across Bangladesh that focus specifically on disseminating the tools of theatre as a means of self-expression and empowerment. In order to provide a congenial venue for cultural events, the Bengal Shilpalaya, of which the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts is a part, was established in April 2000. In its amazingly successful run Bengal Gallery has hosted more than 200 exhibitions at home and abroad, showcased the work of over 250 local and international artists, published hundreds of catalogues, and produced 35 documentary films on art. An important part of this first professionally run gallery in Dhaka is to present Bangladesh’s art in international forums-and this it has done successfully in Brussels, Tokyo, Kolkata, Dubai, Toronto and New York. The gallery organizes local and international art camps, workshops and seminars, and supports local art organizations in their work. In line with the objective of promoting art and educating the public, access to all Bengal Foundation events is free of charge. Sporting more than 3,500 pieces by master painters and other noted artists, the Bengal Foundation Art Repository is said to be the largest collection of contemporary artwork in the country. Bengal Foundation engages in lateral collaborations to encourage exchange of thoughts, ideas and
practices. The Bengal-Khoj Residency Programme is an exchange programme between Kolkata and Dhaka that organizes residencies for practitioners of alternative art. Likewise, the Bengal-Impressario partnership responsible for organizing monthly musical soirees and stage events by Bangladeshi performers in India, has recently kicked off with a series of major events in Delhi . These and other initiatives form the backbone of Bengal Foundation’s endeavour to share the richness and diversity of Bangladesh’s heritage with other communities.

Santaran Art Organization As a non profit art organization, Shantaran is continuing its journey for last twelve years with the hope and mission to shape the artistic values regarding country, society, nation, economics, sociology, philosophy etc. in a more defined artistic way. Artistic sense is a very integrated part of human life, which is acquired by birth and that requires proper guidance to generate the values for life. We believe art is not only the skill of some particular techniques, but the artistic expressions of a total life and philosophy is the real art. Shantaran is giving effort for guiding people to acquire art as the strongest medium for their better living. Shantaran started this journey in 1999 through the first group exhibition, though it was officially founded in 1998. In our social context, art is a commodity for rich people to display on the walls of their drawing rooms. But as the subject and as the creator of art objects, many people of the have not classes are very much connected to the art. Shantaran believes appropriate presentations of the time can also fulfill the basic needs of human beings as it was happened in the cave life of pre-historical era. And so, the members of our group with their inspirations from the natural beauty of Chittagong, are actively involved to reach the people of all the classes for shaping their artistic thoughts. Nine yearly outcomes, seven artist camps, six art workshops, three artist residency including three permanent programs of public art project—Kalpapuri (children art), Harit (art of environmental development) and Shikar (activities for development and preservation of folk arts), all are running successfully by the organization as the parts of this journey. Apart from that, Shantaran is conducting research works on historical sites and organizing mural camps for spreading children education in Hill Tracts, and taking part in joint activities with other organizations for the same noble causes. Shantaran is now registered by the Ministry of Social Welfare of People’s Republic of Bangladesh and we feel this recognition is a great honor to inspire us for our further journey towards the future. All the members of our group are actively involved with different sections of the Multi Disciplinary Art which has a vast range including Site Specific Art, Performance Art, Installation Art, Land Art and many others of the New Media arts. Besides that Santaran’s artists are trying to invent the new languages of art through the implementation of their thought and philosophy. Therefore with the deeper understanding of our culture and tradition, we are trying to capture the trends of historical art, philosophy, common beliefs and values in our artistic expressions. We believe that through these activities our art will become the ‘Jnayanbriksha’ (alike a Banyan tree of knowledge) which is rooted to the ground but spreading its branches all over the sky and in this way one-day we will achieve the goal of "Art for Dignifying Life".
