BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR THAI EXPORTS TO EU AS 5 PERCENT GROWTH IS EXPECTED
Synopsis: Thai exports to the European Union in 2014 are expected to reach $23.5 billion, a 5% increase year-on-year, as a result of the EU’s lifting of the ban on Thai chicken imports. Thailand has received a quota of 90,000 tonnes for raw chicken exports to the EU. Some Thai products have been removed from the list of products eligible for tariff privileges under the EU's generalised system of preferences (GSP), and the Thai-EU free trade talks have been suspended and cannot be finalised before the GSP privileges for Thailand expire in 2015. As a result, some Thai exporters will be affected and will have to implement cost-cutting measures to maintain competiveness of their products. However, as long as the product quality is maintained, EU consumers should be able to accept the inevitable price hikes. The value of Thai exports to the 15 countries in the EU totaled $1.7 billion in January.
