Let’s Light up our cities with a cLeaner source of eLectricity. We all need electricity. Whether it’s to light up the local football match or warm the half-time drink – it’s an essential part of powering our lives. Shell is helping to deliver natural gas to more countries than any other energy company. When used to generate electricity, this natural gas emits around half the CO2 of coal. It’s one of the most abundant sources of energy available today and, with our continued innovation, it could provide us with cleaner energy for around the next 250 years. And it’s one of a number of different sources of energy we’re investing in to power and sustain our lives today and into the future. Let’s broaden the world’s energy mix.

PRIME MINISTER MARK RUTTE VISITS KL Before and after the intensive meetings with PM Najib and other Ministers and high level officials, time was reserved to meet with a small group of selected Dutch entrepreneurs in the morning, while in the afternoon the Prime Minister met with the MDBC Board and some 25 Dutch MDBC members. During the high energy and interesting dialogue, the PM inquired about doing business in and with Malaysia, possible areas for improvements, and what the Dutch can learn from this region. With the objective of following up with his counterparts Prime Minister Najib and the Australian Prime Minister Abbott, Mark Rutte travelled to Malaysia and Australia in early November.

The context for the visit was of course set by the tragedy of the MH17 flight, which requires strong cooperation between the involved countries on recovering and identifying the victims, but also to investigate the causes of the tragedy.

rabobank’s financial markets outlook “Life in the new normal” MDBC members were invited to attend a special briefing by Rabobank International on the Financial Markets Outlook for 2015 at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur. After a welcome and introduction by Marcel van Doremaele (CEO Singapore Branch & Representative Markets), Michael Every (Head of Financial Market Research, Asia Pacific) gave his presentation. Every is based in Hong Kong; he analyses the major developments in the Asia-Pacific region and contributes to the bank’s various economic research publications. The “new normal” is shrouded in uncertainty but some trends are emerging – and not all are welcome. Market volatility has disappeared, yet the world is hardly a less risky place. The US economy is still disappointing, but the Fed continues to taper quantitative easing and the debate on rate-hike timing is underway – but how high are “normal” US rates now? The ECB has been getting ever-more creative - but is Europe still stuck as the ‘next Japan’? While China looks set to meet its GDP growth target, is it building up imbalances for the future with its own easy money? And how will Asia struggle when the anticipation of US rate hikes gets underway? SUSTAINABILITY AWA R D S 2 0 1 4

SPECIAL EVENT

Congratulations to the winners of the MDBC Sustainability Awards 2014! l to r: Lex Smeding (MDBC), SP Ching (Dutch Lady), H.E. Harry Molenaar (Chief Judge & Netherlands Ambassador), Ee Laine Wong (Dutch Lady), Dato’ Mizanur Rahman Ghani, YB Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Luuk Runia (Asian Perlite Industries), Zainul Rahim (MDBC Chairman), Wouter van der Weijden (&samhoud), and Marco Winter (MDBC)

More than just a regular awards ceremony, the MDBC Sustainability Awards (MSA) has always sought to improve its format, evolve and maintain a timely focus on the important issues in the field. It aims to help others develop a deeper understanding of sustainability; to emphasize that sustainability is more than just being environmentally friendly, it implies responsible and proactive decision-making and innovation which minimizes negative impact and maintains a balance between People, Planet and Profit. The MSA does this through the sharing of best practices from the best in the field: presentations and case studies from the elite shortlisted companies who participate in the MSA day program.

The second element introduced was the interactive live voting which took place after each segment of the MSA day program. The audience casted votes for who they thought gave the best presentation in each segment. Results were displayed in real time for all to see and final scores were tabulated and presented to the judges to aid them in the case of a tie, giving an exciting and interactive element to the contest.

MDBC also believes that in order for an organization to be sustainable, it must innovate. Those who do not have the foresight and willingness to invest in the future risk losing relevance in the market place The inclusion of innovation in the MSA this year is a reflection of the growth and evolution of the awards; it is in fact, part and parcel of our own journey down the path of sustainability.

The MSA’14 awards focused on Business Sustainability with two categories, one for MNCs and another for SMEs. Companies had to show exemplary practices on business sustainability, encompassing all aspects of business growth. In the MSA Innovation Pioneer segment, competitors had to answer how they encouraged a culture of innovation within their organization.

As part of MDBC’s own innovative twist to the MSA, and in strong partnership with the Netherlands Embassy, new segments and more interactive elements were introduced to the awards program.

The final segment in this year’s award program was the Jaffar Indot Award.

First, MDBC introduced an additional way for candidates to register and participate in the MSA’14 program. In addition to the word document forms which could be completed and emailed to MDBC, candidates could also submit their nominations via an online platform developed by MDBC member Alpha Catalyst Consulting.

Finally, MSA’14 featured three separate segments: 1. The MSA’14 Awards 2. The MSA Innovation Pioneer segment 3. The Jaffar Indot Award on Corporate Governance.

Created to honor all the work and efforts the previous MDBC Chairman - the late Dato’ Jaffar Indot - put into corporate governance and the MDBC. This award was our way of supporting the continuing efforts that must be made in this field. Held on 3 December 2014 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, we could not have had a better host for the MSA’14. With their own deep commitment to CSR / Sustainability activities (as shown by their work with HOPE Worldwide and numerous other outreach and educational programs), the DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, together with other “green” organizations such as Empire Green (who supplied the green walls for our stage backdrop and photowall), were able to create a truly lush, memorable, AND sustainable environment for this gala evening. YB Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Minister of Energy, Green Technology & Water, was the guest of honour. Live entertainment came from the 7-piece Dutch Swing College Band, the leading and best-known jazz orchestra in the Netherlands. Many thanks to our MSA14 sponsors Transmare Group, TNT, Sime Darby, Philips, MIDA and AkzoNobel. Other support was provided by GAB/ Heineken, Unilever/Wall’s, Sime Darby Plantation’s GoFresh pink guava juice, Dutch Lady Milk, Uhrenholt, Downtown, Sketchpost and TwoSons. For more information on MSA’14, judges, shortlisted candidates, and the winners, please check out the MSA 2014 Supplement.

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM THE SIP EXPERIENCE: Angela Jongman & Lina Douma @ Summer Academy Both Angela Jongman and Lina Douma are fourth year Applied Psychology students at Hanzehogeschool Groningen. Doing their internship in Kuala Lumpur with MDBC member Summer Academy (an education organization with four kindergartens and a primary school), their internships focused on the interpersonal and intrapersonal side of child development. Based on their respective interests, Angela became an assistant teacher at one of the kindergartens and Lina became an assistant teacher at the TTDI Primary School.

Angela Jongman & Lina Douma with their Summer Academy colleagues.

team and both were assigned a thesis supervisor who helps to discuss the topics of their internships with them.”

According to Julie Lee (Summer Academy), “As assistant teachers, they became directly involved in the day to day role of a teacher, and interacted with the children every day. This is the 4th time we have participated in the program in the past 5 years. The interns introduce Dutch culture to the kids by organising a Dutch day, and introduce Dutch treats, arts & craft, and songs / stories. Their presence gives an additional multicultural and international element to our teaching

When asked about their internship, the girls responded, “Our internship has been a great learning process for us as Applied Psychology students. The organization provides training for teachers in different subjects and they work with personality methods to make it easier for teachers to profile the students in school. This results in a better understanding of the child’s behaviour and subsequently, in teaching the children.”

THE SIP EXPERIENCE:

talent. Roeland Diks especially piqued our interest by his proactiveness in reaching out to us expressing interest in being part of our team.”

Roeland Diks & Alpha Catalyst Consulting When Alpha Catalyst Consulting (ACC), a boutique innovation consultancy, joined MDBC as a member and first heard of the MDBC SIP Program, the company was immediately interested in bringing in interns from the Netherlands. “We believe that innovation is enhanced by collaboration and fresh perspectives. Thus, we seek fresh thinking, and diversity in

Roeland is a recent International Business Administration graduate and will next pursue MSc Marketing. According to Roeland, “I wanted to obtain more professional and personal experiences, so I started aiming for an internship in Asia. This would enable me to learn about the business environment and explore the fields of business for my upcoming MSc programme decision. The choice of ACC for me was a combination of the market that it is active in and the possible tasks and responsibilities I could obtain as ACC showed a very flexible attitude.” “ACC’s fluidity in work assignments benefitted me a lot as I gained in-depth knowledge in one particular project; together with another intern from London, and a company director, I took on responsibility for executing an open innovation (crowdsourcing) project for a large and influential government agency.

Besides daily activites in their internship, both girls were able to do observation, research and give lessons that they created. Angela focused on Positive Psychology and communication delays while Lina did her research in Emotional Intelligence and gave lessons on this subject. “The main thing we liked about working in Summer Academy is the satisfaction we get from being around the children. We are grateful for the opportunity to work here and overall, working in Malaysia has been an amazing experience for both of us”, added the girls. Being part of the project from beginning to end, from seeking potential project partners to designing study parameters and finally writing-up the report and findings, was extremely fulfilling. I was also involved in research on emerging innovation management practices and competitive landscape analysis – deepening the team’s knowledge and my thinking on business strategy and consulting.” Per the ACC team, “we wanted someone who is open-minded and who dares to ask questions, and we were not disappointed in this regard with Roeland. Furthermore, his eagerness and positive attitude made him fit well (and also enrich) our small, but fun and open team.” Alpha Catalyst is certainly satisfied with our first SIP experience. As a testament of that, we have two other interns joining us in February 2015, from different fields and different universities. We look forward to solid contributions from them in further enhancing our innovating management offerings. MDBCONNECTS · 4TH ISSUE 2014

Global Conference on Cyberspace

Rosenthal with Vice Minister of Communications and Multimedia

Mid December, former Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal had meetings in Kuala Lumpur with several stakeholders on Cyberspace, to bring the Global Conference on Cyberspace to their attention. gains in wealth and welfare in an ever more connected society. In order to be able to continue to benefit from the internet as an enabler for development and innovation, we must ensure that we develop safer ways to do business online; we need to protect people from threats to their online freedoms, from crime related activities, and we must promote international stability in the cyber domain. We are facing challenges and dilemmas in the way we secure these goals. Only by working together globally and in a multistakeholder setting can we guarantee that the most crucial piece of societal infrastructure of the 21st century will remain free, open and secure. In that way the full potential of the cyberdomain can be used.

Companies interested in growing their export in the so called economic focus countries, could sign up for a meeting with the representatives from the Netherlands Embassies of those countries. Companies in solid waste management, food innovation and machineries discussed their interest in Malaysian or wider ASEAN markets.

recent times and hence for 2015, they will be focusing on the key industry pillars that the ministry wishes to target to drive forward the green agenda. These pillars are Green Energy, Green Buildings, Green Transport, Water Technology and Waste Management.

4th Edition 2014

KUALA LUMPUR TOURISM MASTER PLAN 2015 - 2025 WITH ROLAND BERGER In 2013 the Kuala Lumpur City Hall initiated the development of a Tourism Master Plan. They approached Roland Berger Kuala Lumpur to formulate this Master Plan; a project team led by Managing Partner Anthonie Versluis and Principal Vincent Casanova, and consisting of Project Manager Ahmad Ridhwan Azizan, Senior Consultant Sulina Kaur and Consultant Zafira Azahar was quickly put together. In order to develop the Master Plan, the team first conducted a detailed diagnostic of the KL tourism industry to take stock of the city’s offerings and analyze its positioning in each segment. A benchmarking exercise was carried out with best-in-class cities to determine best practices for both tourism products and enablers. This process generated more than 200 ideas, which were drilled down to 47 detailed initiatives across nine tourism segments and key enablers. The selected initiatives focus on introducing new products, services and infrastructure, and on improving those that exist. They encompass all the main tourism

segments (culture, heritage & places of interest, shopping, entertainment, nature & adventure, luxury travel, sports, business, medical & wellness, education), as well as key enablers such as governance, standards, transportation and infrastructure. With the implementation of the Master Plan, KL’s tourism industry could almost double the number of foreign tourist arrivals to 16 million by 2025. The average length of stay is expected to increase from 3.1 nights to 5.5 nights, while the average spend per day is expected to rise from USD 190 to USD 250 by 2025. All in all, the city hopes to quadruple its tourism receipts from USD 5 billion in 2013 to approximately USD 21 billion by 2025.

Plan is already underway. Throughout 2014, the Tourism Unit of Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Roland Berger team launched selected quick-win initiatives of the Master Plan. These included five food trails to enhance the culinary experience, taxi booking terminals at attractions to improve connectivity and safety, a daily musical at a historic theatre and a guided walk at a cultural enclave. Also, student tourism ambassadors were trained and located at key tourist hotspots, and a detailed handbook for tour guides was put together to improve the consistency of the tourists’ cultural experience. Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor signs the ceremony plaque, while KL Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib (front) cheers the Minister on.

The Master Plan will also facilitate the creation of 71,000 direct and indirect job opportunities over the next ten years as well as attract an additional one billion USD in investments. Initial implementation of the Master
