In the organizational context, innovation can be linked to positive changes in efficiency, productivity, quality, competitiveness, and market share. Recent research findings highlight the complementary role of organizational culture in enabling organizations to translate innovative activity into tangible performance improvements.
Attendees were able to have roundtable discussions with each speaker for more personalized advice after the regular Q&A and an intense panel discussion. Light refreshments were available at the end of the program which provided ample opportunities for attendees to network and have further one on one discussions with the speakers.
MDBC, together with the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), CCI France Malaysia (CCIFM), and the Malaysian - German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC), organized the second edition of the 4-Chambers VIP Luncheons which link the European and Malaysian community, this time with a keynote address from the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia - Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz. Touching on topics such as the weakening ringgit, exchange rates, and its impact on trade and investments, the VIP Luncheon proved to be a valuable, successful and informative event.

HENRY GOH & CO TRENDS & BRANDS SEMINAR Henry Goh recently hosted one of their yearly public seminars, this time with a focus on trade marks. Held at the ParkRoyal Hotel on 12 August 2015 and entitled “Trends and Brands”, the said seminar was well received with almost a full house attendance. Three topics were presented with the first from Senior Legal Counsel, Azlina Aisyah Khalid, who discussed about trademarks and branding as well as the current trends seen in the market that could help local businesses and companies take their IP rights, specifically trademarks, to the next level. After a short and fruitful networking tea break, Legal Counsel Lim Eng Leong took to the stage with information on how the attendees could expand their current trade mark protection on a global platform. The topic “Trending Global with your Brand” was most informative for the attendees as
there was a lot of sharing and information provided on Malaysia’s forthcoming accession to the Madrid Protocol. Last but not least the third session covered an exposition on recent legal trade mark cases, which gave the audience an interesting spectrum on the various issues covering trade mark litigation. The half day seminar ended with a Question and Answer session. The feedback received from the participants was highly positive with favourable comments that they obtained a lot of information and knowledge from the sessions. All in, it was a highly successful event and Henry Goh remains committed to continue hosting similar ones in the future as part of its corporate responsibility to increase public awareness on the importance of intellectual property rights as a business asset.

BESI APAC WINS PRESTIGIOUS FMM EXCELLENCE AWARDS Introduced in 2010, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Excellence Award (FMMEA) is now in its 6th year. The Award recognises FMM members in the manufacturing sector for their outstanding achievements

REGUS OPENS FIRST CENTRE IN BRUNEI The demand for flexible working solutions is growing especially among young entrepreneurs, who work whenever and wherever. This is especially true in countries like Brunei, where the renewed rapid growth of the oil and gas sector is driving demand for more jobs, talent and opportunities. DMT WINS HIGH GROWTH AWARD DMT Environmental Technology recently won the Netherlands North High Growth Award 2015. Companies vye for the title of best business growth in the region. The Award is an initiative of the Port4Growth platform for growth companies and its partners Rabobank, Grant Thornton, and Philips. DMT is a fast growing Dutch company, established in Joure, The Netherlands. DMT is a worldwide leader in the upgrading of (bio) gas membrane technology. “DMT Environmental Technology shows that the growth is both qualitative and
quantitatively durable. There are many projects and processes arrested on several fronts to bring the quality of the organization to a higher level, with great success. In the United Kingdom, it has even gained the interest of HRH Prince Charles. This has also brought significant milestones in the PR field,” shared the Award jury. The company was judged on the entrepreneurial profile, the example of the role of strategy in the growth process, and must have realized at least three years of substantial revenue growth.

Earlier in 2015, world famous DAF Trucks N.V. from The Netherlands concluded an agreement with Truck World Auto Assembly (TWAA) in Port Klang, Malaysia for the marketing, sales and service activities of DAF Trucks in Malaysia. DAF Trucks has thus extended its presence in the Far East, building on its success in places such as Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong. There are more than a thousand right hand drive DAF trucks on the roads in Malaysia, imported by TWAA from the United Kingdom as used vehicles. The Malaysian importer now also wants to meet the demand for new DAF trucks.
“DAF has an extremely good reputation in Malaysia”, says Goh Tiong Guan (Managing Director, TWAA). “The level of customer satisfaction is unprecedented. DAF trucks are renowned for their quality of construction, reliability and low fuel consumption. We therefore clearly stand out from the competition when it comes to total cost of ownership,” Goh added. TWAA also has a plan to set up an assembly plant from which the ASEAN region is to be served. This investment is estimated at more than RM 150 million, which is being planned for the construction of the new plant, technical R&D, logistics, training, machinery and equipment.

This year’s theme was “Supply Chain Liability - Shared Responsibility”, a topical subject these days because supply chain integration and liability becomes more important in the outsourcing process. In addition to the initiatives in the Netherlands, Isah has been active in South Africa for more than 3 years. The Manufacturing Accelerator Program (MAP™) is a three year program which helps manufacturing companies increase their global competitiveness. In November, Isah signed a Memoranda of Agreement with MAP™, ISDA (Industrialisation Supplier Development Association) and Transnet (responsible for the freight logistics chain in South Africa), in the presence of the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The purpose
of these agreements is to work toward the common objective of promoting and developing companies to act as industrial suppliers to State Owned Companies in South Africa, stimulating manufacturing in the country. Isah was appointed to be the preferred solution to optimize the efficiency and productivity of manufacturing companies. As an MDBC member, Isah is conducting market research together with local institutions to investigate how to strengthen the Malaysian manufacturing industry.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR EUROGAIN SECTA 2015 was an interesting and rewarding year for Eurogain’s Group of Companies, particularly for Eurogain Secta Sdn Bhd. Established in 2011 as the Kuala Lumpur North Branch of the Eurogain Group of Companies, Eurogain Secta recently underwent a merger exercise as part of the company’s expansion program. In March of 2015, Eurogain Secta merged with GYH Corrporate Services. With the merger, Eurogain Secta was able to increase its presence in the Malaysian company secretarial industry and create a synergy of strengths and resources from its partners and supporting staff. The merger also allowed Eurogain Secta to gain expertise in Initial Public Offers (IPOs) for companies considering a listing on the local Stock Market. Eurogain Secta is now also serving clients who are existing listed companies. As a follow up to the very engaging session that was conducted at the MDBC HR Forum on March 29, the first exchange theatre session in Malaysia has been successfully conducted for Microsoft by the RealEx team. For 90 minutes, the whole company laughed, reflected, discussed, intervened on stage and shared their insights about 4 scenarios that were created for them, and that highlighted their specific challenges and opportunities. AN INSIDE LOOK: SEA ORGA - REMCO VONK Orga started over 40 years ago as an electrical service and maintenance company working on North Sea Offshore oil and gas platforms. While inspecting and servicing installed marine lanterns, foghorns, aviation obstruction lights, DC power systems and explosion proof electrical equipment, the company developed ideas and innovative products to improve the reliability of these systems, contributing towards enhanced safety and reducing operating expenses. After a period of more than 10 years of product development, Orga began to manufacture its own range of products in 1985. Amongst the first clients to install Orga systems were NAM (Shell / Esso) in The Netherlands, and Shell operating companies in the United Kingdom and Malaysia. Their example was soon followed by most of the major oil and engineering companies. Remco Vonk, Orga’s Business Manager Asia & Pacific, leads the Kuala Lumpur office, which is the main office for the Asian market and is the only office located outside of The Netherlands. The office has a team of 14 employees, mainly focused on Sales and Service. MDBC: Could you tell us what made Orga choose Malaysia as the location of its Asia
& Pacific office? RV: Orga has been based in Malaysia for many years already. Over the last 7 years, we started to focus more actively on the Asian market and the role of the Kuala Lumpur office. As a company, we realized that Malaysia is an interesting location as it is very centralized (all customers in South East Asia are within a relatively short travel distance), and it is easy to find good sales and service people who can communicate in several languages and understand different Asian cultures. For our business, communication is important. This ability to communicate easily and effectively with locals has led to an increase of customers; we managed to increase the turnover by 5 times over the last couple of years. The office used to have a head count of 4 people. By increasing the staff to be able to give our customers more support and by giving our employees more responsibilities, we managed to make our staff more engaged with the company and our results went up. These days, the turnover brought in by Asia plays a significant role in the total turnover of Orga. MDBC: Helping to provide for the safety of your customers is obviously a core part of the business for Orga. With the wide variety of regulations, safety and quality standards, how has this affected Orga?
RV: Explosion safety is the keyword for the products Orga supplies to the offshore, petrochemical and wind industry worldwide. Thanks to the successful introduction of new products in collaboration with regulatory bodies and customers in the last 10 to 15 years, Orga’s business can also be described as explosive; a revenue growth from 10 to almost 50 million euro’s with a growth in employees from 60 to 170 employees located in offices in The Netherlands, Malaysia, UK and Abu Dhabi. Today Orga is leading in the development and manufacturing of smart obstruction lighting, helideck lighting, navigational aids and remote power supply systems. It exports 85% of its sales to mainly Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where it has a sizable settlement. Recently, North America is also on the radar, thanks to the harmonization of international regulations for explosion protection in a new IEC standard for products in the oil & gas industry. MDBC: How do you balance the demand for innovative, efficient and cost effective products with regulatory compliance? RV: With increasing demands for the latest technology, improved safety and reduced total cost of ownership, Orga’s continuing drive for innovation has developed the very latest in cutting-edge helideck lighting, marine aids to navigation and remote power supply systems. For example, the CAP437 guidance of the UK CAA indicates the changes of the helideck light systems, including helideck status light systems, touchdown / positioning marking circle and heliport identification marking. These changes will have an impact on the industries current perimeter lights, floodlights and helideck status light. Orga can supply a system in full compliance with the new CAP437 requirements. In Asia, we see many yards building rigs, platforms, FPSOs and other vessels which needs to be active in the North Sea / UK waters. In the meantime, we can see many other countries following the UK CAA CAP437. Even here in Malaysia, Petronas has installed our system on their platforms. Therefore the demand for Circle-H systems (Stage 2 lighting) has become tremendous. At this moment, the market for UK CAA CAP437 lights is larger in Asia than in Europe.

AN INSIDE LOOK Since helicopters are landing on top of these lights frequently, the design and production of the light itself, along with the actual installation process has to be done with the greatest precision. Orga therefore works closely with a number of customers, helideck manufacturers and specialists to ensure the system installation can be done in the most correct and safest manner with specially designed tools to avoid human error as much as possible, on all the different types of decks (e.g. aluminium and steel) by our well trained, certified and Kuala Lumpur based specialized service team. Orga’s latest offshore platform marking and warning system provides not only a robust, durable and cost-effective digital solution for the demanding global offshore energy industries, but the state-of-the-art modular design also allows easy set up and maintenance while the touchscreen user interface enables full system interaction. With it the customer can control and monitor Orga’s Circle-H helideck lighting system and Orga’s LED energy efficient marine lanterns, foghorns and marine radar beacons (racon), visibility meters and photocells for automatic control during night-time or poor visibility.

RV: We have done this in a number of ways. One example is our control panels. In the past the control panels for navigational aids systems were full of separate components like print circuit boards, switches, etc.. With the new digital design, we have brought all functionalities and alarms in one simple Micro Processor Module. Depending on the number of navigational aids and other equipment linked to the control panel, we will need a number of these modules.
During a fault situation, the customer will be able to read the module through the (explosion proof) touch screen, or other devices like a laptop or remote communication systems, and from there the customer will receive an advice. If the unit needs to be replaced, it will be very easy to do by the customer themselves. For our own production and quality process, the modules will make sure we are meeting standards. By having these modules, it significantly reduces human error.

Most of our customers have made a switch to this new digital system. We feel that customers recognize the benefit and therefore are welcoming this type of system. Within Asia, we have supplied a large number of systems already. You can find our digital systems on platforms of operators like Petronas, Shell, PTT EP, CNOOC and HESS.
The benefit for customers selecting Orga for remote power systems is that the customer will have a “one stop shop solution”. Especially for some wellhead platforms, there are some customers who prefer to outsource the electrical part to a single specialized partner. Our engineering team is able to design a solar powered system (able to work in hybrid with other power sources as well) including distribution panels for areas with a limited available space like wellhead platforms. In combination with our navigational lights and helideck lights, we can optimize the system even further by giving the lowest power consumption for these type of systems.

Over the past 20 years, Big Dutchman has grown rapidly in Asia, resulting in a leading position on the Asian poultry equipment market with offices in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. For over 77 years, Big Dutchman has been engaged in the design and manufacturing of innovative and high quality systems for poultry farmers. In order to remain competitive they have broadened their product scope and engaged in new industries like the biogas and pig farming industry.
The day I defended my MSc Management thesis at Nyenrode Business Universiteit, I also attended the presentation of Jolande Jonge Poerink (SIP Manager, MDBC). Jolande explained the possibilities and benefits of doing an internship in Malaysia, and due to my lack of international work experience this appealed strongly to me. Two weeks after I emailed my CV to MDBC they were already able to arrange a Skype meeting with Big Dutchman and after a good Skype meeting, Jan Hofstede
Due to the rapid growth, Big Dutchman is faced with a lot of managerial challenges, causing interesting internship topics focussed on marketing, finance and general product strategies. My program has been focused on the possibility of doing a management traineeship after completing my internship. During my first weeks in Malaysia, I travelled around the country visiting farms in Pulau Pinang, Ipoh and Johor. This increased my understanding of the products

nity to work in a professional environment. I became independent and open-minded. I learned that material things are not as important as experiences and memories.” Jurjan van Beek, a third year Small Business & Retail Management student at The Hanze University of Applied Sciences at Groningen said, “IQI gave me the opportunity to develop my educational theory in a professional working environment and opened my eyes to the possibilities of the real estate world. I also noticed that I grew as a person, I now dare to take more risks and have gained more trust in the choices I make. It taught me that if you enjoy life and dream big, you will achieve your goals.” “Working here enabled me to further develop my professional skills. This internship taught me to be assertive, creative and open-minded. Working with a multi-cultural staff showed me how every person has their own creative ideas which can lead to amazing end results,” said Robin Biersma, a third year International Communication & Media student, schoolmate of Jurjan.

After these first weeks exploring and learning about the local market, I had a proper understanding of the products Big Dutchman sells, which made my stay in all departments easier. I got the opportunity to work in different departments: purchasing, logistics, after sales and international sales administration, which provided me with significant work experience and knowledge on how a transnational company operates. There are many great career changing opportunities available during my internship with Big Dutchman. The only small downside of my internship is the location of the Big Dutchman office, which is about an hour’s drive away from the vibrant centre of KL. This makes it difficult to live and share cost for traveling and housing with the other Dutch students. Fortunately, Big Dutchman provided me with a spacious apartment including swimming pool, gym and most importantly a car enabling me to travel easily around to the other Dutch students (if you find the time in your busy schedule with company events, dinners with colleagues, etc….). The students also commented on being a part of the MDBC internship program: “Not only did MDBC provide us with the best fitting internships, they also went beyond that by organizing networking events, teaching us about Malaysian culture, visiting our companies and being our go-to person when needed. We really enjoyed our time here in Kuala Lumpur.” IQI must take this opportunity to say thanks to MDBC for recruiting great people to Malaysia. We welcome wonderful people to join us as a big family. STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FIRST SIP “MENTOR/NETWORKING EVENING” MDBC’s Student Internship Program (SIP) continues to grow. While we are constantly monitoring and evaluating the program for all parties involved (placement companies, students, universities), MDBC considered this a good time to provide a new learning element for the group of 50 students. Themed “How to Become a Great Manager by 2025”, the students were invited to the residence of Netherlands Ambassador H.E. Harry Molenaar for an interactive session with several senior managers and professionals working in Malaysia. The program started with Jacques Hartman (Director, Business Process Excellence, Asia Pacific, CEVA Logistics and MDBC Vice Chairman) sharing his journey
of becoming a successful manager and the associated experiences. This was followed by table discussions on topics such as “You should start your career in The Netherlands / Europe rather than in Malaysia / Asia” and “You must start from the shop floor in order to fully understand the work and get respected”. Moderated by a senior manager at each table, the students had to discuss the topics (for or against) and prepare themselves for a debate against their colleagues. After a lively debate, the students had the opportunity to ask questions to the panel. Dinner and drinks followed, which of course gave more opportunity for the students to speak to all the senior managers and ask
more personal questions. But also vice versa, the managers welcomed the chance to hear from the students on their experiences in Malaysia, their recommendations for the internship program and on educational developments in The Netherlands. All agreed that this was a great initiative, to be repeated for the next intakes in 2016!

FINANCING FOR DUTCH COMPANIES IN MALAYSIA & THE REGION Having recently arrived in Malaysia as the new Head of Trade Department at the Embassy, I am always keen to learn more about the issues facing Dutch companies operating locally. One of the main issues I repeatedly hear about when I ask Dutch companies what problems they face here, is getting financing at affordable prices, and with reliable parties. If local commercial financing is available at all, costs are usually too high to make a sound business case. Not having any Dutch banks on the ground in Malaysia is definitively a big disadvantage in this respect. However, many might not be aware of the different financial instruments that the Dutch government has available. One might think that because Malaysia is on its way to becoming a developed nation, these subsidies are not available. And in most cases, this is correct; many Official Development Assistance (ODA) instruments for Dutch and local entrepreneurs, such as the SME-targeting financing scheme Dutch Good Growth Fund (DGGF), Public-Private Partnerships (FDOV for Food Security, FDW for Water - related matters, G4AW for satellite - and geodata), and LS4HD for health related business cases), and infrastructure development funds Develop2Build and DRIVE are NOT open to Malaysia - or Singapore, for that matter. I wanted to mention them here regardless, because most of these instruments are in fact available for the rest of ASEAN, so if your company does business in the region, it might still be worthwhile to explore these possibilities. So what instruments ARE available for Dutch companies in Malaysia? Not the large subsidy schemes that I mentioned before, but a number of options are still available: Mission vouchers: If your company would like to join a trade mission to Malaysia or the region, there are vouchers available to decrease your costs of participation. Starters in international business (SIB): for starters who are new to a market,
extra support in the form of missions, trade show visits, knowledge gathering / exchange and individual coaching is available. DHI (Demonstration projects, feasibility studies and preparing of investments): are interesting ways to conduct researches and studies that you would otherwise not have started, explore new markets, opportunities, build demonstration pilots, and improve your investments with help from the Dutch government. The DHI - tender will open soon and there is a limited budget available, so if your company is interested, you should contact the Embassy. Business partnerscan (BPS): If you are searching for a reliable local partner, or you have found one but would like to know just how reliable they are, you can apply for a BPS. Partners in International Business (PIB): For a consortium of Dutch companies that are active in the same sector or value chain (who want to broaden their market or expand their business), you can apply for a PIB together. Partners for Water (PvW): is the program for companies from the Dutch water sector that wish to be active abroad. PvW aims to stimulate cooperation in the water sector. It is open for Malaysia. Export credit insurances: If you are exporting large shipments to or from Malaysia, and you are not able to get insurance commercially, Atradius Dutch state business can insure, guarantee or even finance your exports. Traditionally, Atradius only insured large exports in infrastructure, shipbuilding etc. Nowadays, they also cater for smaller exports. Dutch Trade and Investment Fund: is a new instrument that is currently being developed. It aims in particular, to help Dutch SMEs finance their business (investment, trade, expansion etc.) in Malaysia when commercial financing
is not available. DTIF might make commercial financing possible again, for example by guaranteeing first losses. All interventions from the DTIF are revolving. Orange Nest: For start-ups in sustainability-related value chains, we have launched an incubator in our Embassy in Bangkok. New entrepreneurs get office space, utilities, coaching and consultancy at discounted rates. Soon the Orange Nest, and related student incubator OrangeFactory may travel to KL as well, but their services are already available, so if you are a start-up company or you have plans to become one, please get in touch with us. Of course, all of the mentioned instruments come with their own sets of terms and conditions, so please use this list as a reference only. The EU - ASEAN Forum on Food Safety, co - funded by the EU under the project “Support for EU companies in Southeast Asian markets” or SEBSEAM - M, was created to gather experts from all over Europe, ASEAN and Malaysia to engage and discuss cold chain management, shelf life of products, labelling and traceability, as well as to confer the latest scientific and industrial achievements. This annual two day event took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel from 8 - 9 December. The Forum serves as a platform to equip individuals with comprehensive and updated information on food safety and its surrounding issues. Four key
elements: traceability, shelf life, cold chain management, and labelling, were expanded on during the event through academic, policy, and operational perspectives, followed by a session of summary and conclusion. Health Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam said during his opening address that more stringent food safety regulation could help local food production Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) expand into international markets such as Europe. This is among the benefits of streamlining food safety standards between the Asean and the European Union (EU), which would also definitely improve trade, the Minister added.

Conventions, exhibitions and expositions have always drawn the interest of Malaysians at large, with attractive posters, booths, stands, banners and all other imaginable ways of advertising one’s products or services. In fact, these paraphernalia are must haves and are the lifeline of these events. But what happens to them when the ‘party’ is over? Disposed, stacked up somewhere or just destroyed - a total waste of good money spent producing them. Realizing the great potential of recycling these items for the common good of society and to fuel a healthy community and environment, the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) stepped into the picture to work their magic on these discarded items. In line with its objectives MACEOS has organised various initiatives to train, nurture and spur the MICE industry. However, realizing the enormous quantities of waste accumulated from events, MACEOS began an innovative green initiative in collaboration with a local non - governmental organisation (NGO) called Biji Biji.

They are also working to recycle other waste materials from exhibitions and events into useful items. Driving this initiative is PICO International, a Total Brand Activation company who has gained international recognition in the event management industry. PICO was voted Asia Pacific’s Best Event Agency by CEI Magazine’s Industry Excellence in Business Events Survey. The company also won the gold award in the B2B Agency Category at the Marketing Magazine’s Agency of the Year Awards in Hong Kong. Pico has received strong rankings in America’s Special Events Magazine’s 50 Top Event Companies listings, having clinched the top three spots in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Pico’s stand for Hitachi at the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference (IGEM 2014) won the Best Booth Design Award two times this year. The stand won the Best Booth Design Award in the ‘73 sq.m. and above’ category at Malaysia’s Recognising Award Winning Results Awards (rAWr Awards)
2015; and the Best Booth Design Award in the ‘above 36 sq.m’ category presented by the organisers of IGEM 2014. The green structure crafted by the Pico team embodied environmental friendliness through its amazing design and its use of the concept of energy reuse effectiveness. The stand was inspired by Prisma Geometry. “The exhibition industry is one of the highest waste producers, therefore, we feel that it is time for us to address this issue and make a commitment towards sustainable initiatives,” says Eric Ho (Director - Exhibition and Event Marketing Division of PICO International). We are studying the possibilities of expanding this initiative in the future to include more charitable organisations and garner greater support from various parties,” he adds. Eric explained that this initiative was rolled out and introduced to organisers and exhibitors at the Archidex 2015 which took place in August 2015. “We hope to garner more support in channeling exhibition and conference waste products to this CSR initiative,” Eric reiterates.

Identified as an excellent initiative to encourage corporate social responsibility (CSR) amongst MICE organisers and exhibitors, MACEOS, together with PICO International (M) Sdn Bhd, is spearheading the collection of waste materials such as tarpaulin banners and posters which are then given to Biji Biji to be recycled into shopping bags. The tarpaulin sheets and banner materials are sent to NGO production centres where single mothers and the underprivileged are recruited to sew these materials into colourful shopping bags. This CSR initiative not only brings new life to these discarded materials, but also provides MDBCONNECTS 4TH ISSUE 2015
