FAREWELL FROM THE AMBASSADOR and the quality of life. But above all, it is the people that make Malaysia special: from day one we have been received here with unknown friendliness, warmth, and hospitality. We had three beautiful and intense years here, with, as a watershed moment in the middle, the 14th General Elections; A historic moment for the country. As a diplomat, I feel very privileged to have been here to witness it. Democracy is our highest good, and free and fair elections are the backbone of democracy. On 9 May 2018, Malaysia showed us that democratic change and a peaceful transition of government is possible.
expression has considerably improved as has the space for civil society. And the government is also putting much emphasis on rebuilding and modernizing the economy, which opens many opportunities for the private sector, including Dutch companies.
Change, however, does not come overnight, and sometimes, it is a process of three steps forward, two steps back: a procession of Echternach, as we call it in The Netherlands. I have to admit that as host country to the International Criminal Court we were disappointed with the developments regarding the Rome Statute. However, we have not given up hope that Malaysia will join at a later stage. Moreover, there are many positive developments in other areas. The Malaysian government is showing a sincere commitment to curb corruption. Freedom of media and
Economically we also should not build walls, but continue to work together. The Netherlands and Malaysia share many interests in this regard. We are both highly dependent on international trade, heavily integrated in the global market. Malaysia is strategically located in the heart of the ASEAN growth region. The Netherlands in the economic heart of Europe, as gateway to the EU. We both have a clear interest in a well - functioning international trade system,
The Netherlands and Malaysia both have much to gain from an open world, with respect and tolerance for other cultures. This is something that does not come automatically. We have to keep working on mutual understanding and respect. We have to continue to build bridges, not walls.
Dear MDBC Members and Friends, After three bustling years in KL, it is time to move on and say goodbye to Malaysia. By the time this MDBConnects is published, my family and I will have already returned to The Netherlands. Saying goodbye is the hardest part of diplomatic and expat life, and all the more difficult if you are leaving a country and a people you have come to love. Malaysia has it all: the climate, the beautiful nature, the cultural and religious diversity, which is a true asset of the country, the food,

SPECIAL AGM OVER FY2018, TALK WITH MITI DEPUTY MINISTER, & LAUNCH OF THE MDBC BUSINESS DIRECTORY
MDBC members were invited to the 22nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) over Financial Year 2018, on 19 June at the Dorsett Kuala Lumpur. As always, the AGM was preceded by an informative talk and dialogue, this time with YB Dr. Ong Kian Ming (Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry). For this talk, members were encouraged to submit questions, comments, and issues for discussion prior to the event. This provided members with an opportunity to get more input from, a chance to meet with, and engage directly with the Deputy Minister, who provided frank answers to a wide variety of questions.
Guests were also treated to a special event prior to the commentment of formalities for the AGM - the launch of the MDBC Business Directory. Excitement, engagement and teamwork were high as attendees represented the entire membership and their contribution to the successful production of the Business Directory by collaborating to complete a puzzle that made up the new cover. During the formal part of the AGM, all points on the agenda were accepted. The subsequent presentation by Executive Director Marco Winter, with a recap on MDBC’s operations in 2018, and an
update on 2019 and beyond, is available for download on the MDBC website under ‘The Library’. The event wrapped up with an opportunity for all attendees to network while enjoying some dinner. For more pictures from this event, please see page 38.

MDBC STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
(SIP) SPECIAL In 2018, MDBC’s Student Internship Program (SIP) reached the milestone of coordinating its 1,000th placement of a Dutch student intern in Malaysia. Our 2019 - 1 MDBConnects edition, therefore, featured a special Inside Look interview with MDBC SIP Manager, Jolande Jonge Poerink, who described the history of SIP and provided an update on the current status of the program. She also spoke about the impact that SIP has had on the students and companies who have participated in the program. In this 2019 - 2 edition, we continue our focus on this special program with our ongoing SIP feature, this time with a message from Suerd Polderdijk, on behalf of the MDBC Board of Directors. We have also invited 2 MDBC member - companies who are active in SIP and 2 partner Universities in The Netherlands to share their experiences. Furthermore, we even managed to track down MDBC’s very first student intern: Patricia Hamid - Borghaerts, who shared a look back at her internship with MDBC in 2004. We hope you will enjoy reading all of these other SIP experiences!

Message from Suerd Polderdijk MDBC Board of Directors SIP Committee Chair MDBC’s Student Internship Program (SIP) manager Jolande Jonge Poerink used to frequently joke with me that as an MDBC Board member and chair of the SIP Committee, it was striking that my company, a Dutch SME, was not yet participating in the SIP program… So under the motto “practice what you preach”, we recently engaged our first intern. Since then, the interns we have had the honor to host have brought fresh energy, fun and multicultural interactions, creativity, and a good set of brains with time on their hands to dive deep into a specific topic. Thanks to their advice my company has opened up new markets in refining and renewable energies. I can therefore, also from my personal experiences testify, that SIP offers a great added value to all stakeholders: students, universities, inviting companies, and the 20

wider Malaysian economy. It has grown to become a standout service and cornerstone of MDBC, with well over a hundred student placements per year. Not only are we, as MDBC and the MDBC Board, proud of this highly successful program, it is also recognized as an exemplary service. You may have noticed that MDBC, as only the second Dutch business council worldwide, has achieved accreditation by NLinBusiness. SIP was one of the services acclaimed by NLinBusiness in their review. As one of MDBC’s signature services, SIP has its own MDBC Board Committee. This Committee supports the SIP team in ensuring the quality, professionalism, continuity, and growth of the SIP program. Our committee consists of both MDBC Board members as well as representatives of MDBC member companies that participate in the SIP program. The SIP team and Committee are continuously looking for additional services that
can add value to our members such as the increasingly successful “career membership”. Individuals, such as ambitious spouses, can become MDBC Career member and enjoy specific career advice, support in job - hunting, and access to the MDBC network. The successes of SIP were, and are, achieved despite some challenges along the way. Strong improvements were made in the information provided to students on living and working in Malaysia. Upon arrival in Malaysia, each intake receives an in - depth cultural briefing by MDBC and Cultural Impact. Furthermore, MDBC Visa services constantly has to be on top of immigration procedures in order to support participating SIP companies with the Professional Visit Pass visa applications. By now, more than 1,000 SIP - alumni have had inspiring experiences through SIP and have become ambassadors for Malaysia. I’m sure the stories in this SIP special will equally inspire you!

PATRICIA HAMID: 2004
COMPANY: BESI APAC MDBC: What is the main reason you hired SIP students? BESI: Dutch students bring the latest supply chain knowledge as the Universities in The Netherlands are leaders in setting up new supply chain concepts and collaboration models. The students are academically well educated, have good social skills, and are used to working in project teams with a holistic approach. We’ve changed a lot of things due to projects interns have executed. The program offers good value for money. MDBC: Can you share an anecdote about your experience with a SIP intern? BESI: One of the best financial success stories is of a student that was able to reduce the total freight costs on a monthly basis by 30% (for a total amount of RM 2.1 million) by changing the transportation to cross docking based on a mathematical model. We also have a lot of funny anecdotes. In BESI, the students drive a company owned car that they share and car pool with. With every new group of students our facility manager will warn the car lease company in advance of damage to come as new scratches and dents are for sure to be expected, as driving in Malaysia is ‘slightly’ different than driving in The Netherlands. Our interns develop a strong relationship with us. I’m still in contact with many of them, they always share their final score on their assignment with me, and sometimes also share their career advancements, or developments in their private lives. Often, we’re also a reference during job interviews. MDBC: Can you describe in one sentence what you like about SIP? BESI: It’s a very well managed program, which give good value for money, leading to excellent results.
The first intern in the MDBC Student Internship Program, Patricia Hamid interned with MDBC itself back in 2004 and was, at the time, studying International Management and Languages at Hoteschool InHolland. As part of her internship, she was responsible for customer relationship, organizing networking events, gathering feedback from members on the Business Council, and giving advice on improvements. MDBC: What were the top three things you learned during your internship here? PH: Networking, Organizing Events, and Cultural Relationships! MDBC: What did you enjoy the most about your internship experience? PH: The food! But mostly the team at MDBC really made me feel at home. I got to learn a lot and see a lot of the country while learning to work with various cultures. The nicest event I worked on was a football event with other Chambers. It really brought all cultures together from across the world. MDBC: How did the experience influence your life later on? PH: I continued to work with international organizations and only have had international roles. Working with different cultures is really a passion. After I graduated I moved into a marketing role and over the years went from assistant to Marketing Manager for Europe at FujiFilm. MDBC: Is there anything you miss? PH: The food! But I go back often so I don’t miss much. My husband is Malay so we go back to family and friends often. And no, we did not meet in Malaysia, but in the US a year before I started at MDBC. We’ve been together for 16 years and married for 11. We’ve got 2 boys of 6 and 9 years old. MDBC: What do you like about SIP? PH: As I was the first to participate in SIP, it’s nice to see to see how the program has developed over the years.
UNIVERSITY: HANZEHOGESCHOOL GRONINGEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES MDBC: How long has the University been participating in SIP? Why? HANZE: It must have been about 10 years ago that we started cooperating with MDBC. We were lucky to have met Marco Winter and MDBC. He invited us to come to Kuala Lumpur (KL) and once we paid our first visit to Malaysia we were impressed: MDBC covers almost all industries where our studies can do their internships, their network is fabulous. Working with SIP was a tailor made fit to our own business strategy. Malaysia was our first choice for Asia since it is a very important business partner of The Netherlands. People with a European passport have easy access to the country, English is widely spoken and is the business language: very helpful for the quality of the internships, people are friendly and hospitable, prices are moderate, our students feel safe in the country and they really get value for their money in living, eating, and travelling. MDBC: Can you give an example of why it’s valuable to work with MDBC? HANZE: We noticed that there is really a win - win situation: companies and organizations benefit from our students; they are really able to contribute to the companies and their improvement and success. Many of our students were an asset to the local Malaysian staff. On the other hand, our university and students benefit from the way they are able to learn in an international environment. From all 130 students we have placed in Malaysia through MDBC I would like to mention Sven Janson in particular. He decided to stay and started his own business. He took advantage of the opportunities the country offers and has become a very successful entrepreneur in KL.

AQ: Students from the Hotelschool or NHTV, who are very hands - on, have helped us with various initiatives such as the setup of the Community Management systems, organizing awesome monthly drinks, and also bringing the theories learned at school into practice at our organization. All of this has helped us improve our service towards mystery shoppers.
The Hague goes back to 2009 but we became a member in 2011. SIP offers good support for finding a (management) internship in KL. Besides connecting students with international companies, they also offer assistance with the visa process. From the moment our students arrive in KL they are part of this bigger network of students from different universities, which is a great start to their stay in Malaysia. Malaysia is a big melting pot and I always explain it to the students as being the best of both worlds; you can find a lot of different Asian cultures in a vibrant city with lovely food and great traditions. AQ: A program that allows students to experience an overseas adventure and powerful learning opportunity while providing companies with great quality interns that generate lots of fun and energy.
local rules and regulations, and they are in close contact with the Embassy and immigration office. Throughout the years, we have exchanged our own connections in the hospitality industry in KL with the network via MDBC, resulting in our students being able to choose from an even bigger variety of placements. It’s really valuable that we can always ask MDBC for extra local support when needed, especially in case of calamities, or when a student needs specific medical care. Our students are always enthusiastic about the personal support, but especially the activities and events MDBC organises for all students from different universities. For example, a cultural dinner, or the annual hockey tournament stand out. MDBC’s SIP is a great start to gaining work experience in Malaysia; their service is very quick and always approachable.
STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM MAXGRIP The SIP Experiences of Teun van Leuveren at MaxGrip. As an Industrial Engineering and Management student at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands, Teun van Leuveren was looking to write a business development thesis at a company that operates on a global level so that he could learn about working in an international business environment. MDBC member MaxGrip, a global player in Asset Performance Management (APM), was therefore a great match for Teun’s ambitions. This Dutch company has its headquarters in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and offices in
the USA, Malaysia, Australia, Germany, Taiwan, and Singapore. “I wanted to be able to make my internship count, my thesis results should contribute to the success of an international company. When I talked to my friends who have done an internship through MDBC’s SIP, they all recommended it for gaining international work experience; I was immediately sold. They told me Malaysia is the place that offers the exact things that I was looking for: a growing economy with a lot of opportunities, a good quality of living, and the possibility for an adventure.” Teun’s internship is in business development and his primary task is to write a thesis about the positioning of the future long - term strategy for MaxGrip. According to Mark Wevers (HR Business Partner, MaxGrip Malaysia), “For more than five years we have welcomed students at our Malaysia office. We believe that the student’s open mindset contributes in a positive way to the diversity of the teams, creating fresh and enlightening ideas. For MaxGrip, it is important that students learn more than just the curriculum of
their study, doing an internship in Malaysia, and especially at MaxGrip gives you the opportunity to take in an international work environment, learn to apply cross cultural communications, and more.” Mark adds, “The assignment we have Teun is challenging for a third - year student. This is not only because the APM market keeps changing rapidly, but also because it is a complex field of work. However, as we expected, Teun is a quick learner and is really motivated to add value to MaxGrip’s strategy by completing a qualitative report with good recommendations for us to put into practice.” MaxGrip finds it has a corporate responsibility to prepare the next generation of young people for working life. MaxGrip Malaysia has been very satisifed with the students that are placed by SIP so far; the program is a good bridge between the company’s Dutch roots and MaxGrip Malaysia’s office. Teun concludes, “I am almost finished with my internship and I can say that Malaysia and MaxGrip have exceeded my expectations, the economy is fascinating and the APM market is a great challenge.”

NETHERLANDS EMBASSY NEWS
Waste Management (Mission & IGEM) easily converted into bioenergy. Coupled with rapid urbanization in the region and exponential increases in municipal waste, an acute interest in Waste - to - Energy (WTE) solutions is developing. The Netherlands has been one of the pioneers in waste - to - energy since the 1960s, which has resulted in many Dutch corporates acquiring vast experience in developing and operating waste separation, recycling, processing, gasification, and incineration plants.
Over the last three decades, Malaysia has experienced significant changes in its energy situation. The nation has managed to transform its energy mix from being almost totally oil dependent to a more diversified mix of oil, gas, coal, and hydro; Recently, renewable energy joined the league. Between the years 2005 and 2015, the generation of municipal solid wastes (MSW) has increased by more than 60%. In 2015, 23,000 tonnes of waste was produced each day in Malaysia and this amount is expected to rise to 30,000 tonnes by the year 2020. In the central and southern regions of Malaysia, 36.73% of waste are household waste, 28.34%
are industrial and construction waste, and 34.93% of waste comes from other sources. The amount of waste generated continues to increase due to the growing population and continued economic development. The most preferred current disposal method of MSW in Malaysia is landfilling. The national recycling estimates range from 10% to 17.5%, which is comparatively low when contrasted to a country like The Netherlands (80%). There is a lack of sufficient integration of MSW management in Malaysia in the waste management chain. Since Malaysian MSW contains a high volume of organic matter, it is highly biodegradable and AVR Duiven waste to energy plant Duiven, The Netherlands Photo by CEphoto, Uwe Aranas
The vision of the Dutch government for their country is to switch to a 100% circular economy by the year 2050. The Netherlands has also developed a large waste-development services and knowledge industry, ranging from engineering services to logistical support and handling management. This provides a comparative advantage for the Dutch within a global setting. Tapping on this opportunity, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and The Netherlands Embassy in Malaysia are organizing a Waste Management Mission with the aim of linking waste management companies from The Netherlands with the Malaysian waste management sector. We are looking at potential business collaborations and technology transfers between the two countries. This mission coincides with the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2019 in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 9th to 11th October 2019. During the Waste Management Mission and IGEM 2019, various events have been planned as such B2B matchmaking, a seminar with Dutch waste management expert Herman Huisman, and an exhibition at the Dutch Pavilion. MY in NL ASEAN BUSINESS FORUM 2019 Five ASEAN Embassies based in The Hague (Thailand, as the current chair of ASEAN for 2019, together with Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam), organized the ASEAN Business Forum 2019 in The Hague on 24 June. This event was organized in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO - NCW), and MKB Nederland. Hans de Boer, President VNO - NCW, was the Forum’s moderator. The primary aim of the ASEAN Business Forum 2019 was to inform the Dutch business community of the opportunities that ASEAN has to offer. With an interesting mix of session - topics related to the theme “Advancing Partnerships for Sustainabili-
ty: Business Opportunities in ASEAN”, and through 3 breakout sessions on Connectivity, Innovation, and Sustainability, that aim was widely achieved. Each Embassy had its own Trade and Investment representatives to present the latest developments that are undertaken in the AEC to further economic integration, and informed the audience on the opportunities and benefits of the five ASEAN Member States.

FOREWORD CON’T
enshrined in a well - functioning international legal order. We can reinforce each other in this respect, bilaterally and in the EU / ASEAN context. In this regard I hope we can start working on the EU / ASEAN Strategic Partnership and – finally - relaunch the negotiations on an EU - Malaysia Free Trade Agreement. Last year, The Netherlands was once again the third largest foreign direct investor in Malaysia and the 12th largest export destination for Malaysia worldwide. There is still a significant trade surplus for Malaysia: in 2018 The Netherlands exported around €1.1 bln to Malaysia, with a Malaysian export of €6.8 bln to The Netherlands. Over 200 Dutch companies, organisations, and entrepreneurs are already active in Malaysia. At the same time, an increasing number of Malaysian companies from across a wide range of sectors such as Oil and Gas, Agri - Food, E&E, and Maritime Technology, are looking to The Netherlands to find business partners or as a hub for their European operations. And there are many opportunities for further cooperation: for example, in the field of higher education, health care, agriculture, and water and waste management. In the past years we put much emphasis as an embassy – together with MDBC - on
innovation and sustainability. I am convinced that these will remain crucial themes in the years to come. We will have to deal with the effects of climate change, rising global demands for food, agricultural products and water, and growing competition for limited natural resources. These challenges can only be met if we opt for sustainable development and if we work together across borders. In the past three years I have met many wonderful young Malaysian people who are very committed to this goal. I also met many other organizations and people in Malaysia who are actively engaged in these areas, NGOs, wildlife protection organisations, forestry departments, universities, and businesses alike. I hope that we will continue to strengthen our political and economic ties, and work together in all of these areas to meet future global challenges and safeguard a sustainable future for our planet and for future generations. I am now going back to the country of tulips and bicycles. In the past few years, I have tried to promote cycling here in Malaysia as well. I am pleased to see that bikes and bike lanes are slowly appearing in the streets of KL. Melaka has announced its intention to introduce car free zones in the historical city center. I do hope we can continue to promote cycling as the most sustainable - and healthy -
means of transport. In my new job, as Director Asia Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, I will stay closely connected to this beautiful region and frequently return this part of the world. I can assure you that I will continue to promote and try to make use of KL as a hub to the wider region as much as possible. Not only because – and I have said this many times in the past few years – I truly believe that Malaysia has everything it takes to make a perfect gateway to ASEAN and the Asia Pacific, but also because Malaysia has gotten under my skin and into my heart, and KL will always be a kind of home to me. Let me finish by thanking the MDBC Board, all the members, and Marco and his team for the great and pleasant cooperation in the past few years. I am proud that MDBC recently became the second business chamber in the world to receive an accreditation by NLinBusiness and I am sure the excellent cooperation will continue in the years to come. Thank you all. Terima kasih semua, terima kasih Malaysia untuk segala - galanya! H.E. Karin Mössenlechner Netherlands Ambassador Honorary Member of the MDBC Board
