FOR TAKEOFF

When you visit the home of Canada’s largest fighter base, you know you’ll see some planes — way up high and down low on display.

This year, there will be even more aircraft than usual, with the bi-annual Cold Lake Airshow happening July 16 and 17. As always, the CF-18 demo jet and Snowbirds will be on hand. Keep an eye on coldlakeairshow.com for lineup updates, ticket sales, and more.

Outside of the airshow, your best bet for seeing military aircraft landing and taking off is at the 4 Wing Cold Lake Viewing Area, located near the back gate of 4 Wing Cold Lake.

Bring a picnic to make an afternoon of it. Be sure to check out the displays that tell the story of the base’s history.

Want even more? Check out the static displays located around the City of Cold Lake and 4 Wing. At the main downtown intersection in the city, you’ll find a Starfighter (CF-104) and a Tutor (CT-114 – the same plane the Snowbirds use).

On your way into the base, just before the main gate, you’ll find a Freedom Fighter (CF-5), a Silver Star (CT-133), and Canada’s current fighter – the Hornet (CF-18).

At HQ Park, you will find a different CF104, another CT-133 Silver Star (which is also known as a T-Bird), a CF-100 (Canuck), and a CF-101 (Voodoo). Across the street you’ll find the C-47, aka Pinocchio. Another Starfighter can be found outside of the Art Smith Aviation Academy.

Still not satisfied? Be sure to check out the other static displays at the Cold Lake Air Force Museum, before going inside to find the radar station and other unique parts of Cold Lake’s history.

See the museum’s Facebook page or website below for more information on hours and special events. Located on Highway 28 North, east of the Tri-City Mall.
