#TakeItToTheLake | Bonnyville & Cold Lake

Cold Lake Provincial Park

Those are words we live by during the summer in the Bonnyville /Cold Lake region. When you #TakeItToTheLake, your worries fall away, life slows down, and the sun is the only thing you need to tell time.

Live your lake life here – two days, two weeks or two months. We have the water. Choose your moments. All that’s missing is you.

Relax. Breathe. Listen.

SEASONAL CAMPGROUNDS

M.D. Seasonal Campgrounds

FISHING

REEL THEM IN! Cold Lake is the big draw in our region. The gigantic Kinosoo might be out of reach, but there are lots of large Lake Trout, Walleye and Jack being reeled in. The fish are plentiful in our catch-and-release lakes, so you’ll be working the reel during an afternoon trip. You are guaranteed a good fight. Wolf Lake is teeming with Walleye – just remember to apply for your tags.

Guided Fishing Tours Brian Hamilton of Hamilton House - A Woodland Oasis Inn and Adventures knows all the secret spots on Cold Lake. He charters from late May to mid-September. Half or full-day fishing packages with all the fishing gear, snacks and drinks, or lunch supplied. Travelling on an 18-foot, soft-top Glastron (May and June only for Pike and Walleye) or a 24-foot Bayliner, hard-top (full cabin) May to September for Lake Trout and Pike. Perfect for various group sizes or experience. facebook.com/woodlandoasis www.hamiltonhouse.com (Under Activities tab – Fishing Charters) Email: hamiltonhousebb@gmail.com 780.594.7257 or 780.812.8015

Moose Lake Provincial Park provides plenty of wildlife action on its six km of trails. Walk or ride along the 10 km Wetlands Trail around Jessie Lake, which borders the Town of

Bonnyville. Bird and wildlife sightings are plentiful. Vezeau Beach Trail starts on the west side of Bonnyville at the intersection of 66 St. and Township Road 611A. The paved trail is seven kilometres long, and takes you through a tunnel under Highway 28 to Vezeau Beach and Moose Lake. Then go east on the paved North Shore Heights Trail, which goes all the way north to the intersection with the multiuse Iron Horse Trail, and ends at Highway 660.

Newly constructed last fall, Phase I of the Mountain Bike Park (bottom picture) surrounding the Cold Lake Museum has six km of trails. It contains year-round, multi-user (non-motorized), single track, mountain bike trails, with Phases II and III bringing on a skills park and jump features. Nature lovers always enjoy Cold Lake Provincial Park’s excellent 11.5 km trail system for hiking and mountain biking. For a more urban setting, the 12 km paved Millennium Trail takes you through the City of Cold Lake and into 4 Wing. The trail also connects to the Heritage Trail along the lakeshore.

MUSEUMS

Bonnyville & District Museum The most striking feature of the Bonnyville Museum is the seven-metre high, hand-carved statue, of fur trader Angus Shaw, who explored western Canada in the late 1700s. On site are two churches, an expansive hospital exhibit, and the 1789 North West Company Trading Post. Artifacts include early agricultural and industrial equipment such as restored tractors, welding and woodworking tools. The main building houses a military and RCMP display and a working display of post-war Lionel model trains. The Clementine Poitras collection of folk-art miniatures is stunning. 4 Wing Cold Lake

COLD LAKE AIR SHOW For two days in July, planes of all vintage and nationality will streak across the sky. The Cold Lake Air Show, July 18 & 19, promises to be the event of the year. The US Navy Blue Angels are the featured guests. This is the only show they will be performing at in Canada. The Snowbirds show will be top notch as they are celebrating their 50th Anniversary. The CF-18 Demonstration team and the Sky Hawks Parachute Team are also slated to perform. The weekend starts with the Full Throttle Festival in downtown Cold Lake. Book your tickets at www. coldlakeairshow.com If you can’t make it to the Air Show, on any weekday you can visit the 4 Wing Cold Lake Viewing Area to watch military aircraft taxi down the runway during takeoff and landing. Located near the back gate of 4 Wing Cold Lake, there is a picnic area for public use, featuring information boards about aircraft and the story of the base.

BIRDS OF THE BOREAL

WATER AND BOREAL FOREST. That’s the perfect formula for a birdwatcher’s paradise. Early mornings are the best time to spot the winged beauties of the boreal. The gloriously lit photos of Norm Dyrvik, whose work has been gracing our adventure pages for years, speak to that fact. He catches all of these majestic birds in their plumed glory. The red eyed Loon breaking the water’s surface after a brief plunge for snacks. A squadron of Pelicans conversing and wading along the lakeshore. A Turkey Vulture searching for prey. A Grebe playing in the reeds. A Merganser protecting its young. And an Eagle in full flight. Muriel Lake, Moose Lake Provincial Park, Franchere Bay and Pelican Point recreation areas offer excellent boreal forest and wetland habitats. Jessie Lake, in the Town of Bonnyville, is a shallow wetland home to a variety of bird life. Walk the path around the lake to check off species on your list. Ethel Lake is one of Alberta’s most reliable count areas for the provincially uncommon Yellow Rail and Sedge Wren. Cold Lake is an entry point for neo-tropical migratory birds such as Wood Warblers. In late May and early June, Cold Lake Provincial Park is the destination for birders looking for the possibility of marking up to 23 warbler species off their lists. The fall migration through late July and Grebe August draws a repeat crowd.

Juvenile Eagle

Cold Lake easily accommodates one of Alberta’s largest Western Grebe colonies, and a spill-over population of Pelicans, Cormorants and Gull species. The occasional Blue Heron often swoops overhead. Over 292 species of birds can be found in the region, which is within the transition zone between Alberta’s aspen parkland and the northern boreal forest. COLD LAKE

CHARM

The best view in Cold Lake is from the Marina breakwater. You might catch a glimpse of the “big fish” – the Legend of the Kinosoo that the Dene Suline believe lurks in the depths of the lake. There are several restaurants along the lakeshore, or just a block away. Grab an ice cream after your walk on Heritage Trail and take a rest on the boardwalk. Marina Mall is just up the street where you can stock up on all the necessities. Just west of the marina is Kinosoo Beach. A three-block stretch of fine sand, named one of the top 25 beaches in Canada. A splash park, zip line, basketball and beach volleyball courts, playground, and some classic burgers help break up the long summer day. Downtown Cold Lake offers a unique shopping experience. There is a children’s clothing store with top brand names, the best lingerie boutique in Alberta and three second-hand shops with bargain prices. A must sample item is the famous beef jerky from Hamel’s Meats just off main street, as it was taken into space by one of our Canadian astronauts.

Lakefront B&Bs Lake views are the specialty of two of our Bed and Breakfasts. The Waterfront Harbour was recently awarded the Best Boutique Bed and Breakfast in Alberta by LUXLife Magazine. Choose from five unique rooms, including the Hideaway Room, which has its own private entrance, the Aurora Lakeview Room, decorated in the colours of the dancing night lights and a beautiful view of Cold Lake. 607 Lakeshore Drive facebook.com/WaterfrontHarbourBandBCold Lake www.waterfrontharbour.ca 780.654.2132 The Lakeshore Inn offers relaxation and romance in 18 luxurious rooms with queen beds and quality linens.
