Elias Elston and Elizabeth Davey (married 1814, Sandford, Devon) Elias Elston was born on 7 Apr 1787 and baptised a week later on 15 Apr in Upton Hellions, a hamlet on the edge of the parish of Sandford in Devon. His father John Elston is so far unidentified with certainty; he may have been the John Elston bapt. in Sandford on 8 Nov 1741, son of John and Elizabeth. He married Susanna Drake, a widow, in Sandford on 2 Jul 1778. He died before 1790. Elias's mother was born Susanna Baker, bapt. on 24 Feb 1744/45 in Sandford, the daughter of Robert and Susanna Baker. On 11 Feb 1766 in Sandford she had married John Drake, and they had 6 children before John died. They had been married about 10 years. In 1778 she married John Elston, and had 3 more children before he also died. Susanna herself died in 1794, and was buried 13 Jul 1794 in Sandford. Elias had a older sister Mary bapt. 25 Sep 1780 in Sandford, and an older brother John bapt. 14 Aug 1785 in Sandford (John married Ann Tucker 17 Mar 1810 in Sandford, and they had 9 children). He also had 3 half-brothers and 3 half-sisters, the children of his mother and John Drake. It is something of a mystery why Elias was baptised in nearby Upton Hellions when all his family had been baptised in Sandford, and he was certainly living in Sandford with his mother and siblings in 1790-1793 until his mother died. Was this connected with his father's death soon after (or perhaps even before) Elias was born? After Elias Elston and his brother John were orphaned by the death of their widowed mother in 1794, they appear to have been taken in by James and Sarah Tucker, who lived at one of the Henstill farms to the north of Sandford, and with whose family they were living in 1800 (ref: Sandford parish census). Elias's brother John later married the youngest daughter of the family, Ann Tucker. Sarah was also an Elston by birth, the daughter of John and Christian Elston. [She appears not, however, to be the boys' aunt, as some have supposed; her brother John died in 1811, so he cannot be the husband of Susanna and father of Mary, John and Elias.] Elizabeth Davey (also known as Betty) was baptised in Sandford on 5 Jun 1792, the daughter of John Davey & Elizabeth Bowden who were married in Sandford on 5 May 1783. She seems to have been their only child; in the Sandford parish census of 1790, they have no children; and in 1793 and 1800 only Elizabeth is with them. (Also with them in 1800 was Elizabeth's widowed grandmother, Sarah Bowden nĂŠe Lee.) Elias Elston and Elizabeth Davey, both of Sandford, were married on 13 Jun 1814 in the parish church, St Swithun's. Their first child, a daughter, was christened Elizabeth almost exactly a year later, on 11 Jun 1815 in Sandford, and a further 9 children were born over the next 20 years, all baptised in the parish church at Sandford. They were probably a poor family: Elias was an agricultural labourer, and Betty was a weaver; their older children were apprenticed away from home by the time they were 10 years old, probably to relieve the burden and expense of the children following. In their retirement Elias and Betty lived in one of the almshouses on Church Street in Sandford, where Elias, a labourer all his life, tended the gardens. He is believed to have died in 1864 after 50 years of marriage, and his widow five years later in 1869. Research by Michael Elston, with thanks to Judith Thomas and Angela Perkins; all errors and omissions are my responsibility. [Michael and Judith are Elias Elston's great-greatgreat-grandchildren.]

Descendants of Elias and Elizabeth Elston. Notes: All places mentioned below are in Devon, England unless otherwise specified. nfi = no further genealogical information (excepting maybe census data) RD = Registration District [20th century generations are not included] Note on surnames: The family surname is found at various times, and inconsistently, spelled in records as Elston, sometimes Elstone and occasionally Elson. In what follows, the name is consistently spelled Elston when in the records of people concerned it is sometimes spelled 'Elston' and sometimes otherwise; but I have used the spelling 'Elstone' where, as far as I can tell, that person's name was always spelled thus (except perhaps occasionally in census records). 1. Elizabeth Elston, bapt. 11 Jun 1815 in Sandford, was apprenticed at the age of 10 in 1826 to Elias Tremlett, yeoman of Sandford. By the time of the 1841 census she was in service, probably the Eliza Elstone living in as a servant in the Dymonds household at Snows in Sandford Village, or perhaps the Eliza Elstone, a servant in the house of Betsy Tremlett on the High Street in Crediton. Elizabeth apparently formed a liaison with William Smale, a Sandford carpenter a couple of years her junior, which resulted in 1843 in the birth of a son, named William. The couple did not marry — William Smale was still at home working with his father (also a carpenter) in 1851, and only married some years later. He did, however, present himself with Elizabeth to register the child's birth. A single mother with a child was in a difficult situation in those days. Elizabeth appears to have sought anonymity in service in Exeter, and had the good fortune to meet, and on 6 Jan 1846 to marry, George Gidley (born 1808 in Spreyton, son of William and Wilmot Gidley), recently widowed, who had a small farm at Brays, Heavitree. It was probably a convenience to both — George needed a mother for the six young children aged 10 and younger left him by his wife's death, and Elizabeth needed a father for her son. Her son grew up a Gidley, and appears only to have reverted to his legal surname Elston when he left Devon 20 years later. In addition to her son (and being stepmother to George's children by his first wife, also named Elizabeth), Elizabeth bore George Gidley a further seven children, three of whom however died in childhood. After George died in 1871 she lived a further 20 years at Ducke's Almshouses in Heavitree before she was buried with her husband in 1891. Elizabeth's son by William Smale was: 1.1 William Smale Elston, born 17 Apr 1843 in Sandford. In the 1851 and 1861 censuses William is listed as Samuel Gidley, which may well have been the name he was known by as George Gidley's son (for George already had a son named William). In 1861, still known as Samuel Gidley, he was working on George Shapland's farm, Winslade Farm in Clyst St Mary, and was listed in the census as having been born in Heavitree. 5 years later, perhaps after discovering his true identity, he had left Devon and we find him in Islington, Middlesex, now calling himself William Elstone, a gardener working on a large market garden on the Balls Pond Road. In Islington, on 6 Jul 1866, William married Martha Hose (born 21 Oct 1837 in Walworth, Surrey, one of 12 children of William Hose and Charlotte French who were married in 1821 in Southwark). When he married, William Elstone stated that his father was George, a farmer. In the 1881 census, he was still saying he had been born in Heavitree, but by 1901 he correctly stated that he had been born in Sandford. After their marriage, William and Martha seem to have moved around Middlesex and Essex in search of work for William as a gardener. In 1871, for a

while, they had a small grocer's shop on the Mile End Road, but this appears not to have been a success, for they were not long in Mile End. A few years later William was gardening again, this time on the estate of Belmont Castle in Grays, Essex. Finally in the late 1870s they settled in South London to bring up their family in East Dulwich, in the fast-growing Victorian development of Camberwell, Surrey, where William worked the rest of his life as a gardener on his own account. William died in East Dulwich on 7 Oct 1922, just 6 months after his wife Martha. They had been married for 55 years. Note: Although his birth certificate spells his name Elston, William consistently used the spelling Elstone when he married, and when registering the births of his first 5 children. By the time his family settled in South London, he appears to have reverted to the spelling Elston, and his youngest child's birth was registered thus; he and his children have used this standard spelling ever since. William and Martha Elston had 6 children: 1.1.1 Frederick William Charles Elston, born 22 Apr 1867 in Hornsey, Edmonton, London; he was married on 27 Sep 1891 to Elizabeth Jane Bingham (born 1864 in Bilsington, Kent, dau. of George and Martha Bingham); Frederick died in 1943 and Elizabeth in 1949. Frederick and Elizabeth had 5 children: 1.1.1.1 Frederic George Eustace Elston, born 25 Jun 1892 in Fulham, London; in 1912 Frederic married Florence Townsend (born 1892 in Camberwell, London). Frederic and Florence had a large family of 11 children; Florence died in Camberwell in 1967, and Frederic in 1980. 1.1.1.2 Alice Lilian E Elston, born 1894 in Hammersmith, London; she died aged 14 in Camberwell in 1908. 1.1.1.3 Dorothy Ethel P Elston, born 1900 in Peckham, London; married in 1922 in Camberwell to Leonard Cartwright (born in 1891 in Gainsborough. Lincs, son of Frederick and Jane Cartwright), and I believe they had 2 sons. Leonard died in Camberwell in 1969, and Dorothy in 1976 in Lewisham. 1.1.1.4 Aubrey Cecil C Elston, born 1903 in Hampstead, London; he died aged 12 in Wandsworth in 1915. 1.1.1.5 Raymond Harold B Elston, born 1906 in Camberwell, London; in 1929 in Camberwell he married Rosina Maud White (born 1907 in Camberwell) and they had one daughter. Raymond died in Lancashire in 1987, and Rosina in Somerset in 1997. 1.1.2 George Joseph Elston, born 28 Jan 1869 in Islington, London; married on 7 May 1892 in Camberwell, London to Charlotte Sheath. George died at the age of 38 on 25 Apr 1907 in East Dulwich, and in 1909 Charlotte was married again to Edward Stanley Richer, a widower with two children. She died in Camberwell in 1925. George and Charlotte had one son: 1.1.2.1 George Walter Elston, born 13 Apr 1894 in East Dulwich, London; married in 1916 in Camberwell to Ellen Brooks, and they had one son. George died in 1963 in Croydon. 1.1.3 William Alfred Elston, born Dec 1870 in Mile End, London; he died aged 1 year in Lewisham, Kent in 1872. 1.1.4 Emmeline Mary Elston, born 10 Jan 1875 in Belmont Castle Lodge, Grays, Essex; married on 26 Dec 1893 in St Clement's Church, Camberwell, London to Charles Francis Payne (born 27 Mar 1875 in Mile End, London, son of Charles Francis Payne and Sophia Needs who married 4 Oct 1874 in Stepney Parish Church, London). Charles and Emmeline both died in 1954 in Surrey. Charles and Emmeline had 6 children:

Babs died in 1995, and Charles in 1998. 1.1.4.6 Winifred V Payne, born 1913 in Camberwell, London; she married Miles Johnson and had 2 children. 1.1.5 Sidney Albert Elston, born 14 Jul 1876 in Grays, Essex; married on 14 Apr 1900 in Camberwell, London to Lydia Charlotte Ryan (born 12 Dec 1879 in Camberwell, Surrey, dau. of Benjamin Ryan and Lydia Jones). Sidney was a bricklayer; he and Lydia had 2 sons, and just a year after the birth of his second son, in 1907, Sidney left home and sailed for New Zealand. Nothing is known yet about the reason for his departure, nor what happened to him thereafter. By 1910 , Lydia was living with Frank Chalk (born Walworth, Surrey, c. 1863, son of William and Hester Chalk), calling herself Lydia Chalk, and had 3 sons by him before Frank died in 1915 while they were living in Greenwich. Lydia returned with her four young sons to Camberwell, where she died aged 39 on 13 Mar 1919. Sidney and Lydia's sons were: 1.1.5.1 Sidney Benjamin Elston, born 13 Jan 1901 in East Dulwich, London; he died at the age of 10 in his grandparents' home in Dec 1911. 1.1.5.2 William Ernest Elston, born 13 Jul 1906 in East Dulwich, London; he was married in 1949 to Nora Bagguley and had 2 children. As far as I can discover, they had no children. Elizabeth and George Gidley's children were: 1.2 George Gidley, baptised 25 Oct 1846 in Heavitree; in 1873 in St Thomas RD he married Eliza Glanville (bapt. 14 May 1848 in Clyst Honiton, dau. of William and Anne Glanville); George was a gardener: in 1881 he had 7 acres of his own, but later he worked for others; George was living in Withycombe Raleigh in 1891, and in 1901 he was a domestic gardener living in in Littleham. He died in 1916, and Eliza in 1923.

2. Elias Elston, bapt. 16 Mar 1817 in Sandford; in 1826, at the age of 9, he was apprenticed like his sister to Elias Tremlett, yeoman. In mid 1840 in Crediton he married Mary Ann Chudleigh (or Chudley) (baptised 14 Feb 1819 in Crediton, dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth Chudleigh). Elias was a farm labourer and waggoner; in 1861 they were living in Cheriton Fitzpaine, near Uppincott, Shobrooke; by 1871 they had moved to Crediton, where they appear to have lived at Blagdon Place, where Elias died, aged 71, in 1888, and his wife Mary Ann was still in the same house in 1891, next door to her daughter Mary Ann Ashplant; she died aged 80 in 1899. Note: Elias and his children are among those Elstons who spelled their name predominantly (though not consistently) Elstone. By the end of the 19th century, most of his descendants did so, and it is likely therefore that this may have continued into the the 20th century and to the present day. In 1881, Elias and Mary Ann had two children visiting them, both born in India, one of whom was John Elston, aged 3. So far it is a mystery who this was. Elias and Mary Ann had 4 children: 2.1 John Chudley Elston, born 8 Dec 1840 at Mills Cotts, Shobrooke; he seems to disappear after leaving home sometime between 1851 and 1861 (he appears to have been in the Army); in 1881 he was working as Lower Gate Porter at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, listed as a widower, so it appears he had already been married; later that year in Barton Regis, Gloucs, he married Sarah Lane (born c.1840), who bore him 2 sons and died in 1890; almost immediately John married again, in Bristol in 1890, to Mary Haggett nĂŠe Harris (born c.1842 in Bristol; Mary had married Samuel Haggett in 1867 in Bristol, and they had 2 children; Samuel died in 1887); John was by this time an Army Pensioner, and in 1901 he was also working at the Bristol County Court; he died in Bristol aged 73 in 1914. Though baptised in the name of Elston, most of his life John spelled his surname and that of his children Elstone, though interestingly his death was registered as Elston. John and Sarah Elston had the following children: 2.1.1 Claude Lane Elstone, born 1882 in Bristol, Gloucs, still unmarried and living with his father and stepmother in 1901, nfi 2.1.2 John William Elstone, born 1883 in Bristol, Gloucs, still unmarried and living with his father and stepmother in 1901; he appears to have married in Bristol in 1906, nfi 2.2 Elias Elston, born c.Jun 1843 in Sandford; apprenticed to a shoemaker, he moved to Bristol, and became a policeman. In 1868 in Bristol, Gloucs he married Mary Ann Rachel Greenland (known sometimes as Rachel and sometimes as Mary Ann, she was born 1841 and baptised 2 Jan 1842 in Buckland Dinham, Somerset, dau. of John and Grace Greenland); they lived first at 11 Sydenham Terrace, Bristol, then at 20 Princes St, Bristol St Paul; Elias died in Bristol in 1924, aged 81, and his wife probably in 1936, aged 94. Though registered at birth as Elias Elston, through most of his life Elias spelled his surname and that of his children Elstone, and his descendants have continued to do so. Elias and Mary Ann had at least 8 children: 2.2.1 Emily Grace Elstone, born 1869 in Bristol, Gloucs; in 1881 she was living with her parents aged 12, and by 1901 she was in London, in service as a nurse in the household of Robert Donner, a leather merchant, in Knightsbridge, and was still in service as a nurse in 1911, now im Hampstead; she may have married later that year, nfi 2.2.2 Arthur Elstone, born 1870 in Bristol, Gloucs; in 1891 he was living with his parents aged 20, an apprentice shop fitter; he was married in 1895 in Bristol to Emily Florence Loxton (born 1870 in Bristol, Gloucs, dau. of George Loxton and his 2nd wife Ann Morgan who married in 1862), and in 1901 and 1911 they were living in Bristol with their children; Arthur was a carpenter and Emily a schoolteacher. Emily

appears to have died in Bristol aged 43 in 1913, nfi Arthur and Emily had 3 children: 2.2.2.1 Olive Florence Marjorie Elstone, born 1897 in Bristol, Gloucs, nfi 2.2.2.2 Leslie Arthur Elstone, born 1899 in Bristol, Gloucs, nfi 2.2.2.3 Donald James Elstone, born 1905 in Bristol, Gloucs 2.2.3 Harry Elstone, born 1872 in Bristol, Gloucs; may have married in 1904 in Bristol RD, Gloucs; may have died in Devon in 1947 aged 75, nfi 2.2.4 Frederick Elstone, born 1874 in Bristol, Gloucs; in March 1901 he was still living at home, unmarried at 27, a Post Office filing clerk and telegraphist; later that year in Keynsham he married Alice Maria Cardy Woolford (born 1878 in Cheltenham, Gloucs, daughter of James Woolford and Mary Ann Cardy who married in Cheltenham in 1877). Frederick and Alice had one son, Maurice James. 2.2.5 Rachel Elstone, born 1877 in Bristol, Gloucs; in 1901 she was in service in Banwell, Somerset; and in 1903 she married her cousin Henry Edward Greenland in Bristol (he was born in 1877 in Trowbridge, Wilts, the son of Rachel's mother's brother Henry Greenland and his wife Ann). Henry and Rachel had 5 children. 2.2.6 Minnie Elstone, born 1880 in Bristol, Gloucs; in 1901 she was still living at home, 21 and unmarried, nfi 2.2.7 Annie Elstone, born 1882 in Bristol, Gloucs; may have married in 1905 or more probably in 1914, nfi 2.2.8 Rose Elstone, born 1885 in Bristol, Gloucs, died 1891. and probably also: 2.2.9 William Elias Elstone, born 1876 in Bristol, Gloucs, died 1877. 2.2.10 George Edward Elstone, born 1887 in Bristol, Gloucs, died 1890. James Elston, born c.1847 in Shobrooke; he married Susan Farley (born 1848 in Nymet Rowland, dau. of Richard and Mary Farley) on 4 Sep 1870 in the parish church, Nymet Rowland; Susan already had a son, James Farley, a year old when they married, who may well be James Elston's son as he is listed on census entries from 1871 as James' son James Elston; James and Susan settled in Crediton, in Blagdon Place almost next door to James' parents Elias and Mary Ann, and James worked as a labourer; they had a further 6 children before Susan died aged 37 in 1885 in Crediton. On 12 Mar 1887 in Providence Chapel, Exeter (a Bible Christian chapel), he married Mary Ann Shaddick (born 1852 in Hartland, dau. of Thomas and Margaret Shaddick); Mary Ann already had an illegitimate son, Edwin Galsworthy Shaddick, born 1880 in Clovelly, who remained living with his grandparents Thomas and Margaret after Mary Ann married, at least until 1901, and may later have emigrated to Canada; his middle name may be from Mary Ann's mother, born Margaret Galsworthy, or may perhaps be an indication of the father's name. In 1891 and 1901 James and Mary Ann were living in Mill Street, Crediton, and James was a labourer, later a plate layer, on the railway; but in 1895, when his daughter Emma died, his address was 4 Richmond Terrace, Clifton – probably, he had gone there to look after his daughter. James' birth was registered in the name of Elston, but he spelled his name consistently Elstone in the registrations of his marriage and the births of all his children, though in the censuses of 1881 and 1901 (but not 1871 and 1891) his name is spelled Elston. James and Susan had the following children: 2.3.1 James Farley alias Elstone, born 1869 in Nymet Rowland and registered at birth as James Farley; in the 1871 and 1881 censuses he was called James Elston(e), living with James and his mother and listed as James' son; in 1891 he was a 22-year-old mechanic, boarding in

3. John Davy Elston, bapt. 2 Aug 1819 in Sandford; in 1828, at the age of 9, he was apprenticed like his older siblings to Elias Tremlett, yeoman. In 1846 in Tiverton he married Jane Elston (born c.1821 in Tiverton. but so far unidentified); John and Jane had 4 children by 1855, when a tragedy appears to have struck, as three of the children all died at the same time. For a few years it is uncertain what happened to John and Jane; in 1861 John is living alone in Upton Pyne, working as an agricultural labourer; and there is an unidentified 5-year-old Mary Jane Elston, born in Upton Pyne, who was a visitor to George and Elizabeth Gidley in Heavitree, who may be a daughter of John and Jane, born soon after the tragedy and staying with her aunt (in 1871 Mary Jane is in service living in Exeter); but I can find no trace of Jane or their daughter Eliza, who had only recently been born in Shobrooke. By 1871 John and Jane have resurfaced together, living in Exeter St Edmund; John is working as a carter, and they did have at least two more children; in 1881 they are living in Heavitree, St Thomas, at the Old Abbey; Jane died in St Thomas in 1889, and John probably in 1892. John and Jane had the following children: 3.1 Dinah Elston, born c.1846 in Cadbury, died late 1855 in St Thomas RD. 3.2 Susan Elston, born c.1847 probably in Newton St Cyres; in 1861 she was a servant aged 15 in the house of John Dunning in Exeter St Leonard; in 1870 in Wells, Somerset, she married Edwin Bincham (born c.1846 in Wells, Somerset, the son of John and Caroline Bincham); Edwin was a mason, and they lived in Edwin's home parish of St Cuthbert Out, Wells, Somerset. In 1891, Susan's widowed father John Davie Elston was staying with them. Edwin died in 1898, and Susan in 1932. Edwin and Susan had 4 children: 3.2.1 Fred Bincham, born 1871 in Wells, Somerset; at home in 1881 and 1891; in 1895 in Wells, Fred (now known as Frederick) married Emily Jane Allen (born 1 Feb 1872 at Wookey Hole, Somerset, daughter of Henry and Ann Allen); later they moved to Wooburn, Bucks, where Fred worked as an engineer in the paper mills. Emily died in Wooburn in 1939, and Fred in 1956 at the age of 84. Fred and Emily had 3 daughters and 3 sons: 3.2.1.1 Emily Bincham, born 1895 in Wells, Somerset; Emily married a soldier, Francis Berthold Walter Reynolds (born c.1891 in Meiktila, India, now in Burma), in Aldershot in 1916; Francis was killed in action on 5 Aug 1917 at Passchendaele during the 3rd Battle of Ypres, and is buried in a war cemetary at Ypres, Belgium. Emily married again in 1921, to Alfred Charles Harris (born 1893 in the Wycombe RD), and they had 2 girls and 3 boys. 3.2.1.2 Stanley Edwin Frederick Bincham, known as Ted, born 1902 in Wooburn, Bucks. 3.2.1.3 Winifred Alice Bincham, known as Win, born 1906 in Wooburn, Bucks; she married Edward Alec Bartrum (bornb 1902 in Woolwich) in 1934. 3.2.1.4 Victoria Ann Bincham, known as Queenie, born 1908 in

Wooburn, Bucks; she married Ernest James Oldale (born 1906 in Sheffield, Yorks, son of Ernest Oldale and Emily Jane Elston (no relative!) who were married in 1904). Ernest and Queenie had 4 daughters and a son. 3.2.1.5 Reginald F Bincham, born 1911 in Wooburn, Bucks, died in 1912 before his first birthday. 3.2.1.6 Leslie W Bincham, born 1914 in Wooburn, Bucks; married Lena Priest in Wooburn in 1939, and they had a son and a daughter. 3.2.2 Alice Maud Bincham, born 1874 in Wells, Somerset; at home in 1881 and 1891; Alice appears to have married in 1903, nfi 3.2.3 Mary Jane Bincham, born 1876 in Wells, Somerset; at home in 1881 and 1891, she died in 1909 aged 32 in Wells, Somerset. 3.2.4 Matilda Bincham, born 1881 in Wells, Somerset; at home in 1891 and 1901, nfi Mary Jane Elston, born 1850 in Crediton, died late 1855 in St Thomas RD. John Davey Elston, born 1853, died late 1855 in St Thomas RD. Eliza Elston, born c.1860 in Shobrooke, at home in 1871; Eliza may have married in 1882 in St Thomas, nfi John Davie Elston, born 1864 in St Leonard, at home in 1871 and 1881; may have died aged 23 in Exeter in 1887, nfi

4. James Elston, bapt. 1 Apr 1821 in Sandford, nfi.

5. Samuel Elston, bapt. as Samuel Elstone 5 Jan 1823 in Sandford; he is probably the Samuel Elston who was a servant on the farm of John Pope at Henstill north of Sandford in 1841, and the Samuel Elson, general labourer, who was visiting John Fisher in Littleham in 1851; he may be the Samuel Elson, labourer aged 36, who was a patient at the Devon County Lunatic Asylum in Exminster in 1861; later he may have emigrated: there was a Samuel Elson aged 58, born in England, who was an unmarried blacksmith in Nassau, Rensselaer, New York, listed in the US census in 1880, nfi.

6. Susanna Elstone was bapt. as Susanna Elstone 10 Oct 1824 in Sandford, and continued to spell her surname this way in adult life; in 1833, at the age of 9, she was apprenticed to William Lake, yeoman; in 1851, she was a servant in a household in High Street, Crediton; on 30 May 1852 in Crediton, she married William James Mayne North (born c.1824, son of John North), after which they seem to disappear, and one wonders whether they emigrated; nfi.

7. Daniel Elston, bapt. 11 Mar 1827 in Sandford, and in service aged 14 with local landowner John Norrish in Upton Hellions in 1841. Appears to have gone to sea, not found in the 1851 census, but in 1855 in Exeter, Daniel married Eliza Baxter (born c.1827 in Torquay, nfi); in 1861 he and Eliza were visitors in the home of William Kelly in Stoke Damerel; Daniel was a seaman, and Eliza a dressmaker. In 1866 in Stoke Damerel, Daniel married Ann Cribb (born c.1829 in North America, nfi) and in 1871 Daniel and Ann were living in Exeter St David's; Daniel was a gardener. In 1875 in Exeter RD, Daniel married Eliza Field Hookway (born c.Jun 1843 in Thorverton, dau. of James Hookway and Charlotte Field). In 1881 Daniel and Eliza were living in Christow on the farm of George Grant, Eliza's uncle (her mother's sister's widowed husband); Daniel was working as a shepherd, and Eliza as

housekeeper. Daniel died in Christow in 1886. Daniel and Eliza had one son; in 1891 Eliza was living in Christow, raising her son on her own income; in 1901 she was a dairy keeper in Silverton, employing 2 live-in workers. Daniel and Eliza's son was: 7.1 George Daniel Field Elston, born c.Mar 1882 in Christow; he appears to have married Elizabeth Nott in 1909. (Elizabeth may be the sister of Thomas Nott, one of the workers living with George and his mother in 1901.)

8. Mary Ann Elston, bapt. as Mary Ann Elson on 12 May 1829 in Sandford. In 1841, Mary Ann was a servant on Thomas Partridge's farm at Aller Barton, West Sandford, and in 1851 (still listed as Elson) she was a servant in the household of innkeeper's widow Mary Phillips in Torquay; in 1857 in Crediton, now known as Mary Ann Elston, she married Samuel Traies (born 1831 in Crediton, son of John and Jane Traies). Samuel was a tailor, and they lived in the High Street, Crediton, where they can be found in 1861, 1871 and 1881. In 1861 Samuel and Mary Ann had a visitor, a 2-year-old Daniel Elston, born in Upton Hellions, staying with them; Daniel appears to have died 5 years later in Exeter at the age of 7, and is as yet otherwise unidentified. One supposes he is probably a nephew of Mary Ann's. There seems to be no trace of Samuel and Mary Ann in the 1891 or 1901 censuses of England & Wales, but they both lived into their eighties and died in Crediton, Mary Ann in 1911 and Samuel a few months later, early in 1912. They appear to have had no children.

9. William Elston, bapt. as William Elstone on 5 Apr 1833 in Sandford, died in infancy and was buried in Sandford on 14 Jan 1834.

10. Hannah Maria Elston, bapt. as Anna Maria Elstone 13 Dec 1836 in Sandford, but always known as Hannah (she was married as Hannah Maria Elston). By 1841, and still in 1851, she was the only one of their children living at home with her parents Elias and Elizabeth. On 4 Dec 1858 in Exeter Register Office she married William White Ellis (born 1835 in Sandford, son of John and Elizabeth Ellis of Witheridge), and after the births of their first two children they moved to Wales and settled in Cardiff, Glamorgan. William (like his father) was a glazier and house painter. William and Hannah had 7 children: 10.1 Susanna Ellis, born 1859 in Sandford, and lived at home with her parents in Cardiff, working as a dressmaker after leaving school, until 1882 when she married John David (born c.1851 in Cardiff, probably the son of Cardiff blacksmith John David and his wife Elizabeth, one of at least 10 children). John and Susanna had three children before Susanna died at the age of just 33 in 1892. John, a railway engine driver, was still living in Cardiff in 1901, a widower looking after his three children. John and Susanna's children were: 10.1.1 Elizabeth Catherine David, born 1883 in Cardiff, Glamorgan 10.1.2 Ernest John A David, born 1885 in Cardiff, Glamorgan 10.1.3 Gladys Mary David, born 1891 in Cardiff, Glamorgan 10.2 William John Ellis, born 1863 in Sandford; living at home in Cardiff, Glamorgan and working as a letter carrier in 1881; in 1885 he married Lydia Davison (born 1864 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, dau. of William and Mary Davison or Davidson); William became an Inspector of Postmen; he and Lydia were living in Cardiff in 1891, when Lydia's widowed mother Mary was living with them; in 1901 they were living in Barry, Glamorgan. William and Lydia had 6 children, all living with their parents in 1901:
