DARREN GAUSON

Assistant Coach • Distance 3rd season at Lamar Napier (Scotland), 2006

Darren Gauson was named distance and cross country coach on September 17, 2012, and in that short time, he’s helped build upon Lamar’s outstanding distance tradition. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native guided both the men’s and women’s cross country programs to back-to-back Southland Conference titles 2013 and 2014, and helped develop three of the four individual champions during that span. In 2013 Both Matt Johnsen and Ash Harrell were key in the success for the men, finishing first and second at the conference meet en route to qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. Both Minttu Hukka and Sam Stabler dominated in 2014, both downing league records in the process. Gauson was named as the Southland Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams, both seasons. The women’s team, which had not tasted Southland glory since 2006, was comprised almost entirely of Gauson’s first recruiting class at LU. The group demolished the field at the conference championships on the way to posting its best finish at the NCAA South Central Regional since 2007. In all, nine LU runners earned a spot on the 2013 All-Southland teams, and two more took home honorable mentions. Johnsen was named Athlete of the Year and both Harrell and Leigh Lattimore earned Newcomer of the Year. It was more of the same in the next season when Big Red took home five of the six specialty awards including men’s and women’s athletes of the year (Stabler and Hukka), Freshmen of the Year (Jan Lukas Becker and Hukka) and Newcomer of the Year (Jannika John). LU collected eight All-SLC athletes. Joining the program just after the start of the 2012 campaign, Gauson directed Johnsen to the NCAA Championships, placing 33rd and becoming just the fourth Lamar harrier to earn All-American honors since 1969. As his first year turned to the indoor season, two more of his athletes made some noise as both Joe Wade and Becky Gough took home Southland Conference indoor titles. Wade earned the mile championship, his third win of the season in the event, with a time of 4:08.80, marking the fastest time at the SLC meet since 1998. Gough won the 3,000 meter run, completing the race in

Both Gough and Claire Miles also earned all-conference designation in two events. Prior to Lamar, Gauson spent four seasons with Butler University, helping develop and maintain one of the most successful programs in the Horizon League. While at BU, the Bulldog men continued a streak of 14 consecutive conference championships in cross country, including a 29th place finish at the NCAA National Championships in 2008. He was also pivotal in the individual development of a number of athletes, including four All-Americans (Andrew Baker, Callum Hawkins, Steve Lisgo and Rob Mullet). Gauson also worked with sprinters and hurdlers, helping the group break four school records in three years. Prior to joining the Bulldog staff, Gauson was a standout athlete for BU for two seasons, earning a Horizon League crown in the 1,500 meter run in 2008. He’s also a former Scottish national champion in the event, winning in both 2004 and 2005. A 2006 graduate of Napier University in Scotland, Gauson holds a bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise science. He completed his master’s in education at Butler in 2008. Gauson is married to the former Marbeth Shiell.

ALESHA WALKER

Assistant Coach • Jumps 2nd season at Lamar New Mexico , 2011

After putting together a stellar career at the University of New Mexico, Alesha Walker was named to Lamar’s staff on November 11, 2013. Walker, who spent the last two-plus seasons as a graduate assistant for the Lobos, was one of the school’s most-decorated athletes. The Killeen, Texas, native holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the long jump and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials. “For the athletes that are here, I think having a former athlete that has been through what they have will be a big help,” explained LU head coach Trey Clark. “She’s brought in a wealth of experience, especially when you consider the kind of jumps program that New Mexico has. Any time that you can bring in someone that has that level of national exposure, it’s going to be huge for the athletes and their development.” While on staff at UNM, Walker had a number of everyday duties in the office, but worked primarily with the jumps program, which produced four All-America honorees in 2012 and three more in 2013. Walker graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2011, and she’s currently pursuing her master’s in kinesiology.

GO BIG RED THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE 2015 LAMAR TRACK AND FIELD

Now in its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities inthree states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15,1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of existence. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed four additional members in 2013: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the Southland also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns

automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewership through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. In its first six years, the network has received recognition for its work, earning numerous College Sports Media and Telly Awards. The Southland Conference, in conjunction with the city of Frisco, Texas, and Hunt Sports Group, also serves as the host to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in Frisco, which has been home to the conference headquarters since 2006. The game is played at Frisco’s Toyota Stadium, and after a successful three-year run, the partnership was rewarded with a three-year renewal to serve as the national championship host site through the 2015 season.

Head Coach Trey Clark with the portrait of the lives lost in a plane crash that claimed head coach Ty Terrell (very left), Don Delaune (right), Randy Clewis, Mike Favazza, and Waverly Thomas (left). Clark hoists the portrait in his office as a reminder of the successes of Coach Terrell and his WAVERLY THOMAS team despite lesser advantage of other universities. The plane went down on April 28, 1968 on the way home from the Drake Relays.
