Limassol is officially included among the 100 best cities to live from around the globe, taking the 87th position in a total number of 231 cities from every corner of the earth. As every year, Mercel Consultants prepared a list of the cities where life is at its prime, having as criteria factors such as political stability, health services, education standards, delinquency rates, means of mass transportation, and recreation options. First on the list, for the ninth consecutive year, come to Vienne, while Europe dominates the top ten positions. More specifically, besides Vienne, we find three German cities (namely, Munich, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt), three Swiss ones (Zurich, Geneva and Basil) and one from New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Denmark. When it comes to Asia, first on the list is Singapore, but way far from the top, in the 25th position, while one must move down to the 77th position to find one city from Latin America – namely Montevideo, the famous city in Uruguay. According to this year’s result, Athens comes 86th, just one place above Limassol, which is amazing, especially if we take a look at the major cities and European capitals it leaves behind, including Esthonia’s Talin, Argentina’s Buenos Ires, Zagreb in Croatia, Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel, the legendary Istanbul in European Turkey, Pancong, Casablanca in Marocco, Moscow and Saint Petersburg in Russia, as well as the beautiful but hard-tried Cairo in Egypt. It is worth mentioning, also, that Limassol is the sole representative of Cyprus included in the list. Again this year, the last place in Mercel’s list is taken by Bagdad, which still struggles to tackle basic daily life issues for its people. Limassol’s ever-growing repute as one of the best retreats in the world has not proven an idle one. Its excellent health services and educational institutions, as well as its incredible natural beauty and constant financial growth, keeps the eye of international property investors fixed on its shores. Discovering Cyprus’ Wine Villages Cyprus has a longstanding tradition of winemaking, and produces a wide variety of wines ranging from the ancient sweet-tasting Commandaria, to more well-known global varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. While the island’s wine industry has been thoroughly modernized and greatly expanded, there are still many villages that produce wine in the old traditional ways, and these make for a fun day of exploring. 20 Limassol villages with 16 wineries among them, all of which are renowned for their deep-rooted history of viticulture, as well as their excellent local wines and the beautiful scenery that surrounds them. What makes these villages especially fruitful is the dry climate, as well as their unique geology that is favorable for the local grape varieties they produce. These include Xynisteri (white) and Mavro (red), as well as certain imported varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Grenache, and Syrah. The most popular of these wine-routes is the one that follows the Limassol Winemaking Villages, or ‘Krasochoria,’ boasting the highest concentration of wineries on the island. Birdwatching Tourists are not the only visitors that ‘flock’ to Cyprus. The Elusive Mouflon The curly-horned Mouflon is the pride and joy of the Cyprus forests. This species of wild sheep, native only to the remote mountainous regions of Cyprus, was declared a vulnerable species after years of being hunted. Today, it resides peacefully deep in the Pafos forest. Mouflon are generally shy creatures, preferring to stay hidden in the brush of the steep slopes of Troodos, venturing out only to nibble on edible plants and trees. However, determined hikers can venture out to the forestry station of Stavros tis Psokas, where a fenced area allows visitors glimpses of this elusive animal. Picnic and Camping Sites There is nothing like a brisk hike in the crisp mountain air to really whet your appetite. Luckily, the Troodos mountain range has plenty of picnic and camping sites, all of which fall under the umbrella of the Cyprus Forestry Department, where visitors can enjoy being at one with nature. All have easy access and offer a range of amenities, including tables, sanitary facilities, playgrounds, barbecue sites, drinking water, car parks and more, all free of charge. Camping sites in the Troodos mountain range are also available for a small fee per overnight stay. And so, when city life becomes overwhelming, or you feel you’ve had quite enough of the beach, just remember that there is a whole other side to Cyprus that is waiting to be explored, where you can enhance your senses and experiences with some of the island’s most spectacular scenery.
