From the Mayor’s Desk... May Day! May Day!! My favorite month of the year! May is the month we truly get to marvel at God’s creation on display all around us—the beautiful full blooms, lush green grass & trees, and the long awaited pleasant temperatures! And, this month brings one special occasion after another. I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the celebration, or remembrance, of all the Mothers who lived and worked tirelessly shaping who we are today. We end the month remembering and honoring those who sacrificed their life Marty Handlon for the freedoms we enjoy in this great nation. As the end Mayor, City of Alabaster of the school year approaches, our students, parents, faculty, coaches and SROs are to be congratulated on their many hard earned accomplishments while juggling a variety of hectic schedules! You are almost there!! I have only the best of wishes for our high school and college seniors on their completion of another huge milestone in their lives. Now, go forth and conquer! On more official business, the city has been very busy in a variety of areas. As you know, city leadership and many residents have been actively involved in the process of updating the Comprehensive Plan for the city of Alabaster, with the Regional Planning Commission. If you were unable to make one of the recent open meetings, I hope you are able to take advantage of the on-line surveys and open comments sections afforded to you through the Alabaster Forward website at www.alabasterforward.com. It is important we hear from our residents as we decide on the path of our future. The last week of April, we had meetings focused on the future development of our Medical Mile and the Siluria Mill Village area. Our Medical Mile is host to only 20% of our businesses, but is the area where 73% of Alabaster jobs are located. We continue to be focused on advancing this area to include more services and jobs within our city. The Siluria Mill Village area encompasses approximately 300 acres, and is becoming the heart of our city with the beautiful buildings housing the senior center, city hall and municipal court. The historical appeal and walkability of Buck Creek make it prime for redevelopment into the city’s civic and cultural epicenter, while supporting mixed use developments. Going through this process is very exciting for those of us who have a passion for our city, and seeing all the possibilities for the next 10 years. I encourage you to be a part of it! This is also a very busy time of year for many of our departments, as they take care of our parks, road ways, easements, and common areas to keep the city looking good. Please show your appreciation by being a good citizen, by not littering and caring how public facilities are utilized. I continue to be thankful for the dedicated employees who embrace customer service, and strive to be better public servants to our residents. There are positive things “in the works” for our city, and it is the work of many to make it happen. Happy day to all our mothers, and everyone blessed by a mother—yours or someone else’s! Blessings,

Scott Brakefield, Ward 6 City Council President
Greetings! In just another month, Saturday, June 6th to be exact, we will be gearing up for the 13th annual Alabaster City Fest. This is a wonderful event put on by the Alabaster Arts Council in conjunction with the City of Alabaster and numerous sponsors. The best part of the event, besides the music and all the activities for the family, is it is free admission! This years headliner is Scotty McCreery. I am sure that it will be another successful year and I cannot wait to see everyone there! I would also like to say an early congratulation to our 2015 THS Graduates! This is an exciting time for them as they begin new chapters in their lives. I recently had an opportunity to work with Wisteria HOA to address some concerns they had in the neighborhood. The City always wants what is best for our Residents. I thank them for being passionate about their homes and being patient as we worked to address their concerns. Make sure to visit your parks during the month of May. This is the last month for Spring City Sports! So get out their and support our youngsters!
Sophie Martin, Ward 1
Progress continues in Ward 1. Congratulations to the members of Liberty Baptist Church who recently celebrated their church expansion with a memorable groundbreaking ceremony. The Liberty Baptist Family Life Center will definitely serve many families and make a positive impact in our community. The expected completion date of the Liberty Baptist Family Life Center is January 2016. We look forward to their grand opening! The installation of a new sewer pump in front of Joe’s Italian in Ward 1 is complete and operating. This will improve utilization and efficiency to the homes and businesses in this area. Please remember to not flush cloths, diapers, dental floss, etc. The pipes are not designed to handle these types of items and the result is costly damage the sewer system. If you have any questions, please call the Alabaster Environmental Services Department at 664-6825. The Alabaster Water Board is celebrating their 60th anniversary of providing customers with safe, reliable, and

cost effective water supply. It’s also the perfect time to launch the rebranding and the reveal of the new Alabaster Water logo. Congratulations to the staff and to Laura Koon, Alabaster Water Board Manager, for doing an exemplary job. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at martin@cityofalabster.com. Kindest regards, Sophie

Wow, considering the April showers’ frequency and intensity, we should be seeing some bountiful May flowers. I want to commend all of the municipal departments for their handling of the abnormally large influx of rain and the issues associated with such a soggy stretch. Despite rain volumes creating flooding situations, scheduling issues, and maintenance nightmares, Alabaster rolled on through the month without missing a beat. Our city is blessed with some very talented and dedicated employees, and a quick word of thanks from you to any of them would go a long way to helping them realize their efforts are not unnoticed. The first Saturday in June looms less than a month away. CityFest is almost here, and the Alabaster Arts Council has once again put together an all-star lineup for our listening pleasure. Please make sure to save the date and take the whole family to enjoy the variety of opportunities that will await you when the gates open Saturday morning, June 6th. It is always awesome to see the results of throwing a party for 80,000 of your closest friends. This month also marks the second graduating class of the Alabaster City School system. This has been an outstanding year for our schools, with continued improvements in facilities and student performances. To Dr. Vickers and the board, the administrators, faculties, and staff of the schools, my hat goes off to what you do every day to provide the optimal educational experience for our students. Looking down the road, it would appear that the bar would continue to be raised (and cleared) for years to come. To the Class of 2015, you will always be remembered as one of the building blocks on which future students will rise above what is expected and advance to the exceptional. Thank you for your hard work and devotion to preparing yourselves for the future and paving the way for those to follow. It is a superb day to be a Warrior. Finally, take one day out of your busy life to celebrate the life of your mother. Mother’s Day arrives shortly, and each of us needs to remember the one who gave us life. I lost my mother fifteen years ago, but her presence is felt daily in the life I live and the decisions I make. If you have your mother, give her some special treatment and a major hug. She deserves it. Grace and peace, Bob
Stacy Rakestraw, Ward 3
It was a very successful year for the Clean Sweep. E-cycling and paper shredding were a big hit and we had a constant flow, for three hours, of residents bringing loads of items to be disposed of. THS Basketball, Leo and SGA clubs, Evangel Youth, MVES Boy Scouts, CVES Girl Scouts, FBCA, Kathy and Johnny Belser and their group of teens were all GREAT volunteers - You served your community well! Thank you Lisa Glasgow and Beverly Baker for all of your wonderful help - I appreciate you! I want to thank Liberty Baptist Church for recognizing, the Mayor, Sophie Martin, Angela McKnight and myself, in a special church service to honor “Alabaster’s Women in Public Service”. It is a privilege and a blessing to be able to serve this city and its residents. Congratulations to Alabaster City Schools on all of the accomplishments that have benefited the students, in so many ways, and it is just the end of year two. Graduation is coming up and again in our home it is a bittersweet time having another child graduate and move into another chapter in life. Congratulations Faith and to all the graduates at ACS, Evangel and Kingwood schools. Jeremiah 29:11-14a Happy Mother’s Day!
Rick Walters, Ward 4
Last month Alabaster stakeholders continued the work on our Comprehensive Plan – the blueprint we use for future development of our city. We received a good turnout at first meeting on March 10th, and despite the inclement weather our residents turned out to give their thoughts on transportation, cultural and recreational opportunities. In April we took comments from business owners for the plan designers to incorporate into the plan. You can follow the progress and results from the surveys at www.alabasterforward.com. The equipment for our bio-diesel recycling program has been ordered and we hope to roll the program out within the next 60 days. Recycling station locations are being identified as we prepare the building it will be housed in. Updates and instructions will be posted on our city website as the final details become available. The city is also researching the possibility of establishing one or more “Safe Trade” stations in Alabaster. These are public places where you can meet someone to trade or sell your personal property with some sense of safety. Larger cities across the country have seen an increase of crime from people responding to advertisements in the paper or on social media. The “safe zones” would be identified with signage, well lit and perhaps monitored with cameras. The premise is that if someone would not meet you where they can be seen or recorded that you should be concerned about meeting them.
Finally another successful school year for Alabaster City Schools will come to an end this month. Congratulations to all our students, and best wishes to all our graduates. Thanks for the opportunity to serve each of you and Keep in Touch!
Russell Bedsole, Ward 5
Do you remember reading in my April comments about the March showers? Well the month of April was filled with many many days of rain. Let us all praise God for the abundance of rain that has given us the beautiful green grass and has made all our flowers bloom so richly. During the month of May many Alabaster families will celebrate as their children are graduates of the class of 2015. Congratulations to all our grads from Thompson, Evangel, and Kingwood. I challenge each grad to further your education, grow in your maturity, and one day return to Alabaster and give back to a city that has served you well in your years as a youth. Before I go. I would like to wish all the moms of Alabaster a very Happy Mother’s Day. The job of a mom is often thankless throughout the year, but let us all take this one day and make it all about mom. Please continue to stay in touch with me with any needs you have.
Tommy Ryals, Ward 7
The City recently added a feature to our website called “Municode”. It’s program that “organizes” our laws into basically a single, searchable document. In the past, ordinances were passed, amended, repealed, updated, or all of the above as times and City governments change over the years. Situations are different, goals are different, laws are outdated, new laws are needed. As you might guess, this creates havoc from a recordkeeping standpoint to be sure the most recent ‘version” is what is distributed and enforced. For things like Zoning ordinances, which may be distributed as a bound version, we had to remember to also hand out all the supplemental pages that were revised since the books were printed. All of these laws are part of the “City Code”. Periodically, the City Council votes to “codify” these ordinances. Codification is the collection into one body of the principals of a system of law. It contains all revisions in one place and essentially repeals the older versions so they don’t conflict with each other. Traditionally, this took significant time to accomplish by hand. Now, with “Municode”, we can have these revisions and additions added to the online, searchable document almost as soon as they are voted on and become effective. The codification still has to be voted on by the Council but you can see it much more quickly than in the past. cityofalabaster.com 5

Alabaster’s CityFest featuring
Scotty McCreery
Scotty McCreery headlines CityFest 2015
Since the first Alabaster CityFest, the continuous question asked has been: “Who is this year’s headliner?” The 2015 Alabaster CityFest will welcome “American Idol” Season 10 victor, and country music Phenom, Scotty McCreery. “The Alabaster Arts Council is honored to have Scotty McCreery as this year’s headliner,” stated Adam Moseley, President of the Alabaster Arts Council. “He is an extremely talented artist who puts on an incredible show. He will definitely be a hit at CityFest.” When he entered the national music scene in 2011, at age 17, he quickly established himself as one of country music’s hottest new stars. By 21, he has sold nearly 2.5 million albums and received both Platinum and Gold album certifications, debuted three consecutive albums at number one on the Billboard Chart, achieved three Platinum-certified singles and two Top Ten Hits. After winning Season 10 of “American Idol,” McCreery released his debut album, Clear as Day, and became the youngest man in history to have his first album debut atop the all-genre Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Clear as Day was certified Platinum for sales of one million units in just 13 weeks. The first two singles from that album, “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble with Girls,” have since been certified Platinum. He won the New Artist of the Year Award at both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards and the American Country Awards in 2011. And the next year

he received the CMT Music Award for the USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year for “The Trouble with Girls.” He released his See You Tonight album in October 2013 and was debuted at number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart. McCreery co-wrote five songs on the album including the first single, “See You Tonight,” which was certified Platinum and became his first Top Ten Hit. The video for “See You Tonight” spent an impressive 11 weeks at number one on GAC’s fan-voted “Top 20 Countdown.” At 9:00 p.m., McCreery will grace the stage to entertain tens of thousands of fans from all over the Southeast. You don’t want to miss it!
CityFest: It’s Almost Here!
It is finally here! The City of Alabaster celebrates the 13th Anniversary of the Alabaster CityFest on June 6, 2015, and it will be one to remember! Planned and organized by members of the Alabaster Arts Council, and innumerable volunteers, the Alabaster CityFest has drawn crowds surpassing 75,000 people, locally and all over the Southeastern region. This FREE, all-day outdoor music festival features a variety of renowned artists representing a variety of genres. “You have the Crawfish Boil in Birmingham and a lot of different festivals in other cities, but there was nothing like that here in Alabaster,” began Jamia Alexander-Williams, Alabaster Arts Council Board of Directors member. “When we started this, it was to bring something to the City of Alabaster so that our community could come together and enjoy. It has grown tremendously and I expect this one to be the biggest one yet!” This festival kicks off that Friday night with live publicity at
Earnest McCarty Ford and early registration for the 2nd Annual Alabaster CityFest 5K Fun Run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Thompson Intermediate School gymnasium. Regular 5k package pick-up will be Saturday morning from 7:00-7:30 a.m. The race will began and finish at Warrior Park. “We started the 5K because we have so many runners that are local to Alabaster,” she continued. “We wanted to make sure that we provided this extension of the CityFest for them. The 5K is family oriented, so feel free to walk or run or even push a stroller.” This major project costs over $100,000 which comes from sponsors so that it can be free to the community. Aside from individual vendor purchases, the 5K is the only paid event. “Money is only raised through the 5K because CityFest is our gift to the City,” Alexander-Williams added. “The money that we take in that is not used for CityFest is given right back to the school arts programs throughout the City of Alabaster.” Earnest McCarty Ford will also sponsor the Alabaster CityFest Cruise-In Car Show from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Municipal Park on Warrior Drive. Entry is FREE and all years, makes, and models of vehicles are encouraged to participate. Door prizes and t-shirt giveaways will be going on and, back by popular demand, the People’s Choice Awards will return. CityFest attendees can visit and vote on the favorite vehicle. Alabaster CityFest was designed with the community in mind. There is a VIP area that takes care of the city employees and sponsors. There are separate areas for kids and for teens to enjoy and vendors to visit and tons to do while listening to live music.
“When we started this, it was to bring something to the City of Alabaster so that our community could come together and enjoy. “ -Jamia Alexander-Williams, Alabaster Arts Council Board of Directors “If there is anything that we are not doing that you think that we should, or if you have any suggestions, like adding other festivities, we welcome your inquiries,” Alexander-Williams added. “We encourage growth. This festival is for the community, and all citizens have to do is submit their idea.” Year after year, it gets bigger and better because of YOU. If you want to volunteer, be a vendor, be an artist, be involved, then the Arts Council encourages you to send in your applications and/or demo CDs.
CityFest Parking
For your convenience, Alabaster CityFest has FREE parking and FREE shuttles running from the festival site to several public parking areas. The shuttles will run in approximately 15-20 minute intervals from 8:45 a.m. until the end of the event. The shuttles will pick up from these parking areas as they begin to fill up: Thompson High School, Warrior Park, and Thompson High School Football Stadium. Another public parking area is the Publix parking lot, but the shuttle will NOT pick up from this location. For specific directions, visit: www.alabastercityfest. com/directions

Celebrate Mothers with these local ideas
Mothers are everything when we are in our tender years. From kissing “boo-boos” to telling us over and over that we can do it, growing up, mothers tend to be our very first hero. On Sunday, May 10th, make this Mother’s Day worthwhile. Whether she is your biological mother or someone who has cared for you as if you were her own, this is a day to recognize and honor just how special she is. What do you buy for the World’s Greatest Mom?
“What is really popular for Mother’s Day is jewelry,” Tatum said with a smile. “It’s the type of jewelry that you build yourself. We have someone here with really good taste that creates beautiful pieces, and a lot of the men come in and say ‘I want that’.” To make her day that much more memorable, have flowers delivered to her from one of our local flower shops or take her out to dinner at one of our quality restaurants. This day is set aside to make her feel special, so make it count!

At Bedazzle Me More they have the perfect gifts for the perfect moms.
“What we specialize in is making bedazzled shirts,” shared Katalina Cingoranelli from Bedazzle Me More. “You can get anything placed on any type of shirt that you want, like Happy Mother’s Day or even her name.” Cingoranelli explained the various options that can be customized as a unique gift for your unique mother. Whether your mother is a sports fanatic or interested in the glitz and glamour, customizing a shirt to say something that captures her personality may be a great surprise for her. “That’s an awesome Mother’s Day Gift,” she concluded. “I don’t think that anyone would dislike a gift like that.” If your mom loves traditional Mother’s Day Gifts, spice up traditions with a stop at Hallmark. “Most of the gifts we have are your standard frames and stationary gift items with matching pastel colors this year,” shared Marla Tatum from Hallmark. “We also have the battery operated candles and many religious type items.” You can shop to find mom that perfect heirloom, or even start a new family tradition. 8 cityofalabaster.com

The Cost of Freedom
Freedom is not free. Service members live, breathe and die so that fellow countrymen can enjoy the liberties that come with the sacrifice. What may seem like a simple celebration to those not fighting, has a deeper meaning to those in the sacrifice. “Memorial Day is commemorations to those that have fought and labored for American freedom,” began U.S. Army Veteran Mack Harris, Jr. “They’ve sacrificed a great deal for U.S. citizens to maintain their freedom.” Freedom is often taken for granted. When service men and women have to leave for combat, they leave family behind to battle for the assurance that this country’s inalienable rights will not be violated. “It’s a transition mentally and physically to adjust and adapt to other environments,” he conveyed. “The whole mindset has to change. It’s a battle before you even get to the battle field.” Harris volunteered with the U.S. Army at the end of the Vietnam War at age 17 because he wanted to be a better man and travel to places he could never go as a civilian. During his service as a field wireman, Harris was promoted to the classification E4 with a special “crypto clearance” – a secret clearance for warfare communication. “I went in with this mindset: ‘I’m not going to go into the military and come out the same way that I went in,’” Harris expounded. “My goal and objective was to be better than what I was and I would use all of the resources that they offered to become that.” Before reaching the field of battle, average people are sculpted into soldiers and fashioned for combat. Disciplined to serve and protect fellow countrymen, soldiers forgo who they are to become what we need them to be, in order to safeguard our liberties. “It’s like a legal form of brainwashing. They convince you that you can do things that you thought you’d never be able to do,” Harris shared, never regretting his experience. “When you come back to the ‘civilized’ world and try to adjust, you’re torn mentally between [civilian life] and combat because you ARE military.” He shared stories of how service members, young and old, return from combat and struggle to transition. They have given their lives for this and deserve support from the community, the states, the nation. “When you go into the military, you don’t come back the same. There are things that you never

Veteran Pastor Mack Harris Jr.
forget, but you learn to live with,” he expressed somberly. “We need some type of program to help them adjust. We need to do something that will ensure that they are appreciated.” Harris disclosed that Memorial Day is more than just one day to remember the fallen. The question remains: How can we celebrate and honor the living through more than the passing of laws? “These guys still have to live. What are we doing to honor these guys other than talk?” he asked. “We didn’t cause the war, but we fight in it. We sacrifice life for country. That’s the price of freedom.”

Alabaster Water Board Celebrates 60 years
This year the Alabaster Water Board is proudly celebrating sixty years of providing customers with safe, reliable, and cost effective water supply. In 1955, community leaders W.M. Farris, W. Gray Jones and K.B. Nickerson incorporated the Alabaster Water and Gas Board to serve 1,200 residents. The Water and Gas Board sold the gas system in 1994 to focus its efforts on operating the water system and changed the corporate name to The Alabaster Water Board in 1995. “As a part of our 60th Anniversary, we are going through a rebranding,” began Chairman Rick Walters excitedly. “The Water Board is a separate entity from the City of Alabaster, but we work well together. This is a good opportunity to explain who we are and how we serve the community.” Part of the rebranding includes a new logo for the Alabaster Water Board that the Board of Directors – Chairman Walters, Vice Chairman Bobby Harris, Treasurer Mike Allen, Director Sophie Martin and Director Gary Wright – had designed. “You look back on the 60 years and see just how far Alabaster Water has come,” added Director Martin. “This anniversary kicks off a whole new era of how we’re going to take even better care of our customers.” Alabaster Water has embraced technology to continue its mission to provide a safe, reliable and cost effective water supply to over 32,000 area residents. With these technological advancements, Alabaster Water has been able to maintain some of the lowest water rates in Shelby County. “We have technology that could run a small country, in terms of computer power,” Walters said with a smile. “People don’t think about the complexity of water processing when they turn on a faucet. Due to technology, we are a completely different company than we were 10, maybe 15 years ago.” The company has 27 water professionals that work daily to provide quality water services to the City of Alabaster. They are investing in the education of its water professionals by providing technical and customer service training to enhance the skills and knowledge of its associates.
12 cityofalabaster.com
“Special thanks to the Water Board Manager, Laura Koon,” said Martin appreciatively. “She does an exceptional job running the board. Without her leadership, knowledge and expertise, the board would not be heading in the direction that it’s going.” As a part of the celebration, Alabaster Water will have a tent set up at CityFest providing giveaways and information to help the community understand who they are and how they will serve. “Even the employees are excited about this rebranding,” Walters concluded. “We’re getting ready for the next 60 years.”

Citizen Spotlight Cara Crosslin
Cara Crosslin has been a resident of Alabaster for eleven years. Initially going to the University of Alabama to become an athletic trainer, she found her calling as a physical education teacher and coach. “I originally wanted to stay around Tuscaloosa, and I applied to teach in several different school systems in the area - but not for any Shelby County schools,” shared Cara Crosslin, Thompson High School Athletics Director. “I got a phone call from Ricky Seal, the athletic director then, and he wanted to know if I’d be interested in coming
which I love,” she continued. “I feel like I have a hand in bettering the whole athletic department instead of one organization. I feel like I can give back to more students.” As an athletic director, she attends all home games to support students and coaches, and during football season, she travels with the Tide. When she is not taking care of the athletics department, she drives a school bus for the middle school and 6th grade center in the Alabaster City Schools. “As soon as I got out of college, Ron Griggs found me at the beach on vacation and I have been here ever since,” she concluded with a laughing appreciation. “I am very lucky to have gotten a job right out of college. I will be here until God wants me to be elsewhere.”
Coach Crosslin is known for her love of all her students, current and former.
to interview at Thompson.” Crosslin had never heard of Thompson, so she checked around. Finding scheduling to be a hindrance, she decided not to pursue the opportunity since she already had interviews scheduled for Tuscaloosa. “I was on family vacation at Orange Beach and the condo phone rang. Thinking it was someone else staying at the beach, I answered,” she said laughingly. “Low and behold, it was Ron Griggs, the THS principal.” She racked her brain trying to figure out how in the world he knew she was at Orange Beach and how he got her direct line. Cutting her vacation short, she met with Mr. Griggs, and he hired her on the spot. “All the Tuscaloosa wishes that I thought were my plan, didn’t work out,” Crosslin added with a smile. “God had something better for me here.” Fresh out of the University of Alabama, she landed a head coaching job for the varsity girls basketball team. In her 17 years of employment, she coached varsity girls basketball for 15 years, was head softball coach for six years, and also coached volleyball and golf. Now she is the athletic director. “I’m doing more athletic administration type things, 22 cityofalabaster.com

Business Spotlight Shelby Animal Clinic
516 AL-119, Alabaster, AL 35007
The Shelby Animal Clinic located next door to CVS in Alabaster has been open for about 30 years. Seventeen years ago began Dr. Marsha Zahumensky’s journey with the clinic. “We are a full service clinic. We have full surgery, appointments, exams, dentistry, radiology, boarding, grooming, pet supplies, and occasional adoptions,” began Dr. Marsha Zahumensky. The clinic does not really advertise adoptions simply because “the right person will come for the right pet.” With her 27 years of veterinary medicine experience, she has never felt as though this was an actual job. Meeting different and challenging cases keeps her coming back every day. “When doing surgery, you never know what you’re getting into,” Zahumensky said about her love for the challenge. “You’re expecting one thing, but it might be totally different when you get in there.” The clinic services small animals – dogs, cats, Guinea pigs, birds, hamsters, etc. - ranging from a couple of ounces to approximately 160 pounds. “One interesting thing that everybody got a kick out of was during last year’s Alabaster Christmas Parade, the little miniature horses came in,” she laughed as she retold the story of temporarily boarding the horses until the handler’s ride came. “The little horses were all dressed up in their Christmas outfits and sort of camped out in our reception area and everyone coming in was surprised!” The clinic stays connected with the community as well. It services Licensed & Insured with over 30 Years Experience!

“ I try to be very community oriented. Yes we’re here to do the best medicine we can and serve our clients, but we’re also here to serve the community.”
-Dr. Marsha Zahumensky Warrior – Alabaster City Schools’ mascot and Officer Micco of the Alabaster Police Department. The clinic even gives presentations in the schools where students are introduced to veterinary medicine – pet care, X-rays, surgical preparation, etc. “We have done a lot of service projects with Meadow View Elementary and many organizations in the community,” Zahumensky added. “I try to be very community oriented. Yes we’re here to do the best medicine we can and serve our clients, but we’re also here to serve the community.” She expressed her gratitude for Alabaster’s animal control and how pet conscious the community is. With a community that takes such good care of pets, she hopes that pet owners will take it a step further. “Heart worm disease has become a state problem. In the United States, we are the highest heart worm disease state,” she shared. “Everyone, get your pet tested, and put them on preventative medication. Heart Worm Disease is a dog disease as well as a cat disease.” Heart worm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. In dogs, there are initial signs – lethargic, exercise intolerance, coughing and eventually a fluid in the stomach. The cats are asymptomatic, or show no signs with the possibility of sudden death. “The animal has to be tested first to ensure they are negative and then they are put on heart worm prevention – to be distributed to the animal every month,” she concluded. “The animal needs to be tested yearly, even when they are on the preventative, just to be sure things are going correctly.” The test that the Shelby Animal Clinic uses also screens for tick disease. The Shelby Animal Clinic strives to keep pets their healthiest.

Ready, Train, Fire!
The Alabaster Fire Department took textbook training to the next level in March. Setting ablaze a car in the parking lot of the Alabaster Senior Center, the AFD walked the Alabaster seniors through the process of incident response - from the 911 call to the extinguishment of the flames. “Deputy Fire Marshal, Lieutenant Chip Brantley, does a monthly presentation to them, and this was a culmination of his previous presentations where he had given them an overview on how we operate,” expressed Fire Chief Jim Golden. “What this allowed them to see was all of the pieces connecting together – tying classroom preparation to a visual.”
“ The main thing when we are doing any training like this is that we want to ensure safety, so there’s a lot of planning that goes into it.”
Alabaster Firemen practice extinguishing a car fire.
on outings as well as spending time just getting to know the seniors on a monthly basis, the department wants the community to know that they are here for them. “Most of these people have lived here in Alabaster all of their life and have helped grow this city by laying down the foundation for the rest of us, so we want to make sure that we are giving back,” added Chief Golden. “We really appreciate Alicia Waters and everybody at the center for giving us this opportunity to spend time with them. It’s something we look forward to.” This was the first demonstration of many to come. The AFD is looking forward to doing other presentations and demonstrations with the center to stay connected with the community.
-Fire Chief Jim Golden In February, the AFD held an informational class with the Alabaster seniors to introduce them to terminology, commands, and communications that would assist the firefighters in dowsing the flames quickly and efficiently. Demonstrating the extinguishment of a burning car was a great opportunity to teach them fire safety. “The main thing when we are doing any training like this is that we want to ensure safety, so there’s a lot of planning that goes into it,” he continued. “We have a lot of industry standards – a best practice that we follow that outlines all of the safety precautions and makes sure that all of the participating firefighters understand what the objectives are and what we’re doing.” After devoting a significant amount of time to training the firefighters, the department was able to ensure that everyone would be safe during the educational demonstration. “It’s a good training opportunity for the firefighters as well as public education opportunity,” Chief Golden expressed about the participating firefighters being the same firefighters that were on duty that day. “This gives the seniors a better idea of what their fire department does, and hopefully it demonstrates that we are here for them.” The AFD is here to serve the community well beyond a fire or a medical emergency. Red Carpet Event
Kids First Awareness 21st Century Learning Center rolled out the red carpet for its students back in March. Releasing the student-created song “Be Cool, Stay in School,” students rode in a limousine for the premier of the positive, inspiring music video. Months ago, the students created a positive rap song that embodied the STEM (A) program – Science, Technology, Engineering, Math with Art. Geared toward academic enrichment, students working on this project were provided with hands-on job readiness opportunities by using critical thinking and leadership skills.
skills while building self-confidence and closer connections with the community. “Being a part of this video and being a part of Kids First gives students a chance to build self-esteem, meet a challenge and a goal,” shared Dr. Wayne Vickers, Alabaster City Schools Superintendent. “This video is a big deal. They learn life lessons that will help them be more successful when they graduate high school.” The event celebrated all of their hard work and inspired others to get involved. “It gives them an opportunity to get dressed up and feel special,” said Mayor Marty Handlon with an appreciative smile. “There’s a community here that supports them and encourages them to keep dreaming big and to do all of the work that is necessary to get wherever you want to be. The possibilities are endless as long as you’re willing to work for it.” Since the process was so successful, Kids First, Video Visions and SCAC have already begun the talk of the possibility of doing it again next year. “You never know, this might spark in one of these kids to be a performer or they may even decide that they want to do what I do – be in video or a producer,” Pritchard concluded. “This gives them the opportunity to be exposed and have the community come out and support them!” Special Thanks to Renasant Bank, Alabama State Department of Education, Homework Buddies, the City of Alabaster, the Alabaster Board of Education, Shelby County Commission, and First Methodist Church and Church Family.
Pictured on the Red Carpet is: Gabriel Hale, RayShaun Bivins & DeVandis Caffey.
“Cindy Hawkins, Executive Director of Kids First, and Bruce Andrews, Executive Director of the Shelby County Arts Council (SCAC), contacted me about a song that the kids had produced and were interested in doing a music video,” began Philip Pritchard, owner of Video Visions. “So Mrs. Cindy, as always, used this as a way to give the kids something to strive toward for several months. Once the kids did what they were supposed to do, and met her criteria, they got to be in our video.” Wanting to give back to the community, Video Visions worked closely with Kids First and the SCAC to produce the concept for a professional music video. “Rather than to do something like a class they would forget tomorrow, Philip and I got together to come up with something that they could use as a tool to raise money,” said Bruce Andrews. Andrews pointed out that the one constant job for all nonprofit organizations is fundraising, and he said that this could be an instrument used to generate funds as well as advertising. “We wanted to give Cindy a tool that she could use and get some internet synergy and maybe some YouTube madness,” Andrews continued with a smile. “And when we talked about it, Cindy already had the concept and the vision. She had even thought a step further about a Red Carpet Event!” The whole project was a learning incentive for the students. This fun-filled project provided critical thinking and leadership

Paper and a Handshake
You go through 13 years of preparation for this moment. After years of creating lasting memories, and surviving tests and projects, the only thing standing between you and your future is the final walk to your “piece of paper and a handshake.” Seniors clear out lockers and say final goodbyes to peers and educators to embark upon a journey into the “unknown.” This is an excitingly nerve-wrecking adventure in the life of a dreaming student. Some students have filled their plates with scholarship applications and await that sought-after “acceptance letter.” Other students choose to take the year off and decide what will work best for them, while still other students are putting away the textbooks for good and walking optimistically into the job market. No matter where this complicated thing known as “life” takes them, these seniors will venture off into this big world with the complete support of the City of Alabaster, the Alabaster Board of Education, and the close-knit community. The City of Alabaster is excited to present a total of 446 graduates for the 2015 year. Thompson High School, Kingwood Christian School, and Evangel Classical Christian School are proud to send this generation of well-prepared graduates into higher education and the work force. Autism Awareness
Beautification Award
April was proclaimed Autism Awareness Month. The Autism Society of Alabama remains committed to educating the public about this neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. Mayor Marty Handlon encouraged the citizens of the City of Alabaster to become educated and informed about programs, services, and opportunities to support individuals with autism.
Congratulations to Nancy and Stewart Myers, of 149 Lake Forest Parkway, Alabaster’s Beautification winners for May! The Myers maintain a lovely landscape, reminiscent of a natural, English-style garden. Their entryway immediately says, “Welcome,” and gives any guest a sense of peace. After selecting their home as May’s winner, the Beautification Board discovered that Mr. and Mrs. Myers are the very same proprietors of Myer’s Plants and Pottery. Though they dedicate so much of their time as business owners, they still find ways to keep their own home a lovely place for the community. Thank you, Stewart and Nancy, for keeping Alabaster beautiful!
Mayor RSVP
Holiday Inn Groundbreaking
Mayor Marty Handlon honored Alabaster’s RSVP volunteers on Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service. Showing appreciation for the contributions to the citizens of the community, she read a proclamation and then engaged in community stories over cake.
The Holiday Inn Express just received its building permits and broke ground to start new construction behind Walmart, next door to Candlewood Suites. This four-story hotel will be the prototype of the new Holiday Inn Express design and the City of Alabaster can expect to see many executives from around the country flying in just to see the finished product. Excited about the new hotel, the City of Alabaster looks forward to adding many more places to lodge in the near future.
