A Thousand years of Beauty is a conference about the beauty and the history of the art of Arabic calligraphy. As Design Director at the Walker Art Center, Emmet provides creative leadership and strategic direction for the Walker’s brand identity in all areas of visual communication, including publications, exhibition graphics, special installations, institutional campaigns, web design, and assorted ephemera. He also oversees its publishing program and design studio. He is one of the minds and hands behind Task Newsletter and has recently collaborated with the Near Future Laboratory. Byrne is a graduate of North Carolina State University’s College of Design and served as adjunct faculty at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design from 2008–2004. Since 2007, Oakland artist Lisa Congdon has been illustrating for clients including The Museum of Modern Art, Martha Stewart Living Magazine, The Land of Nod, Harper Collins Publishing, The Obama Campaign, and Simon & Schuster. Best known for her colorful paintings, hand lettering and intricate line drawings, Lisa illustrates books and stationery and licenses her work for fabric, kitchen linens, wallpaper.

Yanone, born in 1982 in Dresden, East Germany, is a young graphic and type designer, multimedia artist, disc jockey and sound system operator currently residing in a commune just outside of Weimar in the heart of Germany. His seven university years also brought him to the design and branding office SYNTAX in Amman, Jordan and to FontShop International in Berlin. There he learned the technical skills necessary to produce high quality typefaces which cemented his ongoing development as a type designer and technician. He completed his studies in Weimar in 2009 with a rather extensive type design project, a Latin/Arabic typeface for Jordans capital Amman. In 2011 Yanone completed the Type & Media type design masters degree at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Den Haag where he tried to improve his calligraphy and type design skills. He is working freelance ever since. Emory Douglas was born May 1943 ,24 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He created the visual identity for the Black Panther Party, and his iconic images came to symbolize the struggles of the movement. As the Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 until the 1980s, Douglas work, described as Militant Chic, featured in most issues of the newspaper The Black Panther. His work is characterized by strong graphic images of young African American men, women and children.

Located in the mighty Pacific Northwest, the Draplin Design Co. proudly rolls up its sleeves on a number of projects related to Print, Identity, Illustration and Gocco Muscle. We make stuff for Coal Headwear, Union Binding Co., Richmond Fontaine, Field Notes, Esquire, Nike, Wired, Timberline, Chunklet, Incase, Giro, Cobra Dogs, Burton Snowboards, Dawes, Patagonia, Target, Megafaun, Danava, Ford Motor Company, Woolrich and even the Obama Administration, if you can believe that. We pride ourselves on a high level of craftsmanship and quality that keeps us up late into the wet Portland night.
Elliott Earls is Artist-in-Residence and head of the Graduate Graphic Design Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Mr. Earls has led the graduate program at Cranbrook since 2001. His work as a designer, performer, and artist is represented in major collections including the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, The Wolfsonian Museum, and The Miami Art Museum. His work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions at Art Basel Miami Beach. As a performance artist Earls was awarded an Emerging Artist Grant from Manhattans prestigious Wooster Group.

WORKSHOPS
Students will enjoy a journey of expressive calligraphy with experimental marks and textures. Simple stamping stroke exercises to unique abstract mark making exercises will be given in smooth transition. Each student will work with their chosen text and create accordions and/or series of art works.

Calligraphic marks can be strong, fluid, sensuous and downright yummy. Each lettering style has a distinct personality that creates a unique mood. Explore the different traits and general structures of pointed brush letter- ing, Roman capitals, Italic and Neuland to gather the essence of each style to develop abstract paintings based on calligraphic form.
