MEADOWRIDGE SCHOOL 2018/19 Impact Report

A Message from

the Director of Development Kim Findlay When I joined Meadowridge School last fall, I was immediately impressed by the school and campus. Now, after my first year, what has impressed me even more is the incredible commitment all staff and faculty have in creating an experiential learning environment where each student can reach their full potential. A place where students learn to think, communicate, question, research, collaborate, and become independent. A place where learning integrates the head, the heart, and the hands, so that they can learn to live well, with others and for others. The Advancement team has the privilege of working with all members of the Meadowridge community, raising funds to support our students and to fulfill our school’s Vision. For our school to continue to provide a transformational educational experience for every student, we rely on financial contributions of all sizes from our entire community—including parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, staff, faculty, and friends. Our goal is to build a culture of philanthropy through participation by as many as possible. Our school was built on philanthropy from past families, and we have grown to become a world class school. Each generation shares the responsibility of continuing this tradition. Every donation, no matter the amount, has an impact. It funds buildings, creates programs, and provides teachers with funds to purchase additional resources. We are extraordinarily thankful to those who chose to invest in our students making this past year’s fundraising extremely successful, raising over $1 million – a record high for the school. A great start towards bringing our new Campus Expansion Plan to fruition. We look forward to working with everyone in our community. Please feel free to reach out to me or one of my colleagues with any questions, or better yet, come visit us. We’d be delighted to talk with you. Gratefully,

Kim Findlay Director of Development kim.findlay@meadowridge.bc.ca

ORIENTEERING KITS

DEMONSTRATION FOREST

Two orienteering kits were purchased as initiation to our upcoming orienteering race. With control cards, orienteering markers, compasses, map measures and more, our students will be wellequipped to tackle this engaging challenge.

Trees, understory, and other resources for the Demonstration Forest, an initiative aimed at bringing the north forest back to its natural state. Through planning and planting the Demonstration Forest, students engage in ecological restoration, develop a connection to place and, ultimately, grow a sense of empathy for the world we inhabit.

JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN CAMERAS

NEW BLEACHERS & AUDIO-VISUAL EQUIPMENT

Cameras to help bring the ‘How We Express Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry to life. With new classroom cameras, students can learn about other people’s perspectives while exploring their own through photography.

New audio-visual equipment and custom bleachers to be used by everyone, for everything; these new resources will serve students during PHE classes, team practices, and clubs, and serve us all during all-school assemblies, special occasions, ceremonies and convocations.

Enhancing Expressiveness in the ELC Expression takes on many forms, something students learn in our ‘How We Express Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry. Taking on the role of roaming photographer, students learn how photography expresses an opinion or feeling of a moment, place, or event. After learning how to care for their cameras, students venture into the forest and across campus to capture the world through their eyes. After learning a bit about their own perspectives, students learn about other people’s perspectives and why they might capture a photo differently. By capturing their own memories, students not only develop a new skill, but a new way to express themselves.

Supporting Exploration and Imagination in Visual Arts I want to thank all who continue to donate time and resources, and who always are ready to step up when needed. I am particularly grateful to those who have given to the Annual Fund. Your donations have been crucial in fully funding a class set of iPads for High School Visual Art students. This additional digital media has been such a help to our students in so many ways and has allowed creative options that were not previously available to everyone. Along with the iPads, we were able to purchase licencing for a variety of programs, from drawing to animation.

The drawing applications allowed students to approach their work without the fear of making mistakes (thanks to the ‘undo’ button), allowing their understanding of artistic strategies and technical skills to progress at a much quicker pace. These iPads were put to immediate use upon arrival! Some Grade 10 students used them to create illustrations for books that were published for their Personal Projects. Other Grade 10 students used them to plan their abstract pastel and aquarium paintings more effectively, as students could upload photos of their images and work out a wide variety of compositional strategies virtually before committing their final ideas to their actual piece. The drawing applications allow students to approach their work without the fear of making mistakes (thanks to the ‘undo’ button), allowing their understanding of artistic strategies and technical skills to progress at a much quicker pace. The educational Art apps help students to understand colour mixing, the behaviour of colour, and the relationships between colour and value. Most of the DP 12 students used the iPads to plan for their exhibition, as they were able to import images of their exhibition space and maneuver their works virtually within it. Some even used them to create entire pieces, which were then printed on posters or canvas. From patterns to fabric designs, to propaganda posters to digitally collaged surreal art, students were quick to gain confidence using an array of new digital tools and adapt their learning to it. Next year, students will be able to take these iPads on the art field trips to gather photo evidence and to sketch on site, collecting valuable visual resources to work with back in the studio when creating their own pieces. As you can see, your donations really do make a difference! They provide unique but equal opportunities that all students can access. I look forward to seeing the new ways students will use these iPads in the future! - MRS. RHONDA LAURIE, MYP & DP Visual Arts Teacher

From left to right: Alina, Zhanmao, Doris and Hannah (Grade 2)

Donor Story

Giving From The Heart Zhanmao He and Doris Dong asked just one thing of daughter Hannah on her first day at Meadowridge. Then in Kindergarten, it was Hannah’s first-ever, ‘first day’, an important day, and of all the wisdom and wishes they might have shared, they chose just one: treat the school like it’s your home. These words say a lot about Zhanmao and Doris, about who they are as people, as parents, and as philanthropists. For the couple, it’s all about giving back, about treating others and the world around them with care. It is this calling that they hope their daughters will aspire to, and what they hope to instill early on. For Zhanmao, it’s a familiar notion. Growing up in China, it is one he heard many times from his own parents. It is one that he carried throughout school, into his career, and as he started a family of his own. “Because our wealth comes from society,” he explains, “we give back to it.” Together, the family supports many charities, including religious, health, and educational initiatives. Now, the pair hopes to pass on this same calling to daughters Hannah and Alina. Over the last three years, Hannah has taken to both her school and her familial calling. Since that first day in Kindergarten, the young learner has shown a special care to her school, treating it like home. She cleans up litter during recess, consoles friends in need, and is the first to greet a new classmate. A happy, social student, Hannah is quick with a smile or to lend a hand. Even at home, she encourages her own parents to get involved and give back to her school. Inspired by their daughter, by both her words and her experience, it was important for the family to give back to Meadowridge some way. They wanted more students to experience what their daughter had; a positive experience, with growth and development and joy. By helping the school’s expansion, they could do just that. Zhanmao and Doris, along with daughters Hannah and Alina, were proud to donate towards the classroom complex, a gift that will not only allow more students to join our school, but will enrich the experience for all. For them, the development of our school is an exciting time, one that they’re “very glad” to be a part of. Hannah, too, is excited to be a part of the journey, closely watching the building’s progress as she heads to and from music and gym and assemblies. “She pays very close attention,” her parents smile, “and she keeps us updated; she’ll tell us they’re installing the glass today! or the walls are going up!” Inspiring their own daughter’s passion for philanthropy, the family hopes their gift will inspire others in that same way. “Giving should come from the heart,” Zhanmao concludes.

What’s Next? We’re a school built by audacity. In 1985, starting an independent school in rural Maple Ridge was a bold pursuit, but our founding families persevered. Our founding families had the audacity to see such a vision through, a vision that has now been shaped and carried by all those who came next. Together, we have built a world class school. And together, we still share the audacity to grow. The Audacity Campaign for Meadowridge School will help carry the vision of our families—both past and present—forward, growing our campus, our community, and our students’ opportunities.

OUR MISSION Learning to live well, with others and for others, in a just community.

OUR VISION People are drawn to our school from around the world. In the spirit of active collaboration with teachers, peers, and our community, we learn how to care for ourselves and for others. Knowing that change is the only certainty, we engage with challenging and complex questions effectively and creatively. Through outstanding teaching, programs, and facilities, Meadowridge develops in us the confidence not only to meet the future, but also to create it.
