mallow castle An Introduction

D

Oxfordshire; they were all soldiers, and five of them died on active service in either Ireland or the Netherlands. Sir John, nicknamed “Black Jack”, was the most illustrious of these and is now reckoned by historians to have been perhaps the ablest of all the Queen’s generals. The Irish wars were fought with particular savagery, and Sir John acquired a reputation for brutality when in 1575 he and Francis Drake captured Rathlin Island off the coast of Antrim: the garrison surrendered after a four-day siege but were all put to the sword, and the 300-400 women and children who had taken refuge in caves on the island were hunted down and killed. After many years of campaigning, “Black Jack” died, not in battle but of his old wounds, at Mallow Castle in 1597. The Irish said of him that his military successes had come only because “he had sold himself to the devil, who carried him off unexpectedly”. Sir Thomas Norreys succeeded his brother as Lord President of Munster, and was appointed Lord Justice of Ireland soon after. He too spent much of his time fighting the Irish rebels. In 1599, during a skirmish with the Burkes in Co. Limerick, he received “a thrust from a pike in the neck where the jawbone meets the upper part of the neck”; he withdrew to Mallow Castle and died there. He was survived by his widow Bridget, who fought hard against greedy rivals of her late husband to retain the estate for the heir, their little daughter Elizabeth, a godchild of the Queen. The christening robe sent by the Queen as a present was preserved at Mallow Castle until the departure of the family in 1984, and there is a strong tradition that the Queen also sent two white harts to augment the herd of fallow deer which are still such a memorable feature at Mallow.

uring the Middle Ages the town and manor of Mallow formed an important part of the vast estates of the FitzGeralds, Earls of Desmond. Here, on the northern bank of the Blackwater, they built a castle from which they could control both the town on one side and the river crossing on the other. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth the castle belonged to the younger brother of the fourteenth earl, known to history as Sir John of Desmond. These were turbulent times, with the FitzGeralds under pressure both from their great rivals the Butler Earls of Ormond and from the English government in Dublin Castle. There were several revolts, culminating in 1579 with the outbreak of a major rebellion. Sir John of Desmond, lord of Mallow, was probably the ablest of the rebel leaders. He was also one of the most ruthless, assassinating in their beds two English envoys sent to negotiate with him. He was killed in a skirmish in 1582 and his brother the Earl was hunted down and slain in the following year - the rebellion had lasted four years and resulted in the devastation of the province of Munster and the overthrow of the house of Desmond. The estates of the FitzGeralds and their allies were confiscated and allocated to English officials cheerfully known as “Undertakers” because they undertook to settle their lands with English Protestant colonists. This process, known as the Munster Plantation, transformed the demography of the south of Ireland. Sir John Norreys, the Lord President of Munster, made sure that Mallow with its important river crossing was granted to him. His patent, issued in 1584, began an association between Mallow and the Norreys-Jephson family that was to last exactly four hundred years. Two years later, Sir John transferred Mallow to his brother Sir Thomas. The six Norreys or Norris brothers came from Rycote in 3

generation from 1692 down to 1859 a Jephson represented the borough of Mallow in parliament, and the archives include much documentation on the running of elections from 1781 onwards. This system of private patronage existed well into the 19th century, when such duties were taken over and the by an expanding government and civil service. In particular, we should note the developments throughout the long reign of Charles Denham Orlando Jephson, who was created a baronet in 1838 and known henceforth as Sir Denham Jephson-Norreys. Sir Denham succeeded to the estate in 1813 upon the deaths in rapid succession of his cousin Denham Jephson the younger and his father Col. William Jephson, and “reigned” for 75 years until his death in 1888. The Jephsons were not great landowners – in 1878 Sir Denham was the owner of only 700 acres of land with an annual valuation of £3267 – but their intimate involvement with the town and Manor of Mallow was very special. To judge from the voluminous documentation from his lifetime, Sir Denham took a personal interest in every aspect of life in Mallow, even to the extent of designing – with or without the help of professionals – houses for his tenants and some of the most important public buildings in the town such as the Clock House and Spa House. Sir Denham also transformed the family residence from a rather plain, rambling series of former stable buildings into the impressive mansion we see today. In this project he was to a large extent his own architect. This was a period which saw the erection in Ireland of many pretentious pseudo-castles in the Gothic style, but Sir Denham opted instead for the tasteful recreation of a Tudor-style manor-house. Sir Denham did not finish his work on the castle. This was left to Brigadier Maurice Jephson, who completed the task in the 1950s, using the stones set aside for the purpose over a century previously. The Brigadier took a keen interest in his family’s history. He built a little museum between the medieval castle of the FitzGeralds and the new castle, while an upper room in the main residence was used to house the family monuments. He went to considerable trouble putting the Jephson papers into order, marshalling thousands of records and repairing many severely damaged documents. And in 1964 he produced a substantial family history, An Anglo-Irish Miscellany: Some records of the Jephsons of Mallow. In this work he was able to draw liberally on family correspondence, including letters received from some historically illustrious personages such as Daniel O’Connell, William Smith O’Brien, H.M. Stanley the explorer and Sir Roger Casement. Several junior members of the Jephson family have made a name for themselves. In particular, William Jephson, younger brother of Captain John of Mallow, was an enthusiastic supporter of William of Orange. When the Prince of Orange landed at Torbay in November 1688, Jephson was one of the cavalcade that rode down from London to meet him. The new King immediately appointed him his private secretary, and some months later he became Secretary to the Treasury. He was one of the four advisers on whom William III most relied, and the King presented him with his life-size portrait by Kneller, which until recently hung at Mallow Castle. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by his death in 1691 at the age of fifty. Robert Jephson (1737-1803) benefited from the patronage

In 1607 Elizabeth Norreys married Major-General Sir John Jephson, who thus succeeded to the estate in right of his wife. The medieval castle of the FitzGeralds of Desmond was abandoned at this time and replaced by an impressive fortified mansion which combined many-gabled roofs and large mullioned windows with defensive features such as pistol-holes. Elizabeth Norreys died in 1623 and Sir John Jephson in 1638. He was succeeded by his son Major-General William Jephson, who died in 1658. Mallow was deeply involved in the wars and rebellions of the 1640s. Jephson was active on the parliamentary side, and in 1656 proposed in the Commons that Cromwell be made King. On the failure of his efforts he recommended that the letters “k-i-n-g” be removed from the alphabet”! Captain John Jephson owned Mallow from 1658 until his death in 1693. The 1660s were a period of rebuilding, but a fresh upheaval followed with the outbreak of the war between James II and William III in 1689. Mallow was the scene of heavy fighting for control of the strategic Blackwater crossing in 1690, and whether or not the tradition is true that James II personally ordered the burning of the castle, it is certain that the destruction caused to town and manor at this time was severe: the leases among the family papers for the 1690s and even into the early 1700s refer frequently to burnt houses and destroyed premises, and a deed of 1697 specifically mentions the castle ruins. After the war the Jephsons did not rebuild their Jacobean mansion, which they evidently considered too severely damaged. They moved instead into the stable buildings, which they converted into their eighteenth-century residence. The mansion remains today a picturesque addition to the demesne, and is a national monument to which the public have right of access. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Jephsons were in the main resident landlords who maintained a close interest in the running of Mallow. The estate papers, now held by University College Cork, show how detailed was the control the family held over the manor and town; from the 1660s until the death of Brigadier Jephson in 1968 there is an almost unbroken run of leases to tenants. They were also responsible for the administration of the local courts; the collection of taxes; and the maintenance of public buildings, roads, bridges, services and so on. The execution of these duties was the task of a manorial official called the Seneschal, who was appointed to hold office during pleasure. Moreover, in virtually every Imperfections Not Stated

Mr. McGinn was a member of the board of directors of the American Ireland Fund and actively promoted relations between Ireland and America. On July 4, 1984 the McGinns opened the castle to the public for the first time in its history and donated funds received to local organizations. A public celebration was held on the grounds to commemorate the date where the colourful Mr. McGinn, in top hat, read the U.S. Declaration of Independence, and musical groups, majorettes and children performed. In 1987 the couple hosted Tip O’Neill, Speaker of the U.S House of Representatives and held a public reception on the front lawn. Mr. McGinn having served two presidents, was an influential figure on Capitol Hill for many years. Judy McGinn also worked for the House of Representatives before moving to Mallow. She was the catalyst and organizer of the Playground in the Park, and brought President Mary Robinson to Mallow for the opening. The McGinns and their sons divided their time between Mallow and their lakeside residence in Skaneateles, New York State. Mr. McGinn died at home in early 2008. Finally, no Irish castle is complete without at least one ghost, and here Mallow has not been lacking. American guests in recent years were occasionally startled to catch sight of “Lady Anna” brushing her long locks in their bedroom. More creepily, the death of each successive head of the Jephson family was said to have been presaged by the appearance of a large white rat! The origin of this tale is that many years ago the Mr Jephson of the day had all but ruined the family by his spendthrift lifestyle, when a mysterious stranger arrived at the Castle and offered him a bag of gold coins. All he had to do in return was to treat the stranger’s pet white rat as a member of the family, give it a place at table, and feed it there until its owner should return to claim it. Having nothing to lose, Mr Jephson willingly gave his word, and from then on he prospered, as did the rat, until the day came when Mr Jephson could withstand the mockery of his friends no longer, and the rat came to a sticky end. The stranger, of course, returned to claim his pet, and on learning of its untimely demise put a curse on the family! Julian C. Walton March 2011

of Viscount Townsend, who on becoming Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1767 gave him the sinecure post of Master of the Horse. This gave him the financial stability needed to involve himself in the theatre, and he was the author of a number of plays – Braganza, The Count of Narbonne, The Hotel or the Servant with two Masters – which, though largely forgotten today, were included in stock collections of British drama published during the 19th century. Arthur Jermy Mounteney Jephson (1858-1908) achieved fame for his part in H.M. Stanley’s expedition to relieve “Mehmet Emin Pasha” (Izaak Eduard Schnitzer), governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria on the Upper Nile. This involved travelling up the Congo river and through the Ituri forest, a hazardous journey in which two-thirds of the expeditionary force were lost. At one stage Emin and Jephson were imprisoned by mutinous troops. On his return to England Jephson wrote an account of his adventures, and he was awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society. His diaries, published in 1969, confirm the horrific nature of the expedition – indeed, as Jephson had no previous experience of tropical travel or warfare, his survival was itself miraculous. On Sunday 24 March 1968 Brigadier Jephson and his wife Eileen left Cork Airport aboard an Aer Lingus Viscount bound for London. They never reached their destination. Not far from the Tuskar Rock off the Wexford coast the plane plunged into the sea; there were no survivors, and few bodies were recovered. The cause of the disaster remains a mystery, though there were conspiracy theories involving rogue RAF missiles and the like. The town of Mallow was plunged into mourning. For many generations the Jephson family had been closely involved with every aspect of the life of the community, and the Brigadier and his wife had been particularly loved. Mallow Castle and estate passed to a cousin, a retired naval commander also named Maurice. In 1984 he sold the castle, which thus passed out of the hands of the family after exactly four hundred years. The castle and demesne was acquired by an American couple, Michael and Judy McGinn, of Washington, D.C.

* Catherine Yale was the daughter of Elihu Yale, after which Yale University is named. Elihu Yale was also a governor of the British East India Company, President of Fort George in Madras. In 1713, Elihu Yale made a donation of 32 books to a small learning insititution that had been founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School of Connecticut. In 1718 Yale was approached once more to help fund a new building in New Haven; the generous donation consisted of books and pictures, including a portrait of George I, and a variety of textiles from the East Indies, which realized approximately £800 in Boston. The New Haven building was named Yale as a token of gratitude, and by 1745 the entire institution was named Yale University. Catherine Yale's married name became North. Her husband, Dudley North, was a grandson of Dudley North, 4th Baron North, and the nephew of the Hon. Sir Francis North, 4th Baron North. It is from this branch of the North Family that the Earls of Guilford are associated; Dudley North was the second cousin of Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford. Dudley North held the office of Member of Parliament for Oxford and lived at Glenham, Suffolk, England. The titles of the Earls come from a town in Surrey, which is now spelt Guildford.
