Tracey Kee
The Kee File Age: 45 Hometown: Richmond, Virginia
Head Coach
High School: Saint Gertrude (Va.) H.S.
Second Year East Carolina
Alma Mater East Carolina University, 1990 (B.S.) East Carolina University, 1995 (M.E.)
Tracey Kee, who will begin her second year in charge in 201415, was hired in August of 2013, and she became the fourth Mean Green softball head coach in the current era. In her first season with the program, Kee took the Mean Green to record heights, including the most wins in the team’s 10-year history with 31 in 2014. Her effect on the unit was seen right away as she established her more advanced defensive schemes and took a hands-on role with the pitching staff from the start. Under her tutelage, senior pitcher Ashley Kirk broke the North Texas single-season wins record with 22 victories. She also set the single-season strikeout record with 214. As a whole, Kee led North Texas to several team records, which included most conference wins (14), most runs scored (272), most RBI (242) and highest batting average (.279). The Mean Green also saw four players named AllConference USA, and junior center fielder Kat Strunk was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year, the first specialty award in program history. “After conducting a nationwide search and doing our due diligence, we are excited to introduce Tracey Kee as our new head women’s softball coach,” North Texas Athletics Director Rick Villarreal said. “To acquire a three-time Conference USA Coach of the Year and NCAA participant, who has had several seasons with over 50 wins against top-level competition will help us take a step to the next level. Her team’s accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and in the community are exemplary of the success we want our student athletes to achieve.” Kee spent 26 seasons at East Carolina as a player, assistant and head coach. Following a standout playing career and successful six-year run as the assistant coach, she was given the reigns to the Pirates prior to the 1997 season and did not look back. She earned Coach of the Year honors four times including three in C-USA. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to lead the North Texas softball program,” Kee said. “From the
moment I stepped on campus, I knew Rick’s vision of Mean Green athletics was something I wanted to be a part of.” In 16 seasons as the East Carolina head coach, she compiled a 684-362 record, and guided the Pirates to four NCAA Tournament appearances including three in her last five years. Kee and her staff were also named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mideast Region Coaching Staff-of-the-Year honoree twice. “I believe North Texas’ softball program is on the cusp of doing great things,” Kee said. “With continued commitment and hard work, this program will be one of pride, success and tradition.” She also pulled in nine league championships, with back-to-back C-USA Tournament titles in 2010 and 2011. From 2009 to 2011, no Conference USA program won more games than East Carolina’s 125. ECU recorded 41 victories in 2011 to become only the fourth team in C-USA history to win 40 or more games in three-straight seasons. Kee’s clubs have reached the 40-victory plateau 12 of her 16 seasons. Four times her teams have tallied 50 or more wins, including the 2000 group she directed to a schoolrecord 60 victories. Personally, she reached the 650win threshold as a head coach in 2011. ECU won its first C-USA titles in 2010, claiming both the regular season and tournament titles before repeating as tournament champions in 2011. In just her first season as head coach in 1997, Kee’s team posted a 49-24 record, and she was named Big South Coach-of-the-Year. Two seasons later, in 1999, East Carolina won 50 games and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Under Kee’s tutelage, many players have earned all-conference and all-region honors. During her time in the Big South, she led 11 all-conference players, two rookie-of-the-year selections, the league’s tournament MVP, Denise Reagan, in 1999 and the two-time league player-of-the-year in Polonius (1998 and 1999).

records history
The new era of Mean Green softball started with a big swing of the bat. North Texas not only recorded its first hit in its opening game against nationally-ranked Texas A&M on Feb. 4, 2004, the Mean Green posted its first home run as well. Freshman Susan Waters gave North Texas a few firsts - hit, home run, scored run, RBI - along with tying the game at 1-1. The Aggies went on to win the game, 6-1, but it marked the beginning of a Mean Green roller coaster ride, full of the highs and lows that would accompany a first-year program. In May of 2002, North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal announced that the Mean Green would field a Div. I softball team for the first time in 16 years. The team would assemble in the fall of 2003 with the spring of 2004 being the team’s first season. Denia Park in Denton was selected as the team’s home field and was the site of North Texas’ first win of the 2004 season. When North Texas opened its season against Texas A&M in 2004, it marked the second time in school history that North Texas has sponsored softball. For four years from 1985-88, NT sanctioned a team while it was a member of the Southland Conference. The program struggled with limited scholarships and four head coaches in as many seasons, compiling an overall record of 37-136 and going 11-38 in conference play. Highlights from that era are few and far between, although the Lady Eagles, as they were called then, left a few marks worth remembering. In 1985, Jearlynn Johnson shared the conference lead in home runs. That same season, pitcher Gayle Edwards shared the league record for most complete games in a tournament. In 1988, Kris Fletcher led the Southland in doubles.
2004 The Mean Green swept a doubleheader against Northwood on Feb. 10 at Denia Park, snapping a six-game losing streak. Freshman pitcher Katy Maxey won the first game, 3-1, while junior lefthander Mandy Hacker shutout Northwood in the nightcap, 5-0. The friendly confines of Denia Park proved to be just that for the Mean Green; NT went 13-13 at home. On the road, North Texas managed only nine wins with seven of them coming down the stretch. The Mean Green’s schedule proved to be a daunting task. The NT squad faced nine teams ranked in the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 Poll, including No.1 UCLA and No. 2 Arizona.
2005 North Texas returned all its starters for the Mean Green’s second season and a new head coach, Kelly Burns. Highlights from the 2005 season include the capturing of the Tulsa Invite championship, six conference victories and two wins in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Notable Firsts In 2004 The Mean Green’s first hit of the 2004 inaugural season was a big one - a home run by freshman Susan Waters that tied the game against No. 18 Texas A&M by the score of 1-1 on Feb. 4. With the home run Waters also posted the team’s first run scored and RBI. Other firsts during NT’s opening game: At-Bat: Katy Maxey Single: Stephanie Cranmer Walk: Katy Maxey Stolen Base: Ana Vega Putout: Heather Bostic First Pitch: Mandy Hacker First Strikeout: Mandy Hacker The Mean Green’s first double of the 2004 season came against Pacific on Feb. 6. Junior Ana Vega posted her first hit in a Mean Green uniform with the tally. North Texas held its first lead in its fifth game against Northwestern State on Feb. 7. The Mean Green held a 2-0 lead after two innings of play. Northwestern State came back to defeat NT, 7-2. North Texas won its first game in the new era of Mean Green softball on Tuesday, Feb. 10 against Northwood. Katy Maxey secured the first victory for NT.
Senior Stephanie Cranmer was named All-Sun Belt both of her years at North Texas and left the program as the team’s leader in batting average, hits, multiple-hit games and on-base percentage.
Kelei Walker posted NT’s first triple in the new program on Feb. 15 against UMKC.
2006
Susan Waters became the first Mean Green player to hit two home runs in a single game on Saturday, March 20 against NW OSU.
In its third year, the Mean Green softball team continued to take steps towards becoming a top program. Its largest steps came on the offensive side, where North Texas set a number of individual and team records. In 2006, the Mean Green set or tied eight individual batting game records and four team batting game records. Almost all the players saw their offensive numbers jump dramatically from the previous year. Susan Waters became the most decorated player in the young history of the program. She set the single-season home run record at North Texas in 2006 with 18 long balls and is the career record holder with 49. She set 10 single-season marks in 2006 and currently holds 11 career records at North Texas. She was named first-team All-Sun Belt two years in a row and became the first softball student-athlete at North Texas to be named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in 2006. As a team, the Mean Green hit 44 home runs in 60 games in 2006, almost doubling last year’s total of 23. Sophomore Kristina Fowler hit the team’s 44th home run during the tournament. The three-run home run helped defeat Western Kentucky for the second time. Fowler proved to be a thorn in the Hilltoppers’ side; she posted the game-winning hit in both wins against Western Kentucky. She also picked up both of the wins in the circle in those games. She finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and was named to the all-tournament team. She led the team with five runs batted in during the tournament and batted .400 in the four games. Classmate Katya Muller joined her on the all-tournament team. She finished the season on a 13-game hitting streak, setting a school record. She posted three two-hit games and led the team with seven hits in the tournament. The shortstop batted .538 in the tournament and finished her sophomore season hitting with a .332 average. The .332 average is a single-season best. Her 69 hits during the season is also a single-season record, surpassing Stephanie Cranmer’s 66 hits set in 2004.
2007 In 2007, the Mean Green played in its brand new softball complex; Lovelace Stadium. Located in Mean Green Village next to the soccer field, Lovelace Stadium provided a true home-field advantage for the Mean Green. The team also had a locker room and training faciliites near the field. Also in 2007, North Texas picked up two historic wins. The Mean Green defeated Texas Tech, 4-2, on the road. In the Sun Belt Tournament, NT upset top-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette. The victory against the Ragin’ Cajuns was the first in the series for the Mean Green and handed ULL its first loss in Sun Belt tournament history. North Texas placed two players on the All-Sun Belt First Team. For the first time in the history of the program,

two players were named all-conference. Susan Waters was named to the first-team All-Sun Belt for the second year in a row, while Katya Muller received AllSun Belt honors for the first time. Waters and Muller led the Mean Green in most offensive categories. In her final season, Waters set four single-season season records. The third baseman finished the season batting a school-record .341. She also set records with 45 run scored, 23 walks and an on-base percentage of .422. In total, she holds 13 single-season records. Muller had another stellar season for the Mean Green. She led the team with 63 hits, 13 doubles and two triples. She finished just behind Waters with a .332 hitting percentage, matching her sophomore year mark. She posted seven home runs, three of which were hit against Louisiana-Lafayette during the regular season. The Mean Green also continued to be a national leader in double plays. Throughout the season, North Texas was ranked first or second in double plays per game.
2008 TJ Hubbard, an assistant for the Mean Green through its entire existance, started his first year at the helm of North Texas for the 2007-08 season. The 2008 team won a school record 27 games and picked up wins against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Creighton. Lovelace Stadium proved to be a home-field advantage with the Mean Green going 14-9 in its home venue. Katya Muller and Mallory Cantler were named firstteam all-conference with Muller earning the nod for the second straight year. Muller left the program as the school’s all-time hit leader. Cantler was also named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team, and finished her freshman campaign by setting single-season records in batting average, hits and doubles. As a team, North Texas set team bests in wins, batting average, runs scored, hits, doubles, total bases, slugging percentage and RBI.
2009 In 2009, North Texas became the fastest team to reach the 20-win mark, posted the second-most wins and the best winning percentage in school history. For the third straight year, the Mean Green had two players named to the All-Sun Belt team. Mallory Cantler was named to the first team for the second straight year, while Mariza Martinez was named to the second team. Martinez also became the first North Texas player to be named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Central Region First Team.
2010 North Texas recorded many firsts in 2010: its first winning season (29-20), the most wins in school history (29), a school-record 52 home runs. The Mean Green also picked up big wins against nationallyranked opponents: No. 15 Texas and No. 24 Baylor. North Texas posted its highest finish in the Sun Belt (third) and tied its best finish in the conference tournament (2-2, third). For the first time, the Mean Green had three players
named to the All-Sun Belt team. Mallory Cantler was named to the first team for the third straight year, while Mariza Martinez was named to the second team a second straight time. Ashley Lail became the first North Texas pitcher to receive all-conference honors after being named to the second team. Fellow senior pitcher Kayla Lawson was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team after picking up the win against Florida Atlantic in the tournament. Lawson had her best year, posting a 2.21 ERA and an 8-4 record. Head coach TJ Hubbard picked up his 60th career win in 2010, becoming the winningest softball coach at North Texas. He finished the season with a winloss record of 82-81 after three years as head coach.
2011 The 2011 softball season was a roller-coaster ride for the Mean Green, full of ups and downs and twists and turns. A senior-heavy team was full of experience and the early part of the season showcased that potential. A tournament title and big home wins propelled the Mean Green up, but tough losses on the road and shaky play against conference opponents brought the season to an early halt with a miss of the conference tournament. The Mean Green continued to set team and individual records under head coach T.J. Hubbard. North Texas set two single-game individual records and tied six, and recorded five single-game team records. Seven career records were set in 2011. Cantler and Martinez went on to leave North Texas as two of the most decorated North Texas softball players in school history. Cantler became the first softball player at North Texas to earn all-Sun Belt honors four consecutive years. She earned first-team honors her first three years and capped her senior season with second-team accolades. Cantler set the career doubles record in 2011 and came up two hits shy of tying the career hit record at North Texas. She finished second in career hits and RBI and left North Texas holding five career batting records and four season batting records. The senior led the Mean Green in 2011 with a .319 batting average, 51 hits, 32 RBI and nine home runs. Martinez set the career runs record in 2011 against South Alabama. She also holds the career stolen base record and is second in career home runs with 36. She finished second on the team in 2011 with eight. She left North Texas with her name in the top 3 of 14 career school records.
2012 The 2012 Mean Green softball team won eight of its last 10 games to record its second winning season in school history at 28-26-1. Faced with one of its toughest schedules, North Texas struggled against the nationally-ranked teams but won the majority of its games at home and set a program best in conference play. North Texas entered the conference tournament in Florida on a six-game winning streak as the No. 4 seed. After dropping the opening game against WKU, North Texas responded with two wins and lost in the semi-finals to top-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette. The third-place finish tied a program best.
the second fewest. Only the 2010 team accomplished more than the 2012 squad. In conference play, North Texas set a program record with 13 wins. The Mean Green set four team records in 2012: runs scored, RBI, walks and strikeouts. The records epitomized the team’s season. Head coach T.J. Hubbard emphasized patience at the plate in 2012, and the result was a lot of walks and more at-bats, which led to more runs and RBI. The pitching squad had one of its best seasons, recording the most strikeouts in a single-season and the second-lowest ERA. Ashley Kirk was named to the all-tournament team at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, leading the Mean Green to its two wins. Maddelyn Fraley produced one of the top singleseason performances at North Texas. She capped her season by receiving first-team All-Sun Belt honors at designated player. She finished her senior season by leading the team with a .322 batting average, 13 home runs and 47 RBI. Fraley knocked in the second-most RBI in school history and third most home runs.
2013 The 2013 Mean Green softball team won nine of its last 12 regular season games to record its third winning season in school history at 29-24. North Texas also tied a school record for most wins in a single season with 29. Playing in its final Sun Belt Conference season, North Texas faced one of the most competitive conference seasons in recent history. The Mean Green recorded a 12-9 record in the conference, tying its second-best mark in school history. North Texas swept its last two conference series to move up the rankings and earn a No. 4 seed at its final Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The top three teams in the Sun Belt (USA, WKU, and ULL) went on to receive bids to the NCAA Tournament. North Texas went 1-8 against those teams, placing fourth in the regular season and tying for third in the conference tournament. It took eight innings but North Texas won its opening game at the conference tournament in Troy, Ala. against FAU for the first time since 2007. The Mean Green fell to WKU in the second round but came back to eliminate Troy from the tournament with a 5-2 victory. USA came up with four runs in the fourth inning to knock the Mean Green out of the tournament in the semifinals. WKU and USA went on to face each other in the conference championship. Brooke Foster was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team for her performance in Troy. Foster led the team in the tournament with five RBI. The honor capped a stellar season for the junior. In 2013, Foster led the team with a .377 batting average, 66 hits and 25 multi-hit games. She was second on the team with 10 doubles and 14 stolen bases and third with 31 RBI. She was one of three players to be named to the allconference team, tying another school record. Ashley Kirk was named second-team all-conference, while Foster and freshman Taylor Schoblocher were named to the second-team at-large team.
The 28 wins were the second-most victories compiled in a single-season in school history and the 26 losses

records history 2014 In its first season under head coach Tracey Kee, the Mean Green softball team made history, shattering several team records, receiving three all-conference selections and being awarded its first specialty award recipient en route to a program-best 31 games. As a unit, North Texas broke several team records including runs scored (272), RBI (242), batting average (.272) and on-base percentage (.370). The Mean Green earned a No. 5 seed in its first Conference USA Championship and lost, 7-1, in its semi-final game against eventual champion Tulsa. Leading North Texas in her final year was senior ace pitcher Ashley Kirk, who thoroughly shattered every major North Texas pitching stat during her 22-win season, a program-best mark. She struck out 214 batters, breaking her own single-season team record, and she concluded her career with 61 wins in 100 starts, both team records. She was named second-team allConference USA. Senior Brooke Foster, the Mean Green’s sole firstteam all-conference USA and C-USA All-Tournament Team selection, finished her illustrious career by setting the all-time hits record (225) in the C-USA Championship against Florida Atlantic. Furthermore, Foster finished her final home game in epic fashion, hitting a walk-off grand slam to clinch the series over No. 18 Tulsa. Transfer Kat Strunk wasted no time making her mark for North Texas upon her arrival from local NCTC. She etched her way into the single-season record books with her team-high 42 RBI, and she was given the program’s first specialty award when the league voted her the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year. She was also named second-team all-conference USA for her efforts.
