Two Meath Cinemas Turned Down By Board By Louise Walsh

TWO SEPARATE applications for new cinemas in a Meath town have been shot down by planning bosses in the same week. The proposals for a total of 3,347 seat multi-screen cinemas in Navan were refused planning permission by the national appeals board, An Bord Pleanala in recent days. Flix Cinema and Leisure Ltd had hoped to change a warehouse to a ten screen multiplex cinema with 1,464 seats at the Navan Retail Park, just 1.5km outside the town. Tymonview Ltd were also given the red light for their plans for a nine screen cinema with 1,883 seats and 250 space carpark at The Mollies, Abbeylands which is 400m from the town centre. Flix Cinema argued that the purpose of its development was “to address the significant leakage of trade from Navan and other Meath towns” to areas such as Blanchardstown, Mullingar and Drogheda. However

board inspector Stephen Kay raised concerns on the accessibility of the site from the town centre and the potential damage it could have on the existing cinema in the town. Meantime Tymonview in its application stated that because Kells and Trim have no cinemas, the potential catchment population of Navan and surrounding towns is 108,493. “The existing cinema in Navan has six screens and so this total represents only 5.5 screens per 100,000 people, a very low proportion by comparison with provision elsewhere in the country,” it added. However, board inspector Hugh D Morisson ruled that the development would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. The refusals for Navan are in stark contrast to Drogheda where plans for two multi-screen cinemas were approved in recent weeks.

Suspect Hunters Spotted In County By Louise Walsh

A MEATH group recently launched their debut album - after recording the GARDAI HAVE issued an alert after ‘hunters’ were noted acting suspiciously in two Meath areas recently. Gardai believe the men material in two different countries. VirtualTrio’s new release ‘Grief Proof were pretending to be hare hunting as they cased nearby properties and potential targets to burgle. Kells Group Gets Ambulance Gift By Louise Walsh

THE KELLS branch of the Order of Malta recently received a generous donation of an ambulance. The badly-needed vehicle was on show on Wednesday, December 5. The Order of Malta is hoping to raise awareness of the Kells branch and eager to welcome new volunteers to help with their work. They are also actively seeking new bigger premises around the town. The Order was set up in Kells three years ago but members believe their presence is not well-known in the area. Members regularly look after the elderly and organise regular black and white movie nights, bingo and dancing events. They also hold First Aid training courses for anyone interested. The information night will take place in the Kells People’s Resource Centre on Lord Edward Street at 8pm and all are welcome. Further details can be obtained from 086-4089989.

Locals Help Catch Robbers By Louise Walsh

HAVE-A-GO heroes helped catch two Post Office raiders in Clonalvy last Wednesday morning. Armed with knives, the robbers entered the premises around 10am and threatened staff before escaping with an undisclosed sum of money. However the duo dropped the bag of cash when they were confronted by vigilant residents who came to the aid of staff. The disgruntled thieves then embarked on a crime spree around the area and stole transport from a house to escape. Gardai were helped in their search by the Gardai helicopter and the robbers’ route was quickly reconstructed, again, with the help of

locals around the Clonalvy area. The criminals crashed the stolen car near the village church and fled over the fields where two suspects were eventually apprehended by gardai from Laytown and Ashbourne. Gardai would like to say a huge thank you to all in the Clonalvy community who helped in the capture of the criminals from the moment they entered the Post Office until the time of their arrest. Meantime, gardai are again asking the public to hide valuables in their car after an Australian tourist was robbed while visiting the Hill of Slane. Her handbag, driving licence and phone were taken when her car was broken into.

for Navan Town Centre worth €1,000. Manager Pat Mullaney and TV3’s Sybil Mulcahy had a tough job in selecting champagne in the new coffe shop which opened on Sunday. Along with a new childrens indoor activity play area, it makes for a family friendly environment.

NOEL MEADE, whose yard was recently rocked by the death of classy hurdler Go Native, had a little reason

to smile on Sunday when Busty Brown came out on top in the Monksfield Novice Hurdle at Navan. Ridden by Paul Carberry, the Sean Joseph Murphy-owned six-year-old upset the two market leaders after being produced expertly to take the lead at the last. He returned at 5-1 with Seefood second at 5-2 and 9-4 favourite Bonisland back in third.

Meade, who won the Monksfield with Pandorama in 2008 and again with Fully Funded two years ago, was left heartbroken following the death of Go Native, who was put down after breaking a leg while cantering. “It’s a game of ups and downs,” said Meade. “It can tear the heart out of you. That was an unbelievable thing that happened

the other day with Go Native.” Regarding Busty Brown, who is entered in the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle on December 16, Meade added: “This fellow’s improving. He just got touched off at Cork last time and would probably have won in another stride or two.

“I was worried whether he’d go in the ground today. The trip couldn’t be far enough for him - I’d say he’d stay

forever. He just keeps galloping and galloping. He’s settled down and because he’s relaxed he’s improved.” Meade

said he will consider the Grade 1 for his winner. Carberry added: “His jumping was super today. The pace quickened leaving the back straight but I was happy to let them go and I knew I had enough left to follow them. “He hit the front

just before the last, and was a little bit green when he got there, but battled on well and I never thought I would get beaten on the run-in. He’s a nice horse and I would say he’ll definitely have no problem jumping a fence.”

TOFINO BAY dug deep close home to fend off the strong challenge of Like Your Style to land this valuable

contest for trainer Dessie Hughes and jockey Davy Russell, who dropped his whip inside the final furlong. Tofino Bay moved to the front with one fence to jump, but he was forced to work hard by Like Your Style (9-1), who

found plenty for pressure under a never-say-die ride from multiple British champion Tony McCoy. But the line came too soon and Tofino Bay, advised at 10-1 by Pricewise in Sunday’s Racing Post, had enough in reserve under reigning Irish champion Russell to score at 8-1. Russell dropped his whip on the long slog for home and resorted

to encouraging his mount with his right hand. The jockey gave Tofino Bay at least five stern reminders, which ultimately made the crucial difference between victory and defeat.

(10-1) after the final fence (usual second-last fence) before he began to tread water. McCoy’s mount Like Your “He travelled so well through the race but I was keen not to hit the front too early,” said Russell. The Gordon

Elliott-trained Romanesco, sent off 9-2 favourite under Ruby Walsh, looked menacing with two fences to jump but weakened tamely up the home straight.. Glenquest kept on doggedly to take third ahead of Jadanli (25-1). According

the winning trainer, next year’s John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree is not on Tofino Bay’s agenda. Hughes said: “It’s his first season chasing and I think that would be too big of an ask. Perhaps next season we might look at it for him but not this one. We’ll try pick up another nice handicap somewhere with him now.”

The other Christmas present reliable is the mobile

Turnabout - Formally Known As A Mick McCarthy Memorial Trust Raise €20,115 for local St. Vincent de Paul Three Point Turn! By Lorne Devine - Lornas School Of Motoring Tel: 087 228 8060 E: devine.lorna@gmail.com www.lornasschoolofmotoring.com

The turnabout is what was formally known as the “three point turn”. It was renamed, as it is no longer a requirement, for the manoeuvre, to be completed in “three points”. The turnabout is one of the manoeuvres required on your practical driving test. It requires the “learner” to turn the car on the road, using the forward and reverse gears. This manoeuvre is useful for turning, when there are no side roads or gateways available. During your driving test, you will be directed to pull in to the left in a parked position. Give due way to other road users, at all times, and do not block an entrance or driveway. To begin the manoeuvre. Do not forget G.S.O.H! (Gear.Signal.Observation. Handbrake). Put the car in first gear, signal right to indicate your intention to move out. Begin your observation. Look over your left shoulder, left wing mirror and windscreen, then right wing mirror, finishing with your right shoulder. This enables a full 360 degree view of potential hazards. Release your handbrake. Slowly move forward in first gear steering briskly in a clockwise motion, towards the kerb, on the other side of the road, (your aim is to get the vehicle at a right angle across the road). As you pass the centre of the road give a quick look left and right. As you approach the kerb steer the opposite direction (anti-clockwise) in order to straighten the wheels. Declutch and use the footbrake to stop. Be careful not to hit the kerb. Apply the handbrake. (It is not a requirement but I would recommend it, especially if the road slopes). At this stage you introduce the rule G.S.O.H (Gear. Signal.Observation.Handbrake). Select reverse gear. There is no need to signal as the reverse light on your car is sufficient. Begin your observation. Release the handbrake. Reverse slowly while steering quickly (anti-clockwise) and again have a quick look left and right as you pass the centre

of the road. Look out the back window and glance left and right halfway between both kerbs, but remember you must look out your back window the vast majority of the time while you are reversing. The Examiner expects to see you looking primarily in the direction in which the car is moving. Again you may apply the handbrake, which is optional. Now you are stopped utilise the rule G.S.O.H (Gear. Signal.Observation.Handbrake). Slowly move forward in first gear steering briskly in a clockwise direction. Straighten up on the left hand side of the road. Follow the tester’s instructions. He may ask you to keep driving or to pull in on the left again. Try and do it in three points, but, it does not have to be completed in three. However, if it is safe do so, do it in three. If your vehicle overhangs the kerb at any point, ensure that there are no hazards e.g. trees or lamp posts that you could possibly collide with. Tips for the “perfect” turnabout • All around observation is essential throughout the maneuver. • If you see a hazard, stop and give way. If an on coming vehicle stops for you, mid way through your turn, DO NOT panic, just continue on! • Multitask. Each time you stop, look around at the same time as putting the car in gear and signaling. The turnabout should be done promptly and efficiently. • You must be comfortable moving the car forward and back at a very slow speed, using clutch control. It’s quite likely you may not have to lift the clutch fully at all on your turnabout. Remember there is no such motion as “Coasting” when in First gear or Reverse gear.

Happy and safe motoring to all! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

THE BOGEY BOYS TO PLAY TWO MORE NAVAN GIGS BEGGY’S 19th & 20th DECEMBER 2012 BAND HAD U2 AS THEIR SUPPORT IN 1980! The Bogey Boys are back in town after three awesome gigs in the Navan area this summer. Swan Lane in the Ardboyne was the setting for an epic night on 4th May when the band attracted a huge crowd to their first gig home since they played Claremont Stadium in 1982! Two more memorable gigs followed at Tara na Rí on 26th May and Rock D’ Lough,Gormalough, on 27th August. Lead guitarist, Jimmy Smyth, is widely regarded as the best in Ireland and once turned down the opportunity to join Thin Lizzy! Jimmy was Musical Director for Van Morrison in 2002 and plays guitar on Gilbert O’Sullivan’s British tours. He has also performed at the Grammy Awards in 1988 and 1996.Jimmy’s brother,Tony, is an awesome drummer and also plays with local bands Deep Six and The McGarry Brothers, while bass player Doish Nagle is renowned for playing and touring alongside Phil Lynott, in Lynott’s solo tours and also with Grand Slam, the band that replaced Thin Lizzy in 1984 . Beggy’s is the place to be on the 19th and 20th December for The Bogey Boys with support from the amazing Donal Kirk and introducing a brand new talent in Ruby Smyth. Tickets on sale from Beggy’s €10.

DONAL KIRK

(EX-THE BUSINESS & BRIAN DOWNEY’S THE SWAMP)

Donal Kirk

RUBY SMYTH

“IS A STAR IN THE MAKING” - Shay Healy

Donal Kirk is one of the most repected musicians on the Dublin rock scene with his own band,The Donal

Kirk Band featuring Jimmy Smyth, Paul Byrne and the drummer from The Corrs, Jason Duffy.

Omeath born Donal, first came to prominence as an

outstanding lead vocalist with top Dublin blues band,

The Business in 1990. The Waterboys’ Mike Scott

often shows up at Donal’s gigs in Dublin and frquently joins him on stage . The Business at one stage featured

ex-Thin Lizzy drummer, Brian Downey, who went on to form The Swamp with Pat Courtney , John Costello and Donal in the early 90s.

Donal is really looking forward to doing his own

acoustic set on both nights in Beggy’s.

Ruby Smyth who will support The Bogey Boys in Beggy’s Bar in Navan on 19th & 20th December

Ruby Smyth will no doubt feel at home when she plays her first gig in Navan as she opens for her dad (Jimmy Smyth) and his legendary band The Bogey Boys. Ruby spent many of her earlier years visiting her many relations in Navan and is “thrilled” to be playing her first gig in the town. Ruby has made a big impression already in her two gigs recently, opening for Frances Black at The Mermaid Theatre in Bray and at Shay Healy’s comeback gig in The Sugar Club in Dublin. Her own composition “ Red Velvet” is an impressive debut and can be found on You Tube. Ruby attends Malahide Community School and is still only 16! Her first public performance came only last year when she was chosen for the lead role in the school’s musical “Zombie Prom”. Both of her parents have obviously had a huge influence on Ruby’s interest in music with her mother, Jenny Newman, lead vocalist with Toy with Rhythm in the 80s and a backing vocalist for stars such as Elton John and of course her dad, Jimmy, renowned as the lead guitarist with the Bogey Boys, Gilbert O Sullivan and Musical Director for no less a man than Van Morrison!

JAMROCKS IN BEGGY’S A HUGE SUCCESS Jamrocks at Beggy’s on Thursday nights has proven to be a massive success since the intiative was begun by local musican Declan Smyth (The Furry Gilberts) and barowner Stephen Beggy back in Sept 2011. More than 100 bands from as far away as Letterkenny , Mullingar, Dublin,Wexford , Waterford and Warrenpoint, have joined many new Meath bands to play Jamrocks on Thursdays throughout the year . Declan explains “One of the main reasons for its popularity is that the venue provides all the equipment needed for a band to play- full guitar and bass amps, sound system, sound engineer and drum kit, so any band or musicians are welcome to take part. Stephen Beggy adds “Jamrocks has proven to be an outstanding success. We’ve also hosted well known bands like Sircles(ex-The Blizzards) and The Ourz from Balbriggan but it’s really a stepping stone for many local bands with the quality overall being really top class ”.Plans are in place for a Band Competition to begin in mid-January with prizes of €1000 worth of recording time,€500 cash and €500 voucher for musical equipment. Entry fee is €50 and only for bands playing original material.

‘Keep It Kells’ This Christmas! Kells & District Chamber of Commerce is reminding people to Keep It Kells this festive season and to shop locally and support local businesses – and help retain jobs. To help raise awareness of the

campaign, Kells Chamber has invited the local schools to join in promoting and growing the Keep It Kells campaign this Christmas period.

Our Keep It Kells campaign runs throughout the year and we have an active FaceBook page where

we promote local events, charities, sporting groups and businesses and generally encourage people to shop, eat out, do business and support our community in every way.

“In these difficult economic times a strong and vibrant local economy is most important; many

parents depend on this for their jobs and income, as will many of the students when they leave school,” says Chamber President John V. Farrelly.

Kells Chamber is providing two wonderful prizes to help encourage students to support our campaign! A Draw for €100 in Kells Shopping Vouchers for one lucky student and win a party for a class in The Courtyard in The Headfort Arms Hotel.

To enter the €100 draw, students will need to keep shopping receipts from either their or their

parents’ shopping in Kells and the surrounding district. They need to clearly write their name, school and class number on the back. Each participating class can collect the receipts in a box and then Kells

Chamber will collect all the boxes on the final day of school and then pick out a name. The winner will receive €100 in Kells Shopping Vouchers, which can be spent in most outlets in Kells.

To be in with a chance to win the party for their class in The Courtyard in The Headfort Arms Hotel

– with finger food and soft drinks for up to 30 students – we are leaving this up to each school and class, but here are a few creative ideas:

• Design a Keep It Kells poster

• Write an press release for a local paper

• Film or record an audio advertisement on the importance of shopping locally • Have a photographic competition showcasing the best of shopping in Kells • Or come up with a unique idea yourselves on how to Keep It Kells!

Submit your entries by the last day of school before Christmas and one lucky student and their class could be enjoying a post-Christmas party in January!

Kells Chamber of Commerce is also asking local employers and consumers to consider buy-

ing Kells Shopping Vouchers this year. To date, we have sold over €100,000 of these vouchers – all of which has been money that has been kept in Kells. For employers: some of the reasons why you might consider giving the Kells Shopping Vouchers to your staff include:

• Current tax laws allow employers give up to €250 as a non-cash, tax-free bonus to staff each

year, which makes a gift of a voucher of more real monetary value than a cash bonus that will be taxed.

• Recipients have a wide choice where to spend the Vouchers – Kells Chamber has opened the scheme up to all retailers in the Kells District

• Vouchers have a 2 year validity period

• You will be helping Kells business people in keeping trade local

• Some staff just come to the Kells area for their jobs; encouraging them to shop here will foster a greater affinity with the town and by extension greater job satisfaction

• Environmental benefits of encouraging staff to ‘Shop Local’ rather than driving to larger towns and shopping centres

• Ease of use for employers (you can fax or email your order form to Kells Chamber)

• Special Offers may be available throughout the year to bearers of Vouchers; the Chamber will notify employers who have purchased Vouchers for their staff of any offers or discounts

Kells Shopping Vouchers are available from the following outlets:

• Kells Chamber of Commerce • O’Brien’s Supervalu • Kells Credit Union

• Centra Bective Square

are a great way to meet people and learn about different businesses in the town and district. Next up,

it’s the turn of Jack’s Porterhouse Restaurant & Bar on the Athboy Road. The evening kicks off at 8pm on Thursday December 6th and visitors will have the chance to sample food and hear about the

venue’s exciting Christmas music and event line-up. There will also be a traditional Irish music session. Admission is free.

Kells & District Chamber also helped faciliate the collection of money towards funding this year’s

Christmas lights, as well as organising an electrical contractor to put them up. This year’s turning on of

the lights and Santa’s Visit To Town will take place on the afternoon of Saturday December 8th on Farrell Street. Our sincere thanks to all of the local businesses and people who contributed generously to our mass and other collections towards the Christmas lights this year. Your support is much appreciated. Peugeot 208 Is Leader Of The Pack The new and economical Peugeot 208 takes pride of place as segment leader for low CO2 emissions, ahead of

its many rivals. The only model in the small car B1 segment out of a total of 29 models to deliver both petrol and diesel models at sub-100g of CO2, the new 208 offers up to 3.8 litres / 100km (74MPG) and emissions as low as 87g/CO2.

Des Cannon, Peugeot Sales & Marketing Director said, “With Budget 2013 approaching, it is widely expected

that motorists will pay more VRT and annual road tax in the New Year when purchasing their new car. The new Peugeot 208 is the only model in the B segment that delivers both petrol and diesel models at the new sub-100g CO2 benchmark. With VRT and road tax linked to CO2 emissions, the new 208 is uniquely placed to incur minimal increases in Budget 2013.”

The new 208, destined to become a star-seller for Peugeot like its predecessor 206 and 207 models, is now

available to order at Peugeot dealerships nationwide. Retailing from €14,495 plus delivery related charges, standard equipment across the range for Ireland includes a full size spare wheel, ESP and cruise control + speed limiter.

Sales of new 208 in Europe have reached a strong 137,600 units since it was launched in April. The 208 hatchback

range will be followed by a GTi version next spring and a compact crossover model, the 2008, by summer 2013.
