Genetec recognised as fastest growing access control software provider in the world according to new Omdia Report

Company credits growth to market demand for open and unified security solutions According to the latest report from research organisation Omdia, Genetec Inc. (“Genetec”), a leading technology provider of unified security, public safety, operations, and business intelligence solutions, has been recognised as the fastest-growing access control software provider in the world for the second year in a row. The report shows Genetec taking market share from other access control vendors and strengthening its number two position globally (up from 4th in 2019). Regionally, Genetec experienced the most organic growth in the Americas and was the fastest-growing software provider in EMEA.

Traditionally dominated by proprietary solutions with slow innovation cycles, the access control industry provided few options for IT and cyber-security conscious customers. Modern enterprises of all sizes are now looking to migrate to unified, open-architecture, and secure access control solutions that allow them to choose hardware that best suits their needs. This has, in large part, fueled the rapid market share gains of Genetec.

“While traditional, proprietary access control vendors were hard hit the last couple of years, Genetec grew by almost 20% globally, gaining ground in both the Americas region and in EMEA,” said Bryan Montany, Physical Security Analyst at Omdia.

Genetec credits its growth to the continual innovation of its unified security platform, Security Center, where access control functions go beyond locking and unlocking doors and address non-traditional applications such as enclosure management. Genetec unified solutions are designed to reveal new insights that help organisations better understand their business and operations and provide customers with a measurable return on their investment.

“At a time when many traditional access control vendors are trying to maintain market share through mergers and acquisitions, Genetec is growing its access control business organically by focusing on innovative, nonproprietary, and cybersecure solutions that meet the needs of forward-thinking organisations, while laying the foundation for their future growth,” said Guy Chenard, Chief Commercial Officer, Genetec Inc.

With its open approach, Genetec provides a large and growing selection of third-party access control devices. This allows organisations to choose the hardware that addresses their security needs and objectives, while avoiding the long-term setbacks of closed solutions. The open approach offered by Genetec solutions enables end users to scale up or down, broaden the capabilities of their solution, and migrate to the cloud at their own pace. With unified solutions, which bring together access control, video surveillance, and license plate recognition, physical security is evolving from a tool for mitigating risk to playing a significant role in organisations’ digital transformation.

According to another recently published Omdia report, Genetec ranked #1 in video surveillance software globally for the 11th consecutive year, and recorded the fastest market share gain over the last three years. These figures coupled with the company’s global growth in access control software, further underscore its market leadership and the benefits of a unified platform.

Sports fans protected from threat of vehicleborne attacks thanks to record HVM barrier installation

Visitors to the Commonwealth Games were protected from the threat of vehicle-borne attacks thanks to months of meticulous planning and the largest ever deployment of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) barriers in the UK.

Some 18 months prior to the major event, held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8, the National Vehicle Threat Mitigation Unit (NVTMU) started its preparations to help protect everyone attending the games.

This involved providing advice to local and regional authorities, transport partners, police and the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games on preventing vehicle as a weapon attacks.

As the appointed supplier of the Government’s National Barrier Asset (NBA), the process was supported by Hardstaff Barriers. Its team of specialists delivered the barriers to 18 sites, which included athletes’ villages, transport malls and sporting venues.

In order to keep the many sites across the West Midlands as safe as possible, the following items were installed: • 56 gates • 387 barges • 160 Wailing Units • 2000 Quick Moveable Blocks • 12 kilometres of security fencing were deployed, with support from ZSD Contractors Ltd • 5 kilometres of high security fencing, with support from ZSD Contractors Ltd • 2 kilometres of temporary vehicle restraint system (TVRS), with support from Asset VRS • 475 modular HVM units

In its recent article about the security of the Commonwealth Games, the National Counter Terrorism Security Office stated: ‘The deployment of the NBA, to support partners in delivering the Commonwealth Games, has seen the largest ever deployment of the asset in the 19 years that it has been deployed across various sites around the UK.

‘This entire process spanned a total of 76 days. The size of the task cannot be underestimated. Meeting deadlines, cost effectiveness and the sheer number of resources required (staff and assets) made this a challenging deployment.’

With reference to Hardstaff Barriers’ role, the article went on: ‘This was completed in partnership with the NBA Contractor who completed this tremendous task, thus helping to ensure the safety and security of those attending the Commonwealth Games.’

Back to basics - Keeping a container secure

Containers are some of the most effective storage solutions available to businesses and there’s a host of reasons why they are the most popular. However, there’s a whole number of ways to keep containers secure.

Although containers are generally designed to be secure, weatherproof and durable, there’s always a risk of vandalism, theft and damage to contend with.

Here’s a few tips from Tom Richardson from at Locks Direct to ensure you are doubly protected against any issues:

Effective locks

Let’s start with the basics and the traditional method for keeping containers secure. Locking a container is never enough, but a combination of a few different physical pieces of protection can be the best barrier.

For example, cross bar locks are a great way to combat theft. A fully secure bar that prevents your door from being opened from the outside, this is a great way to place another hurdle in the way of would-be thieves. Even if a padlock is broken, your container will still be inaccessible.

Padlocks, especially smart ones, are a traditional way of locking up containers securely and with good reason. Durable, tough and reliable, they are incredibly secure. Pair with a lock box that can be placed around the lock and you have a conundrum for any thief. Using an insurance-grade padlock such as a Squire WS75 will also mean the strength of your other security options is matched.

You could even have suited, or master keyed padlocks that could open a whole group of containers, meaning keys can easily be kept track of and tracked.

Simply alarming

To double up your security, installing an alarm should be paramount. Not only can you tell if a criminal has broken in or attempted to open your container, sometimes without them knowing, but you can also deter criminals if you have a particularly visible setup. Having a box positioned in such a way that it makes it very clear security measures are in place. You can also use remote systems that can be monitored elsewhere.

Super Surveillance

The technology available for surveillance these days is incredible and offers a huge amount of security as well as peace of mind for those that use it. Sophisticated and customisable to a high level, it has also reached a level where it is both affordable and realistic for even the smallest operation.

A good surveillance system can often act as a deterrent but can also be of immense help when trying to recover from the effects of crime. It can aid police and other authorities and can remove the burden that comes with evidence gathering for insurance purposes.

Fence it in

If you’ve had trouble with break-ins before, another ring of security can’t hurt. If local laws permit it, why not add in another level of protection with some security fencing? You can go for a simple chain link option or something more sturdy like stainless steel with additional features like anti-vandal spikes or toppers to discourage would-be intruders.

Coventry firm secures town famed for two of Scandinavia’s biggest tourist hotspots

A Danish town famed for two of Scandinavia’s biggest tourist attractions has seen its counter terrorism defences boosted by a market leader based in Coventry

Hundreds of bollards within Safetyflex Barriers’ innovative Truckstopper range have been installed along a key transport corridor in Billund in Denmark.

The route serves Denmark’s second-largest airport Billund Airport, Scandinavia’s biggest waterpark Lalandia, and Legoland – which is the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside Copenhagen.

Marcus Gerrard, director at Safetyflex, said: “It is pleasing to complete another export order – particularly in Scandinavia, which is a market we have excelled in in recent years.

“This particular site draws in millions of visitors every year due to its proximity to high-profile tourist attractions and a busy airport.

“We are delighted to have supplied a mixture of fixed and removable anti-terrorist bollards to help keep tourists safe on pedestrian routes and close to bus stops. “Our Truckstopper range has been crash tested to stop vehicles travelling up to 50mph and is a real success story for us, operating around airports, sports stadiums, and busy city centres.

“This particular Truckstopper Bollard, which uses military grade steel, was great solution, as it has a very shallow foundation, and has a patented design, that gives the bollard a nice slim line feature, to blend in to existing architecture.”

Safetyflex is based in Coventry, but operates on a global scale with 36 patents worldwide.

The company’s technology and cutting-edge designs have resulted in major contracts overseas including Europe, the US, Scandinavia and Australia, with exports now accounting for 40 per cent of business.

In an emergency, could you lock down access to your entire premises quickly and safely?

Situations can arise when a facility manager needs to lock down their premises remotely. With mechanical security this is, of course, impossible. Likewise, many existing wireless electronic access control systems do not have the ability to lock down efficiently — or even at all.

SMARTair Wireless Online access control helps facility managers sleep better at night: Not only can they lock down from anywhere; they can do so intelligently — opening, closing or maintaining access to individual doors or zones to deal with the emergency.

With a single, global command, doors equipped with SMARTair devices may be set to Block Mode: They only unlock with a specific credential. Aside from designated staff, no one on-site gets to move around freely.

Alternatively, Emergency Close can lock all openings remotely and simultaneously. An authorized credential may still unlock them.

As a third option, every device can be set to Emergency Open, which unlocks them all. This could provide fire services with instant access to a whole building or site, for example.

Fine-grained Lockdown controls

SMARTair gives facility managers different ways to lock down. Global Lockdown may be initiated from SMARTair’s software interface or Web Manager. It can also be activated via an emergency push-button connected to a SMARTair HUB.

In addition, Lockdown does not need to be an all-ornothing choice. SMARTair enables fine-grained control down to the level of an individual door, if required.

A facility manager can pre-define over 250 different lockdown zones. In any emergency, they choose whether to lock down a whole zone or just specific doors. This level of control could protect people and valuable assets — or in extreme situations, even save lives.

With the control provided by SMARTair’s Global Lockdown feature, managers can be confident building users have the highest level of protection against the unexpected.

The SMARTair® advantage

With intuitive management software and batterypowered locks for almost any application, a SMARTair system is easy to install and convenient to use. It can handle a large number of users and offers a choice of credentials, including standard RFID cards, tags and fobs along with Mobile Keys via the SMARTair Openow™ app.

The system is more cost-efficient to run than wired access control, which needs mains electricity, or traditional mechanical security, where locks must be managed manually and individually.

Doors require minimal alterations when SMARTair devices are fitted because no cabling is required.

With the broad range of SMARTair devices — escutcheons, cylinders, locks and a wall reader — plus flexible control from the SMARTair software, facility managers run their site efficiently and safely, even in an emergency.

‘The future, today!’ - Videosoft partners with Cradlepoint to optimize video streaming over 5G and LTE networks

Videosoft Global, a leader in bandwidth-efficient video streaming, has announced a partnership with Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered 5G and LTE wireless network edge solutions

Videosoft’s Firelight Gateway software running on Cradlepoint routers dramatically reduces the cost of live streaming over 5G and LTE networks. It is what security sector video expert Stewart McCone calls a ‘gamechanger’ for the industry.

Videosoft Global Firelight software is validated with Cradlepoint routers and can now offer ultra-low bandwidth streaming without the need for additional hardware.

Videosoft Firelight dramatically reduces the cost of live streaming using Cradlepoint routers on 4G and 5G networks. Due to its ability to stream in areas of low bandwidth, many applications, once deemed impossible or too expensive, are now open to Cradlepoint users. To access the benefits of Videosoft’s ultra-low bitrate software, Cradlepoint customers with R1700, R1900 or E3000 series routers can simply activate a Videosoft license.*

Over the last year, a team from Videosoft has worked closely and collaboratively alongside Cradlepoint technicians to bring the product to market.

“Combining the power of a Cradlepoint router and Videosoft’s FireLight solution, reliable, on-the-move live video streaming is now a reality,” said Stewart McCone, Chief Executive Officer of Videosoft Global.

“We instantly recognized that the introduction of our software on Cradlepoint’s routers was a barometer of change, bringing about a shift in the marketplace and a real game changer; something that I’d envisaged when I began working in the industry two decades ago.

“Previously, additional hardware was always needed to do video streaming. Now, by combining our software with existing comms hardware, Videosoft has opened up new Internet of Things (IoT) and video applications to many more users; the future is here today.”

Cellular networks do not always provide consistent bandwidth availability, resulting in dropped live video feeds, especially from moving vehicles. However, Videosoft’s FireLight technology continuously monitors the network’s health, and, as the bandwidth flexes, it automatically adjusts the amount required (up or down) to maintain a live stream at the optimal quality and low latency.

For McCone, this development proves that Videosoft provides solutions to industry problems other manufacturers can only dream of and which have not been available - until now.

The Cradlepoint/Videosoft Global partnership demonstrates a commitment to meet customer demands by delivering specialist Future Tech in hardware and software applications. It is also the latest confirmation of Videosoft Global’s position as the number one player in providing live video over low bandwidth networks, following a string of other international successes in the security, Satcom, 5G, and IoT sectors.

ONVIF standard and built-in visitor management among enhancements for Inner Range’s Integriti

Access control manufacturer Inner Range has announced a number of enhancements to its flagship product Integriti, including meeting ONVIF standards and providing built-in visitor management capabilities.

Integriti is Inner Range’s enterprise-level intelligent access and security system, and the company’s R&D team is constantly working on improvements to improve safety and ease of access for customers.

This month (July), a new update is available for new and existing customers, which includes making Integriti an ONVIF product. This means operators can connect ONVIF standard IP CCTV cameras directly to Integriti, without the need for a network recorder or video management system for basic tasks, such as live video streaming, event monitoring and exporting current frames.

Integriti can also now integrate with MOBOTIX HUB cameras, and an existing interface with Milestone has more advanced options for operators.

Another development allows basic visitor management to be carried out directly within Integriti via a dedicated interface. Default properties and permissions can be set up for different types of visitor, making it easier for users to create suitable credentials, and manage current visitors on site. This is available for Integriti customers with ‘business’ or ‘corporate’ software options.

Other enhancements include being able to create QR code credentials for visitors directly within Integriti, without the need for a visitor management system, as well as new integrations with STid Bluetooth door readers, and Dormakaba wireless locks.

Tim Northwood, director of Inner Range, said: “As a manufacturer, our R&D team is constantly exploring new ways to make our systems easier and more efficient for operators to use, provide a slick and hasslefree experience for workers, residents and visitors, all while maintaining high levels of security.

“These latest enhancements will give all customers more choice in how they manage access and security, as well as offering some cost and resource savings where additional third-party systems are no longer required.”

The UK team at Inner Range will be showcasing Integriti’s latest enhancements and vast integration capabilities, as well as its entry-level system, Inception, at the International Security Expo, in London in September.

Inner Range systems have been installed in over 30 countries, offering trouble-free access and smart building management for local sites as well as national and global estates. Customers include hospitals and high-security units, colleges, distribution centres and pharmaceutical companies. government and critical national infrastructure.
