Welcome to our second edition of The Mecca Report. We so love pulling this together, as it gives us a chance to call on Mecca’s stable of buyers, makeup artists, skin savants and trend scouts, as well as tapping into some of the best brains and brightest names in fragrance, makeup and skincare from around the globe for their insights. I’m always completely fascinated by what everyone comes back with. In this edition, we’ve embraced our role as the beauty curator and tracked the hair and makeup trends to trial, flagged game-changing skincare that can truly ‘skinfluence’ your complexion, and stuck our noses into the signature scents of local and global style-setters. We’ve elbowed our way into the address books of some of the most stylesavvy brand founders for their must-visit addresses in our favourite cities in Europe, the United States, and Asia. We report on beauty’s latest commodity – sleep – and how to get more of it (which also happens to be my personal holy grail) and we’ve crafted a cheat sheet for mastering life's little queries courtesy of a handful of experts.

JO HORGAN, MECCA FOUNDER

We hope you enjoy this edition of The Mecca Report. Best wishes,

From brazen lips to laid-back waves, Mecca brings you the best in beauty from AW15 Couture…

HOT LIP S

Ostentatious shades of fuchsia ruled at couture. Makeup maestro Linda Cantello painted pouts with a bold finish at Armani Privé, letting the lips be the focus against an eventoned complexion. A bold move for the autumn couture season, it’s the perfect hue for our Southern Hemisphere warm up. Go bold with a creamy, pigmented formula or opt for a dialled-down tint.

Chic, fantastical beauty headlined at Chanel this season. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux created this overthe-top maquillage with extreme contouring, defined, exaggerated arches, and bold, red lips, creating a hyper-feminine look. While the haute couture concept may not translate into your day-to-day routine, elements of the look are worth a trial. An arsenal of the right brow products can turn sparse arches into this Karl Lagerfeld-approved statement. And remember, a classic red lip. MECCA PRO TIP: Keep your lashes bare so as not to overwork this striking look.

“I woke up like this” hair has been a runway mainstay for a few seasons now, as “done”, structured styles have fallen out of favour. At Dior and Versace, ornate gowns were paired with gentle, imperfect waves, casting a cool, casualness to a haute affair. Backstage hair was prepped with a sea salt spray to encourage texture and movement. For more definition, try a curling rod, alternating the direction each time you wrap hair around. MECCA PRO TIP: For a laissezfaire finish, skip the crunchy hairspray. This texture enhancing crème from Bumble and bumble does all the work for you.

PR EC I O US M ETA L S Couture is synonymous with opulence, so it’s fitting that precious metal shades were de rigueur. Lids were awash in platinum hues at Fendi while gold highlighting added a touch of glitz to Elie Saab’s black lined cat’s eye. But the most ethereal take on metallic was the moss green hue that makeup royalty Pat McGrath blended above and below the lash line to create a soft, romantic take at Versace. MECCA PRO TIP: No matter the shade, each look was paired with a nude lip proving that metallic eyes shine brightest on their own.

THE BOTANICAL ELIXIR

THE CULT CLASSIC

THE LIFT-ER

A favourite amongst New York’s fashion set who swear by its gentle, restorative powers, this luxe elixir is packed with powerful rose botanicals that give the skin an instant hit of radiance. Long-term use has serious visible anti-ageing benefits. The star ingredient, Rose de Mai, packs a potent dose of antioxidant Vitamin C, creating a bright, even looking skintone, while rosehip oil targets collagen to visibly smooth and firm.

This iconic luxury cream, which was first formulated for wound healing by an aerospace scientist, has become a staple of Hollywood’s discerning A-listers. The patented, nutrient-rich sea kelp Miracle Broth improves the appearance of fine lines while shrinking the look of pores and firming the skin’s texture. Each ceramic pot is hand-filled, maintaining the scientist’s original standards from start to finish.

Needles No More is a breakthrough formulation that softens the look of fine lines, mimicking the effects of an injectable anti-wrinkle treatment. After application, there’s an instant tightening effect, which relaxes the look of wrinkles across the forehead, around the eyes and that pesky “11” in between the brows (taking off years in just minutes).

THE SMOOTH OPERATOR

THE RENEWAL MAESTRO

THE GLOW GETTER

With a chic clinic on Los Angeles’ famed Melrose Place, an eponymous range and a roster of celeb clients, Kate Somerville is one of America’s most trusted skincare authorities. And while the wait-list for an appointment with her may be months, the radiant results of her signature facial is a bit easier to obtain thanks to hero product, Exfolikate. This intense skin polisher uses fruit and lactic acids to gently dissolve away dead skin cells while aloe vera and Vitamin E soothe and soften for an A-list glow.

Sunday Riley is the skincare brand beloved by discerning designers and models alike. The latest product in their stable of botanical-based wonders features the most effective clinically proven anti-ager: retinol. It restores the look of skin’s tone, elasticity and texture. The revolutionary oil formula works with every skin type, with nourishing cold-pressed avocado, chia and grape seed oils to hydrate and soothe, quelling redness and irritation. Apply at night and wake up with clearer, smoother skin.

Founded by the daughters of a top plastic surgeon, Radical’s products live up to their life-changing name. These pads mimic the benefits of a professional peel, bestowing an immediate glow with a powerful concentrate of alpha and beta hydroxy acids. Dull skin cells are gently removed, revealing a brighter complexion. Skin becomes firmer and pores less visible long term, plus it boosts the efficiency of your other products.

Super-derm Dr Perricone combined years of research and expertise to create this powerful anti-ageing essential. Formulated to correct ten visible signs of ageing, this breakthrough cream combats the look of skin texture, redness, dryness, wrinkles, elasticity and more, targeting your specific concerns for a truly bespoke treatment at the cellular level. The result is a healthy, younger-looking, derm-approved complexion.

Tending to some of Manhattan’s most famous faces, Dr Dennis Gross has pioneered the importance of results-driven skincare. This self-heating mask is packed with essential vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients, plus active Vitamin D, to immediately rejuvenate dry, dull skin while a unique warming sensation increases circulation to boost radiance and promote a plump, youthful bounce to the skin.

while you were SLEEPING A decent night’s sleep may be one of the greatest anti-ageing weapons around. And yet, in today’s multiple-platform Instagram-ing, Tweet-ing, YouTube-ing society it’s pretty hard to just “switch off”. Mecca brings you the ultimate crib sheet to optimise those precious hours of sleep and reap the real benefits for your body.

According to the Sleep Health Foundation, up to 35 per cent of Australians suffer from sleep problems, and clocking in only a few hours has detrimental effects. Getting the recommended eight hours each night can improve concentration, sharpen memory and maintain the fat-burning systems which regulate our weight. It’s also the only time our brain gets to catch up from the day: processing data, checking the body’s balance of hormones, enzymes and proteins, plus sweeping out toxic detritus that causes major memory problems with build-up. It’s time to stop thinking of sleep as a luxury but rather a non-negotiable.

great benefits. “Cultivating a state of ‘calm’ is the most widely researched, validated and tangible benefit that practitioners experience,” says Downing. “Mindfulness and meditation help reduce the stress response which leads to longer, deeper sleep.” In fact, a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that individuals who participated in a mindfulness awareness program experienced less insomnia, fatigue, and depression than their counterparts who instead took a sleep education class. Curious? Download a meditation app (Liv recommends Smiling Mind, Headspace or Buddify) or try her quick guide on page 8.

Taking a warm bath, lighting a candle or reading your favourite book each night can act as signals to your body that it’s time to unwind. Coupling your warm bath with relaxing music or calming scents such as Lavender and Chamomile are good sleepinducing options. And remember to put away mobile phones, laptops and tablets at least half an hour before bed, as these activities stimulate the brain instead of helping you to relax.

If your brain is buzzing with stray thoughts and to-do lists for the next day, write them down. Go for old fashioned pen and paper to avoid the 'blue-light' from One way to improve sleep quality is through Another way to prepare yourself for a good night’s your devices, as this tells the brain to stop secreting meditation. Psychologist and meditation teacher Liv sleep is by establishing a regular “sleep ritual” melatonin (a hormone that helps you to wind down) Downing, co-founder of Melbourne’s Happy Melon, that your body associates with sleep – our bodies and signals it to stay awake. Set the scene by lighting a candle (try Diptyque Vanille 6.5oz $89, which blends the note with creamy sandalwood) and infusing the water with Ren Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil 110ml $72 featuring a therapeutic, stress-relieving rose scent. Cleanse with This Works Deep Sleep Shower Gel 250ml $36 which is formulated with an aromatherapy blend to further calm the senses. And once out of the bath, lock in moisture with Mecca Cosmetica Elixir Body Oil 120ml $116, an ultranourishing blend of rosehip, jojoba, avocado and nut oils. But don’t linger too long, once out, you’ll become groggy as your core body temperature drops, accelerating the natural

To ensure shut eye comes quickly, prep linens with This Works Deep Sleep Spray 75ml $38. The heavenly scent (which combines calming essential oils of lavender, vetivert and wild camomile) is clinically proven to be efficacious – 89 per cent of users fell asleep faster than normal. But if waking up throughout the night is more your problem, try the new variety, This Works Deep Sleep Plus Spray 75ml $60, which is formulated with the same all-natural scent in a time-released system (natural sleep movement releases the fragrance), ensuring the potency remains high all through the night. Sweet dreams, indeed. ABOVE: Happy Melon’s meditation space at their Armadale studio.

Set the timer on your phone for 5-10 minutes. Sit comfortably (cross-legged on a cushion on the floor is fine but a good old fashioned chair is good too), allowing the back to become straight. Close the eyes and start focusing your attention on the breath, visualise your body becoming relaxed as you exhale. When the mind wanders away from the breath (which it ALWAYS does), you simply (or maybe not so simply) come back to the breath and you just repeat this over and over. Don't worry if you don't get it straight away. It's a gradual process and like most things, meditation takes practice.

1. Prep skin. “The only way to ensure a flawless, long-lasting tan is by perfectly preparing the skin,” says Read. “You’ll need to start at least 24 hours before by shaving or waxing any unwanted hair. I recommend exfoliating with my Tan Perfecting Enzyme Peel Mask, then moisturise dry areas such as elbows, knees, feet and hands.” 2. Apply the tan in layers using a mitt. “Layering also creates the most natural effect,” says Read. “I apply one layer, then wait 30 minutes before applying a second. This will ensure you haven’t missed any areas.” And for hard to reach areas, just get creative. “To tan your back, place a tanning mitt onto a wooden spoon, then secure with an elastic band.” 3 . Erase any mistakes. “Follow my top secret tan-removing recipe. Mix a teaspoon of lime juice, a teaspoon of lemon juice and two tablespoons of milk. Saturate a face cloth, and warm up in the microwave for one minute. Leave it to cool for 10 seconds, and then rub all over your skin – voilà! Your tan will be removed.”

The Business of Beauty

MECCA’S PRICE PROMISE You like to shop. We like to shop. You travel. We travel. You want the

best value on your favourite beauty brands and the convenience of buying them locally when you want them. We want that too. Which is why we’re committed to bringing you our exclusive brands at prices as close to the international market as possible. Fluctuations in the New Zealand dollar mean our prices will change from time to time. Any change will remain in line with our Price Promise and our commitment to bring you the best value we can. If you would like any further information on the Mecca Price Promise please visit http://www. meccacosmetica.co.nz/meccacosmeticanz-price-promise-v1.pdf or email us at customerservice@mecca.com.au

All prices in this book are in New Zealand dollars. If you do not wish to receive Mecca Cosmetica catalogues in future please email us at customerservice@mecca.com.au. Obviously real life and catalogue life are two different things, so some products may be larger than life, or brighter than bright. If you want the ‘real deal’, go in store and rub, dub, try and apply to your heart’s content. We also take the utmost care to ensure the accuracy of information on pricing but sometimes life’s little mishaps can occur. We are human after all and appreciate your understanding.

*The Mecca Price Promise doesn’t apply to Balenciaga, Bobbi Brown, Chloe, CK, Clarins, Clarisonic, Clinique, Egyptian Magic, GHD, La Mer, Lancôme, Marc Jacobs, Philosophy, Urban Decay and YSL, as we follow the RRP set by these brands for the New Zealand market. ^When reviewing prices, Mecca converts the U.S. RRP to $NZD using the exchange rate averaged over the relevant 3-month period. Prices are then adjusted 2 months later in stores and online. As the New Zealand dollar fluctuates, the daily exchange rate following our review may differ from the rates we used for the pricing review. The pricing of our brands is reviewed every 6 to 9 months. If the exchange rate fluctuates by more than 10% in a 3 month period, Mecca may review prices more frequently. **Mecca includes an amount of 5% of the $NZD retail price to cover costs such as shipping and handling and 15% for the mandatory New Zealand GST. To keep things simple, we round this final amount to the nearest dollar.
